Run from Manulife

I was shopping around for travel Insurance, Costco offers a discount to card holders via manulife. $85 for a single trip 5million coverage.

I could not get much information regarding the details of the coverage. When I called the first person was friendly but didn't offer much help and offered to send me the policy which I already had.

I called back and got another rep, she was BEYOND rude and annoyed. She kept saying "I dont know what else to tell you, the first person already sent you the policy". She was becoming increasingly annoyed and hostile, raised her voice and started talking over me. So aggressive! Exactly 8pm, she hung up on me.

Don’t trust.

I always try to secure travel or any trip by buying insurance, on my last trip I was offered with all inclusive Manulife insurance for air Canada package and was in Mexico. I slipped and got hurt and was rushed to hospital. Thank God no feature but severe joint injury and dr advise me for a very limited mobility. DR said you can travel by air on wheel chair assistance. I contacted Manulife Global assistance and it was very disappointing to know that they can’t help me get out of Puerto Vallarta, as airline refused to change my date. I stayed on bed for 5 days and all my plan was messed up. This insurance company and service quality is next to none. They never leave any phone number to contact and not even replying. Be careful.

No Complaints

I expected the worse judging by many of the reviews. I had to cancel the trip my wife and I had planned due to a sudden illness. They outlined what documents I needed to supply to them which I did. I could not get a medical certificate for two months waiting to see a specialist but they held the claim open. Once I sent them the final paperwork, the reimbursement was in my bank account within two weeks. I have never had to use my cancellation insurance but it was very straightforward. Thanks Manulife.

I would not recommend them to anyone

Please don’t waste your money. It’s a scam. They are happy to take your money but when you have emergency and open a claim, they will make sure you get nothing. The process is painful and they will do anything to not pay for cover. I’m surprised they are still in this business. Please save your money and time. Find a trusted travel insurance

If I could put -5, I would

In February 2022, I ended up in Ukraine, I had an all-inclusive multi-trip policy from Manulife. In general, my return flight on February 27 was cancelled. I was stuck in a war-torn country with no way to leave there for 3 months. During that time, I repeatedly turned to Monulife for help, although I rarely had such an opportunity due to the lack of communication and the Internet. As a result, after long minutes of waiting, I received another excuse. After returning to Canada, I tried for 6 months to get at least some kind of compensation, but in the end I gave up this activity, as each time I experienced a negative experience. In general, I was not reimbursed for anything.

POOR SERVICE

These people are quick to take your money and avoid payment of claims. It has been almost five months since I filed my claim and to date even after more than twenty follow up calls / numerous emails they still have not paid! Staff memeber are horrible to deal with - no empathy - and claim they are "too busy". You work and save hard to afford a vacation and when you are forced to cancel beacuse your mother dies days before the trip - they take five months to run you around! Unacceptable!

No resolution after two months of inquiry

Manulife representative was not clear in the requirement that each person (husband and wife) must both register for Flight Assist independently on their site. Therefore, when flights were cancelled, only one individual received the refund. Two months later and Manulife representative not rectifying the issue. They make millions of dollars and are refusing to issue $140. Poor service and customer support. Will not use again.

I received $625 so far I am still expected a total of around $3,700 CAD.

I'll need some explaintions. I'll need some explainations.

I was expecting over $3700 because I was hopsitalised in Glasgow (Scotland) for 6 days due to COVID. They were saying in the policy that they reimbursed transportation (plane, taxis, etc, hotels, starting with the days of your hospitalisation) , hotels, etc...

They wrote to me today saying that they were reimboursing me $625.00.

You can be sure that I will call them tomorrow for sure.

UPDATE: Monday January 8th 2024. Without me getting involved at all, I learn this morning that my claim / case has been escalated, that there was an error!

UPDATE: Wednesday January 10th 2024. Manulife sent me an e-mail telling me that there were some dates missing. There is no date missing whatsoever, I was so very careful at checking everything sent numerous times. This would have been my 3rd sending them things, and every single time, I have to send it (due to the confidentiality of the things sent) $16 (CAD). Sorry Manulife, be very careful and check thouroughly things that customers send you before asking them to send them again ! I talked to a guy at the Montréal's office named Philippe, he told me that it was up to the travel agency to pay for (at least) my plane tickets and hotels after my hospitalisation, that the travel agency had to call Manulife to "make arrangements" etc... This is never the case, travel agencies do NOT call insurance companies . NEVER. It is up to insurance companies to deal entirely with claims / cases. So I am not taking care of this new e-mail sent requesting dates, as I just wrote, they have everything. The claim / case could take up to 6 to 8 weeks before I get more money back from them.

They are very communicative when receiving your money, then they disappear when you file a claim

Submitted claim in June, it's now December. Every time I call Global Excel, the claims management department, I'm told, "your case manager will reach out to you" and of course they never do. Most recently I managed to get a firm commitment that "a decision will be reached within 30 days and if not, they will reach out with an update". Of course that was 35 days ago at this point. It really feels like they are hoping I'll forget.

Terrible, terrible experience

I submitted a medical claim in April 2022 and still December 2023 it has not been resolved. After many hours on the phone and on hold, many emails - they Manulife thru Global Excel - send me a letter asking me to submit all the same claim information I sent a year ago, multiple times. They created a new claim number and when I asked an agent she said they will 'move' all my submission documents to the new claim, but they still need me to submit all the same information. It is ridiculous and so frustrating. This is the works company in Canada and if I can give it a negative 10 review I would do it. Avoid Manulife, avoid Global Excel. Bd service, waste of time.

I bought travel insurance for my family…

I bought travel insurance for my family and I, and on day two of my trip we all got the Flu. Racked up almost $1k in doctor’s bills and medication. I had a very helpful representative that explained what I needed to do and opened up a case for us. I ended up getting a check in the mail 4 months later and fully reimbursed. I had my doubts but they really came through. only issue I had was to upload our documents and find where on their site to process everything.

Got a mortgage protection plan through…

Got a mortgage protection plan through them. My initial call was because i moved and needed to change my plan to my new house. Use to be $75 a month for mortgage and life insurance. My mortgage stayed the same but there fee increased to $110 a month without telling me or getting me to sign anything. Crooks and do very illegal stuff. Do not waste your time with them go somewhere else.

I'm totaly disapointed of Manulife pension plan

I'm writing this review because I'm sick of being postponed and asked to provide documents every second week something new to provide. I Have a pension plan with them and I regret it very deeply, when you ask for your own savings to be transferred it is a struggle and a very slow process. Do not put your life savings to them because you may not see them anymore! Avoid Manulife as much as you could!

Unhelpful, condescending, uncooperative and with great effort ensure users do not have access to the services they pay for. DO NOT PURCHASE THEIR PLANS.

I have been waiting for a pension valuation

I have been waiting for a pension valuation since July 2023. My lawyer has sent them money to get the valuation done. Called them again with my lawyer on the same Call because of a court date a week away and they said we have nothing on file of your request. A judge has demanded this value for my next court date in 4 days or my house will be sold!

I took a mortgage protection plan from…

I took a mortgage protection plan from this company. They put an exclusion clause to my coverage which prompted me to cancel it. When i tried to cancel it, twice my call after waiting for 20 minutes each just "dropped" on my third attempt i was able to connect to a very rude Deana which gave me the run around. I would never recommend this company to my worst enemy. Run away if you see this company. Worst policies and worst customer support.

Cannot sign in

Cannot sign in. Ongoing problem. Customer reps no help, except to tell you many other clients are having same problem. Transferring funds to another bank that does not have any of the many problems that Manulife has.

Lousy Customer Service and Slow Process

Manulife used to be good a couple years back for processing their claims. I used to receive a payment within 1-2 days max. Now it was the opposite. I called last week to check the status of my claim and I got the worst customer service ever. She was not only so slow and inexperienced, I was on hold a few times and she was very rude. She insisted that I resend the receipt image in a way that she can read. When I submitted the claim, i know it was aligned in a correct and readable direction, nothing was cut off whatsoever. This experience was unbelievable as it was the first time an agent ever complained and asked me to resend an image. It has been almost a month now since I submitted my claim and I still haven’t receive a payment. I don’t understand why their services have gone down. I find that this is really not fair as many of us are struggling having to pay our bills.

Most cumbersome asinine company

Most cumbersome asinine investment company ever. Did a transfer of my accounts there. So they sent out a "Cheque" to my new institution rather than EFT? Wasting my time. Total transfer to take place 2 months to get it going. The cheque is to arrive and be processed in another 3-4 weeks. Most places take 5-7 business days. Now I'm missing several months of interest I could have been earning.

I was hired by Manulife

I was hired by Manulife, they were not happy with my progress but when you call there, so many agents are not good at their jobs and so so slow and keep asking you the same information over and over again. I just spoke to an agent who was rude and kept telling he is trying to help but he was terrible at his job. I have been doing customer service for 30 years or so and I am so much better and provide good service to my customers than what I have experienced with Manulife. Manulife keeps looking for people continuously because they cannot keep good agents. I would not recommend them to anyone, you are just a number to them and they get rid of you like you do not matter at all!!!!!!

If I could give these clowns -10 stars…

If I could give these clowns -10 stars I would. They have made every claim incredibly difficult to complete. Instead of calling my dentist to get any extra information they want they continually say it is my responsibilty to get them this information which is insane. They have continually tried to reject claims even though it clearly states it is covered in my coverage. I am beyond infuriated with them. My sunlife we had before I had 0 problems with.

in our opinion

in our opinion, worst insurance ever as per the comments of the majority of the people say for health and dental! we felt scammed by this company as they avoid paying our benefits, they have lots of alibis and are not transparent. we know lots of people complaining about how this insurance collects premiums, but as per complaints of most people, the time that they are supposed to pay health spending or extended health care like CPAP, and medical supplies, they AVOID and try to say lots of alibis so NOT to pay the poor patient who bought the medical supplies . The patient is already sick and left with unreimbursed expenses. It was also heard that this is their tactic to avoid paying claims and benefits of people. We also heard that they are worse at handling disability claims. We were told to get our complaints combined with other complainants and file a class suit.

Manulife is the actual worst trash…

Manulife is the actual worst trash ever. The reps are TERRIBLE and do not know anything.. you get transferred between 6 different people and have to answer the identity questions every time just to waste 45 mins of your life to be told they cannot tell you anything. The group benefits they are equally as trash. No email to connect with, they take 1,000 years to process a claim and reimburse you.. or they just deny your claim and tell you you are not covered when in fact you are. TRASH... stay FAR AF away.

This deserves less than a 1 star - Are you legit ?

This deserves less than a 1 star ! I'm getting anxiety dealing with this claim situation which is ongoing since my Nov.28th claim for medical insurance while I was on a trip to the USA. Manulife uses GLOBAL EXCEL as an underwriter and I'm totally getting the run around when it comes to refunding me out of pocket expenses and actually paying the ER hospital in the States. Today is Feb 15th I'm on a call to Manulife Claims department and I keep getting disconnected ???? Interesting don't you think. I've used Manulife TRAVEL insurance for many many years but if they do not hurry up and pay my claim I will not use them again.

Don't buy Manulife Investment Products

Don't buy Manulife Investment Products I invested in Manulife GIF Select Guaranteed Investment Funds for 5 years. The managed the funds very poorly. I got 0% return in over 2 years period. They charged me a huge penalty fee on terminated the plan after 2 years. Their agents are unprofessional and just giving false advise to the people. I recommend to stay away from Manulife.

Manulife has 0 accountability

Going through a separation they hold 2 pension plans for me and they have 100 hoops to jump through and everyone is willing to give you the incorrect information. Make it impossible to access your own money. Wouldn't recommend anyone to invest anything with them if they had a choice I know as soon as i can I will be moving all my money from them. 0 accountability for anyone who serves you with incorrect information Noone cares at all.

Manulife are thieves

Manulife are thieves. I have a drug plan but won't cover drugs. I have prescription glasses but they won't cover prescription glasses! It seems you have to get prior approval before you get anything. It could take months of going back and forth with them to find out if a particular drug is covered, if the drug is out of stock that they normally paid you may have to pay out of pocket because no other drug is listed in their invisible list. I also bought glasses from a optician but was refused payment because because it was not on their list of approved locations. Stay away from manulife ......I am shopping for a new provider.

Horrible customer service

Horrible customer service. Their commitment is to claim processing within 7 business days. Claims processing is now taking 2-3 months. They deny the claim or request for additional information and that processing then takes another 2-3 months. You can also send in a product to verify if covered under your plan. Then you buy the product and submit the claim then you are informed that the product is not covered. Apparently orthotics is covered once every 3 years but nowhere is that stated online or in the plan contract with my employer. Manulife refuses to update this information to verify the coverage for orthotics. Customer service gives conflicting information. Some questions cannot be responded to after 4 pm. They request you submit prescription receipt information online. Submit correct information then they ask to submit a copy of the receipt. What not give the option to submit the receipt in the first place. Wish my employer would find another insurance company.

Frequently asked questions

For the best experience, please use up-to-date versions of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge when purchasing Insurance for Costco members.

Global Affairs Canada states: "Do not rely on your provincial or territorial health plan to cover costs if you get sick or are injured while abroad. Out-of-country health care can be costly, and your government health plan may not cover any medical expenses abroad. It is your responsibility to seek information from your provincial or territorial health authority and to obtain supplementary travel insurance and understand the terms of your policy."

You can opt to purchase coverage for the entire time you are away from your province of residence or just for the portion of your trip that is away from Canada. In other words, the effective date of coverage can be either the last day you are in your province of residence or the last day you are in Canada. As government health insurance plans vary among the provinces and may not provide emergency return home benefits, you should consider coverage for the full length of your trip.

Government health insurance plans may have limits on the reimbursement of the emergency medical expenses incurred while in another province. For example, air and ground ambulance costs, emergency dental treatment and prescription drugs might not be covered outside your province of residence. For maximum protection, you should purchase additional medical coverage even while travelling within Canada.

Yes. Travel Insurance for Costco Members allows top up coverage of another insurer's plan. You are responsible for ensuring that your current coverage is in force and allows top-up. Your top-up coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of the Travel Insurance plan.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your existing plan permits top-ups.

If you are already on your trip, you can extend coverage by calling Customer Service at 1-866-707-4922 provided there has been no event that has resulted or may result in a claim against the policy and there has been no change in your health status. In addition, you must request the extension before your coverage expires and pay the appropriate premium. Extension of your coverage is subject to approval.

If you have a Multi-Trip Plan, you must top-up your coverage before you leave home, by purchasing a Top-Up plan for the additional number of days beyond the duration provided by your Multi-Trip Plan to the maximum allowed by your Canadian government health insurance plan. To top-up your coverage after you leave home, you must call us at 1-866-707-4922 .

You may purchase Travel insurance for Students. This plan has been designed for students, including post-graduate researchers.

Yes, grandchildren fall under our definition of a "child" but the dependent grandchild must be named on your confirmation and be travelling with you, and you must pay the premium for Family Coverage. All travellers covered under a family policy must be under 60 years of age.

Best travel insurance in Canada

Day Of Victory Studio / Shutterstock

You’ve packed your bags, mapped your itinerary, and set your “out of office” message – it’s vacation time! But what about travel insurance?

According to a 2019 study by the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada, 13% of Canadians aren’t sure if they have travel insurance before they go on vacation. Of those who have bought insurance, 17% don’t know what their policy covers.

As a professional travel writer, I find this rather alarming. Canadian health insurance is not valid outside Canada, and your provincial or territorial health plan may not cover all the costs even if you’re travelling domestically. If you suffer an accident or get sick abroad, unexpected medical bills can bankrupt you. It’s why the Canadian government  advises all travellers to buy travel insurance , and I never leave the country without it. Whether you’re taking a two-week trip or a gap year abroad, every one needs the best travel insurance in Canada, regardless of age, health status, destination, or length of vacation.

Best for thrill seekers: World Nomads

Designed for adrenaline lovers with wanderlust, World Nomads insures a long list of adventure sports, activities and volunteer/work experiences, as well as sporting equipment delay/loss/theft. You also get access to a 24/7 hotline that provides information that adventure travellers may need: weather reports and travel advisories, assistance locating the nearest trail, and finding a gear shop.

The standard policy covers emergency medical expenses up to $5 million, emergency dental, trip cancellation/interruption/delay, baggage delays/theft/damage, and more. The downside: you must be under 66 years of age to qualify.

Best for families: CAA Travel Insurance

A long-trusted Canadian institution, CAA travel Insurance offers flexible travel plans to suit every type of traveller and vacation, but their policies are particularly great for families. Their stand-alone emergency medical policy of up to $5 million in health coverage is extremely comprehensive, even including medical repatriation, emergency dental, and reimbursements for pet care and kenneling.

The Vacation Package Plan provides full cancellation/interruption insurance – ideal for prepaid, all-inclusive vacation packages – as well as family transportation and escort of children during emergencies. Anyone can buy CAA travel insurance, but members get a 10% discount.

CAA’s emergency medical plans also now include coverage for COVID-19-related illnesses for vaccinated customers. Coverage is up to $2.5 million if partially vaccinated and up to $5 million if fully vaccinated.

Best for seniors and retirees: Blue Cross

Blue Cross has been around for more than 70 years, and 1 in 4 Canadians utilize its travel insurance. Blue Cross’s emergency medical covers up to $5 million. It has special “snowbird” travel insurance packages designed for Canadians who head to warmer climates each year, making Blue Cross ideal for retirees.

Part of the package is the recently launched Serenity Service. This free perk provides a range of benefits if your flight is delayed, including access to an airport lounge or even a hotel room (depending on the length of the delay). Pre-existing conditions are generally not covered.

Best for budget travellers: Travel CUTS Bon Voyage Insurance

Starting at only $1.36 a day, Travel CUTS Bon Voyage Insurance offers very affordable travel insurance packages, and it’s personally been my “go-to” travel policy for years. Yes, it’s geared toward students (e.g., you can swap your travel dates at no charge due to an exam schedule conflict), but anyone between 15 and 50 years of age can purchase a policy.

The standard package includes hospital and medical up to $1 million, dental care, air ambulance evacuation, flight accident, accidental death or dismemberment, and trip interruption/cancellation insurance. Adventure and extreme sports are also covered.

Best for Canadians with pre-existing medical conditions: Manulife CoverMe

Manulife CoverMe offers highly comprehensive Canadian travel insurance packages for those travelling as a family, a visitor to Canada, or a student. You also get access to the TravelAid mobile app, which provides directions to the nearest medical facility and local emergency telephone numbers.

However, the stand-out feature is arguably TravelEase – a special policy designed to cover fully disclosed medical conditions. For travellers with pre-existing conditions, it insures a bunch of expenses for health services and transportation. It provides up to $10 million in emergency medical benefits – a unicorn in the travel insurance world.

Best for emergency medical assistance: Medipac Travel Insurance

Medipac is one of the only travel insurance companies out there that is staffed by their own team of trained medical professionals, via their Medipac Assistance hotline. Medipac’s medical professionals are your first point of contact in an emergency medical situation. This service is also helpful for dealing with foreign medical systems and helping to prevent unnecessary expenses when dealing with a large deductible.

Medipac offers several competitive features for their travel insurance plans, including no age limits, a claim-free discount, and a 90-day stability period for most pre-existing conditions. If your pre-existing medical condition isn’t covered by a standard Medipac insurance plan, Medipac also offers personalized, underwritten insurance policies to help you meet your needs.

Medipac is offering a 5% Vaccine Discount to clients who have received a minimum of one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, as well as the new MedipacMAX option. This COVID insurance option provides maximum coverage of up to $5 million USD for COVID-19, in addition to its other benefits.

Best for frequent travellers: Allianz Travel Insurance

Touted as a world leader in the Canadian travel insurance and assistance industry, Allianz Travel Insurance is a major provider of travel insurance, corporate assistance, and concierge services. It seeks to help its customers find solutions to various travel-related problems. Allianz Travel has partnered with many reputable companies, including travel agencies, airlines, resorts, websites, event ticket brokers, corporations, universities and credit card companies.

Allianz Travel Insurance is a great choice for anyone looking for travel insurance. Its single-trip plans are perfect for those leaving home and visiting another destination (or destinations) before going back home. Its parent company, Allianz Global Assistance, has five plans to choose from, all offering different levels of protection and coverage.

Allianz Travel Insurance’s annual/multi-trip plans are perfect for both personal and professional travelers who take multiple trips in a year. It offers four distinct options to choose from.

Will my provincial insurance be valid overseas?

No! If you get sick or injured overseas, the Canadian government will not cough up a dime to cover your medical costs. Here are the sobering facts:

  • Canadian public health insurance is not valid outside of Canada.
  • Foreign hospitals can be extremely expensive and may demand payment before treating you.
  • The Canadian government will not pay a Canadian’s medical bills for an illness or accident suffered abroad. You’re on the hook for footing the bill!

Will my provincial insurance work in another province/territory?

Flash your valid provincial health card in another part of Canada, and you’ll likely be covered for some of the same services insured by your home provincial plan. This is because the provinces and territories (except Quebec) signed an agreement whereby the host province foots the bill for any medically necessary health care services and gets reimbursed by the home province later.

However, that doesn’t mean you’re completely out of the woods. Depending on your destination, a slew of other services may not be covered, such as an ambulance, hospital transfer, prescription drugs, transportation back to your home province, and procedures not currently approved by your home plan.

Plus, since Quebec wasn’t a signatory to the interprovincial billing agreement, you’ll likely be charged for any medical bills incurred there. For this reason, it’s recommended that you buy extra travel insurance (or verify your  credit card’s travel insurance coverage ) to cover any uninsured health care services that may crop up during your trip.

What does the best travel insurance in Canada cover?

Every travel insurance policy is different and what’s covered depends on how much you’re willing to pay for coverage. Typical medical services that you can expect to be covered include:

  • Emergency hospital and medical costs
  • Ambulance and air ambulance costs
  • Outpatient services
  • Physician and laboratory costs
  • Prescription drugs
  • Direct payment to the hospitals and doctors caring for you
  • Assistance with bringing a family member to your bedside
  • Air ambulance or commercial repatriation home
  • Return of your vehicle if you are ill and have to come home

Additional benefits may include:

  • Trip cancellation for non-refundable monetary losses
  • Trip interruption
  • Baggage loss, rental car damage, out-of-pocket expenses
  • Accidental death and dismemberment

How much coverage do I need?

Securing a policy with a minimum of $1M maximum payable is a safe bet. But don’t just look at the numbers when choosing a policy – read the fine print. Every insurer has a list of situations in which coverage is not provided, otherwise known as “exclusions.” Check whether your provider includes coverage or has provisions for the following:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions: According to the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers, a pre-existing condition is “something that happened (or started to happen) before you were insured.” Some policies may cover claims relating to pre-existing conditions that are “stable and controlled,” but read the definitions carefully. If you don’t declare a condition, the entire policy could be invalidated!
  • Medical evacuation: Ensure the policy covers medical evacuation to the nearest hospital and/or to Canada and the costs of a medical escort to accompany you to your final destination.
  • Repatriation in case of death: On the grim side, ensure that your plan covers the preparation and return of your remains to Canada.
  • Adventurous Activities: If you plan on engaging in “high-risk” activities on your trip, you may need to shell out extra dough for a more comprehensive plan. Many policies don’t cover “risky” activities, such as skiing or snowboarding “out of bounds,” skydiving, scuba diving, white-water rafting, mountaineering, or participation in any rodeo activity. To cover your bases, ask questions and get specifics before purchasing a policy.

You may have to pay more to have these things included, but a few extra bucks may be worth it for peace of mind.

Should I buy “a la carte” travel insurance or get a travel credit card with free insurance?

A credit card with travel insurance is always a good thing to carry in your wallet. The  best travel credit cards in Canada  usually cover everything from emergency medical costs to trip cancellation/interruption to flight delay to rental car insurance, which could save you a wad of cash.

The  Scotiabank Gold American Express ® Card  has saved my butt a few times, and I’ve filed several travel-related claims through my card. I cancelled my trip to Portugal a few years ago due to a death in the family, and I got a full refund on my hotel deposit and flights for myself, my husband, and my baby. It totally justified the $120 annual fee.

That being said, don’t rely on your credit card to take care of all your travel insurance needs. It usually includes a basic policy, meaning it offers low (or no!) travel medical insurance as part of the package. Like any travel insurance company policy, you’ve really got to read the fine print and understand the conditions of your policy to avoid sticky situations.

For instance, the Scotiabank Gold American Express ® Card requires a cardholder to have charged at least 75% of trip expenses to make a trip cancellation/interruption insurance claim. So if you book an all-inclusive vacation for $5,000 and then cancel due to illness, at least $3,750 must have been charged onto your AMEX to qualify for a claim. If you didn’t do that, you’re out of luck.

Can I still purchase insurance if i’ve already started my vacation?

The short answer: most insurance providers won’t cover you after your departure date. However, a handful of insurers (such as World Nomads) will allow you to purchase a policy while already overseas. Just know that it can come with sky-high costs and/or conditions: World Nomads has a 48-hour waiting period before coverage kicks in. The bottom line? It’s always best to buy travel insurance before leaving the country.

Can I get travel insurance for part of a trip?

Some plans offer insurance coverage options that will allow you to customize your coverage, but you’ll have to research to find one that works for your unique circumstances. Alternatively, you could take out an insurance policy for each destination and/or segment of your trip.

For instance, you could get a World Nomads policy for the two weeks you’re scuba diving in Australia, followed by a basic Travel CUTS Bon Voyage insurance to cover a month-long trip to Europe. However, when you buy Canadian travel insurance, you must select a trip start and end date – meaning you must know the exact dates for travelling to those places.

Should I carry a printout of my policy with me at all times?

I recommend carrying the travel insurance card in your wallet and locking it up in the hotel safe with other important travel documents like my passport. But don’t rely totally on paper: Wallets get lost or stolen, luggage can be delayed or M.I.A., and papers are easy to misplace when you’re on the road. My advice is to send a copy of the policy to your email and save it on your iCloud or another storage system that can be accessed anywhere, anytime.

AXA Assistance USA is among the best travel insurance companies . It covers the fundamentals of travel insurance, with coverage for trip cancellations, medical expenses, and emergency medical/non-medical evacuation. With three plans, AXA also offers coverage for travelers with various budgets.

It's worth noting that many important add-ons aren't available for AXA's cheapest Silver plan, such as pre-existing condition coverage, rental car add-ons, and Schengen travel insurance. Cancel for any reason coverage is also only available for AXA's most expensive Platinum plan.

Coverage Options Offered by AXA

AXA Assistance USA offers three levels of coverage: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each plan comes with different protections and varying coverage limits, with the Silver being the most basic option and Platinum offering the most premium coverage.

Some policies might even include added coverage free of charge, such as a waiver for pre-existing conditions , which is free for Gold and Platinum plans as long as you purchase your plan within 14 days of your trip deposit.

Specialized Coverage Options

The plan you purchase will determine which add-ons are available. For example, those with a Platinum plan can add CFAR (cancel for any reason) coverage , allowing you to receive a full refund if you cancel your trip within 14 days of making the initial deposit.

Or, if you want extra protection for your rental car, depending on your AXA plan, you might be able to add a collision damage waiver (CDW). Policyholders with Gold plans can add $35,000 CDW, and those with Platinum plans can include $50,000 CDW.

If you're traveling within the Schengen Territory, which is made up of 27 European countries, you may eligible for Schengen Travel Insurance, which covers you in all 27 countries. This option is only available for Gold and Platinum travelers and coverage lasts up to 90 days.

AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for the plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate AXA's coverage costs.

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following  AXA travel insurance quotes:

  • AXA Silver: $83
  • AXA Gold: $107
  • AXA Platinum: $127

Premiums for AXA plans are between 2.7% and 4.2% of the trip's cost, well below the average cost of travel insurance. It's also relatively cheap compared to many of its competitors

AXA provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • AXA Silver: $109
  • AXA Gold: $128
  • AXA Platinum: $153

Once again, premiums forAXA plans are between 3.6% and 3.8%, below the average cost for travel insurance.

A 65-year-old couple looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following AXA quotes:

  • AXA Silver: $392
  • AXA Gold: $462
  • AXA Platinum: $550

Premiums for AXA plans are between 6.5% and 9.2%, which is roughly in line with the average cost for travel insurance. This is to be expected, as travel insurance is often more expensive for older travelers.

How to Purchase and Manage Your AXA Policy

The process of purchasing an AXA policy is simple. After obtaining your quote, you'll need to decide which of AXA's three plans you want to buy. When you pay for your plan, be prepared to provide additional personal information, like your birthday, phone number, and address.

Once you finalize your purchase, you'll have a 10-day free look period, in which you can cancel your policy and get your money back.

How to File a Claim with AXA Travel Insurance

To file a claim with AXA Assistance USA, head to the claims forms online to find the appropriate form. Once you've filled out your form and gathered the required documentation, you can email them to [email protected] or send them by mail to:

If you need assistance when filing claims, AXA's claims office can be reached at 1-888-957-5015 (within the U.S.) and 1-727-450-8794 (outside the U.S.). Office hours are 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. ET on Thursdays and 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. ET on all other weekdays.

AXA's U.S. branch has few reviews on Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau — just over 20 between the two sites. Its UK branch has over 1,100 reviews, most of which are overwhelmingly negative. However, the quality of AXA Travel Insurance UK isn't necessarily indicative of its U.S. coverage.

In fact, on SquareMouth, where the majority of AXA U.S.'s reviews, reviews are generally positive. It received an average of 4.22 stars out of five across over 900 reviews. Customers reported that adjusting an AXA policy was easy and the customer service team was responsive. However, reviews on the claims process was more mixed, with spotty communication and long wait times.

AXA Assistance USA vs. AIG Travel Guard

When comparing AXA to Travel Guard , we'll look at the coverage levels from their mid-tier plans, the Silver plan and Travel Guard Preferred plan, respectively.

With Travel Guard Preferred plan, you'll get:

  • Trip cancellation coverage up to $150,000
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $225,000
  • Emergency medical coverage of $50,000
  • Coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000
  • Travel delay coverage of up to $800

Comparing those Travel Guard coverages with AXA's Silver plan, you'll see that AXA's coverage limits are a bit higher. With AXA's Silver plan you'll get $100,000 in emergency medical coverage, for example. And the baggage loss coverage limit is up to $1,500.

If you're looking for greater coverage limits, AXA makes the most sense in this scenario. But premiums will also vary based on factors like the traveler's age, trip destination, and trip cost. So you'll have to run your own numbers to make a final decision.

AXA Assistance USA vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz Travel Insurance provides single-trip and multi-trip insurance for travelers who want to go abroad for an extended period of time. And, like with all insurance, the various plans have varying degrees of coverage.

Allianz Travel Insurance's most popular single-trip option is the OneTrip Prime plan, which offers:

  • Trip cancellation coverage up to $100,000
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $150,000
  • Emergency medical coverage for $50,000
  • Coverage for baggage loss, theft or damage up to $1,000
  • Travel delay coverage up to $800

Looking at AXA's mid-tier Silver plan, you'll see that, again, AXA offers more coverage for emergency medical and baggage loss, theft, or damage than Allianz Travel Insurance. That said, if cost is an essential factor for you, you'll have to get quotes using your personal trip information to make an informed decision.

AXA Assistance USA vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

Already have a great travel credit card, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or American Express Platinum? Some of the standard coverages, such as rental car insurance, may be included in the card you already have. It's a good idea to research the terms of your credit card's travel protection before purchasing a separate travel insurance policy.

If you're driving to your destination and don't have any non-refundable trip expenses, the coverage from your credit card may be enough. Another time it might work is if you have health insurance covering you while abroad and you're in good health without worrying about possible medical costs.

It's essential to remember that credit card coverage is usually secondary. This means you'll have to file a claim with the other applicable insurance before filing a claim with your credit card company.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed AXA Assistance USA

We researched AXA by evaluating its travel insurance plans compared to other plans from the top travel insurance companies. The aspects we looked at included, but were not limited to, different coverage options, claims limits, what is covered, available add-ons, and extra services for policy holders.

What's important when choosing a policy isn't just the price — it's making sure you're getting adequate coverage that meets your needs without breaking the bank. Filing a claim should also be easy and stress-free if you ever have to use your policy.

AXA Assistance USA FAQs

If you're diagnosed with COVID-19 before a trip and need to cancel, AXA may cover your expenses. Additionally, a COVID-19 diagnosis during a trip may be covered under AXA's medical expense, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits. Be sure to review your policy to ensure coverage details.

While you may extend your coverage in certain circumstances, such as extended hospitalization, and update your travel dates prior to your departure, you can't extend AXA travel insurance plans while you're traveling.

AXA's Gold and Platinum plan cover pre-existing medical conditions as long as you purchase your policy within 14 days of your initial trip deposit. AXA's Silver plan does not cover pre-existing conditions and has a 60-day look-back period.

You can download AXA claims forms on its website and email them to [email protected].

AXA isn't the most flexible travel insurance company and isn't great at specializing, but it offers comprehensive general coverage. Its prices aren't significantly more expensive or cheaper than its competitors.
