Tadoba National Park History

There was a mythological tale, told in parts about a man who became the sanctity. Taru, a Gond tribal from a respected village confronted a prodigious tiger near a lake in his village. A Ferocious battle between the tiger and the man resulted in a disputed conclusionwhere some say that Taru defeated the tiger while others believe that despite his bravery, Taru was executed by the tiger. Regardless of whatever the tale is the man was considered a legend. A Shrine was also constructed in his memory along with the lake and the surrounding forested area which is known by the name ‘Tadoba’, from the man’s name ‘Taru’. The Bulletin was then passed in the year 1931 stating that the shooting of tigers is prohibited in the national park and the surrounding protected area. With a total area of 45 km surrounded by Tadoba lake, the area has been declared a sanctuary in 1935. In the year 1942, shooting ranges in Tadoba were declared as the game reserves with Karwa, Kalsa, Moharli, and Mul blocks, and the permits being issued in Karwa and Kalsa blocks. Gond Kings governed the territory for several centuries as they did ample for central India. It was established by the Marathas during the 18th century following the British period about a century later. The Area was declared a reserved forest in the year 1879 and later, in the year 1955, Tadoba became the earliest national park the same year as the Kanha National Park. Even after passing of the bill, overexploitation, hunting and poaching, and extensive cultivation continued. It was during the 1970s that the four hunting blocks were permanently closed due to continued illegal activities. In the year 1986, an area encompassing about 506.32 sq. km was declared as Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary. And in the year 1993, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) with an area extending up to 622.87 sq. km was established thereby merging the national park and the sanctuary area.

In short, one can get an idea of the conservation chronology of TATR through the points listed below:

  • 1873- British started planned fire protection in Tadoba
  • 1879- Tadoba is declared as the Reserved Forest
  • 1905- Tiger shooting was prohibited except for blocks with ‘special permits’
  • 1907- First forest rest house was built by Britishers
  • 1931- Restrictions were placed on the shooting of all the animals
  • 1935- 45- A Total of 45 sq. km. of the area covered by the Tadoba lake
  • 1942- Tadoba declared as the game reserves for shooting blocks
  • 1955- Tadoba National Park116.55 sq. km area was notified
  • 1968- Collection of all Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP) prohibited
  • 1973- 74- All four hunting blocks closed for hunting
  • 1986- Tendu leaf collection was banned within the national park
  • 1989- Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was transferred to the Tadoba National Park Division
  • 1992- NTFP collection was wholly banned in Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary
  • 1993- TadobaAndhari Tiger Reserve 622.87 sq. km area notified
  • 1997- Management plan for Tadoba Andhari National Park was approved
  • 1998- 2000-Tiger restrictions were placed on tourists and entry of the people and cattle into TATR
  • 2008- Core area of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve notified
  • 2010- Buffer area of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve 1127.17 sq. km notified
  • 2013- Unified control of the entire area was handed over to the field director of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve

The Tadoba jungle tiger reserve is the largest national park in Maharashtra. The total area covered around 1725.40 Sq. km. And it is known as the Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest.

According to the Wildlife Institution of India's Department of Animal Ecology and Conservation Biology, they recorded 88 tigers in the forest using the SECR methodology. Most of the tigers are seen in the core zone rather than the buffer zone. As per the recently updated report, the Tadoba jungle has 115+ tigers in the National Park. The Todaba jungle has lakes in the southwest; there is Tadoba Lake, where it became a bridge between the buffer zone and the national park. Then there is Telia Lake, where the 'Tiger Sisters of Telia' documentary got shot. In the Tadoba jungle, the north and west covered up the densely forested hills and meadows, and densely forested hills covered up the area from north to south. Then there are cliffs, talus, and caves for several animals.

Visitors Experience

We saw 5 tigers in 4 safaris, along with a plethora of other animals. The park was also huge, much bigger than I thought. Unfortunately we didnt see any adult males, but we plan to come more often and hopefully we will next time. All the different zones we were in offered their own unique experiences. Would highly reccomend this place. Probably the best place to see Tigers in their natural habitat in the world!

Overall, I think it is a great place to visit. The tigers are beautiful and majestic creatures, and it is amazing to see them in their natural habitat.

It's a good place to rejuvenate and spend time with friends and family. Tadoba Tiger Reserve 🐅 does not require an introduction as such so I am only sharing my experiences . In one simple line it is much better organized and maintained than what the expectations were.

Tadoba is one of the Best places to visit to witness tigers in jungle. We did safari in Moharli gate and were lucky enough to spot 3 tigers in our safari and few other animals too. But make sure you book your safari slot online in prior and summer is the best time to spot the wild animals in the jungle.

Tadoba

Tadoba National Park

Tadoba is a forest that bears the name of a local tribal deity called “TARU” which is revered in the area.

Located in the Maharashtra province’s Chandrapur district, this National Park has a hilly topography with an average elevation of 200–350 metres.

According to the famous folklore here, TARU was the tribal village chief, who came face to face with a powerful tiger at a lake close to his hamlet.

The outcome of the violent combat is debatable; some claim Taru defeated the tiger, while others think Taru was killed despite his valour.

A shrine was built in his honour under a huge tree next to the lake.

The lake and its neighbouring forests took acquired his name and came to be known as Tadoba.

Sujit Kumar Raut

I and my family had a great time staying at the resort.I would definitely recommend this place for 3 reasons.Firstly it's General manager Mr.Jayant has a very good team to look after all your requirements.Secondly it is situated just outside Navegaongate,so if you are doing a safari through Navegaongate, this is the best place to stay.Thirdly the cottages are well maintained, the room and bathroom are big enough for a comfortable stay for a family.

The most outstanding thing about Jharana Jungle Lodge is the staff, all the staff including the restaurant team, reception, housekeeping, gardeners and security. They made us feel incredibly welcome. The safari drivers were excellent and they worked hard with the forest guides to ensure we saw as many animals and birds as possible but always with respect for the forest and its inhabitants. Jharana is very close to the heart of Tadoba which is a beautiful forest full of amazing wildlife. We were lucky to see magnificent tigers after many years of trying without success in other locations in India.

We, a group of five, stayed at thrJharana Jungle Lodge for three nights. It is very close to the Navegaon Gate of Tadoba Tiger Reserve. Recommended for a very quiet and peaceful stay... whilst visting the Reserve to enjoy the Safari.

8 best hotels and homestays in Tadoba

By Arundhati Ail and Chandrahas Choudhury

Trees N Tigers Tadoba is among the best hotels and homestays in Tadoba

It’s no secret that Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra is fast becoming every safari junkie’s go-to. It’s no surprise, given that Tadoba offers visitors 20 zones—each with different topography, night safaris, and a plethora of wildlife—including the tiger. But where should you base yourself to enjoy the wonders of the jungle? Here are the best hotels and homestays to stay in Tadoba.

What’s the best time to visit Tadoba?

As per naturalist and wildlife tour guide Swanand Deshpande, March to June is the best time to visit. The summers in Tadoba can be unforgiving–with temperatures touching 40°C–which means that the smaller water channels dry up, forcing mammals to converge towards the larger water bodies. So, the scouting area narrows down naturally. But if you can't bear the scorching summer heat, mid-January to mid-March is also a good time to visit. It is also the fruiting season for many trees, turning the forest into a thriving feeding ground for all sorts of critters. If you’re interested in birding, head to Tadoba between November and February for winter migrants. This is when the weather is clear and temperatures remain within 20°C. March to July is also a good time to spot summer migrants. Read more on Deshpande’s tips on permits, zones and what to spot in Tadoba here .

Trees N Tigers, Tadoba

Snooze for longer on your safari holiday. Trees N Tigers is located just 15 minutes from the gates of Tadoba National Park, and forms a cosy base to relax at after a long day of spotting animals in the wild. The 12 safari tents sit by the Uma River surrounded by mango trees and paddy fields, with each opening up to a sun deck with a private pool. To accommodate families, the hotel has combined two tents into a family suite with a larger plunge pool. At mealtime, fresh produce plucked from the gardens shine on your plate. Beyond safaris, go birdwatching, explore nature trails, or enjoy a candlelit bush dinner with a bonfire and food hot off the grills. Website ; doubles from Rs25,000*. -Shradha Shahani

The Spotted Owlet Farm House

Named after an owl on the property, just 2 kilometres from the Moharli Gate of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, lies Hans Dalal’s Spotted Owlet Farm House ; a home in the jungle. Located in the buffer zone, this property is surrounded by 2,000 trees and 87 species of birds right within its gates. The two-acre plot features three cottages—named Ranthambore, Tadoba and Bandhavgarh—and a two-bedroom villa built of stone which keeps it naturally cool in the summers. There is also a dip pool, indoor and outdoor dining areas, a main kitchen, a washing machine and dryer, a smokeless bonfire pit, a fireplace with a seating area, and two hammocks under the trees. All rooms have air conditioning and electrical heaters. Host Dalal is a sound engineer by profession and a wildlife conservationist by passion, and runs an NGO called ‘PROWL’, which works to save tigers in the wild. He maintains agricultural water harvesting on his farm and lives in a mud cottage made from cow dung, straw and mud on the property. He thoroughly enjoys interacting with guests and welcomes any pets on the premises. When here, enjoy jeep safaris of the forest, boat safaris in the Irai Dam, and a tour of the Tadoba butterfly garden (Dalal can organise these with an advance notice of three months), and lay on the hammocks under the trees on the property to catch a quick snooze. Doubles from Rs9,000 inclusive of all meals; website -Kyra Kewalramani

Waghoba Eco Lodge

Waghoba Eco Lodge is spread over seven acres, about a two-hour drive from Nagpur airport in Maharashtra. Set in the buffer zone, the hotel is within a 30-minute drive of the tiger reserve’s core gates at Khutwanda and Moharli. The seventh lodge from the sustainability-minded Pugdundee Safaris, the hotel was three years in the making and marks their first foray outside of Madhya Pradesh. Rustic and pared-back in design, dressed in earthy tones, the lodge offers a relaxed, unpretentious, earth-friendly stay. Fourteen independent one-bedroom cottages offer a secluded experience, each with a writing desk, indoor nooks and a sit-out, a coffee press and housemade cookies on tap, a large bathroom with a skylight and a very comfy bed for sound sleep. The restaurant—helmed by chef Michael Swamy—serves delicious regional and Continental fare made with house mixes and mostly local produce: thalipeeth and eggs at breakfast, the highlight lunch menu of Hyderabadi, Varhadi and Maharashtrian thalis. There are no TVs or WiFi (though there’s aircon and hot water). Hit the lounge for board games, nature books and wildlife DVDs, cool off in the shaded pool and walk around the property with a lodge naturalist to spot birds, foxes or dholes. Wake up at dawn for a morning safari, go on boat safaris in November, kayaking on Irai Dam, and enjoy cycling and nature trails. Doubles from Rs27,000; website -Saumya Ancheri

Limban Eco-Resort

Personally designed by its owners, architects Amala Sheth and Anand Bhagat, this brand-new 14-unit property near Tadoba’s Khutwanda Gate is
a masterful interpretation of the theme of ‘urban-rustic’. Nothing is generic about the dreamlike rooms (take your pick between cottages and tents) mounted on stilts: the tiger-stripe chests, spiral-rope lamps, walls painted with flower-and-foliage detail from the palash , sal and mahua
and rugs from Anandwan, a non-profit organisation, are guaranteed to please the most jaded bon vivant. A second powder room in each unit is a thoughtful touch given the haste of early morning safaris. In the common spaces, the rock garden-style swimming pool, Gond-inspired wall art, sofas and chairs inspired
by ploughs and even the wild gaur, and beautiful painted wheat-winnowers are all details that connect Limban to the world in which it is set. The kitchen, run by three inventive young chefs, serves up food to pique any gourmand; the Maharashtrian menu is particularly delightful. Evening tea can be enjoyed on a machan. Svasara Jungle Lodge

Located a stone’s throw from Tadoba’s Kolar Gate, this 10-acre family-owned lodge turns seven this
year. The 12-suite property has established a reputation as
the go-to place for the wildlife purist. Safari trips are enhanced
by a particular kind of sociality and owners Ratika and Sanjay Ramachandran have astutely assembled a first-rate team to meet the need of every safari-goer. In the evenings, head chef Raju serves up a range of menus, including the local Varadi cuisine, in the open-air Teak Pavilion. Special mention must be made of the staff naturalist Rishin Basu, the champion of tiger talk in Tadoba. Luxe seekers will appreciate the outdoor pool, especially on a hot summer day. Also, visitors should watch out for the regular roster of tiger-centric documentaries that are screened in the Teak House—a breezy pavilion that sits on the front lawns on the resort. Tigress@Ghosri

This elegant homestay -style property has six airy rooms glowing with natural light, of which the highlight is the two-bedroom neem-shaded cottage overlooking the forest. The other four rooms are on the main property and lead out onto a large veranda and swimming pool. Just around the corner is the property’s USP, Tiger Taka, a waterhole frequented by a wealth of wild animals who can all be sighted on camera from the house itself. Learning from visits to Kruger National Park, South Africa, and the Masai Mara, Kenya , the owners have collaborated with local villages to create a community nature conservancy, as such social initiatives are called. The conservancy is a recently forested zone outside the reserve that acts as a green corridor for animals like tigers, leopards and sloth bears to transit from one part of the forest to another. The Dhanwateys have put their conservation background to good use by organising jungle patrols and forest walks with well-trained staff—as good an education for a child as a year of school. Website ; doubles from Rs11,800

Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge

Tiger and bamboo dominate the décor of this excellent safari lodge set among bamboo groves, with nine spacious villas and three four-room chalets designed to accommodate families or large groups. Owner Sudeep Mehta has painstakingly sourced from around the world for the property (the charming pug-mark tiles on the paths are from Indonesia). But the real source of pleasure are the small, intimate back-gardens and open-to-air bathtubs in each room—the perfect place to unwind after a long day in the forest. A lake-facing gazebo is the highlight of the common areas; children can add stars to tigers with astronomy classes
at night; and the particularly beautiful and well-stocked wildlife library (with bookshelves cast from old doors from Gujarat ) offers many hours of discoveries even for this veteran bibliophile. The property’s ecological awareness extends to its vehicles: I took
a trial run in the noiseless, battery-operated jeep called the Eco Ranger, which is especially good for birding. Soon, the tiger may not be the forest’s most silent beast. Website ; doubles from Rs23,000

Irai Safari Retreat

Located close to the Irai Reservoir, the retreat offers a mix of luxurious cottages with sit-out verandas and tents with machans across its 14 verdant acres. High tea set up on
the banks of the lake at sunset was memorable, as was the ride to the location in a bullock cart—the first such ride I’d taken in many years. But too much of the food was generic (who wants Veg Manchurian in the heart of the forest) and failed to capitalise on the beautiful open-air dining pavilion. On the plus side, the library and recreation rooms are well-stocked, and the property deserves credit for asking customers not only to adopt water-saving measures when on site (all of Tadoba is drought-prone), but to extend these practices “when you go back home”. GETTING TO TATR

There are several ways to reach Tadoba, which is among the best connected tiger reserves in India.

DRIVING: Nagpur is the closest large city and is just about 100km from the Kolara Gate and 150km from the Moharli Gate. Good highways connect Tadoba to Nagpur, Hyderabad, Amravati and Yevatmal. Tourists even drive in from as far afield as Pune, Bangalore, Kolkata and Mumbai!

RAILWAYS: The nearby Railway Stations are Chandrapur, Wardha and Nagpur.

AIRPORT: Nagpur’s Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Airport, which has good connections to major Indian cities, is the nearest airport.

WHEN TO VISIT

Tadoba is in full bloom in the Spring. Palas aka the flame of the forest ( Butea monosperma ), mahua ( Madhuca indica ), kumbhi ( Careya arborea ), and ghogar – dikemali ( Gardenia latifolia ) are among the trees flowering. The golden yellow chandeliers of bahava ( Cassia fistula ) begin to attract birds and insects.

The weather may be scorching hot but the deciduous forest is shedding its leaves, improving visibility and increasing the chances of wildlife sightings. A great time to be in the jungle and watch animals come down to waterholes for a much needed drink.

Tadoba is verdant in the monsoon. Some parts of the park are open for tourism and the jungle is a sight to behold in the pouring rain. There is a surplus of food and many animals, from birds and butterflies to megafauna, produce offspring in this season.

The air is crisp in the early mornings and late evenings now. The forest is lovely in the warmth of the winter sun, and the animals too enjoy  basking in the golden light. The mating calls of male deer resound in the forests. Its a great time for birdwatching too, with the arrival of migratory birds.
