crypto.com arena muse concert review matt bellamy

Popular on Variety

I’ll come down as unabashedly in favor, especially when it comes to the highly oxygenated emissions of Bellamy, one of the talented male singers the flagging genre still boasts … a Bono who’s got a few Pavarotti genes spliced into his DNA. Even if he does have to sing “Madness” — the greatest rock power ballad of the last 25 years — a half-step down from the record, his three-octave range is a marvel to aurally behold, at least if you aren’t holding any long-standing grudges against, like, passion. (He’s a guitar hero, too, not incidentally — the 19-second guitar solo in “Madness” sounded even better and more cranked-up than ever.) There is a kind of formula to Muse’s songs — not nearly all of them, but most of ’em that are “hits” — that involves a build from a moody, broody verse to a suspenseful, crescendoing pre-chorus to an explosive peak that is just about as much an aria as rock chorus. And then, rinse and repeat, twice! Over the course of a 22-song set like the one in L.A., you keep thinking Muse just shot their wad too early by placing the most dramatically satisfying song in the set too early, then you’re reminded that there are five more just as viscerally exciting coming down the pike, and they still haven’t remotely gotten to actual clock-punching peaks “Starlight” and “Knights of Cydonia.” In that way it’s a little bit like the “John Wick 4” of rock shows.

Also providing a break in the action, while ramping up the pomp and circumstance of the whole thing, were some FX-filled videos that offered some conceptual continuity to the concert, and offered visual teases of the giant props to come. The first of these segments had a rioter in a mask made up of mirrors being stricken down by a towering, strangely uniformed, horned figure representing The Man. A few songs into the show, the visage of the mirror-masked man appeared behind the band as the first giant inflatable of the night, his head moving slightly to the right or left. When it came time for the encore, he was replaced by his evil nemesis, the possibly “Fantasia”-inspired, horned authoritarian dude, with giant gloved hands outstretched on either side of the massive stage. Did his eyes glow in the dark at appropriate moments? Of course they did. It was, without a doubt, unbelievably cheesy. But you might not think so if you’re, like, Iron Maiden fan, and seeing this giant dude pop out on stage is as natural as seeing Eddie in your nightly dreams.

Accepting something as goofy as these giant inflatables means accepting Bellamy as a little bit of a contradiction at times. He’s the guy who can expound at length on the intricacies of changing global politics who also has no shame for ’80s horror movies and video games. (On this tour, they perform the recent song “You Make Me Feel Like Halloween,” an homage to John Carpenter and Stephen King, preceded by Bellamy sitting at an organ to knock out “Toccata and Fugue in D minor,” a piece so associated with old horror films it can only count as comedy anymore.) And he’s the guy who told Variety last year that, left to his own devices, he might write mostly beautiful music in more of an Enya vein, but also loves Rage Against the Machine so much that you can’t believe Muse’s headbanging side isn’t his first and final love. If you’re going to love part of what Muse does, you kind of take it all — the sense of life-and-death importance that’s implicit in most of their best songs, and the old-school showmanship that comes with that. It’s easier to take the whole shebang, of course, if you have any nostalgia for giant puppets of teachers who won’t leave them kids alone and that sort of thing, and don’t mind seeing the theatricality transposed into the present.

Really, though, for all of the videos and balloons, Muse’s is more of a straightforward rock show than those visual accoutrements might lead you to believe. I caught their promo show at the Wiltern last fall, the one with no props or special effects, just a big emphasis on their most aggro tracks — and didn’t think this return to their normal, full-size production would be as satisfying. Actually, it was, even the presence of a ramp meant Bellamy spent less time standing anywhere near the band’s great bass player, Christopher Tony Wolstenholme, or phenomenal drummer, Dominic Howard, as a visual power trio than usual. In some ways, despite the elaborate lighting and rigging, it felt like a return to ’70s arena shows that predated the onset of massive props and effects.

One of the most ironic things about it was how many of the bells and whistles of the show were downright primitive things that have historically delighted audiences. Very, very early in the show, long, colorful streamers were released. When was the last time you saw streamers in a concert? A few songs later, it was confetti. When was the last time you saw confetti? Well, probably a lot more recently than the streamers, but still . And from there, the band moved on to… a snow effect. No wonder Bellamy prefers to keep calling the venue Staples Center instead of Crypto: As digitally minded and forward-looking as a guy who spends part of the evening dressed in a suit of LED lights may be, he’s keeping alive the best aspects of the age of paper products.

Muse live in The Hague: a ferocious and compulsive rock show for the masses

Malieveld, June 7: 67,000 transfixed Dutch fans sign up to Muse's sci-fi rock revolution during the latest stop of the three-piece's 'Will Of The People' world tour

The revolution, finally, has a figurehead. As Muse don their geometric metal masks like a battalion of rebel guards from  Squid Game , the wall of lights at the back of the stage draws back and the 50-foot face of an overseer emerges amid the flames, his huge mask becoming transparent so we can see the skeletal images, kaleidoscopic fractals and shapeshifting T-1000 videos of Matt Bellamy ’s face lurking beneath. Its message: the Will Of The People must be obeyed. What do they want? Gristly melodic space rock, Trumpian satire, anti-authoritarian rhetoric and a massive metal glove that makers noises! Where do they want it? In an apocalyptic desert futurescape, thanks!

Following the ‘80s retrovision of 2018’s ‘Simulation Theory’ , Muse’s latest album ‘Will Of The People’ both brilliantly consolidated their 25-year journey and saw their long-standing concerns – global catastrophe, technological horrors of war and thought control, rising authoritarianism, the encroaching death of democracy – collide head-on with the now. The world had, somewhat terrifyingly, caught up with Muse, making them more musically and thematically relevant than ever. In some territories, they’re bigger than ever. “We’ve never seen anything like this,” Bellamy says, peering out across 67,000 people crammed into The Hague’s Malieveld park, and The Hague – in return – has never seen a rock show this ferocious and compulsive.

muse live

With the band often careening along a gigantic ego ramp to play in the thick of the crowd, a chunk of gritty future glam opens proceedings. ‘Will Of The People’ – a terrifying vision of right-wing revolt eviscerating the Capitol coup crew – sets the insurgent tone, ‘Psycho’ gets introduced by an evil android sergeant major and ‘Hysteria’ zooms by so supersonically that Tom Cruise might well be at the controls. Then an intense and euphoric ‘Bliss’ – dedicated to “anyone out there who’s 22, that’s how old it is” – pulls the set into a melodic cruising altitude far above their future rock contemporaries, where ‘Resistance’ can lace glory rock with ABBA -esque synth lines and ‘Compliance’ can explore themes of cult-like online manipulation and cancel culture in the realm of gleaming disco pop.

If ‘Verona’ leans slightly too far into spacey Coldplay atmospherics, there are antidotes aplenty. ‘We Are Fucking Fucked’ is an absolutely brutal catalogue of ongoing disasters ranging from wildfires to world wars; Muse rocking defiantly into oblivion. The spook rock ‘You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween’, introduced with Bach’s vampiresque ‘Toccata And Fugue In D Minor’, sees the huge mask fill with the faces of cinematic serial killers from Chucky to Pennywise and Ghostface. ‘Kill Or Be Killed’ has already found its place among the Muse greats, a monstrous slab of Who -rock that sees a giant demon goat rise in the overseer’s place.

muse

Ah, the greats. If Muse’s current aesthetic of sci-fi revolution feels viscerally contemporary, then that’s because it’s built on one of the greatest stadium rock canons of the century. ‘Madness’: the throb rock Queen hit that never was. ‘Supermassive Black Hole’: still sounding like the future of rock music 20 years on. ‘Time Is Running Out’, ‘Plug In Baby’, ‘Starlight’ and the eternal set-closer ‘Knights Of Cydonia’: songs for which most major gig arenas should really take out structural damage insurance. Now this, as support act Royal Blood might say, is rock music.

Muse played:

‘Will of the People’ ‘Interlude’ ‘Hysteria’ ‘Psycho’ ‘Bliss’ ‘Resistance’ ‘Won’t Stand Down’ ‘Compliance’ ‘Thought Contagion’ ‘Verona’ ‘Time Is Running Out’ ‘The 2nd Law: Isolated System’ ‘Undisclosed Desires’ ‘You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween’ ‘Madness’ ‘We Are Fucking Fucked’ ‘The Dark Side’ ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ ‘Plug In Baby’ ‘Behold, the Glove’ ‘Uprising’ ‘Prelude’ ‘Starlight’

‘Kill or Be Killed’ ‘Knights of Cydonia’

Muse at Groupama Stadium, Lyon.

Muse review – sublimely ridiculous rock’n’roll camp

Groupama Stadium, Lyon With pyrotechnics that might tire a pyromaniac and a giant blow-up Satan the Devonian stadium-fillers have lost none of their thrilling pomp

H alfway through Muse’s set, probably the daftest thing that Groupama Stadium has ever seen happens. Frontman Matt Bellamy is wearing shimmering silver while perched at a light-up piano and playing booming horror cliche Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Bach. Then his band break into You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween, replete with a three-storey-tall masked, hooded face behind them, the video screen inside it alternating between Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and other scary movie villains. It’s the most high-budget display of rock’n’roll camp – yet the night will get madder from here.

Outside this near-60,000 crowd, Muse aren’t necessarily the coolest band in the world any more. It was as early as 2007 that the Devon trio ascended to this grandiose level: after megahits from Supermassive Black Hole to Starlight meshed pop-rock drama with calls for revolution just vague enough that both the left and right could rally behind them, they became the first band to sell out the new Wembley Stadium. Since then though, hit-and-miss albums such as last year’s Will of the People have dented what was previously a bulletproof reputation for top-notch anthem-making.

Fortunately, from 2007 to 2023, one thing remains consistent: Muse gigs revel in the sublimely ridiculous. Following You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween’s spooky pomp, Bellamy introduces Uprising by playing its synth melody on a Nintendo Power Glove attached to a suit coated in LEDs. We Are Fucking Fucked has its juvenile title complemented by the kind of production a 10-year-old on a sugar rush would mastermind: fire spews from the stage so frequently that it would overstimulate a pyromaniac. Then, finally, the encore of Kill Or Be Killed and Knights of Cydonia is backed by a blow-up bust of Satan so massive that its arms extend beyond the stadium stage.

Sixteen years deep into filling football fields, Muse understand the assignment more than almost every other rock band. More is more and, even after feeding Lyon two hours of overblown theatre, they achieve the meteoric feat of making a 25-song extravaganza feel too short.

Music and concerts, music and concerts | concert review: british rockers muse go for it with bonkers target center show.

A man jumps while playing bass guitar on a stage. Behind him, another person plays a guitar, and another man plays on a keyboard.

Maximalist British rock trio Muse returned to Minneapolis’ Target Center Sunday night for their first local concert in nearly a decade.

What have they been up to since we last saw them? Well, singer/guitarist Matt Bellamy has fallen out of the tabloids after splitting with his fiance Kate Hudson in 2014. (They reportedly remain friendly and share parental duties for their son.) He’s also abandoned his belief in conspiracy theories, which was always a stain on the group. As for prolific bassist Chris Wolstenholme, he’s added two more kids with his second wife and took in two more from her previous relationship, bringing his brood to a total of 10.

As for their music, Muse is touring on the back of their ninth album, last year’s “Will of the People.” The band’s label wanted a greatest hits collection, but Bellamy decided instead to make a record of new songs that sound like they’re already hits. As such, the 10 tracks — most of which they aired live Sunday — sound like snapshots from Muse’s past works, which dabble in everything from prog rock to electronic dance music.

When Muse hits the mark, they craft thrilling, dramatic miniature epics that sound custom-made for budget-busting blockbuster movies. Think “Hysteria,” “Supermassive Black Hole,” “Time Is Running Out” or “Knights of Cydonia,” all four of which proved to be highlights Sunday night. Unfortunately, the band’s misses manage to somehow come off as both overheated and underbaked at the same time, which describes the bulk of “Will of the People.”

In concert, though, Muse manages to sell the lesser stuff thanks to their sheer strength of will and a performance style best described as everything, everywhere, all at once. Sunday night, the band’s stage shot streamers, confetti and fire, with a dazzling array of lights, lasers and fog adding to the atmosphere. All of it served one over-the-top number after another in a blur of crush and grind. (That said, their totally magical take on 2012’s “Madness” offered brief relief from the clamor.)

Bellamy, Wolstenholme, drummer Dominic Howard and new touring member Dan Lancaster tore through every song as if it was the last. Bellamy’s voice is as terrific as it’s ever been, and he can still effortlessly slip into falsetto on the turn of a dime. Bellamy, backed by Lancaster, makes a ton of noise, but Wolstenholme’s muscular playing ensures he never gets lost in the mix. The bassist really went for it during the utterly thrilling “Uprising” near the end of a totally bonkers and wildly entertaining evening.

Somewhere between when the robotic trombonists marched onstage and the four-story-tall cyborg/skeleton monster hovered over the band, one thing became clear:

This might be the best rock concert the Bay Area witnesses all year.

Talk about a thrill ride.

Muse took the stage at Oracle Arena in Oakland around 9:20 p.m. March 9 and would spend the better part of two hours delivering a pure rock ‘n’ roll spectacle, filled with amazing special effects, dynamic performances, some two dozen solid songs and plenty of confetti.

Now, the powerhouse British act — consisting of vocalist-guitarist Matt Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard — is usually pretty great in concert. Yet, this show — part of the sci-fi/fantasy-themed Simulation Theory World Tour — is special even by Muse’s high standards.

Here's how @muse starts show at @OracleArena @MattBellamy pic.twitter.com/3r1k4Z00Or — Jim Harrington (@jimthecritic) March 10, 2019

It’s a sweeping production, which captivates from start to finish. The visuals are stunning, combining to create a towering futuristic world that grows more intriguing as the night progresses. Plus, the set list is stellar, showcasing Muse’s eight-album catalog in a way that underscores that the band deserves to someday be a first-ballot inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Watching the band deliver one amazing moment after another in Oakland, I was deeply reminded of some of rock’s all-time greats.

Mighty @MattBellamy and @muse pic.twitter.com/S6HfEx0LQC — Jim Harrington (@jimthecritic) March 10, 2019

Indeed, it’s amazing how much Muse shares in common with the legends of the genre. The band is as ambitious as Pink Floyd, as powerful as Led Zeppelin and, at times, as heavy as Black Sabbath. The musicians can handle an anthem as well as U2, be as artsy as Radiohead, and even toss in a little Prince-style funk on occasion.

And Muse was all those things, plus so much more, in Oakland, without ever coming across as inauthentic or a copycat.

And then there’s Bellamy, who — in terms of pure talent and range — might be the best rock vocalist to come along since Freddie Mercury of Queen.

We will b victorious @muse @MattBellamy @OracleArena pic.twitter.com/6uWFtQQilg — Jim Harrington (@jimthecritic) March 10, 2019

The group strongly showcased the tour’s namesake, especially in the first half of the show, with six of the first 10 tracks of the night coming off Muse’s eighth studio album, “Simulation Theory.”

The new songs held up incredibly well next to the classics, the powerful arena-rocker “Uprising” and the funky feet-mover “Supermassive Black Hole,” as the trio and its wild cast of accompanying characters — the robotic trombonists, folks in hazmat suits, spacey “Tron”-like travelers — delighted the full house of appreciative fans, who were on their feet throughout the show.

One of the highlights off the new album was “Thought Contagion,” delivered by Bellamy as a horde of something resembling space zombies followed him out on the catwalk that stretched from the big main stage to the smaller secondary stage placed halfway across the arena floor. Another was the gospel-flavored “Dig Down,” which the band performed in a stripped-down, acoustic-driven setting from the secondary stage.

Everything the band attempted worked — and worked very well — including when Bellamy went out into the crowd to touch hands during “Mercy” and then sang to a skull in his hand, like Hamlet talking to poor Yorick, during “Take a Bow.”

Dig down @MattBellamy @muse pic.twitter.com/nD8uSekbcj — Jim Harrington (@jimthecritic) March 10, 2019

Just when you thought the band had completely emptied its bag of nifty tricks — and, most certainly, it’s confetti cannons — Muse unveiled a giant inflatable monster that towered some four stories over the stage, waving one sharp claw at the musicians and showing its teeth in menacing fashion.

It might have the coolest prop since Pink Floyd (or, at least, Roger Waters) built The Wall.

What a night — one that these fans will likely be talking about for years to come.

  1. How is Muse live? Your experiences (newer concerts) : r/Muse

2019 - Simulation Theory tour, got to go to their second show so going in without setlist or production spoilers was nice. Obviously much more of a show than my first. Sound was great, production and set effects were awesome. I sprung for one of the premium tickets which got me exclusive merch and early entry for first dibs at merch.

I've only been a fan of Muse for about less than a year now and I'm really hoping I'll get to see them live someday. Every time I watch a live performance I think to myself "damn I wish I was there", and I'm terrified that the opportunity will never come because I'm young and broke and I live in Canada where bands only come to Toronto and Vancouver.

  4. Will they go on tour in 2024? : r/Muse

So just wondering whether that will be next year or if I'll have to wait a bit more. Maybe. They did that US tour with 30STM in 2017. It wasn't an album tour. We'll all find out at the same time. Nargh. Maybe a festival or two, but the tour is now over. The next time they'll tour will be with a new album. They might as it's their 30th ...
