Nissan R32 GT-R Looks Surprisingly Cool As A Safari Vehicle
Adam LZ's latest project is a heavily modified R32 that you can drive flat out on dirt roads without worrying about the consequences
by Thanos Pappas
Older generations of the Nissan GT-R are becoming increasingly popular in the used car market but that didn’t stop YouTuber Adam LZ from using an R32 for his latest project. The Japanese model received a custom suspension, off-road goodies, and a modified powertrain, transforming into a “Safari GTR”.
Everything started from the neglected shell of a JDM-spec donor vehicle that came without an engine, making it a great candidate for unconventional mods. The process allegedly took less than 3 weeks, which is surprisingly fast for the amount of work required for a conversion like this. The resulting vehicle is similar in style to Nissan’s own Safari Rally Z Tribute , and will probably go further on dirt roads than any other GT-R has ever been.

The highlight of the Safari GTR is the notable increase in ground clearance compared to the stock R32. This is mostly attributed to a custom long travel suspension which is more resilient in absorbing bumps. The Nitto Nomad Grappler tires (215/65R17) wrapped around the 17-inch wheels are also crucial for improving traction on slippery surfaces and making the R32 more comfortable when driving off the beaten track .
Due to the lack of roof rails, the Nismo-branded roof rack with integrated lights had to be permanently cut into the roof of the R32, which is a small price to pay for the extra practicality and the safari looks. The front bumper is protected by a custom bash bar with extra LEDs, while the rest of the bodywork is largely unchanged. The Supergloss Olive Green wrap makes the R32 look fresh and ready for adventure, with the WRX mud flaps adding to the rally-spec charisma.
Last but not least, the RB26 powertrain has been upgraded with a Garrett GTX3576 Gen 2 turbocharger, a tweaked ECU by Monster Performance, a PWR intercooler, and more parts, resulting in an output 500 hp (368 kW / 507 PS) measured at the wheels. Furthermore, the selectable 4WD system means you can have some RWD fun when you don’t need all-wheel-drive traction.
Adam LZ didn’t waste any time and took his Safari GTR to the test, driving it flat out on dirt roads and enjoying the benefits of the lifted suspension. The next step is to add an even longer travel suspension, improve the brakes, and maybe add a snorkel which would allow the engine to breathe when driving through big puddles. Overall, it seems that the modified R32 will be enjoyed to the fullest, justifying the cost of the modifications .

Venture Off-Road In This Modified Nissan Safari
The Nissan Safari was a hardy 4x4 from the factory, but this example now has even greater off-road prowess.
There’s a beautiful honesty to rugged trucks, with form following all-terrain function. Land Rover has the Defender, Mitsubishi its Shogun/Montero, and then there’s Jeep. For Nissan, the Patrol was the 4x4 capable of getting the family home regardless of road conditions. This fourth generation Patrol, – or Safari as it was known in Japan – is an import worth taking note of.
J Spec Auto specialize in Japanese imports, with this modified 1991 Nissan Safari one of its latest offerings. The Safari was a capable machine from the factory with this Y60 model’s suspension developed to cope with rough off-road routes. Good ground clearance, short overhangs, and a reliable motor further boosted its credentials. However, for some enthusiasts that wasn’t enough.

This Nissan Safari has been modified with new heavy-duty suspension, its bright blue Ganlock springs on display along with Pro Comp shock absorbers. Enormous tyres are shrouded by wheel arch extensions, and the overall increase in height means that those sidesteps serve a genuine purpose.
Under the hood is the larger TB42 167-horsepower 4.2-liter petrol engine that’s paired with an automatic transmission, providing 240lb ft of torque is at its driver’s disposal, and is sent to all four wheels to maximise traction.
Considering that this 4x4 has been built with off-roading in mind, the exterior appears totally unmarked. It’s the same story for the cabin where its plush fabric seats look hardly used. It simplistic and durable dashboard and switchgear has stood up to the test of time, today serving as a throwback to the 1990s. The only interior modification is a small screen and a DVD player, giving passengers some light entertainment on lengthy journeys.
This car has been officially imported through all of the correct channels, and comes with its relevant paperwork. It currently has a legal Virginia State Title, but the advert does note that you should check the strict California import laws if that’s where you wish to drive it.
The odometer reads just over 30,000 kilometres, however, the description suggests that this Nissan has actually covered the equivalent of 180,000 miles. It appears to have been well maintained, and so there’s likely plenty of life left in this model known for its bulletproof reliability.
J Spec Auto currently has this Safari upon for sale at $15,995.

Nissan Safari Rally Z Tribute brings rallying heritage to life at 2023 SEMA show
October 30, 2023
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan pays homage to its motorsports heritage with the Safari Rally Z Tribute 1 built by Tommy Pike Customs and a replica Datsun 240Z Safari rally car at this year's SEMA show.
Celebrating a multi-decade legacy of rallying successes, the showcase vehicles will appear alongside other Nissan concepts and production models in the Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall, booth #52141 , at the 2023 SEMA show, Oct. 31-Nov. 3.
With the seventh-generation Nissan Z winning fans on both road and race track , the Safari Rally Z Tribute imagines how the sports car could translate that exhilaration to adventures beyond the pavement. The styling of the car also pays homage to the Datsun 240Z rally car that won the 1971 East African Safari Rally .
Leaning into the trend for rugged, go-anywhere "safari" builds, Tommy Pike and his South Carolina-based team raised and toughened the car's suspension, adding commensurate lighting, durability and performance enhancements to ready the asphalt-oriented Z for the dusty world of rallying.
Custom KW Safari suspension and NISMO suspension parts raise the coupe's ride height by 2 inches, helping accommodate 17 x 7.5-inch prototype NISMO Safari wheels shod in dirt-ready Yokohama GEOLANDAR M/T G003 tires.
Protecting vital powertrain and chassis components are a new front bumper guard and skid plate, while an assortment of NISMO Off Road LED lights deliver additional illumination for dusty conditions or night racing. Key interior enhancements include a custom roll bar with 4-point harnesses and custom-trimmed Recaro Pole Position seats.
For further powertrain enhancements, the Safari Rally Z Tribute features an AMS-tuned, 400+ horsepower, VR30DDTT engine combined with a NISMO Track cat-back exhaust system, cold air intake, carbon fiber engine cover, coolant expansion tank, heat exchanger, and street twin-disc clutch and flywheel. Find full details on the vehicle's specifications in the complete build sheet .
Rally victories
No recounting of Nissan racing heritage is complete without noting the success of driver Edgar Herrmann and navigator Hans Schüller, who placed first over the 3,800-mile 1971 East African Safari Rally in the #11 Datsun 240Z race car . It's a milestone for the company that the new, twin-turbo Safari Z Tribute is intended to celebrate.
Notably, the 240Z victory marked the second consecutive win for a Datsun racer, with a Datsun Bluebird 1600SSS scoring the overall win in the grueling off-road contest's 18th year, 1970.
Bringing this racing heritage to life for SEMA attendees, Nissan is showcasing a vintage replica of the rally-winning 240Z, offering a side-by-side look at the through-line of the company's racing and sports car legacies.
On loan from collector Randy Jaffe, the car was restored in 2013 to drivable, period-correct condition. Eagle-eyed fans will recognize the vehicle from the recent Nissan commercial, "60 Years in 30 Seconds," with star Brie Larson piloting numerous heritage Nissan and Datsun vehicles.
Seiko Safari Z watch
Nissan is also building on the Z showcase at SEMA to introduce a limited-edition Seiko Safari Z watch that pays homage to the Seiko sponsorship graphics on the original race-winning 240Z rally car.
The watch is limited to just 240 pieces, with "Safari" and "Z" branding plus a Nissan "23" race number on its face. Each watch will be individually numbered on the caseback. Watches will be available beginning Oct. 31 at nismosafariwatch.orderpromos.com .

Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022: upgrades announced for the off-road stalwart
It was tough before, but now the uae favourite has had a series of enhancements that have taken it to the next level.
The new upgraded 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari. All photos: Nissan
Never one to let the blowing dust settle around the wheels of its most popular vehicles, Nissan has announced a series of upgrades and adjustments for the 2022 Super Safari, the most hardcore of the Patrol breed .
This offshoot of the UAE’s most popular car is easily distinguishable from the standard version, standing higher and looking just a little bit more high-spirited.
The latest Super Safari comes with a 4.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower and 451Nm of torque. You can get the car in a five-speed automatic or manual transmission version.
The 2022 car has greater ground clearance, allowing it to tackle harsh gradients with more ease. It also has a heavy-duty coil spring suspension, with telescopic shock absorbers and a torsion bar, which should make the ride smoother.
In addition to the usual electronic power steering, the Super Safari is also equipped with a range of Nissan’s intelligent mobility features.
These include cruise control, tyre-pressure monitoring, anti-lock braking, airbags, and a system that prevents understeer and oversteer by reducing engine speed and applying the brakes individually on specific wheels when entering or exiting a corner. Not a feature those into drifting would approve of.
Inside, drivers can opt to have the seats and cabin decked out in PVC, fabric, or tan leather, with the latter being adorned with a special Super Safari emboss.
The new vehicle now comes in three colours — black, white, or gold — with a choice of grey or gold flourishes across the roof, front and rear bumpers, wheel arches and spare tyre cover. That is all set off, of course, with the bold Super Safari decal along the side, just to drive the point home.
The Patrol is now in its 70th year of production , with a special edition being unveiled at Expo 2020 . The Super Safari, introduced in 2016, is a trim line specific to the Middle East.
The 2022 Patrol Super Safari is now available in the UAE at Al Masaood Automobiles in Abu Dhabi and Arabian Automobiles in Dubai. It has a starting price of Dh153,000 ($41,654).

A large 90 per cent of its buyers were male customers whilst 10 per cent were female as reported by the company.
The 2022 Nissan Patrol Safari continues the rich heritage of the Nissan brand in the region and showcases the Patrol’s undisputed standing in the UAE’s automotive culture. It comes as no surprise that a growing number of women drivers are gravitating towards this model, as they, like their male counterparts, invest more in and value its class-leading power.
The 2022 Nissan Patrol Safari picks up where the previous models had left off. It builds on the SUV’s immense popularity amongst car owners in the UAE and the region who are after powerful vehicle performance designed for off-roading adventures.

Customers mainly gravitated towards the black and twilight grey colour combination in 2021– accounting for 49 per cent of the Nissan Patrol Super Safari sales during the period. However, the radiance of the white hue proved to be a great driver of customer demand in 2022. During the first quarter of this year, the white Patrol Super Safari units constituted 52 per cent of the total sales.
As for its interior, the new model sports luxurious leather seats with a special Super Safari emboss that adds a unique touch to the model’s overall appeal. It also includes a display audio system with smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and a wireless charger for added comfort and convenience. Its advanced technologies are amongst the highlights of the Patrol Super Safari, reflecting Nissan’s commitment to building vehicles with outstanding features that can level up the overall experience of its customers whilst on the road.

LATEST NEWS 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari elevates off-road experiences in the Middle East
March 14, 2022
- Aesthetic and technological upgrades complement visual identity and luxury of the legendary SUV
Dubai, UAE (14 March 2022) – Building on the success of the legendary Patrol Super Safari, Nissan announces aesthetic and technological upgrades for the 2022 model to cater to the evolving needs of buyers in the region. Conquering the harshest of terrain for almost seventy years, the Patrol has built a legacy in the Middle East, composed of a deep-rooted heritage, power, and superior off-road capability.
The rugged appeal of the Patrol Super Safari is available with a choice of three bold exterior colours – black, white, or gold – with a unique choice of grey or gold accents across the roof, bumpers, wheel arches, and spare tyre cover for drivers to create a combination of their choice. The striking ‘Super Safari’ decal along the side of the car is complemented by a bold set of 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels that contribute to the SUV’s head-turning presence.
Inside, drivers can opt to have the cabin with PVC, woven fabric, or tan leather seats, with the latter adding a unique touch through a special Super Safari emboss. In addition to 2 DIN display audio system with smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay, drivers also benefit from a newly installed wireless charger for added comfort and convenience.
Thierry Sabbagh, Managing Director, Nissan Middle East said: “The region’s sustained love and demand for the Patrol Super Safari is reflective of the deep-rooted heritage of this all-terrain vehicle with the people of the Middle East and its compatibility with the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. The 2022 model retains the Super Safari’s off-road prowess, offering customers in the Middle East value and convenience through the integration of innovative design and technological elements.”
Thrilling performance is provided by a 4.8-liter in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower and 451 Nm of torque. Equipped with VTC and NICS, in addition to a 5-speed automatic or manual transmission, the Patrol Super Safari offers exceptional off-road performance and impressive top speed on the highway. A straight-line drive transfer and rear differential lock further the Patrol’s performance and allow it to explore places where other SUVs don’t dare to go.
Built for adventure, the Patrol Super Safari’s higher angle of stability, improved gradeability, and the larger approach, departure, and ramp-clearance angles, are all furthered by a heavy-duty coil spring suspension, incorporating telescopic shock absorbers and torsion bar, for confident handling on all terrain.
In addition to electronically controlled power steering that ensures effortless control at low speeds and firm handling at high speeds, the Patrol Super Safari is equipped with a host of Nissan Intelligent Mobility features for a safer and more connected driving experience. This includes cruise control, a tire pressure monitoring system, ABS, dual-front SRS airbags, and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) that prevents understeer and oversteer by reducing engine speed and applying the brakes individually on specific wheels when entering or exiting a corner.
The 2022 Patrol Super Safari is now available at Nissan’s partner network across the Middle East including, Al Masaood Automobiles in Abu Dhabi, YK AlMoayyed & Sons in Bahrain, Arabian Automobiles Co. in Dubai, Anwar Babel Co. in Iraq, Bustami & Saheb Co. in Jordan, Abdulmohsen Abdulaziz Al Babtain in Kuwait, Rasamny-Younis Motor Company (RYMCO) in Lebanon, Suhail Bahwan Automobiles in Oman, Saleh Al Hamad Al Mana Co. in Qatar, and Tehama Trading Co. in Yemen.

We were fairly surprised just how smooth the drive was and the silence in the cabin as the 4.8-litre, 280bhp V6 engine roared away was impressive. Choose between cloth, leather and PVC upholstery.
