David Christian Bongartz was born in Aachen, Germany on the 4th of September 1980. Under the stage name David Garrett, he is one of the world’s most respected violinists, as renowned for his classical concerts as he is for his numerous crossovers with the world of pop and rock.

A lot is made of the youth of today’s pop stars. Look at the singles charts and you’re likely to find a whole lot of artists who are legally unable to do some of the things you’ll hear about in the other songs. From getting utterly wasted on everything under the sun to driving. However, artists in the world of classical music must look at them and laugh themselves silly. If you want to be a great classical musician, you’d better know your major scales by heart before you know the alphabet that well, and if you haven’t learnt your minor scales by the time you’ve started school you can forget about it. David Garrett is a perfect example of this. Lorde might have been performing covers on national radio by the time she was 13, but Garrett was a prize winning violinist by the time he was five.

What makes this more incredible is how it wasn't even going to be him playing originally. The first violin that Garrett’s father bought was for his older brother, but the four year old Garrett pretty much immediately took a shine to the instrument and was winning competitions within the year. By seven he was enrolled at the Lübeck Academy of Music where he excelled as something of a prodigy, he spent five years there and at the age of 12 he was taken under the wing of legendary Polish violinist Ida Haendel. This was, of course, after receiving his first Stradivarius violin the year before when he was 11, by this point he’d become renowned for his talents, and he made his first two CD’s by the time he was 13. He was also tapped for concerts on TV in his native Germany and The Netherlands.

Now, this is all extremely impressive but it could also be where it stops. It would be nothing new to hear about the child prodigy captivating a country for a summer, before either folding due to the pressure of it all or said country losing all interest but neither of those happened. Garrett went from strength to strength, performing with the Munich Philharmonic at 16, enrolling at London’s Royal College Of Music, studying at Juilliard a couple of years later (which he paid for by modelling, as if he wasn’t infuriating enough already), and it only got even more astonishing in his twenties, where he was able to set the world record for fastest violin player in the world when he was 26. The man is more than just a talent, he’s pretty much a force of nature and in the classical world he’s still practically a baby.

The best is yet to come from David Garrett, and if his seventeen studio albums, four DVD’s and eight awards are anything to go by, his best is going to be incredibly special indeed. Highly recommended.

In the spring of 2023, a concert tour started in Germany promoting David Garrett's successful new album "ICONIC" released by Deutsche Grammophon, the oldest record company in Germany.

David Garrett, this time in a trio with guitar and bass, continues to delight his audience. Currently, tickets are sold for 53 concerts in 12 countries, in addition to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Poland, Italy, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Turkey, Georgia and Singapore. Weigold & Böhm International Artists & Tours and planB Konzepte present this concert project in the best concert halls and report more than 70,000 tickets sold and 26 sold-out concerts. The "ICONIC" concert tour is very successful - 25 more concerts are being planned in 7 countries, including Australia and China this year and next year. As part of his concert tour, David Garrett will visit Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

The audience will be treated to a heartfelt tribute to the great violinists of the Golden Age, whose melodies inspired David Garrett as a child.

After his successful tour "Alive-my Soundtrack" in 2022 with 32 concerts in 11 countries, David Garrett opens a new chapter with ICONIC.

His new classical album ICONIC has released by Deutsche Grammophon on November 4, 2022. ICONIC is inspired by legendary violinists whose gems and soulful melodies thrilled David Garrett as a child. Music by Bach, Dvořák, Gluck, Kreisler, Mendelssohn and Schumann, to name but a few, can be heard in new arrangements for violin, guitar and orchestra (by Franck van der Heijden and David Garrett). David Garrett will play the program for the first time in a trio together with guitar and bass in concert.

David Garrett’s personal choice of music evokes the golden era of violin virtuosi, when performers such as Zino Francescatti, Arthur Grumiaux, Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Kreisler and Yehudi Menuhin delighted audiences with popular encores and other miniatures. They raise the young musician’s admiration until today. David immersed himself in their timeless recordings as role models and as a result conceived the program ICONIC.

“Unfortunately, many beautiful works from the early days of the great virtuosos have fallen into oblivion,” says David. “That's why it means all the more to me that I now have the opportunity to bring all these beautiful pieces back to life.”

The ICONIC Tour starts in mid-March 2023. Review: David Garrett "VALENTINES CLASSICS" EP and ICONIC Tour

Imagine a world where indulging in our guilty pleasures doesn't summon guilt, and enjoying something less refined doesn't provoke judgmental looks from the so-called cultural police. In the landscape of my mind, culpability isn't associated with the usual culprits like forbidden treats, banned books, or taboo love affairs. Indeed, I find amusement in defying those quick to judge matters of guilt, desire, or affection. However, my musical preferences continue to be a subject of considerable personal reflection. Such internal debate recently took center stage at a violin concert I attended—a performance that left me basking in both nostalgia and joy.

David Garrett came in like a "Wrecking Ball," electrifying the audience with music from Mozart to Metallica that put "Rock Me Amadeus" to shame, breaking down the walls of classical music etiquette.

It was September 29th at the Auckland Town Hall, and I was attending a performance of the ICONIC world tour. One of my favourite violinists of all time was in the spotlight. David Garrett came in like a "Wrecking Ball," electrifying the audience with music from Mozart to Metallica that put "Rock Me Amadeus" to shame, breaking down the walls of classical music etiquette. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation as David, accompanied by fellow musical mischief-makers Franck van der Heijden on guitar and Rogier van Wegberg on bass, launched into a whirlwind of catchy tunes. For me, it was a guilty pleasure extravaganza to recall my childhood dreams in which I imagined myself as the next David Garrett, boldly fusing pop with classical music while my violin teachers shook their heads in disapproval.

While Nigel Kennedy, Vanessa Mae, and Bond may have become less prominent, David Garrett remains an international artist who boldly bridges the gap between classical music and the mainstream vibes. He once paved the way for Lindsey Stirling, The Piano Guys, and even TwoSet Violin to emerge. There was a time when performing classical music in any way resembling mainstream culture was considered sacrilege. David isn't just an violinist; he's a master of blending classical tradition with the pulsating rhythms of rock. For that reason, seeing him at the Auckland Town Hall was truly moving. The nostalgia of the show brought tears of joy to my eyes and reminded me of the need to forget the old rules of classical concerts. It was amazing to see everyone, young and old, loving the music and enjoying themselves. Unlike traditional classical concerts, where clapping between pieces is forbidden, in this performance, clapping, photographs, and chat were not only allowed, but they were also encouraged. Laughter filled the air, and fun was the only agenda. Amid the euphoria, some fans let their enthusiasm run wild, transforming the atmosphere from a cool performance into something more akin to a raucous rock show. But can you blame us? When the music is this good, Ray Chan fans will agree that it's hard not to get carried away.

Unlike traditional classical concerts, where clapping between pieces is forbidden, in this performance, clapping, photographs, and chat were not only allowed, but they were also encouraged.

At this concert, not a single pair of underwear was thrown at him (surprisingly!), but in between tunes, he graciously answered questions from the audience. During one of these charming questions, he gave us a glimpse into his life beyond music. One lady, who felt very close to Garrett, dared to ask him about his marital status. Our beloved 40-year-old virtuoso, blushing like a shy teenager, revealed a side of him we hadn't seen before: a charming German bachelor. Many of us had assumed he was married or enjoying some romantic entanglement. However, with typical German formality (and a touch of modesty), he confessed that he was single and looking for that special someone. Imagine our collective surprise when, just a few months later, in Valentine's week no less, our musical crush released an EP entitled VALENTINES CLASSICS .

VALENTINES CLASSICS - EP

David Garrett's VALENTINES CLASSICS EP, released in February 2024, is a compilation of his most charming covers that spans from Miley Cyrus to Guns N' Roses, with an unusual sprinkle of the fiery Vivaldi's "Summer"– a peculiar mix for this Valentine's Day gift to fans. But, well, maybe that's just Garrett's special flair. He may speak sweetly in public, but behind closed doors, he is a whirlwind of stormy passion that only Vivaldi and the heavens above can fully comprehend! The EP really captivated me with its mix of covers, including recent hits and romantic gems.

Each track has been carefully chosen to evoke a very special Valentine's Day feeling, plus a little bit of fun, making it a perfect listen for lovers (or anyone looking for reimagined twists of elegance on these timeless hits). But I mean... can you imagine David doing the "Wrecking Ball" swing in true Miley style? Surely that would be a sight to behold... oh yes. Of course, such far-fetched fantasies will only be guests in the realm of the imagination and will never materialise into a sexy flying object. In all seriousness, the EP spans a broader spectrum of musical generations, with songs like Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine", as well as the more recent "Thinking Out Loud", popularised by Ed Sheeran. Each version of these songs was reimagined with a passionate orchestral twist. With six tracks in total, including "Fix You" and "November Rain", VALENTINES CLASSICS is a sweet and heartfelt musical letter for his fans.

It's a pity that it probably won't be released on vinyl, CD, or any physical format. And the marketing of VALENTINES CLASSICS –or lack thereof–was also very interesting to me. It was announced through a single Facebook post by David Garrett himself. This marketing method is noticeably more personal and direct, perhaps aimed specifically at capturing Garrett's most loyal fans. The strategy is also a departure from the promotional tactics used for his previous rock albums, such as Rock Revolution, Rock Symphonies , or Explosive . It's one for the die-hard fans, honey!

David Garrett Trio ICONIC Tour 2024

The ICONIC Tour has already been hailed as an extraordinary success, with 77 concerts in 23 countries demonstrating Garrett's ability to captivate audiences around the world. For many of us, this tour is not just concerts; it is also a heartfelt tribute to the legends who shaped the artistic vision of many violinists–those old-time violinists my teachers wanted me to love so much. The concert offers an evocative journey back to a time when these virtuosos captivated audiences with their talent as much as pop artists do today. The tour also follows the release of the ICONIC album by Deutsche Grammophon, which pays homage to the legendary violinists who were considered to be a Beyoncé or Shawn Mendes of their time.

This tour is still ongoing. Garrett just performed in Sicily , and he even has my native Mexico as the next stop in May. So, classical and rock fans can become violin aficionados for this event. The ICONIC World Tour is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, combining impeccable musicianship and a historical tour with a modern twist. Attending David Garrett's ICONIC concert in Auckland made me reflect on my own journey from scepticism to fulfilment in music. Far from being just a path of sacrifice, music has enriched my life. The tour stands out as a show like no other, a testament to David Garrett's extraordinary talent that rises above anything his critics might say.

The VALENTINES CLASSICS EP may seem modest when placed alongside the vibrant and ongoing contributions of other celebrities in popular music. However, for me, there is a poetic charm in releasing such a compilation in February, offering an intimate insight into the artist's fandom. This EP holds a special place in my heart, as it takes me back to my days of uncertainty about music, when I feared that choosing the violin would condemn me to a life of hardship, forcing me to give up relationships, food, and family for my craft. How wrong I was...

Thanks to artists like David Garrett and his contemporaries, who boldly blended the melodies of the past with the moods of today, this type of music is not just a possibility, but it is an irresistible career.

Thanks to the violin and music, I've traveled the world, performed on prestigious stages, and made many friends. Music has blessed me with some of the most memorable times and relationships of my life. To my father, who worried about my future in music, look where this path has led me. I'm profoundly grateful to artists like David Garrett, who've inspired me to wholeheartedly embrace the violin in all its forms. This journey has been filled with challenges, joys, and plenty of food. Here's to the art that shapes us and the unexpected journeys it takes us on.

En conferencia de prensa virtual desde su natal Alemania, afirmó que lo que hay que esperar de sus presentaciones serán clásicos, pero con el ánimo de un concierto pop contemporáneo, en especial por el repertorio que he elegido, o sea, temas de tres a cinco minutos, lo que permite interactuar con el público. Será un concierto de dos horas con piezas que muchos conocen .

Agregó: será un concierto muy accesible, que se sienta con el ánimo de un concierto de pop, que la gente se emocione, que se relaje, que disfrute y aplauda .

La primera parada del Iconic Tour en nuestro país será el 15 de mayo en Monterrey; seguirá los días 17 y 18 en Guadalajara, 20 y 21 en la Ciudad de México y el 23 en Puebla. Con estas presentaciones el violinista acumulará 103 conciertos en su gira mundial, 28 ciudades de cuatro continentes.

Destacó: “presentaré mi más reciente disco, Iconic; se lanzó en 2022, pero comencé a trabajarlo dos años antes, en la pandemia. Durante su elaboración decidí que el concepto del álbum fuera una reunión de dúo o trío, porque durante la gira quería tocarlo con guitarra y violín o piano y violín. Trabajé famosas piezas clásicas para que conectaran con la audiencia y sonaran tersas para todos. Así que por fin llego a México para presentarlo”.

Prosiguió: los conciertos que ofreceré serán en formato de trío; ya llevamos bastante tiempo de gira, he presentado por muchos países este disco, desde Australia hasta China y desde Europa hasta América. Por fortuna, ha sido muy exitoso, aunque a veces me abruma, pero cuando me siento así pienso en las cosas positivas, porque trabajar la fusión entre música clásica y rock no es bien vista ni recibida. He tenido mucha suerte con esta gira y estoy contento de comenzar las presentaciones en México y después seguir por otros países del continente .

A consideración del violinista alemán, Iconic Tour es el más exitoso que ha realizado; me siento muy orgulloso de todo el trabajo que hizo en conjunto el equipo que me acompaña. Lo que redescubrí fue lo asombroso que es trabajar cuando lo haces con pasión .

Luego de hacer una pausa, dijo: este concierto está confeccionado con las piezas que normalmente toco en soledad, en la sala de mi casa y ahora tengo la enorme oportunidad de interpretarlas frente a una audiencia .

Sonidos de varios países

De la vez pasada que se presentó en México, David Garrett se llevó algunos sonidos: “hicimos un crossover con alguna canción popular y cuando estuvimos pensando en el diseño sonoro-visual de Iconic Tour, nos llegaron muchos sonidos, no sólo mexicanos, sino de varios países, porque en mis conciertos no hay vocales; entonces, tengo que concentrarme en mi espectro musical para generar la atención de la audiencia a fin de que lo disfrute totalmente”.

Para el violinista alemán, Iconic Tour ha tenido varios desafíos; uno de ellos, “el más importante, fue que tuvimos que apropiarnos de las composiciones originales, hacerles nuevos arreglos, aunque sí conservamos el estilo de la época. El reto de hacer crossovers es componer y arreglar, como músico hay que tener buen juicio y conocimiento de los estilos musicales con el fin de adaptarlos. Así que todos los que quieren hacerlos tienen que estudiar armonía, composición, conocer todo tipo de música, desde la barroca y clásica hasta la moderna, porque al final el desafío es componer y crear piezas”.

Garrett contó que al hacer una nueva placa siempre imagino cómo presentarla en vivo, cómo sonará. Soy muy meticuloso para elegir el repertorio de las presentaciones en vivo, el orden, qué piezas funcionan, su dinámica, los tiempos y las armonías; considero que sea una pieza que llegue al corazón del público. Otra exigencia es mi estado físico y emocional en cada una de las presentaciones, ambos son de suma importancia para el violinista porque debes demostrar lo que puedes hacer con el instrumento y así conectar los diferentes puntos: tocarlo más calmado o más trepidante .

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Craig David is heading on massive UK tour with special guest – here’s how to get tickets

Craig David will not be chilling in February 2025, he’ll instead be spending many of his seven days of each week performing to large crowds.

The pop icon is heading on the Comittment tour, where he’ll visit 11 UK cities, starting at First Direct Arena in Leeds on February 2, and finishing in London at the iconic O2 on February 20.

He’ll be filling it in with adoring fans, who’ll want to make sure they arrive on time to see the support act who is another legend of the genre – Lemar, who has hits If There’s Any Justice and It’s Not That Easy. Anyone who was 50-50 about buying tickets is surely convinced now.

The pair will also visit Birmingham , Glasgow, Cardiff , Leeds, Newcastle, Milton Keynes, Brighton, Manchester, and Bournemouth.

Craig, 42, last took his music on the UK road in 2022, so fans will be excited to see him back where he belongs – nope, not on the M2, on stage of course!

How do I buy Craig David tickets?

Tickets will go on sale May 3 at 10am so pre-warn your boss that you’ll be occupied. You can buy tickets on Ticketmaster here . Only six tickets can be purchased per household so if you’ve got a big group hoping to get their hands on tickets, then make sure you have multiple devices.

Fans can also secure tickets earlier with pre-sale options at many of the venues, which begin May 1 at 10am.

What can fans expect from Craig David’s Commitment tour?

‘I can’t wait to bring my band back to the UK for my 2025 Commitment arena tour,’ teased Craig, who is also performing North America dates in May this year.

He added: ‘Looking forward to having a party and mixing up the classics and maybe something new…’

Craig has plenty of hits to choose from – he’s got an impressive 25 UK top 40 singles, and ten UK top 40 albums. His catchy songs include 7 Days , Fill Me In, and Walking Away.

He has become a legend in his field with multiple BRIT Award and Grammy nominations, and four MOBO Awards, and three Ivor Novello Awards, and he even inspired a heart-warming British tradition .

Most recently, he collaborated with Love Island star Wes Nelson on Abracadabra, which they performed on the ITV dating show . His recent statement also suggested there could be more new music on the way. Don’t leave us hanging Craig!
