Louis Cole Scores GRAMMY Nom for Best Alternative Jazz Album; Announces Tour Dates

Louis Cole’s album Quality Over Opinion (Brainfeeder) has been nominated for Best Alternative Jazz Album at the upcoming 66th annual GRAMMY Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on Monday February 5th, 2024.

Today, Cole also announces a string of live concertsfor 2024 with support from longtime collaborator Genevieve Artadi, with tickets on-sale starting November 17th.

20 tracks deep, Quality Over Opinion was written, performed and produced on his own in his modest home studio in Los Angeles, but Cole did invite a handful of close friends to contribute, namely Genevieve Artadi (“my no.1 music collaborator”); saxophonist Sam Gendel – Cole’s friend for 17 years; pianist Chris Fishman; Nate Wood from the band Kneebody; Marlon Mackey (“a pillar of the Bakersfield music scene”); and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel.

“This album is a representation of me trying to make the best, most powerful and listenable music I can. For myself and also others,” Cole says.

Cole’s main instrument is the drums and he has a background in jazz although the music he writes bears little resemblance to jazz in any pure or classical sense. His connection to the movement is more conceptual: “The root of jazz is pure freedom… no limits… just what you’re thinking right at that moment… a pure blast of limitlessness”.

Accordingly, Cole’s touchstones for Quality Over Opinion include boundary-pushing composers such as Gustav Mahler and György Ligeti alongside jazz icons like Miles Davis, the Swedish extreme metal band Meshuggah, Morten Lauridsen (distinguished professor of music and American Choral Master) and Super Mario Kart.

“There is no continuous thread of a story on this album, each song expresses its own moment in my life and time,” explains Cole. “I was inspired by joy, pain and the constant mission to pull something out of life around me.”

Cole’s insane musicianship is no secret – he’s been sharing performance videos on YouTube for a decade – growing a dedicated fanbase who appreciate both his craft and off-the-wall style. Drums, bass, keys — he has a monk-like attitude to practice and perfecting his art. Thundercat describes him as “one of Los Angeles's greatest musicians” and earlier this year invited him to play drums on his recent tour of Japan.

The pair have frequently written together including on the aptly titled “I Love Louis Cole” from Thundercat’s Grammy-winning album It Is What It Is, “Bus in the Streets,” and “Jameel’s Space Ride” (from Thundercat’s 2017 opus Drunk) and “Tunnels in the Air” for Cole’s 2018 album Time. Flying Lotus has also expressed admiration for Cole, calling him “super inspirational” during the writing of his 2019 album Flamagra.

Cole embarks on a set of tour dates in early 2024, a chance for fans to catch the GRAMMY-nominated musician live in concert. Tickets on sale to the general public starting November 17th.

Louis Cole is a Los Angeles based singer songwriter, Grammy awarded producer, composer and multi-instrumentalists. Celebrated as one of the world's most future-sonic-funk drummers and co-founder of KNOWER, his mission is “to create deep feelings through music.” Cole has proudly been DIY to date, amassing millions of views with his viral videos like ‘Bank Account’, international tours and debut album ‘Time’ released on Brainfeeder.

Known for presenting a show that you will never forget, Louis Cole’s powerful stage presence invites you into his broad and deep sound world. As a multi-instrumentalist his writing is a blend of quickfire, hook-laden electro-funk bullets, wistful humor and soft-focus deep balladry. Always performing from the heart of his vastly imaginative emotional portrait, Louis Cole’s songs evolve with his live concerts that feature his 18-piece brass band, to full brass ensembles with WDR Bob Mintzer, solo shows, or with his 4-piece jazz format.

At the forefront of redefining what jazz, electronics and cinematics sounds like; Louis Cole long time collaborators also flavour his sonic mix, notably Thundercat, Genevieve Artadi, Dennis Hamm to and acclaimed jazz pianist and experimental composer Brad Mehldau who featured on his album ‘Time’.

Known for presenting a show that you will never forget, witness Louis Cole’s summer festival tour stopping in Europe, Canada, USA featuring a blazing line up of special guests.

5 times j. cole apologized and waved the white flag, for better and worse.

From lyrics about Tamera Mowry to Kendrick, Cole's bars have landed him in hot water over the years.

J. Cole Performing At Concert

J. Cole is by far one of the more endearing artists in music today. Despite having evolved into a father, mogul, and superstar under the spotlight of the public eye, which can come with the magnification of one’s lowlights and questionable decisions, the 39-year-old’s heart usually appears to be in the right place.

This is exemplified by his dedication to fighting against social injustices and broadcasting positive commentary and content to his supporters, which they’ve known to come and love him for. Outside of boasting of his otherworldly rap skills, Cole is as humble as they come, a trait which even some of his staunchest supporters have taken issue with throughout his career.

While many artists can be defiant to a fault, Cole comes across as more malleable and passive when it comes to conflict, on wax and off. While he’s received apologies from the likes of Canibus, Noname, 03 Greedo, and Soulja Boy over the years, Cole has made it part of his reputation to wave the white flag when confronted, a trend that has threatened to become a chink in his armor in regards for his stake for rap supremacy.

Here are five instances in which J. Cole apologized and made headlines as a result.

Autism Speaks

Autism Speaks

J. Cole connected with Drake on the latter’s 2013 release “Jodeci’s Back,” which marked the two rap stars’ second time appearing alongside each other on a record.

While the song was well-received by fans, lyrics by Cole comparing his competition to those diagnosed with autism and deeming them as “retarded” ruffled the feathers of many, leading to a petition being file by Autism Speaks demanding an apology from the hitmaker.

Cole would not only public ask for forgiveness for his misstep, but would have the offensive lyrics edited from all commercially released versions of the song moving forward.

“I said something highly offensive to people with Autism. Last week, when I first saw a comment from someone outraged about the lyric, I realized right away that what I said was wrong,” the 39-year-old wrote in a statement at the time.

“I was instantly embarrassed that I would be ignorant enough say something so hurtful. What makes the crime worse is that I should have known better. To the entire Autism community who expressed outrage, I’m moved and inspired by your passion, and I’m amazed at how strong you are as a unit.”

Nas Wearing Black Coat

J. Cole is regarded as one of the most acclaimed artists in Hip-Hop today, but there was a time when his creative direction was criticized not only by music fans, but the very rap legends he grew up idolizing. While his 2011 hit single “Work Out” dominated urban radio, earned him his first Top 20 hit, and was certified double platinum by the RIAA, lyrical icon Nas was not a fan of the record, deeming it as a release below par of an emcee of Cole’s potential.

Having that news relayed to him by mutual collaborator No ID, Cole was inspired to dedicate a song on his sophomore album, Born Sinner , to apologize for disappointing Nas — a move that was met with mixed reactions. After the release of “Let Nas Down,” Cole was able to personally play the track for him after being seated by each other on a plane.

“Soon as I seen him, I knew that this was fate,” the rap star told BET in June 2013. “I was telling people, this album has so many moments that connected that let me know I was doing the right thing, and that was one of them… I give him my headphones — I’m trying to hear what part of the song he’s on, ’cause he’s behind me. About a minute in to the song, he’s just like ‘whooo!’ beating my chair, just bangin’ my chair. Overall he was wild, the look on his face was like, honored, honored that I would make that, and also highly impressed. So that was a huge moment for me.”

Tamera Mowry

Tamera Mowry

In April 2013, J. Cole dropped off Truly Yours 2, an EP meant to tide fans over until the release of Born Sinner later that year.

On “Cole Summer,” the project’s opening track, the then-rising star fantasizes about having a menage trois with Tia and Tamera Mowry of Sister, Sister fame, rhyming, “If I had one wish, I would f*k Tia and Tamera, at the same time/ And put name tags on their titties, so I don’t get their name wrong/ Screaming, ‘Game on!’”

Shortly after, Tamera Mowry would playfully clap back on social media by promising to give Cole “a good momma pinch” on his arm upon crossing paths, albeit while complimenting his production skills. However, Mowry would later admit to feeling “some kind of way” about the namedrop during an appearance on The Real in March 2017.

Mowry did note that Cole personally apologized for the lewd mention the next time they saw one another after the song’s release. “I’m more offended that he couldn’t tell us apart,” Tamera told host Jeannie Mai at the time, referencing a differentiation trait between her and her twin sister. “I have a mole, J. Cole — right there!”

Concert Delays

J. Cole Performing

In 2021, Cole embarked on The Off-Season Tour, which was co-headlined by 21 Savage and spanned 20 shows across North America. When the tour stopped in Greensboro, NC, miles from his hometown of Fayetteville, fans became frustrated when the show, which was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., did not start until hours later. To make matters worse, ticketholders were shut out of the venue until around 10:15 p.m., leading a number of concertgoers to express their frustrations on social media.

Cole would catch wind of the vitriol aimed at himself and the Greensboro Coliseum, apologizing to those who endured the lengthy weight to see him perform live. “We been hitting delays on shows because the production is taking too long for the crew to put up,” he wrote in an Instagram post at the time. “I apologize for the inconvenience. I hate playing with peoples time and money. We working to get it sorted out. Greensboro we going up tonight, I’m sorry for your delay.”

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar Wearing At MTV Video Music Awards

Hip-Hop got an unexpected, yet welcomed surprise when Kendrick Lamar dropped a verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s new smash single “Like That,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 following its release. Guest spots by K.Dot are becoming rare, making the feature significant, but it was the jabs aimed at Drake and J. Cole that turned the track from a hot record into an overarching topic within the culture.

A week later, Cole unveiled an impromptu treat of his own with his new album Might Delete Later , which includes “7 Minute Drill,” a song that finds Cole firing back at Kendrick, claiming that his latest album was his worst thus far. Despite a number of fans praising Cole’s swiftness in responding to Lamar, the rapper had a change of heart, opting to apologize to Kendrick for dissing him on a record during his annual Dreamville Festival concert in North Carolina.

“I was conflicted because, I know my heart and I know how I feel about my peers, these two n**gas that I’m blessed to even stand beside in this game and let alone chase their greatness,” Cole told the crowd and those streaming the show. “I felt conflicted because I know I don’t really feel no way. But the world want to see blood… I moved in a way that, spiritually, I feel bad.”

He continued, “That was the lamest, goofiest sh*t… I pray that God aligns me back on my purpose and on my path,” he continued. “I pray that my ni**a didn’t really feel no way. And if he did, my ni**a I got my chin out. Take your best shot, I’ma take that sh*t on the chin. Boy, do what you do. All good.”

How ‘extra pitching coach’ Gerrit Cole is helping the Yankees while injured

TAMPA, FL - FEBRUARY 22: Nestor Cortes #65 and Gerrit Cole #45 of the New York Yankees talk during spring training at George M. Steinbrenner Field on February 22, 2024 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by New York Yankees/Getty Images)

NEW YORK — New York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes was roughed up early in his Opening Day start against the Houston Astros , giving up four earned runs in two frames before settling in and pitching five innings. The Yankees came back to win, 5-4. After Cortes was finished, injured ace Gerrit Cole pulled the lefty aside in the dugout to discuss his start. Cole, who YES Network’s Michael Kay referred to as the “Yankees’ extra pitching coach” during the broadcast, even covered his mouth at points in case any TV cameras were catching the conversation.

“He has a different view of the game from the pitching coaches because he’s done it for so long,” Cortes said. “He’s more about in-game insights than game planning. Maybe he’ll see something during a first at-bat or a second at-bat — what can you do to make it better now or to face the guy better a third time around?”

Cole coaching Nestor pic.twitter.com/LnGMc0frW4 — Talkin' Yanks (@TalkinYanks) March 28, 2024

It was just the first of many instances this season in which Cole has helped guide the Yankees not from the mound, but from anywhere his voice can be heard.

“I enjoy sharing the blessing,” Cole said, “sharing the wealth of information that I’ve been given and I like to see my teammates succeed.”

He’s done it again and again.

“That’s who he is,” manager Aaron Boone said.

Cole won’t be able to pitch for the Yankees until at least May 28. The 33-year-old is on the 60-day injured list, recovering from right elbow nerve inflammation and edema. It’s the first major injury of an 11-year career that has seen him make 30 or more starts in seven of the last nine seasons (he made all 12 of his starts in the 2020 pandemic-shortened season). His 2023 American League Cy Young Award victory, six other top-10 Cy Young finishes and career 3.17 ERA in 300 starts have him on what could be a Hall of Fame trajectory.

But ask Carlos Rodón . Ask Marcus Stroman . Ask Clarke Schmidt and just about anyone on the Yankees’ pitching staff.

Cole has found so many ways to help the Yankees even when he hasn’t been able to throw a single pitch.

“Every time we have a game, we have 2 1/2 hours that we have to lock in and hopefully we’re doing something to contribute to that,” he said.

When Stroman threw his first bullpen session as a member of the Yankees this spring, Cole watched from behind the mound. Not long after, Stroman said he grabbed his phone and found a welcome surprise — a “long text” from Cole with “his assessment” of how Stroman performed.

On a quiet afternoon in February, a mostly empty Yankees clubhouse — save for Cole and Rodón — opened to media. The lockermates were engaged in an intense discussion on the intricacies of throwing a cutter, a pitch Cole had added to his arsenal in recent years and one that Rodón had been looking to learn as he works to add a third pitch to his vaunted fastball-slider combination.

And there’s hardly a day that Schmidt doesn’t pick Cole’s brain as he tries to live up to his promise as a 2017 first-round pick. Schmidt credits Cole for helping him with everything except tying his cleats. Cole has coached Schmidt on how to remain poised on the mound in tense spots, how to read swings, how to spot a hitter’s gameplay against him and so much more.

“I feel like I’ve learned more in the past year than I ever have in my career,” Schmidt said of being around Cole.

Through the Yankees’ first 12 games, they’ve gone 10-2, and pitching has been a big reason. Their 2.48 ERA is second-best in the majors. Their starting pitchers have a 2.52 ERA, the third-best in the game. A rotation missing Cole, its biggest weapon, has hardly faltered, and Cole’s presence has made a big impact.

“It’s amazing when you have the best pitcher in baseball kind of serving as your hype man and a coach when you come back to the dugout,” Stroman said.

For Cole, it all goes back to 2013. Back then, he was a 22-year-old rookie in a rotation with 36-year-old A.J. Burnett, who helped the Yankees win their last World Series in 2009; 29-year-old Charlie Morton and 29-year-old Francisco Liriano. The team went 94-80, finishing second in the National League Central before falling to the St. Louis Cardinals in the Division Series. Cole, promoted to the majors in June, went 10-7 with a 3.22 ERA in 19 starts and went 1-1 in the Division Series.

As the Pirates leaned on Cole, he leaned on the veterans around him, especially Burnett and Ryan Vogelsong, who spent 2016 with Pittsburgh.

“Those two guys fostered that culture that served me very well over the years,” he said. “I find that whether some of those conversations result in a moral victory, guys being able to get through something out there or some advice that actually is advantageous for us and increases performance — that’s ultimately what we’re trying to do.”

Sometimes, Cole will go home and rewatch that day’s starting pitcher’s outing and either shoot them a text later that night or have notes for them the next day. Sometimes, he’ll lean over the dugout railing and live vicariously through the pitcher on the mound, talking with the other pitchers around him about what pitch might come next and why. Stroman is a big believer in breathwork — particularly controlling his breathing between pitches — and was heartened to hear Cole talk about the same things.

“When you’re talking with him, it gives you more confidence,” Stroman said. “It’s almost like, I knew I felt like that, and I knew I was doing that, but when he gives you confirmation, you feel really ready to rock.”

Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake is in awe of what he called Cole’s “care factor.”

“For someone who is as talented as he is and for the status he has,” Blake said, “he doesn’t need to do it. He understands the value of what good clubhouses look like and how important it is to bring guys along.”

A week ago during a 6-5 win in Arizona, Rodón escaped the first inning scoreless despite a runner reaching third base. When he returned to the dugout, Cole sought out Rodón. Holding a black plastic coffee stirrer in one hand, Cole looked like a maestro leading an orchestra, gesturing to discuss the movement of one of Rodón’s breaking balls. Rodón nodded along in agreement.

“I’ll take any insight from a guy like that any day,” Rodón said.

For Cortes, it goes back even longer. In 2022 — smack in the middle of Cortes’ breakout All-Star season — Cole meant so much to Cortes as a mentor. Cole had taken the time to dissect Cortes’ starts with him. He would pull him aside mid-game and offer tips. He had given him encouragement in the clubhouse or on red-eye flights between series.

So, Cortes offered Cole the ultimate compliment.

“Something I respect about you,” he told Cole, “is that you’re making so much money and you’re still acting like you’re not.”

Cole didn’t have much to say back, offering a polite thank you. In 2019, Cole signed a $324 million, nine-year contract with the Yankees — the most lucrative deal ever signed by a pitcher at the time.

Meanwhile, Cortes didn’t have the easiest time making ends meet for a while in his career. He pitched in various winter leagues for extra cash all the way up until 2021. Cortes said he thought that Cole didn’t seem bothered by the compliment, or even surprised that he brought it up.

“He’s making a ton of money and he’s still there, on the front lines with the guys,” Cortes said. “He could easily just cash it in and not care about other people’s careers. But something I respect about him is that he does make it his problem to make you better.”

Except Cole doesn’t see it as a problem. He loves it.

“I don’t plan on changing anything,” he said.
