Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

Considering the Synology DS1621+ is basically just a compact black box, non-NAS fans mightn't be able to understand why this one had the TechRadar Pro team so excited.

CPU : AMD Ryzen V1500B (quad-core 2.2 GHz) RAM: 4GB DDR4 ECC (Dual slot upgradeable to 32GB) Drive Bays: 6 x 3.5”/2.5” + 2 x M.2 Caching Max Capacity: 108TB LAN ports: 4 x RJ-45 1GbE PCIe Expansion: 1x Gen3 8x Slot USB 3.0 ports: 3 Hardware Encryption: AES-NI Dimensions: 282 x 243 x 166 mm Weight: 5.1kg Warranty: 3 years (extendable to 5 years)

Is it its inclusion of dual M.2 NVMe SSD slots? No. The PCIe slot for expansion cards? Nope again! Actually wait... yes, those last two are definitely exciting, but they're not exactly new, and the DS1621+ truly stands out thanks to something that is: its AMD Ryzen CPU, which is a first for a Synology NAS, and a welcome change in a space that's dominated by Intel processors.

Of course, businesses that already have a NAS such as Synology's own excellent DS1618+ might not be so excited, and the upgraded DS1621+ has a lot to prove. But for those businesses who are looking at upgrading from a less-capable NAS, or getting a NAS for the first time, the DS1621+ is worth investigating.

Synology DS1621+ price and availability

The Synology DS1621+ with the default 4GB of RAM will set you back $799  / £799 / AU$1,499, and adding a 16GB memory upgrade module will cost you an additional $350 / £400 / AU$600.

The DS1621+ also supports PCIe add on cards, including the basic single 10GbE E10G18-T1 for $160 / £150 / AU$250, the dual port E10G18-T2 for $270 / £270 / AU$420, and the dual-port SPF+ ready E10G17-F2 for $280 / £275 / AU$450. It also support a range of third party PCIe network cards, which are listed on the Synology site.

If you fill up the six internal 3.5" drive bays, the DS1621+'s core storage can be further expanded via eSATA using up to two Synology DX517 Expansion Units, which cost around $570 / £500 / AU$750 each.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+

Design and features

Under the hood of the DS1621+ we have a Ryzen V1500B CPU, packing four cores that burble along at 2.2GHz. In contrast to many Intel NAS CPUs, it supports two threads per core instead of just one. One downside to this AMD chip is the lack of hardware transcoding, meaning this is not really a NAS aimed at those who want higher-end video capabilities.

The DS1621+ comes populated with 4GB of ECC DDR4 in one slot of two slots, and can support up to 32GB. Despite the higher price, it’s great to see the ECC RAM used for improved protection against data corruption.

The NAS has two M.2 2280 NVMe slots built in, leaving the PCIe x8 slot free for network upgrades. Notably, the M.2 slots are for caching drives only, and can’t actually be used to increase your storage capacity. Round the back are four gigabit LAN ports supporting link aggregation and failover, which means you can boost performance beyond gigabit, provided you have a compatible managed switch. 2.5GbE would have been fantastic, and is offered by some of the competition at a similar price point - albeit with lower performance and no ECC RAM.

You also get three USB 3.0 ports (one on the front) plus dual eSATAs. The latter is used for adding external drive bay expansions, and an extra 16 bays and 108TB total is possible. The NAS CPU itself has no fan on the heatsink, but the DS1621+ has dual rear 92mm fans that provide decent airflow, and keep your drive array from getting too hot.

Setup and software

Getting the Synology DS1621+ up and running is as simple as dropping some drives into the tooless bays, plugging it in, hitting the power button  and pointing your browser at find.synology.com , or heading to the NAS IP address. Installing SSDs is via the drive bays at the front, while adding a PCIe card involves removing a couple of screws and the outer shell. The RAM is accessed on the bottom of the NAS under a dedicated cover.

Much of the value of a Synology NAS comes from the software, and the DS1621+ is no exception. The full list of features and options is extremely long. Fortunately Synology have a handy online demo where you can try it out yourself. There are also over 100 different apps available that can add extra functionality - you can check out the list here .

As hinted at earlier, the DS1621+ isn’t media focused - it's aimed at more business-oriented tasks such as data storage, backups, surveillance, virtual machines and other mid-range server work. A range of NAS-hosted productivity apps are included as part of the DSM OS, including Synology Drive, Calendar, Office and more, which is comparable to your own privately hosted array of collaborative Google Docs products.

Synology Surveillance Station is another key app, and it's a great option for businesses that want to create an affordable camera and security system that is easily set up and managed. Synology virtual machine manager is likewise also very handy, as it allows you to quickly and simply set up instances of Windows and Linux that can be remotely accessed.

The Synology mobile apps are also worthy of a mention, and make it very easy to access and manage your NAS remotely.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+

Another big focus for businesses is data backup, and Synology does make it very easy. While backups can be done in numerous ways, Synology has created a free all-in-one app called Active Backup for Business that will let you do many elements in one place. Since the DS1621+ is a business focused NAS, we installed the app and put it to the test. (It's also available to try out through the Synology demo site linked above.)

The thing that caught our eye is that the software can backup cloud data from Google, as well Microsoft 365 - definitely an area that can be tricky to manage. It also has backup support for computers, servers and virtual machines. Generally, Active Backup for Business was easy to set up, and the online documentation is reasonably good. There’s quite a few hoops to jump through when using it for Google Workspace (aka G Suite), whereas local network backups are much easier.

Backing up and restoring our data had no issues, albeit for a number of devices only comparable to a small business. It’s a pretty good overall solution when paired with the DS1621+, and for a small but business looking to get into their first comprehensive backup, it’s a nice selling point.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+

Performance and testing

We dropped six 14TB Seagate IronWolf  HDDs into the DS1621+, configured in Synology Hybrid Synology RAID. We stuck with the 4GB of RAM, but for good measure we also added an older but still fast Samsung 960 Pro 500GGB M.2 NVME SSD, plus a Synology E10G18-T1 10 GbE network card. NAS performance has a lot of factors, and despite the Ryzen CPU giving up to double the processing power of a comparable CPU such as the Intel C3538 (used in the DS1618+), there are still other bottlenecks in the system.

Our testing found the overall performance of the DS1621+ excellent, and it has plenty of grunt to run a wide variety of apps, host virtual machines, manage a IP camera system and more at the same time. The NAS was able to saturate a 1gBE connection no matter what else we had it doing, peaking at 729 Mbps reading and 710 Mbps writing. With the 10 GbE PCIe connection, it hit 3889 Mbps reading, and 2146Mbps writing, which is getting closer to the limits of the drive array.

In our testing we saw performance for random access improve up to 2.1x using SSD caching, but for most uses it was a lot lower. The biggest real world difference was when running multiple virtual machines, which were a lot more responsive with SSD caching. We also tested with 16GB of RAM, which helped a lot for memory heavy applications.

The DS1621+is pretty efficient (we peaked at 77 watts with drives, but mostly used under 40 watts) so the fans did not have to work too hard, but a decent drive amount of noise escapes the NAS.

What does all this mean for real world use? The DS1621+ is fast enough to get the best from your existing network, can work effectively as a server, and has plenty of upgrade options to leapfrog potential bottlenecks for more specific applications. In other words, a great result.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+

 Final verdict

It’s not perfect, but for the right business looking for fast yet affordable mid-range data handling, the DS1621+ has a lot to offer. It’s easy to bemoan the lack of 2.5GbE but the PCIe slot means 10GbE is a reasonably priced upgrade for those who truly need it, plus you get SSD caching built in.

As always, the Synology software experience is fantastic, and the range of productivity apps only continues to improve and grow. The Ryzen CPU is a joy despite the lack of media focused features, and we hope to see more AMD based NAS in the future.

Overall Synology has outdone itself, and the DS1621+ is a very versatile little business NAS for a fair price.

Should I buy the Synology DiskStation DS1621+?

 buy it if....

You want to run server applications The powerful little Ryzen CPU is great at running multiple resource hungry apps, such as virtual machines or a large surveillance camera setup. Even better, it doesn’t compromise network speed when under load.

You'll use SSD caching Having dual M.2 SSD slots built in is a huge win for users that need fast access to cached data, and want to maximise performance without needing to add in a PCIe card.

You will likely need speed upgrades in the future The PCIe slot on the DS1621+ means you can easily (and relatively cheaply) add one or two 10GbE ethernet ports if the need for bandwidth exceeds the four built in gigabit connections.

 Don’t buy it if...

You already have a similar spec NAS The DS1621+ is a great all round option, but even with the Ryzen CPU and ECC RAM, it’s not a mind blowing update over many of the excellent older Synology models.

You need media specific features The Ryzen CPU brings ECC RAM, but also means no media focused features such as hardware transcoding or HDMI. That’s no issue for the intended buyers, but worth noting.

You want 2.5 or 10GbE out of the box Being able to install a PCIe card is great, but if you need very high speed network access right from day one, consider a different model with 2.5 or 10GbE built in.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ Review

Synology 1621 plus side

The Synology DiskStation DS1621+ is a compact, power-driven NAS designed to give smaller businesses an effective way to store and protect their important data. This 6-bay NAS solution features an AMD Ryzen CPU and two M.2 2280 slots for NVMe Cache to highlight its focus on performance. It also can be equipped with two DX517 expansion units, which allows users to expand as their data requirements grow with up to 16 drives for a maximum capacity of 108TB.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ side

For connectivity, the Synology NAS is equipped with four RJ-45 1GbE LAN ports, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, and two eSATA ports. If organizations need to more, they can build on the functionality of the DS1621+ via its PCIe Gen3 x8 slot (x4 link). This allows them to add components like a 10GbE network adapter card or another M.2 NVMe drive slot to significantly boost performance.

The DS1621 line also comes in an xs model. One of the major differences between the two units is the CPU, as the DS1621xs+ is equipped with an Intel Xeon D-1527 4-core 2.2GHz (Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz) compared to the DS1621+’s AMD CPU mentioned above. The DS1621xs+ also comes equipped with a 10GbE port, while the DS1621+ only features 1GbE. In addition, the base xs model comes with 8GB of RAM versus the 4GB of the DS1621+ (though both can be expanded up to 32GB) and has a larger maximum single volume size of 200 TB (this build requires 32GB of RAM and works with RAID 5 or RAID 6 groups only). These differences make the DS1621+ the much more affordable one of the two.

Like all Synology devices, the DS1621+ features the highly versatile Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM). This NAS operating system manages all aspects of the device and provides users with a range of applications to fit virtually any need or use case. For example, the Central Management System allows organizations to manage all their Synology NAS devices from a centralized console, while Synology High Availability provides a smooth transition between clusters servers when an unexpected failure occurs.

Backed by a 3-year warranty, the Synology DiskStation DS1621+ goes for roughly $800 for the diskless model.

Enterprise Synthetic Workload Analysis

Our enterprise shared storage and hard drive benchmark process preconditions each drive into steady-state with the same workload the device will be tested with under a heavy load of 16 threads with an outstanding queue of 16 per thread, and then tested in set intervals in multiple thread/queue depth profiles to show performance under light and heavy usage. Since hard drives reach their rated performance level very quickly, we only graph out the main sections of each test.

Preconditioning and Primary Steady-State Tests:

  • Throughput (Read+Write IOPS Aggregate)
  • Average Latency (Read+Write Latency Averaged Together)
  • Max Latency (Peak Read or Write Latency)
  • Latency Standard Deviation (Read+Write Standard Deviation Averaged Together)

Our Enterprise Synthetic Workload Analysis includes four profiles based on real-world tasks. These profiles have been developed to make it easier to compare to our past benchmarks as well as widely-published values such as max 4k read and write speed and 8k 70/30, which is commonly used for enterprise drives.

  • 100% Read or 100% Write
  • 70% Read, 30% Write

For our testing, we configured the Synology DiskStation in RAID6 in both iSCSI and SMB using both an HDD and SSD configuration using the following drive:

  • 6 x WD Red NAS HDD  (14TB)
  • 6 x Samsung SM863 SSD  (960GB)

In the first of our enterprise workloads, we measured a long sample of random 4K performance with 100% write and 100% read activity. Looking at IOPS, the Synology DiskStation DS1621+ showed a performance of 867 IOPS write and 529 IOPS read in SMB and 898 IOPS write, and 3,505 IOPS read in iSCSI using HDDs. With SSDs, the number showed an expected drastic improvement, showing 43,290 IOPS write and 25,197 IOPS read in SMB and 43,180 46 IOPS write and 99,252 IOPS read in iSCSI.

nas synology tour ds1621

In 4K average latency (where lower is better), the Synology DS1621+ hit 295.2ms write and 483.3ms read in SMB and 284.8ms write and a much lower 73.0ms read in iSCSI (HDD configuration). With SSDs, the latency fell to 5.91ms and 10.16ms write/read in SMB and 5.93ms and 2.58ms write/read in iSCSI.

nas synology tour ds1621

Switching over to 4K max latency, the DS1621+ showed a performance of 7,124.7ms write and 2,199.2ms read in SMB and 4,790.5ms write and 1,916.7ms read in iSCSI. In our SSD configuration, the Synology NAS showed figures of 144.25ms write and 42.33ms read in SMB and 346.72ms write and 44.16ms read in iSCSI.

nas synology tour ds1621

For our last 4K test, we looked at standard deviation. Here, we saw performance figures of 540.16ms write and 490.5ms read in SMB and 434.6ms write and 77.6ms read in iSCSI (HDDs). With our SSD configuration, performance increased to 8.1ms read and 9.03ms write in SMB and 12.29ms write and 2.48ms read in iSCSI.

nas synology tour ds1621

Our next benchmark measures 100% 8K sequential throughput with a 16T16Q load in 100% read and 100% write operations. Here, the DS1621+ was able to hit 47,988 IOPS write and 54,167 IOPS read in SMB and 48,657 IOPS write, and 54,529 IOPS read in iSCSI. With SSDs, the NAS showed a slight improvement with 54,141 IOPS write and 56,421 IOPS read in SMB.  In our iSCSI SSD configuration, we saw the best performance with writes and reads of 56,194 IOPS and 57,115 IOPS, respectively.

nas synology tour ds1621

Compared to the fixed 16 thread, 16 queue max workload we performed in the 100% 4K write test, our mixed workload profiles scale the performance across a wide range of thread/queue combinations. In these tests, we span workload intensity from 2 thread/2 queue up to 16 thread/16 queue. With throughput, SMB posted a range of 302 IOPS to 346 IOPS while iSCSI hit a range of 481 IOPS to 1,290 IOPS when using HDDs. In our SSD configuration, iSCSI was by far the best with 8,873 IOPS at 2T/2Q and finishing off at 51,101 IOPS at 16T/16Q.

nas synology tour ds1621

Looking at average latency performance figures in our SSD configuration, our HDD configuration showed a range of 13.16ms to 738.46ms in SMB, while iSCSI recorded 8.28ms to 198.33ms. Using SSDs, the Synology DS1621+ showed 0.42ms to 18.1ms in SMB while iSCSI recorded 0.44ms to 5ms.

nas synology tour ds1621

For maximum latency in our HDD configuration, we saw 1,170.43ms to 5,147.56ms in SMB and 998.52ms to 4,144.79ms in iSCSI, while our SSD configuration posted scores of 28.01ms to 479.85ms and 40.18ms to 129.84ms in SMB and iSCSI, respectively.

nas synology tour ds1621

Looking at standard deviation in our HDD configuration, the DS1621+ posted results of 29.92ms to 650.1ms in SMB and 24.01ms to 395.19ms in iSCSI, while our SDD configuration posted scores of 0.43ms to 23.07ms (SMB) and 0.37ms to 6.84ms (iSCSI).

nas synology tour ds1621

The last Enterprise Synthetic Workload benchmark is our 128K test, which is a large-block sequential test that shows the highest sequential transfer speed for a device. In this workload scenario, the HDD DS1621+ configuration had 431.7MB/s write and 455.4MB/s read in SMB and 436.3MB/s write and 455.2MB/s read in iSCSI. With SSDs, the performance saw a slight increase in both SMB and iSCSI, showing 458.3MB/s write and 462.8MB/s read and 457.7MB/s read and 462.1MB/s write, respectively.

nas synology tour ds1621

The Synology DiskStation DS1621+ is a compact 6-bay NAS built to easily handle most small business needs with its solid performance. This affordable DiskStation is highlighted supports up to two DX517 expansion units, which increases the number of available drive bays to 16 for a maximum capacity of 108TB. Other hardware features include an AMD Ryzen V1500B 4-core 64-bit CPU at 2.2 GHz, up to 32GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM (standard models ship with 4GB), dual M.2 2280 NVMe SSD bays for caching, and four 1GbE ports.

To gauge its performance, we configured the NAS in both HDD (WD Red 14TB drives) and SSD (Samsung SM863 960GB) builds using both iSCSI and SMB connectivity. First up is our HDD tests. During our 100% read/write random 4K test, the DS1621+ showed IOPS write and 529 IOPS read in SMB and 898 IOPS write and 3,505 IOPS read in iSCSI with average latencies of 295.2ms write and 483.3ms read in SMB and 284.8ms write and a much lower 73.0ms read in iSCSI. 8K sequential was able to hit 47,988 IOPS write and 54,167 IOPS read in SMB and 48,657 IOPS write and 54,529 IOPS read in iSCSI. 128K Large Block HDD results recorded 431.7MB/s write and 455.4MB/s read in SMB and 436.3MB/s write and 455.2MB/s read in iSCSI.

Our DS1621+ SSD configuration, as expected, recorded much better performance. In 4K, we saw 43,290 IOPS write and 25,197 IOPS read in SMB and 43,180 46 IOPS write and 99,252 IOPS read in iSCSI. Average latency was latency fell to 5.91ms and 10.16ms write/read in SMB and 5.93ms and 2.58ms write/read in iSCSI. For 8K sequential, our iSCSI SSD configuration saw the best performance with writes and reads of 56,194 IOPS and 57,115 IOPS, respectively, while average latency recorded a range of just 0.42ms to 18.1ms (SMB) and 0.44ms to 5ms (iSCSI). In our 128K Large Block tests, the SSD configuration recorded performed slightly better (compared to the HDD setup) in both SMB and iSCSI, showing 458.3MB/s write and 462.8MB/s read and 457.7MB/s read and 462.1MB/s write, respectively.

The DS1621+ is another great addition to Synology’s small business solutions portfolio with the ability to scale as an organization grows. Though it might not be as fast as the “xs” version (i.e., DS1621xs+ ), the Synology DiskStation DS1621+ is still a powerful, scalable NAS solution that will satisfy most small-business use cases at a much lower price tag.

If you're looking for the best NAS for home use, Synology has plenty of great options that start off as low as $100. The NAS manufacturer also has a strong portfolio of high-end options aimed at small businesses and enthusiast users, and we're taking a look at the most recent entrant in this series, the DiskStation DS1621+.

The DiskStation DS1621+ is a six-bay behemoth that is one of the most interesting NAS launches from Synology yet. The standout here is that the NAS is powered by an AMD Ryzen CPU, a first for Synology. The CPU delivers noticeably improved performance from the Intel-powered enclosures that we've seen over the years in this category, and it makes the DS1621+ immediately stand out.

So let's take a look at what Synology's first Ryzen-powered NAS brings to the table, and why it is a great option if you're in the market for a new NAS enclosure in 2021.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ Specs

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ review

The DiskStation DS1621+ is aimed at the high-end segment, and as a result it doesn't miss out on any features. The standout feature this time around is the Ryzen V1500B, a Zen-based chipset that has four cores and eight threads that go up to 2.2GHz. It is a considerable boost in performance from what we've seen in this category, and that makes things very interesting.

Here's a rundown of what you're getting with the DiskStation DS1621+:

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ Design and features

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ review

The DiskStation DS1621+ doesn't differ too much from other Synology enclosures in terms of design. The packaging consists of the NAS itself along with a power cord and two Cat5e cables that are ideal for Gigabit connectivity. You'll also find a set of plastic keys for locking the drive bays, a few screws, and an installation guide.

The DS1621+ combines a familiar design with plenty of connectivity options.

The front of the NAS is dominated by six drive trays. As is the norm, these trays are made out of plastic, and have a tool-less design that makes it about as straightforward as possible to slot in HDDs. You will need to use the provided screws if you're interested in mounting 2.5-inch SSDs.

Each tray has a locking mechanism, and you can use the provided key to lock individual bays. The two M.2 slots are located inside the housing, and these also do not require any screws — just slot in an NVMe SSD and the standoff on the other end secures the drive. At the bottom of the NAS is where you'll find two SODIMM slots; the DS1621+ comes with 4GB of ECC DDR4 memory out of the box, and you can add up to 32GB of RAM in total.

You'll find a status and alert LED at the front, and dedicated LEDs for each Gigabit Ethernet port. The power button straddles the two sets of LEDs, and there is a USB 3.0 port located at the front that lets you connect an external drive. In terms of connectivity at the back, you'll find four Gigabit Ethernet ports, two USB 3.0 ports, and two eSATA ports for adding additional drive bays. While the DS1621+ doesn't come with 10GbE connectivity out of the box, you get a PCIe slot that lets you add a 10GbE network card.

The one area where Synology is doing things differently is the power delivery. The DS1621+ comes in at a hefty 11.2lb (5.1kg), and that's because it has an internal PSU that can handle a load of up to 250W. That means you don't need to deal with a power adapter on the cable itself anymore.

Now, switching to an internal PSU makes things that much more seamless, but having an external power deliver is easier should things go awry in this area. That said, I've used over a dozen Synology NAS enclosures over the last decade and didn't run into any issues, so you don't need to worry too much about the change.

Elsewhere, you will find two 92mm fans at the back, and they ensure the drive bays don't get too hot. They idle under minimal load and kick in only when needed, and you have the ability to adjust their speed manually should you wish to do so. For what it's worth, they don't make too much noise even when the NAS is under heavy load, and are silent most of the time.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ Performance

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ review

The differentiator for Synology continues to be the software, and with DiskStation Manager 7.0 (DSM) now available in beta, the manufacturer is extending its lead in this particular area. DSM has an exhaustive list of features and a clean UI that makes it easy to get started.

The DS1621+ delivers reliable performance and comes with a vast array of software features.

The web-based operating system is based on Linux, and it takes just 10 minutes to configure the NAS and set things up. There's a web assistant that guides you through the initial configuration, and once you boot into DSM, you get a smorgasbord of configuration options.

You can manage storage pools, set up Active Directory, install and run VMs, host a dedicated email server, VPN server, or even a full-fledged website, office collaboration tools like a shared word editor and spreadsheet software — similar to Google Docs and Sheets — and so much more. If you're looking at a NAS for an office-focused environment, there is a lot to like here.

DSM's feature-set is unmatched right now, and it is this extensibility that gives the DS1621+ a distinct edge. Then there's the fact that the Ryzen V1500B delivers better performance than its Intel predecessors for productivity-related tasks. It doesn't measure up quite as well for Plex 4K transcodes as it doesn't have an integrated GPU, but you'll still find a native Plex client and can use the NAS for direct play — streaming files to any device on your home network or over the internet.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ The competition

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ review

The DS1621+ is a fantastic choice if you're in the market for a 6-bay enclosure for productivity use cases. But if you're looking for an enclosure with 2.5GbE or 4K Plex transcodes, you will like what the QNAP TS-653D has to offer. The 6-bay NAS enclosure has 2.5GbE connectivity, PCIe slot for 10GbE network card, 4K video transcoding, full integration with Plex, and ability to install VMs with ease.

Coming in at $647 , it is also more affordable than the DS1621+. The downside is that the software isn't as intuitive to use as DiskStation Manager, and you miss out on the excellent Btrfs file system.

If you want even better performance and native 10GbE connectivity, the DS1621xs+ is a great option to consider. The NAS has a similar set of features as the regular DS1621+ but you get 10GbE connectivity as standard, and the Xeon D-1527 is outstanding for productivity-related use cases. You also get 8GB of RAM and a 5-year warranty as standard, but the NAS retails for $1,600 , double that of the regular DS1621+.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ Should you buy?

Synology DiskStation DS1621+ review

You should buy this if ...

You're looking for a business-focused NAS

The DS1621+ is packed with features: you can store up to 96TB of data on the NAS, add up to 32GB of DDR4 memory, and slot in two M.2 SSDs as cache drives. The Ryzen CPU delivers outstanding performance, you get four Gigabit Ethernet ports that you can link together, and you have all the USB 3.0 connectivity ports you could want.

You need great software features

DiskStation Manager is the best software you'll find on any NAS enclosure, and the fact that DSM 7.0 is now available makes things that much more interesting. You'll find office collaboration tools — including document and spreadsheet editing utilities — virtualization tools, and so much more in DSM.

You want a NAS that lasts several years

With a three-year warranty that can easily be extended to five years, the DS1621+ is designed to last.

You should not buy this if ...

You need a NAS for Plex 4K transcodes

The DS1621+ is aimed at businesses, and while it delivers outstanding performance for virtualization and office collaboration tasks, it doesn't feature an embedded GPU for 4K transcoding. So if you're looking for a NAS for Plex, consider the DiskStation DS920+ or the QNAP TS-451D2 .

You want 10GbE out of the box

While the DS1621+ has four Gigabit Ethernet ports that can be linked together, it is missing 2.5 or 10 Gigabit connectivity out of the box. There is a PCIe slot that lets you add a 10GbE network card, but the fact that you don't get even a single 2.5GbE is a glaring omission in this category.

Overall, the DS1621+ gets a lot right. The switch to a Ryzen chipset has led to a noticeable increase in performance from its predecessors, and Synology has outfitted the NAS with all the features to make it a standout option in a small business environment. The six drive bays hold up to a total of 96TB of storage, and you can add two DX1517 expansion drives to get 16 additional bays.

While this particular NAS is aimed at businesses, it is likely we'll see Synology introduce an enthusiast-focused option with a Ryzen CPU that has an embedded GPU for Plex 4K transcodes. But if you don't care about multimedia streaming, the DS1621+ has everything you're looking for in a high-end NAS enclosure.

4.5 out of 5

Yes, $800 is a lot of money to spend on a NAS, but you are getting one of the fastest enclosures money can buy today, and the sheer number of features on offer here make the DS1621+ a stellar choice for small businesses. The NAS comes with a three-year warranty as standard, and you can easily extend that to a five-year warranty.

As for the best hard drives for NAS enclosures, my recommendation would be the IronWolf Pro series . Seagate's IronWolf Pro drives deliver rock-solid reliability and are ideally suited for the DS1621+.

Synology DiskStation DS1621+

Synology DiskStation DS1621+

Bottom line: The DiskStation DS1621+ is one of the best NAS enclosures for small businesses. The Ryzen-powered hardware is significantly faster than its Intel predecessors, you get plenty of connectivity options, and the DS1621+ a great overall choice if you want a high-end enclosure.
