Caroline Rhea is back on the stand-up trail

The funniest moments during stand-up are almost always extemporaneous. Expect Caroline Rhea to provide plenty of off the cuff comedy when she performs Friday and Saturday at the Spokane Comedy Club.

“I could never be one of those comedians who just delivers a rote set,” Rhea said. “I look at a show at a comedy club to be like a dinner party. It’s live entertainment so I live in that moment.”

Rhea, 58, will deliver prepared material, but the charismatic actress, who was once described by a critic as the Meryl Streep of Disney television shows, is at her best when engaging the audience.

“It’s so much fun,” Rhea said. “That’s what I missed from all of the time I was not doing stand-up.”

The Quebec City native, who played a supporting role on the hit series “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” took a hiatus while pregnant with her daughter, Ava, who was born in 2008.

“There is no comedy club that’s as interesting as my daughter,” Rhea said. “I didn’t want to miss out on her early years.”

When Ava was a tyke Rhea scored voiceover work for Disney’s “Phineas and Ferb.”

“I was fortunate,” Rhea said. “That all worked out for me. ”

Rhea, who is preparing for a stand-up spot on “The Tonight Show,” would love to use that material but she has been compelled to craft fresh bits. “I have four hours of material in my head but some goes way back,” Rhea said. “I had to come up with new and relevant material and I have.”

Rhea’s teen is often her inspiration.

“My daughter used to like what I did on television when she was younger but in order for me to get her approval now I have to be in a remake of ‘Fight Club’ with Brad Pitt,” Rhea cracked. “It’s funny how things have changed. When I was my daughter’s age I remember saying to my best friend, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we could see each other on the phone?’ That would have been like ‘The Jetsons’ to me.”

It’s difficult for Rhea to appease her lone child. “I grovel for her approval,” Rhea said. “It’s like she’s the queen and I’m the peasant. I’m watching a documentary on adolescents called ‘How to Raise your Dragon.’”

Rhea, who lives in Los Angeles, spends every summer in Maine with her two sisters and their children. “It’s a wonderful thing to be able to do since we all live together each year,” Rhea said. “We’re all adults and we’re in our 50s and we have the best time with each other.”

It’s not surprising that Rhea’s siblings are also humorous. “My one sister said that after looking in my daughter’s room that Ava lives like a rock star who has no fear of losing her deposit,” Rhea said.

Rhea will also joke about living in Los Angeles. “L.A. is the one place where a doctor says, ‘I’ll have to look at your chart’ and they mean your astrological chart. ‘Oh cancer,’ the doctor will say. And it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, cancer.’ And he’s talking about my cancer rising.”

And then there are the social media bits. “Women in L.A. are so small that their Instagram photos should say ‘Actual size.’ ”

Rhea is still sad over the recent death of Olivia Newton-John. Rhea appeared on the provocative television series “Sordid Lives,” which starred Newton-John as a lesbian country singer.

“That was such a great experience,” Rhea said. “I remember my father, who was dying at the time, saying, ‘Honey, you have to play this part. You’re never going to get a part on a show that is so well written.’ And he was right. I remember sitting between Olivia and (actress) Rue McClanahan and I couldn’t believe that I was between these two icons. My inner-14-year old was freaking out! It was such a great series and an amazing movie.”

Rhea wasn’t in the film, which came out in 2000. Delta Burke played her part but opted not to do the series.

“I was lucky enough to get the part on the show,” Rhea said. “I’m so glad I had the opportunity to be part of ‘Sordid Lives.’ You should see the show. It was like ‘Desperate Housewives’ in a Texas trailer park.”

“Sordid Lives,” which aired for just one season in 2008, didn’t have much of an audience but “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” was very popular and Rhea still hears from fans about her portrayal of Hilda.

“I was just in Montreal for the Just for Laughs festival and I heard the word legend describe me because of that show but when someone calls you a legend you feel like you’re 100. Also, if you’re over 45 don’t tell me you grew up with me on ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch.’ Hey, I’m not complaining. Being on that show was wonderful.”

But now the focus is stand-up for Rhea. “I’m no longer in a ‘Moma,’ a mother coma,” Rhea said. “I’m back in clubs and things couldn’t be better.”

Jay Leno and Adam Carolla teach the art of being yourself onstage at Comedy Fantasy Camp

It’s a dream come true for every aspiring stand-up comedian or comedy writer. This Thursday through Sunday, the creators of the Rock N Roll Fantasy Camp present the very first Comedy Fantasy Camp in Hollywood. This four-day retreat hosted by Jay Leno and Adam Carolla at the Improv club will feature many other comics and comedy writers, along with workshops on sitcom writing, podcasting and the art of stand-up.

“The idea for this came to me because I was always intrigued about the Rock N Roll Fantasy Camp,” Carolla said during a recent interview with Leno and Rock N Roll Fantasy Camp founder and Chief Executive David Fishof. “I was fascinated by all these big-name rock stars who would do the camp. I don’t play an instrument but I do stand-up, and they do a baseball fantasy camp as well, so why not do a comedy fantasy camp?” he said.

After talking this over with Fishof, Carolla said the idea finally came to fruition. “I could do something like that,” Fishof said. “We are so excited it’s now about to happen. And we have a lot of special guests who will be talking about so many of the different parts of comedy. For four days people will immerse themselves in the world of comedy by learning from some of the best in the industry,” Fishof said.

Carolla and Leno agree that this event won’t necessarily teach people with no sense of humor to be funny. “We’ll really just teaching people to be themselves and be relatable to the audience,” Leno said. “You can’t teach people to be funny, but you can help them to be comfortable in their own skin. Then the jokes can flow naturally from there.”

“Jay is right, it’s about being comfortable with who you are,” Carolla said, relating how he sees stand-up comedy compared to music. “With music you can hear yourself and know if you have any talent. I’m pretty sure Jimi Hendrix knew he was damn good at playing guitar when he played by himself. But with stand-up comedy you can’t really hear yourself, you really need an audience to give you feedback.”

Man with white hair standing on a TV sound stage

Leno agreed. “That’s absolutely, true. Also, stand-up comedy is not like music in a way when you think about this,” he said. “It’s not like everyone can play guitar like Jimmy Hendrix. But, anyone can talk into a microphone, right? So people think all the time, they can be a stand-up comedian. But it’s not as easy as just talking. Most comedians are writers, you have to be a writer and write your own jokes.”

Comedy is all about evoking laughter and smiles, so neither Leno nor Carolla is concerned with cancel culture or political division, and agree there are no rules or conventions; each comedian has to come up with his own. “In terms of cancel culture, and all the division, I personally just drop politics entirely from my set,” Leno said. “Now, I sometimes do tell political jokes that aren’t about any specific politicians, but I shy way from anything else. When I did the ‘Tonight Show,’ I really took pride in people not knowing my politics. I loved that, because my goal was not to lecture or judge or throw my politics in your face, it was to get a laugh,” he said.

Storyectomy: The Crow grants center stage to storytelling, comedy and cancer

Carolla shared his philosophy on censorship and comedy by saying he succeeds by ignoring cancel culture. “ I could care less about any of that. My No. 1 rule is you can talk about anything, as long as it’s funny,” he said. “I find myself talking about politics and other so-called no-fly-zone issues that other people won’t talk about, but they have to be funny. If it’s funny, then game on, it’s forgiven. It needs to end with a zinger or a punchline, because if it ain’t funny then it doesn’t work.”

At the four day event, Carolla and Leno will be joined by stand-up comedians including Harland Willams, Alonzo Bodden, Caroline Rhea and others, plus special surprise guests, along with writers from such sitcoms as “Friends,” “2 Broke Girls, “The King of Queens,” “The Goldbergs” and more.

Leno advises stand-ups to resist automatically turning to profanity or insults, especially when dealing with hecklers. “I’m not necessarily against using profanity, but I just think using profanities more than you need to is just being lazy. And, I don’t get hecklers often, but every comedian has dealt with them at some point,” he said. “Comedians should realize that as a stand-up comic, you can bring someone down in the crowd pretty easily. But when you destroy a heckler you destroy a part of the audience, and they think as a group. So it’s probably better if you can let them down easy without snapping their neck. For example, this one time I had a big, huge, fat guy heckling me at a show, and so I called him out and made fun of his tie.”

Man standing on stage with glasses and a microphone

Carolla’s advice is simple. “Usually your first impulse is the funniest when it comes to stand-up and writing comedy bits. But usually, the less words the better.”

“I agree 100% with that,” Leno said. “Humor is the economy of words. It’s using the least amount of words possible to get your point across and make people laugh. Nothing is harder than writing a joke. I meet comedians who will do anything to get out of writing jokes. Comedy has to come from a natural place. When you tell jokes, you‘ve really got to take the audience to a place where they don’t expect to go. The first five minutes of your act define who you are,” he said.

Leno and Carolla agree that this first of what is hoped to be an annual four-day comedy extravaganza in Hollywood could lead to bigger things for some of those who attend. “There’s going to be a showcase at the Improv in Hollywood to end the entire event,” Carolla said.

Fishof said he’s certain the Comedy Fantasy Camp will change peoples lives. “That’s my favorite part about these things, and I see it all the time at the Rock N Roll Fantasy Camp,” Fishof said. “These events do end up changing people’s lives. People do better at their jobs, they do better with their families, become better fathers. Most people want to be rock stars, or in this case they want to be stand-up comedians, but they can’t because they have to work at their crappy day jobs or become lawyers, teachers, or whatever. This is their fantasy. It’s a life-changing experience for lots of people.”

'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' 's Caroline Rhea Shares Emotional Story Behind Her Daughter's Birth: She's My 'Miracle Baby'

Actress Caroline Rhea opens up about learning she was expecting her first child at the age of 44: when "you get to be a mother, it's all worth it"

Writer-Reporter, PEOPLE

Caroline Rhea does not take motherhood for granted.

The actress, 53, opens up in the new issue of PEOPLE about learning she was expecting her first child at the age of 44 — and the heartbreaking circumstances that surrounded her pregnancy.

After years of struggling to conceive with her then-boyfriend and fellow comedian Costaki Economopoulos while serving as host on the third season of The Biggest Loser , Rhea received some devastating news.

“My parents got diagnosed with cancer one week apart,” she tells PEOPLE.

Rhea’s mom, Margery, was diagnosed with breast cancer and her dad, David, with lung cancer. David, an OB/GYN, died 10 months later; Margery lived another six years.

“The month after my dad died is when [my daughter] Ava was conceived naturally, at a considerably older age than most people,” she says.

And the timing was not lost on the star. “She’s like my little miracle baby,” Rhea adds. “All the bad stuff, and all the good stuff, it all leads you to the place that you’re meant to be. When it’s something that results in a child being born, and you get to be a mother, it’s all worth it.”

After Ava, now 8½, was born, the Sabrina the Teenage Witch alum dropped everything to focus on raising her daughter.

“The first five years, I didn’t go on the road at all,” she says. “I was like, ‘I’m not gonna wait this long and have a baby and then leave.’ ”

And while Rhea still takes on the occasional role — she’s currently starring in A Very Sordid Wedding and frequently appears on the Alec Baldwin -led Match Game — she still prefers to nestle at home with Ava.

“I love how hilariously funny my daughter is,” Rhea says. “She’s the best company.”

Sabrina star says she 'grew up listening to Billy Connolly' ahead of Glasgow show

"I grew up with my parents laughing hysterically to Billy Connelly albums," Caroline Rhea says.

The actress and stand-up comedian, who played Aunt Hilda on 90s TV show Sabrina the Teenage Witch, will perform her stand-up show I Identify as a Witch in Glasgow later this month as part of the Glasgow International Comedy Festival (GICF).

Born in Canada, Caroline spent her summers growing up visiting Scotland , calling it her "part-time childhood home" and says she was a fan of the Big Yin.

"When I got to meet him, I was completely starstruck and he couldn’t have been nicer," she reveals.

"He was totally lovely."

As a child, Caroline spent a lot of time on Islay where her grandparents had emigrated to Canada, as well as Skye and Jura.

"It’s funny as a Canadian we would go to these freezing cold places for summer,” she laughs.

"My mother and I would drive around Scotland in the summertime.

"I’ve spent so many happy times there.

"When I land there, I immediately feel like I’m home."

While having a stand-up career spanning 35 years, Caroline is most recognised by many as Hilda Spellman from Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

She says she named her stand-up show I Identify as a Witch because "every day of my life someone calls me Aunt Hilda".

Starring in the sitcom from its premiere in 1996, Caroline says she first realised how big the show was while on a trip to Edinburgh.

She explained: "The show had been on for a couple of years, and we had no idea how popular it was because we were always working and making it.

"But I remember being in Edinburgh and I was buying sneakers and this guy said ‘where’s the wee cat?’ and I was like ‘ooh, you watch the show’."

While Caroline describes herself as a "comedian first and foremost", she says getting to be on a show like Sabrina was like "winning the lottery".

"It was sort of like getting to be an ambassador when you were on that show," she says.

"I would go to children’s hospitals, and they were so happy.

"It’s probably within the top 10 greatest gifts of my life getting to be on that show.

"It made kids happy; I don’t know what more you could possibly ask for."

She continued: "During Covid, they started playing it again so there’s four generations who have seen that show which is kind of bizarre.

"It’s like winning the lottery when you get to be on a show that’s still on and people love."

I Identify as a Witch will cover Caroline’s life in the spotlight making it an unmissable show for fans of Sabrina the Teenage Witch which she starred in for seven years, as well as Disney’s Phineas and Ferb where she is the voice of Linda Flynn-Fletcher.

"My show is very interactive," Caroline says, "I always think of it like I’m serving dinner and you’re my guest.

"I talk about the show [Sabrina] and the experience of being on it, and then all the mystical, magical things that have happened in my life.

"I would say that’s the theme of it but mostly it’s really stand-up.

"And my hilarious meeting with Taylor Swift, that’s a big chunk of it."

The tour was a major hit in the USA before touring globally with stops in Australia and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, but Caroline says she’s looking forward to bringing it in front of a Glasgow crowd.

Coming to Scotland in the 1970s, she says Glasgow was described as "terrifying place" but when she finally visited for the first time she thought "it’s so beautiful here".

"You’re sort of cheeky, but hilarious though," she admits.

"[As a comedian] You have to bring your best A-game because that’s a very smart crowd."

Caroline Rhea’s I Identify as a Witch will be at Giffnock’s Eastwood Park Theatre on Saturday, March 16, Greenock’s Beacon Arts Centre on Sunday, March 17 and the Oran Mor on Friday, March 22.
