If one of your vehicles is traveling interstate and isn’t registered under the International Registration Plan (IRP), you’ll need to order a temporary trip permit. 

A North Dakota trip permit is needed if your vehicle is traveling out of state and any of these apply:

If your vehicle doesn’t have an IFTA decal and license for the states or Canadian provinces it’ll be travelling in, you’ll likely need a fuel permit for that vehicle. 

You need a North Dakota fuel permit if your vehicle is traveling out of state and any of these apply:

  • Your power unit has 2 axles and a gross vehicle or registered weight over 26,000 lbs.

Trip Permits

A temporary permit is needed if the following vehicles cross state lines without International Registration Plan (IRP) credentials:

Vehicles with gross weights, combined gross weights, or registered weights over 26,000 pounds;

A vehicle that has 3 or more axles regardless of weight.

Fuel Permits

A temporary permit is needed if the following vehicles cross state lines without IFTA credentials and license for the states or Canadian provinces it'll be traveling in:

Vehicles with 2 axles and gross weights, combined gross weights, or registered weights over 26,000 pounds;

A power unit that has 3 or more axles regardless of weight

Specialty Permits

A mileage permit may be needed when operating in KY, NM, NY, OR, & CT. Highway Use Tax (HUT) permit may be needed when traveling in New York. Other specialty permits may include a Georgia amber light permit, a New Jersey alcohol permit, or a Florida loading zone permit.

Vehicles that are non-IRP/IFTA registered or exceeding the size/weight limitations must obtain valid permits before entering into a jurisdiction other than their base jurisdiction.

Trip Permits

Carriers who operate their qualified vehicle in the non-IRP registered location must obtain a Trip Permit. The trip permit is a temporary permit given instead of the IRP credentials for the registered vehicles.

Fuel Permits

A Fuel permit is a must for the truckers who do not have an IFTA decal and license for their vehicle. Carriers must hold a temporary fuel permit before entering a jurisdiction for which they are not properly permitted.

Oversize and Overweight Permits

If a vehicle is over-dimensional (oversize) or overweight, they must obtain an Oversize and Overweight Permit to authorize the movement according to vehicle size and weight.

North Dakota IRP & IFTA (ND Trip & Fuel)

The North Dakota DMV offers 72 hour trip permits authorizing travel in North Dakota for any vehicle that is subject to the International Registration Plan (IRP) and 72 hour fuel permits for any vehicle that is subject to the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) but is not registered under these programs.
