Turkey is a country filled with rich history, natural beauty, and the intertwining of European and Asian cultures. Leaving behind the beautiful mosques and bustling markets of Istanbul, when you head down South to the Turquoise Coast , you will find a stunning stretch of charming coastal towns.

What is a Blue Cruise?

Blue Cruise, also known as Blue Voyage, describes the popular activity of sailing and cruising in a traditional Turkish Gullet along the Turkish Riviera. The gullets are large wooden sailing vessels comprising several cabins and a long open deck and are unique to the area of Bodrum and Marmaris. 

The term blue in Blue Cruise is used very appropriately to describe the turquoise waters that you will experience on the journey. The Blue cruise commonly sets sail for 4-7 days, allowing you to explore more remote islands and discover the historical ruins that remain in the area.

It is the ideal way to kick back and enjoy the crystal clear waters, and at the same time experience the beauty that the Turkish Riviera has to offer .

Why is a Blue Cruise Special?

Blue Cruises are one of the best ways to explore the Turkish Riviera. Not only is it affordable, but it allows you to access many of the more remote sites and islands. On the 12 Islands cruise, you will explore many islands that would otherwise be impossible to reach. On the Bodrum to Fethiye cruise, you can also reach many historical ruins like Cleopatra’s Bath. 

Your days are spent relaxing on the turquoise waters, going for a dip, eating, and some hiking. On these cruises, you will also get to enjoy some of the freshest food Turkey has to offer. Fish, caught the same day, are grilled and served with an assortment of salads and vegetables. After the meal, you can admire the sunset while sipping on a cup of Turkish coffee or tea. 

Time stands still while on the blue cruise, and all worries melt away. For 4-7 days, the only thing you need to think about is what is the best way to relax: Sitting on the deck? Floating on a paddleboard? Hiking on the island?

The Best Time to Blue Cruise

The best time to do the Blue Cruise is during late spring, summer, or early autumn. 

During late spring from May to June, the weather is more comfortable and not too hot, however, the water has not had the chance to fully warm up yet. For that reason, it can be a little chilly to swim, but very comfortable on deck.

In the summer from July to August, it is the peak season. The air temperature rises to 32C and the water will also feel quite warm. This is the busiest season and tends to be more expensive as well.

In Autumn, from September to early October, the water has had the entire summer to heat up so the water temperature is at its warmest. The weather is pleasant like in late spring, and the crowds have started to dissipate.

For that reason, September is often considered the ideal month to go Blue Cruising.

Where Are Blue Cruises Found in Turkey?

The main departure ports of Blue Cruises are Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Antalya .

The departure point will determine what type of Blue Cruise journey you will be taking. Some of the Blue cruises will do a point A to point B journey, whereas others will depart and return to Point A. For example, the 12 islands cruise leaves from Fethiye and returns 4 days later to Fethiye. 

If you are curious about point A to point B cruises, there are some from Marmaris to Fethiye, or Fethiye to Gocek, or Antalya to Kekova.

When speaking to the local captains, they recommended a point A to point A cruise instead of a point A to point B cruise since in the latter, you will spend a lot of time at sea driving the vessel instead of enjoying the water. 

We did the 12-island cruise leaving from Fethiye (point A to point A) and spent 90% of the day enjoying the water and the surrounding activities. Only about 30 minutes per day was spent driving the boat.

What to Expect Day to Day on The Blue Cruise

This section and the next will describe the 12 islands cruise since that is the one that we have the most experience with. We booked with My Blue Cruise but there many other providers .

When you wake up in the morning, breakfast is prepared for you and you enjoy it on the open deck of the vessel.

Next, you will have free time to enjoy the water. There is usually a paddleboard or kayak available, or you can simply lounge around and read a book on the vessel deck. After a few hours, you will get to enjoy a full lunch.

Normally after lunch, the boat will depart to change islands. The vessel will drive for around 30 minutes before anchoring down in a quiet cove. You will then have a chance for a quick dip before going on land to explore the island. Each island is different but there are usually some ancient ruins for you to discover.

After returning from the hike, you will be happy to go for another swim and maybe snorkel in the area to find fish.

Tired from the afternoon of activity, this is the perfect time to take a nap. Then comes dinner which is usually the biggest meal with fresh fish and meat. Finally, the evening is spent star gazing or getting an early night’s rest.

The subsequent days generally follow a similar schedule, however, each day you will get to enjoy a different cove and explore a new island.

Review of Our Experience on a Blue Cruise

We enjoyed the 4-day / 3-night, 12-island Blue Cruise leaving from Fethiye. 

After spending 3 days in Istanbul , and 5 days in Cappadocia , this was the perfect way to relax and unwind. Our experience during those days was incredible. At first, I felt like 4 days of relaxing on a boat might be too long or boring, but in the end, it exceeded all our expectations. 

Not only was the natural beauty of the islands and waters unmatched, but our experience onboard was equally amazing. The crew was so welcoming and spent time chatting with us, helping us with anything we needed, and even taught us their local dance. 

No matter the time of day, they had the biggest smiles on their faces. All our needs were taken care of by the crew so that we could be completely worry-free.

Each of the meals was so delicious and felt like truly home-cooked meals. With the combination of swimming, hiking, napping, sun tanning, and eating, by the end of the 4 days, I felt like a new person. 

If you are looking for a perfect way to unwind and explore the Turkish Riviera without any worries, this is definitely the best choice!

What is The Cost of a Blue Cruise?

The prices tend to range between 400USD-700USD, all-inclusive, depending on the length of the journey and the company. 

Our 4-day / 3-night cruise cost around 500€‎ per person, however, this was on one of the more luxurious gullets. The cost will overall depend on the length of the journey, and also the capacity of the gullet. 

Small gullets accommodate 6-10 passengers, medium gullets accommodate 10-20 passengers, and large gullets accommodate over 20 people. 

Our Gullet fit a maximum of 12 people which we found was perfect and provided everyone with a lot of free space. Most other companies take on 15-20 guests.

How to Get to The Blue Cruises

How to get to your Blue Cruise will depend on the port of departure. There are many Blue Cruises that leave from Fethiye so the nearest airport would be Dalaman. From there, you can take a taxi for 1 hour to reach the town of Fethiye.

We arrived at Fethiye by driving from Kas, which is a very charming coastal town. Read more about all the things to do in Kas in this article.

Please verify your port of departure and from there you can easily determine the best airport .

Where to go After a Blue Cruise?

After the Blue Cruise, if it ends in Fethiye, you have several options. 

You can explore the nearby town of Oludeniz and maybe try out the famed paragliding. 

If you go further East, you can arrive at the charming coastal town of Kas or a little further brings you to the birthplace of Santa Claus, Demre . 

Alternatively, if you want to explore a new culture, you can always take a ferry across to one of the islands of Greece (Rhodes). 

By heading west, you can discover Marmaris, the beautiful town filled with canals, or the archeological site of Ephesus which is one of the best ancient sites in Turkey . 

Finally, if you want to head back to the metropolis, then enjoy a couple of days exploring Istanbul or any of the other top Turkish cities .

Blue Cruising is one of the best ways to unwind and enjoy the Turkish Riviera. There are no words to describe the feeling of freedom while you cruise along the turquoise waters, watching the sunset on the horizon while enjoying a delicious Turkish meal. 

Although you can explore the coast by hopping from town to town along the Turkish Coast, there is truly something magical about spending several days floating on the Aegean Sea. Maybe it’s the gentle rocking of the waves, the blissful silence, or the sky full of stars, but all your worries just melt away.

So if you are contemplating doing a Blue Cruise, I would recommend it 100%.

What I Loved About my Blue Cruise of Mediterranean Turkey

A Blue Cruise on the Mediterranean Sea should be a definite on your Turkey travel itinerary. It’s a perfect way to enjoy the crystal-clear turquoise waters and stunning coastline all while having loads of adventure and enjoying boat life with a great group of people.

Below are the 4 things that made a Blue Cruise one of the greatest experiences I had in Turkey…

The Adventure

Hands down the most thrilling thing I did on my Fethiye to Olympos blue cruise was paragliding over Oludeniz Beach.

Being moderately scared of heights, I really had to talk myself up to this one, and standing on the top of 2,000 meter high Babadag Mountain preparing to take the jump was one of the more challenging things I have pushed myself through as of late.

However, get past all that and you’re flying, baby, and it feels amazing! All fear is erased as you glide seamlessly through the air and your eyes soak in the gorgeous views of Oludeniz and the Blue Lagoon.

Also near Oludeniz is a great spot for cliff jumping (another test of my fear of heights), but I figure if I can jump off of a 2,000 meter mountain, this little rock into water action should be nothing. Well, not exactly.

A lovely Russian lady from the boat offered to video tape my jump. I am ashamed to admit there is a 2 minute video prior to the actual video of my jump where I am just standing looking down into the crystal clear waters questioning how much I truly value my life… but then, deep breath, push off, and I’m dropping into the turquoise of the Blue Lagoon. Truly epic.

Maybe not quite as crazy as the previous two, but I also have to mention hiking in Butterfly Valley . Although it was summer and there weren’t as many butterflies as I’d hoped, albeit there were still quite a few, the hike up to the waterfall was really exhilarating.

I shed my flip flops and took to the rock barefoot getting really connected to the earth. It’s a great little workout heading up to the top and the early afternoon sun created some great lighting through the rocks and water perfect for nature photo ops.

No matter what your idea of adventure is, the blue cruise has something for everyone. Every day we had plenty of opportunities to get out into the beautiful Mediterranean waters for swimming and snorkeling. Thankfully, there were also plenty of activity to help work off the booze and food as continued below…

The awesome people on the boat made for a lot of the great times that we all had, but from meeting lots of people from other boats along the way, it seems that great minds think alike and the cruises just attract super fun people.

For a couple of nights, we just stayed on the boat and danced the night away to some killer beats. We set up a beer pong table at one point and had a pretty epic tournament (my partner and I did not win, unfortunately, but it was great fun). After having our fill of crazy fun times, we all slept it off on the deck under the stars.

One of the best parties was when we anchored down near Gokkaya Bay and hit up a nearby bar called Smuggler’s Inn. There were loads of fellow travelers from other cruise boats and it was a blast meeting new people. Everyone got along really well and we danced and drank the night away under a sky full of stars. A night of so many laughs and good times, I truly could never forget!

Food on a Blue Cruise of Mediterranean Turkey

I never imagined that food would be in my top favorites from this cruise. I mean, we are on a boat, so exactly how delicious can the cooking be in a small boat kitchen?

Really freakin’ delicious, that’s how. I did my Blue Cruise Turkey with Alaturka , and I have to give them major props all around for their crew, itinerary, and especially to the chef.

When we left for the cruise, the crew said they hoped none of us were on a diet because there was no way we were going to lose weight while on this cruise, and they were right. I couldn’t stop eating the spectacular meals the chef whipped up.

Every morning starts with a classic Turkish breakfast which, I have to say, is the greatest thing in the world – why do we not do this in our own countries? I fully plan to adopt this style of brekkie in my own life post-Turkey, that’s for certain.

Lunch is also a delicious sampling of traditional Turkish foods – eggplant and peppers cooked in tomato sauce, yogurt –based dips, locally-sourced fresh veggies served with rice and breads. Yum. Every afternoon there is a cay break with tea and coffee served with some cookies and pastries – a great way to refuel with all the activity of the day.

And, last but certainly not least, is BBQ dinners. The chef grilled up some mouthwatering freshly caught fish, lamb chops, and much more. The dinners were honestly some of the best food I’ve had and that’s saying something because I have eaten a lot of Turkish food in my day.

So yeah, no weight loss happened on the trip…but maybe with all the activities I came out even?

History and Culture

One of the historical highlights of the trip was cruising around the Sunken City, an ancient town that dates back 2,000 years to the Lycian period and was later destroyed by an earthquake. Now a World Heritage site, you can’t swim in the waters there, but cruising over it you still get some pretty cool views. T

he best part was going on land in Kekova and climbing up to Simena Castle , a well-preserved castle built by the Knights of Rhodes. Inside, don’t miss the smallest, cutest amphitheater in the world. The views from the top of the Sunken City, surrounding islands and Lycian tombs to the south were spectacular. Lots of photo ops here.

There are loads of opportunities to take in beautiful Turkish culture while on the cruise, but one of my favorites was when we stopped in Kas, a small fishing village .

I’m not super into shopping, but they had some of the most beautiful handcrafted jewelry here among many other locally made crafts and clothing. It was a surprising treat. Once you’ve shopped until you drop, there are several cute local cafes lining the streets where you can stop in to enjoy a Turkish coffee and some baklava.

St. Nicolas Island was also a great place combining a bit of history with one of the most magical sunsets of the trip. On the island are several churches dating back between 4 th and 6 th centuries AD , and what archaeologists believe is the location of the original tomb of St. Nicholas.

Mosey on up to the top, enjoying the historical ruins on your way, and find a spot to settle in as the sun paints the sky and sea below and slowly melts into the sloping hills in the background.

Blue Cruise in Turkey

The evocative term 'Blue Cruise' describes the marvellous cruise taken for several days along the bluest, clearest of seas along the Turkish coast. It covers the whole rich experience of bay hopping, swimming, snorkelling, walking ashore in the forest and on the hillsides, visiting villages, exploring the stones of ancient sites, but above all, living and relaxing on a beautiful wooden boat away from it all.

The Blue Cruise was the name coined for the traditional cruise route along the South West coast of Turkey between Bodrum and Antalya , famous for its distance far from modern life. With unspoiled nature and the most remarkably clear clean turquoise blue seas of the Aegean and Mediterranean these are some of the safest waters to swim in the world, tideless and calm, with the mostly friendly and benign inhabitants such as dolphins, turtles, shy fish and wary birds.

The Blue Cruise is synonymous with the Bodrum gulet , and really has to be experienced in those beautifully shaped, spacious, wooden boats crafted in Bodrum by boatbuilders who have learnt their craft from previous generations. The generous deck space has been adapted to provide the ideal sunbathing, lounging and dining space on deck. Modern technology now allows for unimaginable degrees of luxury compared to the basic fishing and spongediving boats used by the early pioneers of the 'Blue Cruise'.

The actual name was coined by Azra Erhat , the Turkish woman writer and translator who was one of the pioneering group of artists and writers who came to Bodrum to sail with the writer Cevat Şakır Kabaağaçlı. He had first been sent into exile in Bodrum in the early 1920’s from Istanbul when Bodrum was considered to be at the ends of the earth, so remote with poor road access. But Cevat Şakır loved Bodrum and first talked the fishermen of Bodrum into taking him, then his friends out on their small wooden boats to explore the coast so then he came to be called by his pen name ‘The Fisherman of Halicarnassus’. Erhat described these journeys in her 1962 travel guide book " Mavi Yolculuk " (Blue Cruise), and as she was translating Homer and other classics into Turkish, she and her fellow travellers were fascinated by the rich trove of remains of ancient cities and civilisations along the Gulf of Gokova . The 'Blue Cruise' was first an expedition by boat exploring the history and nature of the coast.

The Blue Cruise remains a very specific type of cruise and locality: that of the being very relaxed on crewed motoring gulets sailing along the Turkish Aegean and Mediterranean coasts between Bodrum and Antalya. It also refers to the cruise following a certain itinerary, looking not so much for harbor ports to go on tours and shopping, but to really get away from it all, playing in the water, walking ashore, perhaps exploring the stones of ancient sites or villages, and above all, eating well with all the food prepared and served by the crew.

1. Fethiye to Antalya

Day 1, Arrival Friday:  Arrival in Antalya or Dalaman, depending on the direction, transfer to the yacht. Dinner. 

Day 2, First day:  After breakfast, the anchor will be hauled in and your Blue Voyage can begin. Departure, depending on the wind direction, to swim in the former harbor of the ancient city of Phaselis . The next few days you look for the wind, so you can enjoy sailing. A beautiful bay is chosen for lunch, and later for dinner and sleeping.

Day 3 to 6, Week: The detailed route depends on the wind and weather conditions and is determined daily by the skipper a nd the guests. You will visit places like the island Suluada, the sunken city of Simena , Kaputaş Beach , and t he harbor of Kaş.

Day 7, Arrival: Sail from Ölüdeniz Beach, the beautiful Butterfly Valley, and Saint Nicholas Island to the marina in Fethiye and spend the night in the harbor city.

Day 8, Departure: Transfer to the airport or to an extension hotel in Turkey.

2. Lycian Coast 

Day 1, Arrival Sunday: Arrival in Antalya or Dalaman. Transfer to the harbor in Kemer or Göcek depending on the direction. Dinner.

Day 2, First day: Sailing to Suluada Island with a stop at the ancient harbor of Phaselis for swimming. The day will end at the sunken city of Simena.

Day 3, Kaş: Sailing between the Greek island of Kastelorizo and the Turkish harbor town, Kaş. Night in the marina in Kaş with dinner at one of the restaurants.

If you’re looking for the ultimate in relaxing travel experiences, consider a blue cruise on a Turkish gulet   off Turkey’s Turquoise Coast . Along the coast, a host of “ Mavi Yolculuk ,” (Blue Voyage) options are available at budget prices, making a blue cruise within easy reach of most travellers.

My Blue Cruise

Climbing off the gangplank of the Seaborn Legend at its berth in Fethiye Harbour, we were greeted by a freshly washed, aged teak deck and a request to remove our shoes. Remaining barefooted for the next four days while on board was the first rule of our blue cruise. The others, we were soon to discover, were to totally relax, swim to our hearts’ content in the warm Mediterranean each time we dropped anchor, and enjoy the delicious meals prepared by the crew.

There are many companies offering day trips and longer cruises off Turkey’s spectacular Turquoise Coast, regarded by many as one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. We chose My Blue Cruise as the timing of our four-night cruise connected perfectly with plans to visit the neighbouring Greek island of Rhodes. Besides, the Gulf of Göcek sounded like the perfect destination. Its protected coves, bays, and islands promised quiet mooring and swimming spots. And the forested hills and mountains peppered with ancient sites and panoramic viewpoints offered interesting hiking prospects.

A Turkish gulet

Cruising on a replica of a traditional wooden gulet is a highlight of any visit to Turkey. Originally fishing boats, these handcrafted vessels have evolved into the gulets offering holiday cruises that are a feature of Turkey’s burgeoning tourist industry. According to Wikipedia , the Turkish word gulet (pronounced GOO-let) is a loanword from Venetian gołéta (modern Italian goletta ), itself a loanword from French gouëlette (present-day spelling goélette ), meaning ‘schooner.’

The Seaborn Legend is a 30-metre sleek double-masted creation of teak and mahogany. The beautifully weathered teak requires no maintenance beyond what the salt water and sea air have provided. Technically a ketch, the vessel has fallen into the ‘gulet’ category of wooden vessels offering blue cruises.

Built in Fethiye in 2004, its heavy sturdy body is capable of handling the unpredictable winds and waves of the Mediterranean. It boasts eight double/twin cabins with ensuite bathrooms for 14 passengers, and additional space for the crew of three. At times, the cabins seemed superfluous. We spent entire days on the spacious deck lounging on the comfortable mattresses or sitting around the heavy mahogany tables.

Besides, most passengers preferred to sleep on deck. There’s something surreal about admiring a star-studded night sky while drifting off to sleep to the gentle sound of waves lapping against the boat. Waking up to the soft sunrise colours emerging from behind the multiple layers of mountains is an exhilarating start to the day.

Be prepared to relax

Our first day was spent reading, writing, swimming, snorkelling, eating, and getting to know the crew and other passengers.

The three-man Turkish crew consisted of a skipper, alternate skipper, and deckhand, but most of the time the roles seemed interchangeable. Ali, İlyas, and Hilmi juggled tasks associated with sailing and mooring the boat, ferrying passengers and supplies in the zodiac, and preparing the most amazing meals.

The ringing of a bell announced meal and snack breaks. After tasting our first lunch of several delicious vegetarian dishes, there were no stragglers to the supper table. It might have been thoughts of the culinary experience awaiting us. Or, perhaps it was because our appetites received a boost from the intoxicatingly fresh sea air and swimming in the refreshing turquoise-hued water. Besides, Ilyas provided a hint of what was to come by firing up the barbeque attached to the deck rail for grilling fresh aubergines, peppers, and sea bass.

Interesting mix of passengers

The passengers were an interesting group. Alpa, a restructuring consultant, was from Britain. Flavia, a homemaker, and Niklaus, a physicist and engineer, joined us from Switzerland. Chloe, a vintner, and Dana, a marine biologist, came from New Zealand. Jess was a journalist from the USA. Neus, a pharmacist from Spain, was working with Doctors Without Borders near the Turkish border with Syria. My gang of union representatives and retired union representatives came from Canada. On the second day, we were joined by Jordine, a dancer from Australia. Also joining us for one night was Terry, a travel writer from Britain, and Ömer, a tour operator from Turkey.

We were actually on three overlapping cruises. Three passengers enjoyed the previous four-night cruise so much that they signed up for an extra night. Four passengers were on an inaugural one-week ‘yoga tour’ with two yoga classes each day facilitated by Marija, an archeologist from Serbia, and Eva, a nurse from Switzerland.

A varied yet relaxed schedule

Over the course of the four days, we adopted a pattern of eating, swimming, reading, and writing, interspersed with the occasional nap or hike. I found myself spending hours admiring the scenery, and watching schools of fish dart around the hull. Or waiting for the heads of sea turtles to break the surface of the water, and watching goats negotiate the steep rocky hillsides.

Watches were removed prior to the first swim and never put back. They weren’t needed, as time was set to the rhythms of the boat, twice daily yoga classes, and the delicious meals emerging from the galley. Coffee, tea, and biscuits appeared three times each day between meals. Other drinks were available on an honour system with accounts settled at the end of the cruise.

Occasionally, enterprising entrepreneurs would pull up alongside to peddle an assortment of merchandise such as scarves, jewellery, beachwear, and ice cream.

Our flexible itinerary was in the hands of the crew, achieving just the right balance between relaxing, swimming, hiking, exploring as much of the impressive coastline as possible, and picking up and dropping off passengers.

Interesting landings

Lycian rock tombs from the 4th century BC overlook sheltered bays. They beckon the adventurous to climb to panoramic viewpoints to admire the Seaborn Legend from other vantage points. Or, given the number of yogis on board, to demonstrate one’s prowess by precariously striking a yoga pose on a rocky ledge.

On the third day, we anchored in the picturesque cove of Ağ Limani, with its pebbled beach and crystal clear water. Following in the footsteps of Romans who moored their wooden sailing ships here, we climbed a pine-shaded track to the ruins of ancient Lydea (1200 – 500 BC). Along the way, we explored sarcophagi, temple walls, terracing, and cisterns from the Roman and Byzantine periods. Living nearby was a family of nomadic yörük people who eke out a living as goat herders, honey gatherers, and olive growers. We were served sage tea in a shelter adorned with colourful Turkish rugs surrounded by wares for sale – honey, wooden spoons and utensils crafted from olive wood, necklaces, and goat bells decorated with nazar boncuğu ( evil eye ).

The verdict?

A blue cruise on a Turkish gulet offers the ultimate balance between relaxation and adventure. However, be prepared to take the gentle rocking of the boat with you to your next destination. In our case, it was to the Greek island of Rhodes. It might have been the close proximity of our Rhodes apartment to the sound of the Mediterranean below, but for the next few days, I experienced the gentle swaying of the Seaborn Legend . And I didn’t mind it one bit.

Our blue cruise was booked through Tribe Travel . The agency also organized a van charter for our group of five from Dalman airport to Fethiye. In Fethiye, we stayed at the Yacht Hotel, a short 50-metre walk from Tribe Travel and within easy walking distance of the harbour.

Here are some packing tips:

• Carry as little luggage as possible, preferably a soft-sided carry-on sized bag. Space in the cabin is limited.
• Swimsuit. If you’re restricted by weight and space, forget a swimsuit cover up. A peştamal (hamam towel) is provided to each passenger. Made with Turkish cotton, a peştamal is colourful, absorbent, and fast drying.
• Hat and sunscreen.
• Toiletries. Only liquid hand soap is provided.
• Insect repellent will be handy for hikes.
• Comfortable walking shoes with a good tread.
• Turkish Lira will be needed to purchase merchandise from the entrepreneurs who pull up alongside the boat, or those visited on a hike.
• A book or e-reader.
• Bring a notebook and pen if you like to write, or a tablet if you don’t mind writing in the shade. I also carried a small notebook and pen for collecting email addresses to exchange photos, and record recommendations and notes.
• Charge electronics fully before boarding. The only time they can be recharged is when the generator is started up for an hour or so twice a day. An external battery pack may be handy.
• A pocket shopping bag can be useful for keeping stuff together while on deck (e.g., water bottle, camera, hamam towel, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, book, notebook, pen).

A Quick Guide to Budget Gulet Sailing in Turkey for Backpackers

You won’t find a better way to explore Turkey’s Turquoise Coast than from the decks of a gulet (a traditional wooden boat). But did you know you can experience a blue cruise like this on a backpacker’s budget? You can sail the stunning Turkish Riviera from Fethiye to Olympos on a 4-day cabin charter from just $260. That’s crazy cheap.

Imagine this…

Watching a display of shooting stars as you drift off to sleep, no noise but the waves lapping against the side of the boat. Waking up to the sunrise in a secluded cove, to the smell of pine and herbs and honey. Padding barefoot along the deck, bracing yourself for a dive into water that sparkles like gemstones. Afterwards, you plot the day’s adventures over a breakfast spread of tomato, cheese, cucumber, olives, coffee, bread, and jams.

The catch? For the cheapest prices, you’ll have to share a boat and can expect the facilities to be basic. Oh, but it’s worth it though.

WHY TAKE A FETHIYE-OLYMPOS BLUE CRUISE

I used to be scared of the sea .  One of my first memories is of being on a ferry aged 3, afraid to go anywhere near the guardrail. My mind boggled at how anyone could think boats were safe.

A gulet cruise in Turkey converted me.

It was an ex’s idea. We were in Fethiye , heading for Olympos on the Turquoise Coast on the south-west of the country. A backpacker’s haven with treehouses and beach-side ruins, it has drawn hippy types for decades.

The scenic coastal route to Olympos would take a few days and a few buses. But in Fethiye, we discovered that a 3-night cabin charter on gulet cruise could take us along the same route.

This stretch of coastline isn’t the easiest to explore by road. Many of the villages and bays along this coast were inaccessible to road traffic until the 1970s and, despite the new highways, there are still many parts that are difficult to access by car or public transport.

What better than to drift lazily between them on a boat?

A cabin charter is where you rent a room on a boat with other travellers (I use the word ‘room’ loosely). Once I learned the price, I was sold. With food and accommodation costs factored in, it wasn’t much more expensive than making our own way there.

Any fears I had of water were quickly dispelled once I strapped on a snorkel mask and jumped into those crystal clear turquoise seas. The food was as good as a restaurant, but with a much better view.

It wasn’t long before I was a convert to travelling by boat.

WHAT IS A BLUE CRUISE?

Gulet sailing in Turkey refers to a type of  sailing charter in this southwestern corner of Turkey, typically week-long liveaboard trips along the stretch of coast from Bodrum to Antalya with an emphasis on enjoying the nature as much as the sights and towns.

Gulet cruises in Turkey are also commonly referred to as a ‘ blue cruise ‘ or ‘ blue voyage ‘. Same thing.

The gulet cruise industry is popularly credited to Cevat Sakir – the Fisherman of Halicarnassus  – a writer who was exiled to Bodrum in 1925.

He fell in love with the simplicity of life and beauty of the area, often taking his literary friends out on sponge-diving boats when they visited. Several books were published about these trips, and before long fishing boats had been converted for the tourists seeking the same experience.

WHAT IS A GULET?

A gulet is a type of traditional Turkish wooden motor sailing vessel, originally used for fishing and sponging. If you’re wondering how to say ‘gulet’, it’s pronounced more like ‘goo-let’ than ‘gull-et’.

Although gulets do have sails, you can expect to motor cruise most of the time. Since gulets became popular for charters, adaptations have been made to the design to make it more comfortable for living aboard but less suitable for sailing. They have roomy decks with plenty of space for al fresco dining and sunbathing, and are wide and stable vessels.

The downside of motor cruising is the engine noise. And if you’re looking to learn how to sail, this is not the trip for you.

But if you want to experience life at sea for a few days and explore the coast by boat then gulet sailing in Turkey is great fun and great value. Turkey isn’t the only place in the Mediterranean you can gulet cruise; similar vessels have cropped up in Croatia and Montenegro, but this stretch of coast is the spiritual home.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CABIN CHARTER

Most boats offering cabin charters have around 12 passengers and 3 crew, although some party boats cram on more than that. Your meals are provided on the boat and there’s ample room on deck for lounging around, sunbathing, playing cards. A bimini provides shade and protection from the sun. You’ll spend most nights at anchor, hanging out with your fellow passengers, although there are opportunities to link up with other boats if you feel like it (particularly at the infamous Pirate Bay disco). It’s a great way to travel for singles, although you find plenty of couples and friends on the cabin charters too.

The cabins on budget boats are tiny and unlikely to have (working) A/C, meaning it’s more comfortable to sleep on a mattress on deck. If privacy/air-conditioning/showers are more your style then check out more expensive voyages with higher spec boats.

HOW MUCH DOES A GULET CRUISE COST?

So you think sailing’s just for the super-rich? That’s what I thought too. Having grown up inland with no particular interest or experience of watersports, I’d never given sailing a moment’s consideration. I assumed that it was out of my budget and didn’t see the appeal.

Until I tried it.

Cabin charters are the best way to try sailing on a budget

• Cabin charters are shared trips where you rent a cabin rather than the whole boat
• Itineraries tend to be fixed
• It’s a great way to meet people if you’re travelling solo
• Worried about sharing a small space with strangers? Gulets are spacious compared to standard cruising yachts

What’s a typical price for a gulet cruise?

The cheapest rates I’ve seen online for 2018 are around the  € 200 mark for the 4-day Fethiye-Olympos route, which tends to be the cheapest option. The higher the price, the better the facilities on the boat. 7-day itineraries start at around €3 00 .

When comparing operators it’s wise to check what’s included. Some allow you to bring your own booze, which can make a difference to your budget if you’re bringing the party spirit. Otherwise alcoholic drinks are sold on board.

BOOKING A CABIN CHARTER ON A GULET

If you’re travelling in peak season (July/August) you should consider booking in advance in order to secure the itinerary/boat that you’re after. That said, there is plenty of competition so it’s not strictly necessary.

The benefits of booking when you’re already in Turkey are that you’ll be able to compare operators, get a sense of the other passengers and crew, and potentially negotiate a lower price—particularly in shoulder season or if you’re travelling solo and hope to avoid paying the dreaded single supplement.

Some people like to party more than others, so talk to the operators to find the boat that’s the right fit for you. Find out who else has booked, make sure you know what’s included in the cost, and don’t forget to check out online reviews.

Things to bear in mind:

• You will be sharing a small space and basic facilities with strangers
• Expect to sleep on deck under the stars, it’s too hot in the cabins unless you’re splurging on a luxury boat with A/C
• Hangovers at sea are an awful thing

Speaking of hangovers . . .

How to avoid a party boat, if that’s not your scene:

• The cheaper the voyage, the more likely it will be full of party animals who have lined the freezer with booze
• Particularly so in the university holidays – July/August
• Fethiye-Olympos (and the reverse) tends to be the cheapest route and most popular with backpackers and young travellers
• Check the ages of other passengers when booking

I loved the gulet cruise experience so much that I brought a group of friends back the following year.

It wasn’t my last sailing experience either, since then I’ve gone on to sail on a tall ship around the Balearics , crewed on a classic yacht, and been a volunteer crew member on the Phoenician Ship Expedition around Africa.
