Paul Hofmann, Author and Foe of Nazis, Dies at 96

Paul Hofmann, a Viennese who resisted the rise of Nazism in his homeland, acted as an informer for the Allies while serving on the staff of the German commandants of occupied Rome during World War II and later became a foreign correspondent for The New York Times and a prolific author of travel books, died Tuesday in Rome. He was 96.

His death was announced by his son Alexander Hofmann-Lord.

A diminutive, dapper man who spoke German, Italian, French and English fluently and several other languages more than passably, Mr. Hofmann had a broad grasp of history and diplomatic affairs and an often playful curiosity.

In 1958, for instance, when Mr. Hofmann was reporting on the death of Pope Pius XII, he described how Sister Pasqualina, a German-born nun who had been the pope’s housekeeper for many years, left the papal summer residence at Castel Gondolfo bearing six warblers in a cage. One of them, Mr. Hofmann wrote, was a goldfinch named Gretel that the pope had found as a fledgling in the papal gardens and had affectionately tamed.

Such details flowed into Mr. Hofmann’s journalism and into the more than a dozen books he wrote after retiring from The Times in 1990. Books like “Roma,” “That Fine Italian Hand,” “The Seasons of Rome: A Journal” and “O Vatican! A Slightly Wicked View of the Holy See,” earned him a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable writers about modern Italy, especially about Rome.

Paul Hofmann was born in Vienna on Nov. 20, 1912, the son of a gardener. He was reared by an uncle who was a Socialist and who influenced his early politics between the world wars, when Vienna was a caldron of fiery forces: the Socialists, the Monarchists and the National Socialists, or Nazis, whose legions, formed in the late 20s, would grow powerful in the 30s.

After studying law at the University of Vienna, Mr. Hofmann became a disciple of Richard Schmitz, the leader of the Christian Socialist Party and later mayor of Vienna, who found work for him in Catholic social organizations.

In 1934, Mr. Hofmann became a traveling speaker at church-sponsored assemblies for the Catholic Popular Federation, a religious and nationalist group. Two years later he became editor and chief editorial writer of the federation’s publication, Die Sonntagsglocke.

In the late 1930s, as Austria came under immense military and political pressure to accept Anschluss, or union with Germany, Mr. Hofmann wrote editorials urging his country to resist the Nazis. The last one appeared as German troops occupied Vienna in March 1938, and he fled to Rome only hours before Gestapo agents searched his apartment.

Mr. Hofmann had another reason for choosing Rome. Two years earlier, while on a vacation there, he had met Maria Anna Tratter, whose family was from a part of the Austrian Tyrol that had been annexed by Italy after World War I. He married Miss Tratter and in 1940 their son, Ernesto, was born.

In Rome, Mr. Hofmann earned a meager living as a hotel clerk and freelance journalist. He befriended Herbert L. Matthews, The Times’s correspondent in Rome. At the suggestion of Mr. Matthews, he took a job with a German news agency, translating Italian news reports and transmitting them to Berlin. Through friends, he came to know members of the anti-Fascist underground in Rome.

With the Anschluss, Hitler had made Austria a part of the Third Reich, and Mr. Hofmann was drafted into the German Army and posted to Rome. For the next three years he was the personal interpreter for two successive Nazi commanders, Gen. Rainer Stahel and the infamous Gen. Kurt Mälzer, a brutal and imperious air force officer who styled himself the king of Rome.

From General Mälzer’s offices in the Hotel Excelsior on the Via Veneto, Mr. Hofmann passed information to the anti-Nazi underground. He was able to inform the underground about the deportation of the Jews from occupied Rome in October 1943 and the killing of 335 Italian hostages in March 1944 at the Fosse Ardeatine outside Rome in reprisal for the killing of 33 German policemen by Italian partisans.

Most of the information he passed along was what he had heard or observed. He also had access to confidential documents that he was called on to translate.

Mr. Hofmann recalled interpreting for General Stahel when he discussed with Italian officers the removal of the Jews from Rome; many of them never returned from concentration camps.

He was also the interpreter at a breakfast meeting between General Mälzer and the Italian interior minister after partisans had ambushed some German policemen on March 23, 1944. Later that day, he accompanied General Mälzer on a personal inspection of the caves at the Fosse Ardeatine, where the massacre of 10 Italians for each dead German was to take place.

Later, after the Italian hostages were killed on March 24, Mr. Hofmann gathered information over supper in the officers’ mess from German officers who had taken part in the killings and passed it on to the underground. Mr. Hofmann assumed the underground was channeling the information he gathered to the Allies.

In June 1944, as Allied forces drove closer to Rome, Mr. Hofmann left the Excelsior on a pretext, shed his German uniform, retaining only his service revolver, and deserted. He hid his wife and son in a convent and fled to a safe apartment. In November 1944, he was tried in absentia by a German military court in occupied northern Italy and sentenced to death for desertion and treason.

After Rome was liberated Mr. Hofmann served briefly with the Allied Psychological Warfare Bureau, broadcasting news reports to areas of Europe still under German occupation. After the war, Mr. Hofmann appeared as a witness for the prosecution at the war crimes trial of General Mälzer in Florence, Italy. General Mälzer was sentenced to death for his role in the Ardeatine Caves massacre, but his sentence was commuted to life behind bars and he died in prison.

By that time, Mr. Hofmann had linked up in Rome with Mr. Matthews, who was among the first correspondents to enter occupied Rome with the Allied troops. After the war, Mr. Hofmann became a news assistant at The Times’s bureau in Rome, from which he would report for the paper for more than half a century.

Mr. Hofmann alternated between reporting from Rome and covering hot spots in Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere, especially the Communist-ruled countries of the old Warsaw Pact.

Mr. Hofmann joined the paper’s metropolitan staff in 1966 and was later assigned to the Detroit and United Nations bureaus, with temporary assignments in Peru and Brazil. He became an American citizen in 1968.

In 1968 and 1969, he was assigned to Paris and reported on the negotiations there that eventually brought an end to the fighting in Vietnam. From 1970 to 1976 he was Rome bureau chief, and in 1978, he covered the “year of the three popes”: the death of Pope Paul VI, the brief pontificate of John Paul I and the elevation to the papacy of the Polish cardinal Karol Wojtyla. His wife, Maria Anna Tratter, died in 2003. Besides his sons Alexander Hofmann-Lord and Ernesto Hofmann, he is survived by one grandchild and Alexander’s mother, Christine Lord, who with Alexander cared for Mr. Hofmann after he had a stroke three years ago.

In addition to covering the news from Rome, Mr. Hofmann delighted in sketching the light, bright side of Italian life. Writing of Rome’s traffic problems in the 1970s, he said: “Julius Caesar ordered in 45 B.C. that no cart or chariot — except those carrying the vestal virgins — could enter the city of Rome between sunrise and sunset. Now, another Roman administration is planning to ban the chariots again, at least from the Eternal City’s historic nucleus, in an attempt to prevent its strangulation and destruction.”

Have you been to Moscow ? In all seriousness, they have the prettiest metro stations I have ever seen and I still can’t believe how immaculate and lovely every station was. There are several different stations pictured below and this is the second of several posts where I will show you the beauty of the Moscow Metro. Did you see part 1 ?  There really isn’t much to say because I think the pictures speak for themselves. I have so many more pictures to share with you!

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Americans who have traveled internationally stand out in their views and knowledge of foreign affairs

Do people who travel think differently about the world? A new Pew Research Center survey suggests they do.

Americans who have traveled internationally are more interested in and knowledgeable about foreign affairs, feel closer to others around the world, and favor a more active foreign policy, according to the survey of 3,576 U.S. adults conducted in spring 2023. We also surveyed people in 23 other countries about their international travel habits.

This analysis examines international travel with a focus on Americans’ travel, including which Americans travel abroad and how their interest in the world and views of international affairs differ from others.

For this analysis, we surveyed 3,576 U.S. adults from March 20 to March 26, 2023; 3,581 U.S. adults from March 21 to March 27, 2022; and 10,606 U.S. adults from June 14 to June 27, 2021. Everyone who took part in these surveys is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

For non-U.S. data, this report draws on nationally representative surveys of 27,285 adults conducted from Feb. 20 to May 22, 2023. All surveys were conducted over the phone with adults in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Hungary, Poland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. In Australia, we used a mixed-mode probability-based online panel.

Here are the June 2021 survey questions and responses used in this analysis. Those for the March 2022 survey may be found here , as well as those for the March 2023 survey .

How many Americans have traveled internationally?

Roughly three-quarters of Americans (76%) have visited at least one other country, including 26% who have been to five or more. About a quarter (23%) have not traveled internationally, though most in this group say they would if they had the opportunity.

To analyze how Americans’ travel experiences relate to their attitudes on other questions, we placed people into three categories:

• Globe-trotters have traveled to at least five other countries. About a quarter of the U.S. public (26%) falls into this category.
• Casual travelers have traveled to between one and four other countries. Half of Americans fall into this category.
• Nontravelers have never left the United States. This category includes 23% of Americans.

Compared with Americans, people in many European nations are more likely to have traveled to five or more other countries. For instance, 88% of Swedes have done so.

However, international travel is much less common in many middle-income nations. It is strongly correlated with a nation’s gross domestic product per capita. (For more on international travel and views about global engagement, read “Attitudes on an Interconnected World.” )

Who travels internationally?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, older people are more likely than younger people to have traveled internationally. Americans ages 65 and older are more than twice as likely as adults under 30 to fall into our globe-trotter category (37% vs. 17%).

Income is even more strongly related to travel than age. Two-thirds of upper-income Americans have traveled to at least five countries, compared with 9% of Americans with lower incomes.

Similarly, Americans with a postgraduate degree are far more likely to be globe-trotters than those with a high school education or less (59% vs. 10%).

Residents of suburban and urban areas generally have more international travel experience than people who live in rural areas.

There are no significant partisan differences when it comes to international travel: 26% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents qualify as globe-trotters, as do 28% of Republicans and GOP leaners.

Do travelers know more about the world?

Globe-trotters are especially likely to say they are interested in foreign affairs and follow international news. Casual travelers, in turn, are more likely than nontravelers to do so.

Globe-trotters are also the most knowledgeable about international affairs. In 2022, we conducted an international affairs quiz , asking Americans 12 questions related to international news. On average, globe-trotters got 8.2 of the 12 questions correct, compared with 6.4 for casual travelers and 4.2 for nontravelers.

Is international travel related to views of global engagement?

International travel experience is also linked to Americans’ views about international affairs and their feelings of connection to other people around the world.

When asked which comes closest to their view, 57% of globe-trotters say the U.S. should be active in world affairs, while 43% say the U.S. should pay less attention to problems in other countries and concentrate on problems at home. In contrast, most casual travelers and nontravelers say the U.S. should focus on problems at home.

In all three groups, at least half of respondents say that when the U.S. is making foreign policy, it should take other countries’ interests into account – even if that means making compromises. But globe-trotters are especially likely to hold that view.

Globe-trotters are also particularly likely to say they feel close to people around the world, with 42% saying so. By comparison, 34% of casual travelers and 30% of nontravelers say this.
