Tours in Kyoto have been guiding visitors around Kyoto since 1994. Our guides are all longtime residents of Kyoto, bilingual in English and Japanese, and know Kyoto like the back of our hands. We will not only show you the most well-known sights but also the lesser known gems and their unique features.
About Kyoto, Japan
In Japanese, Kyoto was previously known as Kyō, Miyako, or Kyō no Miyako (京の都).
In the 11th century, the city was renamed Kyoto which means "capital city", from the Chinese calligraphic, jingdu. When the city of Edo was renamed to Tokyo which means "Eastern Capital" in 1868, and the seat of the Emperor was moved there, Kyoto was for a short period known as Saikyō "Western Capital". Kyoto is also known as the thousand-year capital.
Located in a valley that forms part of the Yamashiro (or Kyoto) Basin, in the eastern part of the mountainous region known as the Tamba highlands, Kyoto was once the largest city in Japan until it was outgrown by Osaka and Tokyo and remains one of the most beautiful and ancient parts of the country.

I'm Vincent, one of the founders of ToursinKyoto.com and I have lived in Kyoto for over 20 years and fell in love with the place, culture and history so much I decided to make it my home, and began offering tours of this marvellous city with the help of local experts.
Kyoto remains one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited and is full of marvellous people and an abundance of different experiences to enjoy.
We highly recommend Tours in Kyoto. We did so many things in just 1 day - wore Japanese Kimonos, visited Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, the Bamboo Forest, Kinkakuji Temple, Gion, Shomogamo Shrine-and many other places, ate delicious Japanese food, learned some Japanese words like "Oishi", and took many memorable photos at each place. Our guide new the city very well, was skillful at photography, and even introduced a traditional Japanese style hotel with Zen garden where we enjoyed our stay.
Romeo Valdeviezo: Philadelphia, USA
We had a fantastic day in Kyoto thanks to Tours in Kyoto. Even though it was a last minute reservation, they were very quick with all communications and arranging to pick us up at our hotel. Our bilingual Guide, Ken explained clearly the history of Kyoto and each temple and shrine that we visited. This really helped us to appreciate the rich history of Kyoto and how proud Japanese people are of their ancient capital city (we learned it had been the capital for more than 1,000 years).
Maryanne Ramirez: Quezon, Phillipines
As we only had a limited time in Kyoto we booked a tour with Tours in Kyoto, in order to see as much as we could on one of our days. What an incredible day! From the Golden Pavilion to the Imperial Palace, to the massive gate of Heian Jingu Shrine, to Kiyomizu-dera Temple – we experienced so much in a very short timespan – it would have been impossible for us to have done this on our own.
Andrew Parker: Toronto, Canada
Kyoto (s, Kyōto) served as Japan's capital and the emperor 's residence from 794 until 1868 . It is one of the country's ten largest cities with 1.5 million inhabitants and a modern face.
Over the centuries, Kyoto was destroyed by many wars and fires, but due to its exceptional historic value, the city was dropped from the list of target cities for the atomic bomb and escaped destruction during World War II . Countless temples , shrines and other historically priceless structures survive in the city today.

Hi! I'm Koichi. I was born in Osaka, I studied in Kyoto when I was a university student. Now I live in Shiga next to Kyoto. I am a national government licensed tour guide. I have been guiding about 160 groups over the past twelve months. I usually guide my customers mainly in Kansai region including Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Kobe and Shiga by public transportation systems. Well, I am curious about Japanese history, especially the history of Japan's ancient times since I was raised next to the world biggest mausoleum of the ancient Emperor called "Nintoku" in Sakai city Osaka which has just become one of the world cultural heritage sites. I dug out some ancient earthen ware vessels around there when I was a primary school student like the adventure archaeologist “Indiana Jones" (It’s our secret!!). That was my hobby. Now, one of my hobbies is outdoor activities such as mountaineering, kayaking, skiing and others. So I would like to take you to some good places where you can enjoy Japanese unique nature. I love to guide foreign visitors from all over the world. I think it is my calling or heavenly given job. Let's go and enjoy together! I hope to see you soon.
Yoshihisa T.
Hi. my name is yoshihisa. call me "yoshie", please. it means good or o.k. in japanese. i live in joyo city, kyoto prefecture, located just in between kyoto and nara. i was born and raised in iga, mie prefecture. iga is a birthplace of ninja and a renowned haiku poet, matsuo basho. i might be a descendant of ninja. i aim at becoming a linguistic ninja, following a part of basho's lifestyle with the incorporation of seasonal changes into my tours. in addition to visiting famous temples and shrines, i invite you to lesser-known places of historic interest. once in a month i go hiking or mountain climbing with some friends mainly in mountains surrounding kyoto and nara basins. recently i have got intrigued by the charms of buddhist statues, which are manifestations of people's wishes and prayers. i also like izakaya (japanese-style taverns) hopping, tasting delicious dishes and locally brewed sake at reasonable prices. especially i like communicating with people from home and abroad, talking face to face. some of the above-mentioned elements are included in my walking tours. i hope you will discover new aspects of cultural and natural beauty in kansai area through one of my tours which you could never gain otherwise. one of my favorite phrases that come from zen buddhism is ichigo ichie or this meeting-but only once in a lifetime. my interpretation goes this way: this place and this moment never cross again. each and every good encounter, however, lingers on like the sound of a temple bell. won't you explore a deeper world of japanese culture in kyoto, nara and osaka with me .
Hiroyuki T.
Hi i had been working for wakayama prefectural government for 38 years, mainly in the field of cultural heritage management and international relations. i am a national certificated english guide and i have a lot of knowledge and experience in the field of cultural heritage management and international relations. i am very good at cultural heritages. and koyasan and kumano in wakayama prefecture are inscribed in the world heritage list as parts of “sacred sites and pilgrimage routes in the kii mountain range". i was a project manager of "the koyasan and kumano world heritage inscription project” at wakayama prefectural government. i know inside and out of koyasan, kumano, wakayama and other places in the kansai area. i have a lot of experience of guiding as i was also in charge of international relations for a long time at the government. i will be able to provide interpretive guiding service for you around koyasan, wakayama, osaka and other places in the kansai area as i am a cultural heritage management and international relations professional. i am sure you will be able to get deeper understandings on japanese culture and that your trip with me will be memorable one. .
Hello! My name is Tomoe. I'm a national licensed guide interpreter(English). I made my page here, TripleLights in October 2018. Thank you for finding me. I was born and grew up in Otsu,Shiga, which is the next city of Kyoto. I graduated from the university in Kyoto and lived there for four years due to my husband's job. I like history and like to visit temples in Nara. My hobby is to plan trips and have visited many cities and towns in Japan and abroad. One of my favorite places is the AIRPORT!! I have enjoyed meeting and guiding people from abroad, to sightseeing spots in my country. I really want many people from abroad to enjoy visiting many places and have wonderful experiences in my country. I'll be really happy if I can have such experiences with you!! Please tell and ask me if there are any places which you want to visit and anything which you want to do in my country. I'll plan the trip only for you. I am cheerful and always positive. I like to talk with people. I would like to talk with many people from many countries. Please tell me about your country, too!! I'm looking forward to seeing you!! * If you want, I will take you back to your hotel (within the time or with the extra hourly rate) Or, I will show you how to go back to your hotel when we finish the tour. * If you want, I will give you some advice about what to and where to eat your lunch/dinner.
New kyoto tour guides.
Masayuki I.
My name is masayuki currently living in kyoto. everyone casually calls me massy. i grew up in a bilingual ( english / japanese ) background. i am a new entry in here, but i am already very well experienced in hosting and guiding. i like to explore things to discover all the hidden beauties and treasures off the beaten path and share with others. i would only show you to the places you really need a guide with no information in english. if you are interested in things truly unique known only to some locals, i am the one. i like to explore in nature and show my footsteps to everyone to discover new hidden ground. it is almost my natural instinct to avoid crowd. i am not into ordinary tourism of kyoto because i don't want to be another one of them doing the same guide in kyoto. i want to show you to a true state of sacred and beauty which is unharmed by commercialization and over-tourism. my itinerary cuts off overrated attractions from the view point of a local. in kyoto i mostly write about places never been introduced in english. i am not a licensed tour guide interpreter, but i have different field of knowledge to introduce things. i am more of an english-hosting guide without strict business manner. i am a professional in writing introduction pages mainly for north parts of kyoto in english. the courses are my own creation since i am the original one to write in english. i am a very open and friendly person who can communicate in english nearly as good as a native speaker. i was in canada and u.s. i once took a leading role of an international community as well as being an english teacher. my wife is from ukraine often assisting me to host my guests. .
Kazuyoshi M.
I am a guide working mainly in osaka and kyoto. i can provide travel guidance to places where foreigners do not usually go. i can also guide you to places popular among foreigners if you want to visit them. i have lived in osaka for 7 years, so i am a specialist in sightseeing in osaka. i can also guide sightseeing in kyoto, as it is my favorite city to visit. i look forward to having an enjoyable trip with you. .
Experience the essence of Kyoto and its captivating culture on my essential walking tour. Immerse yourself in the heart of this beautiful city and gain a profound understanding of its rich heritage. I'm a licensed National Tour Conductor with 26 years living in Japan.
Hello I'm Minori. Kyoto is a popular destination so you might look for deeper place of it. My area is Yamashina, where you pass when traveling Shiga. It has beautiful mountains and water, also its temples and shrines are less crowded. It's a good place for those who have visited famous sites already. I used to work at travel agency so I had chances to company a group tour with a guide and it was an amazing experience that I could see people actually having a fun. I also worked in a hotel and learned how important hospitality is to make guests feel comfortable. I teach kids English so I would like to show them how rewarding and proud it is to show people around our beautiful countries, and English would be helpful in many ways. Let’s go and see beautiful Kyoto and experience some of the best attractions here with me!

The Unique Architecture and Culture in Higashiyama
“ A personalised tour and wonderful experience ”
My friend and I had a wonderful tour with Atsuko in Kyoto! Atsuko personalised the tour for us and provided seamless communication and organisation beforehand. Atsuko helped us fit the highlights into 5 hours - we covered a lot of ground and saw some amazing sites. Atsuko's historical and local knowledge were greatly appreciated. We travelled by bus with ease (a transport card/pass or cash is needed). Highly recommend!
Hello Ms. Emily and Taylor, Thank you for your kind review and comment for me. I really enjoyed the tour with you in Kyoto. It was fun to talk with you and visit Kyoto. You are very interested in Japanese culture and history. I was very happy to show them to you. Thank you for joining my tour. Best regards, Atsuko

Kyoto Golden Route (Nijo Arashiyama Kinkakuji Fushimi Inari)
“ A whistle-stop tour of Kyoto and beyond ”
Hideo was a fit man for his age! Meeting us at the port of Osaka and guiding us towards Kyoto on public transport to see the bamboo forest, torri gates, golden pavilion and other significant temples/shrines. With three children, my wife and I loved the walking, sightseeing, stories and food options.
I'm very glad to receive your excellent review. We could see beautiful flowers (wisteria, azalea) in the Tenryuji Temple. And the more we could enjoy visiting Kinkakuji Temple and Fushimi-Inari Taisha. I wish you and all your family good health and happiness.
Half Day Kyoto highlights tour plus optional Maiko dinner
“ Very pleasant afternoon with a knowledgable guide ”
We spent a lovely afternoon with Rick in Kyoto. We took the golden tour and Rick guided us through the golden pavilion, Nijo Castle and Gion. Along the way he told us interesting facts and took us to places in Gion we wouldn’t have seen if we had been on our own. We learned a lot about Geikos and Maikos. Rick’s knowledge about Kyoto is excellent and his command of English is good. We would highly recommend Rick as guide.
Dear Esther, Thank you very much for the nice review! I'm so glad that both of you are interested in Kyoto very much and we had nice conversation during the tour. It was my pleasure replying your questions and guiding you to the best recommended places. I hope Kyoto will be your nice memory and you will come back to this city sometime in future. Best regards, Rick

Trip within a Trip: Osaka and Kyoto, Japan
May 1, 2024 • 9 min read
Make your next trip to Japan even better by adding on four days in exciting Osaka (pictured) and Kyoto © EarnestTse / Shutterstock
Senior Director of Content Laura Motta recently spent 10 days in Japan . To make the most of her time in the country, she included a four-day mini-excursion to Osaka and Kyoto – a trip within a trip, if you will, which anyone can replicate.
Everyone goes to Tokyo , and I would never tell you to skip it. But another critical part of any Japan itinerary is that magical Shinkansen (bullet train) ride south to Osaka , and the astounding sites that await beyond. A mind-boggling pair of cities – Osaka and Kyoto – are crammed with more shrines and temples, steel-and-glass skyscraper malls, scenic vistas and world-class restaurants than you can experience in a month, never mind in just a few days. This was my third trip to Japan and my second time visiting Osaka and Kyoto.
Before I get to my recommendations, here are a few practical tips:
- When to arrive: Arriving in Osaka around midday lets you drop your bags at the hotel, rest and then hit Dōtonbori in the evening, when its famous neon lights are ablaze.
- Getting there from the airport: The spotless, inexpensive airport limousine bus from Kansai Airport makes eight stops in Osaka, which include all of its main train stations.
- Getting around: Japan is world-famous for the ease and comprehensiveness of its public transit for a reason. You can – and certainly should – do this route without a car. High-speed (more expensive/faster) and local (less expensive/slower) trains cover every inch of this region and will shuttle you quickly between Kyoto and Osaka. Both cities have easy-to-use subway systems.
- What to pack: Certainly, your walking shoes and room in your stomach for a lot of ramen. Keep in mind that Japan has four distinct seasons and temperatures vary significantly between them. Check the weather ahead of time – and pack accordingly.
- How to structure your days: It’s tempting to cram your schedule when there are so many things to see. Yet realistically, you won’t be able to do more than two major sites – maybe three, if you’re really going for it – in a single day. This is especially true in Kyoto, where the best sites are far apart and can require up to an hour of travel to reach.
- Take it easy: Don’t forget to eat, hydrate, rest and wander. And tell yourself you’ll be back.
Day 1: Osaka
Snack time .
You’ve been traveling all morning. It’s time to eat. (Unless, of course, you stuffed yourself en route on the amazing bento boxes you can get at Tokyo Station.) Keep it simple like I did and grab onigiri (rice balls) or a sando at 7-Eleven. There’s one on every corner, you’ll only spend a few dollars, and buying local snacks – especially in Japan – is among travel’s greatest joys.
See the neon
If you’re in Osaka, go see the Glico man. It's a rule. Or maybe it's just mine. This famous animated sign of a runner, arms raised, about to cross the finish line in some hypothetical marathon in the sky, remains delightful despite the tourist crush on the streets below. This ad for the Glico candy company (candy bars give you energy – get it?) has become an informal mascot of Dotonbori , Osaka’s dining and nightlife district. After dark, it’s fun to wander here through the area’s many arcades, claw-machine and pachinko parlors, and shops. If you start here on a weeknight, it’s delightfully quiet.
Insider tip: Arrive before sunset and duck into a tiny side street to Hōzen-ji , a small temple known for its moss-covered statues. I was there when they were lighting the lanterns for the evening – a dreamy experience indeed.
Have a cheap and cheerful dinner
Dotonbori is teeming with restaurants. You can’t miss the distinctive signage advertising takoyaki (grilled octopus balls), gyoza and crab. My favorite takoyaki stand, Takoyaki Yoriyabunzaemon , is humble compared to its bombastic neighbors; there is no 5ft marquee. Inside, you’ll sit on a well-worn barstool while the single cook pours takoyaki batter into the famous round molds and serves it to you still piping hot, and slathered in mayo, barbecue sauce and bonito flakes. A warning: if you value the skin on the roof of your mouth, do not eat too fast here.
Day 2: Kyoto
Bullet train .
The Shinkansen train between Osaka and Kyoto is cheap and lightning fast. This trip is included in many Japanese rail passes , but if you’re paying for a standalone ticket, you’ll pay 1420 yen (about US$10). The trip takes 15 minutes, so slower local trains hardly seem worth the mildly cheaper price. Arrive midday and head to your hotel to check in and drop your luggage. Before you depart, don’t forget to look around Kyoto Station for the eki ink stamp, which you can imprint into a notebook as a souvenir. Every train station in Japan has a uniquely designed stamp, even if you sometimes have to ask the attendant at smaller stations where to find it.
Stay in style
If there’s one place to splurge on a fabulous hotel in Japan, it’s in Kyoto. Whether you’re strolling under vibrant fall leaves or spring cherry blossoms, or wandering the narrow alleys and stepped streets of the Gion district , Kyoto is romantic, its temples and shrines otherworldly. My choice was Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto , a new luxury property that blends smart contemporary design with traditional Japanese accents. Beside its excellent restaurant – more on that below – the highlight is the hotel's updated approach to the traditional onsen, called Thermal Spring. This vast, moodily lit indoor space offers heated pools and loungers amid beautiful rock formations and water features. And unlike many onsen experiences, this one is a bathing-suits-required, mixed-gender space where everyone can hang out. There is also no surcharge for entry.
Visit the temples
My boyfriend cheekily refers to Fushimi Inari Taisha , Kyoto’s famous shrine with its rows and rows of vermillion gates ascending a dramatic hillside, as “the Instagram shrine.” It’s hard to say that he’s wrong: the site is a favorite among foreign travelers for good reason. The gates are simply gorgeous and – yes – photogenic. Just don’t expect to find yourself there alone.
Insider tip: Afterward, stop at the charming Vermillion Cafe for a sweet snack and coffee. Sit on the back porch, which overlooks a lovely stretch of forest, for especially serene vibes (spectacular in autumn).
If you still have energy left in the afternoon, head to Nishi Hongan-ji , a mammoth Buddhist temple complex that’s home to some of the largest wooden structures in Japan. After you marvel at the huge lanterns and expansive halls, stop by the brightly painted Chinese Gate, which dates back to the late 1500s. This temple is also within walking distance of Kyoto Station, and can be a good place to start or end your trip.
Day 3: Kyoto
Go for the gold.
Kinkaku-Ji , sometimes called the Golden Pavilion, is among Kyoto’s (and Japan’s) most famous and photographed landmarks. This UNESCO World Heritage site , where a brilliant gold temple appears to float along the shores of a serene lake, is well worth braving the crowds for, especially in sunny weather when the reflection of the lake glints off of the temple’s exterior walls. Go early, packing your patience – and you’ll understand instantly why so many people flock here.
School Bus Coffee Stop is a charming spot for an easy, affordable breakfast or lunch in cozy, industrial-farmhouse-style surroundings. Comforting selections like bagel sandwiches and avocado toast are accompanied by the shop’s excellent, house-roasted coffee.
Modern love
For an aesthetic palate cleanser after a quick lunch, stop by the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art , which houses rotating exhibits, often of contemporary and modern art, in a fantastic brick structure that dates to the 1930s.
Taste sensation
And you’d be remiss if you stayed at the Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto without eating at its elegantly flamboyant Italian restaurant, Forni . Yes, there are pizzas and pastas on its à la carte menu. But I’d highly recommend the tasting dinner, where impeccably composed dishes like sea bream citrus tartare and grilled wagyu arrive on geometric plates and stands. It’s a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.
Day 4: Osaka
Smart hotel.
After going luxe in Kyoto on meals and lodging, I came back to Osaka looking to save money without sacrificing too much comfort. I wasn’t ready to sleep in a sarcophagus-sized pod or get every meal at 7-Eleven. (Well, not every meal – just a few.) After getting off the train from Kyoto at the massive Shin-Osaka Station, I took the easy-to-use metro to one of the best places I’ve stayed in Japan, the chicly designed, austere-but-comfortable Hotel Noum , just across the river from Temmabashi Station. The location made transportation connections easy and kept me sheltered from the stark urban rush of Umeda, Osaka’s high-rise business district. Rooms are small, comfortable and spotless; mine had a river view. The hotel also has an airy coffee shop in its lobby that attracts as many locals as travelers. I popped in here for a breakfast pastry and a latte and was ready to start the day.
Window(less) shopping
Even if you don’t stay in Umeda, visiting the neighborhood is a must. Spend a day wandering its cavernous, endless indoor shopping malls and underground food courts. You may never see daylight, but you will find everything from Hermès bags to the best 300-yen (US$2) gyoza you’ve ever tasted. I like to check in on the enormous red whale, which hangs suspended from the atrium of the Hep Five department store, which also happens to have a ferris wheel on its roof.
Enjoy a messy lunch
Train stations are where you’ll find some of the best food in Japan – and Osaka’s sprawling Umeda Station is no exception. My favorite train-station ramen is at Menya Takei, located behind the entry gates for the Hankyu Railway. Menya Takei specializes in tsukemen , in which the ramen noodles and broth are served separately. Dip the noodles into the broth to eat – yes, you’ll undoubtedly get it all over your clothes, but that’s part of the fun. Lots of laundry to do when you return home is a sure sign of a great trip.
Insider tip : Ask the gate agent to let you through. They’ll make you pay for a rail ticket on the way in, and then may refund you on the way out.
From Osaka, hop back onboard the Shinkansen for more exploring in Japan, or do what I did and catch a quick, affordable domestic flight to Tokyo’s Haneda airport to connect to your flight home.

A Foodie’s Guide to Kyoto, Japan
I f you’re a true food-lover, you likely have Japan pinned to the top of your travel wish list. Foodies flock to Japan, known as one of the top culinary destinations in the world, to taste the freshest and highest-quality ingredients, sushi and diverse regional cuisines. And while the first Japanese city that usually comes to mind is Tokyo, there’s another spot that’s just a quick bullet train ride away that shouldn’t be missed: Kyoto.
What makes it so enticing? Kyoto’s food scene places a huge emphasis on seasonality, unique regional specialties, rich culinary traditions and even the opportunity to experience traditional Japanese dining called kaiseki, which consists of multiple courses of precise dishes. Better yet, the city doesn’t just consist of eating: there are temples, lantern-lit alleys, markets, bamboo forests and monkeys to add to your itinerary, too.
Whether you’re interested in upscale Michelin-starred dining or exploring Kyoto’s street food and local delicacies, this city is guaranteed to take your taste buds on a trip. Keep reading for the ultimate guide on where to eat, drink, sleep and explore while in Kyoto.
How to Get There
To get to Kyoto from the United States, you’ll need to fly into one of Japan’s major international airports, such as Narita International Airport (NRT) or Haneda Airport (HND). Several U.S. airports — like Newark (EWR), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) — fly directly into Tokyo. From there, you can either travel to Kyoto by domestic flight or train. From Tokyo Station, you can transfer to a shinkansen (bullet train) bound for Kyoto. The entire journey takes approximately three hours.
Pro tip: for the true foodie experience, fly with United and upgrade to Polaris Business Class for in-flight sundae carts and free-flowing Champagne. Being that the flight is around 14 hours nonstop, sitting in Polaris is a game-changer, allowing you to rest peacefully and be ready to explore as soon as you hop off the plane.
Where to Eat and Drink
Local Delicacies: Nishiki Market
No trip to Kyoto is complete without wandering through the bustling Nishiki Market . The open-air market opened 400 years ago, but today it continues to thrive for locals and visitors seeking a taste of the community’s authentic food culture. Being that there are hundreds of stalls and shops, I spent hours at this market, trying everything from Japanese sweets, to Kobe beef skewers, to noodles. Some of the best foods to try at Nishiki Market include tako tamago (small baby octopus), mochi, goma dango (sesame dumplings), satsuma age (fish cakes), senbei (seasoned rice crackers) and tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette).
Omakase : Sushi Gion Matsudaya
My favorite dining experience during my entire trip to Japan was at Sushi Gion Matsudaya , a six-seat, reservation-only sushi restaurant tucked in a quiet alley in Gion. While it’s on the expensive side (around $200 per person), it’s a Michelin-star establishment where Chef Matsudaya personally handpicks fresh and seasonal ingredients to create that day’s menu. The intimate and exclusive atmosphere, mixed with melt-in-your-mouth sushi and sake pairings, is well worth the splurge.
Tempura: Komefuku Shijo Karasuma
Fresh tempura in Japan is an absolute must. For the best in town, grab a seat at Komefuku Shijo Karasuma (walk-ins or reservations welcome) where you can feast on tempura and seafood dishes in a cozy, wood-lined izakaya with both counter and table seating. Once you’ve sipped on some sake, order the assortment of tempura, which includes shrimp, crab, sweet potato and more. Make sure to order a few pieces of the sushi, too.
Ramen: Kyo Tsukemen Tsurukame
Right around the corner from the Nishiki Market, we stumbled upon Kyo Tsuke-men Tsurukame , a tiny hole-in-the-wall ramen shop with only eight seats and happy customers walking out, so naturally we waited in line. I ordered the tanten miso and chili oil ramen dish and it was, for lack of a less dramatic term, life-changing. The flavors were rich and the broth was thick. The chef adds ingredients and toppings you won’t find in typical noodle dishes, making it a unique ramen experience. It’s a hidden gem that will leave you full and wanting more.
Gyoza: MOTOÏ
Every culture has their own version of a dumpling, and in Japan it’s the gyoza. If you’re craving them, MOTOÏ is a restaurant that should be on your list. Run by a French-trained chef, MOTOÏ infuses French and Kyoto cuisine in a trendy setting. We walked in without a reservation and sat right at the bar. The restaurant is known for its signature papa gyoza, made with shrimp, ginger and coriander.
Wagyu Sandwich: Hafuu
You’ll be eating a lot of seafood and sushi while in Kyoto, so a much-needed break for meat may be desired. Gyukatsusando is a Wagyu katsu sandwich that’s popular in the region, and the best place to get it with the highest-quality meat is Hafuu . Hafuu has plenty of ways to indulge in their infamous beef, but the most popular is the sandwiches, which come with a special sauce and cabbage. Visitors can even take them to-go and eat outside overlooking the Imperial Palace. For more affordable options, enjoy Hafuu lunch time.
Okonomiyaki: Yasubei
In Pontocho district, you’ll find Yasubei , a family-run restaurant serving okonomiyaki, a traditional teppanyaki dish; it’s essentially a savory pancake cooked on a teppan grill in front of you. We were able to add ingredients like cabbage, meat or seafood, and garnishes like okonomiyaki sauce, aonori seaweed flakes, katsuobushi bonito flakes, Japanese-style mayonnaise and pickled ginger. You’ll likely have to wait in line, so prepare for that.
Why the Japanese Robata Crushes the Stuffy Hotel Steakhouse
Plus, where to go.
Soba Noodles: Arashiyama Yoshimura
For stunning riverside views combined with fresh noodle dishes, Arashiyama Yoshimura is a must-try traditional soba house. I was fortunate enough to score a seat directly next to the window, so I slurped down noodles while overlooking the river and mountains. The restaurant serves fresh hand-made buckwheat soba noodles (both hot and cold) and seasonal dishes with simple and quick service. Be ready to wait outside, as they do not take reservations.
Fluffy Souffle Pancakes: A Happy Pancake
Stop by A Happy Pancake for an over-the-top brunch filled with the fluffiest pancakes you’ll ever eat. The menu is filled with both sweet and savory pancake options, including strawberry shortcake, matcha, tea milk and hojicha tiramisu. They taste like light clouds and were the perfect start to the day.
Pro tip: The earlier you get there (like before they open), the less likely you’ll have to wait in like.
Drinks: Bees Knees
Consistently named as one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars, Bee’s Knees in the Kiyamachi district gives prohibition-era speakeasy vibes. It’s hard to spot, as you have to find the yellow door with a sign for “The Book Store.” But as soon as you step inside, ‘90s hip-hop music is bumping and the drinks are flowing. There’s a solid list of cocktails to choose from, including Negronis with hoji tea and coffee bitters, and the Ninja Smashes with yuzu, passion fruit, lemon, shiso leaf and sparkling sake.
Where to Stay
For Authentic Japanese Hospitality: HOSHINOYA Kyoto
Located in Arashiyama, HOSHINOYA Kyoto is a remote, modern, ryokan-style retreat along the Katsura River that delivers pure serenity. The luxury five-star property is completely secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city, so much so that you take a boat to get there. Traditional rooms are designed with tatami floors, futons and chabudai dining tables, some with lounges and balconies. The best part? It’s perfect for foodies because of the chef’s high-end cuisine and unique floating tea room. The highlights of my stay at HOSHINOYA Kyoto were the romantic Hisui boat ride where we drank tea while taking in the mesmerizing views, and waking up to a hearty hot-pot in-room breakfast with fresh, seasonal vegetables cooked in hot broth.
For Wellness-Focused Luxury: Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto
Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto embodies a fresh approach to wellbeing through simplistic design and amenities that recharge. The 25-room boutique hotel opened in June 2022 and is located right in front of Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site first built in 1603 during the Tokugawa Shogunate. The hotel’s restaurant, Singular, blends an innovative approach with gastronomy inspired by classic French techniques. The chef personally sources ingredients directly from producers in Kyoto and all over Japan. The hotel offers personalized experiences like Ayurvedic menus, forest meditation, in-room sound baths, self-training fitness and yoga programs through in-room digital tablets, and a unique pillow menu with health benefits.
All of that eating must be balanced out with experiencing the city’s best sites and neighborhoods. Visiting Kyoto’s Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is an otherworldly experience, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of towering bamboo groves. A few steps away from the forest, visitors love the Monkey Park Iwatayama where you can interact, feed and observe monkeys in their natural habitat.
You can’t miss the temples scattered around the entire city, but especially the five-story Yasaka Pagoda, Hokan-Ji , Adashino Nenbutsuji and Kiyomizu-dera . Spend a few hours walking through the Fushimi Inari Shrine , which is a popular photo op with thousands of vermilion torii gates. After walking through the entire trail, you will find yourself in the forest of the sacred Mount Inari.
Lastly, two districts you’ll want to visit are the Pontocho Alley at night, filled with restaurants in the lantern-lit Gion alleys (you may even pass a Geisha) and the Gion Higashiyama ward during the day, home to two of Kyoto’s most attractive streets. Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka are a pair of gently sloping lanes with classic architecture, shops and temples.

Mother-daughter adventures: Slow travel through Kyoto and Tokyo
Florence Ang
TOKYO – Standing in the heart of Tokyo’s bustling Roppongi entertainment district, I sensed my mother’s fatigue from sightseeing. Intuitively, I diverted our path to visit Roppongi Catholic Church, an English-language Roman Catholic parish.
I had anticipated my mother’s preference for quiet moments in places of worship, but did not expect that this spontaneous decision would result in the most cherished memory of our holiday, when she thanked me for the detour.

Bullet train. The Shinkansen train between Osaka and Kyoto is cheap and lightning fast. This trip is included in many Japanese rail passes, but if you're paying for a standalone ticket, you'll pay 1420 yen (about US$10). The trip takes 15 minutes, so slower local trains hardly seem worth the mildly cheaper price.
