What to know about the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Championship, the last at Victoria National

NEWBURGH, Ind. — This week will mark the final professional golf tournament at Victoria National for the foreseeable future.

The 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance returns to the Evansville area from Thursday to Sunday. It is the 12th year Victoria National has hosted an event on what is now the Korn Ferry Tour. Following a change in 2019, it is also the final stop on the tour's schedule.

In addition to it being the final year at Victoria, the tournament also has a new format. Here is what you need to know for this week's Korn Ferry Tour Championship.

Korn Ferry Tour: Championship will leave Victoria National Golf Club in 2024

Why is it the final tournament at Victoria National?

It was announced in February the tournament would relocate to Pete Dye Course in French Lick starting next year.

There has been a professional golf tournament at Victoria National since 2012. The first seven years were played in the spring or summer under the names United Leasing Championship (2012-15) and United Leasing & Finance Championship (2015-18). The Korn Ferry Tour moved its season-ending tournament to Victoria National the following year.

Dormie Network, the owner of Victoria National in Newburgh, exercised its ability to leave a 10-year contract in its fifth year. The event is locked in at French Lick through at least 2028. Dates won't be set until after this season.

"It just didn’t fit their model," United Leasing & Finance Executive Chairman Ron Romain said in February of Dormie Network's decision. "French Lick was on our radar from the get-go because we knew the caliber of golf course they had. It's important to me that we have some major sporting event (in Southwest Indiana)."

What is the tournament schedule?

The Korn Ferry Tour Championship is Thursday-Sunday. Tee times are scheduled for 7:30-9:45 a.m., split tees in groups of three, with tournament play over at approximately 3 p.m. each day.

The Pro-Ams were on Monday and Tuesday. The Tri-State Varsity Shootout involving area high school golfers was conducted Monday.

How can I watch or purchase tickets?

General admission tickets are available each day for $20 online or at the tournament . Hospitality passes are available through the Korn Ferry Tour Championship website. Children under age 17 are not required to have a ticket for general admission per the website but are required to have a ticket to enter a hospitality area.

Parking will be available at Friedman Park for a $5 donation. No passes or credentials are required.

The first round will have television coverage starting at 1 p.m. CDT via Golf Channel and Peacock. The second and third rounds start at 11 a.m. The final round has coverage on Peacock starting at 11 a.m. and Golf Channel at noon.

What is at stake?

Unlike previous seasons, the championship doesn't have a separate points list. The top 30 through the entire season will earn PGA Tour cards. A handful of spots were already clinched through the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship in Columbus, Ohio, two weeks ago.

The No. 1 player on the season-ending points list earns fully exempt PGA Tour status for the 2024 season and qualifies for the 2024 U.S. Open and The Players Championship. Ben Kohles is currently the top points leader at 1,795. Those ranked from No. 2-30 begin the season in a Korn Ferry Tour graduates category.

Those from 31-60 on the final list earn direct access to the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School. The remainder begin Q-School at the Second Stage unless otherwise exempt via an alternate category. All players who qualified for the Korn Ferry Tour Championship are fully exempt for the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour.

Players to Watch

The field will feature 73 players, as Grayson Murray and Nicholas Lindheim will not compete.

The top six on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List are scheduled to play: Kohles, Chan Kim, Rico Hoey, Ben Silverman, Alejandro Tosti and Pierceson Coody. The latter two are the highest-ranked players on the Official World Golf Rankings with Tosti at 100 and Coody at 106.

Those around the coveted top 30 mark include Chase Seiffert (28), Shad Tuten (29), Jackson Suber (30), Roger Sloan (31) and Wilson Fuff (32).

Upon reasonable request by tour, at tour’s cost and expense, you will sign any documents necessary to effect tour’s ownership and use of all content. No alcoholic beverages may be brought onto or taken from the tournament grounds. Any misconduct, illegal activity, intoxication, use of illegal substance, breaches of etiquette, disruptive behavior, heckling, or violation of any rule or instruction of tournament representatives or violation of this license is prohibited and shall be grounds for forfeiture of your ticket and for your removal from the premises. You shall not seek autographs of players in order to sell such autographs, and you shall not pay another person to obtain an autograph for you. Tickets cannot be resold or otherwise used in a promotion, offered as a prize or reward in a sweepstake or otherwise, or used in a travel or hospitality package (e.G., Combining tickets with flights and/or accommodations) without permission from tour. It is unlawful to reproduce tickets. Host organization and tour reserve the right to revoke any ticket and cancel all privileges connected therein. Further, if you have been issued credentials to access the tournament by tour or the tournament host organization and you are a covered person (as defined below), you are subject to the pga tour integrity program (the “integrity program”). A “covered person” means (i) each person affiliated with a pga tour player, including each caddie, family member, spouse, partner, agent, manager, instructor and trainer, (ii)each employee of the tournament host organization, and (iii) each third party involved in the operation of the competition portion of the tournament. The terms of the integrity program are set forth in the pga tour integrity program manual, which is available here. The integrity program, among other things: prohibits each covered person from betting on any aspect of the tournament and providing inside information to third parties for betting on any aspect of the tournament; and requires each covered person to report any violation of the integrity program to tour. A violation of the integrity program by a covered person may result in the revocation of his or her credentials to access the tournament and other pga tour events, among other consequences. All merchandise sales are final A merchandise voucher may be exchanged for the specified value off the listed price of official merchandise in the merchandise tent at the tournament. The voucher must be presented at the time of the purchase transaction. The voucher will expire upon conclusion of the tournament and be of no further force or effect. No change will be given from exchanging any voucher, and the voucher may not be utilized at any other pga tour event. The voucher cannot be exchanged for cash or credit. Lost, stolen or damaged vouchers are not the responsibility of tour or the tournament and will not be replaced. A voucher will not be accepted if it has been damaged, defaced or spoiled or has been tampered with or altered in any way. The voucher does not provide any warranty or guarantee in connection with the official merchandise purchased at the tournament, and neither the tournament, the sanctioning bodies, sponsors, retailers or vendors, participating players or agents thereof accepts any liability or responsibility whatsoever under any circumstances for any loss, injury or death resulting from any purchase utilizing this voucher. You agree to abide by all rules and regulations established by tour and the tournament in connection with use of the voucher, and a violation of such rules and regulations can be a cause for forfeiture of the voucher. The voucher cannot be used in a promotion or offered as a prize without permission from tour and the tournament. Resale of the voucher is not permitted. It is unlawful to reproduce the voucher. No refunds. Tour reserves the right to revoke the voucher and cancel and/or substitute any and/or all privileges connected therein. Miles Russell, 15, wows with 20th-place finish in first pro start on Korn Ferry Tour

Fifteen-year-old Miles Russell made a hard push up the leaderboard at the Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, rising to as high as tied for third place.

Russell shot a final-round 66 and was 14-under-par for the week at the event at Lakewood National in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. After a bogey on 18 he was tied for 15th as he walked off the course. He finished in a 10-way tie for 20th place.

Russell, who is 15 years, five months and 19 days old, became the youngest player to make the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event after shooting first- and second-round scores of 68 and 66, including a front-nine 31 on Thursday.

The left-handed Russell followed that up with a 70 on Saturday, well within his stated goal of a top 25 in his first professional start (he’s playing on a sponsor exemption). He did far better than that, grabbing an early birdie on the par-4 4th, then going birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie-birdie-par-birdie-birdie over the next eight holes. That’s 6 birdies, one par and one bogey against two par 3s, three par 4s and three par 5s.

With a top-25 finish, Russell is automatically eligible for next week’s Veritex Bank Championship in Arlington, Texas.

Russell and Guan Tian Liang are the only players younger than 16 to make a cut in a PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour event. Russell drew praise from Phil Mickelson on X , the latter giving a fellow left-handed golfer praise for “playing such incredible golf.”

He broke one of Tiger Woods’ records last year, becoming the youngest player to be named the AJGA Player of the Year. Russell, who is from Jacksonville Beach, Fla., is a high school freshman who has also won the Junior PGA and Junior Players Championship events. He shot a 66 at TPC Sawgrass in the latter. Russell said that he began playing golf at age 2 and broke par by age 6.

Russell told reporters Friday that he has a sponsor exemption into the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship in November. In the meantime, he expects to continue to play AJGA events as well as elite amateur tournaments.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin Cup Preview: Atlant vs. Salavat Yulaev

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
