Avoid High-Altitude Sickness

To avoid high-altitude sickness, here are a few steps you can take to prepare and mitigate the risks:

1. Stay Hydrated : Drink water in small sips every 10 minutes. Carrying a hydration bag can make it easier to stay hydrated without having to stop frequently. Hydration helps your body adjust to the altitude more efficiently.

2. Consider Medication : Diamox is a medication that can help prevent altitude sickness. However, it’s important to consult with your doctor before your trip, especially if you have any allergies or medical conditions. Your doctor can advise on the appropriate dosage and whether it’s safe for you to take.

3. Eat a High Potassium Diet: Foods high in potassium, such as bananas, avocados, and potatoes, can help your body adjust to high altitudes. A diet rich in these foods before and during your trip can be beneficial.

4. Oxygen Support : We carry oxygen cylinders for emergency use. Our guide is trained to recognize the symptoms of oxygen deprivation and will provide oxygen from a 10-15 litre big cylinder or a 2-litre portable cylinder if required. It’s critical to listen to your guide and communicate any discomfort you may be experiencing.

5. Stay Positive and Don’t Panic : A good mindset is crucial when dealing with high altitudes. Being aware that you’re in a high-altitude area with less oxygen is important, but it’s equally important not to panic. Stay positive and trust in your preparation and resources. Your guide will instruct you on what to do and how to handle different sections of your journey effectively. Listening to your guide and maintaining a positive outlook can significantly improve your ability to adapt and enjoy your high-altitude adventure.

6. Expedition Program Plan: The expedition program has been customized in such a way that we will gradually ascend from lower altitudes to higher altitudes day by day. This approach helps in acclimatizing to the changing oxygen levels and reducing the risk of high-altitude sickness. Gradual ascent allows your body time to adjust to the altitude changes, making the journey safer and more enjoyable. This methodical increase in altitude is designed to enhance your body’s adaptation process, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable experience as you reach higher elevations.

Remember, preparation and acclimatization are key. Allow your body time to adjust to the altitude by taking it easy the first few days and being mindful of your physical condition.

Our exciting riding journey begins in Kathmandu, Nepal's magnificent capital.  Kathmandu , with its temple squares, soaring stupas, and cobblestone ancient pathways, is a mystical destination. From there, we go to Pokhara , Nepal's sports hub via an ancient Newari town Bandipur and Tatopani where natural hot springs are available.

Leaving Pokhara, our Royal Enfield soars towards Muktinath along the Himalayan foothills in the background. Then our ride continues to the Apple Garden of Nepal- Marpha to Dhampus, and then on to Chitwan National Park, which covers 360 square miles and is one of the best places in Asia to see wildlife in its native habitat.

The final stage of our journey takes us to Daman , a village lying on the outskirts of Kathmandu making a one-night stay there before we return back to Kathmandu.

Itinerary details.

HimayanTrekkers representative will welcome you to the airport terminal and transfer you to the hotel. After your check-in formalities at the hotel, you are on your own. Later, we will pre discuss your riding adventure either at our office or at your hotel lobby. Later, you can roam the streets of the Thamel area and get a night glimpse of the area.

After a warm hearty breakfast, we kick off our Royal Enfield and ride towards an ancient Newari village named Bandipur to the west of Kathmandu. We arrive in Naubise after starting along the very twisty Prithivi Highway from Naudanda. From there, the ride will be relatively straightforward until Galchi.

Pass through Kurintar's cable car station to reach Mugling, the most popular highway intersection. We travel west and cross the bridge that spans the Trishuli and Marsyangdi Rivers. Then, after a nice ride to Dumre and a detour over a hill, we arrive in Bandipur. The village servers a lovely hill station with 360-degree views of the Annapurna, Fishtail, Manaslu, and Ganesh Himal ranges.

We enjoy the stunning sunrise view from a hilltop in Bandipur in the morning. After exploring the area, we set out on the road that leads to Pokhara. Today's trip is quite short and takes place on a less congested road.

The Annapurna ranges and the distinctive Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) come into focus as we get closer to Pokhara. When we arrive in Pokhara, we take a short lunch break and continue the ride towards Tatopani.

The route is pleasant and paved until you reach Beni which is about a three-hour ride away from Pokhara. The route becomes hard and dusty from here on out. You'll be riding along the ridges of mountains and pass by massive waterfalls before we come across Tatopani's natural hot spring.

After breakfast in Tatopani, we ride to Muktinath, a revered Hindu site where century-old temples are carved into the mountainside, eagles soar overhead, and glacial rivers twist their way through snow-capped peaks at an altitude of 3800 meters. Today's ride will cover a total distance of 68 kilometers entirely on dirt roads along with awe-inspiring scenery and a breathtaking mountain outlook. We make a lunch stopover in Jomsom and continue till we reach Muktinath.

Early in the morning, we visit the sacred temple of Muktinath. Interested might take a bath from the 108 taps there which are believed to clear off all the sins we have done. After our temple darshan, we return to our lodge and take a warm breakfast.

Soon after we start our Royal Enfield engines and head towards another beautiful village called Marpha. The rest of the day, we spend exploring the village, the apple garden, interacting with the locals, and tasting the apple products like apple pie, apple brandy, etc.

Our ride from Marpha to Dhampus takes us across to Annapurna ranges and Dhaulagiri. We follow the path ascending towards Yak Kharka and into the Kali Gandaki Valley. Once we reach Dhampus Village, we will check in at one of the lodges. You can also stay at a homestay and try the local cuisines, listen to the stories of the mountains, and get the insights into typical Nepali village lifestyle.

Leaving Dhampus, we ride to Sarangkot, a peak that offers breathtakingly gorgeous and expansive views of the Himalayas. Sarangkot is also the center of airborne adventure, so if you've ever wanted to try paragliding, come to Sarangkot.

Prepare for some traffic through Pokhara's entrance, where you'll have to put your driving talents to the test. We'll arrive near Phewa Lake in the afternoon, and you'll have the rest of the afternoon to explore on your own.

Today, we'll ride to some of Pokhara's most famous sights. The motorbike sightseeing tour begins with a journey to Mahendra Cave and a stop at Seti River Gorge along the route. After a nice lunch, we continue our exploration of Pokhara.

The Annapurna Mountains are mirrored in the tranquil waters of Phewa Tal when the weather permits, making it perfect for boating. Then take a stroll to the Pagoda of Peace, which gives stunning views of the surrounding lake and mountains. We ride to Davis Fall and enjoy the area before returning to the lakeside for the night

We start the day with a warm breakfast at the resort and hop into engines to make a kick towards Chitwan. We ride along the road lined with beautiful sceneries like babbling brooks, lush green hillsides, and breathtaking mountain views.

When you arrive in Chitwan, check into your accommodation and relax. We will visit a Tharu (native people) settlement in the evening to learn about their distinct lifestyle and culture.

Today will be a full day of jungle activities. We start with a jungle stroll, where you can see a variety of birds. In the afternoon, we'll go to the Rapti River for an exhilarating Elephant Bathing Session. On this guided safari tour, we will see one-horned rhinos, monkeys, crocodiles, and possibly, if you're lucky, a regal Bengal tiger, leopard, or bear.

In the afternoon, we'll go into the jungle in search of Asian crocodiles, then board a boat to witness them in their native environment along the Narayani River. Then, in the late afternoon, we'll go to an Elephant Breeding Center to learn how these massive creatures are taught and cared for.

In the evening, we enjoy our traditional Tharu dinner with a cultural program.

We ride south after breakfast and follow the road to Daman. The roads are peaceful and there is little traffic; there are bends after corners, breathtaking views, and a destination that will leave you speechless. The Annapurna range, Manaslu range, Langtang range, and Mt Everest can all be seen from Daman.

From Daman, the journey follows the route through the jungle for a bit before turning into the curvy mountain roadway that will take you to Kathmandu. Once the check-in formalities are completed, you have the remainder of the day on your own.

You can opt. to have guided sightseeing of some of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Kathmandu Valley or explore the traditional markets of Ason, Indrachowk, and Thamel to pick up some mementos for yourself or friends or families.

At the dinner time, you will be picked up for a team dinner as a goodbye to you at an authentic Nepali restaurant where you can enjoy the traditional food along with a cultural show.

Our Nepal motorcycle adventure has come to an end. Depending on the time of your flight, you will have free time after breakfast to do shopping or sightseeing in Kathmandu. One of our representatives will drop you at the airport 3 hours before your scheduled flight.

HimalayanTrekkers wish you a safe journey to your next destination and hope that you had a fantastic time.

Nepal Motorcycle Trip National Parks

By Anurag Kakkar

A passionate adventure rider who knows India like the back of his hand.

Nepal Motorcycle Trip Report

I’m drawn to the Himalayas. Pulled in, mesmerised and addicted to its gargantuan peaks. This addiction has led to an extensive exploration of the region from Leh Ladakh to Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in India.

But I can’t stop there. Even though Nepal is India’s neighbour and the two close countries share the Himalayan range, Nepal is still home to the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest and seven other peaks that belong to the ‘Eight Thousanders’ (a group of mountains towering over 8,000m high) – it’s a different adventure altogether.

Nepal Motorcycle Trip National Parks

Nepal’s Three Regions

Nepal is divided into three physiographic areas. Firstly, Himal (the mountain region containing snow; secondly, Pahad (mountain region that generally doesn’t contain snow); and thirdly, Terai (the valley region). Geographically, Nepal has seven provinces and I managed to cover five of them in 10 days on this motorcycle tour.

I explored the Himal, Pahad and Terai, passed through towns, villages, plains and mountains and experienced challenging and relaxing days within the ten-day journey through this beautiful country.

Nepal Motorcycle Trip National Parks

Nepal’s National Parks

The journey started in New Delhi, India. With my Kawasaki Versys 650 I crossed into Nepal 375 miles later and headed to Bardia National Park.

My main target was to cover at least three of the main National parks: Bardia National Park, Banke National Park and Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. All three of them are well known for rare wildlife and various species of birds. The following were on my ‘must capture’ list: tigers, clouded leopards, rhinos, Bengal foxes, corsac foxes, Tibetan foxes, Asiatic elephants, marbled cats, Chinese pangolins and Tibetan wolves – to name a few.

These parks are untouched, natural and raw beauty that cannot in any possible way be compared to man-made attractions.

Bardia National Park

Bardia National Park has eco resorts setup for the travellers. Camping inside the park isn’t an option because free movement of elephants is common even in the buffer zone. There is also a habitat centre inside the park for the rhinos who need a sheltered recovery zone.

I left Bardia with mixed feelings, happy because I made it to my destination (after a nine-hour ride from New Delhi) and sad because I couldn’t complete a full safari as they were all cancelled due to bad weather.

Nepal Motorcycle Trip National Parks

Banke National Park

Banke National Park has been called a ‘Gift to Earth’. Tigers and four-horned antelopes are the main attraction for wildlife here. The park’s flora and fauna is a treat for travellers who enjoy silent beauty.

Shivapuri National Park

Shivapuri National Park lies on the outskirts of Kathmandu. You can get there by trekking for 2-3 hours, using a 4×4 or a high-powered motorcycle to battle the park’s challenging tracks.

There are a few Buddhist monasteries scattered within the park. Although I couldn’t visit all of the monasteries due to my packed schedule, I did visit a couple of them. The jungle is seriously dense and needs a certain level of skill to deal with it. A spectacular view overlooking the entire of Kathmandu can be captured from Zero Point in Shivapuri.

Pokhara Lake

After the thrills of the jungle, I set off towards the serene, calm and quiet Pokhara Lake where I pitched my tent for a few nights of camping. Being in the midst of hills, listening to chirping birds, laying under a night sky bursting with stars, hearing crickets cry and soft waves of water soothing your muscles is an experience that can’t be described in words. So, I’ll leave it for you to visit and experience yourself. I spent a full day lazing around and enjoying my own company before gathering enough energy to change direction and head for the Himalayas…

Nepal Motorcycle Trip National Parks

Motorcycling the Lower Mustang

I hit the road with Muktinath as my next targeted destination. Interestingly, Muktinath is also commonly known as lower Mustang. Maybe because of the exhilarating off-road experience it offers? Well, that’s my guess anyway.

If you’re riding a motorcycle into Nepal’s Lower Mustang, then a dirt-bike is your best option. An adventure bike is not apt for this type of terrain.

Even though it’s only about 74 miles from Pokhara, you will need to carry extra fuel to cover a distance of at least 310 miles. The drop inn mileage is huge because of the extremely challenging terrain.

Along with extra fuel you’ll also need extra engine oil, a puncture repair kit, tyre inflating pump and a bash plate is a must to avoid a broken engine cover.

You don’t need to carry food supplies as it’s readily available, but do not forget your camping gear!

To deal with the heavy luggage on my bike, I decided to leave my extra baggage at a roadside food stall and planned to pick it up on my way back. There is only one way in and out of the Mustang Valley so this plan worked just fine. The people are friendly, helpful and honest so leaving your stuff behind isn’t a problem.

The trouble taken and time spent to visit Mustang Valley was absolutely worth it. The entire journey is incredibly scenic and you can ride and admire stunning and famous peaks such as Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Machapuchare and a few others.

Nepal Motorcycle Trip National Parks

To Kathmandu

On my way back from Mustang I visited Sarangkot, which is famous as a take-off site for paragliding. But instead of taking to the sky, I decided to change my original plan and headed towards Kathmandu to enjoy some colour and vibrancy.

I checked into the Marriott and enjoyed the exact opposite experience of camping along the Pokhara Lake. Kathmandu offers so much for its visitors. It has an eclectic mix of temples, nightlife, shopping, food and fun. The city is so full of energy that it complements the calmness and serenity that the mountains and plains offer within this country.

Kathmandu is governed by good driving sense and most of the traffic is controlled by the traffic police – not traffic lights!

A few must visit places for shopping are Thamel, Ason and the Mangal Bazaars and I bet you will definitely find something to spend your money on…I did too. As you might already know, the Nepalese Army also referred to as the Gorkhali Army, is one of the best in the world. The symbolic weapon of the Nepalese Army is called a ‘Khukuri’, a specially designed knife that can be used as a tool and a weapon… so I had to pick one up as an awesome souvenir!

Nepali Diwali

Just like India, Nepal is a diverse country where you can experience a change of culture, language, dialect, food, traditional wear and weather every 60 miles. Being a food-lover and a cook, local flavours attract my palate and the thrill of tasting various local dishes, experiencing the flavours and talking about the cooking styles are a key component of my trips.

As luck would have it, I was in the midst of the festival season where Diwali (also called ‘Tihar’ in Nepal) was being celebrated and I wanted to enjoy every moment of it. This festival is celebrated for three continuous days and encompasses a lot of fun, delicious food, music and colour. Day one is called ‘Kaag Tihar’ or Crow festival. The Nepalese consider the crow as a messenger of the god of Death.

Day two is called ‘Kukur Tihar’ where dogs are worshipped. All the dogs on this day enjoy the luxury of wearing garlands and having good food. This is celebrated to acknowledge the close relationship between humans and dogs.

Day three is called ‘Bhai Tika’ or the festival of brothers where the sacred brother-sister relationship is celebrated. Traditionally the sisters apply a red mark or ‘tika’ on the brother’s forehead and the brothers promise to take care of their sisters. The days ends with a lot of good food, dance and music. It’s the biggest festival in Nepal. All shops are petrol stations are closed for the entire day – there’s no riding today… just join in and enjoy the incredible festival!

Jomsom Town

I was already in Varsali by then, camping and enjoying the great flavours of food and the colours of the festival. This place was about 44 miles from Jomsom town.

Entering Jomsom got me thinking, am I still on Earth?  The perfect combination of a small town situated on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, offering a view of Dhaulagiri and the Nilgiri Mountains was just beautiful and breath-taking.

Inhabited by ‘Thakali’ people, Jomsom offers great local food. A full meal is called ‘Thakali Thali’ primarily containing lentils, rice and vegetables or meat and refills of food items are free. Cow being declared as the national animal, Nepal is a no-beef country, sorry beef lovers, you’ll have to do with mutton!

Beef…no, Airport…yes! This little town boasts of an airport so if you choose not to drive or you are short of time, you can fly in too. It is just a 15-20 minute flight from Pokhara.

Nepal Motorcycle Trip National Parks

Nepal’s Temples

Now it was time for me to get religious, so a temple visit was on the cards and first up was the Monkey Temple. After climbing 365 steps I finally reached the temple and it was worth the effort. A combined mixture of Hinduism and Buddhism was a treat to the eyes.

Pashupatinath Temple was second on the list. One the biggest temples in Nepal and belonging to Lord Shiva – it’s quite the beauty. Sadly but rightfully, photography is not allowed inside this temple else I would have captured the largest Nani statue that I have ever seen in my life.

Time for tea

After taking God’s blessings I decided to treat myself to some fresh green tea. What better than to go to the source itself, so I hit the tea plantations next.

The various shades of green on show as you scan the massive tea gardens. The entire area is peppered with locals in their colourful attire working the farms.

Until next time

Nepal is bursting with incredible wonders and there’s nothing I’d love more than to spend more time exploring this beautiful country. But my clock was ticking, so it was time to head back home India. You could explore Nepal for years and only uncover a fraction of its beauty. You’ll love riding there… it’s heaven on earth.

About the author

Anurag Kakkar

I’m a passionate wildlife photographer, birder and biker. I have been riding motorcycles for 30 years and have ridden through Europe , Southeast Asia and Asia.

I’m based in New Delhi to be in close to the Himalayan ranges, which is one of my favourite destinations. Many international bikers have started their journey from my house in Delhi, which also acts as a base camp for their trips around India.

Some of my favourite destinations are the foothills of the Himalayas, Western Ghats, South-Eastern shores and the Great Indian Thar Desert, which can also be called my second home. There’s so much to see and explore in this beautiful country, which reminds me of a quote: “One has to be born thrice if you want to experience complete India” … and I’m only in my 40s!

What information do you require about the Nepal Himalayan Motorcycle Tour?

Nepal Motorbike Tours provide a variety of exhilarating excursions for both beginners and those who have traveled the world’s most difficult roads.

One of the many sights to see is the towering Himalayas, which glimmer from afar and gleam with unspoiled glaciers while guarding the country’s breath-taking splendor. Stunning vistas of evergreen forests, rivers, streams, colorful temples, and monasteries will improve your experience as you wonder through the serpentine roads, inquisitive what the next bend in the road would be like.

The villages and cities that dot the Kathmandu valley and lay concealed in the mountain ranges will reveal Nepal’s rich and intriguing history.

Paperwork required for Motorcycle tour in Nepal:

When riding in a foreign nation, always bring originals and good copies of your documents. I’d have the color copies laminated and cut to make them look as natural as feasible.

If they ask for the documentation, I always attempt to give them a copy first and only give them the originals if they ask for them. You don’t want your originals to be destroyed by being handled too much, especially on a long trip.

Passports and Visas:

It is recommended (and in many situations required) that you carry your passport with at least six months’ validity and a number of spare pages as soon as you leave your home country.

You’ll need to check with each nation you plan to visit to see if you’ll need a visa and if you’ll need to apply for one ahead of time or just show up and acquire one at the border. This is entirely dependent on the passport you are using, and you should contact the consulate or embassy of that country in your country for more information. If you’re heading to a distant or sensitive location, check to see if you’ll need a local permit, a filming permit, or something else.

Driving License:

Traveling with your complete driving license from your home country (attempt to get a duplicate if it’s a long trip) and an International Driving Permit (easily accessible for $5-$20 from your local post office or car club) is the recommended method.

If your driver’s license does not have a photo, the IDP is very important. In short, it’s worth having one for the small amount of money it costs.

Registration/Ownership Documents:

What to bring depends entirely on where you’re from and where your motorcycle is registered, but it’s even more necessary than your driver’s license! It would be your ‘logbook’ or vehicle registration document (VRD) in the UK, your registration certificate in Australia, and your state registration document AND a ‘title’ or ownership document in the United States.

In any event, they’ll require your chassis and engine / VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) as well as your name/address that matches your other identification. Customs officers will inspect these at every border crossing, and police officers will inspect them frequently if you are stopped over.

Frequently Asked Questions

The autumn and spring season is the best time to visit Nepal. During this time of the year, the weather is significantly clear, visibility is good and the temperature is moderate. So, if you are planning to visit Nepal for a trekking/hiking trip, we recommend you visit Nepal during Spring and Autumn. However, you can plan the trip any time of the year. The monsoon is not the best time to visit Nepal as this trip includes off-the-beat track and the road conditions are not suitable for motorbikes so from around mid-June to early August it's the monsoon season.

This tour is vastly different from other trips that Altitude Himalaya has created because this short trip covers all the mesmerizing attractions of Nepal that include all three great landmarks which are Hilly, the Himalayas, and terai. (Kathmandu, Pokhara and Terai) on this trip, you will get to closely observe the culture and attractions of these supreme places. This trip includes an adventurous motorbike ride that makes this trip one of a kind on its own.

During this trip, you can choose the clothing of your preference. However, we suggest you wear bright-colored clothing, preferably luminescent strips on the riding jackets or pants. This helps the other drivers and motorists on the road to see you from a distance and avoid the issue on the road. Also, it's better if you carry a mask, muffler and safety glasses that will help you protect yourself from clouds of dust on the road.

Foreign nationals with valid international driving licenses are allowed to drive in Nepal. One must need an international driving license to participate in the Nepal motorbike tour with us. You can get an international driving license from your local travel agent or online.

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the most favorable seasons to visit in Nepal. But for this trip, one can also visit during the winter (December to February) months. Monsoon (June to August) isn’t a favorable one. The weather in Autumn and Spring remains stable with an average temperature. During the winter there will be colder days and fog may affect driving in the Terai plain lands.

We arrange the Royal Enfield of two models that include 350CC and 500CC. Usually, we provide a 350CC model however you can upgrade it to 500CC if you wish. The upgrade will increase as the price ranges according to the upgrade.
