  • Striving for sustainability, the construction excludes metal, and fly ash is utilised to fill the foundation, reducing the carbon footprint.
  • Constructed with 18 lakh bricks and seven lakh man-hours, the temple boasts Nagara-style architecture, similar to the recently inaugurated Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
  • Using 20,000 tonnes of sandstone pieces carved in Rajasthan, the temple's construction involved a significant labour force from Gujarat and Rajasthan.
  • Initiated in 2019, the temple project received land donations from the UAE government, standing as a symbol of Indo-UAE friendship.
  • The BAPS temple, spanning a vast area with stone architecture, is now the largest Hindu temple in the Gulf region.

PM Modi UAE Visit Live Updates: Former Indian Ambassador to UAE, Navdeep Suri, shares insights on the Hindu temple in UAE

  • I think it's a very symbolic day for the Indian community, for the large Indian diaspora that we have in UAE.
  • For many years, it's been a spiritual need, a religious need for them. And I know that in 2015, when the Prime Minister came here for the first time, he put in a request to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, then crown prince of Abu Dhabi, that it would be nice if some land could be granted. And soon thereafter, I came here as an ambassador and started following up on actually getting the land. So we got 13 and a half acres initially, then we got another 13 and a half acres for the parking. We saw step by step how this mandir has come about.
  • But I think as we celebrate the wonderful Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, we celebrate the work, the energy, and the organisation of the Baps Swaminarayan sect in building it. UAE is actually trying to demonstrate through actions its commitment to building interfaith harmony between the many different communities that inhabit this country.

Bilaterals, Hindu temple opening and more: Why Modi's visit to UAE is crucial

Bilaterals, Hindu temple opening and more: Why Modi's visit to UAE is crucial

The next two days are going to be busy for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He is heading to the United Arab Emirates today for two days and will hold bilaterals, boosting cooperation in energy, ports, digital infrastructure and investment flows.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), it is the prime minister’s seventh visit to the UAE since 2015 and the third in the last eight months.

Let’s take a look at the agenda of the PM’s visit and why this visit is significant.

What to expect from PM Modi’s UAE visit

In the UAE, the Prime Minister is expected to hold bilaterals with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice president, prime minister and defence minister of the UAE, inaugurate the grand BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, and meet the diaspora.

The announcement of the Prime Minister’s visit comes soon after UAE president Al Nahyan visited India in September for the G20 Leaders Summit and attended as the Chief Guest at the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in January.

PM Modi has worked towards building stronger ties with the UAE ever since his landmark visit to the West Asian country in August 2015. The two countries are also among each other’s top trading partners with a bilateral trade of about $85 billion in 2022–23, according to official data.

During the visit, PM Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with the UAE president, discussing ways to further deepen, expand, and strengthen the strategic partnership between the countries and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, according to the MEA.

Following the talks, the two sides are likely to ink a number of agreements to shore up cooperation in several key areas. Modi and Al Nahyan are also likely to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The prime minister will also meet with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice president, prime minister, and defence minister of the UAE.

At his invitation, the Indian premier will also participate in the World Government Summit 2024 on Wednesday in Dubai as the guest of honour and deliver a special keynote address at the summit.

PM Modi will inaugurate the BAPS Mandir , the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi.

Modi is also set to give a speech to over 40,000 people today at a stadium event in Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City at an event called “ Alhan Modi ” (Welcome Modi in Arabic). For those who have watched India-UAE ties for the past ten years, this should come as no surprise.

Why the visit is significant

With the latest visit, PM Modi aims to focus on boosting cooperation in areas of energy, ports, fintech, digital infrastructure, railways and investment flows.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, addressing a press conference, said both sides are looking at firming up understandings in areas of ports, logistics, energy security, energy trade and digital domain, among others. He added the two sides are also examining possible cooperation in the areas of maritime heritage as well as fintech products and railways.

“We are also looking to see if we can arrive at an understanding on investments in the field of digital infrastructure, arrangements for the protection and promotion of capital flows,” he said, adding that there may be some understanding for cooperation in the domains of ports and maritime sphere.

“Since digital cooperation between our two economies is an important element of the partnership, we are also looking to see if we can arrive at an understanding on investments in the field of digital infrastructure,” he said.

Kwatra said the two sides are also examining possible cooperation in the areas of maritime heritage as well as on fintech products and railways.

“Currently, the two sides are busy discussing various agreements that could be finalised during the visit,” Kwatra said, adding he was not in a position to share more details.

How India-UAE relations have grown stronger

India-UAE bilateral relationship have strong ties, dating all the way back to 3,000 BC.

According to Moneycontrol , the two countries were a part of the trade trio of Meluha, which many scholars identified as the Indus Valley Civilisation, present-day Indian subcontinent, Magan (Oman and parts of the UAE), and Dilmun (Bahrain and parts of Saudi Arabia). Although evidence of this ancient trade can be found in the discovery of valuable goods and spices in Roman settlements along Egypt’s Red Sea coast, the relationship between the UAE and India has grown since HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan became ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966 and the UAE Federation was founded in 1971.

However, things changed when the IC 184 hijacking happened in December 1999. According to Shishir Gupta’s article in Hindustan Times , when the incident took place, “the Indian ambassador wasn’t even allowed to go into the air base where the hijacked flight was landed before it took off for Kandhar.”

Consequently, the article claims that as soon as PM Modi assumed office in India, he made it a point to establish relations with the Gulf nations.

“The initial forays were made at the level of intelligence officials, at the levels of the national security advisor, at the level of then foreign secretary, S Jaishankar. When we reached out to the UAE, its leaders said very clearly that ‘you have been viewing us from the prism of Pakistan, we look at you bilaterally’. And that is where it all started. Then we started to engaged bilaterally,” the piece noted.

Modi’s visit to the UAE in 2015 was the first by an Indian PM in 34 years, paving the way for subsequent visits and expanded cooperation in various spheres. Leading up to this visit, both leaders engaged in multiple high-level visits.

In 2017, President Al Nahyan was even invited on Republic Day as a chief guest.

By 2022, bilateral relations had been elevated, with both of them signing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). According to ANI , the trade between India and the UAE has grown by 16 per cent to reach $85 million in 2022-23.

Last year, numerous agreements and MOUs were signed during Modi’s visit to Abu Dhabi, covering areas such as local currency settlement, payment and messaging systems, renewable energy, and innovative healthcare.

One of the UAE’s significant investments includes the opening of an office by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority in GIFT City.

The two countries also enjoy strong multilateral relations, with Modi given the special status of being the only Head of State/Head of Government last year to address the ceremonial opening of the COP28 Plenary for that national statements.

With India’s support, the UAE became a permanent member of BRICS on 1 January this year, and joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as a Dialogue Partner in May last year.

PM visit for Abu Dhabi temple opening aligns with tolerance values: UAE envoy

Prime minister modi’s february 13-14 visit to the uae will be his third in the last eight months and the seventh since 2015..

modi abu dhabi visit

Describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming two-day visit to the United Arab Emirates for the inauguration of the BAPS Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi as a “special occasion”, Abdulnasser Alshaali, UAE’s Ambassador to India, has said it “aligns with the values of tolerance and acceptance that guide our bilateral ties”.

Prime Minister Modi’s February 13-14 visit to the UAE will be his third in the last eight months and the seventh since 2015. He will hold bilateral meetings with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and, according to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders will discuss ways to further deepen, expand and strengthen the strategic partnership between the countries and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

modi abu dhabi visit

Modi will also meet Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who is the Vice President, Prime Minister and Defence Minister of the UAE. At his invitation, the Prime Minister will participate in the World Government Summit 2024 in Dubai as Guest of Honour and deliver a special keynote address at the Summit.

Ambassador Alshaali, in an email interview with The Indian Express , said, “The UAE views Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to inaugurate the BAPS Hindu temple as a special occasion that aligns with the values of tolerance and acceptance that guide our bilateral ties.”

“The visit holds symbolic importance, showcasing the friendship between the two nations,” he says, adding that the UAE values the cultural diversity represented by the Indian diaspora, the largest group in the UAE with a population of 3.5 million.

Festive offer

Beyond the opening of the BAPS Hindu temple, the UAE, he said, has a strong expectation that the meeting between the two leaders “will be positive and constructive”.

“It is likely we will witness the announcement of further cooperation in key areas of our bilateral partnership.”

The two countries, according to the MEA, are among each other’s top trading partners with a bilateral trade of about US$ 85 billion in 2022-23. UAE is also among the top 4 investors in India in terms of foreign direct investments in 2022-23.

On the increasing economic collaboration between the two countries, Alshaali said, “The UAE prioritises its bilateral and diplomatic ties with India based upon the two countries’ common political, economic, and diplomatic interests, desire to promote peace and prosperity in the international arena, and deep shared history.”

The Indian Cabinet recently approved the Bilateral Investment Treaty between the two countries. “This treaty reflects the joint efforts to transform the relationship from a traditional import-export dynamic to a strategic partnership. The emphasis on defence, energy, space, and IT sectors highlights the forward-looking nature of our relationship,” the Ambassador said.

“It is difficult to emphasise just how important trade relations are in driving the UAE-India bilateral partnership forward. In recent years, we have witnessed not only quantitative, but also qualitative growth across all aspects of our economic relationship,” he said.

“The proof of this is borne out by the fact that the UAE is India’s fourth-largest investor, third-largest trading partner, and the second-largest export destination.”

“Of course, for the bilateral relationship to reach its true potential, increasing aviation links will play a vital role in enhancing investment and trade opportunities,” he said.

On the contribution of the diaspora and geopolitical considerations to the strengthening of ties, Alshaali said all these aspects play a critical yet unique role in driving what is a robust bilateral relationship.

“The UAE government and its people acknowledge the immense role Indian citizens have played in our national development since even before the very formation of the UAE in 1971,” he said, adding “there is a personal level of familiarity and understanding between our two societies that serves as the foundation stone for our close government-to-government ties”.

The two countries, he said, also share an interest in supporting peace and stability at both the regional and international levels.

“Both countries are impacted by the growing turbulence we are witnessing across a number of different contexts. Our commitment to working closely together is unflinching, and will only grow stronger in the years ahead,” he said.

On how the UAE views India’s political stability, especially when general elections are approaching, Alshaali said India plays a significant role in global politics, and is a critical partner to the UAE, as demonstrated by the UAE President’s visit to the Vibrant Gujarat last month.

“The UAE values India’s political stability, which has been essential to the fostering of strong partnerships and collaboration between our two countries,” he said.

Bilateral relations between the two countries have been elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Both countries signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in February 2022 and a Local Currency Settlement (LCS) System in July 2023 to promote the use of Indian rupee and AED for cross-border transactions.

'Dubai faced Allah's wrath because it built BAPS Mandir': Pakistani's shocking take on historic floods (WATCH)

I n a controversial statement, a Pakistani man has linked the recent historic floods in Dubai to the construction of the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir, a Hindu temple, in the neighbouring emirate of Abu Dhabi. This shocking claim comes months after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the temple on February 14th, marking a significant moment in the region's religious landscape.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), known for its arid climate, recently experienced unprecedented rainfall, with the National Center of Meteorology reporting the highest rainfall in 75 years. Scenes of flooding in Dubai, one of the UAE's prominent emirates and the host of COP28 last year, shocked the world as the city grappled with the aftermath of the deluge.

The Pakistani individual, whose statement gained attention on social media, claimed that Dubai's inundation was a manifestation of divine retribution, attributing it to the construction of the BAPS Mandir, which he referred to as a temple for "idol worshippers" in the "land of idol breakers."

"Dubai faced Allah's wrath in form of rainstorms because they recently built temple for idol worshippers in the land of idol breakers," he shockingly said in a direct reference to the BAPS Mandir in a video that has now gone viral on X, formerly Twitter.

It's worth noting that during his inaugural visit to the UAE in 2015, PM Modi initiated discussions regarding the establishment of a Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi. Subsequently, the UAE government allocated land for the construction of the BAPS temple. Following the temple's inauguration on February 14, PM Modi hailed this development as a "landmark" step and conveyed gratitude to the UAE leadership on behalf of India's 1.3 billion citizens.

"The Government of UAE President has fulfilled a bis wish of crores of India with a large heart. Not just here, they have won the hearts of 140 crore Indians," he had said during his address at the event.

"This temple will become a symbol of communal harmony and global unity for the entire world. UAE's Minister of Tolerance Sheikh Nahyan Al Mubarak is present here, and the views he expressed were actually words describing the strengthening of our dreams," PM Modi had added.

However, the Pakistani individual's interpretation of the recent Dubai floods as a divine punishment has sparked a massive outburst on social media platforms.

Meanwhile, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) told Khaleej Times that there's a chance of light to moderate rain on Monday evening in UAE. It added that the weather situation is anticipated to improve by Wednesday with a drop by five to seven degrees in temperature.

"There's no need for concern; the current situation doesn't involve heavy rainfall whatsoever. It's not comparable to last week's event. It's not going to be intense; they're rather moderate, with clouds shifting from the western coast towards the UAE," Dr Ahmed Habib, a climate expert from NCM, told the outlet.

"There's a chance of light rain or drizzle. These clouds are headed to Abu Dhabi, resulting in light rainfall, then progressing eastward towards the mountains, where cloud formation could lead to a little over moderate rainfall only in mountainous areas. On Wednesday morning all the cloud cover will move outside the UAE towards Oman," Dr Habib added.

Following last week's deluge, scientists attributed the increasingly frequent extreme weather events, including the rains in UAE and Oman, to human-induced global warming.

In the UAE, where rains are rare due to its hot desert climate and temperatures that can exceed 50 degrees Celsius in the summer, the recent downpour came as a stark anomaly.

LeBron James heads star-studded USA team to play in Abu Dhabi ahead of Paris Olympics

Likes of stephen curry and kevin durant will also be part of 12-man squad set to play two exhibition games in uae capital as part of preparation for paris 2024, lebron james and star-studded usa basketball team to play in abu dhabi ahead of olympics.

LeBron James and star-studded USA basketball team to play in Abu Dhabi ahead of Olympics

LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, Joel Embiid … those are just a handful of the stars that have been named on this summer’s USA Basketball Men’s National Team announced on Wednesday and all of them will be coming to Abu Dhabi to compete in two friendly games ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

A 12-man box-office roster that also includes Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Edwards, Kawhi Leonard, Anthony Davis, Devin Booker, Bam Adebayo, and Jrue Holiday, will take on Australia on July 15 and Serbia on July 17 at Yas Island’s Etihad Arena in what will be a crucial part of Team USA’s preparation for their Olympic title defence.

It will be the Americans’ second visit to the UAE capital having held a training camp and contested exhibition games in Abu Dhabi ahead of their 2023 FIBA World Cup campaign last summer , albeit with a different group of players, except for Haliburton and Edwards, who have retained their spots on the national squad.

Grant Hill, the managing director of the US National Team, said they were all “blown away” by their experience in the Emirates last year and jumped at the chance to come back this summer.

“We had such a blast there last year. We had such a good time,” Hill told The National during a Zoom call with members of the press on Wednesday following the squad announcement.

“They were so hospitable. The venue, the accommodations, but just the energy and the spirit there was so much fun. Even when it was really hot, we still managed to have a great time.

“Some great sights, we got a chance to see and experience culture, go out to the desert, go to Dubai, visit the mosque.”

“So yeah, the opportunity presented itself and I know all of us from a leadership standpoint, the coaching staff, we were like, ‘Wow, if we could go back there, that would be awesome’. And so it's worked out that way.”

Hill, who played for USA when they won Olympic gold in 1996, has put together a stacked roster for Paris that is reminiscent of the famous 1992 Dream Team that featured Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

USA finished fourth at the World Cup last year after losing to Germany in the semi-finals and Canada in the bronze-medal game.

The Olympics will surely be a different story with the likes of James and Curry at the helm and a well-thought-out exhibition schedule that features games against Canada in Las Vegas (July 10), a pair of clashes in London against South Sudan (July 20) and Germany (July 22) along with the two exhibition matches in Abu Dhabi.

“We’re grateful we get to go back [to the UAE] and we have two incredible opponents that we’ll play while we're there, Serbia and Australia, both great teams and great players on those teams,” added Hill.

“The exhibition schedule is important and I think we were blown away by our experience there last year and look forward to bringing some of the new players who haven't experienced it before this summer.”

Abu Dhabi is fast becoming a hot spot for world-class basketball, thanks to a multi-year deal signed between the NBA and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, which tipped off in 2022 with the staging of two NBA pre-season games between the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks.

Last year, the USA, Greece, Germany, Egypt, Mexico and Lebanon held training camps and contested friendlies in August before the NBA returned for two more pre-season games between the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves in the fall .

The third edition of the NBA Abu Dhabi Games will see Nikola Jokic’s Denver Nuggets take on Tatum’s Boston Celtics on October 4 and 6, 2024.

Both Jokic and Tatum will come to the UAE capital before then though, the former with Serbia and the latter with USA, for some pre-Olympics exhibitions.

LeBron James returns to the US Olympic roster for the first time since 2012 and the two-time gold medallist will be contesting his fourth Games in Paris this summer.

Durant is a three-time Olympic gold medallist while Curry will be competing in his first Olympic Games.

Adebayo (2020), Booker (2020), Davis (2012), Holiday (2020) and Tatum (2020) have won Olympic gold medals and are part of a group that has gone 34-4 in Olympic competition since James’ debut in 2004.

Team USA will be led in Paris by head coach Steve Kerr (Golden State Warriors), who is assisted by Mark Few (Gonzaga University), Tyronn Lue (L.A. Clippers) and Erik Spoelstra (Miami Heat).

In a warm gesture that was documented and shared on USA Basketball’s social media, Hill and his staff visited every player on the 12-man squad to personally present them with their own national team jerseys ahead of the official announcement on Wednesday.

Hill admits there were some tough decisions that had to be made to finalise the roster and understands why some of the snubs, like that of New York Knicks’ Jalen Brunson, have raised some eyebrows. Brunson was part of the US squad that played at the World Cup last year and is currently enjoying a standout season with the Knicks, who have secured the No 2 seed in the Eastern Conference play-offs.

“First of all, I acknowledge the season he's having is just magical. It's impressive and it's like he almost played himself into that sort of MVP conversation, if you will,” said Hill when asked of Brunson.

“And he's been a great member of our programme, not just last year on the men's national team, but also with the grassroots and the U17s and so on and so forth. So I wanted to acknowledge that.

“I think it's important for me to really honour and celebrate the 12 that are on the team. And not get caught up by this person or that person.

“There were some really difficult decisions that were to be made. You have players who are incredible, players who have helped us in years past, helped us win gold medals. We've had players who are having current seasons that are just off the charts.

“The job was putting together a team and a team that we felt and ultimately what I felt the pieces fit. And this is not an indictment on anyone else. There are some great, great players and we're so grateful that they were interested and they were willing to be a part of this.

“But with that said, we're really, really excited about our group and excited about the pieces, the style, the skill set, the personalities, and we look forward to the challenge ahead.”

USA have landed in Group C at the Olympics alongside Serbia, South Sudan and the winning nation that will emerge through the qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico early July.
