Carnival Cruise Director Accepts Promotion, is Leaving Mardi Gras
Sarah Bretz, Contributor
- January 17, 2022
Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship Mardi Gras only got to host Mike Pack for a short time — the popular cruise director has accepted a promotion within the company.
In a post on his Facebook page , Pack revealed the exciting news. “I am very proud to announce my promotion to Fleet Cruise Director! I am excited to be working alongside another CD in this new role, we will be travelling around the fleet working with our Cruise Directors!”
Pack’s post also included the new cruise director schedule for Mardi Gras through mid-summer. Chris Williams (aka the Flying Scotsman) will soon be returning to the Excel-class vessel and be onboard through mid-March. Williams was the cruise director who launched Mardi Gras in late July 2021, while Pack took time off to spend time with his wife and newborn baby.
Following Williams, Lee Mason will take over the ship, serving as cruise director through mid-July.

Pack also wrote that two other familiar faces would soon be spotted onboard , saying “We have the brilliant Kyndall (Fire) Madgar and Chris (Donkey) Salazar coming to Mardi Gras to experience this amazing ship and how different she is. It is possible you could see them on an XL class ship in the future!”
This means there is a good chance that Kyndall and/or Chris will be among the cruise directors on Carnival Cruise Line’s next ships, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee.
Carnival brand ambassador John Heald noted Mike Pack’s promotion on his own Facebook page , saying “So I would like to add my congratulations to Mike Pack who along with one other Cruise Director has been promoted to Fleet Cruise Director. He will be responsible for working with and assisting all the current group of wonderful Cruise Directors and will help train new CD’s. I am very proud of him.”
Carnival Cruise Line has not yet announced who the other cruise director is that will be serving alongside Pack as co-Fleet Cruise Director.

Norwegian cruise employee arrested for allegedly stabbing multiple people on board
A Norwegian Cruise Line employee was arrested Tuesday after allegedly stabbing multiple people during an Alaska cruise.
Personnel onboard Norwegian Encore saw Ntando Sogoni trying to deploy a lifeboat late on Sunday evening, according to an affidavit signed by Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Matthew B. Judy.
Sogoni, a South African citizen, had joined the ship that day in Seattle.
Ship security officers took him to the medical center for evaluation. When he was taken to an exam room he “became irrational and attempted to leave,” attacking a security guard and a male nurse, the affidavit said.
He then ran to another exam room, grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed a 75-year-old woman there for a medical assessment “several times in the arm, hand, and face.” The woman was a U.S. citizen.
“Security guards intervened and Sogoni stabbed two guards with the scissors before they could subdue and detain him,” the affidavit said. He allegedly stabbed one in the head and the other in the back and shoulder. The injuries were not life threatening.
The attack occurred shortly before 2 a.m. PDT on Monday, according to the document. The ship was west of Vancouver Island and roughly 16.5 miles from land at the time.
Sogoni was held in the ship’s jail until Encore reached Juneau, Alaska, on Tuesday.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Alaska said in a news release that he is charged with assault within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for each count.
An attorney for Sogoni was not listed.
A Norwegian spokesperson told USA TODAY that a "newly employed crew member was observed exhibiting unusual and irrational behavior."
"The ship’s security team escorted the crew member to the medical center for evaluation and assessment, where he became violent without provocation, attacking two other crew members and a guest," the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "The security team quickly detained him, and the onboard medical staff treated those involved for non-life-threatening injuries."
Relevant law enforcement authorities were "immediately" contacted and took custody of the employee upon the ship's arrival in Juneau. "We condemn violent behavior of this nature and are committed to the safety and security of all crew members and guests on our ships," the spokesperson added. "We commend the onboard security team for their brave actions."
Senior ship leadership has been monitoring the situation, and senior company executives traveled to Juneau to meet and help the passenger. "We will continue to assist the relevant authorities in the ongoing investigation," the spokesperson said.
The news comes after a Carnival Cruise Line guest pleaded guilty in February to assaulting a fellow passenger and smashing a glass in their face.

Carnival Cruise Line expected to dock in Baltimore by end of May
N ORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Since the deadly March 26 Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse , the Norfolk Cruise Ship Terminal took in cruise lines that were previously scheduled to use the Port of Baltimore.
Over 46 thousand passengers across 11 cruise ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean, which were supposed to use the Port of Baltimore, docked at the Norfolk Cruise Ship Termina.
Now that explosives are being set to demolish and remove the bridge, one cruise line is expecting to end an upcoming voyage in Baltimore.
Matt Lupoli, Senior Manager of Public Relations with Carnival Cruise Line, said they expect Carnival Pride’s May 19 cruise, set to depart from Norfolk, to finish its voyage in Baltimore. He said they are staying in close contact with local, state and federal officials.
“We are encouraging our guests to register for our complimentary bus service between Baltimore and Norfolk for the sailing’s embarkation,” Lupoli said in a statement.
Executive director of Nauticus Stephen Kirkland told 10 On Your Side taking in the extra traffic did not get in the way of renovations at the terminal. Kirkland also noted the process of bussing the passengers from Baltimore and getting ships rerouted went smoothly.
“We’re winding down, which was always the plan. We want to get Baltimore open just like everyone else does,” Kirkland said. “So we’re thinking about our friends in Baltimore and we told our partners with Carnival, we’d be here as long as they need us.”
10 On Your Side reached out to Royal Caribbean to ask if they also expect to start using the Port of Baltimore soon, but have yet to hear back. Kirkland, however, confirms there are no more Royal Caribbean ships scheduled to dock in Norfolk.
Demolition is supposed to start at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 13, according to Maryland Governor Wes Moore. It was previously set to start on Sunday, but weather issues caused delays.

Elon Musk's Starlink will be used aboard all of Carnival's cruise ships
The cruise company said passengers will now have more reliable wi-fi anywhere in the world.
Elon Musk’s ventures have spanned land and space. Now, he’s going to sea.
Carnival Corporations, the world’s largest cruise company, said in a statement on Tuesday that 100% of its ships across its global fleet now have internet via Starlink, the satellite arm of Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX.
Related Content
The company has more than 90 ships across nine cruise lines that make stops in more than 800 ports around the world, it added.
Carnival Corp. said that guests and crew members will now have a more reliable Wi-Fi source that can be used to share content, scroll through social media, and work remotely “anywhere in the world.”
The added bandwidth will also boost each ship’s operational and communications capabilities, the company said, noting that ships will be able to share real-time data more quickly with other ships and shore members.
Josh Weinstein, Carnival Corp.’s chief executive, said that the company sees the technology as a “win-win-win,” in part because it “provides our guests with more flexibility to stay connected as they’d like on vacation,” while allowing “our crew to stay in touch with friends and loved ones,” and enhancing operational systems onboard.
Meanwhile, in an X post , Musk said of the partnership: “Cool.”
