The Gorge Underground Kayak and SUP tours are fine for beginners. There is no wind, waves, or current in the mine, so it is a gentle, easy paddle. It is very dark, but everyone will have a helmet with a headlamp, and the guides will have a spotlight to highlight different features of the mine. There will be a quick intro to paddling given for each craft before departure.

It’s 50 degrees underground, so dress in light athletic quick drying layers (you may get a bit damp depending on your paddling skill), extra pair of socks (no shoes allowed in clear kayaks), gloves (great idea) and comfortable shoes. Kids tends to get colder, so dress them warmly. We rent neoprene socks and mitts on the deluxe tours for $2.00 if needed.

We try our best to keep you dry, but there are times when you may get a little wet. There may be a little bit of water in the bottom of your kayak, and sometimes the seats are a bit wet. Some people also get wet from the water dripping off their paddles, but if you hold your paddle low this should not be a problem. There are also a few places in the mine where the water drips from the ceiling, but your guides will direct you around these places.

The mine stays a constant temperature of about 52 degrees year round, and the water temperature stays about 40 degrees.

No, it really doesn’t. The entire tour is underground in the mine, so our tours go out rain or shine! (In fact, some people prefer to go on a rainy day so they can do other activities when it’s sunny.)

Yes, we do have some tandem kayaks. If you would prefer to use a tandem with someone in your group, simply let the guides know when you get there, and they will pull out a tandem for you to use. Pricing is still by person.

We provide all necessary equipment.

Kayak Tours : Kayak, Paddle, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

Clear Bottom Kayak Tours:  Kayak, Paddle, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

SUP Tours : NRS Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board or Hylife Sit & Stand Hybrid Board, Paddle, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp.

Boat Tour : Boat, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

Ride Along Child Ticket: PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

The cave boat tour is probably the best choice if you have small children. All children need to be at least about 40 lbs. and able to wear a PFD and helmet and sit still for the full hour-long tour.

The Gorge Underground is dark, but everyone will have a helmet with a headlamp, and the guides also have spotlights to point out various features in the mine.

We’re sorry, but we cannot accommodate children under 3 years of age.

We have had a few, but it doesn’t happen very often at all. The kayaks are relatively stable and are safe even for beginners. The Stand Up Paddle boards are also very wide and stable. A guide with rescue training goes on every tour, just in case.

30 minutes prior to your tour time

Yes! We highly recommend booking tours in advance. In the busy season many of our tours will fill up, and during the slow season, we need to know what tours are going out so that we have guides available.

The tours last one hour, but you will need to arrive 30 minutes prior to your tour time for check in and to put on gear.  Deluxe Tours  last 90 minutes for extra time to explore.

The Gorge Underground does not allow any pets on tour.

The Gorge Underground is open year round! We have more tours during the summer and fall, but we have tours available during every season! (The mine stays about 52 degrees year round, so the water in the mine never freezes!)

If you are coming with more than 12 people, we highly recommend our cave boat tour which can accommodate up to 20 people.

We limit our kayak tours to 12 people and our SUP tours to 10 because it becomes very difficult to hear the guides when you are spread out in a bigger group. For larger family groups or church/scout groups, we occasionally make exceptions to this rule at the manager’s discretion.

Yes! You can get a 10% group discount if you have at least 12 people and one person is paying for the whole group. For church/scout group discounts, please call the office at 844-254-6244.

(Group discounts and church/scout discounts are not available on Saturdays or holiday weekends.)

We understand that sometimes plans change. Please read our policy fully.

Due to the specialty nature of our events and our limited availability we  DO NOT OFFER REFUNDS.  Tickets can be rescheduled  NO LESS  than 7 days before event! A change fee of $10 will be applied per reservation. If you need to reschedule the week of the event you will be charged 50% of your booking as a rescheduling fee. Changes made less than 48 hours prior to tour are not allowed. Ensure you arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to your tour time.

No shows are not eligible for rescheduling, gift card, or refund.

We reserve the right to decline any person as a tour participant if the person’s behavior, health, or mental condition impedes the operation of the tour.

Got a Group?

  • Chevron down What to expect in Spring

Spring in Louisiana gives birth to variety.  As the weather starts to get warmer, alligators and other reptiles begin to emerge from their slumber, leaves come back to the trees, and a variety of regional wildflowers bring color to the swampy landscape.

The temperatures generally hover from 70-80 degrees in the middle of the day. This is our busiest season, so be sure to book in advance if you have a specific time of day in mind for your tour.

Springtime in the south is wonderful and the perfect time to check out our extended Extended Manchac Kayak Tour , which includes ~4 hours on the water and a scenic picnic lunch(optional).  Another great way to beat the heat is joining our Honey Island extended tour in which we float 6 miles down the beautiful Pearl River, stopping frequently for sand bar swimming, snacks and rope swings!

What the spring version of the swamp looks like

  • Chevron down What to expect in Summer

If you are looking to see reptiles… Summer is the season.  The warm air and water temperatures lure our scaly friends out of hiding and into the bayous where we can get a good look.  Unless you’re a heat freak or are looking for a heavy tan, we recommend with morning or late afternoon tours during the months of June-August.  9am tours are the crowd favorite through the summer. Another great way to beat the heat is joining our Honey Island extended tour in which we float 6 miles down the beautiful Pearl River, stopping frequently for sand bar swimming, snacks and rope swings!

a kayak touring past some cypress trees in summer

  • Chevron down What to expect in Autumn

Autumn in Louisiana weather wise is the equivalent of a perfect summer day in the Northern US… 75-90 degrees, lowered humidity, and gentle breeze from the Gulf.  We consider late September through November to be optimal conditions for kayaking in the bayou. Water and air temperatures remain warm enough to sustain alligator and turtle activity and the waning daylight hours make for great golden hour and sunset opportunities on our 4:30 tour through the Manchac.  Towards the end of the season, wintering birds such as bald eagles and barred owls begin to nest among the cypress and water tupelos. For the early risers and adventures, Autumn is the perfect setting for our Extended Manchac Swamp Kayak tour as well as the combination kayak and plantation tour .

What autumn looks like in the swamp

  • Chevron down What to expect in Winter

Winter is a very fickle season in Louisiana.  Temperatures range from 40-85 degrees. It can be sunny, windy, rainy and has even produced a light snow a few times over the last 10 years.  During this season, the reptile activity greatly diminishes as cold blooded animals find safety to wait out most of the winter. However, we do see a spike in migratory and larger wintering birds alike such as egrets, woodpeckers, owls, and even white ibis.  On the warmer end of the spectrum (70 degrees and up) there is still always a possibility for gators and turtles to be seen lining logs and banks along the bayous… we actually have seen an alligator on Christmas day 2 years in a row! Another benefit to winter paddling is the decrease in invasive Water Hyacinth cover…a weed that often congests waterways during warmer times, dies off and allows us access to deeper, less travelled bayous and swamps.  If the temperature sits above 60 degrees, the conditions become perfect for our extended Extended Manchac Swamp Kayak Tour .

What it looks like to kayak in winter, the cypress trees are barren, but beautiful

  • Chevron down What should I bring/wear on tour?

So, now that you are ready for your New Orleans swamp tour, you need to know what essentials to bring! We recommend that to feel prepared, you bring:

  • Sunscreen – kayaks do not offer any protection from the sun, so it is important that you wear sunscreen. We will be out on the water for at least an hour and a half. Don’t forget to apply to the tops of your legs, as we use sit-on-top kayaks.
  • Bug Repellent – while the mosquitoes are not typically a problem on our swamp tours, they can appear during dusk for 1/2 hour, but otherwise, our other tour times they don’t bug us.
  • Cash – cash is most definitely an essential for your swamp tour. It allows you to tip your tour guides.
  • Camera – bring your camera or phone camera so that you can capture the beauty of the swamp and its creatures. We sell waterproof cases for your photo if you need or want them.
  • Comfortable Clothing – Dress for the weather and wear light layered breathable, synthetic clothing/swimsuits during the warm months and a warm thermal cover in the winter for your swamp tour. Sandals or athletic shoes you don’t mind getting wet or dirty.
  • Questions – Our tour guides love answering questions from guests. If you have a question, they will have an answer.
  • Chevron down What is the best time of day for a swamp tour?

It all depends on what your desire is. .  If you want to see the swamp at the prettiest time of day, we recommend the 9:45 AM tour or the early evening tour. The early morning and evening light has warmer tones than midday. Also, these times don’t have the full sun or full shade contrast of midday, so it’s much better for photography.

Wintertime and early spring can bring temps from 30 degrees (rare) to 75 degrees, with an average high temp of about 64 degrees, so our winter and spring kayak tours can be quite pleasant indeed. We recommend booking during the middle of the day.  We usually adjust times for these seasonal changes and offer more mid day tours.  If it’s sunny and the temperatures reach into the high 60’s, alligators will come out on logs to sun.

From there the adventure begins.  Glide through a maze of salt marsh and tidal flats, keeping an eye out for the abundant wildlife that calls this ecosystem home.  Expect to see gregarious pods of bottlenose dolphins and a myriad of birds- herons, eagles, roseate spoonbills and more.

This tour has become a favorite for our guides because the wildlife is so good.

Planning & Restrictions

What to bring.

  • Mask (will get wet – we recommend cloth or bringing an extra)
  • Cell phone (in the event that we need to contact you or you need to contact us prior to the excursion)
  • Comfortable clothes that can get wet (we recommend a bathing suit or active wear)
  • Shoes that can get wet (flip flops are fine)
  • Towel and change of clothes for after the excursion
  • DO NOT BRING ANY VALUABLES OR ITEMS THAT CANNOT GET WET – lost items are very hard to find in the water at night, and anything you take with you will get wet!

MINIMUM PARTICIPATION

This excursion requires a minimum of at least six guests in order to provide the tour. In the event this minimum is not met, we will call you before the excursion to go over alternative options (i.e. reschedule for a different date or time that has the minimum requirement, payment options for a private excursion, or cancel without penalty).

DISCLOSURES

  • Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that is unpredictable and subject to change. Therefore, it is impossible to ensure its brightness levels.
  • Depending on the season, it is possible to find large amounts of sargassum (floating algae) during the tour; this is also a natural phenomenon, but it can become uncomfortable.
  • At times, we experience strong winds and currents in the bay, which increases the effort of paddling and physical activity. However, you’ll be paddling out to a lagoon, so you won’t have to worry about waves in open water.
  • Participants must be comfortable with dark environments. Not recommended for guests who may be prone to anxiety while on crowded and reduced spaces.

HEALTH & AGE RESTRICTIONS

  • Maximum Weight Limit:   Kayaks have a weight limit of 240 pounds per guest, but the total capacity per double kayak is up to 425 pounds between 2 guests.
  • Minimum Age: 6 years old | Participants Ages 6-13 must be accompanied by an adult on the same kayak | Participants Ages 14-17 must have an adult participating on the tour.
  • The following guests cannot participate: • Pregnant women • Guests with recent surgeries • Guests with neck, back, arm or leg problems or casts • Guests who have epilepsy, heart conditions and/or dizziness
  • Other important notes: • We cannot accommodate 3 participants in one kayak. • All guests must be able to communicate in English or Spanish. • Guests that show signs of intoxication by Drugs or Alcohol will not be allowed to participate. • You are responsible for sharing the information throughout this email with the rest of your group and for notifying us ahead of time with any concerns about your health or physical condition for the excursion.

Kayaking Lesson

First time kayaking no problem.

Check out this video for a couple of tips before joining us on your Bio Bay Kayak Tour.

Photography & Video

Be careful with your camera.

Bioluminescence is almost impossible to capture with regular cameras. Plus, everything in your kayak will get wet. We strongly recommend you be careful with your camera.

If you still want to bring a camera, make sure that it is waterproof. We also recommend that you use a leash to attach it to your life vest. Do not expose expensive and SRL cameras to futile risks. The place will be completely dark. Diving in the lagoon is prohibited. If anything falls in the water, it will be impossible to recover.

Kayaking Trip Puerto Rico gives free photos if the equipment works. We’ll upload your photos and offer you links to download your favorites. As a thank you for choosing us as your Puerto Rico operators these images are free.

Notes: Please allow 5-7 days for the link to be sent to you via email. If you would rather not have your photo taken no problem, please just notify your guides at the beginning of each excursion.

The Fajardo Bio Bay

Concentrations of Bioluminescence as found in Laguna Grande , are difficult to find in the planet.

Puerto Rico has the main bioluminescent bays in the world. If you haven’t done a bioluminescence kayak tour , the Fajardo Bio Bay is your best option .

It is the brightest bioluminescent bay in the main island. Its bioluminescence is among the best in the world.

The Fajardo Bio Bay is inside a natural reserve. Its entrance is a beautiful mangrove forest. You will see a great natural scenery in your way to the main show.

The driving distance from the San Juan Metro Area is one hour.  Great local-food restaurants and kiosks are along the route. Many of Puerto Rico’s best things to do are in the same area too.

El Yunque National Forest is minutes away! You can have a great full-day trip to the east coast of Puerto Rico.

This is our top-rated tour offered by Naples’s top-rated tour company. Our group size is 25% smaller than any other group tour in the area. As of December 2022, we are the only company running this route. By doing this, we have limited the traffic coming and going through this area, giving each guest a better opportunity to spot wildlife and enjoy the Everglades in a truly serene atmosphere.

  • Description
  • Meeting Point
  • Photo Gallery

Our Manatees and Mangrove Tunnels Tour is by far our top-rated tour. Hands down, there is no other kayak route or company in Naples and Marco Island that offers a better opportunity to spot such a variety of wildlife. Manatees and Mangroves are not even half of what this tour offers. Guests will visit numerous ecosystems, including the Saltmarsh, a heavily visited feeding ground for Wood storks, White Ibis, Tricolored Herons, and the super rare Rosette Spoonbill. As kayakers venture deeper into the 10,000 Islands Wildlife Refuge, they will encounter the county’s most extensive and complete Mangrove tunnels. As of December 2022, we are the only company on this route.

Small Groups & Why is it important?

Large group size is the most common issue causing a negative experience. We have decided to prioritize your experience over selling more tickets. You might find other companies advertising smaller group sizes, but this is primarily a function of their business and is not a decision based on choice. This is the number one tour provided by the top-ranked company in Naples. Tomorrow we could up our capacity to 12 guests per guide, selling 8 more tickets per day, but that would lower the quality of your experience. We are proud of this tour and always try to ensure each experience is precisely what we say it is. We believe that limiting our group size along with the frequency of this tour is the best way for us to control our quality. Below is a list of common issues fixed by limiting the group size.

  • I couldn’t hear the guide.
  • Some kayakers couldn’t keep up.
  • We were constantly in the back.
  • We never saw the wildlife.

Why a Shuttle?

This tour launches within the 10,000 Island Wildlife Refuge but ends outside the refuge at a public marina. Utilizing the shuttle allows us to explore multiple types of habitats. Our launch would be considered freshwater in the summer, but our end point would be fully saltwater. Just as changes in salinity will change the fish species found it will also change the plant and tree life which can then change the mammals, reptiles, and birdlife found on the water’s edge.

So what does this mean for you? In a nutshell, within a 3-hour tour, you will experience most of the types of habitats within the Everglades. At the start guests will paddle a channel covered in cattails signaling a high nitrogen content within freshwater. A consequence of farming upstream and the channeling of the historical sheet flow. After passing the cattails, you will travel through the salt marsh and popular feeding ground for log-legged wading birds such as the great egret and great blue heron. As you travel south, heading towards the gulf of Mexico, you will notice a change in the floura going from sedges and grasses to the saltwater-loving mangroves. This is where things really start to get interesting and unique.

By limiting our group size and frequency of our tours we increase your chances of spotting wildlife. This tour consistently spots unique and exciting wildlife. The diversity and rare opportunities to spot unique species is mind-boggling. This tour has everything from black bears to manatees and blue crabs to rosette spoonbills. Like all wildlife tours, it can be slow, but from January through April, guests always have a great chance of spotting the following.

The term mangrove may refer to a specific tree or a forest. One could say this tour paddles through the mangroves, or you might hear your guide state this is a Red Mangrove and notice the roots.

Mangroves can form literal tunnels that cover the canopy above. These tunnels are world-renowned and can not be enjoyed anywhere else in the United States. The mangrove tunnels on our route are narrow long, and explored by no other kayak company. This means on a given day only 16 people will paddle through these tunnels on a given day. The lack of human contact allows for encounters with more elusive critters, such as the river otter.

  • Red Mangrove
  • White Mangrove
  • Black Mangrove

kayak tour tour

Pictured above are primarily Red Mangroves. The Mangroves will continue to grow thicker and thicker, restricting the water flow. As the mangroves grow thicker the water will ebb and flow faster and faster digging out deeper waterways.

Experienced Guides

As we mentioned the location of the tour is unparalleled, but the environment is only half of the experience. The quality and experience of your guide is what will make your tour memorable. The average time of employment for our guides is 4 years.

Kayaking tour reviews

Kayaking tour faqs, how fit do i need to be to participate in a kayaking trip.

You don’t need to be a super athlete! But a general level of health and fitness is needed to make the most of the experience. The physical level of kayaking and other activities differs between trips, so be sure to read the Essential Trip Information in detail to understand what level of exercise is involved.

If you’re not sure if you’re able to participate in any of our Active Adventure trips, visit your doctor to see if you’re in healthy shape to fully enjoy the activities included.

Do I need to train for a kayaking trip?

Training isn't necessary, but as many of our trips can involve multiple days of hiking, biking and water-based activities, it’s generally a good idea to start walking more at home, upping your pace at the gym or undertaking regular cardio exercise prior to the trip.

Will I get to experience the local culture on a kayaking trip?

Outdoor activities and being immersed in nature are a focus of our Active Adventures, but we also know that a lot of the fun happens on the sidelines. That's why these trips still feature the same local interactions and real-life experiences that are a hallmark of the Intrepid experience. Our aim is to help you discover a destination in a new way while learning about the culture and its people.

Do I need to bring equipment with me?

No. There is no compulsory equipment on any of the trips. Bikes, kayaks and safety gear will be provided for you, however, it's important to check the packing list for each particular itinerary as there may be items we suggest you bring, such as cycling gloves (that may come useful on other activities like zip-lining), gel seats, day packs or water shoes. Check the packing list of your trip for a full list, including what clothing and footwear might be needed.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance?

Absolutely. Because of the active nature of our trips, we require all travellers to hold an appropriate level of insurance coverage prior to departure. This includes coverage for included and optional activities on your tour. Most insurance providers will cover all the activities we offer on our trips, but it's important you read your product information summary (or equivalent insurance policy document) carefully to ensure you're covered.

When reviewing your insurance coverage, keep an eye out for included activities such as Via Ferrata, rafting and high-altitude trekking (checking what exact altitude you are covered for is essential). If you have problems finding insurance, please  contact our adventure consultants for further advice.

Who will carry my luggage for me?

We take care of all the little details so you can focus on spotting wildlife or paddling those rapids. We transport your main luggage for you while you are trekking, cycling or kayaking, but we recommend carrying a day pack to hold a few essential items such as sunscreen, snacks, camera, water bottle and any other items you may need for the day.

↠ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ↞

  • Chevron down Where are you located?

Our launch site is in quaint Mary Esther, just west of Fort Walton Beach. The address is 101 W Miracle Strip Parkway . Mary Esther is only 10 miles from downtown Destin.  However, during peak season, April – September, traffic in the Destin/Ft. Walton Beach area can cause a major slowdown.  Please leave ample time to make it to our launch before the start of the tour.  We cannot hold the tour for late arrivals.  The launch is directly behind Native Cove Landing (which is under construction.)  A local artist is painting a mural on the entire building, so it is easy to spot!

You can park on top of the building or take the gravel side road immediately east of the building to park directly next to the launch.  Pardon the dust as the building and surrounding area are finalized. (The front of the building can be dark at night. We recommend you drive to the back of the building, which will be fully lit for the night tours.)

  • Chevron down Is there a weight limit?
  • Due to the unique materials and shape of the clear kayaks, our manufacturer has provided a strict limit of 250 lbs per person.
  • No more than 425 lbs of combined weight per kayak – 2 people.
  • No more than 225 lbs per paddle board.
  • Chevron down Are the kayaks tandem or solo?
  • Each of our kayaks is tandem (made for 2 paddlers). Bookings for even numbers of guests will be in tandem kayaks.
  • However, the seats are removable, and if your party has an odd number of paddlers, we can accommodate the kayak as a single.
  • Remember, the same 250-pound PER-PERSON weight limit applies even if you are taking a kayak out as a single person.
  • Chevron down What should I bring on my kayak tour?

We encourage you to bring the following:

  • Water (preferably in a reusable water bottle)
  • Swimsuit/clothes that you don’t mind getting a little wet – dress for cooler nights
  • Sunscreen/sunglasses/hat
  • Towel for after the trip
  • Any extra gear you’d like! Remember – the less gear, the more visibility through the kayak!
  • Chevron down Are children allowed on tour?
  • Our tours are family-friendly, and children ages 5+ are welcome on our daytime, sunset, and glow tours.
  • Haunted Tour children ages 12+ may participate.
  • Children 6 and under are legally required to wear a life jacket while on the water. We provide lifejackets for children over 30 pounds.
  • We require children 30 pounds or under to bring their own Coast Guard-approved life jackets, as the size is very specific, and safety is of the utmost importance.
  • One adult must attend for every child under 15 years of age. Children under 15 cannot paddle without an adult, and minors under 18 are not allowed to paddle without an adult present. We recommend a moderate fitness level for those kayaking with children, as the adult will do all the work.
  • We require one adult per child aged 14 and under.  For teens 15-17, we require at least one adult to attend the experience. However, there does not have to be a one-to-one adult ratio, as required for children 14 and under. We rely upon the adult to determine if the teen has the physical ability to navigate the kayak in various tides and winds.
  • Chevron down Are pets allowed on tour?
  • We love furry friends, but to preserve the fragile ecosystem, pets cannot come on the tour.
  • Chevron down What level of experience is required?
  • We welcome paddlers of all skill levels; however, kayaking can be a physically demanding activity.  Winds, tides, and weather can all impact the difficulty of the paddle.  Please reach out to us to discuss further if you have questions.
  • Adults paddling with a child and solo paddles require moderate physicality as you will do all the work.
  • Beginners are welcome on Paddleboard tours, but moderate physicality is required.
  • Chevron down Can you accommodate large groups?

Yes! We can accommodate special parties by assigning two guides.  Please call or email to check on availability for large groups.

  • Chevron down Do you offer a military discount?

We proudly offer a 10% discount to all active and retired military personnel.  We are centrally located between Eglin and Hurlburt Air Force bases.

  • Chevron down Is it appropriate to give a tip/gratuity to our tour guide?
  • Our guides are passionate about their work and will do their best to ensure you have a great experience
  • Tips are greatly appreciated. We like to say, “If you enjoyed your ride, tip your guide!”
  • Chevron down What is the cancellation policy?
  • We are a small family-owned business; our tours are limited to 5 kayaks.  When you book, the seats are held and are no longer available to the general public.  Late changes, cancellations, and no-shows make it impossible for us to refill the seats reserved for your party.
  • Tours can be booked with or without trip protection. If you book and do not purchase Trip Protection, you can cancel up to 48 hours before the start of the tour for a full refund. No refunds/reschedule within 48 hours of the tour.
  • If you purchase Trip Protection when booking, you can cancel or reschedule your tour for any reason up to 12 hours before your scheduled tour time.  This protects you against unforeseen changes to your plans.  If you cancel 12 before the tour, you will be refunded for the full amount of each ticket, less the cost of the trip protection and processing fees.
  • Trip protection is calculated at 10% of each reservation.
  • If Get Up and Go Kayaking cancels a tour due to inclement weather, guests will be offered the choice of rescheduling, a refund, or a gift certificate.
  • Chevron down Why choose us?
  • Our kayaks and paddleboards are CLEAR, providing an unobstructed, 360-degree view above and below the water.
  • Your experience will be personal, as tours are limited to 5 kayaks.
  • You will explore salt marshes, remote sand beaches, and hidden coves surrounded by ancient dunes. An ecosystem like no other in Florida!
  • You are contributing to preserving this unique ecosystem as a portion of each tour is donated to the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge.
  • Our private launch allows you to escape the busy downtown bustle of  Destin for a serene adventure in nature.
  • You will learn about local ecology and wildlife from our passionate, expert, CPR-certified guides.
  • Make unforgettable memories with family and friends, or even embark on a solo adventure while exploring the beauty and wonder of the great outdoors.
  • You are supporting a small, woman-owned business.

Quick Details

  • Hour Glass Duration: 2 hours

Clock Time of day: Morning, afternoon, early evening

Discover the Hidden World of Sarasota’s Mangrove Tunnels on Kayak

Paddle with us through otherworldly mangrove tunnels, which are home to a plethora of birds and all sorts of marine life. Keep a lookout on the open water portion of the tour for a chance to encounter manatees or bottlenose dolphins up close!

Launch Location Instructions

  • The nearest address for the Lido Mangrove Tunnels Tour launch is 190 Taft Drive, Sarasota, FL 34236 .
  • Once you arrive at this location, enter through the gate into Ted Sperling Nature Park.
  • Find a parking spot, and ask any staff member for Almost Heaven!

Common Questions

  • Chevron down What should I bring?
  • Water! The Florida sun is hot, and we want you to stay hydrated. Help us reduce plastic waste by drinking from reusable containers rather than single use plastic bottles if possible!
  • We can provide small drybags to protect phones, cameras, car keys, etc.
  • Chevron down What should I wear?

Most people wear t-shirts, shorts, and/or bathing suits. During the winter months, we suggest a light wind breaker or a sweatshirt depending on the temperature and the wind conditions. The most important thing is to be comfortable. As for shoes, wear something that you don’t mind getting wet — flip flops, water shoes, or old sneakers are ideal.

  • Chevron down Will my tour be cancelled if it rains?

Your safety is paramount, so cancelling a tour depends on the weather conditions. If the forecast is a light drizzle, then the tour launches at the regularly scheduled time. If there are thunderstorms or any hint of lightning, then the tour is postponed or cancelled. If we cancel the tour due to weather and you are unable to reschedule, we issue a full refund.

  • Chevron down Is the kayak tour okay for children?

The Lido Mangrove Tunnels Tour is ideal for all ages. For children, we have smaller life vests and lighter paddles. We also suggest tandem (double) kayaks, so that an adult can sit in the back of the same kayak with his/her child and help with paddling.

  • Chevron down Is the Lido Mangrove Tunnels Tour suitable for new kayakers?

Yes, this tour is great for beginners as well as advanced kayakers. We start each Sarasota kayak tour with on-water paddling instructions for those who need it. Then your guide provides feedback and help along the way.

  • Chevron down Do the kayaks fit all body types?

We have kayaks for all shapes and sizes. We assist you with finding the right kayak at the time of your tour. Our goal is to make sure that you are comfortable and enjoy your adventure.

  • Chevron down What is the water like on this tour?

This tour is in the swallow, protected waters of Sarasota Bay, so there is limited influence from wind and currents. The water is usually very clear, which makes it great for viewing sea life.

  • Chevron down Will I see manatees and dolphins?

They are wild animals, so it’s always a matter of luck, but manatees are frequently seen from March through December, when the waters are warm enough for them. The remaining months of the year, manatees can be seen, but it is less frequent. Dolphins may be seen year-round as they feed and travel through the surrounding mangrove islands and channels.

  • Chevron down Are there alligators on this tour?

No… We get this question all the time! There are no alligators on the Lido Mangrove Tunnels Tour. However, our Myakka River Kayak Tour has lots of alligators.

  • Chevron down What kinds of birds are visible on this tour?

Depending on the time of year, a wide variety of tropical birds can be seen on the Lido Mangrove Tunnels Tour: ospreys, great blue herons, little blue herons, white egrets, yellow-crowned night herons, snowy egrets, little green herons, tri-colored herons, black-crowned night herons, cormorants, pelicans, and occasionally wood storks, roseate spoonbills, reddish egrets, bald eagles, white pelicans, and that’s only to name a few.

  • Chevron down What types of live shells do we see on the tour, and can I take them home?

There is an abundance of live shells on this tour that can easily be seen in these shallow protected waterways: the Florida horse conch (the state shell), lightning whelks, true tulips, banded tulips, clams, scallops, and crown conchs are quite common. In addition to these beautiful live shells, you can also view sea stars (starfish), sea urchins, sea anemones, sea cucumbers, and many more invertebrates. We stress the word “live“ because the shells are living creatures. They’re protected and must stay in the water and can’t go home with you. But you can certainly enjoy them on your tour.

Xander was a great guide for a bunch of kayak newbies from Atlanta. He was really patient with our large group especially since we had a couple of incidents and challenges. Xander was really friendly and made our experience very personable with a native flute performance in the Emerald Cave and on the river as well as sharing fascinating facts about the areas we were exploring. Would definitely recommend this experience and going with Evolution Expedition. Xander was an amazing guide and the other guides were also very nice and helpful when we interacted with them.

Chanjira was incredible. The whole trip was perfect, from pick up to drop off. Chanjira went above and beyond with extra snacks, incredible knowledge of the area and great humor along the ride. It was a windy day and she got us all through with ease. The kayak tour was perfect. Having been to Las Vegas 17 times and never leaving the strip, this exceeded my expectations and I cannot believe I have missed out all these years. It was a beautiful ride. THANK YOU!

Took the Hoover Dam and Hot Springs trip with the best guide, Michael. He helped make a challenging excursion of 19.7km safe, relaxed, and fun, even for less active participants. We felt very looked after. The views were incredible and soaking in the hot springs made the long paddle absolutely worthwhile. Seeing big-horned goats was a wonderful bonus. With the fun facts that Michael provided along the way, it was an experience I will remember.

We had an excellent guided kayak tour down the Colorado River. Our guides were very knowledgeable of the surroundings and put the safety and comfort of their guests first. It was a great way to spend an afternoon away from the Las Vegas strip. The tour is suitable for all experience levels from amateur kayakers to experienced. I highly recommend this company!

We had the deluxe kayaking trip with Shay!! It was FANTASTIC!! She knew her stuff!! We loved every second of this kayak tour. The sites are amazing along the trip. The lunch was delicious! We had a couple who had ended up sick due to immune disease and Marnie graciously refunded their money. Definitely will use them any time we visit Las Vegas to kayak again!!

This was our third year in a row taking the Emerald Cave kayak tour. Evolution Expeditions has facilitated all our kayaking excursions and done a wonderful job. Their guides are all excellent; professional, friendly and well versed on the geography of the area. This year Ashley and Jon were our kayak guides and they were fantastic! If you're thinking about going kayaking down the Colorado River make sure you go with Evolution Expeditions!

Cocoa Beach Kayak Tours - Frequently Asked Questions

Cocoa Beach Kayak Tours FAQs

What time of the year has bioluminescence in cocoa beach.

Bioluminescence occurs in Cocoa Beach throughout the year.  Between June and September, you can see bioluminescence created by tiny dinoflagellate plankton.

In the winter months, comb jellies put on a glowing bioluminescent show beneath the waters.

During certain months you can see both dinoflagellate plankton and comb jellies.  The result is truly spectacular.

How Do You Find Bioluminescence In Cocoa Beach?

Although it’s possible to see bioluminescence every night in Cocoa Beach, the best times to go are shortly before, during, or shortly after a new moon.

This way the night is darker and you’ll be able to see the bioluminescence more clearly.

The best places for seeing bioluminescence at Cocoa Beach include the Indian River, the Indian River Lagoon, and the Banana River.

Why Does The Water Glow In Cocoa Beach?

The water at Cocoa Beach glows due to the presence of either dinoflagellate plankton and/or comb jellies.

Both kinds of marine life emit glowing light. The light is caused by an internal chemical reaction that is released as energy.

Dinoflagellates produce a sparkling blue-green light that is often triggered by movement.

This includes the swirl of your paddle, fish dashing through the water, or manatees swimming gracefully beneath the surface.

There are few better ways to enjoy Cocoa Beach than by heading out on the water on a kayak. Paddle quietly through mangrove tunnels, tranquil rivers, and scenic lagoons.

Experience Thrilling Adventures with these 8 La Jolla Kayak Tours

E veryone that visits San Diego should do one of the La Jolla Kayak tours at least once. There’s nothing more peaceful than going to spot gorgeous coves and intriguing caves in the calm ocean while the sun is shining.

Undoubtedly, La Jolla is one of the best places in San Diego for a kayaking adventure. There are numerous kayak tour opportunities from hillside towns. These tours allow visitors to hit the Pacific Ocean and see unique forms of nature and wildlife.

Greg and I love kayaking in La Jolla and it is always a fun outing. It is pretty beginner friendly too, so even if you have never been in a kayak before, this is totally doable. The only tricky part is getting through the waves on the shore, but the kayaking tour guides will help you through. You will get wet though, so I recommend leaving your valuables in the provided lockers or bringing a little floating dry bag to keep your things safe. Definitely wear sunscreen and I recommend a hat and, unless you wear only swimwear, some quick-drying clothes (or bring some to change into later).

Here’s our list of the top kayak tours in La Jolla, you must check these out during your visit!

Each participant must arrive at the departure location 30 minutes before to get organized. The staff members will get you ready and outfitted so it doesn’t cut into your kayaking time.

2 Hour Whale Watching Kayak Tour for Two

Now, for something a little different. This two hour sea kayaking La Jolla tour brings you to see grey whales.

Yes, you read that right. Enjoy an intimate experience for two people as you paddle your way off the coast of La Jolla in the hope of seeing grey whales. Learn about the creature’s behavior and how they live their lives while seeing La Jolla from a whole other perspective.

The tour’s meeting point will be 2261 Avenida De La Playa, La Jolla, Ca, 92037. Get there 30 minutes before to get geared up. From there you’ll head down to the beach for your safety briefing and tutorial with a certified guide. Depart from the shores and head 2 miles out to try to spot some whales.

There will be plenty of breaks along the way for you to rehydrate and explanations about the marine life. One great thing about this activity is that the company donates a percentage of every booking to Greenwave & Urban Surf 4 Kids, so your money goes toward a good cause.

Kayak Tour of the 7 Caves

Seeing the seven impressive caves of La Jolla on your own without a guide can be a difficult and dangerous task. Join this two hour La Jolla cove kayaking tour to discover the popular seven caves, including Arch Cave, Clams’ Cave, and Jim’s Cave.

Float through the water seeing places you wouldn’t be able to alone. Admire awe-inspiring sandstone formations while learning how they were created. Get up close to leopard sharks, sea lions, dolphins, and more.

Anyone who hasn’t kayaked before will get full training upon arrival. By the time you get back to shore, you’ll be a professional. All equipment needed is included: helmets, life jackets, and of course, your La Jolla kayak rental.

Leave all valuables behind before heading out to sea. You’re promised to get wet, at least from the waist down, on this tour.

Like most tours on this list, get to the meeting point 30 minutes early. Your guide will meet you at 2158 Avenida De La Playa.

La Jolla Kayak and Snorkel Tour

Why just kayak when you can snorkel as well? This two and a half hour La Jolla kayak snorkel tour is set in the Ecological Reserve, and wow, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss out on.

Kayak your way from the La Jolla shores through jaw-dropping caves before heading out to open water for snorkeling. Wave at the leopard sharks as they swim around you — don’t be frightened, they won’t harm you. Other forms of sea life can be seen, too, like rays, shovelnose guitarfish, rockfish, sea lions, and spiny lobster. You’ll feel like one of them for a couple of hours.

The sea cave kayak and snorkeling tour includes essential gear like masks, fins, paddles, etc. If you do happen to have your own snorkeling equipment, you’re allowed to bring it along and use it. Just let the company know before.

An experienced guide will be in a nearby kayak at all times in case there’s trouble with gear or you need anything.

Kayak Rental For Two People From La Jolla Shores

Escape the hustle and bustle of the San Diego lifestyle and spend time with your significant other, best friend, or child on this hour and a half double kayak tour of the La Jolla caves.

Row yourselves around the La Jolla Ecological Reserve at a pace that suits both of you. There’s no guide with you, so you can check out whatever you want.

A safety briefing will be provided before, as well as a list of locations you can and can’t visit. Arrive at the meeting point (Everyday California’s Office) 30 minutes early, your kayak and paddles will be waiting.

Depending on the time of year, kayakers may see different species of fish, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and whales. Don’t panic if you do! They’re enjoying the water as much as you are and won’t harm you.

Anyone who takes part in this La Jolla shores kayaking excursion must be a competent swimmer in case the kayak topples over when you’re out at sea alone. Unfortunately, you cannot bring the kayak inside any of the 7 caves. If you want to look inside, consider one of the other tours on this list instead.

90 Minute Kayak Rental In La Jolla

Take part in a 90 minute guided kayak tour of La Jolla. Grasp the basics of Kayaking, from steering to paddling, and see a whole new side to La Jolla you never even knew existed. Follow your guide past the breathtaking caves, charming kelp forests, and underwater canyons while listening to interesting stories and facts.

With some luck, you might see different types of dolphins that are known to congregate around certain areas. These include bottlenose dolphins, white-sided dolphins, and common dolphins.

On average, each tour covers about six miles round trip. So, you’ll be kayaking for the majority of the time. Experience isn’t necessary. If you need help, your guide will be by your side every second. When you return to shore, a scorching hot beverage will be waiting for you to warm you up.

Every participant should bring shoes which can get wet, a bathing suit or swimming shorts, sunscreen, and a strap to hold their sunglasses in case they fall into the sea. You can leave a change of clothes and valuables behind in one of the lockers provided.

There’s a minimum booking requirement of two people. The maximum number of people that can go on this tour is nine, so reserve your spot to avoid disappointment.

La Jolla kayak tours are a great way to see areas you wouldn’t be able to on a larger boat. Once you have a guide by your side, it opens up many opportunities. Plus, you know you will be completely safe wherever you go.

However, it is always recommended to check the weather forecast and sea conditions before you go as they can change rapidly and also double check with the tour operator to ensure they will be operating in November.

What Should I Bring on a Lagos Kayak Tour?

kayak tour tour

As most kayaking tours provide all the necessary equipment and gear, you won’t need to bring much with you. However, here are some recommended items to bring along on your Lagos kayak tour:

  • Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, the sun’s UV rays can be pretty strong out on the water (the refraction off the water can cause some serious burns), so be sure to bring water-resistant sunscreen with a high SPF.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the glare with a good pair of polarized sunglasses.
  • Hat: A hat will provide some additional protection from the sun and make it easier to see.
  • Waterproof camera/phone case: If you want to take pictures during your kayak tour, make sure to protect your phone or camera with a waterproof case.
  • Comfortable clothes: Wear a bathing suit or quick-drying clothes that you don’t mind getting wet.
  • Water shoes: Chances are that you’ll be stepping on rocks at one point or another during your tour, and water shoes will provide a bit more traction and keep your feet feeling good if you happen to step on a sharp one!
  • Towel: Water naturally drips down the paddle and directly into your lap, so if you don’t have a skirt on then you’re going to get a bit wet.
  • Water bottle: Paddling can be a workout! Make sure to stay hydrated.
  • Snacks: Some tours may not provide food, so bring some light snacks if you tend to get peckish.
  • Change of clothes: If your accommodation is a far distance from your tour’s meeting point, then you’ll be glad to have a dry set of clothes to change into instead of waiting until you return to your hotel.
  • Plastic bag for wet clothes: You’ll need somewhere to put your wet clothes and towel after the tour.
