The M62 motorway is a major eastwest transportation route through Northern England, connecting Liverpool, Manchester and Hull. It starts at the junction of the M60 and the M62 near Manchester, and terminates at Clifton, near Brighouse in West Yorkshire. It was built between 1964 and 1976.

Safety on the M62 has historically been a concern, with the road having a higher than average number of fatalities and serious injuries. In 2004, the Highways Agency set up a safety scheme on the M62 known as Operation Edgeware, which resulted in a reduction of fatalities and serious injury accidents by around 50%.

In recent years the M62 has seen several improvements in safety, including the introduction of dedicated hard shoulder running systems and an Automated Incident Detection System. In the 2016/17 financial year statistics indicate that the road saw a total of 408 accidents resulting in personal injury, of which 43 resulted in fatalities.

The history of the M62

The first part of the M62 to be built was the Stretford–Eccles Bypass, of which only 1 mile still exists as the rest is now the section between Junctions 7 to 13 of the M60. Construction started in 1957, and that part of the motorway opened in 1960.

Surveying for the Pennine section began in November 1961 and its route was decided on in July 1963. Construction between Windy Hill and Pole Moor was difficult due to hilly terrain, peat bogs, and harsh weather conditions.

•  Latest live A1 traffic news

The Lofthouse Interchange was the next section to be completed building took place between 1965 and 1967. Two contracts were agreed for the section between Lofthouse and Ferrybridge in 1972, and both were completed by 1974. Finally, during the construction of Ouse bridge engineers encountered many problems, which delayed the completion until May 1976.

Information: Very heavy congestion on M62 Eastbound at Junction 20 due to workforce on the road. Down to one lane out of four. Best to turn off and look for an alternative route.

WITHOUT a doubt. the people who the overhead gantry signs in the greater Manchester are the most incompetent lot of articles i have ever come across. Take W/E 15 17 OCT. I tried to get home from A627M from the ROYTON ROUNDABOUT. about midnight on 15/10/2021. i found the whole roundabout down to one lane the slip road entrance to the A627M was blocked off . AS USUAL no warnings of any sort of the SIGNS on THE MOTORWAY M62 EAST or anywhere else. LAST FRIDAY 22/2021 IT GOT WORST driving from J17 WHITEFIELD TO J20 EAST i went of the M62 to the roundabout expecting to travel along the A 627M TO OLDHAM i found the entrance to the A627M OLDHAM was blocked off. not one warning sign on the M60 OR M62 EAST. it got worse on my way home from ROYTON i found the entrance to the A627M TOWARDS J20 WEST blocked off. it was about midnight. So PICKED UP THE M62 WEST AT HEYWOOD. on my way home to J17 at WHITEFIELD. guest what J17 SLIP ROAD WAS CLOSED. not one warning sign was lit up i was trying to get home to WHITEFIELD. The people of PRESTWITCH AND WHITEFIELD has suffer 6 years of misery while these motorways were turned into smart motorways. it is still going on. some of it was caused by the people giving out the info of the motorway closures . they caused chaos with misleading information caused accidents when they put out warning signs -motorways closed when they were open. motorways open A ND when motorways open when they were closed. Take J17 M60 EAST/WEST it has been the most shut down than any other part of the whole motorway system most cases no warning signs on these clever brightly lit matrix information. EVEN now i travel the M60/M62 EAST WEST and what do i see. warnings signs lit up telling people of roadworks ahead on M1 M6 hundreds of miles away from my area when they can not even tell us what is happening in the local area. a few weeks ago i went east from J17 TO J20 about 9pm as i past J18 the overhead gantries were lit up warning drivers to slow down, as there were 3 lanes closed it showed 3 lanes with red crosses on eveybody slowed down. a queue formed. A couple of miles down the road the 3 lanes were never shut down. The bloody warning signs had been left on from an earlier incident do you see what i am getting at ANYHOW whose bothered hundreds of millions of pounds has been spent on these motorways. it is only taxpayers money no one regulates how it is spent. if these things keep happening it does not matter there is plenty more money where thay comes from/

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M62

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M62 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M62 will be reinstated shortly.

If the images are not updating, please check back later.

M62 residents hit with travel disruption after two separate incidents

  • Tuesday 31 January 2023 at 1:38pm

travel advice m62

Drivers in Merseyside and Cheshire are facing travel chaos as a slew of incidents have impacted the M62 eastbound.

The motorway has been affected by two separate incidents overnight resulting in the eastbound carriageway being closed:

Between junction 7 and junction 8

At junction 10 at the Croft Interchange with the M6

National Highways staff are currently resurfacing several lanes and repairing safety barriers along the eastbound M62 between junction 7 and 8 following a lorry fire.

This work is unlikely to be completed before mid-afternoon on Tuesday 31 January.

A signed diversion from junction 7 remains in place, drivers heading eastbound beyond the area are advised to seek alternative motorway routes.

A police investigation into the second incident at junction 10 is continuing.

Two lorries collided at around 4.30 am resulting in a second fire. Resurfacing and safety barrier repairs are also likely needed with the potential for the eastbound carriageway to be closed through the evening rush hour.

A man died following the crash. It is believed the second driver did not suffer any injuries and is helping police with their enquiries.

Due to the location of the incident at junction 10, drivers on the eastbound M62 are still able to join the northbound and southbound M6.

Motorists leaving the northbound and southbound M6 are also able to join the eastbound and westbound M62 but there is likely to be heavy traffic.

Advice remains to check before you travel.

Traffic is seen at a standstill on the M62 motorway near Kirklees, West Yorkshire, due to heavy snowfall.

UK weather: Storm Larisa batters country with motorists stranded overnight

Met Office issues three amber warnings with significant disruption to transport and power expected

Storm Larisa battered parts of the UK, with gales and blizzards causing widespread travel disruption and the closure of hundreds of schools.

Motorists on the M62 were stranded overnight with mountain rescue teams coming to the aid of some drivers.

On the rail network there were widespread cancellations of commuter trains between Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, York and Liverpool because of the weather. Trains were suspended between Manchester and Sheffield because of a fallen tree.

At airports there were numerous flight delays and cancellations with runways closed to clear the snow.

The Met Office had issued a number of amber weather warnings predicting the blizzards and heavy snow. Those have now passed and the snow will clear but a number of yellow warnings about hazardous icy conditions remain in place across Wales, Northern Ireland , the Midlands and north of England. In the north and west of Scotland a warning of snow and ice is in place until 9am on Saturday.

The Met Office anticipates a return to colder conditions late next Monday and early on Tuesday.

Conditions on the M62 between Manchester and Leeds were particularly difficult with the chaos made worse by the actions of drivers, police said.

National Highways, the government-owned organisation that oversees England’s motorways and major A roads, indicated too many drivers ignored weather warnings.

The operational control director, Andrew Page-Dove, told PA Media: “I think the volume of the traffic speaks for itself, particularly this morning. The M62 was queued back to Manchester.”

He added that some drivers ignored closed lane signs, which resulted in them getting stuck and the situation becoming “exacerbated”.

A number of vehicles heading east over the Pennines were stranded overnight by heavy snow. At one point congestion between Rochdale and Saddleworth stretched for 8 miles with mountain rescue teams coming to the aid of some.

Richard McCarthy, a video journalist, was travelling from Manchester after covering Manchester United’s Europa League match on Thursday night. “I saw lots of abandoned sports cars, one Jaguar left on the road with a shovel stuck in the ground next to it and no driver,” he said. “There were lots of lorries losing momentum and getting stuck.”

Emma Hamilton, who works for the NHS and is from Yorkshire, said she had been stuck for 8 hours travelling from Manchester.

“There’s lorries broken down all over the road across all lanes. Drivers are having to work out themselves how to go round them. Sort of bobbing and weaving round them. It honestly feels neverending at this point,” she said.

Heavy snow hits Britain and Ireland – video

Greater Manchester police said ploughing and gritting on the motorway was “severely delayed” by motorists illegally using the hard shoulder and closed lanes. The RAC said the situation was made worse by drivers overtaking other vehicles and getting stuck in fresh snow.

In Staffordshire the army was helping police, ambulance and fire services to rescue drivers stuck in deep snow on the A53 and the A523 near Leek.

The assistant chief constable Rebecca Riggs urged the public not to make any journeys unless absolutely necessary. “Road conditions in some areas pose a serious safety risk and increasing snowfall is making visibility a major issue.”

after newsletter promotion

The train operator Merseyrail said its services would not start until 10am and TransPennine Express and Northern said they were cancelling a number of services because of the severe weather.

Northern said its problems included train crew not being able to get to work at Buxton and no service between New Mills in Derbyshire and Sheffield because of trees on the line.

East Midlands airport closed its runway for about three hours from 5am because of heavy overnight snowfall.

Flights were delayed at Birmingham airport after its runway was closed for an hour to clear it of heavy snow. It warned of further delays as ground crews de-iced the backup aircraft.

At John Lennon airport in Liverpool most flights were delayed because of the weather and there were also delays and cancellations at Bristol airport and Leeds Bradford.

There were widespread school closures because of the snow. More than 200 were shut in Wales and over 100 in Northern Ireland. There were numerous closures in South, North and West Yorkshire, the east and West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire and County Durham.

The filming of the ITV soap opera Emmerdale was cancelled on Friday due to the heavy snowfall. The show’s set is on the Harewood estate in West Yorkshire.

The Met Office said the deepest snow from its observation sites was 27cm (10.6 in) at Capel Curig in Gwynedd. There was 16cm at Lake Vyrnwy in Powys, and 14cm at Bingley in West Yorkshire and the same at Altnaharra in the Highlands.

Buxton Weather Watch responded to the Met Office tweet by saying Harpur Hill, a village on the edge of Buxton, had snow at least 30cm deep.

The Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said Storm Larisa, named by the French weather service, was responsible for bringing rain and snow to the UK.

The weather is expected to clear by the end of Friday, before being replaced by another low pressure system, leading to a further yellow snow and ice warning for much of northern England and Scotland from 3pm on Saturday to 6am on Sunday.
