Manado City Tour — Explore the Capital of North Sulawesi

Our tour through Manado City takes you past all kinds of intriguing sites in North Sulawesi’s capital. Manado is home to around 450,000 people, and is one of Sulawesi’s bigger cities, second in size to the capital Makassar in the south of the large island.

Preparing for the Manado City Tour

The tour is a great way to get a sense of the local life . The best way to do so is a mix of walking as well as using public transport. This is why you need decent shoes. Bring Rp300,000 (around €17) for a souvenir and/or lunch. Also, prepare to be greeted by complete strangers who will excitedly talk to you!

Manado & Religion

Known as the City of 1001 Churches, North Sulawesi and Manado comprise of primarily Protestant Christians, with a mix of Muslims, Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus, and other denominations. Over the course of the years, Manado gained a bit of a reputation as an exemple for peaceful coexistence, something many other nations can aspire to.

Starting the Tour

From the resort, our driver will take us by car to the satellite town of Tuminting , only a few kilometers from Manado proper. In fact, you can already notice how much busier the traffic becomes at this point.

Our driver drops us off, and we hail a Mikrolet , or Mikro . These little blue buses are Manado’s premier mode of public transport, with single ride costing Rp6,000 per person. Gingerly they wobble their way to and from the city, often emblazoned with colorful custom paint or sticker work. In addition, music will play from their sound systems to attract customers, which is exactly what our bus of choice is doing.

Loud music music notwithstanding, we’re all having a laugh as our driver turns up the bass even more!

Ban Hing Kiong Temple

Finally, we reach the city center. We get off the mikro , pay our fare and visit our first stop: the impressive Buddhist temple called Ban Hing Kiong .

Besides being one of the oldest temples in Manado City, it’s also one of four Buddhist temples within a single square kilometer. This is quite remarkable for a predominantly Christian area of Indonesia. Its lavish entrance takes us to a space of meditation and prayer, with the smell of incense in the air. As is customary, we take off our shoes (even if the property caretakers tell us it’s ok to leave them on!).

We go upstairs to the top floor, and we’re rewarded with a nice view of the busy street below. On this floor a few artifacts from the colonial time are on display: three cannons from the 18th century overlook the street. One of them even has “VOC” (the Dutch East India Company ) inscribed on it.

Next, we go by foot through the old city center. Our next destination is Jalan Roda : a covered street that was made into a hawker center. Jalan Roda means “Wheel Street”, acquiring its name from the many food carts that you find here.

It is now around 10:00 in the morning, and it’s getting warm as a result. We sit down at a little cafe and order a refreshing ice coffee. It’s very busy here, so this is certainly the perfect place for some people-watching. Subsequently, the people are watching us of course. Some folks will try to strike up a conversation, asking you where you’re from, for instance.

There is a lot of activity. For example: men play chess or dominoes, people are eating lunch and exchanging gossip. Meanwhile, live music is playing, although sometimes people can be found singing karaoke.

Presiden & Pasar 45

We’re enjoying the moment, and we finish our refreshments to get ready for the next leg of our tour.

We leave Jalan Roda behind and move further into the old city. The old center is called Pasar 45 (’45 Market). However we will be taking a slight detour through the Presiden building.

The Presiden Building was actually one of Manado’s earliest malls before it fell into disrepair. Now it is home to a bustling little textile market with family-owned sweatshops.

Here, people sew garments for all kinds of professions, such as for civil servants, teachers and uniforms for school kids. This place is always full of atmosphere. The lighting and the colors of the different fabrics make for some rather great photo ops!

Seamstresses go about their business making tailor-fit suits on old sewing machines. Indeed, some of these could have come straight from your grandmothers day!

Next, we walk past all kind of shops in Pasar 45. Many people take delight in seeing you, greeting you with open smiles. The positive energy is palpable. This is the first time where you’re really noticing how friendly people are in Manado. And I can assure you that you’re 100% safe in Manado: you don’t need to fear pick pockets or people trying to scam you.

Sentrum Church & World War 2 Monument

We continue through winding streets over questionable pavement, proceeding to Manado’s oldest church called Sentrum .

This protestant church has been an institution for centuries. Its current building stems from 1990, which makes it the oldest church in the area. The caretaker is always friendly and gladly opens the doors. We go inside and it’s immediately apparent how everything has a nineties vibe to it.

Hand-crafted confessional benches line the hall. On the main podium the old church bell from 1933 is sitting lonely and broken in a corner.

The inscription mentions its Dutch origin, one of the Manado’s last remnants of its colonial history.

We go back outside, and next to the church we find a towering abstract monument built in early brutalist style. Erected in 1947, it honors the victims of the war in the Pacific, where Japanese forces completely took over enormous areas of land in South East Asia. As a more sobering part of the tour, we reflect on the senselessness and creulty of war.

Where to next?

It’s 12:00, and we finish the formal part of the tour. We’re free to go wherever we choose to. We can do some shopping at the Megamall or Manado Town Square, or maybe visit a souvenir shop, for instance. In addition, we could go for a stroll along the waterfront.

It’s also time to think about lunch. So either we can go back to the resort, or we sit down at one of Manado’s many restaurants for a nice meal. Of course we choose the last option!

Finally, content with a delicious lunch, we call an online taxi that brings us back to the resort.

City Sight & Culinary Adventure

This private tour is set up for those that are interested in city sightseeing, walking tours, and culinary adventure combined. Manado is the provincial capital of North Sulawesi, so-called a Land of the Smiling People because the local people here are well-known for the warm hospitality as well as for the mouth-watering cuisine. Located in a bay, Manado has many delicious seafood choices. In this tour, we are gonna see and experience how typical local people live their daily life. We start with eat breakfast as local, Tinutuan Porridge and some additional foods for breakfast. Once a thriving colonial trade town issuing streams of aromatic spices through the channels of the Dutch East India Company, Manado on the far-flung northern tip of Indonesian Sulawesi now figures as one of the country’s more charming provincial capitals. While the city centre has a typically Southeast Asian urban affair—laden with holes-in-the-wall touting piping dishes of Manadonese fish rice and criss-crossed by bustling streets of mikrolet buses—it does do well to conceal a smattering of Chinese Qing temples, the odd colonial townhouse as well as traditional wooden Minahasa houses concentrated more on the countryside.  But, as any Manado tour guide will tell you, this one’s major pulls lurk on its peripheries; bubbling up from the Sulawesian hills in Bukit Kasih to the south, lurking in the misty lowland rainforests of the Tangkoko Nature Reserve, or waiting on the various hiking trails that wind their way along the ridges of the colossal Mahawu Volcano. The biggest draw of them all is by far the underwater life at Bunaken National Marine Park and its crystal-clear waters that makes Manado is a veritable mecca for scuba divers.

ITENERARY: DAY 01 : ARRIVAL + MANADO CITY TOUR (D) Upon your arrival at Sam Ratulangi Airport, meeting services then transfer to Manado visiting Ban Hin Khiong Temple at Kampung Cina, continuing the trip to the Second World War Monument located in the center of Manado city, passing through Manado shopping center at Business on Boulevard (B on B) area. Check in hotel and stay overnight.

Day 02 : MINAHASA HIGHLAND TOUR (B,L,D) You may spend your day for Minahasan cultures and scenery from the highland place. Start from your hotel visiting the highest Jesus Statue in Asia, “Monumen Yesus Memberkati” that residing in the Citraland Housing Area, Tinoor spot, you can enjoy the beauty of Manado from the high. Tomohon city, a windy and cool city famous for its flowers, volcanoes and the smiling people. Tomohon traditional wet market, selling vegetables, traditional food of Minahasan such as wild pig, Dog, mice even snake. Temboan hilltop, if not cloudy you can enjoy the fantastic panorama of line of vegetables, farms, Bitung port and Tondano Lake with rice field surroundings. Lunch at Tondano Lake. After Lunch visiting Pulutan village the producers of clay potteries made in traditional way. Visiting Linow Lake in Lahendong the sulfuric and sunshine, Woloan village; this village made Minahasan traditional wooden house. In the afternoon, we will go back to Manado and directly go to hotel. Dinner and stay overnight.

Day 03 : BUNAKEN SIGHTSEEING + SHOPPING (B,L,D) After breakfast transfer to Manado bay and then travel by boat to Bunaken Island, it will take around 45 minutes from Manado bay. Transfer to catamaran (boat glass) to enjoy the most beautiful and colorful coral reef formation as well as thousand species of fish and others marine life. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant in Bunaken. Souvenir hunting or Snorkeling at Bunaken Island (optional tour) to see the beauty of Bunaken National Park directly. In the afternoon back to Manado. Dinner will be served at a seafood restaurant in Kalasey.

Day 04 : SHOPPING + DEPARTURE (B) After breakfast and check out hotel, we will pick you up to the Merciful Building; where you can find souvenir as well the Minahasa Food such as Pala sweets and syrup, sago cookie, klaper kuk, klaper tart, smoked tuna, rica roa, etc. Transfer to Sam Ratulangi Airport to catch your flight to Next Destination.

Bookings: • Reservation order have to be sent in writing` by E-mail, Fax or Letter and must be include itinerary, date of arrival / departure, flight detail, type of facility of services, number of person, rooming list (for group) and guide needed. • Reservation should be made as earlier as possible. (Earlier reservation will be confirmed earlier).

Late Bookings: Bookings may be accepted up to 7days prior to a tour departure but will be subject to availability of accommodation, flight and may be subject to the payment.

Single Supplement: Must be paid when single traveler have been chosen.

Deposit & Final Payment A deposit of 30% from the total package price is required at the time of your booking. The balance of your tour price completing full payment must reach Adventurindo no later than 30 days prior to the commenced of your tour. If for any reason your balance payment is not received by us by the due date, as set out above, we reserve the right to treat your booking as cancelled and apply the appropriate cancellation changes.

Manado is the capital and commercial center, the main gateway to north Sulawesi province. Furthermore, the land structure shows the morphology of wavy slopes and hills in the northern and central parts of the city. The Southern comprises the mountain foot of volcanoes in central Minahasa. Thus, the Minahasa district is the hinterland of Manado and possesses some of the most fertile soils in Indonesia. DAY 01: Arrival – Manado City Tour (D)

Welcome to Manado. Firstly, you will be greeted by your tour guide/driver cum guide on arrival at Sam Ratulangi International Airport. After the meeting service, visit Ring Road Area on Citra Land to see closer The Amaze Tower, the Biggest Jesus Blessing Statue in Asia. Then, go to Manado Down Town for City Tour, passing China Town, Ban Hin Kiong Temple, TKB (Taman Kesatuan Bangsa), Zero Point, then the Government Area of North Sulawesi on Jl. 17 Agustus. In the afternoon, go to the Boulevard Area for a culinary tour enjoying Fried Banana Sauce of Roa Fish. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant in Manado. Lastly, check in the hotel, a free program.

Day 02 : Bunaken - Manado (B,L,D)

After breakfast at the hotel, we will start visiting Marina Harbour. When arriving at Marina Harbour, use a speedboat/glass bottom boat to Bunaken Island. It takes 45 minutes and 20 minutes for sightseeing at the beautiful Marine Park of Bunaken. After the sightseeing tour, go to Bunaken land. Free Program for Snorkeling / Diving. We provide boats for free (Snorkeling Equipment Guide Snorkeling: Optional). Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. At noon, back to Manado. Hence, free reflexology (30 minutes). Day 03 : Minahasa Highland (B,L,D)

After breakfast at the hotel, drive to Tinoor Highland with its panorama (Manado City, Manado Bay, and Bunaken Island as the background). Next destination to Tomohon, a windy and cool city famous for its flowers; volcano Woloan where the people make a traditional house of Minahasan; Totemboan Tourism Village with a panoramic of Tondano and Bitung City; Linow Lake, the sulfur and color-changing lake; Japanese caves build during the second world war at Kawangkoan; Pulutan village where the people traditionally make pottery; Tondano lake with its goldfish farming. Back to the hotel to stay overnight.

Day 04: Transfer Airport (B)

Manado city is located at the Bay of Manado, and is surrounded by a mountainous area.

Manado is the largest, most-northerly city in Indonesia, capital of the province of North Sulawesi. It is better known for its breathtaking underwater life at Bunaken, an island that directly faces this city.

But Manado has much more to offer, and you will miss much if you do not explore this part of the Indonesian archipelago. For Manado spells fantastic diving, adventures through the wild and cultural heritage attractions.

In Manado City, there is natural beauty and unique culture of the local community. There are many uniqueness, starting from the village (desa), sub-district (kecamatan), district (kabupaten) and provincial levels.

Most visitors to Manado head straight to Bunaken and the National Park for fantastic diving in pristine waters. Bunaken is famous for its steep drop offs.

The island of  Bunaken is a short  40-minutes trip by boat from the Boulevard. Those who do not dive can still enjoy the colorful  underwater life from glass-bottom boats. There are home stay facilities on the islands for those wishing to stay overnight.

Manado recently hosted the World Ocean Conference, Manado is fast growing into a favorite venue for international meetings and conventions.

Located on a long promontory, Manado is backed by a number of active volcanoes, while facing the open sea.  Its wide Pierre Tendean  Boulevard  bordering the water edge is lined with top class hotels and restaurants serving typical Manado cuisine.

From the Boulevard you can see the perfectly cone-shaped mountain of Manado Tua , which, together with the islands of Bunaken , Mantehage, Siladen and Nain form the Bunaken-Manado Tua National Park, world famous among divers  for its steep walls and fantastic underwater life.

A deep trench separates this National Park from the city, preventing pollution of the park. Regular ferries take visitors to Bunaken.

Behind Manado are a number of active volcanoes called Lokon, Soputan, and Dua Saudara whose lush green tropical terrain are ideal for trekking, eco-tours, bird watching and white water rafting.

The  Tangkoko National Park is habitat to the world’s smallest monkeys called tarsiers, cute little animals with saucer-large eyes.  And all around you will see coconut trees and plantations.

For the region of Minahasa is also known as the land of the waving coconut trees or ”Nyiur melambai”.

The majority population being Christians and Catholics, you will find Manado dotted with churches. Christmas is a particular good time to visit when the city and the surrounding hills come alight with Christmas decorations. A huge statue of Jesus Christ rises above the city, blessing its inhabitants.

There is also a sizable Chinese population here, so that Chinese New Year and Cap Goh Meh festivities are held in grand scale, especially around Chinatown and the  Ban Hin Kiong Temple.

Manado’s cuisine is particularly tasty. Try the rice porridge, called  Bubur Manado , and the fresh seafood served with cut green tomatoes and special chili sauce.

Many of Manado’s cuisine are cooked in bamboo tubes, then baked over an open fire, giving it that particular zesty taste. Do not miss  “klappertaart”,  a special cake filled with large slivers of fresh young coconut.

Walking around the town of Manado you will find churches almost around every corner. This area is predominantly Christian. During the Dutch colonial times, the Minahasa region was one of the best educated in the East Indies.

The first protestant church built here by the Dutch is the Gereja Centrum, once known as the Oude Kerk , or the Old Church . In front of the Chruch is a World War II monument.

Asia’s largest statue of Jesus Blessing  is located at the Citraland residential estate and can be seen from most parts of Manado.  With a 20 meter high pedestal base, the 31 meter statue in white stone shows Jesus Christ rising off the pedestal at a 20 degrees angle, stretching out his arms to bless the city.

This is the second largest statue of Jesus Christ in the world after the one in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Manado is a melting pot of many different ethnic groups and religions.   Wander around the popular China town and admire the Ban Hin Kiong temple, built some 335 years ago during the Qing dynasty.

Every February colorful Toa Peh Kong ceremonies are held here as are Chinese New Year celebrations. Further into the countryside, you will find rows of traditional Minahasa houses which are raised from the ground, and are made of wood.

To enter the house there is a short staircase to its front or on both sides of the house. Neat flower plots surround the houses, give the neighborhood a distinctly European atmosphere.

Today, custom-made wooden houses can be ordered at the village of Woloan, not far from the Manado city.  These houses may be disassembled and shipped  to any location in the world.

Manado has recently undergone frantic development in preparation of the World Ocean Conference in May ,  followed by the Sail Bunaken in August 2009.

Five star hotels, a brand new convention hall with attached  18 hole golf course, and mega malls have been added to the city to host the more than 7,000 delegates that included a number of heads of state.

The road from the airport to the city has been considerably widened, and the Boulevard by the water edge spruced up.

Today Manado is a thriving city and prides on a number of brand new malls, like the Mega Mall, the Manado Town Square and the Boulevard, all along the Piere Tendean Boulevard.

Going up the highlands, make a stop at the at the village Sawangan to see the Waruga megalithic sarcophagi heritage park, where are 144 ancient stone graves dating to the 16th century  peculiar to this region.

Then continue to visit Tomohon , the city of flowers where annually the Tomohon Flower Festival is held. Tomohon is a cool mountain resort, where a number of religious institutions have their seminaries.

Nearby is  the Bukit Kasih, the Hill of Love, a place of worship and meditation for Catholics and all Christian denominations. There are also a mosque and a Hindu temple.

When in Tomohon, take time to visit the market, where all kinds of meats are sold, from chicken,  beef, venison and pork, to other local delicacies, like bats, field mice, dogs and monkeys.

Take time to visit Lake Linow at the village of Lahendong near Tomohon. The lake changes colours from red to green or blue, best seen around 3.0 pm  when the sun shines directly on the lake.  This is a place for relaxing and taking in the beauty of nature.

Further up the mountain, passing clove and vanilla plantations lies Lake Tondano situated at 600 meters above sea level. This is a beautiful, large crater lake where visitors can watch fishermen at work, or waterski at Remboken.

Nearby is the village of Pulutan where you can buy pottery and ceramics, and visit traditional houses at Paleloan.

If you wish to see the tarsiers in their habitat, then trekking through the Tangkoko-Batuangus National Park is the answer. The Park is situated north of the harbor of Bitung.

Located at the foot of the “Dua Saudara” or Two brothers volcano, the area offers impressive views of hills and valleys. Here you will see a number of tarsiers- the world’s smallest monkeys, that are as small as a fistful. These are shy animals.

Tangkoko is also home to the black macaques, maleo birds and hornbills.  Tangkoko is also ideal for birdwatching. The road to the Park is now well paved so that travel is easy by car or van. There are cottages and small restaurants near the Park.

If you are into mountain climbing, the  climb the active Mt.  Mahawu. The climb to this beautiful  crater takes an easy one hour walk  where you will have a spectacular panoramic view on the Bay of Manado , Mount Klabat,  the Lokon and Soputan volcanoes and the Maluku Sea.

Climbing the active Lokon volcano takes two hours. The trail is more difficult as it requires walking over slippery rocks of a river bed before reaching the crater. On the return journey, enjoy a relaxing hot thermal bath at Ranopaso.

The Minahasa highlands also offer exciting, adrenaline pumping white water rafting. A number of Adventure operators offer rafting along different rivers.

Nearest to Manado is  the Sawangan river, starting at the village of Timbular, some 27 km. from Manado, pass  the flower city of Tomohon.   Other rivers to raft are the Nimanga river and the Ranoyapo.

Accessibility

The journey to Manado City is now very easy. We can enter through various modes of transportation.

The condition of the infrastructure is getting better. Starting from highways, airports, trails, ports, bridges, stairs, even some places can be reached by toll roads.

Access to go to Manado City:

There are daily flights to Manado from Jakarta , Surabaya , Bali , Makassar , Papua and Balikpapan .  Airlines flying to Manado include Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air.

The Sam Ratulangi International Airport of Manado is able to receive wide-bodied aircrafts. SilkAir was the  first international airline that flew Singapore-Manado directly. The airline now serves Singapore- Manado four times weekly.

There are taxis available, which are best taken from the hotels. The “mikrolet” mini buses are your best bet. They have fixed routes and are not as crowded and are better organized compared to those in Jakarta.

We can visit by plane, car, ship, bus, motorcycle and bicycle. At some point, we can take the train. We can also walk freely.

In Manado City, as technology getting better. We can easily find locations for mini markets, shops (warung kedai), ATMs, Bank BRI BCA BNI Mandiri, BTPN Bank Nagari BJB, supermarkets, and restaurants. So we will not starve or lack the necessary items.

Manado City Tour — Explore the Capital of North Sulawesi

Our tour through Manado City takes you past all kinds of intriguing sites in North Sulawesi’s capital. Manado is home to around 450,000 people, and is one of Sulawesi’s bigger cities, second in size to the capital Makassar in the south of the large island.

Preparing for the Manado City Tour

The tour is a great way to get a sense of the local life . The best way to do so is a mix of walking as well as using public transport. This is why you need decent shoes. Bring Rp300,000 (around €17) for a souvenir and/or lunch. Also, prepare to be greeted by complete strangers who will excitedly talk to you!

Manado & Religion

Known as the City of 1001 Churches, North Sulawesi and Manado comprise of primarily Protestant Christians, with a mix of Muslims, Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus, and other denominations. Over the course of the years, Manado gained a bit of a reputation as an exemple for peaceful coexistence, something many other nations can aspire to.

Starting the Tour

From the resort, our driver will take us by car to the satellite town of Tuminting , only a few kilometers from Manado proper. In fact, you can already notice how much busier the traffic becomes at this point.

Our driver drops us off, and we hail a Mikrolet , or Mikro . These little blue buses are Manado’s premier mode of public transport, with single ride costing Rp6,000 per person. Gingerly they wobble their way to and from the city, often emblazoned with colorful custom paint or sticker work. In addition, music will play from their sound systems to attract customers, which is exactly what our bus of choice is doing.

Loud music music notwithstanding, we’re all having a laugh as our driver turns up the bass even more!

Ban Hing Kiong Temple

Finally, we reach the city center. We get off the mikro , pay our fare and visit our first stop: the impressive Buddhist temple called Ban Hing Kiong .

Besides being one of the oldest temples in Manado City, it’s also one of four Buddhist temples within a single square kilometer. This is quite remarkable for a predominantly Christian area of Indonesia. Its lavish entrance takes us to a space of meditation and prayer, with the smell of incense in the air. As is customary, we take off our shoes (even if the property caretakers tell us it’s ok to leave them on!).

We go upstairs to the top floor, and we’re rewarded with a nice view of the busy street below. On this floor a few artifacts from the colonial time are on display: three cannons from the 18th century overlook the street. One of them even has « VOC » (the Dutch East India Company ) inscribed on it.

Next, we go by foot through the old city center. Our next destination is Jalan Roda : a covered street that was made into a hawker center. Jalan Roda means « Wheel Street », acquiring its name from the many food carts that you find here.

It is now around 10:00 in the morning, and it’s getting warm as a result. We sit down at a little cafe and order a refreshing ice coffee. It’s very busy here, so this is certainly the perfect place for some people-watching. Subsequently, the people are watching us of course. Some folks will try to strike up a conversation, asking you where you’re from, for instance.

There is a lot of activity. For example: men play chess or dominoes, people are eating lunch and exchanging gossip. Meanwhile, live music is playing, although sometimes people can be found singing karaoke.

Presiden & Pasar 45

We’re enjoying the moment, and we finish our refreshments to get ready for the next leg of our tour.

We leave Jalan Roda behind and move further into the old city. The old center is called Pasar 45 (’45 Market). However we will be taking a slight detour through the Presiden building.

The Presiden Building was actually one of Manado’s earliest malls before it fell into disrepair. Now it is home to a bustling little textile market with family-owned sweatshops.

Here, people sew garments for all kinds of professions, such as for civil servants, teachers and uniforms for school kids. This place is always full of atmosphere. The lighting and the colors of the different fabrics make for some rather great photo ops!

Seamstresses go about their business making tailor-fit suits on old sewing machines. Indeed, some of these could have come straight from your grandmothers day!

Next, we walk past all kind of shops in Pasar 45. Many people take delight in seeing you, greeting you with open smiles. The positive energy is palpable. This is the first time where you’re really noticing how friendly people are in Manado. And I can assure you that you’re 100% safe in Manado: you don’t need to fear pick pockets or people trying to scam you.

Sentrum Church & World War 2 Monument

We continue through winding streets over questionable pavement, proceeding to Manado’s oldest church called Sentrum .

This protestant church has been an institution for centuries. Its current building stems from 1990, which makes it the oldest church in the area. The caretaker is always friendly and gladly opens the doors. We go inside and it’s immediately apparent how everything has a nineties vibe to it.

Hand-crafted confessional benches line the hall. On the main podium the old church bell from 1933 is sitting lonely and broken in a corner.

The inscription mentions its Dutch origin, one of the Manado’s last remnants of its colonial history.

We go back outside, and next to the church we find a towering abstract monument built in early brutalist style. Erected in 1947, it honors the victims of the war in the Pacific, where Japanese forces completely took over enormous areas of land in South East Asia. As a more sobering part of the tour, we reflect on the senselessness and creulty of war.

Where to next?

It’s 12:00, and we finish the formal part of the tour. We’re free to go wherever we choose to. We can do some shopping at the Megamall or Manado Town Square, or maybe visit a souvenir shop, for instance. In addition, we could go for a stroll along the waterfront.

It’s also time to think about lunch. So either we can go back to the resort, or we sit down at one of Manado’s many restaurants for a nice meal. Of course we choose the last option!

Finally, content with a delicious lunch, we call an online taxi that brings us back to the resort.

Babirusa Endemic Tour – Nantu Forest, Gorontalo

Gorontalo is located on the island of Sulawesi in eastern Indonesia and is tucked in the calm waters of the northern shoreline of the Tomini Bay, on the southern fringe of Sulawesi’s protective northern arm. Here the weather is balmy and equatorial.

The local inhabitants are from Gorontalo ethnic backgrounds with their own traditional language. Being the main gateway to the diving area of the Togean Islands, Gorontalo can be reached by a 1 hour flight from Manado or an 9 hour scenic drive. You would be surprised by what Gorontalo has to offer in its forests with its endemic fauna as well as the unique diving of the Togian Islands.

Nantu Forest

Nantu Forest is located in the heart of the Wallacea region in Gorontalo Province. Wallacea is the wildlife transition zone between Asia and Australia named after its founder, Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), a famous British biologist, naturalist, and anthropologist. Nantu Forest consists of Nantu Wildlife Reserve (33,023 ha), Protected Forest (19,606 ha) and Production Forest (10,002 ha).

The forest is very important for the ecosystem benefits it provides. A community of approximately 30,000 people live within the Nantu and Paguyaman river watershed and is completely dependent on these rivers for its water supply. Nantu’s carbon content is invaluable. If the forests were cleared, up to 50 million tonnes of CO2 could be released to the atmosphere. Nantu Forest is famous because it is the only place in the world to reliably see its other endemic inhabitants: the Babyrousa celebensis .

The babirusas, also called deer-pig (Indonesian: babirusa ) are a genus, Babyrousa, in the swine family found in Wallacea, or specifically the Indonesian islands of Sulawesi, Togian, Sula and Buru. All members of this genus were considered part of a single species until 2002 as the babirusa ( Babyrousa babyrussa ), but following the split into several species, this scientific name is restricted to the Buru babirusa from Buru and Sula islands, whereas the best-known species, the North Sulawesi babirusa, is named Babyrousa celebensis. The remarkable “prehistoric” appearance of these mammals is largely due to the prominent upwards incurving canine tusks of the males, which actually pierce the flesh in the snout.

The North Sulawesi babirusa ( Babyrousa celebensis ) has a head-and-body length of 85–110 cm (33–43 in) and weighs up to 100 kg (220 lb). It is virtually hairless (easily revealing its greyish skin), and the tail-tuft is also nearly hairless. In males, the relatively long and thick upper canines are strongly curved. They emerge through the roof of the snout, while the long lower canines emerge through the side of the mouth. The upper canines can grow backwards in a curve until they penetrate the skull of the male babirusa. In females, the canines are far shorter and typically do not protrude. In comparison, the Buru babirusa has relatively long, thick body hair, a well-developed tail-tuft, and relatively short and slender upper canines in males, while the Togian babirusa is larger, has a relatively well-developed tail-tuft, and the upper canines of the male are “short, slender, rotated forwards, and always converge”

The common and scientific names are various transcriptions of its local name, which literally translated means “deer-pig” (from Indonesian babi “pig” + rusa “deer” – see also Javan Rusa) in reference to the huge tusks of the male suggestive of a deer’s antlers.

Day 01:  manado – gorontalo   (l, d).

Pick up from city hotel at 08.00 and depart to Gorontalo by a private car (the trip will be approximately 9-10 hours). Along the trip you can enjoy the scenery. Lunch will be served at a restaurant on the way about halfway to Gorontalo. Check into hotel in Gorontalo and dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 02:  Gorontalo – Adudu Nantu Forest   (B, L, D)

After breakfast (starts at 7 AM ) check out 8 AM and continue to Nantu (the trip will take approximately 4 hours). Lunch box will be provided or stop at a local restaurant and we will continue the trip to Nantu. Lodging will be a homestay in the village with dinner. (Option- go in for ½ day if time allows – extra charge applies)

Day 03: Deer-Pig Observation, Babirusa (Babyroussa celebensis)    (B, L, D)

Breakfast at the homestay. Depart 7 AM sharp, trekking to Nantu Forest (40 minute walk from homestay) to the ranger station (check-in) and then another 20 minutes to the “hide” observation point. Lunch at the camping ground/ranger station, then in the afternoon back again to the forest for another viewing. Lodging will be a homestay in the village with dinner.

Day 04: Deer-Pig Observation, Babirusa   (B, L, D)

Breakfast at the homestay. Depart 7 AM sharp, trekking to Nantu Forest (40 minute walk from homestay) to the ranger station (check-in) and then another 20 minutes to the “hide” observation point. Lunch at the camping ground/ranger station, then in the afternoon back again to the forest for another viewing and stay until approximately 3 PM. Trek back to homestay, shower and then drive to Gorontalo , four hours (arriving in Gorontalo around 9 PM). Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 05: Gorontalo – Manado  (B, L)

After breakfast, check out and drive back to Manado (the trip will take approximately 9-10 hours). Lunch at a local restaurant. Drop to airport or next resort location. End of services.

Before she takes her final bow of the Celebration Tour concert series in April 2024, Madonna will have performed 52 shows across 27 cities in the US, Canada, and Mexico. While many dates earlier in the tour were available for under $100, these final dates will cost you at least $245 at the time of writing. Still, it's a few grand cheaper than the Swifties have been paying this year.

Madonna's 2024 tour began with the international leg in Europe, so the only remaining concerts in The Celebration Tour outside the United States are in Mexico.

In April, she'll have five performances in Mexico City, where she'll take her final bow of The Celebration Tour on April 26.
