Meg Mac interview

Heather Gildroy

Meg Mac has had quite the year. Her third studio album, Matter of Time , finally brought the singer-songwriter her first chart-topping ARIA album. With her first two albums coming tantalisingly close to the top spot, it makes Meg’s new album title feel positively premonitory.

It could all have went a lot differently. While preparing Matter of Time , Meg grew disillusioned with the collection of songs she’d made, and bravely threw them out entirely.

She decided to move to a secluded cottage in rural New South Wales, seeking space and time to make her third album properly (in a recent interview with Rolling Stone AU/NZ , Fazerdaze discussed similarly taking her time between album releases, waiting until she was in a healthy mindset to make the music she really wanted to make; more artists would do well to follow her and Meg’s example).

In that NSW cottage, things eventually came together for Meg. Upon release, Matter of Time was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2022 J Awards; it was hailed as a “grand statement” in Rolling Stone AU/NZ ‘s review.

Following a successful supporting slot for fellow vocal powerhouse Jacob Banks in the Northern Hemisphere, Meg has celebrated being back on home soil with the release of Live At Golden Retriever , a special 5-track EP of select songs from Matter of Time .

Recorded at the titular Marrickville studio alongside her live band prior to the release of her album, the EP captures Meg’s voice at its potent best.

Ahead of the release of Live At Golden Retriever , Rolling Stone AU/NZ spoke with Meg about her huge year and her new EP, as well as looking forward to her 2023 Australian and New Zealand tour .

Meg Mac’s Live At Golden Retriever is out now.

RS AU/NZ: First of all, congratulations on Matter of Time reaching the top of the ARIA Albums Chart. How did it feel to get your first number one? It must be a dream come true.

Meg Mac: Thank you! It was a bit emotional to be honest. I already knew I’d made the right decision to start the album again but this just made it a little sweeter.

So you threw out a full album of material before making Matter of Time ? Were your team and confidants anxious about this decision?

I was so scared to tell my label and everyone that had worked on the album. I’d built it up in my head to be this giant problem so I left it to the last second when it was honestly almost too late. I regret that because when I found the courage to tell my team, no one cared or questioned me once.

What was wrong with that album of material? Were you just not feeling the songs?

I think the best way to explain it would be that I wasn’t in a good place when I was making it and so I think you can hear that.  It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t right. I felt sick when I would think about it and when the first single was about to come out I finally snapped. The moment that song was pulled I felt a wave of relief.

Did any songs survive the cut?

One song made it – funny that it ended up being the title of the album, “Matter of Time”. If you listen to the lyrics it’s like this spooky premonition about what was going to happen.

So you moved to the NSW countryside to make Matter of Time ? Was being surrounded by nature a huge influence?

I call it my great escape, running away from my troubles. For whatever reason I needed to feel like I was far away from everyone and in my own little world to figure everything out. Now I’m back in the city and it seems like a weird dream that we actually moved there.

Which other artists and singers influenced the sound of the album? Who were you listening to a lot in your countryside cottage?

I went through this massive Enya phase during the second lockdown. I got so obsessed with how calming and peaceful it was and how she used her voice. You can definitely hear my Enya-inspired BVs I put in all over the place.

I liked this quote you said about the album: “I wanted to just start again and do everything without compromise.” It takes real guts to do that as an artist. Is it difficult to get to that point as a creative person who is also aware that they have a huge expectant fanbase?

You can know it’s right for you but people are going to react and you don’t know if it will be good or bad. At the end of the day I have to feel good about what I’m doing. It was 100% worth the pain to feel good about myself and my music again.

I think it’s notable that the songs on Matter of Time aren’t all just straightforward pop. There’s a lot of different stylistic touches. Was that a conscious effort on the production side?

I love the production on this album. The Donuts were a big part of the sound. We took our time too, months of work went into this going back and forth until we  got it right. They were so creative and brought so much more to the music than I could’ve imagined.

What’s your songwriting process like? Is it a very private thing or do you allow a lot of collaborators to help out?

It always starts as a very private and personal process and once I’ve got my idea that’s when I bring in the right people to help structure it or flesh it out.  Sometimes that’s just production and sometimes more. Kind of depends on the songs and the idea so just have to go with the flow.

What inspired you to make Live At Golden Retriever ?

I’d started putting my band together in Sydney and playing with musicians live again for the first time in years since COVID. I don’t even remember when we  decided to do it, but I was feeling so good and excited that I thought it would be fun! We didn’t use any track and wanted to do record and film it all live in one take with one camera. I wanted it to be real.

Your sister and brother feature on it? That must be a lovely and emotional thing for your family.

It was so nice actually. Hannah is in my band but I haven’t sung with my brother since I was a kid so it was a pretty special opportunity to sing together like this. And no one harmonises better than siblings.

I’ve been asking this to every artist recently: how have you found touring post-pandemic? Responses have been…mixed.

I’m on tour right now and I’m this weird combination of happy and exhausted. It feels good. I’m in Amsterdam right now and I’ve been doing non-stop touring for the last couple of months. It feels so good to be busy and productive – you get into your own head when you spend too much time at home, you have to live in the moment more here.

How did the link up with Jacob Banks – another artist with a huge voice – come about? How has it been being on the road supporting him?

It’s been a dream, I’m so grateful he’s taking me out on this tour. Originally it was just for the US and now I’m on the Euro run too. I got up and did a song with Jacob last night in Rotterdam too, very special.

You’re both such powerful vocal performers: do you often share notes, thoughts, tips on singing?

We are so different backstage, he doesn’t warm up! And I’m the nerd backstage doing my lip bubbles 20 minutes before I go on stage. I love singing and his voice is so powerful, you just get instant goosebumps.

I’m sure every support act is always weary about how they’ll be received, but how have Jacob’s audiences taken to you? Surely quite well considering your sonic similarities?

I think it’s cool to have an opportunity to make a first impression. I’m in these cities I’ve never been to before, some places they don’t speak English, and you can walk out and no one has any idea who you are. There’s some freedom and that doesn’t happen much anymore.

Have you had a favourite venue in North America or Europe so far?

I had so many good shows but there are always your special favourites, just something in the air. Phoenix had that special something for me in the US and in Europe, I’m still in the middle of it but Madrid was a dream. I want to move there.

Are you looking forward to your Australia and New Zealand tour next year? When was the last time you did a national headline tour on this scale?

It’s been a long time actually so I’m a little bit nervous to be honest. I’m doing things different this tour and bringing in some new elements, so I’m getting excited to start pulling the show together when I get home.

What about the future?  Do you have an entire album of music ready to be shelved once again?!

I will NEVER do that again!!! I’ve learned my lesson and if something isn’t feeling right I’ll stop and change direction, I promise.  I’ve started writing and planning a new album, it’s early stages but keeping me inspired.

Meg Mac Talks New Album ‘Matter of Time’: “I Put So Much of Myself Into It”

By Sally McMullen

It takes a lot of nerve to let go and start from scratch, but that’s what Meg Mac did to create her new album Matter Of Time . The first iteration of the Sydney songwriter’s third album was finished and ready for release before the pandemic. However, after realising it wasn’t a true representation of herself, Mac scrapped it and sought a change of scenery.

2020’s lockdowns presented the perfect opportunity for Mac to escape the city and reset amid the open spaces and solitude of rural NSW’s Burrawang. It was here that she dusted off some old demos, reworked some existing tracks and spun her fresh perspective into sonic gold.

Meg Mac – ‘Is It Worth Being Sad’

While sequestered in the countryside cottage, Mac traded WhatsApps and voice demos with co-songwriters like PJ Harding (Lil Nas X, Noah Cyrus, Ruel) and production duo The Donuts (Kendrick Lamar). The final result is a bold, brooding, heartbreaking and candid body of work.

Music Feeds caught up with Meg Mac to chat Matter Of Time , changing up the creative process and the tracks that reignited her love for music.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by MEG MAC (@megmac)

Music Feeds: Matter Of Time has been years in the making. How are you feeling now that you’re finally sharing it with people?

Meg Mac : Yeah, it feels real. Especially when you start answering interview questions, you’re like, “Oh, wow, I did it.” It has been a long time, but in that time I made two albums. It was really scary to make this one. But now that it’s done, I’m like, “I made the right decision,” and I’m so proud of this album. I really, really like it.

MF: You recorded a lot of the album in remote NSW during lockdown. How much do you think the secluded location impacted how the album turned out?

MM: I think it was really important for me to do that. I don’t think running away from your troubles is the best advice, but I think it did work for me. I just had to get out of the situation that led me to where I was at. It was a change of scenery and it was so different and quiet. It was locked down as well, so we were trapped in the house anyway so you may as well be in the countryside.

It was the perfect place for me to reinvent myself and slowly take apart where I’d gone wrong and start to piece together this new album.

MF: It sounds like the ideal conditions to get creative. Would you do it again? Or was seclusion something that you specifically needed for Matter Of Time ?

MM: I would definitely do it again, but maybe go somewhere else overseas. I’d really love to try making an album in person, because a lot of the writing and the creative stuff I was doing here. But when it came to actually recording the album, it was through WhatsApp with people in LA and sending files back and forth and going to Sydney to record vocals and sending them over. So it was a really disjointed process.

I’d love to find the group of people you’re going to make the album with and kind of just stay in one place and make it. That’s a goal of mine.

MF: You mentioned there were some “mistakes” you made on the first iteration of the album. What were some of the mistakes or compromises that you felt like you made?

MM:  Some of the songs [on Matter of Time ] were on the original album that I threw out, but they weren’t right. I would listen to the voice memo of when I wrote the song and I was like, “That’s the feeling that this song needs to have.” But then when I was listening to the fully produced album version, I was like, “That isn’t right.” Somewhere along the way, it had lost the essence of the song. So I think that was the biggest part for me.

I think I was just rushing to make this album. The songs were good – it’s not like I had this terrible album – it just wasn’t right and when I compare it to what I have now, this is so me right now. I put so much of myself into it, and I didn’t have as much of myself in the other version.

Meg Mac – ‘Matter of Time’

MF: The song ‘Matter Of Time’ is one of the songs from the original album that made it to the finished record, right? Did it change much between albums?

MM: That song is pretty much exactly the same. That’s the only one that actually survived the old album and is on the new album kind of untouched. We just did a bit of additional production but didn’t really change it, which is interesting. And then that became the title of the new album. It wasn’t the name of the other album.

It’s so weird when you listen to the lyrics of that song because I’m talking about how I’m not in a great place. I’m like, “I’m about to snap” and “How long will it take?” “It’s only a matter of time before I do something.” And then I was like, oh my god, because then after that I snapped.

I’m singing, “I’ll make it, I’ll make it.” I wanted to make this amazing album. That’s freaky to dissect those lyrics. It’s like this weird, spooky premonition about what was about to happen to me.

MF: ‘Is It Worth Being Sad’ was one of the first new songs you wrote in those 2020 sessions and it came from a writing game with a friend. What was that game and how did it impact the rest of the songwriting process?

MM: We were calling the game, “challenges.” My friend would ring me and we’d make up a rule each for what the song had to be. Then at 5pm, we had to send the idea. And it could be anything you wanted, but it just had to be in those guidelines.

The rules for that day was that it had to be a vocal intro. So I did a loop pedal thing. I just started singing over the top and as soon as I sang, “Tell me is it worth being sad?”, something just went click in my brain.

It sounded different to anything I’d written before. It felt like a path had just opened up into a new direction. From that day on and from that song on, I was like, “I can do this. I can make this album.” I think that there are a few songs on the album that were little challenge songs.

MF: The last track, ‘Head On The Pillow’, is one of my favourite songs on the album. I love how the strings close out the album. What was the significance of signing off with that song?

MM: It was a toss-up between ‘Lifesaver’ and ‘Head On The Pillow’ and I just love the idea of being like, “Head on the pillow, goodnight.” That’s how you end it, with your head on the pillow. That was challenge six that we did. I wrote that on guitar and then put it on piano. I worked with Dylan Nash on that one and he was like, “We should have strings,” and it turned out to be pretty epic.

Meg Mac to Join Jacob Banks on Upcoming Tour Dates

Mac is touring in support of her new album Matter of Time released September 16.

pixeltracker

Meg Mac will Join Jacob Banks as his special guest for the upcoming North American Tour kicking off in San Francisco on September 28th. Mac is touring in support of her new album Matter of Time released September 16. Dates below.

"I wanted to just start again and do everything without compromise," states Meg Mac of the game-changing personal switch-up that led to Matter of Time: the singer's highly anticipated third album, and a record that builds on Mac's award-winning foundations and sends them to new places of clarity and ambition. In early press reviews, 'Matter of Time' has already been praised as "her most compelling body of work yet" and "a grand statement" by Rolling Stone Australia.

With a third album recorded and primed for imminent release at the beginning of 2020, Mac had what she now describes as "a bit of a meltdown". She scrapped its lead single two weeks before release, and with it the rest of the body of work - a bold move towards a creative process without compromise.

Needing some space to regain perspective, Meg moved out to Burrawang, a remote village in the Australian countryside, and began work on Matter of Time. As opposed to her pre-countryside scrapped album, the most important thing this time around would be "to mean every word I sing, to not have anything in the back of my head when I'm singing where I don't totally love it."

The album's title track is the only song that survived the kill of the original album. Written by Meg and co-writer Sam De Jong (Jacob Banks, Muse, Maisie Peters), Matter of Time shows strong evidence of the cracks of confidence that had almost derailed Meg. The track begins with a lament - "I'm not great and I hate that I can't say it" - before swelling into a rich, soaring yearning for solace.

"This song is the only survivor from the album I threw away. It's the most important song on the album and sits right between the old and the new. I find it spooky because everything I wrote came true, it was only a matter of time before I was going to snap. Somehow I knew I was about to reach breaking point and then I did." explains Meg.

As original author of every song on her album, Meg selectively sought co-writing support to refine and heighten her storytelling in writing partners Noah Cyrus' frequent collaborator PJ Harding, the previously mentioned Sam De Jong and with 'Chandelier' co-writer Jesse Shatkin. Behind the desk came production duo The Donuts (Kendrick Lamar, SZA, H.E.R); playing with male vocal choirs, charmingly minimal instruments, and above all focusing in on elements of Mac's vocals that had previously taken a back seat.

You can hear the synergy across the record, from the first single 'Is It Worth Being Sad', the woozy unlikely jam of 'On Your Mind', the breeziness of 'Only Love', and the intimacy of songs like 'Something In The Water' or 'Lifesaver'.

2022 has marked a return to form for the revered Australian singer. The past six months have seen her not only release well received offerings in the album's first four singles - but also a triumphant return to the stage with a sold out national Australian tour which ended in a mesmerizing closing night as part of this year's Vivid Festival at the Sydney Opera House. Mac's shows were described as "A badass masterclass in flexing God-given talent. Meg is professionalism defined.

Meg Mac has created a body of work rich in searing honesty whilst working overtime to find her voice and be satisfied that she has made a record that flourishes without compromise. On Matter of Time, she's finally there. "I needed a switch up to find the love for music again and it worked," she says. "Now for the first time, I really feel in control."

'We Leave Our Egos At The Door': How Nothing But Thieves Harnessed The Light On 'Dead Club City'

Live Review: Meg Mac @ Melbourne Recital Centre

“I made a whole album and ended up throwing it in the bin. So, to be on the 'Matter Of Time' tour here in Melbourne tonight is so special."

meg mac matter of time tour

Ayesha Madon calls for us to shake our asses in our chairs as she catches our attention with her extroverted personality and playful, upbeat tunes. With a musical theatre background, she’s no stranger to performing, however, this is her first ever live tour run, and she shows huge potential to become a household name.

Madon serves up ridiculously good vocal runs comparable to the likes of Ariana Grande, with smooth vocals and effortless whistle notes that hit soaring octaves. She bounces across the stage with undeniably catchy bops with an R&B/pop vibe, including Outside The Party and Goldfish .

Sometimes getting carried away with a stand-up comedy routine, she interacts with the audience with plenty of eccentric banter to keep us engaged. Madon confesses she fell in love during the pandemic and shares a song about falling in and out of love called Justin Timberlake but clarifies she didn’t actually date him, although she wishes. For fans of Hannah Montana, she performs a heartfelt acoustic cover of Miley Cyrus’ The Climb with an impressive vocal delivery.

A ticking clock echoes throughout the recital centre as Meg Mac emerges on a high podium in the centre of the stage in a black sequinned cape. The air fills with smoke and a purple light with a strobe effect as she belts out the title track of her latest album Matter Of Time .

Two backup singers join in by her side, including her little sister Hannah and long-time friend Danielle, as the show continues with older crowd favourites Turning  and Every Lie . Mac removes her cape to reveal a shimmering silver dress that glistens under the incredible lighting display.

“I made a whole album and ended up throwing it in the bin. So, to be on the Matter Of Time tour here in Melbourne tonight is so special," she reveals. Mac continues with her favourite song from her latest album, Something In The Water . The heartfelt song captures the raw honesty and emotion of knowing something wasn’t right at the time she made the decision to start over, and this song is one she’s proud to share.

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

Her booming, soulful vocals blow the audience away. Mac is one of those artists that sounds exactly like her recorded music, if not better live. She takes a moment to share a beautiful acoustic duet with her sister for a song called Don’t You Cry . The special moment celebrates the two performing together since they were kids and now continuing to share the stage on tour. Melbourne is their second home, with memories and connections to the VCA next door.

Mac reveals she’s been using Instagram stories and polls to share and make decisions about her life and about what songs she should play at her live shows. She tells us she asked the audience before the show which triple j Like A Version they wanted her to perform tonight and due to overwhelming demand the crowd voted Let It Happen by Tame Impala. She gives the song a soulful boost with an incredible vocal delivery.

“I always get sad when I release a new album as I have to start saying goodbye to songs because I can’t fit them all in my set,” she tells us. One song that her Instagram followers requested to hear is an old favourite,  Brooklyn Apartment . She dusts off the keys for the song inspired by the lives of the people around her at the time and dedicates it to anyone who has a birthday today.

A song they’ve only played twice as a band, and the last song on the new album,  Head on The Pillow, is a song about drama circling around her when all she wanted to do was escape the world and forget it was happening.

She dedicates the deeply emotional track ( Letter ) to her fans, who she hopes got all the letters she’d spent hours handwriting and kissing every single one of them. “I wrote this song when I should’ve really written a letter to an old friend or someone not in my life anymore. Instead of doing that, I wrote a song about how I should write this letter, and now I’m writing you letters and everyone's letters, except the one person that I should be writing the letter to.”

Clapping strikes up in the room to ring in her beloved cover of Bill Withers’ Grandma’s Hands, followed closely by Never Be, as the audience continues clapping along for the final chorus. She attempts an encore but confesses she gets embarrassed about it, so returns quickly to finish starting with the first song she ever recorded and released called Known Better , which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year since it was first played on triple j. To bring the show to a close, she ends with fan favourite Roll Up Your Sleeves, and Ayesha Madon joins her back on stage for a big singalong finale.

Matter Of Time: How Meg Mac got her mojo back after a career meltdown

A profile of Meg Mac in a tie and suit against a backdrop of mirrors

  • X (formerly Twitter)

It's been a minute, but Matter Of Time marks Meg Mac's return from the biggest challenges of her career with a triumphant collection of songs.

Meg Mac has an incredible voice.

Forceful yet sensitive, it's an expressive instrument that can inspire you with hopeful determination to ' Roll Up Your Sleeves ' or feel a wounded declaration of personal empowerment like ' Give Me My Name Back '.

Hailed as one of Unearthed's best discoveries , her gutsy yet elegant presence has featured on eight Hottest 100 entries in as many years.

But what happens when that big, soulful singing voice loses its sense of purpose?

"I had an album that was going to come out in 2020…" But two weeks before the first single was going to come out, Mac had what she calls "a meltdown… a midlife crisis."

"I freaked out," she explains to triple j. "I snapped, 'I can't put this out! ' I ended up scrapping the whole album."

"I was such a mess and in this weird period, where even my phone going off with an email would just send me into this complete panic."

She retreated from the spotlight to a "cute little cottage" in Burrawang, NSW with her boyfriend and two adopted cats – Billie and Nina – "and started again."

The only song that survived the scrapped record ended up being the title track to  Matter Of Time   - this week's Feature Album and Meg Mac's third full-length - which features some prophetic lyrics.

' How long will it take for my silence to break… It's only a matter of time ' she sings over tasteful trap rolls in her imperious voice. "I'm clearly not okay," the 32-year-old reflects on the song's message.

"I find it really spooky now because everything I wrote in the lyrics came true. I had no idea at the time… I had this desperation to make something better and something amazing. Somehow, I knew I was about to reach breaking point and shit was going to go down. Then all of it happened."

Despite knowing it was the right decision artistically, the Sydneysider with the big voice feared the repercussions of speaking up to her label, management, and the team that had put a lot of money and work into an album she now wanted to toss in the bin.

"I thought ' they're going to be so angry. They're going to make me put it out! ' I was tormenting myself about what everyone was going to say. I think that's why I let it go so far for so long, and only spoke up right before it was meant to come out."

"You know what's so frustrating?" she continues. "It wasn't this giant problem. In my head I thought it was going to be a total disaster and I wouldn't be allowed to do it. But no one cared."

"Everyone said… ' Okay '," she says with the enthusiasm of somebody who's been told that water is wet.

But after getting the blessing to officially reset, Meg then had to figure out how she'd got to the point of not liking what she'd made.

Living the quiet life during her rural retreat, she had the space to revisit old demos and neglected song ideas for inspiration. But the creative dam finally burst and got flowing thanks to a little friendly competition.

"My friend Peter was in Melbourne during all those lockdowns. He invented this songwriting game: He would ring me in the morning and we'd make up a rule," Mac explains.

"Then at 5pm we would have to send the idea. It didn't have to be a finished song, just whatever we had."

"Quite a few songs came from that game," but the most important was lead single 'Is It Worth Being Sad' , born of a rule that the song needed a vocal intro. "So, I did my ' oooh ' vocal loops."

"That was the song I wrote that snapped me out of feeling sad about the past and helped me be able to write the new album."

Musically and lyrically, you can hear her reckoning with running away from her troubles – beginning with haunting harmonies and sombre melodies – and the epiphany that helps her move forward out of her slump.

As the song reaches the point of realisation in the chorus — ' Is it worth being sad about? ' — Meg's triumphant vocal makes the answer a resoundingly clear 'No!'

That sense of renewed purpose and confidence is all over Matter Of Time , and at a lean 34 minutes, it's easily her most consistent and compelling body of work yet.

Her voice soars on 'Something In The Water' and big screen closer 'Head On The Pillow', featuring an anthemic piano-and-strings combination reminiscent of early Coldplay. Elsewhere, she goes full Adele on ' Letter ', a sweeping pop ballad charged with regrets.

Another stand-out is the smoky 'Only Love' , where whispered guitars and restrained rhythms simmer with the "love-hate relationship that I have with music and my life… venting my frustration at it both having to be wonderful and painful."

Like many on the album, the track was produced by The Donuts , the LA-based crew whose Grammy nominated work includes Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and 88rising crewsters Joji, Rich Brian, and Niki.

Working remotely over Whatsapp, Meg credits The Donuts with bringing a new perspective to her sound – capturing some of the vintage flavour of her 2017 debut album Low Blows but with the inventive, modern edge that characterised 2019's mini-LP  Hope .

For example? The radical treatment to the bossy RnB of 'On Your Mind'

"They'd turned my demo upside down. In the chorus, they'd taken out the lead vocal so all you're hearing is the harmonies… that's why it sounds kind of weird but so satisfying at the same time."

"I think this is the weirdest and coolest song out of all of them."

Meg also worked closely with songwriter PJ Harding (Ruel, Noah Cyrus), who produced the raw guitar ballad 'Don't You Cry', and Jesse Shatkin, who co-wrote Sia's 'Chandelier', in a single L.A. studio session that produced 'Understand', an 11th hour addition to the album.

"It was my last day [there], flying home the next night, no expectation but had this idea I'd been working on," says Meg. "Went home and kind of forgot about the song, then Jesse sent it over… out of nowhere we just had this new single."

Even with all those collaborators in the mix, Matter Of Time functions primarily as a showcase for Meg Mac's reinvigorated artistry and talent.

From intimate lullabies to smouldering anthems, she's capable of containing overlapping – even contradictory – emotions in a single performance. And she does it again and again on this album, making for a potent reminder of why she's one of our country's most powerhouse singers.

More significantly, Matter Of Time is a personal triumph, ringing with the authenticity of an artist who risked a lot and learned the hard way the cost of not speaking up.

Meg confronted her crisis of identity and integrity, and came out the other side stronger and smarter for it.

Poetically, one of the album's biggest declarations comes in one of its quietest moments.

'Is it worth all the noise, is it worth all the pain?' Mac wonders aloud on 'Only Love' before answering…

'I would do it again. Oh yes, I'd do it again'.

Matter Of Time  is out now. See Meg Mac on tour around Australia next year between April and May. Dates and details here .

Meg mac – matter of time.

The Australian pop artist breaks down her third studio album track by track.

Meg Mac

Mimicking the thunderous claps of its backing track, the music video for “Understand” seamlessly introduces Meg Mac’s dark and daring approach to tune-crafting. Capturing the pop supremo in the dead of night, the visual shows flashing images of Mac as she voyages to destinations unknown, embracing the sinister figures of the nighttime and opening up a discourse that asks us to seek to “Understand” and give chances before passing judgement onto others.

The ultimate bridge to her third studio album, titled Matter of Time , the single encapsulates the raw beating heart that seeps through Mac’s entire soundscape. And, proving so even more fervently, Mac celebrates the release of the ten-track album by breaking it down single by single.

For the full Matter of Time breakdown, head below now…

“Is It Worth Being Sad”

I had made an entire album I didn’t want to release and had run away to the country to start again, I was terrified. This was the first new song I wrote after months of sadness and getting nowhere. It’s like as soon as I sang that first line I was able to snap out of it and say goodbye to the old album. That’s why it had to be the first single, it was my first step towards believing I could actually do this.

“Only Love”

I’m trying to express my frustration here. I was coming to terms with the love/hate relationship I have with my life. How the source of all my happiness was also the cause of my pain, giving me life while it killed me. I was so lost and had somehow managed to record an entire album that I didn’t believe in. How did that happen. I am meant to love this life.

“Understand”

I thought we had finished the album and I was in America shooting the music video for “Is It Worth Being Sad” and on the last day before I went home I worked with Jesse Shatkin on this idea I had called “Understand”. With no expectations, after the first listen it became a single on the album. I was feeling misunderstood and had this revelation that maybe everyone is misunderstood? I thought that if you put yourself in the shoes of even your worst enemy that maybe you would understand.

“Something In The Water”

I have been waiting so long to record this song and finally it’s having its moment. It was a forgotten voice memo that got lost amongst all the other demos. It’s my favourite song on the album. It’s eerie to listen to now because it’s like I knew that something wasn’t right, there was something in the air, people weren’t who I thought they were and I couldn’t quite figure it out yet.

“Letter”

I think everyone probably has a letter they need to write to someone, we’ve all got some unfinished business. It’s sad to me because I think about the people who aren’t in my life anymore and wish I could reach out and explain. I wonder if I had been able to say what I needed to say would they still be around?

“On Your Mind”

The weirdest and coolest song on the album. I love singing the verses, it’s like I’m chucking a tantrum and it feels so good to just let it out like that. I didn’t really analyse the lyrics as I was writing them but now I’m thinking it’s my bratty moment but it’s also kind of sweet. I LOVE the production on this one, The Donuts transformed this one and turned it upside down.

“Matter of Time”

This song is the only survivor from the album I threw away. It’s the most important song on the album and sits right between the old and the new. I find it spooky because everything I wrote came true, it was only a matter of time before I was going to snap. Somehow I knew I was about to reach breaking point and then I did.

“Don’t You Cry”

I sing this with my sister Hannah on the album. It wasn’t part of the plan but we started playing it live on tour before I’d recorded it (she is in my band) We would sit on the edge of the stage facing each other as we sang and it became this really special moment. Then I had to have her sing it with me just like that on the album.

“Lifesaver”

My rock bottom. My crying on the floor moment. I think that kind of sums this one up, I was so defeated and just praying for a sign. I almost wanted to release the voice memo of me writing this one, it broke my heart when I heard it again. The album version has a little more style though.

“Head on the Pillow”

Sometimes I think if I just rest my head and take a nap that my problems might not be there when I wake up. I wrote this during a time when a notification on my phone would send me into a panic and it was all too much. A simple head on a pillow was my remedy and escape from reality.

MEG MAC ‘MATTER OF TIME’ Album Review

(11th september 2022), review by laura hughes.

Photo – Isaac Brown

“A performance that reminds us why she’s one of Australia’s most powerhouse vocalists.”  – TRIPLE J

“one of the most powerful and arresting performances of her career to date” – rolling stone.

Meg Mac is one of Australia’s powerhouse vocalists, whose third album has been much awaited. With the first version of her album recorded and ready to go, well that was until the singer admitted that she had a bit of meltdown and scrapped the entire record. Meg stated that at the beginning of 2020 all her personal criticisms and professional doubts came closing in on her, resulting in the bold move of scrapping her album entirely, two weeks before the launch may I add.

Meg described that the tipping point for all of this may have stemmed from her older raw voice notes that she recorded, in which she suddenly found them more compelling than her studio finished recorded and readied song. the once overlooked demos for her new album were viewed in a different light, creating the new and breathtaking version of ‘matter of time’., the first track on her album is titled “is it worth being sad” , which begins with a haunting choir humming before meg’s voice enters the scene, the beautiful melody laced with words of a harrowing heartbreak and finding solace in being able to escape from the turbulence of her emotions. the song slowly builds and breaks with its simplistic instrumentation that gives the song a raw edge, which really allows meg’s voice to shine through, and allowing for grittiness of emotions to be displayed across the song for everyone to hear. the song is quite striking in its delivery, with a swirl of emotional high and lows that instantly pulls you in and leaves you wanting more., “only love” picks up the beat with the thrum of the guitar and melodic picked notes. the song has undertones of sadness, questioning the worth of the emotion and the dismal spin that it can have on our lives. the song slowly builds as the realisation that despite the lows, the emotion has incredible highs that can never outweigh the lows that it can bring. the song structure is quite simplistic, giving room for meg’s vocals to fill up the space, with beautiful harmonies and soft background vocals responding to her call..

“Understand” begins with sombre keys with high reverb, Meg’s voice cuts through joining with down-toned melody and lyrics to match right before the song starts to pick up with the rolling of drums which is joined by upbeat keys. Her lyrics are yearning, begging the listener to understand the war that she is fighting inside her head. This song is driven by a more pop like sound compared to her other songs, giving it a lighter tone during the chorus where she wails the words “You will understand | Just give me a chance”, which pulls in the listener into the message she is portraying in the verses. This feels like Meg’s way of calling to her inner self to challenge herself by just giving herself a chance – which may be the album she scrapped in the hopes of finding her voice in this new version.

“something in the water” follows with a slower tempo and an organ humming, bringing us back from the very pop like song before, and creating a ballad piece that allows meg’s voice to really take over the song and showcase how much of a powerhouse she really is, with strong vocal delivery that will send shivers down your spine. the song feels very intimate and gives us a chance to see behind the curtains more into meg emotions; how there is this sense of heaviness that lingers on each line she sings, and how pulled back the song is that leaves room for her vulnerabilities to show., “letter” continues with the simplistic ballad of just meg’s voice and piano. her voice rings throughout the song, laced with heavy regret and deep sadness of heartache. i feel as if this is a song that meg was meant to write, it is a cathartic piece of work with a strong melody and even stronger vocal delivery that instantly pulls you in. the song has a slow build and ends on a high – with the piano ringing loudly in your ears with its beautiful but haunting melodic chords and meg’s voice growing louder, allowing the thick painful emotions to hit you in the face. it is a beautifully candid piece that showcases how well meg has homed in on her writing as an artist., picking up the beat from the strong ballads is “on your mind” , which brings in crisp and staccato guitar chords with pop like atmospheric keys. the song feels like a call out to an old lover who you just cannot quit or get out of your mind. the song has a trancelike sound wafting in and out of it, evoking feels of rejection and wanting. the different sounds that are trickled throughout the piece makes the song feel very dreamy and moody that makes your head sway and want to close your eyes to get the full experience of the song. it is carefully layered and crafted to create a slow build and effortless break throughout the verses and chorus..

“Matter of Time” shifts into a different gear, a song full of dark pop like features and simmering vocals. The song is moodier than the rest, creating a song that is laced with revenge and the feeling that there is something festering below the surface. With lyrics “How long will it take for my silence to break | Cause it’s holding me down while its hands cover both of my eyes” that ring out through the chorus that completely engulfs you in the darkness that lingers throughout the song. The song feels cinematic, with the dark lyrics and moody instrumentation, it brings you into a different world completely.

“don’t cry” strips it right back, with a simple soft melodic thrum of acoustic guitar and backing vocals that complement meg’s soft vocals which drips sweetly like honey throughout the song. the song has a more light-hearted and cheery approach compared to the previous. it still has that feeling of sadness that hangs onto each and every word but does not coat the song entirely in a dismal display but is filled with feelings of witfulness and tenderness., going back to a moodier take is the song “lifesaver” , with sullen piano and a subtle orchestra playing in the background. the song feels like a sirens call to those who are feeling lost and feel like they have no real home to go to. meg spills her guts in this song, all over of her raw emotions saturated in each and every word. the song is so simple and honest; i can feel the hairs standing on the back of my neck throughout the duration of the song. with this song being the shortest one on the album, it goes to show that you don’t always need a lengthy song to display a sucker punch of emotion., “head on the pillow” is the last track on the album which is a beautiful and cheerful song with powerful instrumentation and melody line that ends the album on the high. with stunning violins singing in the background bringing a burst of energy to the song. it is a perfect end to this album as it musically completes every aspect and range of meg mac . it encapsulates hope and the desire for something more and leaves you wondering what else is in store from meg., ‘matter of time’ is a whirlwind of emotions and is a striking collection of songs from meg mac’s newfound love of music and the development of her sound. the album is authentically meg mac and will translate amazingly into her live shows. there is nothing but praises that i can give this album, and that it was very much worth the wait., meg mac matter of time tour aust/nz tour 2023, on sale wednesday september 21 (10am local time), click here for tickets, sat apr 08  – san fran – wellington wed apr 12  – hollywood – auckland fri apr 14  – anita’s theatre – wollongong sat apr 15  – enmore theatre – sydney wed apr 19  – altar – hobart thu apr 27  – melbourne recital centre – melbourne fri apr 28  – wool exchange – geelong thu may 04  – astor theatre – perth thu may 11  – solbar – sunshine coast, meg mac – new album ‘matter of time’ – out now click here to stream/download, meg mac ‘matter of time’ track listing, 01. is it worth being sad 02. only love 03. understand 04. something in the water 05. letter 06. on your mind 07. matter of time 08. don’t you cry 09. lifesaver 10. head on the pillow, follow & listen to meg mac tik tok instagram spotify youtube apple facebook twitter.

“I wanted to just start again and do everything without compromise,” states Meg Mac of the game-changing personal switch-up that led to Matter of Time: the singer’s highly anticipated third album and a record that builds on Mac’s award-winning foundations and sends them to new places of clarity and ambition.

With a third album recorded and primed for imminent release at the beginning of 2020, Mac had what she now describes as “a bit of a meltdown” . She scrapped its lead single two weeks before release, and with it the rest of the body of work – a bold move towards a creative process without compromise.  Needing some space to regain perspective, Mac moved out to Burrawang, a remote village in the NSW countryside, and began work on Matter of Time.

As opposed to her pre-countryside scrapped album, the most important thing this time around would be “to mean every word I sing, to not have anything in the back of my head when I’m singing where I don’t totally love it.”

The album’s title track is the only song that survived the kill of the original album. Written by Mac and co-writer Sam De Jong (Jacob Banks, Muse, Maisie Peters), Matter of Time shows strong evidence of the cracks of confidence that had almost derailed Mac. The track begins with a lament – “I’m not great and I hate that I can’t say it” – before swelling into a rich, soaring yearning for solace.

“This song is the only survivor from the album I threw away. It’s the most important song on the album and sits right between the old and the new. I find it spooky because everything I wrote came true, it was only a matter of time before I was going to snap. Somehow I knew I was about to reach breaking point and then I did.”

Meg Mac announces 2023 Australasian tour

It comes in support of her just-released third album, ‘Matter Of Time’

Meg Mac. Credit: Marc Grimwade/WireImage

To coincide with the release of her third studio album, ‘Matter Of Time’, Meg Mac has announced a nine-date tour of New Zealand and Australia.

The run is due to kick off next April with two Aotearoan dates – Mac will perform at San Fran in Wellington on Saturday April 8, and at Auckland’s Hollywood venue on Wednesday April 12. She’ll start her stateside run in Wollongong that same week, plating Anita’s Theatre on Friday April 14 before taking to Sydney’s Enmore Theatre the following night (April 15).

From there, Mac will jet across the Tasman to perform in Hobart on Wednesday April 19, before returning to the east coast for shows in Melbourne and Geelong. Thursday May 4 will see her perform at the Astor Theatre in Perth, with the tour wrapping up on the Sunshine Coast a week later.

Tickets for all of the shows go on sale at 10am local time next Wednesday (September 21) – find them here for the Wollongong show, and here for everywhere else.

Between now and the tour’s start, Mac’s only scheduled show on local ground is a festival set at the inaugural Harvest Rock  in Adelaide, where she’ll perform on Saturday November 19 alongside Jack White , The Black Crowes , Groove Armada , The Lumineers , Tones And I , Courtney Barnett and more.

‘Matter Of Time’ was released yesterday (September 16) via EMI and Universal. The album – a follow-up to Mac’s 2019 album ‘Hope’ – spawned four singles: ‘Is It Worth Being Sad’ , ‘On Your Mind’ , ‘Only Love’ and ‘Letter’ .

Speaking on her vision for the album in a press release, Mac said: “I wanted to just start again and do everything without compromise”.

Recommended

It’s technically her fourth full-length effort, with the singer-songwriting having scrapped a planned follow-up to ‘Hope’ in the early months of 2020. Noting that she went through “a bit of a meltdown” during that time, Mac said she started over from scratch with the intent “to mean every word I sing [and] to not have anything in the back of my head when I’m singing where I don’t totally love it”.

Ultimately, Mac said of the final product: “I needed a switch up to find the love for music again and it worked,. Now for the first time, I really feel in control.”

Meg Mac’s 2023 ‘Matter Of Time’ tour dates are:

APRIL Saturday 8 – Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington, San Fran Wednesday 12 – Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland, Hollywood Friday 14 – Dharawal Land/Wollongong, Anita’s Theatre Saturday 15 – Warrang/Sydney, Enmore Theatre Wednesday 19 – nipaluna/Hobart, Altar Thursday 27 – Naarm/Melbourne, Recital Centre Friday 28 – Djilang/Geelong, Wool Exchange

Meg Mac Matter of Time

Australian Album Chart: Meg Mac ‘Matter of Time’ Is The No 1 Album

by Gavin Ryan on September 25, 2022

in News , Noise Pro

The third studio album for local artist Meg Mac called “Matter of Time” has taken out the No.1 spot in Australia this week.

“Matter of Time” (EMI Australia) becomes the 958th No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2022), the 809th for ARIA (1983 to 2022), the 593rd to debut at No.1, the 28th chart-topping album for 2022, and the 31st for EMI (since their first in 1981), with all thirteen of the past No.1’s for EMI (direct) being by Australian acts (since January 1993), while their last was with the Birds of Tokyo No.1 set “Human Design” on May 4th, 2020.

This is now the first No.1 Album locally for Meg Mac, who has also now garnered her third successive Top 10 album, as her first set “Low Blows” debuted and peaked at No.2 in July of 2017, while she last charted with her second set “Hope” (HP-9, June 2019). This is also the first time that the word ‘Matter’ has appeared in a No.1 Albums’ title, while it’s the eighth for the word ‘Time’, the last being Gang of Youths in March of 2022 with “angel in realtime”, plus Meg’s third album has also taken out the top spot on the vinyl sales chart this week too.

This new No.1 Album for Meg Mac is also the tenth by an Australian Act to make it to the top during 2022, and after last week’s Parkway Drive at the top, and 5SOS issuing a new album on Friday, it could be a three-weeks run of Aussie artists at the top. Overall this new No.1 album also becomes the 275th No.1 Album by an Australian Act (solo male or female, duo or group), the 153rd by a Solo Female Artist (local or overseas; fifth for 2022), while Meg Mac is also the 132nd Solo Female and the 19th Solo Australian Female Artist to make it to the top.

The tussles for the top spot this week was between local artist Meg Mac and two Asia-based artists in BlackPink and NCT 127, who both see their new albums enter at No.2 and No.3 respectively. BlackPink see their second album “Born Pink” (UK No.1) lands at No.2, the same position their debut set “The Album” entered and peaked at on October 12th, 2020, while the album has now seen two Top 5 singles in “Pink Venom” (TW-19, HP-1) and “Shut Down” which debuts at No.5 this week. The rock-pop all boy group NCT 127 see their new album “2 Baddies – The 4th Album” come in at No.3, becoming their first Top 10 entry and second charted album after “Sticker – The 3rd Album” (HP-16, Sept. 27th, 2021).

Logging a fifth straight week of sitting at No.4 is The Weeknd’s collection “The Highlights”, followed by a second week at No.5 for Harry Styles’ “Harry’ House” (No.13 vinyl), with the rest of the Top 10 made up by only two artists; Luke Combs (future tourist) and Billie Eilish (current tourist). After announcing his tour for August of 2023, last week saw all three of Luke’s album return to the Top 10, where they remain for this week, with his latest album “Growin’ Up” down three spots to No.6, followed by “This One’s for You” (7 to No.8, it’s first ever run of two successive weeks within the Top 10 during it’s 236 weeks on the chart {that’s about 4 and-a-half years}) and “What You See Ain’t Always What You Get”, which also dips three spots to No.9. The other dual artist within the Top 10 is Billie Eilish whose two studio albums climb back into the ten thanks to her current national tour, which will wind up in Perth this coming week. Her second set “Happier Than Ever” is up four spots to No.7 (WI10-15) and her debut release “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” moves up three spots to No.10 (WI10-87).

UP: Ed Sheeran and his “= (equals)” set moves back up a spot to No.1, while Daniel Johns’ former No.1 “FutureNever” rebounds ten places to land back within the Top 20 at No.18. There are six non-movers and six climbing albums within the Top 50 this week, with further climbs being for tourist Billie Eilish and her EP “Don’t Smile at Me” which is back up eighteen spots to No.37 (it’s first Top 50 placement since January 3rd when it was at No.48), while Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” is back up four spots to No.41.

DOWN: Leaving the Top 10 this week are five albums, starting with “SOUR” for Olivia Rodrigo (HP-1×8, WI10-69), which leaves the Top 10 for the first time in it’s 70 week chart-run, plus the album is newly 2x▲Platinum in sales. The four further dropouts all entered the chart and the Top 10 last week, with the new Canadian No.1 Album for Ozzy Osbourne and “Patient Number 9” (HP-2, No.4 vinyl) down twelve spots to No.14, last week’s No.1 entry for Parkway Drive and “Darker Still” falls fourteen places to No.15, the Robbie Williams new redone collection “XXV” (No.3 vinyl) falls eleven spots to No.19, but with him in the country at the moment on a promo tour, playing the AFL Grand Final on Saturday and announcing a 2023 national tour, he should either climb back up one stabilize next week.

Both Eminem collections are within the Top 20 and fall two places each this week, with ‘Curtain Call: The Hits” down to No.17 and “Curtain Call 2” to No.20, followed by falling best of sets for Maroon 5 (20 to No.21), Elton John (27 to No.31) and Foo Fighters (29 to No.39). Beyoncé drops out of the Top 20 for the first time with her “Renaissance (Act 1)” set, down six to No.22, while also dropping six places to No.29 is Harry Styles’ “Fine Line”.

“Look at Me: The Album” for XXXTentacion falls to its lowest position of No.30 this week (LW-25), while Taylor Swift is down to only three albums within the Top 50 this week, “1989” (30 to No.32), “folklore” (stable at No.34) and “Lover” (37 to No.38), after which The Kid Laroi sees his “F**k Love” mixtapes also hit it’s lowest chart spot, down two this week to No.40, while his “Stay” duet partner Justin Bieber leaves the Top 40 for the first time with his “Justice” set, dropping seven places to No.46. The last big drops occur for Kane Brown with “Different Man” (17 to No.48) and leaving from last week’s Top 10 is Marlon Williams’ “My Boy” (HP-10).
