Lying on the left side of the famous Mahabodhi Temple, the Bodhi Tree is considered to be a Central Symbol In Buddhism. Also known as the Bo tree, the Bodhi tree is the sacred tree under which Lord Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. Before attaining enlightenment, Buddha meditated under this tree for more than a month. The Bodhi Tree present here today is believed to be the fifth succession of the original tree. The tree is encircled by intricately carved votive stupas, a number of Buddha statues, and chaityas. On your visit to this place, you can find many Buddhist monks sitting under the Bodhi tree, meditating or reading. Takht Sri Patna Sahib

The Takht Sri Patna Sahib i s a gorgeous, sprawling gurudwara, built on the banks of the Ganges in honour of Shri Guru Gobind Singh. The gurdwara was built in the 18th century by Maharaja Ranjit Singh as a symbol of respect and devotion to his guru. This majestic shrine with its striking white façade is one of the holiest and most sacred places to visit in Bihar. Mahabodhi Temple, Bodh Gaya

The Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya is perhaps the most important Buddhist temple in the world. It is built on the exact spot where it is believed that Gautama meditated and attained moksha and became the Buddha. The magnificent temple has been constructed to honour this moment in history, while keeping a Bodhi tree under which the Buddha sat, intact beside the temple. The Mahabodhi Temple is 55 metres high and is built over an area of 4.8 hectares. The original version of this temple was built by King Ashoka, which has since been replaced with a bigger, more intricate structure. You can see a beautiful golden statue of the Buddha inside, made entirely of black stone. Glass Floor Bridge, Rajgir

One of the most exciting architectural marvels coming up in Bihar is the Glass-Floor Bridge, a massive skywalk whose specialty is its transparent floor. The bridge is supposed to be around 85 feet in length and 6 feet wide. The bridge is being constructed in the midst of five picturesque hills in the Rajgir area of Bihar.

Up to 40 tourists can be accommodated on the bridge at the same time, who can observe the surrounding natural beauty through the clear glass floor and the surrounding open spaces on the bridge. Vishnupad Temple, Gaya

As its name suggests, the majestic Vishnupad Temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Vishnu and houses a 40 cm long footprint of the Lord, which is sheltered by a silver plated basin. This footprint signifies the act of the Lord subduing Gayasur into the surface of the earth by placing his feet on his chest. Inside the Vishnu Temple, you can also find several other shrines, dedicated to Lord Phalgwisvara and Lord Narasimha. Built back in 1787, Vishnupad Temple is one of the most important places of worship for the Hindus in Gaya and one of the many famous places to visit in Bihar. According to popular mythological beliefs Lord Rama had visited this place with Mata Sita. - The present shrine was remodelled in 1787 by the ruler of Indore, Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar. - For the construction of the temple, Ahilya Bai Holkar had sent her officers to fetch the best stone of the region and they returned with Munger Black Stone. - As there wasn’t any good road and the mountains were located far away from Gaya, the officers of Ahilya Bai Holkar found another mountain near the village of Bathani to carve and easily get the stones to Gaya. - Highly skilled craftsmen were brought from Rajasthan to build the Vishnupad Temple, keeping the footprint of Lord Vishnu in the centre. Architecture: - The 30 meters high Vishnupad Temple features 8 rows of carved pillars that support the pavilion. - This east-facing octagonal temple is made of huge blocks of grey granite attached together by iron clamps. - The 100 meters tall pyramidal tower features sloping sides with alternately plain and indented sections that are set in such a way that they make for an array of peaks joined at the top.

Jal Mandir, Pawapuri

Located in Pawapuri, the Jalmandir is dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, and is a very important pilgrimage destination for the Jains. This place is the same site where Lord Mahavira was cremated after he attained moksha in 527 BC. Standing true to its name, Jal Mandir is completely surrounded by water on all four sides and is considered to be one of the best places to visit in Bihar. The temple is built in the form of a chariot with white marbles and has a footprint of Lord Mahavira. The temple is connected to the bank by a long bridge, through which it can be accessed. At the age of 30, he became an ascetic. - During Chaturmas and between the months of Āṣārh (22 June To 22 July) and Kartik (October/November), the Jain nuns and monks stay at one sacred place and preach the teachings of the religion to the local people. Architecture: - Translating to "Temple In Water" in English, Jal Mandir is made of white marble and set within a water tank, which measures around 84 Bigha. - The water surrounding the temple is covered with beautiful lotuses with the chariot-shaped temple sitting in the middle. The water is home to many fish that are fed by the devotees and priests of the temple. - The temple is connected to the bank of the water tank by a 600 feet long stone bridge. - During moonlit nights, Jal Mandir shines brightly offering a breathtaking sight to behold.

Established back in 1957 by the combined effort of Buddhist monks and the government of Thailand, the magnificent Thai Monastery aims at preaching the philosophies of Buddhism. The architecture of the monastery and the customs and rituals practiced here offer a deep insight of the rich Thai culture. The temple flaunts a curved sloping roof adorned with stunning golden tiles. The Thai Monastery is also home to a 25 meters tall intricately carved bronze statue of Lord Buddha, which rests in the garden of the temple. Kesaria Stupa, East Champaran

As its name suggests, Kesariya Stupa is a majestic Buddhist Stupa lying in Kesariya in the Champaran district of Bihar. Constructed under the commands of emperor Ashoka, Kesaria Stupa happens to be the biggest and tallest Buddhist stupa in the whole world. The stupa is built at the same site, where  Lord Buddha  donated his begging bow during his last days. Adorned with a myriad of impressive Buddhist statues, this stupa is a brilliant epitome of traditional Buddist architecture. Certain parts of this stupa are in their ruins as a result of the invasion made by Muslim rulers in the times gone by. Bihar Museum, Patna

The Bihar Museum is a popular attraction in Patna that gives visitors an insight into Bihar's past while instilling pride and reverence in the hearts of  Young visitors. Further, this museum has been a  recent addition to the list of attractions. Meanwhile, the century-old Patna Museum ran out of space, and thus, this was one of the key reasons to build the museum and to display the artifacts. Hence, the Bihar Museum is where tourists should visit to find information about Bihar's past. This fascinating museum in Patna dates back to 1917 when it was constructed. These stunning historical caves are some of the oldest manmade relics in Bihar, dating back to the 3rd century BCE. Most caves at Barabar consist of two chambers, carved entirely out of granite, with a highly polished internal surface, the "Mauryan polish" also found on sculptures, and exciting echo effects. Barabar Caves consist of a group of four different caves namely, Lomas Rishi, Visvakarma, Karan Chaupar and Sudama. It is believed that King Ashoka commissioned the construction of these caves when he was erecting monuments all over his kingdom to spread the knowledge of Buddhism. Today, you can explore the beautiful internal chambers, check out some ancient Hindu and Jain sculptures and marvel at the architectural genius that went behind constructing these caves. Kanwar Bird Sanctuary, Begusarai

The Kanwar Bird Sanctuary is one of the most beautiful tourist places in Bihar, home to the largest freshwater oxbow lake in all of Asia. The Park was established in 1987, to protect the local wildlife and ecosystems and covers an area of 63.11 sq. km. More than 100 species of migratory birds, as well as indigenous specimens, have made their home in this sprawling sanctuary. Some of the most beautiful birds that you can spot here include the Purple Rumped Sunbird, the Red Wattled Lapwing, the Crested Serpent Eagle, the Spotted Owlet, Magpie Robins, sparrows, kites, vultures and much more. You can also find several small animals like squirrels, foxes, langurs and more on the premises of the park. It is the most ideal place for nature-lovers, birdwatchers and avid photographers. Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary, Bhagalpur

The  Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary  is spread over 50-60 km in the middle of the Ganges, with its borders ranging from Sultanganj to Kahalgaon Hill. The earliest university in the world was established in Bihar. The name Bihar is a derivative from Vihara , which means ‘monastery’. 1. Nalanda University

The university had 2000 teachers who taught over 10000 students from all parts of the world. Bodhi Tree is located about 100 km from Patna . Buddha achieved enlightenment under this tree and hence it is a pilgrim center for Buddhists who hail from all parts of the world. The place where it is situated has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO .  On your visit to Bodhi Tree, you will find Maha Bodhi Temple , which is sacred to those who follow Buddhism. The architecture of the temple goes to show the richness and grace of Indian architecture.

3. Muchalinda Lake

Muchalinda Lake acquires the name after Shesh Naga or the Snake King Muchalinda who protected Buddha during a storm while he was into the sixth week of meditation. Muchalinda protected Buddha from the rising waves and in honor of his services; the place was named after him. You could find the sculpture depicting the hood protecting Buddha who is in the state of meditation on snake coil. The green trees by the lake and the lush greenery make it the most frequented tourist spot in Bodh Gaya .

4. Griddhakuta Peak

Griddhakuta Peak is famously known as the vulture peak . Located in Rajgir, the peak resembles the shape of vulture and it is frequented by vultures in great numbers. Buddha delivered some of his famous sermons here and hence it is considered sacred for Buddhists. The steps formed by cutting rocks lead you to two caves that are naturally formed. For those who find the trip physically challenging, chairlift facilities are available to reach the hilltop.

Hot springs in Rajgir are famous tourist spots. Located at the foot of Vaibhava Hills, the springs get their water from Saptadhara , which passes behind Saptaparni Caves . The hot springs are considered to possess medicinal properties. Among the hot springs, Brahmakund spring is the hottest and has a temperature of 450 Celsius . It is believed that Lord Buddha and Mahavira had bathed in these hot springs.

The ancient fort situated in Buxar along the Ganges River was constructed in 1054 AD . The carvings found in the fort offer amazing views and the construction of the fort is outstanding. Situated in the town of Rajnagar near Madhubani in Bihar, the palace was built in the 17th century A.D. by Maharaja Rameshwar Singh of Darbhangha . It suffered extensive damage caused by an earthquake in 1934 , and sadly wasn’t rebuilt after. Situated near the kamala river is a marble temple of the goddess kali, and it’s still widely visited, another temple of the goddess Durga forms an integral part of the palace, and is still in operation, also known as the Rajnagar palace complex, it’s one of the major tourist attractions in Mithila and people come to visit all year round.

8. Hieun Tsang Memorial Hall

Built in memory of the famous Chinese scholar and traveler Hieun Tsang , the construction is rich in architecture. Hieun Tsang spent more than 12 years in this place on his visit to India. This was the place where Hieun Tsang learnt yoga under the guidance of Acharya Shil Bhadra . The famous traveler has thrown light on medieval India and Nalanda, which are found in the memorial hall.

9. Jalmandir Temple

Jalmandir Temple is situated in the middle of a lake, which is full of lotuses. King Nandivardhan , who was the elder brother of Lord Mahavira is said to have constructed the temple. The temple is in the shape of a Vimana . The place where Lord Mahavira attained Samadhi and the place he was cremated are marked in the temple. The 600 ft long bridge made of stone connects the temple to the banks of the pond.

Patna Museum was constructed in 1917 . The building is a blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture, it is one of the most popular places in Patna . The museum houses archaeological objects, paintings, sculptures and images by artists belonging to Hinduism and Buddhism. The museum also has a 200 million old fossil of a tree. Rajgir was the first capital of the kingdom of Magadha, until the 5th century BC when Udayin (460-440 BC), son of Ajatshatru, moved the capital to Pataliputra. Rajgir was the birthplace of the 20th Jain Tirthankara Munisuvrata and closely associated with the Arihant Mahavira and Gautama Buddha. Set in a green valley and surrounded by rocky hills, Rajgir is a spiritual town with natural serenity in the form of dense forests, mysterious caves, and springs. Vishwa Shanti Stupa, Rajgir Hot Springs, Venu Van, Ghora Katora Lake, Veerayatan Museum, Swarna Bhandar, Bimbisar Jail, The Cyclopean Wall, Ajatshatru Fort, etc., are some of the top places to visit in Rajgir. Rajgir Dance Festival is one of the major and important events celebrated in Rajgir.

4. Vaishali

Vaishali or Vesali was once an ancient city and is now an archaeological site near Basarh, Bihar. About 55 km from Patna, it is one of the popular Buddhist Pilgrimage places in India and among the must include places in Bihar Tour Packages. Gautama Buddha preached his last sermon before his death in c. 483 BC, then in 383 BC, the Second Buddhist council was convened here by King Kalasoka, making Vaishali an important place in both Jain and Buddhist religions. 5. Barabar Caves

At a distance of 31 km from Gaya, and 42 km from Bodhgaya, Barabar Caves are the ancient Buddhist caves located at Barabar near Gaya in Bihar, India. These are the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, and among the most-visited places in Bodhgaya. Situated on the twin hills of Barabar and Nagarjuni, Barabar Caves are a set of 7 rock-cut-caves dating back to the 3rd century BC, during the Maurya period. These rock-cut chambers bear dedicatory inscriptions which informs that the four caves on Barabar hill were assigned by King Ashoka to Ajivika monks in 261 BC. Another inscription on the Nagarjuni hill is of the grandson of King Ashoka, Dasaratha Maurya, which tells that the Ajivikas continued to enjoy imperial Mauryan patronage for long. Out of the 7 caves, the Barabar Hill houses 4 caves and the Nagarjuni Hill is having 3 caves. Carved out of granite, the caves on Barabar Hill are named as Karna Chaupar, Lomas Rishi Cave, Sudama Cave, and Vishwamitra Cave. The cave of Lomas Rishi is probably the most famous of the caves of Barabar, because of its beautifully carved door. It is on the southern side of Barabar Hill and is adjacent to Sudama cave, which is on the left. Lomas Rishi consists of two rooms- a rectangular room, and a circular, semi-hemispherical room. At a distance of 13 km from Nalanda, and 21 km from Rajgir, Pawapuri, or Pawa is a sacred place located near Nalanda in Bihar. It is one of the prominent holy sites for Jains in India, and among the popular places to visit in Nalanda. Pawapuri is considered as one of the major pilgrimage centers in India amongst Jain followers as it is the land where Lord Mahavira took his last breath in 527 BC. The name Pawapuri means a town without sins. Dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, the Jal Mandir, or Water Temple in Pawapuri marks the place of his cremation. The temple was originally built by King Nandivardhan, the elder brother of Mahavira. It is one of the five main temples in Pawpuri, where the 'Charan Paduka' or foot impression of Mahavira is deified. Jal Mandir is built in white marble within the water tank that measures 16.8 acres. The water surface of the lake is covered with lotuses. This architecturally elegant temple in the form of a 'Vimana' or chariot has the footprint of Mahavira for worship. A 600-foot-long (180 m) bridge built in stone connects the temple with the bank of the pond. The temple shines bright and sublime during a moonlit night. 7. Ramchaura Temple

At a distance of 37 km from Vaishali, Ramchaura Mandir is a sacred Hindu temple situated in the Hajipur town of Bihar. It is one of the popular and among the must-visit places near Vaishali. Ramchaura Mandir is dedicated to Lord Ram and it is said that the temple has been there since the time of Ramayana. Also, it is believed that Lord Shri Ram has visited this place on his way to Janakpur, due to which this place has great religious value for the Hindu populace. The temple is built where the footprint was embossed on the ground. The Ramchaura Mandir has a tradition of celebrating Rama Navami, the birth anniversary of Rama, every year with full zeal and enthusiasm. Also, a small fair is organized during Rama Navami. Bihar is one of the most exciting and alluring destinations to visit in India. Located to the north of the country, it is rich in culture and ancient sites . From its cities to the small towns and villages, there are many places to visit in Bihar. It is famous for its colourful festivals and deep-rooted customs and values.

The state has a long and rich history. It was known as the kingdom of Magadha, home to many famous dynasties, such as the Mauryans and the Guptas. Pataliputra (modern-day Patna), the capital, is one of the  oldest continuously inhabited places in the world .

How to reach Bihar

The state of Bihar is well connected to all the other Indian states.

Patna is connected to all the major Indian cities by air. There is also the internationally connected  Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport. Bodh Gaya also has  international flights to Bangkok (Thailand) and Paro (Bhutan), mostly for to Buddhist pilgrims.

Trains reach the capital, Patna, from almost every other Indian state. The Patna Rajdhani Express arrives from Delhi, the Jan Shatabdi from Kolkata, the Rajendra Nagar Lokmanya Tilak Express from Mumbai, and the  Sanghamitra Express from Bangalore.

Bihar is well connected by road. The National Highways NH 2, 19, 28, 30, 31 connect to all the other corners of the country. There also buses from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Kolkata.

There are lots of famous historical and natural places to visit in Bihar. Here are some of the most popular.

Natural Destinations

• Valmiki National Park  — located at the India-Nepal border, this is the only National Park in Bihar. The pristine forest and wild Himalayan landscape are filled with tigers, rhinos, elephants, and leopards
• Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan — this large zoological park and garden in Patna has a pond, a kids’ play area, and a small train all set in a lush landscape.
• Barabar Caves — the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, mostly date back to the Mauryan Empire. Some even have Ashokan inscriptions.
• Griddhakuta Peak — also known as “Vulture Peak,” this mountain in Rajgir has historical connections with Buddha and Buddhism.
• Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary — this sanctuary is a haven for over 60 species of migratory birds and is located in Begusarai.

Cultural Sites

• Mahabodhi Temple —  this Buddhist Monastery is said to be where Buddha attained enlightenment. Located in Bodh Gaya, this sprawling and serene place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Nalanda University — dating back to the 5th century BC, the ruins of this university were once  an educational hub for Buddhist learning . One of the world’s oldest universities, it was sacked by Muslim invaders in the 12th century.
• Vaishali — another important Buddhist and Jain pilgrim destination, this ancient city has one of Ashoka’s many lion pillars. Both Buddha and the Jain leader Mahavira are said to have frequented the place.
• Emperor Sher Shah Suri’s mausoleum — this imposing Afghan style domed, brick tomb was built for in memory of Emperor Sher Shah Suri, Pathan from Bihar.
• Rajgir  — a pilgrimage destination for Buddhists, Hindus, and Jains, Rajgir has many historical sites, caves, shrines, and temples.

Interesting facts about the state

Bihar boasts a rich cultural heritage which is primarily associated with Buddhism and Hinduism. It is filled with myths and stories about kings, princes, and sages.

• Art : Bihar’s renowned Madhubani School painting is famous around the world . The people are also skilled at  stone pottery, appliqué work, wall hangings, and leather goods.
• Local Bihari food : there are many delicious dishes you should try in Bihar. Some of them are Pittha, Litti, Dhuska, and Khaaja.
• Festivals : the people of Bihar celebrate many vibrant festivals. Among them are  Chaath, the  Sonepur Fair, as well as the Rajgir, Vaishali, and Buddha Mahotsavs.
