Montenegro ~ Mountain Walks and Wildflowers

Montenegro, little known, unspoilt, beautiful and wild, beckons walkers, entrances wildlife and botany enthusiasts and excites history lovers. During this 11 day itinerary, we walk through dramatic mountain scenery in several of Montenegro’s national parks, our paths bordered by colourful displays of wild flowers, while we are accompanied by soaring birds of prey. We enjoy an afternoon exploring by boat Lake Skadar, the Balkans’ largest lake, a national park and a Ramsar designated wetland. Throughout the trip, we are immersed in Montenegro’s complex and colourful history and culture, culminating in a three night stay in the captivating coastal town of Kotor, a world heritage site and one of the gems of the Adriatic.

We meet in the afternoon at Dubrovnik airport. A short road transfer takes us over the border into Bosnia Herzegovina to Trebinje, where our comfortable modern hotel overlooks the tree-filled market square and offers a restaurant featuring typical Balkan dishes, such as grilled meats and vegetables.

We walk through the old Ottoman quarter of Trebinje and along the Trebišnjica river valley to a notable 16th century stone bridge. We drive to the nearby monastery of Tvrdoš, founded in the 15th century and now particularly renowned for its award-winning wines, before a scenic mountain road takes us over several passes to the Durmitor National Park in Montenegro. This afternoon’s 2 hour walk takes us across a broad upland plateau and offers views of the Durmitor mountains to the west. We pass flocks of sheep with attendant shepherds and observe Montagu’s Harriers hunting the grassland. One of the highlights of our walk are the stećci ,the mediaeval carved Bogomil tombstones scattered throughout the countryside. Our walk ends in the village of Žabljak, located at an altitude of 1456 m in the heart of the National Park. We spend 2 nights in a comfortable modern 3 star hotel.

A short drive through pine and birch forest brings us to the start of our walk to the edge of the spectacular Tara canyon, the longest and deepest in Europe (at certain points the drop is a sheer 1,300 metres). Balkan endemic wildflowers such as Iris bosniaca and Daphne blagayana may be seen as we walk (2 hrs) through mixed forest and meadows en route to our picnic. In the afternoon, we circumnavigate one of Mount Durmitor’s glacial lakes, Crno Jezero , the Black Lake (2 hrs). Depending on the water level, we may cross several waterfalls.

A narrow track takes us into the heart of the Durmitor National Park, a magnificent mountain wilderness with 27 peaks over 2,200 metres and healthy populations of rarely seen brown bears, wolves and lynx. On foot, we cross a pass where snow finches and alpine choughs may be seen, and we search for high altitude flowers, particularly gentians, alpine snowbells and crocuses as we gradually descend a wild valley with superb views of the surrounding peaks (2.5 hrs). Heading east by vehicle, we pause to see the 365 m long bridge which spans the Tara river. In 1942, a Yugoslav Partisan raiding party blew up the central arch, thus halting the Italian advance through the country. We follow the Tara canyon down to the isolated Dobrilovina monastery, where a nun unlocks the heavy wooden door to allow us to see the early 17 th century frescoes. In the Biogradska Gora National park, we take a 1.5 hrs’ walk around the glacial lake through the edges of a magnificent virgin forest. We check in for 3 nights at a nearby small 3 star hotel.

We drive (1 hr) to a village close to the border with Serbia where we start our walk at the remote 17th century frescoed monastery of St. Nikola. From here, we walk along the Bistrica river, descending gradually (300 m over 7 km, 2.5 hrs). In the afternoon, we learn the difference between kačamak and cicvara , two regional traditional dishes based on corn flour, and how the Slow Food movement is helping to preserve many regional specialities, including savoury pies, fruit jams and cheeses..

4WDs take us through the beech and hornbeam forest to 1,790 metres on the Bjelasica mountain range, characterised by its rounded volcanic tops. We walk in upland meadows filled with globeflowers, louseworts and elder-flowered orchids and watch for soaring golden eagles, pausing for lunch with a family of shepherds at their katun (wooden summer shelter). The exact walking route will be determined on the day based on the weather and the group’s preferences. Shorter and longer walking options will be offered.

Our route south follows the Morača river and we visit the eponymous 13th century Orthodox monastery, known for its outstanding Byzantine frescoes. The afternoon’s highlight is a 3-hour boat trip on Lake Skadar, one of the largest lakes in southern Europe and a Ramsar protected site, noted particularly for pygmy cormorant colonies and rare Dalmatian pelicans. Our overnight stop is in a 4-star hotel in Podgorica.

A little-used mountain road, with views of Lake Skadar, takes us to the triple-arched mediaeval bridge at Rijeka Crnojevica and on to Cetinje, the former Royal capital of Montenegro. After an orientation walk and lunch, we drive down into the beautiful Bay of Kotor and settle into our 4 star hotel in the centre of the walled mediaeval town of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The remainder of the afternoon is free for exploring Kotor’s heritage of Venetian architecture, including St Tryphon’s Cathedral, completed in 1166, and numerous Renaissance palaces built by wealthy patricians, merchants and sea captains.

We make our way slowly up the incredible hairpin road above the Bay of Kotor and into the Lovčen National Park. At a striking mountain-top Mausoleum (weather permitting), we pay homage to Njegoš, the nineteenth century Prince-Bishop of Montenegro, widely regarded as  the country’s most famous son. Later, we walk on rocky paths, rewarded by spectacular views and the variety of flora and fauna for which the park is famous: within an area of just 60 square km, there are nine different habitats. It is particularly excellent for orchids including lesser butterfly, fragrant, green-winged, Bertoloni, woodcock, bug and pyramidal and for birds such as hoopoe, red-backed shrike, peregrine, honey buzzard and wheatears. This evening, we dine in a famous old restaurant on the coast.

Today begins with a visit to the remains of the Roman Villa Urbana in nearby Risan, with fine 3rd and 4th century floor mosaics containing geometrical and vegetable motifs, as well as the exceptionally rare presentation of Hypnos , the classical God of Sleep. We then drive to the top of the massif which dominates the Bay of Kotor, for a spectacular walk following the old Austro-Hungarian packhorse route. After a rest and picnic lunch enjoying the stupendous views, we descend to Perast. This once rich and powerful waterfront town, which boasts 16 churches and 17 formerly grand Venetian Gothic palazzi, has an illustrious nautical past. In the 18th century, Perast had a fleet of 1,000 ships and Peter the Great sent his officers to learn marine engineering and cartography here. We take a small boat over to Our Lady of the Rock island to see the votive church and return to Kotor for our farewell dinner in a fine seafood restaurant on the harbour.

We drive along the coast to cross the border into Croatia en route to Dubrovnik airport for flights home, or on to Dubrovnik itself for an optional extension in this coastal jewel of a city.

£280  single room supplement

Please note that the single room supplement is imposed by the hotels and not by Kudu Travel. If you are willing to share, but no other suitable guest books on the trip, we regret that the supplement will be payable. We shall endeavour to obtain double rooms for single occupancy whenever possible, but hotels in some countries do have single rooms that are small and less well positioned. In this case the supplement is simply ensuring your privacy and comfort.

  • The mountains and valleys of Lovcen National Park

Montenegro Coast and Mountain Trails

We recommend flying into Podgorica Airport, from where you will be collected by a private taxi transfer and taken to Cetinje (45min). Check in at your small friendly guesthouse before taking some time to stroll around the lovely old royal capital of Montenegro, founded in the 15th century.

Rich in cultural and historical heritage, there is plenty to see including the royal palace, the grand embassy building and the Cetinje Monastery, destroyed and rebuilt several times over Montenegro’s history.

La Vecchia Casa

An old traditional house in the centre of Cetinje, La Vecchia Casa is a warm and welcoming family run guesthouse.  Breakfast isn't served but they provide eggs, coffee and other breakfast items to make yourself in the kitchen. There is also a lovely garden in which to relax at the end of the day.

A short transfer this morning (30m) brings you to Karuc, a picturesque fishing village on the edge of Lake Skadar. The largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, Skadar is very beautiful (legend says it was created by the tears of a pixie!). It's home to around 270 different types of birds, so don't forget your binoculars today. These include the White Egret, Dalmatian Pelican and Pygmy Cormorant.

On arrival, a relaxing cruise (1h) on a traditional wooden boat gliding amongst the pretty lily pads of the lake gets you closer to some of the birdlife and lets you take in some of the lovely scenery and the tranquility of the lake.

Back in Karuc, we recommend taking some time to enjoy some of the local fish specialities in a café before starting the short walk. You go pass some of the ancient villages in this area with beautiful views of the lake before visiting a local producer of delicious Montenegrin wine for an included tasting. A transfer will collect you passing by the iconic viewpoint of the Rijeka Crnojevica Bridge over Lake Skadar before arriving back in Cetinje.

Please note that today, depending on the availability of the vineyards, you will visit one of two possible options and the walking distances vary slightly between the two. The above distances are based on the longer walk to Jablan Vineyard. Our local partner will tell you which vineyard you are visiting in your welcome meeting on day 1. The walking routes to both vineyards are available to follow in our Macs Adventure app.

Jablan Vineyard walk: 6kms/4mi Ascent/Descent : 149m/50m

Mrkan Vineyard walk: 5kms/3mi Ascent/Descent: 167m/31m

Head out of Cetinje and on to an old trader’s route which will lead you through the mountains and valleys of Lovcen, to your next base in Ivanova Korita, in the heart of the national park.

Your rustic mountain hotel is a lovely place to spend the next couple of nights with its location in a beautiful valley covered with forests and meadows. Enjoy the fantastic views and sample some delicious Montenegrin food and wine.

Ascent/Descent:  619m/5m

HotelMonteRosa

Set within Lovćen National Park, Hotel Monte Rosa enjoys a quiet setting offering views of the surrounding mountains. It provides an on-site restaurant and a bar with a spacious terrace. The nearest Ski lift is 750 yards away, while the town of Cetinje is 9.3 miles away

Ivanov Konak Hotel

With its fantastic location in the heart of Lovcen National Park, Hotel Ivanov Konak offers rustically furnished rooms, a lovely big restaurant with two huge fireplaces serving Montenegrin specialities and of course wonderful views of the surrounding countryside

An exhilarating loop walk today from your hotel to the second-highest point of the National Park, the Jzerski Summit.

Climb a thigh-burning 461 steps leading to the Njegos monument which sits at the summit to be rewarded with panoramic views reaching as far as Kotor Bay in the south, the Albanian Alps in the east and Skadar Lake. Visit the atrium and the crypt before making your way back to your hotel.

Ascent/Descent: 407m/407m

Head towards the Adriatic, continuing on the old trade route which once connected Cetinje with Kotor, now known as the “Ladder of Kotor”.

Take in amazing views towards the Bay of Kotor as you zig-zag down towards Kotor. Continue on the trail past the Chapel of St Ivan, an old catholic church, and the fortress of Castle of San Giovanni, enjoying changing views of the bay the whole time. Finally, you will reach the walls of the Old Town via a series of old stone staircases.

The fortified town of Kotor is a deserved UNESCO World Heritage Site with its Venetian palaces, Roman Catholic cathedrals, Byzantine church, and romantic cobbled streets.

Ascent/Descent:  100m/1390m

montecristo

Hotel Monte Cristo is a lovely old 4* hotel in the centre of the old town in Kotor. Housed in a building from the 13th century, the rooms are tastefully furnished and you can enjoy breakfast overlooking their quiet courtyard.

Babilon Hotel

With its spacious terrace, sea views and private beach area, this is a lovely place to relax at the end of the day, and their intimate restaurant serves traditional Montenegrin cuisine and fish specialities. It costs approx 8 Euros in a taxi from the hotel to the centre of Kotor.

Mount Vrmac sits as a barrier between the innermost part of the Bay of Kotor and the outer part, the Bay of Tivat. Your walk starts in the centre of Kotor on the military zig-zag trail named after Austrian emperor Franz-Josef and climbs up to the “Vrmac Fortress” built in 1892.

Follow a mountain ridge to the summit (765m) before descending on an old shepherd’s trail to the village of Donji Stoliv. Enjoy a coffee at the seaside promenade before being picked up and transferred back to your hotel in Kotor (15min).

Ascent/Descent:  744m/818m

Your day will start with a short transfer to the village of Orahovac, from here a meandering trail ascends through the forest to the ruins of Vranovo Brdo fortress (743m) for great views of the surrounding turquoise coast.

Enjoy a picnic lunch taking in the views before joining another military path down to the small town of Perast. We highly recommend taking a boat trip over to the very pretty “Our Lady of the Rocks” church dating back to 1484 which sits on a manmade island off the coast of Perast.

This charming little church has some beautifully intricate alter and ceiling frescoes well worth a look. Make your way back over to Perast, where a transfer will take you back to Kotor. (20min).

Ascent/Descent:  700m/775m

Check out after breakfast and make your way back to either Tivat (15min), Podgorica (1h 50m) or Dubrovnik Airport (2.5h).

This trip has a carbon score of 15kg per person per night, meaning it’s one of our greenest trips! For comparison, a carbon count of 15kg is equivalent to 88.5 candy bars. Here at Macs, we pride ourselves on being a responsible travel company and continue to adopt, develop and innovate ways to positively impact the environment. Find out more information about how we've carbon counted our trips .

Other Information

Perfect if you have perhaps sampled the delights of neighbouring Croatia, and want something similar, Montenegro is often dubbed as the new “Pearl of the Adriatic”. Walking for between 3 and 6 hours a day on good trails with some steep and rocky ascents and descent, you will stay overnight in a combination of simple guesthouses, a mountain hotel in Lovcen and a 3* hotel in the old town of Kotor.

Classic Routes | If you’re the active, outdoorsy type, who’s interested in taking on the great routes of the world or looking for a challenge, then our Classic Routes are for you. We’re talking the West Highland Way, Tour Du Mont Blanc and the Passau to Vienna Danube Cycle Path, to name but a few!

Multi Centre Walking | With a mix of loop and point-to-point walks stay 2 or 3 nights in one place which offers the chance to slow down and really explore a destination.

Solo Travellers, Families with Teens

As a guide, we would suggest that the minimum age of traveler this tour would be suitable for is: 12 Years

This trip is graded moderate overall, with the average daily distance being 12km and up to 765m ascent. There are a couple of longer days of around 15-16km. You will be walking for between 3 to 6 hours a day on good military and shepherds trails. There are some short sections on gravel roads and some steep and rocky ascents and descent.

7 Nights accommodation is included in your trip. 2 nights are in a small guesthouse in Cetinje, 2 nights in a mountain hotel in Lovcen National Park and 3 nights in a 4* standard hotel in the centre of Kotor. Examples of accommodations used are detailed below. Dependent on availability, similar accommodations of a similar standard may be used and your detailed itinerary will show your exact accommodation. We have chosen Hotel Monte Cristo for its fantastic, very central location in the old town of Kotor. However, being in the old town it can be quite noisy in the evening. If you prefer a hotel in a quieter location, we also use the Babilon Hotel and Restaurant.

Accommodation Location

We will always try and accommodate you at the locations detailed in your itinerary. Occasionally, because of limited availability, there is the option to be accommodated at an alternative location. In the unlikely event that we have to accommodate you elsewhere we will advise you of this before confirming your booking.

You can start this walking tour on any day of the week between mid-March and the end of October, subject to availability. Montenegro enjoys a pleasant climate perfect for walking in spring and autumn. The coastline has typically Mediterranean weather with very warm summers whereas in the National Park it gets slightly cooler. At the start and end of the season there is a greater probability of rain and we would recommend packing plenty of layers as the temperature can more variable. May is the best time to see the wild flowers and late September to mid October for the fall colours,  July and August are good months to go, but can be very hot for walking and therefore aren’t best suited for everyone. You will have to start early to miss the heat of the day and carry a lot of water (additional weight) with you. Although the towns and villages are buzzing at this time of year which is great to see.

By Air - The closest airport to Cetinje is Podgorica and this is where we recommend flying to.  From the UK you can fly from London to Podgorica with airlines like Ryanair or TUI . From Europe, other airlines flying to Podgorica include Turkish Airlines , Austrian Airlines and Air France amongst others. From Podgorica a private taxi transfer is included to take you to Cetinje (approx 45min). It is also possible to fly to Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia, from where you would take a shuttle to the centre of Dubrovnik and then another two buses to Cetinje via Herceg Novi (3.5h in total).  By Road : It is possible to drive to Cetinje from the coast via the E65/E80 and M2.3 roads (approx 1h 10m from Kotor).

By Air: The closest airports to Kotor are either Tivat Airport or Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia. There is no public transport from Kotor to Tivat Airport but we can pre-book very reasonably priced airport transfers for you in advance which would take approx 20 minutes. Airlines flying to Tivat from the UK include Easyjet and Montenegro Airlines.  To get to Dubrovnik Airport, you would take a bus to the centre of Dubrovnik (once daily, 2h) and then a shuttle bus to the airport (30min, hourly departures). There are many flights to Dubrovnik from both the UK and Europe. We can also arrange private transfers from Kotor to Dubrovnik airport for an additional cost. Please select the required option when making your booking or ask one of our D&A Specialists for details.

Your bags will be transferred from your accommodation as per your itinerary and moved onto your next overnight stay. We ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to 20kg per person.

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity and emergency evacuation and hospital care.

We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as the region is extremely popular and the accommodations do get booked up quickly. However, we will always try our very best to accommodate your plans.

Your detailed information pack will be sent to you after you book. This has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, waterproof clothes and a day pack.

One Day in Kotor, Montenegro Itinerary

montenegro walking tour

Sharing is caring:

How to Spend One Day in Kotor, Montenegro

Here’s how to spend one day in Kotor, Montenegro!

Whether you are here for one day on a day trip from Croatia, or as a stop on a cruise or a sailing trip, this guide will show you how to spend the day in one of Montenegro’s prettiest towns.

Kotor has been gaining tons of popularity in recent years. It’s seen a massive increase in tourists from cruise ships, who often stop at Kotor between Croatia and Greece. It’s also easily doable as a day trip from the more popular Dubrovnik, Croatia which is just a couple hours away.

Where is Montenegro? Montenegro is a small country just south of Croatia on the Balkan Peninsula. Croatia and Montenegro have a very similar language, and both were part of former Yugoslavia.

Nowadays, Montenegro is becoming a tourist hotspot due to its beautiful Adriatic coastline, the dramatic Bay of Kotor, and the stunning national parks in the northern part of the country. It’s still overshadowed by neighboring Croatia, but I think that will change soon.

Montenegro is a fantastic destination and one that is definitely worth visiting.

I came to Montenegro for just one day back in summer 2018 as a stop on a cruise. Three years later, I revisited Montenegro for four days this time and explored more of the country.

I based myself in Kotor, so I got to know the area pretty well. If you only have one day in Kotor, such as on a day trip from Dubrovnik or as a stop on a cruise, here’s how to spend it!

Getting to Kotor, Montenegro

The closest airport to Kotor is Tivat International Airport about twenty minutes away, but it’s tiny and you’re not going to find many flights in and out of there.

Instead, the most common way to get to Kotor is from Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik is just over two hours away by car, and Dubrovnik has a much larger international airport.

From Dubrovnik, you can get a rental car and drive yourself, hire a private transfer, or take the bus. You can also book an organized day tour through GetYourGuide.

Keep in mind that while driving, it only takes about two hours but you can get held up at the border. When I crossed the border, there was no one there and it took about five minutes, but I’ve heard that in the busy summer months, it can take up to an hour to get through the border.

Kotor is also accessible by cruise ship, sailboat, or yacht, and you will often see many vessels (from massive cruise liners to small private boats) docked there during the summer months.

Quick Info About Montenegro

Here are some quick facts about Montenegro to know before you go:

  • Year Founded: 2006 (previously it had been in a union with Serbia since 1992)
  • Capital:  Podgorica
  • Population:  621,000
  • Language: Montenegrin (almost identical to Croatian and Serbian, and English is widely spoken in the more touristy areas like Kotor)
  • Currency: Euro (although it is not part of the EU)
  • High Season:  June through September

And here’s my recommended itinerary for spending one day in Kotor, Montenegro:

1. Take a walking tour.

Kotor has a beautifully preserved walled Old Town that is like a smaller version of Dubrovnik’s popular Old Town. I recommend starting off your day with a walking tour of the Old Town.

I did this free walking tour which I would highly recommend. It’s only an hour long, but gives a great overview of Kotor, including its history and little hidden corners you might otherwise miss. (And remember that although it’s a free walking tour, you should always tip your guide!)

One Day in Kotor

2. Walk the City Walls.

After your morning walking tour, stroll along the Kotor’s City Walls.

These ancient walls encircle the Old Town and were built for defensive purposes starting as early as the 9th century. There are several entrances to the walls around the Old Town, and you can start from any of them. Allot for 1.5 to 2 hours to walk the complete loop.

I have seen conflicting information about the admission price online, stating that it is anywhere from €3 to €8. When I visited in May 2021, it was free and there was no one around. I have also read online that the City Walls are always free before 8 AM or after 8 PM.

So, be prepared to pay just in case! It’s definitely worth it and you’ll get some amazing views of the Old Town and the Bay of Kotor as you walk along the walls.

One Day in Kotor

3. Climb to the Kotor Fortress.

This is an optional activity if you’re in the mood for a very steep walk!

From within the City Walls, towards the back of the Old Town, you can follow a winding path all the way up to an old fortress known as the Kotor Fortress, St. John Fortress, or San Giovanni Fortress.

The fortress offers an amazing viewpoint. This is definitely where you can get “the shot” of Kotor and the bay. I personally did not make it all the way up, because the path was steep and I was already hot, but apparently it takes between 45 minutes and one hour to make it up the path (which is mainly uneven stone steps.) It’s much easier and faster coming down.

If you’re up for it, this is a great way to take in a stunning view of the area.

One Day in Kotor, Montenegro Itinerary

4. Stop for lunch.

At this point, you should probably be pretty hungry from all that walking!

Now is a great time in the day to stop for lunch somewhere. There are plenty of restaurants dotted throughout the squares of the Old Town, although some of them are overpriced and touristy.

One place I heard recommended time and time again by locals was BBQ Tanjga. Located just outside the Old Town, this is apparently THE place to go in Kotor if you’re looking for meat. As a vegetarian, I did not try it myself, but I heard it was an excellent and affordably priced place to eat.

5. Explore Perast and take a boat.

The final thing I recommend doing in one day in Kotor is visiting the nearby town of Perast. This tiny town is about a fifteen-minute drive from Kotor. If you are on a day trip from Dubrovnik, it’s also in the direction returning to Croatia, making it a good final stop.

To get to Perast from Kotor, you can either drive, take the Blue Lines bus that cost 1€, take a taxi, or hire a boat from the Bay of Kotor (prices negotiable.)

Perast is a small but cute littletown also located on the Bay of Kotor.

One of the best things you can do here is take a boat out to Our Lady of the Rocks, a tiny island in the middle of the bay with nothing but a bright blue-domed church on it… located right across from ANOTHER tiny island with nothing but a small church on it.

You can get a boat from Perast and it should be about 5€ round trip.

One Day in Kotor

6. Have dinner in Perast.

There are lots of nice waterfront restaurants in Perast, and while the prices are not going to be as cheap as you’ll find in other parts of Montenegro, they’re still less than in Kotor.

Perast is a great spot to have dinner before departing. Or just grab an ice cream and stroll along the town’s waterfront promenade enjoying the view before you go!

One Day in Kotor

Where to Stay in Kotor, Montenegro

If you have some additional time and want to stay overnight in Kotor, here are the best places to stay. If you can spare one or two nights, I highly recommend spending more time in Kotor!

  • Hotel Villa Duomo:   For a really unique experience in Kotor, stay in this boutique luxury hotel that is located in a historic family villa within the walls of the Old Town.
  • Apartments Residence Portofino:   This is where I stayed in Kotor and I loved it. It’s about a thirty-minute walk from the Old Town, but you’re right on the bay and there’s a pool, free bikes, etc. This is a great option if you want a whole apartment at an affordable price.
  • Old Town Hostel: If you’re on a budget, you can’t go wrong with the popular Old Town Hostel. This affordable hostel with dorm beds is located within the City Walls of Kotor.

This itinerary showed you how to spend one day in Kotor, Montenegro!

Kotor is a great destination with a lot to offer. While it’s definitely becoming more popular, it still remains underrated and now is definitely a good time to visit this Balkan gem.

Enjoying the views of Budva on our Montenegro Cycle

Destination

Bosnia and herzegovina, czech republic, liechtenstein, netherlands, north macedonia, switzerland, türkiye/turkey, united kingdom, bike & boat, multi-activity, vessels & boats, advanced search.

Set on the spectacular Adriatic coast south of Croatia, the small nation of Montenegro has got it all – a rich history of royalty, remarkable architecture perched on crumbling cliffs and outrageous natural beauty.

Montenegro is a nation defined by its rugged dark mountains and dazzling beaches, and this diverse terrain is superbly suited for active travel. Enjoy cycling along the stunning beaches and terraced towns of the Adriatic coastline, with the Dinaric Mountains looming in the near distance. Take advantage of rest stops to dip into the cool turquoise waters and admire the bobbing boats in the endless harbours. Explore the cobbled streets and impressive craftsmanship of ancient walled cities.

Away from the seaside, take the back roads through Montenegro’s storybook olive groves and gaze in awe at the splendid panoramas over Skadar Lake, set against the jagged backdrop of the Accursed Mountain Range. Encounter timeless shepherding villages that still practice old fashioned lifestyles and learn of the Mediterranean influence on the local culture. Don’t miss the incredible Bay of Kotor and the lively atmosphere of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Old Town, the perfect setting for al fresco dining on freshly grilled seafood or hearty Balkan cuisine.

Montenegro may not be as widely known as its neighbours in the Mediterranean, but its anonymity belies just how rewarding a holiday to Montenegro can be.

1. kotor walk tour.

St Luke's Church Kotor Unsplash

RATING: 5 / 5 (11+ reviews) | TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | BOOK NOW

This group tour takes 1 ½ hours and visits all the top sights in Kotor old town. Unlike shorter tours, it includes a guided tour of 9th century St Tryphon Cathedral, which is one of the top sights in Kotor and well worth visiting.

It also includes a complimentary charcoal coffee experience - this is the only place in the world you can try this kind of coffee!

"I picked the private tour and my guide, Radosav, was very good. He patiently answered all my questions, gave me some useful tips and even walked me to the only vegan restaurant in Kotor. The tour was just the right duration - not too long and not too short - and was a great way to start my holiday in Kotor. As a local, Radosav gave me some insight into what it's like to live in Kotor and he didnt just rattle off history/facts like most guides do. This felt more like a walk around Kotor with a friend. I recommend doing a private tour because some of the group tours I saw had very large groups. And if you can, ask for Radosav!" - Rohan V. ( read more reviews )
