EAGLE ONE HAS THE BEST WILDLIFE TOURS IN KETCHIKAN! ★★★★★
Great Whale Watching Adventure. Loved being on a smaller boat with a small group. The Capitan and Crew did a great job tracking whales for viewing. Really enjoyed them sharing their knowledge and insights. In additional to whales we saw bald eagles. A true highlight of our trip to Alaska.
Not optimistic, raining, foggy, grey, no whales. Captain changed course, sun broke and then whales ! We were out much longer than the scheduled tour time to ensure we got to see whales. Captain and crew were excellent, very fun day, highly recommend.
We had a fantastic time whale watching with Eagle One. We got to see several humpback whales. One humpback even swam underneath our boat. It was amazing! The crew was friendly and informative. The view of the landscape was incredible. We would certainly recommend this tour!
Outstanding experience, knowledgeable father and daughter duo, amazing wildlife and views too! We travelled with our two boys aged 10 & 11. Both loved every minute and we would highly recommend the trip! If anything we just wish it could have been longer!!!
Ketchikan Whale Watching, Wildlife Tours and Excursions
Tongass national forest, whales, stellar sea lions and seals.
Ketchikan, Alaska, a true gem among places to visit throughout the world! The awe-inspiring beauty that surrounds Ketchikan can’t be explained in words without setting eyes on this majestic environment. From the rugged terrain that encompasses the old growth forest of the Tongass National Forest down to the vibrantly rich waters meeting the land. Each day surprises visitors with landscapes and wildlife that make Ketchikan, Alaska a bucket list destination.
What’s special about Tongass National Forest
To understand a place, we first must look at what makes Ketchikan so special. First and foremost, Ketchikan is located in the heart of the Tongass National Forest , which is our nation’s largest national forest, making up over 16.7 illion acres. This region in combination with British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest encompasses the largest temperate rainforest on earth! The Tongass contains a series of islands making up an unparalleled archipelago referred to as the Alexander Archipelago, with glacial fjords such as the national monument Misty Fjords, countless streams and old growth forests filled with cedar, spruce and hemlock trees. The abundant wildlife that calls this space home include bears, wolves, black-tailed deer, bald eagles and mountain goats.
Wildlife Gulf of Alaska and Pacific Ocean
What wildlife can we see on our Ketchikan whale watching and wildlife tour? Where the Tongass meets the mighty Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Alaska is where our gaze looks to the inhabitants of the water world that surrounds the forest. Above sea level you can expect to see orcas, humpback whales, sea lions, seals, otters and porpoises. The vastness of the ocean and the nutrient rich waters bring the wildlife into a higher concentration during summer months. Bald Eagles, Marbled Murrelets, Herring Gulls and Murres work cohesively with the marine mammals to target the rich feeding grounds from above and below the waterline. It’s a genuine spectacle to watch a group of humpback whales bubble feeding on the surface with hundreds of herring gulls and Murres working the bait from above and below.
Ketchikan, Alaska: Marine Wildlife Alaska Whale Watching Excursions
Humpback Whales One of the largest draws for visitors in Alaska each summer is the enormous numbers of humpback whales. Wildlife tours and whale watching boats take thousands of travelers to see this unique spectacle. Humpback whales measuring 50 feet in length and weighing upwards of 35 tons travel north to Alaska waters annually to take advantage of the abundant and concentrated food sources. While mating and calving in tropical waters such as Hawaii and Mexico, summertime marks a season for traveling north to feed. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see humpback whales bubble net feeding while eating krill and other small fishes that amount to 1.5 tons daily. Ketchikan in particular and Southeast Alaska holds one of the highest concentrations of humpbacks in the world! Book your wildlife tour to see this happening live.
When we begin to think of traditional Alaska waters and the most Apex predator in all the planet’s oceans, we must recognize and attribute this title to the Orca or Killer Whale. A mature killer whale is anywhere between 25-30 feet in length and is identified by their characteristic black and white patterns. The killer whale is the largest member of the dolphin family and lives in groups called pods. They attained their name because they were observed killing and eating whales. They hunt both fish and marine mammals in complete darkness by using echolocation through a series of clicks similar to sonar. Alaska orcas and killer whales are either resident orcas or transient killer whales. While resident orcas eating primarily salmon represent larger pods and more social behaviors, this is contrary to transient orcas who feed on marine mammals and hunt in smaller pods. Southeast Alaska including Ketchikan lies in the heart of the epicenter to see orcas and killer whales in the wild . Regardless of which pod you may see, if you get the opportunity to view these majestic specimens in their natural habitat you’re in for a real treat!
Ketchikan Alaska Wildlife: Steller Sea Lions
Personally one of my favorite marine wildlife mammals has to be the Steller sea lion , which is the largest of the family. The Steller sea lions inhabiting the surrounding waters off Ketchikan can weigh up to 1,200 pounds and measure in at over 10 feet. These incredibly adapted marine predators hunt numerous fishes including salmon, herring and cod, while also taking advantage of squid feed as well. The best opportunity to see Steller sea lions lie in the open ocean waters where they concentrate around rock pinnacles and buoys as they rest in between foraging on these haul-out locations. Our Ketchikan wildlife and ecotours make it a point to venture to the most vibrant waters where your chance to see the Steller sea lion in action reaches its highest potential.
Ketchikan Alaska Wildlife: Harbor Seals
Harbor Seals don’t have quite the stature of the Steller sea lion, but boy are they cute. They can be seen at many local Ketchikan attractions including the historic Creek Street bridge, where they are seen blitzing around the creek eating salmon running upstream as well as in nearshore coastal waters around kelp beds, reefs, gravel beaches and rock outcroppings. Harbor seals look like little marine puppies in the water peeping their heads just above the surface to monitor the surrounding area. Mature harbor seals grow to 5-6 feet and weigh in around 200 pounds. Harbor seals eat mainly fish and invertebrates and their primary predators are the killer whale, sharks and bald eagles.
Be sure to check out our articles on Alaska bird species , salmon and jellyfish that can be seen on our Ketchikan whale watching and wildlife shore excursion. Following that, don’t miss the Intertidal Zone article that discusses kelp forests, starfish, sea cucumbers, urchins, sea otters and minks.

We were on a cruise so we only had time to do a half day charter otherwise we would’ve done a full day, but even with half a day we came out with 4 halibut (1 each)! We only had about 45 minutes to salmon fish after getting our halibut, and unfortunately did not catch any but we did have a great set up for it and I’m sure we would’ve caught some if we had more time. Colby was great and helped with everything from setting up our line to taking pictures of us with our catches. He was very personable and friendly. - billsA6434HX 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Nice, boat and gear We booked a trip with captain, Scot Edgar everything was great. His boat is amazing. His gear is top line he was on time. He did all the safety information. We went out to go halibut fishing and first and we got one Halibut. While we were out there, we were drilled on what to do, and what not to do, which is fine, but during the trip among being a drill sergeant, he also threw a paper towel roll in the ocean along with a paper towel. I don’t condone littering no matter what. we pulled up and then went salmon fishing we were using the Downrigger’s. that were top of the line. We as fisherman could only stand and watch though and the only time we could grab the fishing rod was when there was a fish on it, and then we got grilled on how bad we were at reeling them in not reeling them in fast enough, and when he knocked one off with a net that I had a hole in it, it was our fault. This was the first day we have booked a second day. Also all four of us talked about it that night. how we would like to catch more fish an Reel them like we want to Reel them in we didn’t care about losing fish The next day started out. Similarly, he did give us a choice of going salmon, fishing first or halibut fishing first, we chose to go salmon fishing. It started all over again, with just brow beating all of us whenever a fish was on he tell us one thing and then tell us another at one point he went running in to get his rain gear and the strap cut on alarm chair, then flipped off and hit one of us in the side of the head and knocked his glasses off. He still had the same net in the boat we lost a couple fish do to that of course it was our fault not his all Captain Scott is worried about is getting his face and the fish, and as many as possible on his website if you like this kind of a fishing trip ice icy you need to go with him as for me I’ve been fishing all my life and I will never go with him again. When I finally had enough of him and told him so he became very irritated started throwing fishing rods. When he pulled everything in, he got in the cabin share crank the throttle up to full, crank his stereo up to full headed for the dock. On the way in, he text the police to meet us at the dock. The police called him back. They were at the dock and they would not wait for him. I will say this, though he reimburse us for half of that trip that’s about the only thing he did, correct Read more Written July 19, 2023

We had a great day on the water with Captain Sam Pflaun of Baranof fishing excursions.A great day on the water in Ketchian Alaska.Sam worked very hard to put us on the fish and if no bits he would reposition.Capt. Sam was very polite and took the time to educate us i.e. equipment use, fishhing technique and types of fish we caught.Sam did a great job cleaning fish we were to have for lunch. he was very attentive at all times.8/23/22 My wife Carole would highly recommend this trip. Thanks Sam Read more Written September 7, 2022

Unfortunately, Scott put us with another one of his guys as Scott was with another crew. I have no complaints regarding the effort to catch fish or the fish that were caught. Unfortunately I have to say it was one of the worst experiences I have had with a service you are paying for. Captain was fine 80% of the time but was so rude and unpleasant the other 20% that it just ruined the experience from start to finish. Would take my money elsewhere next time. We were blind sided by Princess Cruise by announcing that they were slowing the ship down and would no longer be stopping in Ketchikan. (Scheduled maintenance WTF) . Scott made an exception and refund our deposit completely. Princess could learn a thing or two about business ethics from Reel Charter Fishing. I have no plans on booking a cruise through Princess again but I'm making plans to book with Scott again. Read more Written April 30, 2022

CRUISE LOCAL WATERS
Explore the beauty of Southeast Alaska on our Ketchikan boat excursion! Ketchikan is a small fishing town known for its breathtaking seascapes, diverse wildlife, artistic spirit, and close-knit community. We invite you to experience a little bit of it all on our Lighthouse, Totems and Eagles Excursion.
While on board one of our tour vessels, you can immerse yourself in the beautiful views of our world’s largest temperate rainforest, the Tongass National Forest, in full panorama; admire the stunning artwork and cultural history captured in the Alaska Native totem poles and clan house at Totem Bight State Park; uncover the unique past and present of Guard Island Lighthouse; and keep your eyes open for a plethora of wildlife opportunities, including guaranteed sightings of American bald eagles.
Alaska is home to 15,000 mated pairs of bald eagles, and the open-air observation deck on each of our vessels is the perfect spot to view this majestic bird. Binoculars are provided so that you can get a great look at them as they soar through the sky, catch a fish, feed their young, or perch nearby. The crisp Alaskan air can be chilly, so when you’re ready to get warm, visit our heated main cabin, where you can enjoy a taste of local cuisine as your captain and guides share their own stories of Alaskan living.
SEE WHY WE'RE AN AWARD-WINNING TOUR
It was a cool and rainy day for this tour which turned out to be perfect for finding eagles! We saw 38. The crew of the boat was very attentive to the needs of the passengers... If you take this trip, make sure to enjoy the hot chocolate and salmon spread with crackers.
Could not have asked for a better experience! Our deckhand, Andrew, was instrumental in making it so as my daughter was on crutches at the time. He went out of his way to ensure she had a wonderful experience despite her lack of mobility.
We were lucky on our tour we not only saw Eagles. But even some humpback whales were near. Win-win! Super informative Captain who is a native Alaskan himself!... they give you some snacks to have love the dip they even gave us the recipe! highly recommend!
The wildlife wasn't in captivity. They showed up on time ....... The area was stunning, the crew was knowledgeable, and we got a sea shanty that wasn't advertised. Excellent tour.
As a local, I love this tour. I have gone on it and learned something new. When family or friends come to town this is the tour I recommend. The Captains are great at their job and the crew they hire are funny and informative.
This is a world winning excursion... The captain and crew truly do have so much passion in their service... We received hot chocolate upon arrival, home made delicious salmon dip and crackers as a snack. We saw at least a dozen bald eagles and overall had an outstanding time. Thank you to Anthony, Marcus & Captain Kyle!

Hundreds Of 5-Star Reviews!
We had such an adventure with True Alaskan Tours on our Tracy Arm Fjord tour. If you are in Juneau, this is a MUST! We had a beautiful, sunny day to see all that nature had to offer! We saw a coastal brown bear, black bear, harbor seals, and humpback whales as we cruised to the fjord! We encountered crystal blue icebergs from the minute we entered the fjord. And then came the view of the glaciers--magnificent! Our world seemed so small as we cruised the fjord. The staff was knowledgeable and shared much interesting facts along the way.
We had a wonderful experience on our Tracy Arm Fjord day trip. The crew were terrific, very friendly and super knowledgeable. We really appreciated the funny and informative comments made by our tour guide Sherrie. Her enthusiasm was infectious. The boat was super comfortable, the bathrooms were clean, and the food was basic but good. The Captain spent some extra time with the humpback whales we encountered on the way down and on the way back. We also saw mountain goats and harbor porpoises. But most of all, the scenery was spectacular.
My husband and I did the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer tour and it is by far the best tour in my life. The crew were super friendly and the places we saw are beyond what words could describe. If there are even more stars I would give them. The Tracy Arm Fjord was the most breathtakingly beautiful place I have ever seen. We were even able to hear the ice cracking down. There were so many ice bergs floating and we even spotted waterfalls. Tracy Arm Fjord is such a delight to the eyes. Must must must do when you are in Juneau.
The sled dog summer camp was one of the favorite shore excursions for my family and me (all 3 of my kids are in their 20s). Chad and Jaime led an excellent tour and we learned so much about the Iditarod! We got to go on a ride led by 12 beautiful Alaskan Huskies. This was such a blast! At the end we got to hold puppies - it was hard to leave them. And their homemade chocolate chip cookies were darn good too. I highly recommend this shore excursion - it was tied with the Hubbard Glacier tour as the top two shore excursions we took from the Holland America line up to Alaska.
