20 Best Things to do in Nuevo Vallarta

Here are some of the best things to do, attractions, and activities in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico during your vacation. Our family has been compiling this list over the last 15 years, so you’ll be guaranteed to have an amazing trip to this little piece of paradise.

By taxi or Uber

Grand odyssey casino, about nuevo vallarta, mexico.

With 5 kilometers (3 mi) of golden beaches, luxurious resorts & condominiums, multiple golf courses, and first-class infrastructure, Nuevo Vallarta is considered one of the best beach destinations in Mexico. It actually has the 2nd highest number of hotels and resorts in the country (after Cancun, of course). In addition to all of that, it has very exclusive restaurants and two of the country’s most important marinas.

Nestled between Puerto Vallarta and Bucerias, this master-planned resort & condominium community features some of the most luxurious vacation home rentals and hotels such as the Mayan Palace, Dreams Villamagna, and Paradise Village. The newest addition to the area is the Grand Luxxe at Vidanta which received the prestigious AAA Five Diamond Award. Beachside, all-inclusive, short-term, or long-term stays, there is something for everyone in this town. There is even a U.S. Consulate located within the community at the Paradise Plaza Mall.

Weather & Rainy Season

Rainy season falls between the months of June, July, August & September. On average, the warmest month is August, and the coolest is February. The best time to visit is between April and June when the weather is amazing and it is still considered low season. If you’re interested in whale watching, however, visit between December and March.

Getting There

The main airport is Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR). It is well connected to all of Mexico, USA, and Canada. It is served by many major airlines such as Aeromexico, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, United, and Delta.

From the Airport, there are two options: Uber (~ $200 MXN) or Taxi (~ $300 MXN). Ubers aren’t allowed to get passengers at the airport pick-up area, but a quick walk over to the other side of the road via the pedestrian bridge solves this. Once you exit the building, just walk left towards the road and you’ll see the bridge. The Uber app will also help you find the pick-up zone.

Otherwise, grab a taxi for a little less of a hassle, but make sure you agree to the price before jumping in (they sometimes try to charge $400 MXN or more). You can also purchase a taxi voucher near each exit.

Best Nuevo Vallarta Activities

In this guide, we have put all our favorite restaurants, activities, and attractions in the area. We hope you enjoy your stay and fall in love with this little piece of paradise!

Whale Watching Tour

Season: December – March Each winter the majestic Humpback Whales migrate from the arctic to breed and reproduce in the sheltered coasts of our bay. These gentle giants can be seen breaching out of the water as parents instruct their baby calves in the ways of the watery world. Each year, between 300 and 500 Humpback Whales are registered in the area! There are daily tours leaving from the nearby marinas in La Cruz (Marina Riviera Nayarit), Nuevo Vallarta, and Marina Vallarta.

Marietas Islands National Park

Explore this group of small uninhabited islands while snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding. Dolphin encounters are a regular occurrence, but during the winter months, it is common to see humpback whales in the bay since this is a centuries-old breeding ground. In addition, you can visit the “hidden beach”, where you swim through cave formations and rock archways to an extraordinary oasis of white sand and crystal clear water.

If you are interested in doing a hike, we have some detailed instructions and maps to follow! Monkey Mountain is our favorite hike on the north side of the bay, and the Las Animas beach hike from Boca de Tomatlan is our favorite hike on the south side (past Puerto Vallarta).

Fishing Trip

Banderas Bay offers some of the best sport fishing in Mexico. Mahi Mahi and Marlin season is best from September to February, but Red Snapper and Jack Crevalle fishing are great all year! See a list of all our favorite fishing charters .

Eat & Drink

Nuevo Vallarta takes eating and drinking very seriously. While visiting, you should too. The culinary scene in Nuevo Vallarta has exploded over the past couple of years, allowing visitors to delight in a diversity of cuisines and experiences. See our curated list of the best  Nuevo Vallarta restaurants & bars .

Rent a Scooter

The greatest part of a motorcycle or scooter rental is the flexibility. You basically get priority parking wherever you go, and it works out to be a much better value than using taxis or Ubers. Plus, it allows visitors to fit lots of different attractions into a single day. For example, you could cruise down to Destiladeras Beach, Sayulita, San Pancho, Punta Mita, or Litibu beach. The best part is the freedom to set your own itinerary and go as you please!

Vallarta Botanical Gardens

A must for nature lovers, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens is a 30-minute drive south of Downtown Puerto Vallarta, but well worth the visit. Tucked into the Sierra Madre hills, this stunning ecological park has multiple trails and winding mountain walkways that showcase orchids, butterflies, and hummingbirds across its 79 acres. We walked all the trails in one afternoon, and they are all great, but if you only have time for one, our favorite was the Jaguar Trail which leads to a small beach and river swimming spot.

Rhythms of the Night

CRUISE, DINNER, & SHOW! Book a tour leaving from Nuevo Vallarta to the magical beach of Las Caletas by night. Watch the sun sink into the shimmering sea as you cruise to a secluded beach surrounded by the Sierra Madre mountains. Dine upon a gourmet 3-course meal by candlelight before watching the renowned Rhythms of the Night show, a stunning spectacle that promises to transport viewers to a spiritual land that time forgot.

Release Baby Sea Turtles

Season: June – December This is definitely on the top of our list for things to do in Bucerias as a family. The area’s coastline is one of the most important breeding grounds for multiple species of sea turtle, and Bandera Bay’s preservation program ensures that sea turtles will thrive for years to come. Liberation ceremonies are held daily at multiple volunteer-run camp. Release ceremonies change every day depending on availability, so make sure to check out release dates & times below.

Hire a Vacation Photographer

When was the last time your family took a photo with everyone in it? Hire a local professional photographer through LocalLens.com to return home with photo souvenirs that you’ll treasure for years to come. It’s a great idea for engagement photos, family portraits, honeymoon photos, bachelorette parties, or just because!

Water Taxi to Los Muertos Beach

If you’d prefer to take the scenic route to downtown Puerto Vallarta, grab a water taxi from Nuevo Vallarta to Los Muertos Beach. There is a small tourist information booth located south of the Paradise Plaza Mall. During the high-season months, water taxis are available every day, every hour.

Bike Tours & Rentals

Bici Bucerias offers really fun bike tours any day of the week. Their 3-Hour Bike & Food Tasting Tour includes sampling locally roasted coffee, freshly-squeezed juices, and mouthwatering tacos. In between food stops, cycle through different parts of Bucerias and some of the countryside to admire views of the Sierra Madre mountains.

Their 2.5hr Wine & Beer Bike Tour is another great option. They’ll take you to Culi’s for a Mexican wine pairing with some amazing dishes, then to a local brewery to try a flight of craft beer (IPA, blonde, stout, pale ale, and more). There is usually a third stop that changes throughout the year.

If you are a more serious cyclist, you may be interested in their Cycling Tour to San Juan from Bucerias . Ride for a 40kms (round trip) and stop whenever necessary. Your professional guide will give support to all levels of riders and you will see a part of the Mexican countryside you haven’t seen before with beautiful farms and quaint towns.

Cirque du Soleil Nuevo Vallarta

Stay tuned for the water-themed Cirque du Soleil show and dining experience opening 2021. Grupo Vidanta, JOYA, and Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group officially announced the launch, and construction is already well underway with a specially designed, world-class theater and a capacity of up to 600 guests.

Splash Water Park

Splash is a water park that offers a full day of fun for the entire family. It has water slides, a lazy river, and daily shows for the kiddos. No outside beverages are allowed, but they do allow you to enter with food that is perfect for a family picnic.

Get a Massage

There are many spots along the beach in Nuevo Vallarta that offer massages. The prices range between $500-700 MXN for 1 hour. We highly recommend Patty Spa which is within the Marina Suites Condos (there is another location, but this beachfront location is the best!). We have been going here for the last 20 years and you can’t beat the price or quality. Treat yo’ self!

The golf courses of Nuevo Vallarta are yet another stunning attraction worth seeing. We highly recommend checking out El Tigre , which was named one of the most challenging golf courses in Mexico. It is impeccable and surrounded by lush greenery.

Downtown Puerto Vallarta

Although this is technically not in Nuevo Vallarta, it is still worth the drive. Start by strolling down the Malecon, the boardwalk that is full of boutique shops, restaurants, and bars. Afterward, cross the swinging rope footbridge to the Cuale River Island & Market to buy all kinds of Mexican crafts and souvenirs. Keep walking south until you reach Los Muertos Pier, one of Puerto Vallarta’s most iconic landmarks. The views from the end of the pier are great so be sure and have your camera ready! Also walk down Basilio Badillo Street in the heart of the Romantic Zone which is filled with art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and bars. To finish off the day, cool off at the local craft brewery, Los Muertos Brewing, with amazing beers and delicious pizzas.

Chill at the beach

Yes, this is one of the more obvious things to do in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, but for good reason! Hang out under your beach palapa with a bucket full of ice-cold Pacifico beers while you enjoy one of Nuevo Vallarta’s spectacular sunsets. That’s the main reason you came, right?!

Crocodile Sanctuary El Cora

This is one of my favorite “off the beaten trail” things to do in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Great family activity for those interested in nature and wildlife. A local veterinarian gives the tour through the sanctuary as you learn about animals and support local conservation efforts. Some people complain about the road being a little rough, but it really isn’t too bad.

Brand new 5,000 m2 casino that offers many options for gaming and entertainment such as craps, poker, various card tables, slots, a sportsbook, bingo, and 300 shiny slot machines. Try their buffet from 9 am to 12 pm for $99 MXN or the Executive Buffet from 3 pm to 6 pm for $70 MXN.

UPDATE: This Casino has now moved to Bucerias (7 minutes north) and is called Incanto .

Nuevo Vallarta is on a stretch of Mexico’s Pacific coast known as the Riviera Nayarit. Nestled between Puerto Vallarta and Bucerias, this master-planned resort & condominium community features some of the most luxurious vacation home rentals and hotels such as the Mayan Palace, Dreams Villamagna, and Paradise Village. It is also located inside Bahía de Banderas (or Banderas Bay ) which is the largest bay in Mexico and one of the deepest bays in the world at more than 900 meters (~3000 feet) deep.

Travelers will find Nuevo Vallarta to be an extremely safe place. The beaches are very nice and they are patrolled regularly by police and hotel security.

Of course! The surf is gentle enough for swimming, and you can rent out jet skis, paddleboards, and kayaks.

Our group of 6 had the BEST adventure with team Peña, Cesar, Luis, Rafael, and Jesus! They took care of us and showed us an amazing time! Hours of adrenaline rushing!

If you are a thrill seeker look no further. This place would be hard to top. I've done zip lines in a few different locations on this big planet and this is by far my favorite. I have now done this Adventure two times. My guids were ABSOLUTELY amazing and I never felt a second of doubt that they had my safety as their highest priority... Good thing considering the HEIGHT of these Zips!! From the minute they picked me up, to dropping me off. Do not miss this LIFE changer!! The only drawback is the price of the photos. I'd like him to be a little more in the reasonable park of 75$ but it's more like $175

My Fiancé and I attended a wedding in Puerto Vallarta in October 2023. The Bride and Groom booked the entire wedding event as well as a dinner cruise for all the attendees the night before with Vallarta Adventures. They had guests fly in for their special event from ALL OVER THE WORLD. The dinner cruise was nice, and was held on a large catamaran where they served drinks and appetizers (a meat and cheese platter, a bowl of fresh cut fruit, and a bowl of shrimp with salsa). The evening ended fine and everyone went back to their various hotels for the night as the wedding party had to be up early to get a boat ride out to the beach where the wedding was occurring later that day. EVERY PERSON THAT WAS ON THE BOAT GOT EXPLOSIVE DIARRHEA AND NAUSEA between 1am and 3 am (4-8 hours after the cruise, the cruise was the ONLY event that everyone was at prior to the wedding)!!!!! Needless to say that the majority of the wedding party did NOT head out early in the morning and one of the groomsmen ended up at the hospital on an IV with severe dehydration. The wedding itself got moved by Vallarta Adventures to a backup beach because we were told the recent hurricane in the area washed out all the sand on the original beach. The location was still very nice but the guests were all sick during the event, the open bar went barely touched as did the dinner that was served. The Bride and Groom had to shorten the ceremony and didn't even get to say their vows because they were BOTH sick and couldn't be away from a bathroom for an extended period. The Bride and Groom have contacted Vallarta Adventures and the employee/wedding planner in an attempt to get some sort of compensation/offset for there special day being ruined by tainted food on the cruise but so far (over a month later) they have been ignored by management. WARNING - THIS COMPANY HAS NON EXISTENT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND DOES NOT SUPPORT THEIR CUSTOMERS IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG. DO NOT USE THEM - AT A MINIMUM DO NOT BOOK ANY GROUP EVENT PRIOR TO YOUR WEDDING.

This was the literal best. We booked the Caletas private beach excursion. I am the type that despises organized tours etc but... man. When in Puerto Vallarta with family (or friends!) this was just a gem of a day. What did we not have access to would be a better way to explain the day. Want a great lunch? delicious (unlimited) margs? kids adventure park complete with rock climbing, zip lines and a donkey ride? The beaches were great. The food was great. The drinks were great. The boat ride was rocky but that was the weathers fault. Look. This was the best. Cannot recommend enough. **Adding- we were suckered into purchasing the photo package and I was blown away. Over 200 pictures of our family AND a video of the kids in the adventure park for a very reasonable price. Will be coming back again for sure

We had a great tour whale watching. When we arrived, it was very organized, and there was a place to purchase concessions before we boarded the boat. When we boarded the boat, you do have to wait until we get on the main water before they start serving food and drinks. If I had known that I would have made sure I ate before. The staff was great. We had a great time. Food was good. I personally got seasick, but that was no fault of the boat. I would use this tour group again for other adventures.

Had a great time with the sea lions. Richie and Karla were great! It was cool spending time with the animals and their trainers. Lunch was tasty as well. Best nuggets del pollo I've ever had! And the berries were so juicy and full of flavor. We picked a winner!!!

The wedding coordinator tried to ruin my wedding. Febe was my last planner and by far the worst. I requested multiple times about the reception settings and my ideas. To have them completely ignored. I wanted to arrange the reception tables one or two rows. These ideas were all pulled from the Pinterest page I was provided by past work that was done. I referenced a setting with flowers and candles and provided pictures, again, pulled from the Pinterest page. To which I kept getting ignored. She would not layout the setting for the reception or give me any options to try to recreate the setting I wanted. I asked the napkins to be arranged in a certain way. I provided a picture. She acknowledged this. But on the wedding day, they were not folded in the way I asked. I did not know there would be a sweetheart table with a floral arrangement. I would have liked to pick that out, but she never get back to me about the set up. Next, Febe came over to the Air bnb we were staying at. We went over the wedding. She met my friend that has a gluten allergy, they went over the menu for her. I paid $35 extra. She was not given the menu item she picked out, and I paid extra for. She picked out cheese ravioli and was given boiled broccoli and boiled chicken. The day of the wedding, the boat was sent to the wrong port. I had called and inquired and emailed to confirm the port would be in Puerto Vallarta. As I found out the day of, I was supposed to be given a boat number, that was never provided nor did she confirm this. The boat left and hour late. This boat went so fast that it was giving my guests motion sickness. This is supposed to be a fun relaxing day not rushing to try to get to the venue. Febe never addressed this or offered any apology. We were 45 mins late to the venue and thus extremely stressed about timing of the ceremony and pictures. We did not give enough time for pictures due to the late arriving boat, and rushing to try to beat the sunset. I did not get all the pictures I should have been able to had I been given the time that I was supposed to. The ceremony did not have enough chairs set up. I don't know how this is possible, given the headcount was finalized. Also my guests said they had to kill several cockroaches on the beach during the ceremony. Several of my guests said they noticed many cockroaches on the beach. Next, Febe and I discussed the music. We met on Thursday and she asked me to get her the music that night. I made Spotify playlists and provided the music sets for the various songs. The song I was supposed to walk down the aisle had a dedication to someone else, so they never listened to make sure it was the correct song. At the reception, she came up to me and said the playlist wouldn't download because I did not give her the music in time. She never said this would be an issue and I provided on the day she asked for. She never once apologized , or provided support. She simply said it was my fault. So my reception music was never played. This was extremely devastating since I had picked out specific songs for this portion of the wedding. Moving on to the first dance. They announced the first dance. A breakup song, "Picture" was played and not my first dance song, until the next song. One of the bridesmaids had to go tell Febe and DJ to turn off this song and play the song we had picked out. On the way back, we added for Modern pop music, they played hardcore rap music. This day was by far stressful and Febe seemed to go out of her way to make this process and the things that came up as miserable as she could. She did not try to find a solution, she repeatedly blamed me. In my opinion, she is extremely unprofessional. In addition, the DJ wasn't provided the music I requested. I felt my experience with my wedding was ruined due to all of these issues. I know that the saying day does not always go perfect but It was just one thing that went wrong. You are supposed to be there to plan my perfect day. This is a long list of things that went wrong.

Dont use! will take your money and not provide the service! Had an excursion planned for 8 people- paid for and we were all ready to go. our ship arrived late and we called to ask them to wait 10 minutes and they refused. they would not compensate us or provide a different opportunity for us the same day and would not refund our money. we offered to taxi directly to the site where the first excursion began and would have been there ON TIME, but they refused. they are not someone we would ever recommend. they showed no compassion for our situation and it was all over a 10 minute delay.

Photo of Corinna M.

Our family of four spent several hundred US dollars on our excursion to Yelapa and Majahuitas. The tour was advertised to be around 7.5 hours. We were told to be there promptly by 7:30am, but it didn't actually leave until 8:00am. The boat ride and crew on the cruise part was nice. The snorkeling portion was short at less than an hour. I found it pretty ridiculous that they forced you to wear a life jacket to snorkel. It made it difficult to actually snorkel well and really should have been up to the discretion of the customer. Even in the US, companies just have you sign a liability waiver to relinquish risk. A little overkill and spoiled the fun of that activity. The spot was pretty and there were beautiful fish. So they get a star for that. At Yelapa, we were bombarded by all the third party vendors. Felt like lambs to the slaughter. My son exited the water taxi on the beach and a guy literally plops an iguana in his arms and demands we give him money. Good grief! There is an option for a hike to a waterfall with no water flowing. I'm glad we chose to rest on the beach. The boat stopped at another port in downtown both ways. This secondary stop turned the excursion into almost 8+ hours. Normally, I wouldn't care, but we needed to get back to our hotel for a reservation by a certain time. I budgeted extra time for this excursion and they still went way over. Upon return to the marina, we were rushing to get to the water taxi so we could get back to the hotel on time. They seated a party on the last seats of the taxi who didn't have everyone there even though my family was all present. The staff didn't care about our time crunch and left us to wait for the next one. I pointed out that their tour ran over, but all of a sudden the staff couldn't be bothered to help us. One of the workers began screaming at us to move off the dock in Spanish because they all of a sudden didn't know any English. In our experience, this company has no clue how to make customers feel welcomed. They're only concern is to get their money and tips and very little hospitality.

Memories made for a lifetime! Piña, Cesar, Rafa, Fernando, and Jesus were THE BEST guides. We went as a family of 5 for the Outdoor Adventure. These guys kept us safe and laughing the entire time. I pray God keeps these boys safe to continue doing what they love and blessing others with their presence. Photos were pricey but totally worth it for the captured memories.

Nuevo Nayarit Travel Guide

You will be excused for not knowing where Nuevo Vallarta or as it’s now known, Nuevo Nayarit is. I had no clue before I moved here. But in the Nuevo Nayarit travel guide, I’m going to share everything I know about the place I used to call home.

Ok so I’m not going to lie, Nuevo Vallarta is a bit of a strange in-between place. Named the ‘New Vallarta’ almost as an extension for its neighboring city Puerto Vallarta . In 2022 they had a bit of a rebrand and it’s now officially called Nuevo Nayarit. But the new name is taking a while to catch on. So in this post I will mostly refer to it as Nuevo Vallarta for ease.

But things can get a bit confusing because the two cities are actually in two different Mexican states! Puerto Vallarta is in Jalisco, whereas Nuevo Vallarta is in Nayarit .

So why would anyone visit Nuevo Vallarta? What is there to do there? Where are the best places to stay in Nuevo Vallarta? Well, I’m going to answer all of these questions and more in this post.

In this Nuevo Vallarta travel guide in which I’m going to briefly touch on a lot of subjects to give you a well-rounded overview. Where relevant I have linked to blog posts I’ve written that go into much more detail about specific subjects. So if you want more information, click on the link to learn more.

Did You Get Insurance Yet?

If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that you need to be prepared for anything!

The Insurance companies I personally recommend are Hey Mondo and  Safety Wing

Hey Mondo is great if you are looking for a great value flexible policy. They offer single trip cover, annual multi trip cover, and long term travel cover.

Safety Wing is great value with monthly cover starting at $39. It’s super easy to use and it just renews each month. I currently use them as they offer me free cover for my son as part of my policy.

Read my full travel insurance post here where I go into detail about the companies.

Top 10 Things to do In Nuevo Vallarta

1. relax at a beach club.

Nuevo Vallarta is pretty much just a long ole line of hotels and beach clubs. It’s super chill and the beaches are never busy. But it can also be a little on the pricey side. I recently spent a day at one beach club which cost $500 USD for the day! Almost all of the hotels offer day passes, which normally run from 9-6pm. More often than not though it’s actually not much more expensive to book a night in one of the inclusive resorts, that way you get 2 days of beach club and a nice in a nice hotel. I always check booking.com to find the best all-inclusive deals.

Two of the most popular beach clubs you can visit that aren’t in a resort are Sabal Playa and MozzaMare

2. Take a Bike Tour to the Tuesday Market

This is one of the first activities I did when I arrived in Nuevo Vallarta . The bike tour is only available on a Tuesday, as this is the day the market happens. You will be met at your resort by your guide who will get you set up with a bike before taking the bike path all the way through Nuevo Vallarta to the Tuesday market. Once there you will get an hour to wander around the market before heading to one of the cutest restaurants I’ve been to in this area for a mojito and a fish taco. It’s a super fun and relaxed tour and a fun thing to do on a Tuesday morning.

You can book your tour by clicking here.

3. Go Surfing

There is no surf in Nuevo Vallarta, but there is plenty close by. You have a few options, depending on if you have a car or not, and how far you are willing to travel. The closest beaches to surf are Punta De Mita and La Lancha. If you want to travel by public transport then La Lancha is a little easier as you can just take the bus there and rent a surfboard. You can also take a bus to Punta de Mita, but it’s a little further away. If you don’t mind traveling a bit more than Sayulita is also a good option. Click here to read more about surfing in Sayulita and surrounding areas, including how to get there and recommendations for board rental and surf lessons.

4. Get Pampered at the Spa

I honestly died and went to heaven on my birthday when I was treated to a spa day at Melange World Spa . It isn’t cheap, but it is oh so worth every $. You can get a whole array of treatments, but if you really want the full experience then you need to book one of the signature themed treatments. I had the Bali experience, which was magical. I honestly came out and floated home. You can learn more about visiting the spa here .

5. Cycle to Bucerias

I really love the vibe in Bucerias and it’s very easy to get to by bike from Nuevo Vallarta. You simply take the bike path all the way up and then take the yellow brick path on the right when you get to the end. Follow that path right alone until you arrive in Bucerias. It’s also easy to walk, but biking is more fun! If you don’t have a bike you can rent one from Bahia Bikes by clicking here.

6. Go Scuba Diving

This is a summertime activity. I went once in the winter, never again! Not only was it freezing cold, but the visibility was also awful! From mid April until October are the best months to go scuba diving in Nuevo Vallarta. You can read my in depth guide to scuba diving in Puerto Vallarta and Nayarit here.

7. Walk the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta

Sadly, Nuevo Vallarta lacks a central community area like Puerto Vallarta. So if you want to wander around and enjoy sea views and cute shops, then you should take the short journey to Puerto Vallarta. You can take the public bus, grab an Uber, or rent a car . Get dropped off as close to the Malecon as you can and then walk down to the bridge. When you cross the bridge you will see some steps to your left, walk down them and wander through the market. From here you can either walk back the way you came or turn in and walk back through the streets.

8. Go Whale Watching

Whale Watching in Nuevo Vallarta runs from December through to March. It’s my favorite time of the year! If you pack some binoculars you can often see them from the shore jumping around which is so cool. But if you want to get up close and personal then you will need to book a whale-watching tour. There are so many you can choose from so it really depends on what other activities and level of comfort you want.

9. Visit Islas Marietas Secret Beach

From Nuevo Vallarta, Islas Marietas is very accessible. You can book a Marietas Islands tour from Nuevo Vallarta, or make your own way to Punta de Mita and take a tour from there. If the Islas Marietas tour you are booking costs under $100 USD then they are NOT going to be taking you to the secret beach. They will just be taking you around the islands. So if you want to actually visit the secret beach then you need to be very clear about it with the tour guide. The tour does include a short swim to get to the island, and you will be provided with a life jacket and helmet to wear for your safety.

10. Tequila Tasting

One of my absolute favorite activities haha, tequila tasting with Taste of Sayulita. It’s such a fun concept, basically, they come to you in your airbnb or apartment and they do a tequila tasting workshop with great food pairings. All of the tequila is artizanal from small tequila producers in Jalisco and the food is delicious! It was a very fun night. And if you are more of a Mezcal drinker then you can also request a Mezcal tasting. Click here to learn more and book.

BONUS: Do a Bucerias cultural tour

I did the most wonderful cultural tour in Bucerias recently with Human Connections , and I really can’t recommend it enough. During the tour we went to visit the homes of 3 Nayarit locals: Francisco a ceramist, Rolando a weaver, and Nallely a restaurant owner and amazing chef. It was not only a fun way to spend half a day, but it was also very informative. I learned so much about each of their crafts and was truly inspired by their talents. Trust me, you don’t want to miss doing one of these tours! Click here to book.

Resturants in Nuevo Vallarta

Can we all just agree that Mexican food is amazing? OK good. The food in Nuevo Vallarta is especially good, especially if you want to eat a variety of international cuisine. This is due to the fact that most of the restaurants are inside the hotels which can afford to bring in the best chefs.

If you want street food you need to take an uber to the location on the map below. It’s close to where I live in the local side of Nuevo.

If you want restaurants here are my favorite restaurants in Nuevo Vallarta:

Insu Sky Bar

Perfect place to enjoy the sunset while eating delicious food. As it’s up on the roof you really do get a perfect view of the bay. Best for fish lovers.

The place to go for Asian food in Nuevo Vallarta. The menu is a mix of different Asian dishes from sushi to Thai.

Right on the beach in Bucerias, this is one of my favorite no-frills restaurants in the area. It serves a mix of Mexican and seafood dishes and is very reasonably priced.

The Blue Shrimp

No sea view at this restaurant, but you do get a beautiful view out over the lake. As I’m sure you can get from the title, this place is all about the seafood. I’ve eaten there a few times and the food is ok, nothing special. In fact, we had to send our food back because it was cold. But the service was very good and they definitely cater to the American/ Canadian market. Basically, it’s a very touristic place, you won’t find many locals in here!

Eddie’s Place

This is more of a fun evening affair where they put on entertainment while you are enjoying your meal. There is always some kind of live music or dancing. S get there early to get a good table and plan to stay late!

Nuevo Vallarta Money Saving Tips

Nuevo Vallarta really isn’t a budget travel destination. It’s more of a wine and dine beach club kinda destination. But there are a few ways you can save money. The first would be to rent a car . This way you can get out and about without needing to take taxis or book on tours. Car rentals are pretty reasonable here and can start from around $17 USD per day. Click here to check prices.

Restaurants in Nuevo Vallarta are excellent, and with that quality comes a price tag. So if you really want to save some money then consider renting an apartment and cooking some meals at home rather than eating out the whole time.

My advice is also to know the taxi prices and as always, learn some Spanish ! It’s an instant way to save a lot of money. I took this course ran by my friends at Heart of Travel.

Nuevo Vallarta Packing Advice

It’s Mexico, so you really can wear what you want here. That said, Nuevo Vallarta is full of fancy restaurants and beach clubs, so you might want to dress for the occasion!

Here are a few cute beach club outfits I recently invested in.

Accommodation in Nuevo Vallarta

I don’t think the words budget and Nuevo Vallarta really go together haha. But I’ve tried to list a good range of some recommended places to stay in Nuevo Vallarta.

How to Get to Nuevo Vallarta (and how to get around)

Getting to Nuevo Vallarta is very easy! Most people fly into Nuevo Vallarta from Puerto Vallarta airport . It’s actually faster to get to Nuevo Vallarta from the airport than it is to get to downtown PV most days as the airport is smack bang in the middle of both. I wrote a detailed guide going through all of your options from getting to the airport to Nuevo Vallarta that you can read here.

The best ways to get from the airport to Nuevo Vallarta are:

  • Airport Taxi
  • Private Airport Transfer
  • Renting a Car

Medical and Dental in Nuevo Vallarta

Thinking about getting some medical or dental work done while in Nuevo Vallarta?

I actually had my full mouth reconstructed while living in Nuevo Vallarta and it was the best decision I ever made. I loved my new smile so much that I even convinced my Mom to travel down to get her dental implant in Mexico with my dentist.

You can read all about my Mom’s experience here, and learn more about dental implants in Mexico here .

Working in Nuevo Vallarta

If you are a digital nomad planning to visit Nuevo Vallarta you will be pleasantly surprised that there is fiber optic wifi here, so check it’s installed in your accommodation before booking. There are currently no coworking spaces in Nuevo Vallarta, the best option here is a starbucks inside the shopping centre! For the digital nomad scene you will need to head to either Puerto Vallarta , or Sayulita .

Safety in Nuevo Vallarta

It’s honestly one of the safest places I have lived in the world. You will have no issues with safety here in Nuevo Vallarta. Of course, as always keep an eye on your belongings etc, but there are no added safety measures I’d recommend.

Safety Wing Insurance for Nomads

Nuevo Vallarta Travel Guide planning

🧳 Any recommendations on what I should pack for Nuevo Vallarta?

Yes! I have created a whole packing guide to Nuevo Vallarta which you can read here and you can also check out my packing list for Nuevo Vallarta on Amazon here .

🚗 Where can I book bus or private transportation while I’m in Nuevo Vallarta?

I strongly recommend using GottoGo . You can book almost all transport in the major Mexican tourist destinations through them online. They don’t just cover buses they also cover shuttles, ferries, and private drivers.

🎫 Where can I buy tickets for museums, attractions, and tours in Nuevo Vallarta?

I recommend either Viator  or GetYour Guide . They have a lot of options!

👩‍⚕️ What is the best insurance to have while traveling?

I recommend using Heymondo for a great value policy. The app also offers you 24/7 Dr Chat. For Digital Nomads check out SafetyWing  digital nomad insurance.

I have also written a blog post covering all my recommended travel insurance here

✈️ Any flight recommendations?

WayAWay offers you cheap flights with cashback. You can use this code CLAIRE22 to get 10% off. Otherwise Skyscanner or Expedia are my go-to flight searching platforms.

📱What do you use for internet connection while traveling?

I’m a big fan of personal WiFi devices and they have saved my ass so many times when traveling. I wrote a full review of the top travel WiFi devices you can read here . I personally use GlocalMe  as I can either pop in a physical sim card or use their local carrier.

With regards to my phone connection, I use e-sims while traveling, so rather than having to swap out my regular sim card I can download the app and buy a virtual sim card. I recommend using either Airhub or Alosim . Both have great coverage of multiple countries and are very easy to use.

🛏️ What is the best platform to use for booking accommodation?

The 3 best platforms that I normally use are Booking.com , Hotels.com , and Expedia  They offer great deals and multiple options. I always check all three to be sure of the best deals.

🛅 Do you have any luggage recommendations for traveling?

I do have a complete list of the best packing and luggage products that I recommend, you can check the list here . I’m currently traveling with this suitcase and this backpack .

The Best Time To Visit Nuevo Vallarta

This is really going to depend on what you want to do here! If you want whale watching, then January or February are the best months. If you want to do outdoor activities such as hiking this is also a good time as it’s cooler.

If you want to go scuba diving then May or June are good months as the sea temp and visibility are both good, but it’s not too hot when you are on dry ground.

The only months I’d avoid are August and September, and possibly October as these are the hottest months and also the stomyist. If you visit during these months be sure to pack your umbrella!

Lonely Planet Mexico (Country Guide)

Where would we be without the trusty Lonely Planet Mexico book?!? It really is the best all-around guide to Mexico. The only issue I ever have with these books is that often the information can be outdated, but if you want to really explore Mexico, not just the tourist trail version of Mexico then get this book on your Kindle . It’s oftern free if you have a kindle unlimited subscription .

Oaxaca: Home Cooking from the Heart of Mexico

It’s all about the food here in Mexico. Especially in Oaxaca, thought of as the culinary heart of Mexico. This Mexican cookbook is the first true introduction to Oaxaca n cuisine by a native family, each dish articulates their story, from Oaxaca to the streets of Los Angeles and beyond.

The book showcases Mexican “soul food” serving up 140 authentic, yet accessible recipes using some of the purest pre-Hispanic and indigenous ingredients available.

Midnight in Mexico: A Reporter's Journey Through a Country's Descent into Darkness

As much as I don’t want to perpetuate Mexico’s reputation as a county full of cartels, drugs, and danger. It can’t really be ignored, and I know many people are interested in learning more. So I’ve included Midnight in Mexico on my list of books to read. It’s a true crime book written by a Mexican-American journalist and migration lawyer. It’s about as close to the truth as you can get. Being. journalist here in Mexico is one of the most dangerous arrears you can have. But Corchado is known for never shying away from the truth reporting on government corruption, murders, and the drug cartels of Mexico. In 2007, Corchado received a tip that he could be their next target, he had twenty-four hours to find out if the threat was true…

An old, but a goodie! This one is for all of you lovers of romance novels! It’s described as:

“A novel of passion, food, and magic, Like Water For Chocolate is a romantic, poignant tale, touched with moments of magic, graphic earthiness, bittersweet wit – and recipes.”

Forbidden love, family obligations, and seduction by food… what more could you ask for in a novel!

Moving To Merida

I must confess, my friend Mexico Cassie wrote this book. That doesn’t mean it’s not a bloody brilliant guide to moving to Mexico, because it is. As someone who moved to Mexico there was so much of this book that resonated with me, even though I moved here myself, without a family.

She goes in to great detail about the visa application process and some other notoriously tricky things like trying to buy a car or find a good school for your kids.

If you are considering a move to Merida , or anywhere in Mexico actually this is a great read!
