My Journey To You C Drama

It has been more than 2 weeks since I put up a drama review. This is because it has taken me a long time to complete My Journey To You (云之羽). I find the pacing to be incredibly slow that I just didn’t have the urge to binge watch this. Perhaps this is just not my cup of tea although I can’t say that the drama is awful. It has its strengths which I will highlight below together with the not so flattering views that I have on this drama. So, check out My Journey To You review below for more details.

My rating: 7.5/10 Episodes: 24 (60 minutes per episode) Type: Historical Romance Aired: September 2023 Images Credit:  iQIYI Facebook

Shang Jue from a rival faction is not agreeable to the appointment and both men are at odds with each other. At the same time, Wei Shan discovers that Wu Feng has sent another spy, Shangguan Qian, to infiltrate Gong Residence. The conflict intensifies when Zi Yu picks Wei Shan to be his bride while Shang Jue picks Shangguan Qian. As Zi Yu tries to secure his position as the new leader and Shang Jue hunts for the Wu Feng spies, Wei Shan’s and Sangguan Qian’s identity are at risk of being exposed. On top of that, there is another anonymous agent from Wiu Feng among them. Complications arise for Wei Shan when she begins to feel touched by Zi Yu’s love and kindness towards her.

My Journey To You Ending & Recap (Spoilers Alert!)

My Journey To You has an inconclusive ending. Zi Yu cooperates with Shang Jue to lure Wu Feng into a trap in Gong Residence as Wu Feng wants their blueprint to dominate the world. A fierce battle ensues. The elite fighters of Wu Feng are killed including Zi Yi who is shot by Han Ya Si. The latter sacrificed himself to save Wei Shan during the battle. For Gong Residence, Elder Hua, Young Master Hua, and Xue Gong Zi are killed.

During the commotion, Huan Yu sneaks in to steal the blueprint. But he is flushed out in the end and defeated by Zi Yu and Wei Shan in a duel. During the fight, Shangguan Qian picks up the blueprint that Huan Yu has dropped. But she is stopped by Shang Jue. Shangguan Qian then claims that she is pregnant with his child. She also tells him that they have the same goal of eliminating Wu Feng. Shangguan Qian’s Gushan Sect was wiped out by Wu Feng in the past. Shang Jue lets her go after he has quietly stolen back the blueprint from her sleeve pocket. They still think of each other after the separation.

A letter purportedly left by Han Ya Si to Wei Shan mentioned that she is indeed a daughter of the Yun family and she has a twin sister. Wei Shan took over her sister’s identity to be a bridal candidate in the beginning of the drama. Before leaving Gong Residence to visit her family, she promises Zi Yu that she will return to be with him. But she fails to do so as Wu Feng is waiting for her at her family home. As Zi Yu waits for her, the drama ends with the sound of the doors opening and Zi Yu’s shock expression.

When Did The Leads Get Together?

Zi Yu kisses Wei Shan after saving her from drowning in Episode 10. His feelings for her is clear. He also tells Wei Shan that she is the most important person in his life in Episode 15 when he consumes the same poison that is afflicting her in order to test out the antidotes. However, Wei Shan tells Zi Yu that she doesn’t like him when he asks her about her feelings while she is under the influence of a drug that could compel her to answer truthfully to any questions asked.

Zi Yu refuses to believe Wei Shan has no feelings for him though and he is proven correct in Episode 16. There is only 1 antidote available while both of them are poisoned. Wei Shan would rather die than consume the antidote which she forces it down Zi Yu’s throat. Xi Yu also doesn’t mind that Wei Shan is a Wu Feng spy after he discovers her identity in Episode 17. She also admits her feelings for him when he asks her about it in Episode 20. Zi Yu assures Wei Shan that he will always choose and protect her despite her being from Wu Feng.

When Did Zi Yu Find Out About Wei Shan’s Identity?

Zi Yu finds out that Wei Shan is from Wu Feng in Episode 17. He recalls Wei Shan and Young Master Yue have the same name, Yun Que, engraved on their accessories. Together with Jin Fan’s information, Zi Yu pieces things together and eavesdrop on their conversation. That is how he learns that Wei Shan is a Wu Feng spy and confronts them.

Is Young Master Yue A Wu Feng Spy?

No, Young Master Yue is actually a good man. In Episode 17, he reveals his story to Zi Yu and Wei Shan about his relationship with Yun Que who was Wei Shan’s foster sister in Wu Feng. Yun Que was sent on a mission to steal a herb elixir from Gong Residence 2 years ago but was caught by Yuan Zhi. She was saved by Young Master Yue. To keep her alive, Young Master Yue proposed to Zi Yu’s father, who was Gong Residence leader at that time, to use her as a medicine tester.

Young Master Yue gradually fell in love with Yun Que. He asked her to remain in Gong Residence but she knew Wu Feng will just sent more spies to look for her if she goes AWOL. Thus, Young Master Yue came up with a plan to fake Yun Que’s death. He gave her a concoction that could fake her death for 3 days and had her “corpse” hung up publicly to give Wu Feng the idea that she has died.

However, Wu Feng managed to retrieve Yun Que’s body. Its leader killed her after seeing through her plot. She then ordered Ya Si to deceive Wei Shan that Yun Que was killed by Gong Residence.

Zi Yu’s Paternity

Zi Yu’s biological father has always been a subject of gossip as his mother is rumored to have a lover before marrying into the Gong Residence. Furthermore, Zi Yu was born early. Shang Jue tries to use Zi Yu’s paternity to deny him the position as the next leader and seeks cooperation from Lady Wu Ji to tell the truth. Lady Wu Ji was Zi Yu’s mother’s long-serving servant and would have inside knowledge of Lady Lan’s affairs. She leads Shang Jue on by pretending that Zi Yu’s biological father is his mother’s lover but turns the tables on him with the truth in Episode 11.

Zi Yu was born premature because Lady Lan was in poor health and the medications that she had been taking induced an early delivery. Lady Lan and Shang Jue’s mother shared the same surname and were pregnant at the same time. Hence, their medical records could be easily mixed up to indicate that Lady Lan was healthy when she wasn’t.

Lady Lan did have a lover before marrying Zi Yu’s father who fell in love with her at first sight. Her lover was a poor scholar and her family was against their relationship. Her father then sent her to Gong Residence to be a bridal candidate and she was picked by Zi Yu’s father to be his wife. Lady Lan was depressed throughout her stay in Gong Residence as she couldn’t forget her lover. She felt conflicted and died a depressed woman when Zi Yu was still a kid.

Who Is The Anonymous Spy?

The anonymous spy from Wu Feng is Lady Wu Ji which is revealed in Episode 9. Wei Shan suspects Lady Wu Ji is from Wu Feng from her martial arts moves during a fight between them. Shangguan Qian learns about Lady Wu Ji’s identity in Episode 13 while on an investigative mission. However, Lady Wu Ji uses Shangguan Qian as a scapegoat instead to erase the suspicions on herself as a Wu Feng spy when Shang Jue starts asking the right questions.

In Episode 20, the whole background story of Lady Wu Ji is revealed through a flashback. She has long betrayed Wu Feng after her identity was exposed by Zi Yu’s father who had investigated her background. He revealed to her that she has been deceived by Wu Feng. Lady Wu Ji’s father was an excellent weapons forger and Wu Feng threatened to kill his family to force him to work for them. Her father left with her younger brother but she thought they had abandoned her. After she found out the truth, Zi Yu’s father gave her a chance and she chose to stay to serve him.

Lady Wu Ji assumes that her family members are long dead until she is given a sign that her brother might still be alive in Wu Feng. Thus, she is deceived by Huan Yu to cooperate with him to eliminate Wu Feng to save her brother. Lady Wu Ji is subsequently strangled by Huan Yu until she is on the brink of death after she has outlived her usefulness to him in Episode 20. She couldn’t talk by them and is ordered to be killed by the elders for being a Wu Feng spy.

Who Is The Ultimate Villain?

The ultimate villain is Huan Yu. Wu Feng is after Gong Residence’s Infinite Heat blueprint which can allow the party which activates it to dominate the world. However, all the previous Sword Wielders of Gong Residence have been prudent not to activate the blueprint due to its power which can create huge casualties. In Episode 20, Zi Shang witnesses Huan Yu killing Lady Wu Ji from afar. Although she didn’t manage to see who is the killer, she realizes it is Huan Yu a short while later. Huan Yu tries to silence her through an explosion in Episode 21 but she survives to tell ZI Yu the truth.

Hence, Zi Yu could already guess it is Huan Yu who has stolen the blueprint when it goes missing in Episode 23. When confronted, Huan Yu argues that they should activate the blueprint to wipe out Wu Feng and create a new path for Gong Residence rather than being confined to the valley. He had argued with his adoptive father over it but the latter disagreed with his views. His father also wanted to change his successor to Shang Jue. This compelled Huan Yu to kill his father.

Huan Yu also manipulated events to ensure Zi Yu got appointed as the Sword Wielder as he thought a weak Zi Yu could be his pawn. He then deceived Lady Wu Ji to create turmoil in Gong Residence. His plan was to get the elders to activate the blueprint as Wu Feng circles in for the kill. When that failed, Huan Yu seek out Shangguan Qian to lure Wu Feng into Gong Residence. During the battle between the 2 sides, Huan Yu could then steal the blueprint.

Zi Yu and Wei Shan defeat Huan Yu in a fight and is imprisoned in Episode 24.

My Journey To You Review – Suspenseful But Slow-Moving

Personally, I find My Journey To You to be excruciatingly slow-moving. The longer one hour duration for each episode makes me even more reluctant to binge watch the drama. It has a dark tone from the start which gives it an air of mystery and suspense. So, it is easy to get drawn into it at the beginning. But it is a story with a long set up and dominated by conversations spoken in hushed and measured tones. Although there are some fighting scenes, this is not a wuxia drama in the mold of Side Story Of Fox Volant . This is more similar to The Wind Blows From Longxi with spies at work.

I crawled through 15 episodes before the story starts to pick up for me. Basically, you have an organization sending female spies masquerading as bridal candidates into enemy camp. The people are all distrustful of each other even though they may belong to the same organization. Therefore, the long, drawn out set up lay the foundation to the story as the distrust among the characters needs to be played out. I think this is where the story seems to be going in circles for me which contributed to the slow pacing.

However, the drama can be intriguing as you are not told who is the bad guy. Furthermore, some of these characters have their own secrets or agenda which is only revealed in a gradual manner. If you like this kind of suspense, then My Journey To You is a captivating production. It can be dull as I explained above but the last stretch may make it worthwhile if you find the first half to be slow like I did.

Not A Romance Drama

My Journey To You is not strictly a romance drama in my books. This is not anything sweet and wholesome, so don’t expect it to be another Destined . In fact, the main couple’s romance is rather bland to me. The male lead is simply smitten by the female lead. She doesn’t have to do anything to make him fall for her. Their progress is predictable and hence, their relationship is a straightforward one.

This is in contrast to the second couple who has a much more complex relationship. There is gradual attraction but also distrust and suspicion. The girl has a mission to accomplish as a spy while the guy sees her organization as an enemy. The mind games of this couple’s relationship is actually more aligned to the theme of the drama than the main couple.

Nevertheless, romance is really not the focus here. It is just a necessary part of the story that is used to heighten the sense of an impending exposure of the spies’ identity and possible betrayal. It is a build up to make you anticipate certain events so that you will continue watching to see how things unfold and await those critical moments. I think this is where the drama did well. The romance itself isn’t a fluffy or moving one. It is the mind games and moves the characters make that dominate My Journey To You rather than any love story.

A Meh Ending (Spoilers Alert!)

I do not know what the scriptwriter has in mind with the inconclusive ending. It leaves you with the feeling that there should be more to the story but unlike Lost You Forever S1 , there is no indication that there will be a second season for My Journey To You. There are a lot of unresolved issues at the end of the 24 episodes. For instance, both the female spies have an axe to grind with the leader of their organization but they have yet to get their sweet revenge. In fact, the female lead may be under the organization’s control again as she is being threatened with her sister’s safety.

Therefore, you are left hanging at the end of the drama. If you have watched the modern romance drama You Are Desire , the type of inconclusive ending there is similar to My Journey To You. There are a lot of possibilities but no answer given. It is okay to have an open ending to me but it spoils the drama if the ending seems more like an end to a chapter than an actual conclusion.

Basically, the ending feeds you the idea that there will be another round of fight between the 2 enemy organizations. Since one couldn’t totally wipe out the other, it makes sense that the clash between them will just go on and on. But I feel that there should be closure for the characters which is missing from the drama’s ending. This is where the disappointment comes in for me.

Acting & Chemistry

It is great to see Esther Yu picking up more diverse roles than the normal chirpy and cute characters that she normally takes on such as in Love Between Fairy And Devil as well as A Romance Of The Little Forest . In My Journey To You, her character, Wei Shan, is rational and serious with a scheming mind. I like that change in scenery for her although her acting is not exactly absorbing in the drama. It is a little wooden although I suspect it also has to do with the way the character is written. Wei Shan is more like a sidekick to the male lead as she mainly lays low throughout the story.

Zhang Ling He also played his role well enough as Zi Yu to make me plough on although the drama is boring to me for more than a dozen episodes. Just like Wei Shan, Zi Yu is not really an outstanding character but the actor did what he could to make him more commanding onscreen. Instead, I think it is the supporting characters, Shang Jue and Shangguan Qian, played by Ryan Cheng and Lu Yu Xiao respectively that stole the limelight.

Ryan Cheng is perfect as Shang Jue to make you hate him at times. But he does not overdo it to the extent that the character becomes abhorrent. Lu Yu Xiao is also convincing as Shangguan Qian with her slow spoken style. Shangguan Qian obviously wouldn’t want others to know what she is thinking in her devious mind and Lu Yu Xiao brings up this aspect of the character very well. You will hate her but the acting is on point as a scheming spy.

My Verdict – Make Exceptions For The Ending & Slow Pace

My Journey To You is a solid story except for the ending and the slow pacing. If these 2 things are not an issue with you, then it can well be a masterpiece in your books. This is because everything else about the drama is excellent to me. The costumes are detailed and elaborate, the location settings are scenic, and the cinematography has a movie rather than a TV drama quality to it.

On top of that, the characters are layered and complex. This sets the right feel to the tone of the drama which is largely dark and suspenseful. Basically, if you like spy stories whereby the spies are always scheming to fulfill their mission and guarding against the exposure of their identity with all the distrust and suspicions around them, then this is for you. But if you want a conventional romance, then look elsewhere.

While I find this to be slow-paced, it may not be for you if you like the subtleties of the dialogues and the long set up. This is a conversation-heavy drama whereby a lot of things are revealed through dialogues with a guess-who ring to it. It is not hard to guess who the anonymous spy might be but there is a twist at the end and the pace quickens considerably in the last few episodes.

Overall, I would give this My Journey To You review a score of 7.5/10. I’m not particularly fond of the ending and the slow pacing almost made me give up halfway. So, this is not going to get a perfect score from me. But it is worth a watch and it is not often that we get a Chinese historical drama with a spy theme.

7.5 is absolutely correct or 7 accurately. I started this drama when it first started airing and now I still haven’t finished it, meanwhile I have bingewatch 7 kdramas already. I had to put it on hold since I hated leaving drama halfway. I honestly have no idea why people are praising this drama except they are doing so because of their faves in it. The drama has no development, doesn’t move forward, keep suspecting people without doing anything, no actions but just a circus that keep going in circles. I watched Esther in LBFAD and thought to give her a chance here but honestly I wish I never started this drama because to finish it is a problem.

Same with me. I’m just wondering why i have this feeling that it so hard to finish an episode wherein the plot is ok and not that really boring that i will totally drop it. It has the story and twist which made me keep on moving and pehaps the slow face content that it made it difficutl to finish but on the last few eps it where it made the story stir-up with excititement. But unfortunately the ending ruined it all. It’s ok to have open ending which i got used to it for most c-drama, but i think this is the worst ending for me i think its better they show the dead wei shan dead body thrown by wufeng at the gate when it opened if they intend to revenge the death of their elites this way is more realistic. Overall its still good for those who like martial arts with intense mind game story. and also Esther Yu is better here that LBFAD, she really annoys me there. Cutie roles is not for her.

“My Journey to You” is a wuxia romance drama that centers around Yu Wei Shan, a Wufeng assassin, who is on a mission to infiltrate the Gong family. With the promise that once Yu Wei Shan completes the mission, she will be free to leave Wufeng, she heads for Jiuchen Valley to become a prospective bride. There, she finds herself struggling to complete her mission and betray Gong Zi Yu, a kind and carefree Sword Wielder inheritor of the Gong family. Together, these two lost souls find themselves entangled in a world of dark lies and dangerous schemes.

Yu Shu Xin , known for her roles in “ Love Between Fairy and Devil ” and “ Moonlight ,” portrays Yu Wei Shan, a Wufeng assassin on a promised final mission to infiltrate the Gong family. She has little information about her mission, except that she must become the chosen wife of the next Sword Wielder, Gong Huan Yu. Despite being warned not to trust anyone during this mission, Yu Wei Shan finds herself falling for the kind-hearted Gong Zi Yu while trying to deceive him as she completes her assigned tasks.

Zhang Ling He , known for his roles in “ Love Between Fairy and Devil ” and “ Flourish in Time ,” portrays Gong Zi Yu, a member of the Yu lineage and the younger brother of the current Sword Wielder. He is known for his kindness and carefree nature. However, due to his personality, weak martial arts skills, and a questionable birth story, he is neither the favorite son nor the recipient of fondness within the Gong family. When he learns of a Wufeng assassin among the prospective brides, he is determined to protect the innocent. As issues arise within the Gong family, Gong Zi Yu faces a sudden transition to maturity and leadership, and he emotionally relies on Yu Wei Shan, placing his trust in her.

Cheng Lei , from “ The Queen of Attack ,” and “ A Familiar Stranger ,” portrays Gong Shang Jue, a member of the Jue lineage within the Gong family. He is characterized as a cold and ruthless individual, widely recognized as the most suitable candidate to succeed Gong Huan Yu as the Sword Wielder. With support from Gong Yuan Zhi, the two conspire to overthrow Gong Zi Yu, aiming for Gong Shang Jue to assume the position of Sword Wielder.

Lu Yu Xiao , from “ Time and Him are Just Right ,” and “ To Ship Someone ,” portrays Shangguan Qian, another Wufeng assassin who infiltrates the Gong family under the guise of a prospective bride, but her mission is different from Yu Wei Shan; she must approach Gong Shang Jue. Shangguan Qian is a strikingly beautiful woman who uses her allure and assumes a false persona of sweetness and helplessness in her attempt to captivate Gong Shang Jue.

Questions and Answers of “My Journey to You” & Character Breakdown

heavy spoilers ahead

Gong family dynamics

The Gong family is secluded sect that is located in the Jiuchen Valley. Visitors find it tricky to navigate the heavily guarded Gong family estate, which is under constant surveillance. The Gong family is known for its rivalry with Wufeng and has a significant presence in the martial arts world. Due to their seclusion and the location of their sect, their criteria for choosing a bride prioritize the bride’s health and ability to produce offspring.

Despite being known as the Gong family, they actually consist of four different lineages: Shang, Jue, Zhi, and Yu. Each of these lineages specializes in a different area to serve a specific purpose within the Gong family.

  • Tian Jia Rui  as Gong Yuan Zhi (looks up to Gong Shang Jue like a real older brother)
  • Jin Jing  as Gong Zi Shang (referred to as elder sister and isn’t loved by her father)
  • Lang Er (Gong Shang Jue’s younger brother who was assassinated by Wufeng)
  • Ren Shan  as Gong Hong Yu (Gong Zi Yu’s father and previous Sword Wielder)
  • Ji Ling Chen  as Gong Huan Yu (Gong Zi Yu’s older half-brother and previous Sword Wielder successor)
  • Feng: following the confrontation with the Wufeng assassins in episode 22, it is revealed that the back hill originally hosted five lineages, including the Feng lineage, from which Yun Wei Shan draws her sword technique. This lineage had defected to Wufeng, adding a layer of complexity to the unfolding story and Yun Wei Shan’s true identity.

A Sword Wielder will be tattooed with a script that will bound them to Jiuchen Valley, where they will live for the Gong family and die for the Gong family. Before becoming a Sword Wielder, one would have to pass the Trial of the Three Realms. There are two rules of the Gong family:

  • The Gong family must always have a Sword Wielder. Once the Sword Wielder dies, his successor must assume the position immediately.
  • If the Sword Wielder and his successor both die, absent inheritance will be initiated.

In “My Journey to You,” the story begins with Gong Zi Yu’s father, Gong Hong Yu, serving as the Sword Wielder of the Gong family. His successor is Gong Zi Yu’s brother, Gong Huan Yu, who is tasked with selecting one of the prospective brides to be his wife.

Following the succession line, Gong Shang Jue would have been next in line to become the Sword Wielder, and then Gong Zi Yu. However, due to the absent inheritance clause and Gong Shang Jue’s absence from Jiuchen Valley during Gong Hong Yu and Gong Huan Yu’s mysterious deaths, Gong Zi Yu inherited the Sword Wielder position.

In Episode 21, the elders disclosed that the Gong family serves as the public face and forefront of the valley, whereas the heart of Jiuchen Valley lies in the back hill, guarded by the Hua, Xue, and Yue lineages, where they protect the coveted “Infinite Heat” and fight off infidels.

Jade Guardians

Only the Sword Wielder, head of each lineage, elders, and the next-in-line successor are granted to have a personal Jade Guardian. There are different levels of Jade Guardians:

  • Sun Chen Jun  as Jin Fan (Gong Zi Yu’s jade guardian)
  • Yellow: These guards protect the elders and the back hill, led by Jin Yu Feng.
  • Red: The highest level of guards.

In episode 10, it was revealed that Jin Fan was the youngest guardian to become a Red Jade Guardian; however, to protect Gong Zi Yu, Gong Hong Yu made Jin Fan step down to a Green Jade Guardian. This explains why Jin Fan has knowledge of the Trial of the Three Realms and only used 30% of his internal skills when fighting against Yun Wei Shan.

  • Yao Tong as Lady Ling (Gong Shang Jue’s mother)
  • He Ze Yuan as Jin Fu (guard under Gong Shang Yue)
  • Lin Zi Ye  / Zeng Shun Xi  as Xue Tong Xi (Xue lineage)
  • Zuo Ye  as Mister Yue (Xue Tong Xi’s assistant)
  • Liang Xue Feng  as Master Hua (Hua lineage)

Council of Elders

  • Liang Xue Feng  as Mister Hua (took over Elder Yue’s position)
  • Shen Bao Ping  as Elder Yue
  • Ding Zhi Yong  as Elder Hua
  • Tan Jian Chang  as Elder Xue
  • Hu Ha (housekeeper of the Council of Elders)

What we know about Wufeng organization

Wufeng is a sect of assassins that is divided into hierarchies of teachers (ravens) and assassins. In preparation to infiltrate the Gong family during the bride selection, the new criteria for Wufeng assassins was that they must be women. Wufeng assassins are categorized into four levels based on their abilities. These four categories are listed from the lowest to the highest levels:

  • Zeng Ke Ni  as Zheng Nan Yi (assassin under Hanya Qi)
  • Ai Mi  as Yun Que (Yun Wei Shan’s foster sister)
  • Wen Zheng Rong as Wu Ming ( anonymous ) – Gong Hong Yu’s concubine (see breakdown above)
  • Zhang Xue Han  as Situ Hong – poses as Zi Yi at Wanhua Pavilion in Jiuchen Valley
  • Tan Yu Qiao  as Bei Xu
  • Zhang Xiao Ang  as Han Yi Ke
  • Wang Le Fu  as Mo Ji Ai
  • Ou Mi De  as Hanya Si (Yu Wei Shan’s raven)
  • Zhu Jian  as Hanya Qi (Shangguan Qian’s raven)
  • Yang Xiao (杨骁) as Hanya Er

In episode 5, it was mentioned by Hanya Si and Yun Wei Shan that for the past 20 years, anyone who sneaked into the Gong residence has gone missing without a trace, except for Yun Que. Only one person, known as Wu Ming (which means “anonymous”), succeeded in sneaking into the Gong family 22 years ago and delivered a secret letter back to Wufeng. The letter stated that the next bride selection would be in 20 years—the same bride selection that Yun Wei Shan is entering. Hanya Si hopes that Yun Wei Shan will be motivated to complete her mission for freedom and revenge against her sister simultaneously.

In Episode 24, Shangguan Qian mentioned that she had once attempted to poison Dianzhu, the individual who had recruited her into Wufeng. Her assassination attempt on Dianzhu took place two years prior, and coincidentally, it coincided with the Chief of Wufeng canceling a scheduled Wufeng meeting. This coincidence led Shangguan Qian to believe that Dianzhu and the Chief of Wufeng might be the same person.

How does “My Journey to You” end?

In Episode 21, Yun Wei Shan departs from the Gong residence, revealing her true identity as a Wufeng assassin. In Jiuchen Valley, she encounters the four Wang assassins, and together they devise a plan to infiltrate the Gong residence on the day Gong Zi Yu is set to ascend to the position of Sword Wielder.

Episode 22 delivers the long-awaited showdown between the Gong family and the Wufeng assassins, resulting in numerous casualties among beloved characters. Elder Hua, Young Master Hua, Hanya Si, and Mister Yue all meet their tragic end in this fierce battle.

Episode 23 sees the Gong family recuperating from the devastating conflict, only to confront the shocking story of Gong Huan Yu’s betrayal.

In Episode 24, Gong Shang Jue successfully retrieves the Infinite Heat tablet from Shangguan Qian, showing unexpected mercy when he allows her to leave the Gong residence after learning of her pregnancy. Jin Fan and Gong Zi Shang are officially a couple.

The conclusion of “My Journey to You” leaves many mysteries unresolved and hints at the possibility of a second season. We are introduced to new information, revealing that Yun Wei Shan has a twin, and the prospective bride position she assumed in Li Xi town originally belonged to her sister. Yun Wei Shan embarks on a journey to visit her true family, but she is met with the unexpected presence of Wufeng. Meanwhile, Gong Zi Yu remains at the Gong residence, filled with sorrow, as he believes Yun Wei Shan has chosen freedom over him. As the screen fades to black, a heavy door creaks open, leaving the story of “My Journey to You” with an open-ended conclusion.

Review: My Journey to You

“the blade of the gong family never points inward but outwards”.

poster of the My Journey to You with Yu Shu Xin and Zhang Ling He

★★★☆☆  Rating: 3.3/5

The airdrop of “My Journey to You” was unexpected but brought a pleasant surprise. This “darker” wuxia romance drama distinguishes itself from typical wuxia dramas we see nowadays through its unique cinematography and positioning for viewers. It incorporates more cinematic elements than a typical drama, both in scriptwriting and directing. Suppose you’ve watched any of the director Guo Jing Ming ‘s film works. In that case, you might notice a similar aesthetic—it’s visually appealing and has a compelling story and character setup. Still, it lacks depth where it truly matters, leaving some loopholes, a lot of filling in the holes, and me yearning for more. While Guo Jing Ming was able to add more details to the characters and setting in “My Journey to You,” there were apparent loopholes that weren’t as jarring as his other works. The most important aspect of making the drama memorable was missing, which is the lack of depth and thought that went towards the lead characters of Gong Zi Yu and Yun Wei Shan. Therefore, expressing my feelings about this one is challenging.

The Bad : a lot to desire from the story and characters

Lack of thrill: “While “My Journey to You” presents an interesting world story and premise, it’s challenging to become completely engrossed. At times, it seems to strive too hard to be a clever, suspenseful, and edgy drama, with characters intended to be scheming. However, there are only a few moments that truly engender a sense of suspense. One might assume that the Wufeng aspects would keep viewers on their toes, but instead, it unfolds more as an unraveling mystery, step by step, relying on numerous flashbacks to fully understand the characters and their stories. Both female Wufeng agents seem to rely on a weak “honey trap” approach, though Yun Wei Shan employs a more strategic emotional approach. They both maintain a similar act, attempting to use tears or a pouty face to escape every time, which becomes dull to watch.

I understand the director’s intentions, but there’s a lack of a sense of “what’s going to happen next” or a real sense of investment in whether the characters will overcome the obstacles the drama sets up. Everything appears entirely predictable, especially when the characters find themselves in difficult situations; we know they’ll likely find a way out due to their “halo” or knowing that they play a pivotal role in the drama, making it too early to write off their characters.

Surprisingly, I found more enjoyment in watching the Gong family drama and the brothers’ feud, something I wouldn’t typically expect to enjoy in drama storylines. However, the focus wasn’t solely on taking the position of the Sword Wielder but also on figuring out who the Wufeng spy is, going through trials, delving into backstories, providing funny comic relief, exploring possible romance, and more. This multifaceted approach made that plot point more digestible.

Too many characters, too little time: Additionally, it took a long time to warm up to many of these characters in “My Journey to You.” Because the writer wanted to add suspense, we received only limited information about the characters, such as their names, roles, and missions. There’s no backstory to help us understand them or build emotions towards the characters. For almost one-third of the drama, many characters exhibited only one or two emotions, closely adhering to what the creators wanted us to see in terms of character portrayal. As we started to receive bits and pieces of their past and lives, many of these characters became more appreciated on my end, but the story reveals could have been executed better.

While there are several mysterious and intriguing supporting characters, there was more focus on them, leaving us craving more time to focus on the two main characters and their story. Our two main characters are Gong Zi Yu and Yun Wei Shan, with the next couple being Gong Shang Jue and Shangguan Qian. We also encounter characters like Gong Zi Shang, Jin Fan, and Gong Yuan Zhi, among others, in Jiuchen Valley or even Wufeng.

Lack of solid growth in main characters: We see a lot of content about the two characters individually, making them likable. They are two naturally kind-hearted individuals forced to take on roles they don’t want, yearning for freedom. This makes them easy to root for because we naturally want to support good people. Yet, at the same time, their stories weren’t gritty enough for me to grasp why it had to be Gong Zi Yu or Yun Wei Shan as the leads. Therefore, it took a lot of work for me to become emotionally invested in the two characters when others had more to offer.

Gong Zi Yu was raised without feeling love from his father after losing his mother at a young age. He doesn’t possess the best martial arts skills, despite his father’s attempts to train him as a child. He was a sad boy who yearned for freedom, even though he didn’t seem to have many restrictions on him that we could see. This wasn’t a compelling reason to love his character from the beginning. Once we learned about the loss of his father and brother, we expected to see more character development, at least following the typical hero’s journey. However, there was only a little natural progression of growth, except for the revelation of his schemes, which didn’t contribute to good storytelling.

As Gong Zi Yu is known for being softer and more empathetic, the writer thrusts him into being a romantic fool for love. This initiated a love story that was quite forceful from the beginning. Every action Gong Zi Yu took could have been an opportunity for him to grow into an even more likable character, but instead, the writer continuously looped Gong Zi Yu’s actions back to Yun Wei Shan. If you’re a romance lover, you may enjoy this character trait of Gong Zi Yu, but it wasn’t my preference as someone who would like to see more depth in characters and genuine relationship development.

The same issue was also prevalent in Yun Wei Shan’s story. The crucial factor lies in the timing and manner in which these scenes are unraveled, as well as how the actress portrays the accompanying emotions. Regrettably, these elements failed to deliver the depth necessary to create a genuine connection with Yun Wei Shan. Despite the abundance of screen time, Yun Wei Shan’s development and emotional resonance were compromised, leaving viewers yearning for a more profound understanding of Wei Shan and her story. In the end, storytelling should not only focus on the quality of pretty scenes and the tip of the iceberg but also on the craftsmanship in revealing a character’s inner world.

Although we saw more of her history with Hanya Si and Yun Que, few scenes indicated her emotional growth. We saw more conflict within Shangguan Qian than in Yun Wei Shan. Coming from the Wufeng organization, where she went through many trials of torture and training, it would’ve made sense to see more emotional depth in her character that’s on par with Gong Shang Jue.

Lack of convincing romance: In terms of acting, both Zhang Ling He and Yu Shu Xin are competent with certain expressions, but one of the reasons I found it hard to connect to their characters was the lack of emotions I felt from them. As two characters supposed to be lost and scorned by the world in some way, it was challenging for me to feel their anguish and sadness, especially in highly emotional scenes. This issue extended to the other supporting cast members. Another reason why I felt little attachment to the two main characters is their lack of chemistry. In a romance-driven story, I expected more chemistry between them.

One of my main issues was the need for more direction in making their relationship develop seamlessly in a way that would make sense for them to fall in love. I didn’t need overtly dramatic moments or forced physical intimacy, but despite the writer’s attempt to create a “natural” love story, the progression of their feelings felt mundane. Essentially, their relationship seemed to exist merely because the writer said they are a couple, rather than truly convincing viewers of their connection.

There was a lot of potential for a compelling love story. In my perspective, these two characters represented the warmest light amidst the dark world of Wufeng and the Gong family. Their romance needed to be warm and heartfelt, serving as a pillar of hope contrasting against the darkness. However, it’s challenging to wholeheartedly root for them as a couple because we don’t witness their relationship developing in a way that stirs our emotions. Knowing they are two doomed individuals should have added depth to their chemistry, but it remained elusive, both as characters and actors.

The Good : interesting characters

One of my favorite aspects of many of these characters is their complexity; they have goals, aspirations, grievances, and stories to tell. They aren’t mere background characters solely used to push the main characters forward for growth; they have layers. The challenge lies in needing more time to peel back those layers, especially within the constraints of just 24 episodes, given the intricate world setting of the Gong and Wufeng.

Example 1, Gong Shang Jue: While many viewers might have disliked the Gong brothers, Gong Shang Jue and Gong Yuan Zhi, they quickly became two of my favorites due to how their characters were presented. Gong Shang Jue stands out as a well-written character with depth that viewers can easily connect to, despite not undergoing drastic and obvious growth as a character. Initially, we see Gong Shang Jue as a cold and ruthless member of the Jue lineage Gong family, someone who rigidly adheres to rules. He appears cold-hearted, and it’s easy to assume he has evil intentions because he opposes Gong Zi Yu and aspires to overthrow him and become the Sword Wielder. However, we can’t hate him because Gong Shang Jue isn’t necessarily evil; rather, our dislike stems from his opposition to the main leads, which leads us to label him as an antagonist. Nonetheless, his actions suggest that his true goal is to protect the Gong family and apprehend the Wufeng assassins.

As the story progresses, we learn the reasons behind Gong Shang Jue’s closed-off nature and the trauma he carries due to the death of his beloved family members at the hands of Wufeng. This revelation sheds light on his actions and his quest for revenge against Wufeng. It becomes evident that despite his cold exterior, Gong Shang Jue still possesses a compassionate side, seen in his brotherly connection with Gong Yuan Zhi and his emotional turmoil due to Shangguan Qian. Towards the end of the show, we witness Gong Shang Jue’s transformation from a seemingly heartless character to someone who assists Gong Zi Yu behind the scenes and is willing to work rationally to devise a scheme to outwit their enemies.

While some of Gong Shang Jue’s character developments are implied rather than explicitly shown, we can easily connect the dots because we already understand his backstory and character arc. In comparison, Gong Zi Yu, who is portrayed as a romantic idealist, is not depicted as a particularly sharp character. The juxtaposition between the two brothers at the end feels more like a narrative twist than a well-developed progression, contributing to the drama’s occasional feeling of laziness in its storytelling.

Example 2, Gong Yuan Zhi: One character I particularly enjoyed watching was Gong Yuan Zhi. He, too, lacks significant depth or character growth, but the way he was presented within the story worked well. Initially, Gong Yuan Zhi comes across as sinister, irrationally biased, and stubborn, particularly in his unwavering support for his brother Gong Shang Jue. However, as the audience gains insight into the reasons behind his loyalty and respect for Gong Shang Jue, we come to appreciate him despite his flaws. The writer also provides numerous emotional scenes involving Gong Yuan Zhi, allowing us to witness his vulnerable and humane side. What sets him apart is that he isn’t merely a plot device to advance scenes; he plays a pivotal role in the dynamics of the Gong family and has the potential to grow further after reconnecting with his family.

Example 3, Hanya Si: One of my personal favorite characters is Hanya Si, despite his limited screen time. While not as extensively developed as some other characters, Hanya Si’s smaller yet impactful scenes manage to stir our emotions. As viewers of a minor character, we have to fill in some of the gaps in his character’s importance. It becomes apparent that, despite his role in pushing Yun Wei Shan and Yun Que through their training and torture, Hanya Si genuinely cared for their well-being. He silently aided them along the way, dropping hints about missions, and even sacrificed his own future for Yun Wei Shan’s. While we can accept some degree of imagination and interpretation with minor characters, it’s something we shouldn’t have to do for the main leads.

Despite having great ideas for a story, because there was too much to fit in, from wanting all the characters to be important to having a dynamic world setting, because Guo Jing Ming seemed to have in mind more to the story, this feels like completing arc one to Gong Zi Yu and Yun Wei Shan’s journey. This would explain why there are so many questions unanswered in the world setting and why there was little development in their characters. However, that is an assumption, and whether “My Journey to You” gets another season, if Guo Jing Ming releases the novel, we will get a more complete story to create an opinion on. This wasn’t THE Chinese drama for me in 2023 but it was a good watch with well thought out soundtrack for each character and moment. This is probably due to Guo Jing Ming participating in songwriting for the songs, which helps puts the pieces together.

The box office smash focuses on the difficulties of being accepted into someone else's family. Blending comedy with serious undertones, the film is one of the first to showcase the struggles American-born Asians face within their own background. 'My Life in Ruins' (2009)

Often thought of as the sister movie to My Big Fat Greek Wedding , My Life in Ruins stars Nia Vardalos as a love-deprived tour guide, Georgia. Meeting a group of misfit tourists in Greece, she changes her perspective on life and romance.

The script cleverly portrays every type of traveler from the bickering rich couple, the well-behaved Canadians, the Brits, the first-time traveler, and, of course, the obnoxiously loud Americans. Drastically opposite to her awkward role as Toula Portokalos, Vardalos's character is somewhat stiffer and predictable, but she still lives up to her roots as a quick-witted comedian. The film beautifully represents Greece's breathtaking landscapes while leaving viewers with abundant life messages.

This Cyclist Bike Tours Whenever and Wherever She Can—and Brings Her Family Along for the Ride

“I can’t imagine my life without cycling—it has been a source of inspiration to lead a creative, unusual life.”

I first got serious about cycling in 1980 when I was dating Keith Morical—in 2020, he set a Guinness World Record for biking the 48 contiguous states in a month. At the time, he was into touring and we went on a three-day bikepacking trip . I was hooked.

Keith and I didn’t last, but my love of bike touring has never ended. I did several other local unsupported tours, got a new touring bike, and then a job at a bike shop in Chicago. I bike-commuted to work there even in the winter.

In 1986, armed with the latest in bike-touring equipment (Eclipse panniers!) I convinced my fiancée that our honeymoon should be eight months of biking and camping through Europe . Then, in 1991, we biked through Italy, riding from Rome to Florence and back.

Back in Chicago, I had a really good off-road bike (a Klein) and did one race, winning my category despite doing a header into a stream. Then a month later, I was pregnant and gave up racing but kept cycling.

Despite having little ones and limited resources, my husband and I kept squeezing in small tours—a weekend here, a five-day trip there. We just added a burley cart, a trail-a-bike, bike seats, and kids bikes to our equipment. In 2008, we took our 15- and 8-year-old on a three-week bike trip in Italy.

When the kids were grown, and I was working full-time as a potter at 59, I realized I was out of shape. My husband I were spending some winter months in Merida, Mexico, and started exploring the region on bikes. During that time, I also began to slowly regain my fitness and stamina over several years.

Upon turning 60 in 2019, my goal was to ride 60 miles in one day—which I did during a four-day bike trip! However, in 2020, I found out that I had an aortic aneurysm and the doctor thought I might need open-heart surgery. I needed to keep my blood pressure down, and so I buckled down on diet and exercise and at my last check-up in 2023, my heart looked really healthy and the aneurysm had not gotten any worse, so it was not necessary to operate.

In 2023, my husband and I traveled to Italy for two months to ride and had a wonderful experience. After that we did a few more bikepacking trips—I love the self-reliance, freedom, challenge, and being outdoors all day. Plus, I am fortunate that my husband and bike-partner is so supportive and willing to go on this journey with me.

I currently cycle first thing in the morning when I’m in Merida. My bike in Merida is a 24” wheel women’s bike but I take it on rocks, gravel , shopping, city riding, long distance , and just for whatever I need. Back in Minnesota, I try to bike three to four times a week.

Physically, I am sure I would be grossly overweight by now if I didn’t cycle. I’ve fought that all my life, but I’ve come to realize that I have almost always been fit because of my habit and love of cycling. I’m proud that I brought up both my children to be good cyclists.

Emotionally, cycling has always been a source of deep happiness for me. I can’t imagine my life without cycling—it has been a source of inspiration to lead a creative, unusual life.

These tips have made my cycling journey a success:

1. get a comfortable bike fit and seat.

I’m 5’3 and when I started biking , I couldn’t find a frame that was small enough. Recently, I bought a 51cm XS Giant. The fit made a huge difference in my comfort and power.

2. Build riding into any and everything you do

Traveling? Bring, rent, or borrow a bike, even if it’s just for a day. Groceries, commuting, meeting for coffee? Get good bags and save the gas money. Add a biking element to any trip! When I do art fairs in other cities, I bring along a bike. In 2016, I did a bike-share in Paris to get around. In 2020, we rented bikes several times in Italy. It’s a wonderful way to see any place.

3. Get your children riding with you

Keep it fun for the kids . They’ll thank you later. If it feels unsafe, get a bike rack, drive to a bike trail, and bring treats for after. You are building their health and the next generation of cyclists. Teach them good habits and safety.

4. Be adaptable as you age

As health gets more fragile, don’t give up! Adapt how you exercise and be creative with it. Do whatever it takes to keep going—maybe that’s reducing mileage or getting a different kind of bike. Set realistic goals and even then, be flexible with those, but don’t give up.

Glynnis’s Must-Have Gear

→ Peak Design Magnetic Phone Holder : I needed a very secure but easy way to access my phone to film while biking. This is a fantastic, durable, dependable mount.

→ TransIt Ragster SPD Cycling Sandals : I love these because they are super comfortable sandals, and I can ride well in them.

→ Po Campo Orchard Grocery Pannier : A friend gave me one and I used it for shopping. The attachment system is super simple yet works really well. It’s durable and holds a lot.

→ Shimano PD-ED500 Road Touring Pedals : I got my first ones in 1991—they changed my life.

We want to hear how cycling changed you! Send your story and submit your photos to us via this web form . We’ll pick one each week to highlight on the site.

“I mean … it’s all part of the experience,” said Buffaloes forward Luke McFarlane of the journey just to reach the Hockey Canada’s Men’s U18 National Club Championship.

“It’s just keeping level-headed, trying to get as much sleep as you can, staying hydrated and eating right,” continued McFarlane. “But I think just the excitement of just going to this tournament is going to fuel the fire.”

The tourney begins for the Buffaloes on Monday against the host Sydney Rush at Membertou Sport & Wellness Centre (4 p.m. MT).

As Pacific Region winners, they follow with more round-robin action Tuesday — against the Atlantic-champion Kensington Wild from Prince Edward Island (noon MT); Wednesday — versus the central-king Markham Waxers from Ontario (8 a.m. MT); Thursday — against the Western-champ Brandon Wheat Kings (8 a.m. MT); and Friday — versus the Quebec-winning Cantonniers de Magog (8 a.m. MT).

“It’s like basically seven games in seven days,” said Buffaloes head coach Brent Harrison. “So we’ve got to get our rest when we can, make sure that we’re not taxing certain guys too much throughout the round robin and just make sure that we’re eating right, getting our sleep, getting our rest … all that stuff.”

“Yeah … it’s a helluva grind,” agreed Buffs defenceman Zak Green. “But we’ve got a tight group. So I know we’re going to go in there and give it our best. It’s going to be about sticking together as a team.”

They’ve done that well so far this year.

Rocking four solid lines and a sound trio of defensive pairings in front of solid goaltending has vaulted the Buffs to this point — through the Alberta Elite Hockey League season, onward to the U18 AAA provincial title and past the host Vancouver North East Chiefs in the Pacific Region series earlier this month.

They scored at least five goals in five of their eight playoff wins to grab the league title, and those wins of 3-2 and 1-0 in the Pacific set proved they know how to shut the door on other teams.

“We’re a team that has been able to score goals, and we play a pretty good team-defensive game, but I’d say the depth is a big part of that,” Morrison said. “We’re able to trust a lot of different guys in key situations.”

Good thing, because the Buffs need all that for the Telus Cup grind.

And Harrison himself knows that first-hand, having guided the Buffaloes to the semifinals — where they lost 4-2, basically a one-goal game, to the Toronto Young Canadians — in the 2019 Telus Cup.

“Oh … we’ve got good depth,” continued Harrison. “As the season’s gone on, I think our depth has kind of shown to be better than maybe we thought at the start of the year. So it’s right up there. So I think that does favour us.”

“We have a really deep team right now,” agreed McFarlane. “Everyone’s buying in, and everyone’s doing their part. That’s the whole part of why we’re winning. Because no matter how many minutes you’re playing, it’s just do your part — do your job every time you step on the ice.

“I mean … I think from the start, we were pretty deep. It’s just figuring out roles and stuff. But I think as everyone figured out their role on the team, everyone started to buy in. And kind of at the start of the playoffs is when everything really started to click.”

Enough so that they’ve worked themselves into this shot at winning the Telus Cup title.

It would be the Buffs’ second national banner scoring gold and bragging rights since way back in 1989.

“The guys are excited, and they’ve been just executing pretty well,” added Harrison. “They look pretty good in practice. So I think we’re very excited and ready to get going. They’re probably itching to play a game because we’ve been practicing for a little while.”

“We’re gonna have ups and downs for sure in this tournament, so it’s just really about sticking together and keeping an even keel,” added Green. “Don’t get too high. Don’t get too low. Just keep going do your job, and we’ll be fine.”

LOOSE PUCKS

The Canadian Elite Hockey League named Buffaloes goaltender Kael Svenson to its first all-star team, following his stellar ride to the Telus Cup. The Calgarian posted a 15-3 record with a 2.58 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage in the regular season and then sizzled in the playoffs with a 10-2 mark, a sub-.200 GAA and a .950 save percentage … The CEHL also saluted Buffs forward Caleb Matthews as the Pacific Player of the Year, after he tallied 29 goals and 93 points in 47 games this season … The gold-medal final next Sunday will be broadcast live nationally (TSN, 2 p.m.). The semifinals are being live-streamed by Hockey Canada .
