York Pavilion Hotel, Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western

York Pavilion Hotel, Sure Collection By Best Western

This hotel was fine. It had all the basics you need (although the double bed was just a double, and rather small). Only enough room to swing a small cat, but it was clean and ok. Some of the decor could be improved and updated. Breakfast was fantastic - the best ham and egg ever. Staff were friendly and helpful. All in all, fine but not for a special treat.

The hotel was perfect for what we needed. We didn't spend much time at the hotel but the breakfast was average and staff were friendly. Close to York centre and the station and more reasonable than any other hotel I could find. Wifi didn't reach our room on the top floor but wasn't a problem for us. Rated it very good for value for money!

  • Cleanliness

Me and my friend stayed here for 1 night at the weekend. The staff were very pleasant and friendly. No problems at all. Within a 5 min walk into the city and the train station. Would deffinatly recommend this hotel

We stayed here for one night & found it to be really nice. Staff were very friendly & helpful. We had booked a double as that was the only room available at the time of booking but upon arrival we were informed a twin was available due to a cancellation & they were happy to swap our booking. The room was very clean & tidy with a lovely larger than expected bathroom. The breakfast was nice with a choice of cereals & fruit plus a full English breakfast. The manager was more than happy to save our luggage on the morning of check out while we went shopping as our train was not until mid afternoon. We usually stay at the travel lodge on micklegate but would definitely stay here again. Within easy reach of shops, nightlife & train station & excellent value for money.

Stayed for one night at May bank holiday. Had a courtesy call before we came to let us know about the disruptions due to the Tour de Yorkshire which was a nice touch. We were able to leave our bags before check in. A short walk from the city centre or a bus stop at the end of the road (it poured on Sunday). The room was a nice size, clean and had tea and coffee facilities, tv and toiletries. Big wet room style shower. Bed was slightly rickety but fine. Breakfast was nice with a choice of hot and cold food and plenty of juice, tea and coffee. Over all a nice place to stay and we would go back!

Getting cheap coach tickets to York

As soon as you board your coach to York, you’re already on your way to a trip filled with incredible scenery, history and classically English culture.

Things to do in York

Where to eat.

If you’ve set aside a good budget for a nice meal out, Skosh is the restaurant for you. Quality but informal, Skosh serves up little plates for grazing or a course by course experience for larger dining appetites. It’s an ideal first stop as you take in the York nightlife.

Looking for something more casual? The Block is one of the premier independent pizza places in the city. Catering for everyone from carnivores to veggies and vegans, locals were quickly charmed by The Block’s fresh, street-style pizza, fair prices and friendly atmosphere. Order by the slice, or go all out, it’s your choice!

Penny’s Bespoke Foodhouse

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so ensure you fuel up before exploring the city with a trip to Penny’s. This sweet little cafe and coffeehouse boasts locally sourced produce in order to create some of the city’s finest breakfasts. No matter your order, it all comes at a great price too.

Where to drink

House of Trembling Madness

A staple of York nightlife for locals and visitors alike. This medieval-themed bar offers so many rare German and Belgian beers, it’s become an ale connoisseur’s paradise! Plus, with a shop in-house, you can take a souvenir away too.

The Drawing Board

This bar takes its name from the chalkboard covered walls that house it. Visitors are encouraged to doodle, sketch and scribble to their heart’s content, making each night’s decor entirely unique! For a fun and quirky atmosphere, The Drawing Board ticks all the boxes.

More into spirits? ...In the beverage sense that is. Evil Eye is on the Guinness book of records for most gins available to purchase! Sample a wide range of flavours with your favourite mixers or in speciality cocktails. There are plenty of mocktails for non-drinkers too! Be sure to enjoy your drink of choice on their colourful outdoor terrace for maximum enjoyment.

Top tourist attractions

York Minster Cathedral

Regarded as one of the world’s most incredible cathedrals, you don’t have to be religious to appreciate the majesty and creativity that fills its walls. From the beautiful stained glass windows to the classic stonework, you’re sure to find a sense of peace and tranquility as soon as you arrive.

Clifford’s Tower

See the sights of the city in a way like no other with a trip to Clifford’s Tower. This is almost all of the remnants of the old York Castle, still offering amazing panoramic views of York, and on a clear day, as far as North York Moors! Don’t miss your chance to step inside a true relic of English history.

York Art Gallery

With a constant stream of fantastic exhibitions, events and collections on show, York Art Gallery is the ideal destination for art lovers both big and small. Explore everything from paintings and pottery to ceramic decorations and the impressive automaton clock.

Where to shop

The Shambles

The street said to inspire the infamous Diagon Alley in Harry Potter, The Shambles features a host of unique shops and eateries along its cobbles. Long have the days passed since it was known as the place for locals to buy meat, you can now purchase anything from chocolate to jewellery and more.

Coppergate Shopping Centre

For something a little more contemporary, Coppergate is the modern shopper’s place to be. Home to the biggest names on the highstreet, including some delicious options for a bite to eat, you can easily find something special to treat yourself to.

Independent streets

From Stonegate to Fossgate and beyond, you’ll find a huge amount of hidden gems to keep the keenest of shoppers busy. If you’re willing to venture out far enough you’ll find Bishopthorpe Road (affectionately known as Bishy Road) a former winner of Best Local Parade in the GB High Street Awards. This popular area houses a number of award-winning shops and cafes and even has hosted its own Bishy Road Summer Party in the past.

Things to do for kids

York Dungeon

Part of a group of dungeons throughout the country, York Dungeon is a spooky journey into the city’s murky past. You’ll find yourself on the run from Saxon raiders, hunting for a witch and even taking a look at a few internal organs! Kids will love the over-the-top acting and audience participation.

Jorvik Viking Centre

Discover what life was really like during the Viking Age, from the boats and tools they used to the places they occupied. Kids will find out some amazing facts to share with their friends and see genuine Viking artefacts up close.

Although only available in the summer months, York Maze is worth the well-timed visit. Constructed from over 1 million maize plants, over a plot the size of eight football pitches, the maze is one of the largest in the world! With everything from dinosaurs on the loose to illusions to trick your mind, are you up to the challenge of finding your way out?

York in one day

Enjoy an evening of food & drink

Enjoy a hearty meal on the go with a slice (or two!) of pizza at The Block. Then make your choice from the incredible ales at The House of Trembling Madness, or sample some creative cocktails at Evil Eye.

An ace visit to the Cotswolds, Warwick Castle and Blenheim Palace

Pleasant comfortable journey with very friendly and helpful driver All the visits were fully explained by Andy. We particularly enjoyed the Cotswold villages visit and our visit to Warwick Castle was an absolute winner. The hotel was great. The old part was beautiful . Our room was very clean and comfortable with excellent facilities, including a fridge and fans. We enjoyed the buffet carvery. The hotel staff were all friendly and helpful. It was a really good week.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review; we really appreciate your feedback. Your kind comments are very much appreciated, and we hope to be welcoming you back to Caledonian soon. Kind regards, Rosie

An enjoyable experience

We went on a four day trip to Balmoral Castle and Aberdeenshire. It was easy to book, the trip was well organised and the coach was clean, comfortable and well driven by our driver Mick who kept us informed and entertained throughout the journey. We had heard terrible reports about the hotel in Aberdeen but these proved to be unfounded as our room was clean, comfortable, well equipped although a bit tired and the meals and service were excellent. A very enjoyable trip

Me and my mam were not given our seats…

Me and my mam were not given our seats and separated to opposite ends of bus driver was sarcastic when we said wanted to sit together told its those seat or don't go .Not my idea of a nice weekend sat on your own for around 6hrs with someone who kept making it obvious they did not want me next to them. Also driver relied on sat nav and put wrong destination in so added around 1hrs 30 mins onto journey and he kept answering phone while driving. Some people were late back to bus but because people had sat were they wanted it took some time for him to work out who was missing. The hotel was really nice and food

Thank you for taking the time to post your review; we really appreciate your feedback. It is disappointing to read that not all aspects of your break were to your full satisfaction and enjoyment, and we would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with you. Please would you kindly email us at [email protected] with your feedback, quoting your holiday booking reference number, if possible, please, and one of the team will come back to you. Thank you, Rosie

London excursion …

My booking was made via a telephone call with Brad who was very efficient and helpful. We have not yet traveled on our excursion so I am unable to comment on the full service from Caledonian Travel, hopefully everything will go as smoothly as the booking

We went on the 5 day bus trip to Tenby

We went on the 5 day bus trip to Tenby, Wales and stayed at The Imperial. Really enjoyed this holiday. The hotel although not given a high rating was ideal we thought. The staff were very friendly, helpful and polite. They fixed a problem in the room soon after reporting it. The room was spacious, clean, comfortable and relaxing to be in. The breakfast was lovely - hot, fresh food. The evening meal did not quite match the breakfast, but maybe if i had spoken up, the staff would no doubt have tried to resolve things as they were so attentive. Loved this hotel overall and would definitely stay again. Fantastic situation on the clifftop overlooking the sea. 1 letdown - the trip to Cormarthen - quite run-down in parts and disappointing and would not wish to visit again. Finally, Stuart the bus driver was very friendly and always considering what his passengers wanted - not all bus drivers do this. Thanks Stuart. A great trip overall and very enjoyable. Would recommend. Thanks Caledonian.

Sam was genuinely really helpful and…

Sam was genuinely really helpful and kind. I have often asked other coach tour companies to see if the hotel can offer me a room as a single passenger only for them to rarely get back in touch never mind resolve my request for me. Sam who I spoke to was friendly and efficient and if the holiday lives up to her customer service and values I will be very impressed.

Single travel.

The times I've used Caledonian have been very good, meals excellent accommodation clean and tours well managed. However just now your failing the single traveller with the lack of rooms for them to book into. Its a problem that can only increase as your popularity grows. You charge double rates if we take a double bedroom or you don't have anything to suit. It will mean a lack of single travelling for such as myself. I'm going to Llandudno in September and I've had to take a twin bedded room, not ideal for my single travelling friend. It needs addressing in the future.

Great driver

Great driver , excellent tour ,nice clean bus , hotel food great , rooms a bit dated and needs some tlc . No entertainment but easy to get to newscast by airport bus . just a couple of minor issues but far outweigh by the good points. A really good trip ! Would definitely recommend it . Thanks to all Caledonian staff

Couldn’t ask for more

David was great helping us achieve all our needs, we are a group of pensioners, and getting them all to Hamilton bus station impossible, so David has arranged for us all to be picked up here in our village, which makes it possible to have a day away. Can’t thank him enough.

A stress free booking experience!

A quick phonecall to Caledonian travel,I got booked up AND managed to get my single room with no hassles. Price explained clearly by advisor and, told when balance was due. Completely hassle free and looking forward to my trip.

Great Value for Money

Great Value for Money, the coach was immaculate, the driver was fun and very helpful. Dinner bed and breakfast - couldn’t complain for what we paid. There was no drink service in the restaurant so it was more like a canteen. The stops we had, Port Patrick, Dumfries House and Troon. All lovely , Dumfries house, the Grand Tour and Afternoon Tea was fabulous, would book this 2 day weekend break again.

Banffshire Journey

The driver (Danny)was terrific .He interacted with everyone &got a sense of camaraadie amongst all on the coach from the start .He was very knowledgeable about aspects along our route &shared them with us all .Nothing was a bother or too much trouble well done !!!

Great value short break

I cannot believe the great value of this last holiday ! ! ! We spent four fantastic days in Torquay which in most resorts would have been enough, but left feeling that we should have booked for longer. The hotel - The Torbay - must be the best in the resort. Although only rated as a 3 star, that is stingy. The decor might be a little jaded but the service and facilities are 5 star. The food in the restaurant is good and plentiful (the Cherry Pie is to die for) and the staff, -in the whole hotel, (not just restaurant) are excellent. We're coming back ! ! ! But hopefully next time for longer !)

Nice 5 day break to Arrochar.

Nice 5 day break to Arrochar, lovely hotel, days out enjoyable, slight criticism regarding wait on way home for other coach, over an hour is too much.

London and Harry Potter 2 day break

London and Harry Potter 2 day break The experience was good a few hours in London and the Harry Potter tour was great. However the Holiday Inn at Hamel Hampstead where we stayed overnight was bad. The evening meal was very poor and only water to drink so had to purchase tea and other drinks at bar. The beds in the room were so hard and uncomfortable. For nearly £600 for 3 people sharing a room and taking into account the evening meal where we had to queue for the poor buffet I felt it was poor value for money.

Can’t fault the service provided

Can’t fault the service provided. The driver was helpful and cheerful throughout the journey. The hotel was clean and modern. The food was excellent the only down side was down to my own personal choice is I don’t eat fish or chicken of the bone. You had long enough it every place we went I would do the trip again and recommend it to family and friends

NRA loses New York corruption trial over squandered funds – retired longtime leader Wayne LaPierre must repay millions of dollars

A New York jury found on Feb. 23, 2024, that the National Rifle Association and three of its current and former officials had broken the state’s laws by misusing charitable assets . It also determined that two of the officials should repay the gun group millions of dollars.

The verdict followed a six-week corruption trial that came nearly four years after New York Attorney General Letitia James sued the NRA and almost five years after investigative journalists reported that the group’s leaders, vendors and contractors had improperly spent the nonprofit’s funds on lavish travel and other personal expenses. The NRA responded to the verdict by saying it had been “victimized by certain former vendors and ‘insiders’ who abused the trust placed in them by the Association” and listing steps it had already taken to get its house in order.

The Conversation asked Sarah Webber and Elizabeth Schmidt , experts on nonprofit accountability at the University of Dayton and UMass Amherst, to answer questions about the complicated case.

What does this verdict mean for the defendants?

The jury evaluated evidence regarding the NRA and three individual defendants in the case: Wayne LaPierre , the longtime head of the NRA; its former treasurer and chief financial officer Wilson Phillips; and John Frazer, who is still serving as the group’s corporate secretary and general counsel.

The jury found that all three defendants had violated state nonprofit statutes and breached their fiduciary duties.

It also found that the NRA had ignored whistleblower complaints and retaliated against the whistleblowers, submitted false filings and failed to properly oversee its charitable funds . The NRA was found liable for making false statements in mandatory regulatory filings, as was Frazer.

The jury determined that LaPierre, who announced his retirement days before the trial began and officially stepped down while it was underway, had “violated his statutory obligation to discharge the duties of his position in good faith.”

LaPierre was ordered to repay the NRA US$5.4 million . Because he has already repaid over $1 million following an internal NRA investigation, he will only have to pay back $4.35 million , James announced.

Since the jury said that LaPierre should be removed from his job, from which he had already resigned , it’s possible that he will be barred from ever returning.

Phillips was ordered to pay $2 million back to the NRA . Although the jury did not find that there was enough evidence against Frazer to remove him from his current position as corporate secretary, it did find both Frazer and Phillips had violated their duties as corporate officers of the NRA.

Another defendant, LaPierre’s former chief of staff Joshua Powell, settled the case against him on the eve of the trial and agreed to testify against his former employer, the NRA. Powell must repay the NRA $100,000 and is permanently barred from serving in any fiduciary capacity at charitable organizations in New York state.

What’s wrong with what these NRA leaders did?

The NRA was chartered in 1871 as a nonprofit in New York . It’s therefore subject to that state’s laws .

New York requires three duties of top nonprofit executives , such as the defendants in this case: the duty of care, the duty of loyalty and the duty of obedience. That means they must care for the NRA and its mission, keep the NRA’s interests ahead of their own and obey, or further, the NRA’s mission while obeying the law.

According to the jury, the defendants breached all three duties.

Asking the NRA to pay for lavish personal trips, flights aboard private jets and helicopters, expensive clothes and hair styling and makeup for LaPierre’s wife – all of which came up during the trial – could not be considered fair to the organization.

“In New York, you cannot get away with corruption and greed, no matter how powerful or influential you think you may be,” James posted on X , formerly Twitter. “Everyone, even the NRA and Wayne LaPierre, must play by the same rules.”

Woman with long hair stands at a podium, looking off into the audience.

What will this mean for the NRA?

Charitable downgrades are now likely by rating organizations. For example, Charity Watch has issued a “?” rating for the NRA due to “concerns about this organization” and its “nondisclosure of financial information.”

Repayment by LaPierre and his former colleague will depend on whether or not they file an appeal, and it is unclear whether they can afford to pay the millions of dollars they owe the NRA. LaPierre’s attorneys have indicated that they plan to appeal .

Further, in defending the case, the NRA is likely incurring significant legal fees.

And the NRA relies on dues payments for much of its budget. It has reportedly lost 1 million members out of the estimated 5 million that belonged to it before reports of improper spending patterns arose.

What’s next?

There will be another trial to determine whether any “ non-monetary ” punishment is appropriate for the NRA or the individual defendants, James said.

One key issue the judge will decide is whether independent monitors and experts should review and assess whether the NRA is now spending its money appropriately. The monitor would report to the court on its observations.

The judge could also find that an independent governance expert, which would also report directly to the court, should be appointed. But that person would focus on whether the NRA should reform its procedures and policies related to how the organization spends its money and how the board approves management decisions.

The judge will also rule on whether LaPierre and Phillips should be barred from any future appointments as officers at the NRA or other charitable organizations in New York, and if Frazer will be barred from collecting or requesting donations for any charity operating in New York.
