Brits Killed In Turkish Jeep Safari Named
Two British holidaymakers who died in a jeep safari accident are named by the authorities in Turkey.
Monday 23 June 2014 19:04, UK
The Turkish tourist ministry has confirmed that Britons Alison May Conroy and Valerie Ann Olton died in the accident in Seydikemer in Fethiye province.
Two other Britons were injured and remain in hospital following the accident in the south west of the country, the ministry said.
Three Turkish nationals, including the driver, were also said to have been injured.
Local reports suggested the open-top Land Rover crashed into a telegraph pole near the village of Korubuk as it returned to a resort.
The group had reportedly been to Saklikent Gorge, about 25 miles from the popular resort of Fethiye.
The gorge is 1,000ft deep and 12 miles long, making it one of the longest and deepest in the world.
Jeep safaris are a popular expedition for tourists staying in the main resorts of southwest Turkey and offer a chance to see the countryside beyond the beach.

Horror crash leaves Brit fighting for life and 15 injured as Turkey tourist buses collide
The 11 injured Brits include a 53-year-old man, who is in a life-threatening condition, Turkish media reports following the crash which happened in the Manavgat district of Antalya
- 07:34, 3 May 2024
Eleven Brits have been injured in a horror crash between tourist minibuses in Turkey .
One of the semi-open vehicles smashed into the back of the other bus in the Manavgat district of Antalya, witnesses say. It is believed it then swerved off the road and overturned - causing passengers to be thrown from the vehicle.
One of those injured, a 53-year-old British man, is in a life-threatening condition, Turkish media reports. Fifteen people, including one Irish tourist, have been hurt in the collision in total.
Several victims were given first aid at the scene, before being taken to nearby hospitals , it is understood. Images of the aftermath show injured people lying on the floor and being treated, while others were seen sitting with blankets around their shoulders. A bright pink overturned safari bus is seen left at the side of the road in some photos.
Several companies offer trips in the region to tourists wanting to see the surrounding countryside and other cultural sights. The Manavgat district is particularly popular with tourists, and the city of Manavgat, on the coastline, is a bustling city with plenty to offer visitors.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are providing consular support to a number of British nationals following an incident in Turkey, and are in contact with the local authorities."
Last month, a man died and seven other people - including two children - were hurt after a pylon supporting cable cars collapsed in Turkey. Memiş Gümüş, 54, was killed in the tragedy, which happened just outside the Turkish resort city of Antalya. Six Turkish citizens and one Kyrgyz national were injured, authorities had said.
It is thought Memiş was from Turkey and had fallen into a rocky ravine after the connecting pole fell "for an undetermined reason". Two children are among the other seven injured in the horror at the Tunektepe cable car, popular with tourists.
Photographs in Turkish media showed the battered car swaying from dislodged cables on the side of the rocky mountain as medics tended the wounded. Helicopters equipped with night vision were called in to rescue 184 people left stranded in the cable car system's cabins after the horror unfolded, Antalya mayor Muhittin Böcek said in a statement.

Watch Two Rhinos Charge a Safari Jeep, Causing a Serious Rollover Crash
Seven tourists were injured in the recent incident at Jaldapara National Park
By Sage Marshall | Published Feb 27, 2023 6:00 PM EST
- Conservation
Some wild animals can turn the tables on you in a split second . That’s what two rhinos did to a group of tourists on a recent outing in India. According to India Today NE , the tourists were on a safari in Jaldapara National Park in North Bengal on February 25 when they spotted two rhinoceroses fighting in the bushes next to the dirt road. The tourists watched and filmed the critters—until the rhinos shifted their focus.
A video posted on Twitter by Akash Deep Badhawan shows the intense series of events that followed. The rhinos emerge out of the bushes—running full-tilt at one of the safari jeeps. The video was recorded by someone in a second jeep. The drivers of both jeeps shift into reverse and hit the gas. But the rhinos—despite being pretty damn bulky—show impressive speed. One of the rhinos appears to hit, or at least come really close to the front jeep, which then tilts off the side of the road and rolls over in a scary crash.

Seven tourists were injured in the incident. Two of them were seriously injured and were transferred to a district hospital from a local medical center. According to India Today NE , local forest service officials say that until now, there have never been reports of rhinoceroses charging at a tourist vehicle in the area.
The greater one-horned rhino, or Indian rhino, was once widespread across India, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The species’ population plummeted by the early 1900s but has since somewhat recovered. There are currently around 3,700 rhinos in northeastern India and parts of Nepal. According to the WWF, greater one-horned rhinos “reportedly kill several people each year in India and Nepal.”

“Fortunately, no one has been killed,” said Kamal Gazi, who was driving the jeep in the recent incident. He suffered minor injuries. “Things could have been worse.

Father and daughter killed in holiday safari crash in Turkey
A British man and his eight-year-old daughter have died in a crash in Turkey after the driver of their vehicle reportedly had water squirted into his eyes and lost control of the vehicle.
Jonathan Pearce, 38, and his daughter Charley, from the West Midlands, were on a First Choice holiday with six other members of their family, who were all travelling in the same open topped 4x4 when it crashed into a tractor. Pearce's eight-year-old nephew, Joseph, was said to be in a critical but stable condition after Monday's crash.
The 4x4 was in a convoy of four vehicles that were taking part in a safari, organised by a local company, Sarigerme Tours. They were returning the tourists to their holiday village in Sarigerme, on the south-west coast of Turkey, when the accident happened.
The holidaymakers had been having water pistol fights between the vehicles but the crash happened when another passing tourist joined in, according to others travelling in the convoy.
One eyewitness, who asked not to be named, told a local news agency: "It was dreadful, really dreadful. One minute they were all laughing and squirting each other with water pistols. It was a long straight stretch of road and the tractor had broken down at the side.
"We didn't see it happen but we were told that the driver, a young lad, was squirted with water, which temporarily blinded him. He saw the tractor too late and swerved to avoid it but as he swerved the back of the jeep took the full impact of the crash. They were standing up in the jeep having a whale of a time. When they hit the tractor I saw them being flung out into the road "
The eyewitness said no one in the 4x4 had been wearing a seatbelt. The other vehicles reversed back and people tried to help the victims. They covered up Charley because she was "obviously dead".
The injured were taken to the Yucelen hospital, in Mugla, an hour away, where father-of two Pearce, whose wife Joanne was also in the 4x4, died of his injuries.
Of the 10 passengers in the vehicle, eight were from the Pearce family. Charley's uncle, Joseph Pearce, and her cousin Stephan, six, were treated for cuts, bruises and shock before being released. Another British man, Chan Singh, who had been in the same vehicle with his wife, was also taken to hospital, although the Foreign Office in London said he had suffered only minor injuries.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman said she understood that the driver of the 4x4 vehicle had been detained. Police at the nearby station of Ortaca confirmed they were looking for a German motorbike tourist who had allegedly thrown water at the vehicle.
A spokesman for Sarigerme Tours said staff were "very, very sad" at the tragic accident and that the company had never had an accident previously in five years of running 4x4 safaris.
"Four jeeps went out on the safari. Three of them had passed the broken down tractor. But as the fourth jeep came down the road a German motorbike tourist thought he'd join in the fun and threw water at the jeep.
"It hit the driver in the face and temporarily blinded him. He swerved to avoid the tractor but the back of our vehicle hit the [tractor's] trailer and the passengers were thrown out."
A relative in the West Midlands, who did not wish to be identified, said the rest of the family had only found about the accident yesterday and were completely distraught. "It is all too soon and still raw at the moment to say anything else."
A First Choice spokeswoman said it was "a deeply sad time" and the company wished to express its heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of those killed. She said resort staff were offering support and assistance to the rest of the family and emphasised that the safari organiser was not affiliated to First Choice.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that two British nationals died and seven were injured in a road traffic accident whilst on a jeep safari in Turkey yesterday."
She added that the family were receiving consular advice.

The video is extremely graphic. Turkish tv news footage of accidents does tend to be far more explicit than here in the UK. I notice that quite a number of the FB groups have already said they won't share the clip because it is so graphic, which is a good thing.

The best day of our holiday!
The Marmaris jeep safari was honestly the best part of our holiday to Turkey this summer. Extremely good fun from7 to 77 and great value for money. Marmaris Travel is the best safari company in town and they are brilliant. The safari takes up full day day, but is well worth it. They picked us up from our hotel with some other guests and then taken from an introduction chat with the other jeeps. The guys in the team are very friendly, great with their English skills and informative. The safari tour involves driving through villages with the mountain scenery around you will stop at the waterfall, Jesus beach, lunch, local villages. Some little tips that will help you: take a towel and sunglasses for the dirt track - you will get wet and a little muddy! Also, take a camera, but (don't forget to protect it from water and mud) if you want as there are so many photo opportunities. There's a photographer taking photos of you the entire safari tour and you can buy all your pictures and videos on a CD. I would highly recommend Marmaris Jeep Safari to anyone staying in the town, whether it's couples, families or groups of friends.

Loads of fun
There no animals on this safari tour but the water fight can bring out some competitivenessIt was the best fun ever! They stop off for waterfall which is really good and Jesus Beech was cool too. Note of warning if you do decide to go on this trip bring a towel, perhaps a spare tshirt. if you have phone with you, it is worth while bring a plastic seal-able bag to protect it from the water!
