A safari park worker mauled by a lion has spoken of the moment the animal tore through her leg “like butter”.

Lauren Fagen, then 18, was cleaning out the cages of two lions at the Moholoholo rehab centre, South Africa in 2013 when they attacked her and one of them bit her leg .

Duma the lion reached through the bars of his cage and dragged Ms Fagen’s legs through an open gap.

Ms Fagen, who is from Quebec, Canada, was saved by fellow volunteer and British vet Natalie Bennett, who tried to fight off the lions with a broom.

In a new book called Bite Club , Ms Fagen told author Dougie Wight: “Duma stuck his entire leg through the bars, nearly the full length of it because of how far I was away.”

“Before I could react he got me with the tip of his nail into the middle of my right calf,” she continued.

“It was like butter, it went right in. I felt a thud - he had pulled me on to my back, I hit the ground and was looking up at the ceiling..

“He sliced open my leg. It looked like what you would see at the butcher, like something from a dead cow that would hang from the ceiling. I thought, That can’t be my leg because that’s not what … wait, it is my leg.

Ms Fagen started to scream for help and kicked with her other leg but the lion immediately pulled it through the bars up to the groin.

Duma’s female mate Tree then joined in the attack, gnawing at Ms Fagen’s feet.

The park worker suffered 10 flesh wounds on her legs and feet as a result of the attack.

She described how her left kneecap “nearly came completely off and was hanging by a piece of skin”.

Looking back at the attack 10 years on, the now 28 year-old said that while she suffered muscle and nerve damage “it could’ve been a lot worse.”

The Sun reports the distressing footage shows Mike Hodge being attacked by the big cat yesterday at the Makarele Predator Centre in Thabazimbi, South Africa.

The British man, who relocated from the UK with his wife Chrissy in 2003, is currently in hospital and is said to have sustained neck and jaw injuries.

Speaking with The Sun , a friend of Mr Hodge’s, who does not wish to be named, said he was rushed to the Mediclinic Hospital 5km away.

His friend revealed that the park owner was investigating a smell in the lion’s enclosure when the predator attacked him.

“Mike and one of his rangers were a little concerned about a smell in a compound that was upsetting one of the lions and had gone in through the gate to see what was causing it,” he said.

“It had put the lion on edge but when Mike went in the lion turned and came for him and he ran but couldn’t get through the gate quick enough and it had him.

“There is no information coming out of the hospital but all I know is that he is alive and his wife and daughter are with him.

“I do not know how badly hurt he is but he is a lovely guy and I wish him all the best.

“He is no fool around lions and knows how to interact with them but clearly something went wrong” she said.

Mike Hodge and wife, Chrissy, are both from the UK. Picture: Facebook

South African police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe told News24 that Mr Hodge sustained injuries to his neck and jaw but was recuperating.

In the footage, the lion spots Mr Hodge after he enters its enclosure and chases him towards the metal door of the facility.

In astonishing scenes, the elderly park owner is dragged like a rag doll towards some bushes.

Onlookers scream for help while the animal paws Mr Hodge, who does not appear to be moving.

The lion then drags him further into the bushes but then gunshots ring out and the lion is scared away.

But the predator remains near the victim while more shots are fired into the air.

One girl who is watching the attack is heard crying in horror as another man shouts for someone to “get a rifle.”

The animal has reportedly been killed following the attack.

Mr and Mrs Hodge are believed to have started a lion project in Thabazimbi, northern South Africa, which became the Marakele Animal Sanctuary in 2009.

And due to the park’s popularity, the couple created the predator centre within the sanctuary featuring at least a dozen big cats, including white lions, cheetahs and two Bengal tigers.

Marakele remains closed following the attack while Mrs Hodge was said to be too upset to comment on the incident.

Social media users however felt that the lion should not have been put down and questioned why Mr Hodge would be inside the lion’s enclosure when it was that close to him.

WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO: 9 lionesses attack lion in front of horrified visitors at West Midlands Safari Park

Nine lionesses attack lion as horrified visitors look on

A group of lionesses attacked a lion at West Midlands Safari Park over food, as a group of visitors caught the disturbing footage on film.

This is the moment nine lionesses brutally attacked a lion in front of horrified visitors in Worcestershire, England.

Shocking footage shows the pack of females tearing their teeth into the leader of the pride's flesh at West Midlands Safari Park.

The lionesses then drag him from the rocks into the water where he is seen helplessly roaring in pain.

Safari workers at the enclosure in Bewdley, Worcs., had to step in and spray fire extinguishers at the beasts to break up the ferocious attack after the male was left covered in blood.

It is conceivable the lionesses were trying to kill their leader because he was too old to run the pride.

However, Mya Beverstock, who caught the attack on film, said the females may have pounced on him after a dispute over food.

She said: "It pretty much happened out of the blue. It was feeding time and then suddenly we heard growling and roaring.

"Two other males stepped back and didn't get involved while the females attacked the leader. He may have ate before his turn."

She added: "Safari workers dealt with it very quickly. Three jeeps ended up in the enclosure honking their horns and driving towards the lions to break them up.

"One of the jeeps sprayed them with a fire extinguisher which ended up mostly breaking up the fight.

"We did go around the park again afterwards and all the female lions had been removed from the enclosure and it was only the three males in there."

Luckily, the lion who was pounced on survived the brutal attack.

In February of this year  a pride of lions pounced at a car  at the same safari park.

No one was injured in the attack but the roof was left dented and scratched.

This story originally appeared in The Sun .

Editor's note: West Midlands Park issued an update on the attack, saying the male lion, Jilani, did not experience any serious injuries and only suffered some stiffness and soreness.

American Woman Killed by Lion Attack in South African Safari Park

The 29-year-old Katherine Chappell was killed when a lion jumped through an open window of her car driving through Lion Park early Monday

A lion killed a 29-year-old American woman and injured a man at a wildlife park in South Africa early Monday.

The attack took place at Lion Park – a wildlife park located between Johannesburg and Pretoria that offers self-driven and guided tours.

The woman – who ABC News has identified as Katherine Chappell – was riding in the passenger seat of an SUV taking photos when a lion jumped through the open window and mauled her, Johannesburg’s Eye Witness News reports . The driver, a tour guide, was injured while trying to rescue the woman.

“They had their windows all the way down, which is strictly against policy,” Scott Simpson, assistant operations manager at Lion Park told the Associated Press . “The lion bit the lady through the window.”

While park staff were able to chase the lion away, Simpson told ABC News that the woman died while receiving treatment from emergency services.

“We can confirm that a U.S. citizen was killed in Lion Park in Johannesburg on June 1,” a U.S. State Department spokesperson said in an email to PEOPLE. The spokesperson added that they are providing all possible services, but would not comment further out of respect for the privacy of the family.

PEOPLE has reached out to Lion Park for comment.

Lion Park was featured in a November 60 Minutes story as one of dozens of parks in South Africa where tourists pay to pet lion cubs. The story alleged that once these lions reach maturity, they are sold off for “canned hunts” – where people pay to shoot lions in an enclosed area – as they are too dangerous to be around tourists.

Zoo worker dies after apparent lion attack in Fukushima

Tohoku Safari Park in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, on Thursday

An animal keeper died apparently after being attacked by a lion at a zoo in northeastern Japan, police and the facility's operator said Thursday.

The scar suggested Kato had been mauled by an animal, and security camera footage showed a lion pouncing on him, according to the police and the zoo's vice president Norichika Kumakubo.

Kato, an experienced staffer who had worked at the zoo for more than 25 years, was apparently attacked while trying to close the door between the cage and the workers' passage, Kumakubo said.

The zoo said it will be closed until safety management measures are improved.

Yes, Lions Will Hunt Humans if Given the Chance

The tragic attack at a South AFrican park serves as a reminder that lions are predators and humans are prey

Helen Thompson

Helen Thompson

South African Lion

Earlier this week, a female African lion  attacked and killed a 29-year-old American woman on safari outside Johannesburg, South Africa. It's a tragedy, but given what zoologists know about lions, not one that's totally unexpected.

While visiting a lion reserve on a car tour, the woman rolled her window down to take some pictures, according to Brent Swails and Dana Ford of CNN . She likely did not see the lioness approach. The animal stopped three feet from the vehicle before lunging through the window. A guide, who was also in the car, tried to fight the animal off, sustaining injuries to his arm. Staff chased the lioness away, and the woman died at the scene. Signs in the park warn visitor to keep their windows rolled up, and the part has had previous incidents stemming from open windows.

While the facts of the attack are horrible, the lioness didn't do anything that's inconsistent with her biology, as Mary Bates explains for National Geographic . Lions are extremely accomplished predators and adept hunters. For them, humans count as prey. Ignoring their prowess in this department is a big mistake. Luke Dollar , a conservation scientist who directs the National Geographic Society's Big Cats Initiative, told Bates. "Almost any organism around lions might be a potential prey item, and for people to think that they are an exception is folly" Dollar said.  "I would imagine that every other primate that co-exists with big cats is acutely aware of the position they hold relative to the top predators of the world."

Given the intersection of tourism and conservation at sites like the lion park, humans sometimes acquire a false sense of security. As society expands to less developed areas, humans, lions and other predators have also inevitably crossed paths more frequently.

Since not all attacks are reported, it's hard to put numbers on the number of lion attacks seen globally. Estimates range from 20 to 250 . Tanzania has the highest population of lions in Africa, and between 1990 and 2004 , the country saw 593 deaths and 308 injuries from African lion attacks.

Aside from lack of awareness on the part of the human, there are a few things that might drive a lion to attack a human. The first and most obvious is hunger. Without horns or fangs, humans also look like easier targets to older or sick lions. In certain instances, females might perceive humans as a threat to their cubs. If the animal is injured, it also might feel threatened by the presence of a human.

Though an investigation of the attack continues, park officials told SABC News that they do not plan to execute the lioness involved in this week's attack. Instead, she will be moved to a private part of the park.

Dollar told Bates he hopes that the attack can at least raise awareness among tourists and encourage people to be careful while out observing the impressive predators in the wild.

Shocking Footage Shows Lion Attacking 72-Year-Old Safari Park Owner in Front of Horrified Onlookers

The owner of a South Africa safari park was attacked by one of his lion wards.

According to Daily Mail , Mike Hodge, the 72-year-old owner of Marakele Animal Sanctuary in Thabazimbi, South Africa, was mauled by a lion at his park after he entered the animal’s enclosure to investigate a strange odor that was agitating the lion. Video was captured of the shocking incident by one of the park’s guests.

Footage shows Hodge walking towards the exit of the enclosure when he is suddenly pursued by the male big cat. The park owner tries to exit the metal door but is grabbed by the animal near the neck and dragged deeper into the enclosure. Onlookers can be heard throughout the video screaming in distress, with some also calling for help. Eventually, a shot is fired, likely from the game warden, which causes the lion to drop Hodge.

After the attack, Hodge was rushed to Mediclinic Hospital with neck and jaw injuries, reports The Sun.

“There is no information coming out of the hospital but all I know is that he is alive and his wife and daughter are with him,” an unnamed female friend of Hodge told The Sun . “I do not know how badly hurt he is, but he is a lovely guy and I wish him all the best.”

The Daily Mail reports that Hodge is recovering and even sent a photo of himself smiling from his hospital. The lion involved in the mauling is believed to have been put down.

According to the Marakele Animal Sanctuary website , Hodge and his wife Chrissy moved to South Africa from the UK in 1999, starting a “lion project” in 2003. The project then expanded into a safari park open to tourists several years later. The park offers overnight accommodations and rides in something called a “lion mobile” — a caged truck that drives through the lion park, allowing the animals to jump on the vehicle with guests inside.

The park is currently closed following the attack, reports Daily Mail.

While online commenters have scolded Hodge for getting so close to the big cat, the park owner’s friend said that Hodge would never put himself into a situation he thought was dangerous.

“He is no fool around lions and knows how to interact with them but clearly something went wrong,” she told The Sun.

PEOPLE has not yet received a response for a comment from Marakele Animal Sanctuary about the attack.

Lioness killed by lion in front of onlookers at Longleat on New Year’s Day

AUSTRALIA-ANIMALS-LION-BIRTHDAY

A lion killed a lioness at the Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire on New Year's Day.

The park stated that, despite their staff’s best attempts, the lioness's injuries could not be healed, in what they called “a rare but natural incident”.

It said: “This weekend (January 1, 2023) saw one of the lionesses at Longleat sadly killed by another lion. This kind of incident is very rare but can naturally occur amongst apex predators.

“It happened incredibly quickly, with the lioness dying almost instantly. Our professional keepers were immediately on the scene, however, the timescales involved meant there was no possibility of intervention.

Guests did not appear to be aware that the lioness had been killed, however, a visitor who was close to the enclosure said on social media that a wounded lioness was visible lying still on the ground.

The park confirmed there was no risk posed to guests close to the lion enclosure. Visitors said they were diverted away from the lion enclosure in the early afternoon because of an unknown major incident at the time.

Only two weeks before this incident, two rare red panda cubs at the safari park died when the temperature went below freezing. The two newborn animals , which were discovered in their nesting box, were born last summer.

Initial investigations, according to the staff, indicated that their deaths were caused by hypothermia and weaning issues. Tala and Sumi, the two newborn cubs, were born to Emma and Lionel as a result of the park's breeding programme for endangered species.

The attraction's employees shared a post on social media at the time, which read: “We know so many of you have loved seeing these beautiful creatures for yourselves and will share our sadness in having to say goodbye to them.”

Safari park apologises to families who saw lions chase down and kill monkey accidentally let into enclosure

"We are truly sorry that our visitors witnessed what must have been a really distressing sight," the attraction says.

A Barbary macaque in the wild in Morocco

A Scottish safari park has apologised to two families who saw the moment lions chased down and killed a monkey which had accidentally been allowed into their enclosure.

Blair Drummond Safari Park, in Stirling, said in a statement on its website: "We are truly sorry that our visitors witnessed what must have been a really distressing sight.

"This tragic event is being felt deeply by the teams involved who care for our animals around the clock.

The visitors, it said, had been given "a full account of what happened" while support has been given to those staff directly involved.

Shaw, a nine-year-old Barbary macaque, was killed when it jumped into the lion enclosure after escaping its own pen on 1 December.

The park's lion warden "did all he could to protect the macaque... but was unable to protect them from the lions," who "responded as they would in the wild, by chasing and sadly killing the animal," it added.

Witnesses are reported to have heard the creature shrieking in agony while video has been published showing a lioness running through her enclosure with the macaque in its mouth, pursued by three other lions.

Another of the monkeys that escaped was coaxed back to its enclosure.

The statement said: "We are taking this extremely seriously; the safety of our visitors and the safety and care of our animals is our highest priority.

"The incident in the lion enclosure has never happened before in the history of Blair Drummond Safari Park and we share the shock and concerns that this took place."

An internal investigation found the monkeys, members of an endangered species, escaped through the gates to their habitat, which had been opened to let in a visitor's car.

The staff member who was manually operating the gates was not to blame and new operating procedures have been established to prevent any repeat, the statement said.

The park said it had reported the incident to BIAZA (The British and Irish Association of Zoos).

Barbary macaques are classified as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which warned in 2018 its future "is uncertain due to the reduction and fragmentation of its natural habitat".

Once widespread in the Mediterranean, the species has a population of between eight and 10,000 in the forests of Morocco, Algeria and the Rock of Gibraltar, the IUCN said.

Visitors at a safari park in the UK were left horrified after a lion attacked another lioness and killed her 'almost instantly' on New Year's Day. According to a BBC report, the safari park staff immediately rushed to the spot but, despite their best efforts, they were unable to save the lioness from its injuries.

Meanwhile, visitors said they were taken away from the enclosure due to an unknown major incident. One guest even posted on social media that they were held up in the enclosure and could see a lioness not moving on the floor, injured, according to a Metro report.

Longleat Safari Park later confirmed that this was due to the death of a lioness. The park also confirmed that the incident took place on 1 January 2023.

Zookeeper killed in lion attack at safari park in Fukushima

THE ASAHI SHIMBUN

September 29, 2023 at 12:30 JST

Photo/Illutration

A veteran zookeeper was killed in an apparent lion attack after he was possibly dragged into a cage  at Tohoku Safari Park in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, on Sept. 28.

At the time, Kenichi Kato, 53,  had been transferring a lion from a larger, more free-range environment into the cage where he and another zookeeper were feeding the big cat.

Normally, the zookeepers and the lions never come into direct contact with one another. However, a cage door that was supposed to be closed was reportedly  open and Kato was likely dragged by a female lion into the cage.

At around 3:25 p.m., emergency services received a 119 call from the park stating that a zookeeper had collapsed inside a lion enclosure.

According to the Nihonmatsu Police Station, Kato was found unconscious and bleeding from the neck inside the cage and was rushed to a hospital in Fukushima city. He was pronounced dead about an hour later.

According to Tohoku Safari Park, Kato was a longtime zookeeper with 27 years of experience.

In response to the accident, the park announced on the evening of Sept. 28 that it would be "temporarily closed for a while until safety measures are improved and we can provide reliable reassurance."

One person has died and two others injured after being mauled by Asiatic lions inside a safari park near Gujarat's Gir Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park.

At around 11 am on Thursday morning, lions attacked Rajnish Keshwala, a tracker employed with the forest department. Another employee, Dinesh, who had tried to rescue Keshwala, was injured. News agency United News of India (UNI) reported that the lions, which are housed in cages inside the park, dragged Keshwala into the nearby forest. His mutilated body was later found at a distance of 2 kilometres from the cages.

A forester, Meramal Bharda, was also injured while trying to retrieve Keshwala’s body.

The Devaliya Safari Park-cum-Interpretation Zone near Sasan houses 10 lions.

“I understand that these lions are fed, managed and kept inside cages,” noted lion expert Ravi Chellam told Down To Earth .

“Unfortunately, officials in our country usually treat all lions, whether wild or captive, in a similar manner,” he rued.

“These are carnivores and big cats and are potentially dangerous. They can't  be taken for granted,” another veteran lion expert, Meena Venkataraman told Down To Earth.

“A conclusion can only be reached once we know what triggered the aggression in the lions,” she added.

"It is a most unfortunate event. Both the lions that attacked Rajnish have been put back in their cages. We have decided that they will not be released into the open again, for the safety of tourists," D T Vasavada, Chief Conservator of Forests, Junagadh told Down To Earth .

The two injured employees have been admitted to a hospital in Junagadh city.

"The Devaliya Safari Park will open for the public on Friday morning," said Vasavada.

How To Spend 3 Days In Masai Mara, The Safari Park From The Lion King

This Kenyan national park is one of the best places in the world to see lions, leopards, and cheetahs in the wild.

lion attack at safari park

When it comes to planning an African safari , TikTok can agree on one thing: Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya needs to be on your itinerary.

“The Land of the Big Cats” has a reputation as one of the best places on the continent to see lions, leopards, and cheetahs in the wild; it was one of the main filming locations of the live-action Lion King movie .

Masai Mara’s location in the Great Rift Valley gives it a leg up on wildlife diversity compared to other reserves. Its 580 miles of lush savannah is home to almost 90 different mammal species, and safari-goers have a good chance of spotting all of the African “Big Five” — lions, leopards, elephants, African buffalo, and the elusive black rhinos — as well as members of the slightly lesser-known (but equally ‘Gram-worthy) so-called “Ugly Five,” hyenas and warthogs included. If you visit in late summer, you might even see the Great Migration of over 2 million wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores crossing the Mara River from the neighboring Serengeti Desert.

This February, I spent 10 days visiting Kenya’s national parks and game reserves on an itinerary curated by EF Ultimate Break , a Gen Z and millennial tour company. After a week of bush glamping in sparsely vegetated and dusty parks throughout Kenya, Masai Mara was comparatively lush, and my safari Jeep was constantly stumbling upon families of elephants, giraffes, and lions.

Giraffes in Masai Mara.

If you’re heading to Kenya on safari soon or scrolling TikTok for future inspiration , here’s what’s worth doing at Masai Mara and how to spend three days at the reserve.

What To Do At Masai Mara

Day 1: hang out with baby elephants & meet the maasai tribe.

After a 20-plus-hour journey from Chicago, I stretched my legs at one of Nairobi’s most popular attractions. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Orphans Project houses baby elephants and rhinos who are currently unable to survive in the wild for whatever reason, and it’s just as cute as you’d expect. There was a collective “aw” as the tiniest baby black rhino stumbled out to meet the crowd, and we got introduced to all the baby elephants as they clumsily ran to the keepers for their bottles of milk.

The experience was more crowded and touristy than I expected, but I enjoyed learning the story behind each baby animal, seeing their personalities, and petting them. You’re also able to sponsor one of the baby elephants or rhinos until they’re ready to go back into the wild.

One must-see in Masai Mara: the baby elephants.

After hanging out with the animals, get into your safari Jeep to drive the five hours to Masai Mara. I stayed at PrideInn Mara Camp, which had glamping tents and cottages just steps from the park and Lake Talek, but there are plenty of accommodations around Masai Mara’s perimeter (including regular hotels like a JW Marriott Masai Mara if sleeping in a tent without air conditioning isn’t your vibe).

The best part of the PrideInn Mara Camp (and others in the area) is the presence of the Maasai tribe , which welcomed us with a traditional song and dance. There were also a number of warriors who worked in the hotel and who would walk us to and from our rooms if it was late at night.

Day 2: Take A Hot Air Balloon & A Drive

The park is huge, so soaring over the savannah to see the landscape and animals from above is an efficient and bucket list-worthy way to start off your safari experience.

Take a hot air balloon ride over Masai Mara for a bird's-eye view.

We had to wake up at 4 a.m. to head over to the hot air balloon launch site, but I quickly stopped complaining about the early call time when we were in the balloon and the sun was rising over Masai Mara.

We got to take in bird's eye views of the Mara River (including a rare sighting of an adorable baby hippo that was splashing through it), check out a family of grazing giraffes from above, and get eye-level with the vultures in the trees. Afterward, we enjoyed an English-style brunch with unlimited mimosas in the middle of the bush, then headed back to the camp to nap it all off.

Travel writer Lara Walsh took a hot air balloon ride over Masai Mara.

In the early afternoon, we headed on our second safari and stayed until twilight. After spending almost two weeks in Kenya, I realized it’s 100% worth doing two safari drives a day — one in the morning as the sun rises and one at dusk right before the predators are about to start hunting — to get the fullest picture of how the animals act in their natural habitat.

Depending on the time of day, you’ll also see different personalities from the lions. When I went in the morning, the lions weren’t the apex predators I’d anticipated. Instead, the pride was almost playful, with a young male lion with a dandelion mane nuzzling his father and the female lions, and cuddling with them in the sun. The only hint of their agility and quick reflexes were shown in how they quickly flipped from side to side and how alert they seemed at all times, with their heads suddenly popping above the grass when they’d been lazily napping in the sun just moments earlier.

A lion in Masai Mara.

Another day, as the sun went down, I saw a group of lionesses who’d been napping and were barely camouflaged in the long grass start to oh-so-casually make their move. They inched toward a grazing herd of wildebeests, their eyes locked on their next meal. I wouldn’t have experienced these different personalities if I hadn’t seen both in action.

Day 3: Go On A Morning Game Drive & Visit The Maasai Tribe

After going on a sunrise game drive, take an afternoon tour of the Maasai tribe’s village. Dressed in signature bright red robes, the warriors greeted us at the entrance of their village. They taught us some of their chants and performed a 10-minute celebratory song and dance that we were encouraged to take part in, which included mimicking the roaring of lions, shaking our shoulders, and competing to see who could jump the highest.

Then, they sectioned us off into groups to tour the family huts and learn about their pastoral lifestyle. Many of the Maasai people have gone into tourism and are employed by hotels and other hospitality businesses in the area, but they’re one of the few tribes where many members still practice their traditional way of life.

Members of the Maasai tribe greet visitors with a ceremony.

After the tour, we got to shop the tribe’s gorgeous beadwork, carved wooden products, and other souvenirs. I picked up a blue bracelet, a beaded choker, and some wooden coasters painted with safari animals to bring back home with me.

Ultimately, I came back to Chicago feeling relaxed, inspired, and fully ready to take advantage of my apartment’s air conditioning. I gained a deep appreciation for my proximity to wildlife during my bush glamping adventure (yes, even for the crickets and lizards in my tent).

Going on safari was life-changing for so many reasons. I was awestruck by seeing a 3-day-old hippo hanging out with his mom, and a pack of elephants racing across the savannah. I was surprised that the lions and giraffes seemed to barely take notice of our Jeep.

Animals lounged, seemingly unbothered, near my safari tour group.

The safari also taught me a lesson in patience. Unlike in a zoo, you’re not able to control when or where you’ll see cheetahs, hippos, or prides of lions — which ends up making it so much more fulfilling when you do.

It’s not a question of if, but when, I’ll go back to Masai Mara on safari. And who knows — maybe this time I’ll spend more than a few days exploring Kenya’s most famous game reserve.

Elephant attack leaves American woman dead in Zambia's Kafue National Park

By Sarah Carter , Adam Duxter

Updated on: April 4, 2024 / 6:13 PM EDT / CBS News

Johannesburg — An elephant attack that left an American woman dead in Zambia was captured in harrowing cellphone video over the weekend. The clip, shot by tourists in Zambia's Kafue National Park, begins inside an open safari vehicle during a game drive.

In the distance, a large bull elephant can be seen coming toward the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle cannot be seen in the video clip, but someone is heard, saying: "Oh my goodness," before a man says, "it's coming fast."

The vehicle stops and then another voice, presumably the game ranger, tries to ward off the elephant verbally as the large pachyderm hooks its tusks onto the vehicle and rolls it several times.

Family members  confirmed that Gail Mattson, a 79-year-old Minnesotan, was killed in the attack. In the post on Facebook, Rona Wells said her mother had died in "a tragic accident while on her dream adventure."

Gail Mattson

Mattson, a retired loan officer, was 11 days into a month-long vacation overseas, her family told WCCO, describing her as "adventurous" and "loved by everybody."

Wilderness Safaris, which operates the tour in the Zambian park, said in a statement that it was cooperating with national authorities to investigate the incident and it offered condolences to Mattson's family.

Wilderness said the other tourists traveling with Mattson were also Americans, four of whom sustained minor injuries in the attack.

"Our guides are extremely well trained, but sadly the terrain and vegetation was such that the route became blocked," the company said, explaining that the ranger "could not move the vehicle out of harm's way quickly enough."

Gail Mattson

Mattson was evacuated to a hospital in South Africa after the incident but succumbed to her injuries.

Kafue National Park is Zambia's largest national park at 8,650 square miles. It's a popular tourist destination as it's home to five of sub-Saharan Africa's iconic big animal species, lions, elephants, leopards, rhinoceros and buffalo.

American tourist killed in tragic elephant attack on safari

Kafue, Zambia - An American tourist was killed and several others injured in an elephant attack at Kafue National Park in Zambia.

The video shows the elephant first chasing the vehicle and then, when the driver suddenly stops, starting to attack.

The ten-foot elephant ran straight towards the vehicle and did not appear to want to stop. The last thing the recording shows is the truck tipping over.

The national park has not yet commented on the incident, and it is still unclear exactly how the tourist died.

How did the tragic elephant attack happen?

Keith Vincent, the managing director of Wilderness Safaris, confirmed the death of the 80-year-old woman and said that another tourist was seriously injured and the other four were slightly injured.

According to him, the seriously injured man was taken to a private medical facility in South Africa, while the others were treated at a clinic.

"Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly, the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide's route became blocked," Vincent said of the terrible incident.

He reported that a helicopter had been sent to the accident and that both the police and the Department of National Parks & Wildlife were involved in the investigation of the incident.

He also assured that the deceased would be returned to the US.

"This is an extremely tragic event, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died," the Wilderness boss affirmed.
