Report card: How the UNC baseball team's season has gone so far

20240220_sharon_baseball-vs-elon-72.jpg

Following a series victory over Virginia Tech , the No. 12 UNC baseball team sits atop the ACC Coastal Division standings with a conference record of 17-7. At 33-11 overall,  the Tar Heels are slotted as the six seed and a regional host in Baseball America’s latest NCAA tournament projection .

Ahead of the final two ACC series in the coming weeks , here’s a look at North Carolina’s season to date. It's report card time.

North Carolina boasts the second highest team OPS and third highest team batting average in ACC conference play. It also has hit a league-leading 53 home runs in conference play . Six Tar Heels with at least 100 at-bats are are hitting over .300 on the season, four of whom have an OPS of over 1.000.

“[We have] guys up and down the lineup who can do damage,” said junior center fielder Vance Honeycutt after a game against Notre Dame in April. “There's really not a free guy to pitch to.”

Senior first baseman Parks Harber leads UNC with an OPS of 1.136 . In late March, he homered in five straight games, including a three-home run game in a series-clinching victory at Wake Forest. Eight of his 15 home runs  of the season came during that eight-day stretch.

Redshirt sophomore outfielder Casey Cook has been arguably the most consistent bat in the lineup. He’s hitting  .337 with an OPS of 1.036 and leads the team in RBIs with 58.

First-year infielder Gavin Gallaher leads the team in both batting average and on-base percentage, while Honeycutt has hit a team-best 16 homers.

The Tar Heels have a stellar defensive outfield. Graduate outfielder Anthony Donofrio has made several run-saving plays this season. Cook has a perfect fielding percentage , and Honeycutt covers tons of ground in center field, making highlight-reel catches.

“He’s a freak,” head coach Scott Forbes said of Honeycutt after a win over Virginia Tech. “I’ve never seen anything like it. His speed is unreal. And his defense is unreal.”

First-year catcher Luke Stevenson has been solid behind the dish,  only allowing 21 stolen bases on the season.

The only knock on the Tar Heels’ defensively are occasional errors. The team has committed  43 on the season — almost one per game . Senior shortstop Colby Wilkerson, who forms a tandem up the middle with graduate second baseman Alex Madera , has committed 14 errors — the most on the team.

Starting Pitching: B+

The starting rotation has fluctuated all season . In the absence of top arms like senior right-hander Jake Knapp and first-year southpaw Folger Boaz , others have stepped up.

Junior left-hander Shea Sprague has a 3.40 ERA in over 50  innings pitched and has walked only nine batters. Sprague’s best start of the season came against Georgia Tech when he threw eight brilliant innings, allowing only one earned run.

The other fixture in the rotation has been first-year righty Jason DeCaro . He owns a 3.86 ERA and leads the team in strikeouts and innings pitched . DeCaro allowed five runs in two of his last four starts, but the other two were scoreless gems. His best start was his most recent, throwing seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts against Virginia Tech on Friday .

“He’s a stud,” senior right-hander Matt Poston said of DeCaro on Sunday. “We know he’s gonna be able to go at least six [innings] for us most of the time. He helps us a lot.”

Bullpen: A-

The best arm for the Tar Heels out of the pen is redshirt sophomore lefty Dalton Pence. Pence has a 1.75 ERA and a team-best five saves . He’s a versatile and lethal weapon, often pitching more than one inning in an appearance and totaling 46 strikeouts on the season.

“We kinda know he’s gonna go get the job done most of the time,” Poston said . “We have a lot of trust in him. I think he could pitch 10 days in a row if he wanted to.”

But it’s not only Pence. Sophomore lefty Kyle Percival also boasts a sub-2.00 ERA , while senior right-hander Connor Bovair has a sub-3.00 ERA and a team-best 1.07 WHIP. Sophomore righty Matthew Matthijs leads all of Division I with 11 wins, and junior right-hander Aidan Haugh provides more versatility with his ability to both come on in relief and start games.

WSSU adds Week Zero game, announces North Carolina A&T tickets

WSSU football has exciting games lined up this fall, including a Week Zero matchup with Bluefield State and a rivalry game against North Carolina A&T.

' src=

Winston-Salem State (WSSU) football will play a Week Zero game for the first time this fall, and it has tickets for sale for the Sept. 7 game at North Carolina A&T.

WSSU will travel to CIAA foe Bluefield State for a Week Zero matchup on August 31. The game was announced by Etienne Thomas, WSSU Director of Athletics announced the game on Wednesday during an alumni town hall meeting. The two programs met last year as Bluefield State made its return to the CIAA in 2023. WSSU won that game 30-0 in Bowman Gray Stadium. Week Zero is a new concept for NCAA Division II schools. WSSU will then head to Greensboro on Sept. 7 where it will face long-time rival North Carolina A&T in Truist Stadium. Thomas announced that WSSU will have a ticket allotment of 350 tickets which it will sell at $50 each, allowing a maximum profit of $17,500 in addition to the guarantee from the FCS program. The tickets will first be made available to members of the school’s “1000 Horns” support group.

A&T WSSU

The game will mark the first matchup between the Triad’s two HBCU football programs since 2010. WSSU won that game 27-21 at what was then-known as Aggie Stadium, beating North Carolina A&T for the third time in fifth tries as the series resumed.

The following weekend, the Rams kick off their home opener on September 14th as Ohio Dominican comes to Bowman Gray Stadium in the return game of a home-in-home series.

Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play begins on September 21st as WSSU travels to Ettrick, Virginia to take on the Trojans of Virginia State before returning home on September 28th to host Bowie State University. The final CIAA North game will take place at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia on October 5. CIAA Southern Division play kicks off on October 12th as WSSU hosts Shaw University. WSSU will travel to Livingstone (October 19) in its final road game of the season. It was scheduled to take on Saint Augustine’s University on Nov. 2, but SAU is not playing football this fall. The last two home games for the Rams will be Johnson C. Smith on October 26 and Fayetteville State for ‘Our Forever Red’ homecoming on November 9th.

The CIAA championships will be on November 16, 2024, in Salem, Virginia.

#23 Wolfpack Closes Out Home Midweek Slate Against Norfolk State

5/6/2024 4:35:00 PM | Baseball

FSU's rally falls short after lengthy weather delay, tumbles to N.C. State in ACC baseball

No. 7 Florida State (34-10,13-9 ACC) fell to No. 20 NC State (26-17,13-9 ACC) 8-7 Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium to take game one of their three-game series.

The Noles got on the board early after a Cam Smith walk led to a James Tibbs RBI double in the bottom of the first inning, putting FSU up 1-0. NC State responded in the top of the second scoring four runs and taking a 4-1 advantage.

Coming out of a 1 hour and 40-minute weather delay, play resumed in the bottom of the third inning and the bats came out hot for the Noles with Tibbs and Marco Dinges hitting back-to-back home runs making the score 6-5 NC State after three.

Down three runs in the bottom of the eighth, Jaime Ferrer delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to just one heading into the ninth inning.

The Wolfpack held FSU scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to hang on for the 8-7 victory.

In relief, Brennen Oxford led the way for the Noles pitching 3.2 innings and allowing just one run while striking out five.

Offensively, the Noles tallied seven hits, two of those courtesy of Tibbs who finished the game 2-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

  • Third baseman Cam Smith drew two walks and scored two runs in his first two plate appearances, extending his on-base streak to 54 games, the eighth-longest in program history. Smith leads FSU with 57 runs scored.
  • James Tibbs and Marco Dinges hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning, FSU’s fourth back-to-backs of the year. FSU has hit a home run in a school-record 19 consecutive games and 40 of 44 this year.
  • Tibbs was 2-for-4 with a two-run HR and an RBI double. Tibbs leads FSU with 19 home runs, 69 RBI and 16 doubles; Tibbs 46 career home runs are tied for eighth in FSU history (Jeremy Morris, 1994-97).
  • Jaxson West hit his seventh double of the season.
  • Left fielder Jaime Ferrer threw out a runner at second base in the first inning; Ferrer has two OF assists this year and five in his career. Tibbs also threw out a runner at the plate to end the third inning, his fifth of the year and ninth of his career.
  • The last time FSU had multiple outfield assists in a game was the 2023 season opener vs. James Madison; Ferrer and Jordan Williams threw out runners in that game.
  • Ferrer singled in two runs in the eighth inning, extending his hitting streak to a team-high eight games.
  • Jamie Arnold earned his 100 th strikeout of the season. Arnold entered Friday night fifth in the country in total strikeouts.

No. 7 Florida State and No. 20 NC State will play game two of the series Saturday at 7:00 p.m. on ACC Network. The first 500 fans will receive FSU baseball t-shirts and 2024 NFL Draft picks Jared Verse and Trey Benson will throw the first pitch.
