Denmark’s seven greatest cycling routes
With the seemingly endless national, regional and local cycle routes in Denmark, how do you know where to start? We’ve got you. Here are Denmark’s seven beloved national long-distance routes, all of which make for a great self-guided cycling tour of Denmark.
From cycling up to the furthest reaches of the country in Skagen all along the backbone of Jutland, to crossing the border in a city-to-city route from Berlin to Copenhagen and gentle island-hopping tours exploring Fyn, there are plenty of bike routes to choose from. Cycling around, across and in Denmark is a pastime enjoyed by many Danes, and now you can join their ranks too!
The Baltic Sea Cycle Route (820 km)
This cycle route in the shape of a figure eight runs through some of the most beautiful areas of coastal Denmark, including the fjords west of the Small Belt bridge, the archipelago around South Fyn and the cliffs on the island of Møn. Island-hopping is the aim of the game in the southern section, where you will cycle over bridges or take your bike on cycle-friendly ferries to explore quiet islands and peaceful beaches, whilst continuing the loop round to the south of Jutland.
West Coast Cycle Route (560 km)
From the German border in the south to the northern tip of Skagen, this route takes you on Denmark’s Route 1 through some of its best countryside, past beautiful fishing villages and unique natural areas. Along the route, you’ll cycle by the Wadden Sea, a special natural environment, home to seals and some of the country’s best oysters. Pus, the Tipperne bird sanctuary and plenty of towering sand dunes. At the top you’ll reach Grenen, Jutland’s most northerly point, where the Skagerrak and Kattegat seas come together.
The Limfjord Route (600 km)
Limfjord is Denmark’s largest fjord area, some 180 km of islands, bays and narrow ports where small ferries and multiple bridges connect the land. The area was used by the Vikings over a thousand years ago, and this route takes you around the fjord on flat stretches and wooded ridges, with gentle landscapes on the east coast through to rougher seas on the North Sea coast.
The Berlin-Copenhagen Route (630 km)
This international bike path connects these two energetic cities with plenty of unspoilt nature, swimming opportunities and more in-between. Part of the Eurovelo 7 cycle route, it is split into three stages and typically takes at least 12 days to complete, including a ferry ride between Rostock and Gedser.
The Ancient Road (450 km)
This historic hiking and cycling route leads from Padborg in South Jutland over moraine hills to Frederikshavn in the north of Jutland, with everything including cultural monuments, historical sights and amusement parks in-between. Once a route for pilgrims, drovers, merchants and craftsmen, today it gives you an opportunity to travel the backbone of Jutland from north to south and enjoy its varied nature and landscape.
The Fjord Path (275 km)
Starting in Roskilde, some 40km from Copenhagen (and an easy-ish ride from there), this route takes you around Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord on the north and west parts of Zealand. Without too many hills, it clings to the fjord coastline with sea views and car-free roads most of the way.
The Border Route (130 km)
This route traces the area where Northern Germany and Southern Jutland join (an area that celebrated a historic reunification in 2020). It runs from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea and takes a zigzag route across the border from Vidå lock near Højer to the top of the port of Flensburg.
Any questions from the audience?
Experience has taught us that you might be wondering one of the following things right about now...
When is the best time to cycle around Denmark?
If you ask a Dane, there's no bad time to cycle around Denmark. But you might not agree with us...
The peak season for travel in Denmark is June-end August, when temperatures hit around 22◦C and there can be as many as 19 hours of daylight. Shoulder season (late spring and early autumn) is recommended for cyclists looking for quiet roads but reasonable temperatures. Winter (November-February) can be as cold as -1◦C and feels colder with wind chill.
Can I rent a bike on location?
The short answer is: YES! You don't have to bring your own bike if you'd rather not.
In Copenhagen, touring bikes can be rented from Baisikeli and Copenhagen Bicycles for longer trips outside the city. You can take bikes on trains and metros to reach your start point, or hire a bike in the destination on arrival.
Is it possible to go on a cycling tour?
Yes, there are multiple tour operators offering cycling holidays and tours in Denmark, including MTB Tours who offer mountain bike, multi-country trips and day trips. Cycle groups Rapha and Pas Normal Studios run group day trips that start and end in Copenhagen.
Do you have bike-friendly accommodation?
Yes we do! As bike enthusiasts ourselves, we totally get why you don't want to leave your darling bike outside in the cold.
The Bed + Bike scheme is a range of certified bike-friendly accommodation worth looking out. There are also basic shelters available for those who travel by kayak, bike or on foot from 30 kr per night, bookable via the Book en Shelter , Ud I Naturen and Naturstyrelsen websites.
How can I plan and navigate my way around Denmark?
The Naviki website offers excellent route planning information and downloadable routes and suggestions for smartphones and GPS devices, and is an essential for anyone wanting to explore Denmark by bike.
What's your next stop going to be?
We have a few suggestions that might be relevant for you to read. (But not while you cycle of course.)

Bike tour with a guide
Going by bike is a very Danish thing. By tradition we transport ourselves by bicycle on an everyday basis throughout life. The bike is also ideal for a holiday or if you want to experience a bit more of the city than just the very central core. If we want to go out into the countryside, it's great with the free exercise provided by the bike. Furthermore to feel the wind in our hair and to enjoy all the scents that greet us without any filtres.

Løverodde – Mountain Bike at Løverodde, Sdr. Stenderup Forest
The best combination between great nature and a easy mountainbike ride is found at Løverodde, south of Kolding.
We bike on small trails right next to the beach, and follow the coastline of the Little Belt strait. On top of the big cliff, we simply have a great view over the sea and the island of Funen, and I'll tell you a bit about the landscape and the area.
We continue the bike ride through the woods on good wide trails. The trails are especially suitable for those who have limited experience with mountain biking.
We end the tour by biking around the Paradise Bay, and it is certainly not an exaggeration that the bay has this name.
The price is DKK 500 per person – min. 4 people.

Bicycle Ride to Moesgaard – From Aarhus
You might have heard of "hygge" before; On this tour to Moesgaard we will experience maximum hygge levels.
We'll take bikes in the city and cycle towards what used to be an old farm and mansion and is now home to parts of the university. The tour is fairly easy to cycle (except one steep climb). We'll stop at Moesgard and if you would like to we can visit the prized museum, visit an old mill and walk to the unspoiled Southern Beaches of Aarhus.
You will get to see what I perceive as the epitome of Danish country side in all its beauty and – of course – hygge!

Viking Biking Tour
We take a nice bike ride from Lejre to Roskilde, where we follow in the footsteps of the Vikings.
We take the train to Roskilde, with possibility of renting bicycles, if you do not already have your own bicycle. We go from Roskilde by train to Lejre, where the best landscape with Viking monuments is located. I'll tell the story of among other things Beowolf, as it unfolded here on the spot. When we come to Roskilde, we visit the Viking Ship Museum, where it is possible to sail on a real Viking ship and where you can also enjoy a Viking meal! If we have time, we go on a short city-walk in Roskilde, where we also have to drop off the bikes, if they are rented.
A bike tour - why
By tradition we transport ourselves by bicycle in Denmark. We start our biking tradition when we as children get our first walking bike. The next bike comes with support wheels and later the two-wheeled ones follow. As we grow, so does the bikes and the distance we can get around increases. Have you noticed how happy small children become when they are allowed to frolic on their walking bikes? The joy of independence is a lifelong feeling of freedom that continues on all the following bike tours.
Holidays on bicycles
Many people are familiar with going on holiday by bicycle. Feeling the wind in your hair, the scents that your nose discovers, the ability to stop or take a break right where you want. This is the essence of a cycling holiday. When several generations are going together, it also ensures that everyone is equally tired at the end of the day.
A cycling holiday is good exercise as well as a great way to experience Denmark. If you want to know more about the area you are enjoying on your cycling holiday, we recommend you let a local guide come along to reveal all the good stories as you experience Denmark together.
Experience the city by bike
Do you want to experience a city without facing the challenge of parking a car? Then the bicycle will be the perfect means of transport. On the bike you can get almost anywhere and often make shortcuts. If you let a local guide accompany you, the guide knows the cycle paths, shortcuts and best cycle routes.
In Copenhagen, the guide can lead the way and show you the new super cycle path and relevant detours. Together with your guide, you can also go by bike to Kalveboderne on a tour gathering herbs. Or you can experience Sydhavnen with all the exciting contrasts. If you're more focused on enjoying the inner city, the bike is an obvious mean of transport. Fortunately there are many great cycle paths so it's very easy to get around. The guide leads the way and knows where to guide you.
You can also go on a guided bike tour in Odense, where a tour through the history of the city's liberation is a good choice. It is all about the end of the World War II in Odense and the guide knows where history unfolded. It is a story of sadness and joy. Odense aims to be Denmark's No. 1 cycling city and calls itself the City of Cyclists. The city also has a really nice information page about Cyklisternes by Odense . Unfortunately it is in Danish only. Google may reveal itself being your friend if you want to know more about Odense Cycling City.
From Odense, it is also an obvious choice to go by bike along some of the wonderful cycle paths and let the guide take you to places such as Langesø and Kerteminde or somewhere else entirely. There are many good cycling experiences on Funen, the island that would like to be Denmark's, and even the world's, best cycling island.
By bike in nature
It is so obvious to experience the Danish nature by bicycle. You can cycle in many places. The cycling island of Funen, the beautiful nature around Vejle and lovely Zealand and Lolland-Falster. The options are numerous - even more than you can see in our list of guided bike tours. If you would like a guide, get in touch and we will find you a guide.
We are happy to say visit Denmark by bike with Guide Service Denmark and our bicycle guides.

The Most Spectacular Places to Cycle in Denmark
It’s known worldwide that Denmark has a long cycling culture, with locals using bikes in order to move around the city. It’s also well known that Denmark has a varied and beautiful landscape with long coasts, pastures and forests that are worth being seen. According to locals, there isn’t a better way to explore the country’s beautiful places than on their beloved two-wheeled vehicle. Whether you want a relaxed cycle tour by the beach or a more adventurous mountain bike ride down a bluff side of a forest – our guide has you covered.

2. Svendborg
It may be the second largest city on the island of Funen, but Svendborg is characterized by small quiet streets and a peaceful atmosphere. Like the rest of the country, cycle paths are everywhere – allowing cyclists to discover different areas. Sea lovers should cycle along the coast while culture enthusiasts should head north and visit Egeskov – the best preserved Renaissance castle in Europe.

3. South Funen Archipelago
The part south of the island of Funen, known as South Funen Archipelago, consists of approximately 55 islands and is considered one of the top destinations in Denmark. All of the islands have beautiful beaches and landscapes that are worth a visit, but Ærø is the one that stands out. It is one of the best places for cyclists because it’s mostly flat and it can easily be explored on two wheels. Plus it’s one of the warmest and sunniest places in Denmark. It is often described as the ‘Fairytale Island’. Ride your bike and delve into every attraction that the three cities and 14 villages of the island have to offer.

Limfjord Cycle Route
Some of the most remarkable cycling routes are found in the area around the city of Aalborg . The Limfjord cycle route is 600km long and those who’ll manage to cycle all the way from Hals to Thyborøn will pass by forests, lakes and hills. A shorter route, but equally beautiful, is the Halkær route which leads from Nibe to Havbro. Explore the area in your own rhythm and discover places that can not be seen when traveling by car or train.
6. Fur Island
Finally, if you’re traveling in this part of Denmark you shouldn’t miss out visiting Fur Island. It’s a cyclist’s paradise. Take a ride up to the top of the island and enjoy the breathtaking view or cycle along the coast and soak up some sun while exploring the Danish countryside. With ferries coming approximately every 15 minutes during summertime, getting there from the highland is quite easy.

The perfectly developed cycle paths, the Baltic Sea and the picturesque islands are sure to amaze you.
Useful information about your cycle tour in Denmark
The climate in denmark.
Its special location between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea gives Denmark a mild climate, regulated by the two seas. The flat land in turn ensures that it rains relatively little compared to Central Europe - the amount is about ten percent less than the German average. For cycling, this is of course just as pleasant as the moderate temperatures, which vary between about 2 degrees daytime in winter and 20 degrees in midsummer.
The Danish cuisine
Since Denmark is a peninsula and has many harbour towns, fishing has developed into a significant economic factor. However, the fish are also found on the domestic menu. A typical fish dish of the Danes is torsk, in English cod, with boiled potatoes and mustard sauce. But the absolute classic is the so-called smørrebrød, the impressive open sandwiches. Whether with butter, herring and egg yolk or salmon and dill, there are no limits to creativity when it comes to toppings. Bon appétit!
Did you know...
- that the Danes are known as the happiest people?
- that Denmark has two national anthems?
- that Google Maps was invented by two Danes?
- that Denmark has the oldest amusement park in the world?
- that there is no word for please in the Danish language?
- that the Danish coast is longer than the Great Wall of China?
- that in Denmark you don't slide into the New Year, but jump?
- that Lego bricks were invented in Denmark?

Danes love biking and our tiny country offers a great variety of beautiful routes.
We have carefully selected very popular and bike friendly routes in both the islands of Zealand (Sjælland) and Funen (Fyn) as well as on the peninsula, Jutland with a sidetrip to the Energy Island of Samsø.
We have organized different bike tours in Denmark for bike enthusiasts from all around the world.
Generally our tours are individual self-guided tours. Some tours a particularly suitable for families with children and some tours have longer stages more suitable for the more trained cyclist. There’s a route for everyone!
Common for all tours is that they are moving through absolutely beautiful landscapes with a great variety of rolling hills, deep forests, cosy villages and scenic coastlines.
Most of our tours are individual self-guided tours, and upon arrival you will receive mapbook and a roadbook with description of the tour and we have arranged for hotel accommodation and luggage transfers between hotels

Denmark - Trails & Castles Bike Tour
Trip Overview
Denmark gets it right! This is the most welcoming and bicycle-friendly country in the world. It's perfect for your next bike tour. Bicycles outnumber cars, and the people are universally considered the happiest, most content people on earth! Join us as we introduce you to the charms of Denmark – the old-world atmosphere of crooked back streets, quaint buildings, alleyways, hidden squares, and the charms of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale city of Copenhagen. Explore magnificent castles (including Hamlet’s famed Elsinore!), learn about Viking lore, walk beautiful beaches along the Baltic, take a day trip into Sweden, and enjoy the best of cycling as we ride through the Danish landscape with its rolling hills, thatched-roof farmhouses, beech forests, and whitewashed churches, mostly riding along dedicated bike paths, and always being beside — or within a few miles of — the sea.
