About the Business

Liberty Orchards is the home of Aplets & Cotlets, the famous fruit & nut candies of the Pacific Northwest. We've been in Cashmere for almost 100 years. Visit us for a factory tour and plenty of free samples! …

Ask a question

Do Aplets smell like apple?

They have some apple smell since there is apple juice concentrate and apple flavor in there... but there are also other flavors as well. We don't add artificial enhancers, so it's not as strong as artificially-flavored candies can be.

Almost every state has a notable sweet treat, to call their own, like Hershey's Chocolates, from Hershey, PA, Key Lime Pies, from the Florida Keys and Hammond's Old Fashioned Sweets, from Denver, CO! Welp, my home state of WA has had one, that's been around for almost 100 YEARS! What is it, you ask..... Aplets & Cotlets ( @apletscotletsstore / @apletsandcotlets ), in Cashmere, WA! They are a form of #TurkishDelights , made with local fruits and sometimes nuts. They were mostly popular with the older crowd, but then they got a resurgence, in the last few years, with the news that they might close! Another company bought them out and revived the well-loved sweets, back to life! Now they have a new line called Fruitlets, which are a simpler and more fruit gummy like candy, a variety of chocolate covered fruits & nuts, plus a delicious array of other tasty gummies! Move over Haribo! Liberty Orchards is comin' to getcha! So, give Aplets & Cotlets a try! You'll be glad you did! #PassportToGoodEats #FollowMeOnIG

Super nice place to visit! My family and I stopped by here on July the 3rd. We had a wonderful time walking through the very clean air conditioned store. Looking at all of the delicious looking fruit gels (lack of a better description) or fruit jellies. Either way they are delicious, the free samples were wonderful to taste and eat! I must confess that even though there was not a sign, we tried to limit ourselves to one tasting of each flavor but I have to be honest I had more than my share. They are super yummy! We were helped by a wonderful employee (her third day) I wish I could remember her name, but she was so super nice and helpful in helping us that it made the experience even better! We will definitely be back to buy more of these delicious fruit packed flavor bombs! Great place to visit!

Right in the middle of Cashmere Washington, it was a fun stop off from our trip to Leavenworth. We wanted to do a factory tour but found out it's only in operation on weekdays. On the weekend they still played a video for us to see the factory process and it was fun seeing some of the old artifacts. We loved the factory store deals. Tons of sales going for my favorite candy! We filled up a huge shopping bag for $20!

Photo of Susan S.

The store is delightfully set up. All the selections are well marked and very well labeled. We have always liked their product and their selection is wonderful. We waited 30 minutes for a tour of the factory. This wait time gave us sufficient time to peruse the store and make our selections. However, the tour lacked so much. There was no information about the founders, no information about what was currently going on, and very little in the actual tour to catch your eye or your interest. So much more could be done to make this a real tour. It was so disinteresting that I forgot to take any pictures.

Photo of Paris T.

Spontaneously decided to check out this candy store and it was an awesome surprise considering I had no idea what to expect. Upon entering the person working was getting ready to start the next tour so I joined right in. It's very brief, but really interesting to see how the candy is made. The tour guide was really friendly also. After the tour I tried some free samples, looked around and grabbed some more candies to try out. The pre packaged candies are really delicious, but some of the self serve/bag yourself candies were a bit stale and hard to chew. There is an array of souvenirs for sale also as well as an affordable $1 coffee/hot cocoa area. Restrooms and a bit of seating available that looks out the windows. Definitely a neat place to check out!

It took only about 15 minutes from Leavenworth (including ~8 minutes to route 97) and was a great sentimental detour for me. 5* Their fruit and nut candies were given to me when I first visited Seattle almost 30 years ago along with tours of Pike Place Market and the Space Needle so I see them as iconic to the Seattle experience. Had to make a pilgrimage here after hearing they were closing on June 1st. Was relieved to hear there is a possible buyer so it's no longer June 1st. Bought a whole bunch to share just in case (and since expiration date isn't until early 2022). It's a small simple store and factory but it felt good to have been there. They have short factory tours but it had already closed for the day when we got there shortly before closing time. Loved seeing the beautiful original stove in the store. It's a tasty candy and hope it continues somehow.

This is a historical landmark and gem of a place. You must stop by if passing through. These treats are such a delight and every time I eat these I always think of Edmond from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. A scene particularly in the book is when the white witch hands Edmond addition of Turkish delights and I never knew that these were based off that but I had a feeling because of how old is described and liberty Orchards even sells Turkish delights! These are great to have all year round and awesome that you're able to order and have them shipped online across the country... Especially around Christmas time! I love that they have these new Hawaiian themed ones.

The factory tour is brief but it's really cool to see how aplets and cotlets are made! Kind of a mini Wonka factory. The shop is amazing, they have a huge selection of treats so even if you don't like the signature item there is probably something for you! I bought a lot of chocolates but after sampling them after I got home and finding out they're delicious and really good quality, I wish I'd gotten even more. The Orchard Bars are amazing too and are a great deal. We stopped in since it was raining and we wanted an indoor activity, but it's awesome and we'll be back next time we're in the area no matter the weather.

Dont know about the store it self.but ordered from the catalog middle of november for christmas gifts.to be delivered 15th of December.nothing arrived by 22nd of December so i called.never got shipped.we try to shop local as much as possible.hope you get this problem fixed.Merry Christmas !!

I'll be honest: the factory tour is nice and interesting, hearing the history is cool and all... but it's really about the FREE samples and the killer deals. Lots of products that you don't find in the stores and the big pound bags with slightly irregularly shaped pieces at bargain prices. Where else can you find this much Applets & Cotlets at such a low price? Nowhere else! So yes, very enjoyable visit, we each scarfed down a handful of free samples and left with two heavy shopping bags of goodies, about 30 pounds total. If you are in the Leavenworth or Cashmere area you MUST check this place out, Applets & Cotlets is an iconic heritage delicacy from WA state.

Interesting factory but I was more interested in the FREE samples and the killer bargain deals!

“Try some aplets & cotlets!”

We're the makers of Aplets & Cotlets, America's favorite fruit-and-nut confection. Our company was founded by two enterprising Armenian immigrants who settled in the little town of Cashmere, located in the heart of the Washington State orchard country. In 1920 they created Aplets, made with apples and walnuts grown in local orchards. That original idea has expanded to the full line of fruit-and-nut candies and fine food gifts that you'll find at LibertyOrchards.com. We offer unique and delicious sweets, excellent personalized service, and good value. Our Famous Apple-Walnut & Apricot-Walnut Candies from the Pacific Northwest! The blossom-fresh flavor of crisp Washington apples, the tangy goodness of ripe apricots (locally known as "cots"), and the nutty richness of crunchy English walnuts have made our namesake Aplets and Cotlets our top sellers since 1920! We still do most everything by hand, just like when we first began making our famous candies, so you can taste the nostalgia in every bite!

Company That Makes Washington’s Famed Aplets and Cotlets Candies to Shutter in June

A few of powder sugar-coated Cotlets, a jellied confection made from apricots

Fans of Washington’s Aplets and Cotlets candies may be sad to hear that the company behind them is planning to close up shop. On March 17, the Cashmere, Washington-based Liberty Orchards — founded more than 100 years ago — announced it will cease operations June 1 . But it will continue to seek a buyer for the candy brands, the production equipment, and its buildings.

Washingtonians have been eating Aplets and Cotlets — fruit and walnut-filled treats coated in powdered sugar similar to Turkish Delights — for decades. Family-owned Liberty Orchards started producing them in the early 20th century as a way to make use of surplus apple and apricot crops, advertising them in the Seattle Times for the first time in 1921 . they became a hit across the state, showing up on shelves in supermarkets, convenience stores, and pharmacies. In 2009, there was even a legislative discussion to declare Aplets and Cotlets the official candy of Washington, but the proposed bill fizzled.

Liberty Orchards told Wenatchee World it had sought a buyer for the company over several years with no luck. While the pandemic impacted that search, it wasn’t the sole reason for the closure. The company’s 72-year-old president, Greg Taylor — grandson of Liberty Orchards co-founder Armen Tertsagian — recently told KIRO Radio that there simply wasn’t enough interest from the younger members of the family to keep operations going. The company has around 55 full-time employees, some of whom have been with Liberty Orchards for decades .

Taylor also mentioned that Liberty explored licensing Aplets and Cotlets to another company outside Cashmere, which may bring up memories of the time 24 years ago when Liberty Orchards threatened to leave the town unless Cashmere did more to promote the brand (eventually, two streets were named after Aplets and Cotlets).

But bygones seem to be bygones now. “Liberty Orchards is a part of Cashmere’s identity,” Cashmere’s mayor Jim Fletcher tells Eater Seattle. “Many long time Washington residents can recall stopping at Liberty Orchards. Taking the tour and sampling confections. Many kids growing up in Cashmere stopped at the Country Store after school for a free sample. Liberty Orchards has been a strong supporter of most all events, civic groups, school activities. Over 101 years many local people had worked at Liberty Orchards, we are sad to lose this important legacy.”

Makers of Aplets and Cotlets remain open during sale negotiations

While Tuesday was the day set for closure of Liberty Orchards, the maker of the iconic Aplets and Cotlets candy will remain open as negotiations continue with a prospective buyer for the Cashmere-based company.

The fourth-generation company announced Friday on Facebook that customers could continue to purchase the famous chewy, square-shaped fruit and nut confections that include walnuts and apricots while negotiations are ongoing.

Reached by phone Tuesday, Liberty Orchards President Greg Taylor said he could not elaborate on the Facebook post.

“I can’t tell you anything,” Taylor said. “We are in negotiations. We’ll continue to be open until we resolve our negotiations.”

Asked if the buyer has committed to continuing the business, Taylor said he couldn’t comment. He would also not give a definite date for closing if negotiations fail.

“For the time being, we are open and (customers) can visit our store in Cashmere or they can order online,” Taylor said. “Product is still available in the retail stores.”

Negotiations on a sale are the latest development for one of Washington’s most recognized treats following the announcement in March that the family was giving up its legacy.

“We gave it a good effort,” Taylor said in March. “No business lasts forever. The family has made the decision that its time to close.”

While the family has traced orders for Aplets and Cotlets back to 1918, the company officially celebrated its centennial in 2020.

“It’s officially 101 years, but we’ve probably been around a little longer,” Taylor said.

The discussions among family members to sell or close began before anyone heard of the coronavirus. While the pandemic hammered revenue generated from factory tours and in-person store shopping, online sales actually increased during the shutdown, Taylor said.

The company has the original factory and offices, and another warehouse for shipping, located a block apart in Cashmere.

“Our brands have value, and production equipment have value. We are seeking buyers for all those things,” Taylor said in March.

The town of Cashmere named two streets after the company.

The popularity of the candy through the years even has brought efforts to nominate Liberty Orchards’ confections as the state’s official candy.

While Taylor liked the publicity for the company’s Aplets and Cotlets, he acknowledged that a claim could also be made for the state’s other iconic candy, Almond Roca, made since 1914 by Brown and Haley Co. of Tacoma.

“Our whole family is proud we made it 100 years and the products we made and the customers we’ve served over the years and all the employment we have provided in Cashmere and the area,” he said.

Cashmere’s Liberty Orchards, the maker of Aplets and Cotlets, sold to KDV USA

CASHMERE — Just in time for Cashmere’s Founders’ Days celebration, Liberty Orchards, the makers of Aplets and Cotlets, announced Thursday it has a new owner — KDV USA.

The company is part of KDV Group, described as an international confectioner and snack maker.

According to the post on Liberty Orchards’ website and Facebook page, the Cashmere operation and its employees will continue “making the same recipes that have been popular for over 100 years.”

Factory tours and the retail store at 117 Mission Ave., Cashmere, and the mail order online store also will remain open.

The company, founded in 1920 by Armenian immigrants Mark Balaban and Armen Tertsagian, has been a mainstay in Cashmere where it has streets named in its honor — Aplets Way and Cotlets Way.

In January 2020, then-company president Greg Taylor, Tertsagian’s grandson who had been on the job for more than 40 years, announced the company was looking for a buyer. In an interview at the time, Taylor said the hope was to find a buyer interested in both continuing the brands and keeping the business in Cashmere. But if a buyer could not be found, the company would close the doors.

In March this year, Taylor announced it would close June 1. Just before Memorial Day weekend, Liberty Orchards announced — also on social media — that negotiations were underway with a potential buyer and the company’s operations would continue.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
