Southern Spectacular (10 Days)

Overall an excellent tour. But it was surprising and disappointing that in some of the hotels, the shower was in the bath.

Southern Spotlight (9 Days) Tour

Southern Spotlight (9 Days)

Isobel was an outstanding tour guide, full of amazing and interesting information, funny, down to earth, a wonderful story teller, competent, organised, nice to everyone. We've done two other Trafalgar bus tours and she has been our favourite tour guide. Darrell was a superb bus driver, always calm, navigating different terrains and weather with ease. We felt 100% safe in his competent hands. I liked that so much of the good stuff was included in the tour, e.g. the cruise on Milford Sound, and the wonderful ferry ride and dinner on the farm in Queenstown. It was fast paced, but we did cover an incredible amount in 8 days.

5 Day Southern Circuit Experience Tour

5 Day Southern Circuit Experience

The staff who helped book our tour were truly wonderful, and provided a high level of communication. Unfortunately our trip was interrupted by rock slides and bad weather (completely out of their control). Aside from that, it was great! Important to note, this trip requires many days straight of travel to see all the sites. If you can make it work, I would recommend taking longer than 5 days to try to fit it all in, for a more leisurely trip.

10 Day South Island National Parks

Overall a very good experience. Staff responded very quickly to any query or difficulty

Northern Spotlight (8 Days) Tour

Northern Spotlight (8 Days)

All excellent - loved Dexter and John - until the last day. Too much driving that day, lunch hour was rushed, and then the Wellington Travelodge wasn’t a good choice. Lots of mistakes checking in - someone was already in the room they gave us! And the elevators could not service the number of people staying there - made us worried about getting out in an emergency. One of our friends also got locked behind a fire door after using the bathroom on the 6th floor! We had to go search for her and could barely hear her calling behind the fire door. Bay of Islands and Rotorua were terrific - the latter dinner and culture show in particular were compelling. And we enjoyed the variety of people on the tour.

New Zealand Vista (14 Days) Tour

New Zealand Vista (14 Days)

New Zealand is a land with many places to see. It is a place rich in sites and in history, owing to the fact that two separate cultures have occupied the space. Fortunately our tour director and guide Chantavee was excellent at explaining both the history and providing context to the sites. I did not lower my reading due to the fact that the bus ride just sucked; it was a necessary part of the overall experience.

5 Day Alpine Explorer Tour

5 Day Alpine Explorer

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. The accommodation and travel was all very well planned. We truly couldn't be happier. South Island is a treat to the eyes and we got to visit all the main cities in a short time. Thank you TourRadar for making this possible for us.

Northern Wonders (8 Days) Tour

6 Day Northern Best Bits Tour

6 Day Northern Best Bits

Met expectations. We stayed a few extra days and we were delighted that they still gave us a ride to the airport at the later date.

8 Day Discover Middle Earth Tour

8 Day Discover Middle Earth

overall, this was an outstanding tour! amanda, our tour representative, had everything perfectly organized. there was one day we had a snag on the bus from Rotorua to Wellington, but it was not the fault of Tourradar, but more with the staff at the Rororua bus station. but all of the activities and sights were first rare!

Trains, Fiords and Glaciers Tour

Trains, Fiords and Glaciers

Two legs of the trip was on Intercity buses, which meant there was no stopping at any of the wonderful sites mentioned in the itinerary. That said - every pickup and hotel stay went flawlessly. And the drivers who drove the vans were wonderful.

11 Day New Zealand\'s Finest Tour

11 Day New Zealand's Finest

All tours and transfers were meticulously planned. Drivers and tour guides were knowledgeable and provided informative commentary. Staff in the hotels were welcoming and friendly, we were given an upgrade at the Millennium Rotorua. Overall, we had a fabulous time in New Zealand, covered a lot of ground in a short timescale and wouldn’t have been able to do that without such a great itinerary planned by Thrifty tours. Kia ora.

New Zealand Coach / Bus Tour Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed my tour. The guide, Isobel, paid very good attention to details and the comfort of her tourists.I felt safe and secure in the bus as Mark's driving was very competent and Isobel was delightful, patient and full of fun, a real people person. She and Mark worked well together, meal times, departure times and other important information was provided well in advance. Good provision was made for frequent stops to allow for toilet breaks and the purchase of refreshments. I liked their attention to time keeping. For me, everything worked smoothly which made the tour relaxed and stress free. I would highly recommend Isobel and Mark.

However, with so many coach tours in New Zealand to choose from it can be pretty overwhelming to make a choice! We’ll compare all the top New Zealand coach tours right here in this guide.

There are coach tours suited to young backpackers, families, adventure-seekers and the older crowd. We compare as wide a range of New Zealand coach tours as possible to help you find the right coach tour for you.

If you want to learn more about how the coaches work in New Zealand, take a look at our guide to the Bus Networks in New Zealand . Plus, don’t forget to bookmark Travel by Bus in New Zealand: The Ultimate Guide for even more tips.

5 Things to Compare Between the New Zealand Coach Tours

We believe that there is no best coach company, as we are all looking for different travel experiences. However, it’s almost impossible to not have a blast on every single one of these coach tours. To help you make the best decision for yourself, here are a few tips!

1. Compare the Type of Coach Tour

Are you a fully independent traveller that wants a cheap way to travel ? Choose a coach network. Do you want some flexibility to leave the tour to make the most of an extended trip in New Zealand or a working holiday ? Choose a hop-on hop-off bus. Or do you want an experience with the least organising to do as possible and just want to make the most of your limited time in New Zealand? Choose an all-inclusive coach tour!

2. Compare the Activities and Accommodation

You’ll get the best value for money if the tour includes activities that you want to do or at least gives you the option. If accommodation is important to you, then compare accommodation, as some will be in tents, hostels, 3-star hotels, 4-star hotels, cabins or something else. Is there a chance to upgrade to a private room if you want to and at what price?

3. Compare What the Passengers are Like

Taking a New Zealand coach tour is a social experience and you’re bound to meet some amazing people! People often make (or break) the experience. Some coach tours are catered to 18-35-year-olds, while others are more suitable for the 50+, others cater to families and mature couples… Take a look at the comparison below where we compare coach passengers as much as possible.

4. Compare the Destinations Visited

Does the coach company visit the New Zealand locations on your bucket list? Remember, even if they don’t stay the night in every destination around New Zealand, it’s likely that they will pass through giving you enough time to at least quickly visit the place. All the destinations in the comparison below are where the coaches stay overnight.

5. Compare Prices

Budgeting is an important part of the holiday process! With all the inclusions taken into consideration, is the price worth it? A trick we like to do is to divide the price by the number of minimum travel days on a bus pass the result will give you a better idea of how much you are paying for the bus pass and its inclusions per day.

Before we begin, make sure that you understand the different types of coach tours in New Zealand by checking out our guide, What is the Difference Between the Buses in New Zealand?

Haere Mai and Welcome to Aotearoa/New Zealand. The first stop on your adventure is Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand. Often referred to as the ‘City of Sails’ by locals, Auckland is home to 2 harbours and over 44 volcanoes!

On arrival in the city, make your way to the Nesuto Stadium Hotel where you can check in and drop your bags. At the hotel reception, you’ll receive a welcome letter with some tour information, and this evening you’ll meet your group and welcome host at 6:15pm and head for a delicious welcome dinner at 6:30pm.

Arrival: Anytime

Day 2: Auckland to Rotorua

This morning we’ll be leaving Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and making our way to Waitomo, famous for its enchanting glowworm caves. We’ll be visiting the brightest glowworm cave in Waitomo, which was even visited by Sir David Attenborough! You’ll take a spectacular boat ride through a cave lit entirely by glowworms and experience the magical sight of hundreds of glowworms shining just for you. We'll follow this with a walking tour of another amazing limestone cave shaped over millions of years.

Afterward, we’ll continue down to Rotorua, the geothermal wonderland of New Zealand. This evening we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner together and then settle in for a luxurious night’s sleep in Rotorua.

Visit:  Waitomo, Rotorua

Activity: Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Accommodation: Distinction Rotorua (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 3: Free Day in Rotorua

This morning we’ll skirt around the edge of Lake Rotorua to a lookout point where we’ll have a view of the infamous Mount Tarawera, once the home of the renowned pink and white terraces before a violent eruption destroyed them. We’ll end with a visit to the Buried Village, New Zealand's most visited Archaeological Site, where we’ll learn about the famous 1886 eruption and visit the site of the now-buried Te Wairoa village.

This afternoon we’ll go for a walk in the Whakarewarewa forest where we’ll see towering Redwoods, magnificent Douglas firs, and New Zealand’s native Silver fern and then you have some free time to explore Rotorua on your own. If you’d like to see some geothermal activity for free, we recommend taking a walk around Kuirau Park to see boiling mud pools and steaming lakes. Go for a walk to the lake's edge and through the government gardens, spend some time relaxing at the Polynesian Spa, or take the Gondola up to see the amazing Rotorua Skyline.

Your experience will begin with a guided tour of the sacred Maori rock carvings and then you’ll travel to the Lodge to witness the preparation of a traditional ground cooked hangi. Amazing Way to Travel

Had the best month travelling New Zealand on the Kiwi bus. The drivers were really helpful and gave great advice when it came to activities and what there is to see at each location. The activities on offer were all really great and even better that we received a discount for being on the Kiwi bus. Its a really sociable way of travelling which really adds to the whole experience and I have made some amazing memories with great people. — Alicia (UK)

Good Fun, Different Experience!

I was really happy that I hadn't had to look up activities up by myself and Kiwi Experience always gave us good discounts. — Jelena (Germany)

Absolutely Amazing

I bought my kiwi tour tentatively as I was nervous about travelling on my own, it turns out it was the best thing I could do. The drivers are informative and fun, you meet people from all over the world and you see one of the most beautiful countries imaginable. — Joey (UK)

Fantastic Experience and Life-Long Friends

This was one the best experiences of my life. You'll meet so many people and make some friends for life... No one has a bad attitude and most are solo travellers. — Ronnie (USA)

Most Amazing Trip of My Life

The whole time in bus were just as fun as when we were visiting those attractions, we were so lucky to have Ben as our driver, we sing, laugh and joke all the time. Overall, I can’t explain it in details but you have to go on a trip with Kiwi Experience to truly understand how extraordinary it is. — Greyson (Singapore)

auckland sky tower new zealand coach tours

Experience the best of Auckland’s city highlights with a half-day scenic tour, followed by a trip up the famous Auckland Sky Tower.

Firstly, travel around the city centre. Next, take a trip over the Auckland Harbour Bridge, with its stunning views of the harbour and city skyline. Visit the Viaduct Harbour and Auckland’s famous Queen Street, and enjoy the lush grounds of the Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park.

Pause for morning tea (own expense) in charming Parnell Village. This historic suburb has been transformed into a unique boutique shopping experience. After that, the tour continues along the waterfront to the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park, named after a much-respected Prime Minister of New Zealand. With panoramic views of the harbour and beautiful formal gardens, it’s a great spot to take photos.

After a scenic trip back along Tamaki Drive to the city, arrive at Auckland’s Sky Tower. This is the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand at 328 metres high. Prepare yourself for breathtaking 360 degree views from the observation deck of this Auckland landmark. On a clear day you’ll be able to gaze as far as 80 kilometres (50 miles) in all directions. Day 3 Rotorua

hobbiton movie set new zealand coach tours

Explore the central North Island on a day trip from Auckland to Rotorua . Along the way, take in guided tours of both the Hobbiton Movie Set and Waitomo Caves.

Setting off from Auckland, travel through the lush farmland of the Waikato and King Country regions. During the journey, enjoy your driver guide’s entertaining and informative commentary.

Take a guided tour of the famous Hobbiton Movie Set, located inside a picturesque 1,250 acre sheep and beef farm near Matamata. Here, the village of Hobbiton was carefully created in amazing detail as a film location for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movie trilogies.

During your guided tour of this amazing location you’ll see sights like Hobbit holes, the Mill and the Green Dragon Inn. In addition, you will learn how farmland was transformed into a living, breathing piece of Middle-Earth. After exploring Hobbiton, tuck into a delicious lunch at the Green Dragon Inn.

At the world famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, take a 45 minute guided tour through impressive underground caverns and learn how stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone structures were formed over millions of years. Your tour includes a boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto – glide silently along an underground river as you gaze at the twinkling glowworms overhead.

After visiting Hobbiton and Waitomo, continue to Rotorua, arriving in the early evening.

Stay 2 nights in Rotorua.

Day 4 Rotorua

tranzalpine train New Zealand coach tours

Board the TranzAlpine Train today for an unforgettable alpine journey. Pass through the fields of the Canturbury Plains, a landscape of picturesque farmland, before entering the mountains. From your carriage you’ll see lush beech rainforest, the spectacular Southern Alps, and the gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. All carriages include both one-way seating and tabled group seating, allowing you to experience the amazing views while enjoying the company of other passengers on-board. An open air viewing carriage allows you to get even closer to the stunning scenery. The trip is 223.8 kilometres long and takes just 4.5 hours. There are 16 tunnels and 5 viaducts, the highest being the ‘Staircase’ standing at 73 metres.

When you arrive in Greymouth, your bus connection will take you south to Hokitika , a small town famous for its arts and crafts. The West Coast still has a “Wild West” atmosphere, with fiercely independent locals and vast wilderness surrounding the small settlements.

Stay 1 night in Hokitika.

Day 8 Franz Josef

Continue your journey south today as your coach takes you along the West Coast to Franz Josef , home of New Zealand’s most famous glaciers.

While in Franz Josef you may wish to soak in the Glacier Hot Pools, nestled in lush rainforest in a haven of natural tranquility. You can walk to the terminal face of Franz Josef Glacier to take a look at the ice, or enjoy one of the local walks. In Franz Josef township you have the chance to see New Zealand’s rarest kiwi at the West Coast Wildlife Centre, a unique and interactive experience that brings together nature, conservation, and wildlife all under one roof.

Stay 2 nights in Franz Josef.

Day 9 Franz Josef

franz josef glacier walk

If you like adventure, today you will get a chance to explore the spectacular Franz Josef Glacier on a heli-hike . Take a short helicopter ride up to the Pinnacles area of Franz Josef Glacier, where you will explore a world of towering ice formations and shimmering blue caves. Afterwards, soak in the Glacier Hot Pools to warm up after a fantastic day on the ice.

If you would rather sit back and enjoy the views, you will experience the best of the Southern Alps on the Grand Tour helicopter flight , which encompasses Franz Josef Glacier, Fox Glacier, and Mt Cook (New Zealand’s highest mountain). Top off the flight with a snow landing!

Day 10 Queenstown

Take a sightseeing day tour from Franz Josef to Queenstown and discover the beauty of Haast Pass Highway. Leaving Franz Josef, travel by luxury coach through the stunning scenery of the South Island. Your driver guide will provide entertaining commentary and point out sites of interest as you pass the ruggedly beautiful West Coast landscape of vast rainforests, gushing waterfalls and snow-capped mountains.

You’ll travel through the Haast Pass, journeying through native beech forest and over the Southern Alps, before emerging in the Queenstown-Lakes region. Enjoy a morning tea break in Makarora on the border of Mount Aspiring World Heritage Park. You’ll pass by the crystal clear waters of Lake Hawea, Lake Wanaka, and Lake Dunstan before arriving in Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand.

Stay 5 nights in Queenstown.

Day 11 Queenstown

jet boat queenstown

Venture deep into the heart of the world-renowned Mount Aspiring National Park today on the Dart River Jet Wilderness Safari ! The sheer diversity of what’s on offer means you experience a unique combination of breathtaking scenery matched with exciting jet boating on braided, glacier fed rivers. Highly informative guides add the personal touch, revealing fascinating stories about the area’s history, the Greenstone trail, and the local Maori legends. Walk amongst ancient beech forest unchanged for 80 million years and view the scenic backgrounds for many Lord of the Rings scenes on your authentic New Zealand experience in an untouched world.

Day 12 Queenstown

Today you might like to catch a bus to Arrowtown. You’ll be enchanted by historic Arrowtown, a New Zealand treasure located 20 minutes from Queenstown. Arrowtown is charming and quirky – a delightful gold rush village nestled below the beautiful peaks that surround the sparkling Arrow River. The heart of its history is Buckingham Street, a procession of heritage buildings that stretches into a tree-lined avenue of tiny miner’s cottages. The buildings in this lovely precinct house shops, galleries, bars, and restaurants – many classy, most individual, and not one from an international chain.

Relax and explore Queenstown in the afternoon, with the option to add on a 4WD tour of Skippers Canyon , a thrilling skydive , or a Central Otago wine tour .
