What does an upside-down pineapple mean on a cruise ship?

Ashley Kosciolek

There are lots of codes in cruise culture – "alpha" codes to signal onboard emergencies, numerical codes printed on your keycard to represent your cabin number and even codes for the names of the vessels themselves. But, perhaps no code is met with as much side-eye as the pineapple and what it stands for, particularly if it's upside-down.

What do upside-down pineapples mean when you see them on a cruise ship? Read on for more about their hidden message.

What does an upside-down pineapple mean on a cruise?

When I think of pineapples, I associate them with all things tropical — mainly pina coladas by the pool. But, for people who are swingers — couples who switch partners for the purpose of having physical relations — upside-down pineapples serve as a subtle way to indicate that they're part of that lifestyle, thereby making it easier for potential partners to find them.

Where might I see upside-down pineapples on cruise ships?

pineapple cruise meme

Upside-down pineapple indicators can be subtle (think pineapple sunglasses or nail art) or more in-your-face in the form of tattoos, cabin door decorations and, of course, clothing — everything from swimsuits and trunks to trousers and button-down shirts.

Are there swingers cruises?

Yes. There are several companies — including Bliss Cruise, Temptation Cruises and Desire Cruises — that charter ships for the purpose of hosting swingers cruises exclusively for people who are engaged in the lifestyle. Those types of sailings often include racy entertainment, workshops and even playrooms, in addition to regular cruise activities and port calls.

Although nude cruises are a different type of chartered voyage, some swinger cruises are clothing-optional.

What else should I know?

If you see an upside-down pineapple on a cruise, it doesn't always mean that someone is a swinger. In some instances, pineapples are simply a symbol of hospitality, particularly in the South and in Hawaii.

So, if you find yourself on a voyage out of Galveston, Texas ; Mobile, Alabama; or one of Florida's many ports, or if you're booked on a Hawaii cruise , think twice. Pineapples on someone's attire might just mean they liked the look of the shirt, shorts or bathing suit they're wearing.

The bottom line is that you should use discretion when making a determination about a pineapple's meaning when you see it in the wild — or on a cruise ship.

The Upside down pineapple on cruise ships, a hidden meaning explained!

What do the upside down pineapples on cruises mean.

So you’re wandering down the halls of your fantastic cruise – and you see all the wonderful cabin door decorations , and the oddly placed pineapple catches your eye. It makes you curious about what an upside-down pineapple means when you see it on a cruise ship, doesn’t it?

The upside-down pineapple is not just another tropical fruit, it is a secret symbol that originated as a code for swingers or “partner-swapping”. In this article, we will explain the upside-down pineapple meaning and how the symbol originated. We will also discuss whether it is a common sight on a cruise ship, and what you should do if you want to avoid any awkward interactions.

Understanding the Upside-Down Pineapple Symbol

The secret symbol of an upside-down pineapple is used on cruise ships to indicate someone’s openness to swinging or partner swapping. Typically, guests interested in swinging will attach an illustrated and upside-down pineapple to their cabin door, but some use the symbol more subtly by wearing an upside-down pineapple pin or simply wearing clothing with a pineapple print.

It is important to note that not everyone who wears clothing with a pineapple print is involved in swinging. Because sometimes a pineapple is just a pineapple! 🙂

However, an intentional upside-down pineapple print on clothing is usually a strong sign that someone is part of the swinging community.

The Origin of the Upside-Down Pineapple Symbol

While the exact origin of the upside-down pineapple symbol is unclear, it has been used for many decades across a wide range of vacation destinations, not just on cruise ships. Pineapple decor is common on cruise ships, as they are associated with the tropics and a fun lifestyle. Additionally, pineapples in many cultures represent hospitality, so don’t confuse the simple presence of a pineapple with someone looking for “extra hospitality” 🙂

Given that like-minded swingers needed a way to secretly identify themselves to other swingers while in public and on vacation, it only makes sense that they chose a pineapple as the unofficial symbol. An upside-down pineapple motif is subtle enough that it would not offend anyone who did not know what it meant, but to those in the know, it is an announcement of one’s intentions and sexual preferences.

Is the Upside-Down Pineapple Symbol a Common Sight on a Cruise Ship?

While the upside-down pineapple can be seen on any cruise ship, there are now cruises tailored towards swinging and other types of “adult fun”. With the rising popularity of these cruise vacations, the need for placing an upside-down pineapple on one’s door has become less important. Simply put, adults can now choose cruise vacations where they do not need to be so subtle.

With that said, do not be surprised if you see the odd reference to an upside-down pineapple, such as a pin, badge, or tattoo, as it still has its place in cruise culture. If this is something you want to avoid, you should not have to worry if you book a family-friendly cruise rather than one that is adults only. The swinging community prefers adults-only cruises.

Should You Avoid Wearing Clothes That Have Pineapples Printed on Them?

Wear what you want! Don’t avoid your favorite pineapple print swim suite because you’re worried about being labeled (or mislabeled). But if those swim trunks are adorned with the upside-down variety, you want to play it safe, and leave your favorite upside-down pineapple swim suit or t-shirt at home the next time you pack for a cruise vacation. However, if you feel you cannot go without your trusty pineapple shirt, you should not have to worry about any overly awkward encounters.

The truth is, anyone in the swinger community knows that not everyone wearing pineapple clothing is involved in swinging, and they will not approach someone unless they are sure that they are interested. Additionally, if someone is wearing pineapple clothing without realizing its association with the swinging community, it is unlikely that anyone will approach them. Easy enough, right?

But if you do want to participate with subtle pineapple apparel, check these out:

The meaning of pineapples on cruise cabin doors?

So this is a great question, sort of like above when it comes to clothing. It’s hard to know if someone that just has a pineapple decoration on the door is inviting others to the party, or if they just like pineapples. This one always confuses me. I think it’s obvious if there are upside-down door decorations, but what about the seemingly normal pineapples on a cruise cabin door? Here’s a real head-scratcher on a recent cruise:

Either these folks just like pineapples, or they couldn’t find a way to hang this bad boy upside down 🙂

Final thought

The upside-down pineapple is a symbol that has been used for many decades by the swinging community to identify themselves to other swingers while in public and on vacation. But this fabulous fruit is also a sign of hospitality, with no hidden meanings. So remember, sometimes a pineapple is just a pineapple, and some people just like pineapples…. but when they’re turned on their head, now you know what that means!

The Hidden Meaning of Upside Down Pineapple on Cruise (2024)

upside down pineapple on the door of a cruise cabin

Cruise ships offer a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and also some unexpected social interactions . One intriguing aspect that has caught the attention of many cruisers in recent years is the upside-down pineapple on the cruise ship doors. But what does this symbol mean?

I’ll explain it to you and tell you how this “custom” has evolved in 2024 .

Table of Contents

The Secret Language of Pineapples at Sea

For some naive people, a pineapple might seem like a simple tropical decoration , but it actually carries a hidden meaning in the cruising world. The upside-down pineapple is a discreet symbol used by some cruisers to indicate their participation in the swinger lifestyle, a community that embraces partner swapping and open sexual exploration .

This symbol has its roots in the broader historical context of pineapples as a sign of hospitality and luxury. However, it takes on a more specific connotation on cruise ships, helping like-minded individuals identify each other without drawing unnecessary attention.

Although, now that the meaning of this symbol has spread to other passengers, the value of its use has been somewhat lost. In fact, I must admit that it is being used less and less, specifically because it is no longer a secret signal.

The Pineapple Code: where should you put it?

This symbol has become so famous, especially because it is so easy to use. It might appear as a magnet on a cabin door , a sticker , or, more rarely, even as a playful accessory on one’s person, like a pineapple-themed piece of clothing . This allowed swingers to signal their interest in encountering others who share their lifestyle in a subtle yet practical way.

Misconceptions and Respectful Conduct

A thing that I really want to underline is that not everyone displaying a pineapple may be up for it. Many cruisers are completely unawar e of its connotations and remember that people use it purely as a fun decoration. Moreover, it’s always important to remember to approach others with respect and discretion, as the swinging community really values privacy and consent.

Is it a growing trend in 2024?

The phenomenon of swinging on cruise ships is reflective of a broader trend , where people seek out unique experiences and connections while on vacation. As I said before, however, it seems that this symbol is falling into disuse . However, I’ve noticed that I’m seeing more and more ads for swinger-specific cruises organized by specialized agencies. For example, the ones organized by theswingercruise.com , an agency that offers optional clothing cruises with erotic entertainment, sexy theme nights, and DJs.

Pineapples have long been a symbol of hospitality and friendship. In fact, in the past, pineapples were often given as gifts to guests as a symbol of welcome and hospitality. Over time, the pineapple’s symbolism has evolved, often used by people to convey a message of friendship and camaraderie.

Hospitality

The pineapple has a long-standing history as a symbol of hospitality. In many decades of the 17th and 18th centuries, pineapples were considered a luxury item because they were not easy to come by and required many resources to grow. As such, they became a symbol of wealth and prestige, often served as a centerpiece at formal gatherings and presented to guests as a sign of hospitality.

Good Fortune

Throughout history, pineapples have been connected to good fortune due to their symbolic representation of wealth and prosperity.

During this time, pineapples were a luxury commodity transported from their native Caribbean islands to Europe .

Their rarity and exotic nature made them highly prized, and they quickly became a symbol of power among European aristocrats. Often, pineapples were displayed prominently at feasts and events as a show of wealth and prestige.

In fact, during colonial times, a ripe pineapple was often used as a symbol of alliance or friendship in politics. Leaders would exchange the fruit as a sign of goodwill and commitment to working together.

What is the significance of an upside-down pineapple?

The secret symbol associated with upside-down pineapples in the swinging lifestyle refers to swingers who are “open to play.” It is often displayed in various forms, standard accessories including pineapple-themed clothing, door-knockers, and tattoos. Its popularity surged with the rise of the Internet, which allowed for more accessible communication and the spread of information.

What is the historical background of the upside-down pineapple and its connection to swinging?

It’s uncertain how the upside-down pineapple became a secret, unofficial symbol for swingers . However, it is believed to have emerged during the 1970s swinger culture when like-minded adults would signal to each other that they were open to sexual encounters, a relationship, or wife swapping.

It’s thought that the upside-down pineapple became a discreet identifier because, on the surface, it appeared to be a simple yet elegant decoration. Still, those in the know would recognize its true secret meaning.

Today, swingers use the upside-down pineapple in various forms to signal their openness to play. Swingers have used real pineapples outside their cruise ship cabins and hotel room doors at land-based resorts, campgrounds.

They have used illustrated motifs on their cabin door doors and handles. Some swingers even wear pineapple shirts or pineapple-themed clothing or have tattoos.

Is the upside down pineapple symbol commonly seen on cruise ships?

While pineapples may be a popular décor item on cruises , it’s not common to see the upside-down pineapple symbol used as a secret sign for swingers.

This is especially true on regular cruises that cater to families and couples. Most passengers likely need help understanding the symbol’s meaning, and using it in such a public setting wouldn’t make sense.

Instead, swingers often use dating sites to connect with other swingers and like-minded couples rather than relying on the pineapple’s symbolism. While some may still use the pineapple as a symbol to identify themselves, it once was more common.

It’s worth exploring other symbols or signals swingers may use to identify each other, such as pink flamingos. Yes, Pink Flamingos is another secret sign.

You may also find other symbols or codes more prevalent in the swinging community today. It’s important to note that not all swingers use symbols or codes, and some prefer to keep their lifestyle completely private.

Does Clothing with Pineapples on it Automatically Identify Someone as a Swinger?

The answer is no. While pineapple clothing may be a strong sign that someone could be involved in the swinging community, it’s not a definite indicator. Every day, many individuals wear clothing with pineapples on them without having any associations with pineapple meaning the swinger lifestyle.

Is it recommended not to wear clothing with pineapple prints?

pineapple with brown sunglasses

Although wearing pineapple clothing at swinging party doesn’t necessarily mean you’re part of the swinging community, it’s understandable that some may feel uncomfortable and want to steer clear of it.

There’s always the possibility of an awkward encounter or mistaken assumptions if someone unfamiliar with the swinger code approaches you based solely on your clothing.

However, if you still want to wear your favorite pineapple clothes, there are ways to do so while being prepared for any potentially uncomfortable situations.

You can politely explain the meaning behind the symbol if questioned or brush off any assumptions made by others without needing to disclose your personal lifestyle choices.

What other symbols are used to identify swingers?

woman sitting on a unicorn pool float

While the upside-down pineapple has gained widespread recognition as a symbol of the swinging lifestyle, it is not the only symbol used for this purpose on cruise ship .

Various jewelry pieces can also signal to others that someone is a part of the swinger community, with anklets, toe rings, and thumb rings being the most obvious way common examples.

You may even see the occasional upside-down pineapple tattoo as you stroll on an open cruise ship deck. A Flamingo and Pink Flamingoes have also been reportedly used as secret symbols to find like-minded people for parties and sexual partners, partner swapping on cruise ships and elsewhere.

A Black Ring

Some in the swinger community also use a black ring to signify their lifestyle. Usually made of either metal or rubber, this black ring is worn on the right middle finger and can signal to others that the wearer is part of the swingers’ scene.

Unicorns, also known as single ladies, are growing in the swinger community . While not part of a couple, these women still seek out sexual encounters with couples and other single swingers.

Unicorns often use symbols to identify themselves, such as a black ring on the left middle finger or a necklace with an upside-down pineapple hanging from it.

Garden Gnomes

Garden Gnomes have recently become a subtle symbol associated with the swinger lifestyle. While garden gnomes are often seen as a decorative items in many gardens, they are also used to indicate that the homeowner is part of the swinging community.

Strong Emoji Usage

Stay on the lookout for the strong usage of pineapples and unicorns, and you may find swinging couples or unicorn-seeking couples for play. This is often most used on dating apps but may spill over into other social interactions.

The Juicy Tale Of The Upside Down Pineapple On A Cruise Ship

by Judith Eve | Jun 21, 2023 | Cruise Planning & Cruiser Lifestyle

pineapple cruise meme

What's the deal with the upside-down pineapple on a cruise ship? You may think it's a result of a clumsy fruit juggling attempt or a curious décor choice, but sit tight because we're diving deeper into this fruity mystery! I have always been curious about this, and I am sure you are too!

Pineapple: More Than Just a Delicious Fruit

To the untrained eye, an upside-down pineapple might look like a juicy mishap. But here's the twist: it’s a secret symbol used by folks in the swinging lifestyle. Just as Batman has the Bat-Signal, swingers have... well, the Pineapple-Signal !

The symbol is often found casually displayed in various corners of the ship - it could be a pineapple-themed accessory or a pineapple discreetly placed upside-down outside a cabin door. Picture someone casually lounging by the pool with an upside-down pineapple next to them. Are they just eccentric fruit lovers or are they sending a secret message? Now you're in the loop!

History of the Upside-Down Pineapple on a Cruise Ship

For many decades, the upside-down pineapple has been used as a symbol of hospitality, warmth, and friendship in various vacation spots, in particular on cruises. While its origin remains uncertain, it is speculated that the pineapple may be rooted in the cultural significance of pineapples representing those noble sentiments.

Swinging, or partner-swapping, is a consensual non-monogamous sexual activity that involves couples engaging in sexual activities with other couples. While the practice is not new, it gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s. During this time, swinging was often considered taboo and was not openly discussed. Therefore, swingers had to find creative ways to identify each other.

One theory is that the upside-down pineapple on a cruise ship was used as a code for swingers. When a couple hung an upside-down pineapple outside their cabin, it was a signal to other swingers that they were open to swapping partners. The symbol was discreet and easily recognizable, allowing swingers to identify each other without drawing attention from non-swingers.

Over time, the upside-down pineapple on a cruise ship has become more widely known as a symbol of swinging. However, it is important to note that not all couples who hang an upside-down pineapple outside their cabin are swingers. Some may simply be fans of the tropical fruit or use the symbol as a decoration.

In recent years, other symbols have also been used to indicate swinging on a cruise ship, such as pink flamingos. However, the upside-down pineapple remains the most common symbol associated with the practice.

Wearing Pineapple Clothing and Accessories on a Cruise Ship

Wearing clothing and accessories with pineapples on a cruise ship has become a popular trend in recent years. However, it is important to note that the upside-down pineapple symbol is often associated with the swinging community. So, if you wear pineapple clothing or jewelry on a cruise ship, you may unintentionally send a message that you are open to swinging activities.

That being said, wearing clothing with pineapples or pineapple prints can still be a fun and fashionable way to embrace the tropical vibes of a cruise ship. Pineapple anklets, toe rings, and thumb rings can add a cute touch to any outfit. Pineapple door knockers and other pineapple decor can also make for great souvenirs to bring back home.

It is important to note that wearing pink flamingo clothing or accessories on a cruise ship can also have a similar connotation as the upside-down pineapple symbol. Pink flamingos are often associated with couples looking for other couples to swing with. So, if you want to avoid any misconceptions, it may be best to steer clear of pink flamingo clothing and accessories as well.

Decorating Stateroom Doors with Pineapple Decor

Decorating stateroom doors with pineapple decor has become a popular trend among cruisers. It is a fun way to add some personality to the otherwise identical stateroom doors. Pineapples have become a symbol of hospitality and welcome, making them an ideal choice for cruise ship door decorations.

Experienced cruisers know that finding your stateroom door can be a challenge, especially when the corridors are long and identical. Decorating your door with pineapple decor can help you easily identify your stateroom among the many others.

There are various ways to decorate your stateroom door with pineapple decor. Some popular options include:

  • Pineapple magnets: These are easy to attach and remove, making them a convenient option for cruisers. They come in different sizes and designs, allowing you to choose one that suits your style.
  • Pineapple door hangers: These are a great way to add some dimension and texture to your stateroom door. They can be made from different materials such as wood, metal, or fabric.
  • Pineapple stickers: These are a simple and affordable option for decorating your stateroom door. They come in different sizes and designs, so you can choose one that fits your door.

It is important to note that there are rules and guidelines for decorating stateroom doors on cruise ships. Most cruise lines allow door decorations as long as they do not damage the door or leave any residue. It is best to check with your cruise line for their specific policies on stateroom door decorations.

The Upside-Down Pineapple and Awkward Interactions on a Cruise Ship

The upside-down pineapple symbol has been used on cruise ships as a discreet way to indicate a couple's openness to swinging or partner swapping. However, not everyone is aware of this hidden meaning, which can lead to some awkward interactions.

For example, a couple may innocently hang an upside-down pineapple ornament on their cabin door as a decoration, not realizing that it may be interpreted as a signal for swingers. This can lead to unwanted advances or uncomfortable conversations with other passengers who are familiar with the symbol's meaning.

Wearing an upside-down pineapple pin or patch may seem harmless to a single person, however it can lead to unexpected and awkward interactions as many may mistakenly assume they are looking for a swinging partner. This confusion can cause a variety of misunderstandings.

It is important to note that not all cruise ship passengers are familiar with the upside-down pineapple symbol and its meaning. Therefore, it is recommended that those interested in swinging or partner swapping use other means to discreetly signal their intentions, such as attending designated events or using specific dating apps.

Overall, it is important to be respectful of others and their boundaries while on a cruise ship. Misinterpreting or misusing the upside-down pineapple symbol can lead to uncomfortable situations and awkward interactions.

I have been on many cruises, and I have seen many upside down pineapples on cruise ships. What I have seen the most are magnetic upside down pineapples on cabin doors. I suppose they were inviting a certain type of company over. Happy cruising!

Whether it’s an urban myth or a true hidden meaning, cruise passengers will want to be aware of the not-so-secret code of the upside down pineapple.

Whether you’re into the “lifestyle” or not, this is especially helpful for cruisers who enjoy decorating their cruise cabin door or wearing pineapple motif cruise wear.

What Does an Upside Down Pineapple Mean On a Cruise Ship?

An upside-down pineapple is a secret code people use to let other cruisers know they are swingers. If you’re not familiar, the swinging “lifestyle” includes engaging in group sexual activities or partner or “wife-swapping”.

The upside-down pineapple symbol might be worn on a t-shirt, swimsuit, tote bag, badge or pin. Placing an upside-down pineapple decoration outside their cruise ship cabin door can be an invitation to join a swinger party. The meaning of upside-down pineapples is not limited to cruise ships, and can be seen in communities, resorts, campgrounds and more.

What Are The Origins of the Upside Down Pineapple?

upside-down-pineapple-cake

Pineapples have held various symbolic meanings in different cultures throughout history, often associated with hospitality, prosperity and friendship. So, how did the upside down pineapple come to be?

When it comes to the origin of the upside-down pineapple, there are two different theories behind its history.

Some believe that the upside-down pineapple originated in Hawaii. Hawaii is a state that is known for its pineapple plantations and pineapple upside-down cake.

The upside-down pineapple cake is a delicious dessert and a symbol of hospitality, which is served to guests when they visit.

Europe During the Renaissance Period

Others believe that the upside-down pineapple originated in Europe during the Renaissance period. At the time, the upside-down pineapple was a symbol of welcome.

Over the years, urban legend has it that people began to use an upside down pineapple as a discreet symbol between those who were into a swinger lifestyle.

Even if pineapples are a symbol of welcome and hospitality, the upside-down pineapple has a different meaning today. Since we now have the internet and social media (including Facebook and TikTok), admittedly this is less of a secret as people share their experiences online.

Why is the Upside Down Pineapple Associated with Swinging?

upside-down-pineapples-on-a-cruise

For swingers, pineapples are symbolic of friendship, openness and new connections, which lends itself well to this alternative lifestyle.

Its hard to pinpoint the exact time swingers adopted the upside-down pineapple as a symbol or secret code. However, urban legend has it that swingers have been placing an upside-down pineapple in their grocery shopping carts for years, to let others who were into the lifestyle know.

Nowadays, it is easier than ever for swingers to find like-minded people. If you want to be part of the swinging community, you can join swinger Reddit forums or post a pineapple emoji in a swinger Facebook group.

Another way to identify swingers is if they are wearing upside-down pineapple merchandise. It is common for swingers to wear upside-down pineapple clothing, an upside-down pineapple badge, or other upside-down pineapple signs.

Is Swinging on a Cruise Ship a Big Thing?

Yes and no. Swinging is a big thing on certain cruise ships. In fact, there are “lifestyle cruises” designed for cruise swingers and adult fun. On regular cruises, there may still be open-minded passengers who are open to swinging.

However, the truth is that you won’t likely notice any swinging behavior unless you are looking for it.

To the average person, swingers won’t make their lifestyle choice obvious. In fact, beyond the upside down pineapple, there are more discreet swinger’s symbols. Wearing a toe ring, a black ring on the right hand, a wedding ring on the right hand or a woman wearing an anklet are secret symbols that signify the swinging lifestyle.

While on your cruise vacation, you may also notice an upside down pineapple sticker or pineapple magnets on a cruise cabin door. This can be a secret sign to let other cruise ship passengers know they are welcome to join.

How Often Do You See Upside Down Pineapples on a Cruise Ship?

Unless you’re on a swingers cruise or if you are really looking for them, you won’t see upside-down pineapples very often on a cruise ship. You may see a stateroom door decorated with an upside-down pineapple or pink flamingos . However, it is pretty rare.

There are plenty of other subtle signs swingers use to express their lifestyle. However, the most common symbol is the upside-down pineapple. For the most part, you won’t notice other swingers unless you are looking for them.

Does Clothing With Upside Down Pineapples Mean Someone Is a Swinger?

pineapple-clothing-cruise-ships

Although swingers wear pineapple print clothing, it is possible that someone wears pineapple print clothing without knowing its true meaning. To avoid any awkward interactions, you may want to avoid wearing cruise t-shirts and clothing with pineapples on it.

There is a story of a TikTok user and travel creator named “lindajeanw” who wore matching pineapple bathing suits, along with her husband, while on vacation. She did not know the hidden meaning behind the upside-down pineapple, and she said that people were “extra nice” to them.

It’s important to note that when you see someone wearing pineapple clothing on a cruise vacation, its likely they are not swingers and are not aware of the true meaning of the upside-down pineapple. Since pineapples are tropical fruit, it is very common for them to be featured on vacation attire.

Should I Avoid Wearing Pineapple Printed Clothing?

There is nothing wrong with wearing clothing with a pineapple motif. However, it’s important to understand that some people may make assumptions about you, especially if those pineapples are upside down.

If you’re wearing a t-shirt or a pair of shorts with a small pineapple, most people won’t notice. However, if you’re dressed with pineapple prints all over your outfit, there is a good chance that you will get some funny looks.

Unless you are engaging in swinging, you should avoid clothing with an upside-down pineapple symbol.

How to Connect With Swingers on a Cruise

If you are looking to partner swap on a cruise, there are Facebook groups and forums on Reddit to connect with other swingers on your particular cruise sailing. If there are a lot of swingers on the same sailing, there may be a swinger party for open-minded couples to meet.

Another way to meet like-minded cruise passengers is to wear an upside-down pineapple shirt. The upside-down pineapple is a code that tells other swingers that you are open to sharing.

The Upside-Down Pineapple Trick

upside down pineapple trick on cruise ship

The upside-down pineapple trick is a prank people may play on others by turning pineapple decorations or other objects upside down on their doors.

While this can definitely be a funny joke, especially if you’re cruising with friends, it might lead to some potentially awkward moments as well.

To do the upside-down pineapple trick, you’ll have to purchase pineapple magnets, door decorations or a sticker. When your friend is in their stateroom, you will put the magnet or sticker on their door.

If it’s your friend’s first cruise, they most likely won’t know what the upside-down pineapple signifies, so that they won’t question it. After a few days, you can tell your friend what it means, or you can wait for them to receive a friendly knock on the door!

Another variation of this prank is to purchase your friend a pineapple t-shirt for the cruise vacation. While your friend is wearing the T-shirt, there is a good chance they will get some funny looks.

These pranks are probably harmless, and can be a great way to have some fun on your cruise holiday. However, do use your judgement, so as not to cause offense or distress unintentionally.

How Do Cruise Ship Swingers Identify Themselves?

The upside-down pineapple is the unofficial symbol swingers use as a secret way to identify themselves to other swingers on a cruise ship. If you see an upside-down pineapple on clothing, a cruise ship door, or accessories, there is a good chance it’s a swinger.

Although it’s not super common, swinging still occurs on cruise ships. There are Facebook groups and Reddit forums where swingers will arrange a private swinging party before their cruise ship sailing.

This way, it’s easier to meet up with like-minded people once they are onboard the cruise ship.

Other Symbols Swingers Use To Identify Themselves:

In recent years, the upside-down pineapple became a very popular and well known symbol. These days, many cruisers understand its true meaning.

Since swingers like to be discrete about their lifestyle, they have adopted new ways to identify themselves. In fact, according to rumors, this includes the adoption of the pink flamingo.

Here are the other symbols swingers use to identify themselves:

  • Black ring on the right-hand ring finger
  • Pink flamingos
  • The “Queen of Spades” Symbol
  • Thumb Rings

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a pineapple unicorn mean on a cruise.

A pineapple unicorn is a term used by couples looking for single women to sleep with. This term is popular among the swinging community. So, if you’re ever in a cruise Facebook group and you see someone making a post that says they are “looking for a unicorn,” you know now know what it means.

Generally, swingers use discreet terms like “pineapple” and “unicorn,” so it does not draw attention to their lifestyle choices.

Where Will You Find Upside-Down Pineapples on a Cruise?

On a cruise, passengers can find upside-down pineapples on cabin doors, clothing, and accessories. The upside-down pineapple is the most common way to identify swingers on cruises and on land. At land-based resorts, swingers will decorate their doors with pineapple decorations or place a real pineapple in front of it.

According to Reddit, a game some cruise passengers will play at night is trying to find rooms with upside down pineapple decorations on the doors. So, the cruise passengers will walk past every stateroom on the ship and count how many upside-down pineapples they see on cruise cabin doors.

Do Cruise Lines Know About The Upside-Down Pineapple?

Although cruise lines don’t advertise the upside-down pineapple lifestyle, they certainly know it’s a thing! Since the upside-down pineapple has become such a well-known symbol among cruisers, some cruise lines have acknowledged it.

A question people often ask is, “Is Virgin Voyages a swinger cruise?” . Virgin Voyages is an adult only cruise, and some people can be into the swinging lifestyle. However it’s not an official swingers cruise. In our experience on Virgin’s Valiant Lady cruise ship, this wasn’t something we noticed.

P&O is a cruise line in particular that has referenced the upside-down pineapple on several occasions. They have an upside-down pineapple drink and upside-down pineapple bags in their gift shop, and they use pineapple signage at their “Guilty Pleasures” party.

At one time, the upside-down pineapple was a secret symbol. Now, many cruisers know about it, and it has become the subject of many jokes in the cruise community.

What Does An Upside Down Pineapple Mean On A Cruise Ship Cabin Door?

by Prof. Cruise · September 23, 2022

A door with an upside-down pineapple on it and a shocked face. Text that reads: What Does An Upside Down Pineapple Mean On A Cruise Ship Cabin Door?

I had the strangest text exchange with my husband, Mr. Cruise, this morning. He asked me to look for an insulated bag of some sort to keep frozen the takeout milkshakes he’s going to pick up on the way home from our son’s basketball practice tonight (he’s a keeper). So I root around in the coat closet and find this bag covered in upside-down pineapples:

An insulated bag covered in upside down pineapples.

And here’s how the text exchange went from there:

Me (it’s good it was over text or my tone would have come off as slightly accusatory): Where did this upside-down pineapple bag come from?

Mr. Cruise: Gigi [who is my mother-in-law] left it here.

Mr. Cruise: What?

Me: Do you think she knows what it means?

Mr. Cruise: EYE didn’t know what it meant. I just googled it. OH GAWD! Why does Gigi have an upside-down pineapple bag? And how do YOU know what it means?

Which brings us to the following, today’s lesson:

Cruise Ship Cabin Door Decorations: A Cautionary Tale

I haven’t decorated my cabin door since my first cruise to Hawaii when I covered my door in these cute, Hawaii-themed, seemingly innocent  pineapple magnets , faced in all different directions:

pineapple cruise meme

Well after opening my door to four different gentleman who gasped and said “never mind” upon seeing my face covered in room service chocolate cake and my kid jumping on the bed, I figured something was amiss and googled, “what does a pineapple on a cruise ship door mean?”

Remember that show, “Wife Swap” (it was Mr. Cruise’s favorite show for reasons I still can’t fathom)?  Well it’s like that except instead of platonically exchanging wives with dramatically different lifestyles, you all share the same “lifestyle” which involves swapping partners for S-E-X.  And I guess an upside-down pineapple on your door means you’re, I dunno, ripe and ready?

So the lesson here is that hanging upside-down pineapples on random cruise ship doors would make for an awesome prank. And with that…

Class Dismissed.

What Does an Upside-Down Pineapple on Cruise Ship Door Mean?

An upside-down pineapple on a cruise ship can have a different meaning than an upright one.

So what is the meaning of an upside down pineapple on a cruise or elsewhere for that matter?

The most common interpretation of an upside-down pineapple is that it’s a sign that the occupants of the cabin are open to meeting other couples for ‘adult fun’.

What Does Upside-down Pineapple Mean Sexually ?

In other words, an upside-down pineapple is a secret code used by swingers to find each other on cruise ships.

While there are cruises specifically for swingers, it’s not uncommon for people in committed relationships to seek out partners for wife-swapping or partner-swapping on regular cruises.

Of course, not everyone who sees an upside-down pineapple will interpret it sexually in this way.

Some people may simply think it’s a quirky decoration or a sign that the owners of the cabin are fun-loving and up for a good time.

However, if you’re on a cruise and you see an upside-down pineapple, it’s worth bearing in mind that it could be a sign that the occupants are open to some extra-curricular activities and a potential invite to a swingers party.

Where Might You See Upside Down Pineapples?

According to people living the lifestyle upside down, pineapple might be used in various instances to drop hints they are in the lifestyle.

For example, they might feature the design in their clothing or accessories.

Or perhaps place the pineapple upside down in a shopping cart.

They are displayed in swingers’ porches, mailboxes, door knockers, or doormats.

However, these days the pineapple swingers’ symbols are more often displayed in dating apps and social media profiles and posts 🍍 .

Of course when on a cruise, swingers will most commonly hang an upside-down pineapple magnet, stickers, and other forms of decoration on the cruise door.

Upside Down Pineapple Joke

Never assume an upside-down pineapple on a stateroom door is an open invitation.  Even when used legitimately, it’s simply to start a conversation amongst like-minded people.

You also have to bear in mind some people will unwittingly display a pineapple upside-down just for the fun of it or as part of a practical joke they might be playing.

There’s also the possibility someone could be using it to play a joke on someone and turn people’s upright pineapples upside down for a laugh.

What’s the Origin of Upside Down Pineapple Swinging?

The term “swinging” was first used in reference to sexual activity in the 1960s at the time of the sexual revolution , and swinging started to become more mainstream.

Swingers are defined as couples who engage in sexual activities with other people outside of their relationship.

While there is no definitive answer to how or why the pineapple became a symbol for swingers, there are a few theories.

One theory suggests that because pineapples are often found in tropical climates, they came to be associated with paradise and relaxation – two things that are definitely conducive to a good time.

Another theory claims that the pineapple became a symbol because it is a fruit that is shareable, just like partners in a swinging relationship.

This is backed up by the fact that in many cultures, the pineapple is seen as a symbol of hospitality and welcome, which would make sense given that swingers are often hosting parties.

Upside Down Pineapple

Why People Swing?

People engage in partner-swapping or wife-swapping for a variety of reasons. Some people enjoy the thrill of meeting new people and exploring new sexual experiences, while others see it as a way to add some excitement to their current relationship.

Is Swinging on Cruise Ships Common?

According to a 2018 study , approximately 2.35% of Americans identified as swingers.  So approximately 1 in 43 people.

Amongst cruise ship passengers, the percentage of swingers is likely to be very similar.

So on a large cruise ship, you might expect the following passenger to swingers ratio (if 2.35%)

  • 4000 passengers estimate 94 swingers
  • 5000 passengers estimate 117 swingers
  • 6000 passengers estimate 141 swingers

Of course, these are just rough estimates.

Whether that 2.35% are more likely to engage in swinging as part of enjoying their vacation will vary amongst the couples themselves, although its well-known sex drives generally increase when on vacation.

People are more in the mood to let their hair down amongst strangers they will unlikely to see again and with whom they can have some fun.

There are of course, specific lifestyle swingers cruises they could book if they really wanted it to be part of their vacation.

As a non-swinging passenger, there is nothing to worry about as you are very unlikely to come across any swinging activity or parties because even if it is going on it will be behind cabin doors.

What a Upright Pineapple on Cruise Door Meaning?

The pineapple is a tropical fruit that is a common symbol associated with a warm sunny climate which one might experience on a summer vacation.

In the past, a pineapple displayed in the home has been a symbol of luxury and wealth . This is because pineapples were expensive to import and cultivate in the 17th and early 18th centuries.

In architecture and homes, the pineapple is often seen as a symbol of welcoming hospitality.

On a cruise ship, whether on clothing, a drink, or a cruise ship door they are just that, an exotic symbol or decoration.

Below you can see a pineapple is just one of many decorations on the cruise cabin door:

What Does Pineapple Clothing Mean?

Clothing with pineapples on it can have a number of different meanings or none at all.

For some, it may simply be a fashion statement or a way to show their love of the fruit or simply the dress design or Hawaiin T-shirt design of choice chosen with total disregard for any hidden meanings.

For others, it may be a way to show that they are fun-loving and easy-going.

It could also be interpreted as a sign that the person is looking for a fun and casual relationship.

There’s also the possibility it could be used as a fun conversation piece between people who know the various possible meanings.

Some people specifically look for Upside Down T-shirts like the one below:

You might also spot some passengers wearing upside-down pineapple accessories including:

Upside Down Pineapple Drinks

Some cruise lines serve drinks in a very elaborate upside-down pineapple drinks glass.

For example, see the frozen pineapple Daiquiri cocktail below.

In these instances, it’s just a very creative exotic design with no hidden meaning because they are served to everyone like this on regular cruises. Although perhaps they know it will be a talking experience for some and add to the enjoyment of the drink.

What Other Swinging Symbols are There?

There are various other symbols that may also indicate someone is into the swing lifestyle which can add extra clues if you see them with upside-down pineapples on cruise doors and elsewhere.

Swingers symbols

Pink Flamingoes: These are lesser-known symbols representing possible swingers and another sign you might see on a cruise ship door.

Unicorn: A unicorn symbolizes a single woman.   The unicorn represents the rarity of a single woman in the swinging scene.  Most swingers are couples with no shortage of single males.

Black Ring On Right Hand: This is an additional sign the person might be into swinging.  Opinions vary on which specific finger should wear it.

Black Ring on Thumb: This can be a sign the wearer is a lesbian.

Wedding Ring on Right Hand: Is potentially a way for couples to hint they may be swingers.

Anklet Bracelets: This can be a sign of the woman being in an open relationship.

Even more of a sign if it features an upside-down pineapple.

Please note that all the above meanings are only possible between a small group of like-minded people and all-inclusive meanings for every general public member.

Anyone may choose to use any of the above purely because they like the design, decoration, or fashion and many people do.

So don’t worry if you inadvertently like to wear any of the above, swingers aren’t going to start randomly approaching you and if they ever did it would be very subtle and chances are they would quickly realize the symbol holds no such meaning to you.

Other Sexual Pineapple Meanings:

Pineapples also feature in a number of other sexually related meanings:

Dirty Pineapple: A lady with a lot of coarse pubic hair.

Dirty Pineapple: A man having sex with a woman through the hole of the pineapple.

Unveiling the Hidden Symbolism of the Upside-Down Pineapple

Upside-Down Pineapple: Have you ever wondered what an upside-down pineapple meant when you saw it? Then you are not by yourself. An upside-down pineapple is not merely a comical piece of décor or an error, despite what you may think; it’s a code word meaning something extremely particular.

You’ve come to the perfect spot if you’re not sure what it signifies and want to discover its secret meaning!

What does an upside-down pineapple mean?

The upside-down pineapple secret symbol is frequently used on cruise ships as a code for “wife-swapping” or swinging. Typically, a painted, inverted pineapple is affixed to the cabin door of a visitor who wants to swing and switch partners.

The most overt way for people to indicate that they are amenable to swinging is to pin an upside-down pineapple to their cabin door, while other cruise and resort visitors employ the symbol in more subtle ways.

They might wear an upside-down pineapple pin or just wear a Hawaiian blouse with a pineapple motif instead of pinning an upside-down pineapple to their cabin door.

In other words, any cruise passenger who has an obvious upside-down pineapple anyplace on them is likely utilizing it as a means of announcing that they are willing to trade sexual partners.

You may notice that some partners have identical tattoos of upside-down pineapples, which is as clear an advertisement as you’ll ever see.

Top Tips and Methods for Preventing Seasickness on a Cruise

Why is the Upside Down Pineapple Associated with Swinging?

The upside-down pineapple symbol has been used for many years in a variety of vacation spots, not just aboard cruise ships, however, its original origins are unknown.

Because pineapples are linked to the tropics and an exciting lifestyle, they are frequently used as décor on cruise ships. It makes sense that swingers chose a pineapple as the unofficial symbol since they sought a means to covertly identify themselves to other swingers when out in public and on vacation.

An upside-down pineapple pattern is not overt enough to upset someone who does not understand its meaning, but for those who do, it is a declaration of one’s intentions and sexual preferences.

The pineapple is used on land as well, although aboard cruise ships it is most commonly recognized by the upside-down pictorial motif on the cabin door. Real pineapples may even be positioned outside of rooms in on-site resorts.

How common is it for cruise ships to have swingers?

pineapple cruise meme

Special swingers cruises, when all passengers are searching for the same thing, are an option for couples who are especially looking for “cruise ship swinging.”

If that’s what you’re after, two of the most well-liked options are Bliss Cruises and Couples Cruises. Additionally, travel agencies with a focus on swingers can assist you in planning your ideal getaway.

Many swingers take conventional cruises in addition to the so-called “lifestyle cruises.”

You won’t ever notice any swinging on a typical cruise.

It is uncommon for someone to explicitly declare their goals for public consumption. And even more uncommon is the person who declares themselves to be a swinger.

Swingers can be distinguished in a few ways despite their discrete nature.

They could consist of:

  • A pineapple tattoo
  • Wearing a pineapple pin upside down
  • Upside-down pineapple door decorations
  • A thumb ring

Is it Typical to See the Upside Down Pineapple Symbol on Cruise Ships?

Couples

Even though every cruise ship has the iconic upside-down pineapple, some now provide swinging and other forms of “adult fun” on their itineraries.

The necessity of posting on one’s door has diminished with the growing appeal of these cruise trips. Put simply, adults no longer have to be so subtle while selecting cruise trips.

Having said that, be prepared to encounter the occasional allusion to an inverted pineapple in the form of a button, badge, or tattoo; cruise culture still incorporates them.

If you choose to book a family-friendly cruise instead of an adult-only one, you shouldn’t have to worry about this if it’s something you wish to avoid. The hipster crowd is partial to adult-only cruises over ones with kids.

Does Anyone Wearing Pineapple-Red Clothing Become Immediately Identifiable as a Swinger? Pineapple-themed apparel has undoubtedly been used by swingers to identify one another, but many others wear prints without realizing it.

Having said that, wearing a swimsuit, hat, shirt, or bikini emblazoned with one or more upside-down pineapples is typically a pretty clear indication that the wearer is a part of the swinging culture.

Some items of apparel are a tad more revealing…

Pineapple-Printed Clothing

The next time you pack for a cruise, you might want to consider leaving your beloved upside-down pineapple shirt at home just to be safe. This will help you prevent any confusion and awkward interactions.

Nonetheless, you shouldn’t have to worry about any extremely awkward situations if you feel that you cannot leave your go-to shirt behind. In actuality, most swingers are quite understated since they are aware that not everyone who wears pineapples is aware of the symbol’s deeper significance.

If addressed, the interaction usually consists of an individual or a pair introducing themselves and being unduly amicable.

The scenario will resolve itself quickly and without major awkwardness, after they realize that you are simply wearing a piece of clothing with a pineapple design that has a different significance for you, rather than announcing your plan to engage in any kind of adult conduct.

Exist Any Other Symbols for Denoting Swingers?

Although the inverted pineapple is a commonly used code of conduct among swingers on cruise ships, it’s not the only one.

Women frequently accessorize with anklets, toe rings, and thumb rings, particularly when traveling. Additionally, wedding bands are worn on the right hand rather than the left by both men and women.

A black ring is among the most popular accessories for swingers, particularly while they’re on vacation. There’s a strong probability someone is seeking fun if you notice they have a pineapple anyplace on their attire and a black ring on one of their fingers.

Although the upside-down pineapple is frequently used as a code word for wife-swapping, swinging, and swinger parties, don’t let it bother you every time you see it when you’re on a cruise!

A pineapple is just a tropical fruit in most situations, but if there are any indications that swingers are around, you should stay away—unless, of course, you’re up for a swinger party!

Ever spotted an upside-down pineapple on a cruise ship and wondered what it means? Let’s peel back the history and discover the juicy details behind this quirky tradition.

Spoiler alert: it’s all about hospitality and making new friends on the high seas, but not in the way you think.

Table of Contents

What Does An Upside Down Pineapple Mean?

An upside down pineapple is more than just a playful decoration. It is seen as an invitation for others to engage in a ‘swinger’ lifestyle.

While swinging is not exclusive to cruises, it has become a discreet means of communication while on board.

Swinging, sometimes known as “the lifestyle,” refers to non-monogamous relationships where couples explore various forms of sexual interaction with other individuals or couples.

To help identify other like-minded individuals, symbols such as the upside down pineapple are used.

Now, let’s consider how the pineapple itself became associated with swinging:

  • Historically, the pineapple has symbolized hospitality and warmth.
  • In the 17th and 18th centuries, pineapples were a symbol of luxury and were considered status symbols due to their rarity and difficulty to grow.
  • By displaying an upside down pineapple, it is believed to signify a couple’s willingness to welcome others into their space and offer the warmth and hospitality associated with the fruit itself.

While you may be intrigued by this symbol and the secret lifestyle it represents, it’s important to remember that there is no guarantee you will encounter this on every cruise ship.

Upside down pineapples can be displayed for a number of reasons and might not always be an indication of swinging.

So, as you enjoy your cruise adventure, always proceed with respect and understanding toward your fellow cruisers.

Origins And Symbolism Of The Upside Down Pineapple

Why is the upside down pineapple associated with swinging.

The upside-down pineapple has long been a symbol of hospitality, but over time, it has become associated with swinging, especially in the cruise ship community.

It is believed that displaying an upside-down pineapple signals that the person or couple is open to swapping partners or engaging in other swinging activities.

This association is thought to have started with the idea that turning the pineapple upside down represents a break from the traditional hospitality meaning, transforming it into a sign of open-mindedness and adventurousness in the realm of relationships and sexuality.

What Is The Origin Of The Upside Down Pineapple?

The origins of the upside-down pineapple as a symbol for swinging are not entirely clear. Some sources suggest that it began with military personnel using the pineapple as a discreet way to signal their interest in such activities.

Others believe that it may have originated in the tropical resort community, where pineapple-themed decorations were common, and the upside-down variation slowly gained its alternative meaning.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding its origins, the upside-down pineapple has undeniably become a modern symbol for swinging, particularly within the cruising community.

Are Any Other Symbols Used To Identify Swingers?

Yes, there are several other symbols and signs that have been used throughout the years to discreetly identify swingers or those interested in the lifestyle. Some of these include:

  • Black rings worn on the right hand
  • Pampas grass displayed outside a home
  • Garden gnomes with specific accessories, such as a key or swing

It’s important to note that not everyone who uses or displays these symbols is necessarily a swinger or aware of their alternative meanings.

Always approach these situations with respect and open communication.

Swinging On Cruise Ships

Pine apple in a Hand: Featured In Upside Down Pineapple Symbol & Meaning on a Cruise

Many people embark on cruise ships to enjoy a luxurious and relaxing vacation.

While you might be aware of various activities and entertainment options available on board, you may be surprised to learn about a unique subculture – swinging on cruise ships.

Is Swinging On A Cruise Ship A Big Thing?

While swinging may not be the primary reason for most passengers to board a cruise ship, there is a niche community that does engage in such activities.

However, it’s essential for you to know that swinging on a cruise ship is not a widespread or mainstream practice.

But it isn’t unheard of to see a couple of upside down pineapples as you leave your room.

How Do Swingers Identify Themselves On Cruise Ships?

Swingers, like any other close-knit community, have their ways of identifying themselves on cruise ships. One of the symbols often used by swingers is the upside-down pineapple.

This might be displayed on clothing, accessories, or even as a door decoration. Some people may even use an upside down pineapple pin on their clothing.

When you see an upside-down pineapple, it might indicate that the person or couple is open to swinging.

Is The Upside Down Pineapple Symbol A Common Sight On A Cruise Ship?

Considering that swinging on cruise ships is a niche activity, the upside-down pineapple symbol is not a very common sight.

However, you might occasionally encounter this symbol while on a cruise, particularly on adult-only or lifestyle-specific cruises .

It’s important to remember that not every upside-down pineapple is necessarily an indicator of swinging, as it could also be a simple fashion choice or decoration.

The person may be completely unaware of the hidden upside down pineapple meaning.

Is Swinging Common On Cruise Ships?

Swinging is not a common activity on the majority of mainstream cruise ships. However, some specialized cruises cater to couples interested in alternative lifestyles.

These cruises might have specific themes or events that encourage swinging, with guests fully aware of the cruise purpose.

So, while swinging on cruise ships is not a widespread practice, it does exist within certain communities, and using signs like the upside-down pineapple can help like-minded individuals connect while aboard.

As you enjoy your cruise vacation, it’s essential to be aware of and respect different communities and their unique interests.

Spotting Swingers

What about wearing pineapple clothing.

While wearing pineapple clothing has become a popular trend, it doesn’t always mean someone is a swinger.

However, there are instances where pineapple clothing, accessories or even a pineapple-themed door decoration on a cruise ship can signify that someone is open to the swinging lifestyle.

If you are a swinger, you should approach such situations with discretion and respect, as not everyone wearing pineapple-themed items is a swinger, and assumptions can lead to awkward situations.

How Will I Spot A Swinger On A Cruise Ship?

There are a few subtle signs you can look for when trying to spot a swinger on a cruise ship. Aside from pineapple clothing, some additional signs might include:

  • A couple wearing matching pineapple attire
  • Pineapple accessories, such as jewelry, pins, or bags
  • A door decoration featuring a pineapple

Does Clothing With Pineapples On It Automatically Identify Someone As A Swinger?

No, clothing adorned with pineapples does not automatically label someone as a swinger. Pineapples have become a popular fashion trend and can be found on clothing, accessories, and home decor.

It’s important to consider context when spotting potential swingers on a cruise ship, and never assume someone’s lifestyle choice based solely on their attire.

Keep in mind that while some individuals may use pineapple-themed items to signal their interest in the swinging lifestyle, not everyone who wears or displays such items is part of that community.

Always remember to treat others with respect and discretion, as assumptions can lead to uncomfortable situations.

Of course, there are some items of clothing that are blatantly obvious to be a sign for swingers.

You can find some people who don’t want the upside down pineapple meaning to be misinterpreted, so their clothing items are very… obvious.

Take a look at some items you can wear if you want to make sure other swingers can spot you:

Upside Down Pineapple T-Shirt

This Upside Down Pineapple T-Shirt with the slogan ‘if you know, you know’ is one of the most obvious ways to identify others interested in cruise ship swinging. You can buy the shirt here .

Should You Avoid Wearing Clothes That Have Pineapples Printed on Them?

You absolutely don’t have to avoid wearing pineapple print clothing.

Of course, since an upside down pineapple is considered a secret symbol for swingers, if you want to err on the side of caution and avoid wearing these items, you can.

However, it is not a widely recognized symbol. And most people won’t be aware of the hidden meaning.

If being approached by a swinger makes you uncomfortable, then you may want to not wear the clothing item. But in most cases, people wear pineapple prints and it isn’t a big deal.

Should You Turn A Pineapple Upside Down?

Turning a pineapple upside down would be a much more direct way of getting attention from swingers.

If you want to join the community and be approached or invited to a swinger party on a cruise, you can turn a pineapple upside down.

You can also put the symbol on your cruise cabin door and turn it upside down.

Summary: What Does An Upside Down Pineapple Mean?

An upside down pineapple is a secret symbol for swinging and partner swapping. Although swingers are a relatively small community, there are normally a couple of them on cruises looking to have some adult fun.

The secret code is known among those that partake in the lifestyle, and whether it’s clothing or placing it on the cabin door, you will likely get approached by other swingers.

Cruise ship passenger discovers what upside down pineapple signs on doors mean

Cruise ship passenger discovers what upside down pineapple signs on doors mean

People have been left in stitches after a TikToker didn't know what the 'little cute pineapple' signs on cruise travellers' doors meant.

Poppy Bilderbeck

Poppy Bilderbeck

Question is, will you be as puzzled by this view as she was?

Indeed, my innocent mind would probably have guessed the upside down pineapple signs stuck on the doors of people's cabins had something to do with Spongebob SquarePants , infamous for living in a pineapple under the sea.

However, the naive and unsuspecting mind clearly doesn't belong on an adults only cruise.

And little did Blogionista Travels suspect just how far above PG her experience would be.

The TikToker was on her first adults only Virgin Voyage cruise.

Blogionista Travels has used her platform to document her experience onboard her very first cruise ship.

While she's given her followers a helpful insight into the interior of the ship and the sightseeing which can be done from onboard, little did she know how varied the 'on boat activities' could truly get.

In one of her updates, the TikToker shared a video walking down the hall past people's cabins, noting 'everyone has these little cute pineapples on their door'.

Blogionista Travels asked her followers what the 'little cute pineapples' were.

However, her followers were quick to let her in on the not-so-secret secret.

"It means, drop-ins are most welcome...and bring friends," one said.

Another wrote: "Ohhh noo noo noo no no."

A third was much more on my wavelength. They said: "It’s just 'Lives in a pineapple under the tree' theme."

A final commented: "They want to be friends. Good friends."

Basically, if you hadn't got it already, the pineapples are a symbol used by swinger parties to identify each other.

As soon as Blogionista realised the pineapple stickers are basically a question of whether, as one user put it, she 'like[s] Pina coladas and getting tag teamed in the rain?!' she made a follow-up video.

Replying to the user who commented, 'Ohhh noo noo noo no no', and using the original footage, she joked: "When it's your first cruise and you meet a nice couple onboard that invites you to their cabin for drinks."

Blogionista admitted in the comments she had 'only just discovered what [the pineapple's] mean'.

"Lmao my mom and her husband didn't know about this and they wore pineapple shirts on their cruise. my mom was (and is still) mortified," another user wrote.

While Blogionista may have been embarrassed to realise just what the 'little cute pineapples' were, at least she didn't make the mistake another TikTok user did and get the symbol tattooed on herself without realising its true meaning.

No regrets and all that.

What Exactly Does An Upside Down Pineapple Mean?

What does an upside down pineapple mean?

You might be shocked to learn that pineapples aren’t just a sweet tropical fruit.

The upside-down pineapple symbol is sometimes used as a secret code by swingers searching for a swinger party on their cruise ship (and it may be more obvious than you think – ever seen an upside down pineapple pin?)

Read on and let’s find out how this all came about and the hidden secrets of this juicy fruit and exactly what does an upside down pineapple mean?

Introduction

We’ve researched the history, origin, and uses of the upside-down pineapple and other symbols associated with the swinging community.

Our information comes from swinger’s forums, research articles, and personal accounts of encounters with swingers.

Swinging, also called partner swapping or wife swapping involves couples in a committed relationship seeking out a third party to engage in certain ‘bedroom’ activities. The third-party can be in the form of another couple or a single person.

The association between upside-down pineapples and swingers has become an open secret online, with several sources warning unsuspecting parties about the symbol’s meaning.

The humble pineapple fruit

There’s even upside-down pineapple swinger merch on Amazon.

While there are cruises specifically for people who are swingers, it’s not uncommon for them to seek out partners on regular cruises. The symbolism will go over most couples’ heads, but they wear their pineapple upside down in hopes of finding couples who know the meaning of the upside-down pineapple meaning.

This article teaches you everything you need to know about the upside-down pineapple meaning. We will tell you the upside-down pineapple symbol’s meanings, origins, and implications.

What Does It Mean To See a Pineapple Upside down on a Cruise?

There are several meanings associated with upside-down pineapples. Here are some of the things that the upside pineapple means.

For some pineapple-swinging couples, it’s a way of broadcasting that they’re interested in swinging. They may place a pineapple decor piece upside down on the door of their room to indicate a swinging party occurring inside their room, or couples may wear pineapple clothing to indicate that they’re looking for a third.

Pineapples on cruise ship cabin doors

Apart from this adult pineapple meaning, The things an upside-down pineapple means are also associated with several other things. An upside-down pineapple often gets used as a symbol of good fortune.

Pineapples were also once a symbol of wealth because the elite could only buy real pineapples. People tied the upside-down pineapple to royalty in the past because they were the only persons allowed upside-down fruit.

Now, upside-down pineapple decor means that someone welcomes you to their home.

Can You Tell Me the Origin of Upside Down Pineapple?

We can’t tell you the exact origin of the upside-down pineapple becoming a secret symbol for swingers. Still, we can give you a history lesson on its usage, both as an identifier for discrete swinger parties and in pop culture.

There’s some debate about if people first used the upside-down pineapples in Europe or Hawaii. Still, it’s agreed that it initially got used as a symbol of hospitality in both cases.

Pineapples are the national fruit of Hawaii. The recipe for pineapple upside-down cake originated there, so the pineapple fruit, upside down or upright, will always be associated with Hawaiian hospitality.

Pineapple upside down cake

The pineapple meaning that ties the upside-down pineapple to hospitality is one of the reasons the upside-down pineapple was selected as the secret symbol for persons interested in wife swapping. Swingers need to be friendly and accommodating enough to let other people in their relationship.

Another reason swingers chose pineapples is that they tend to be associated with a tropical environment connected to freedom.

Originally, swingers placed an upside-down pineapple in their grocery trolleys to search for other swingers. This story caused pineapples to become associated with swinging in the mainstream.

The next, more legitimate step in connecting the pineapple fruit and swinging is that swingers began placing an upside-down pineapple on their mailboxes to show that a swinger’s party was occurring in that house.

The idea that a pineapple upside-down meant eventually swinging reached cruise ships—couples who wanted to engage in partner swapping put upside down pineapple signs on their doors or hung them from handles.

The symbol was an indication to other swingers who knew the upside-down pineapple meant that the couple in that room was also a swinger, and they were looking for some fun. Just knock!

The first use of the upside-down pineapple online was in 2006 on Urban Dictionary, and the first time it was defined as being a symbol for a swinger was in 2017. We can reasonably assume that the upside-down pineapple started being associated with cruise ships in 2008 because the first swinger’s cruise occurred.

Many people currently speak about how swingers use upside-down pineapple symbols on sites such as TikTok, so it’s likely that the pineapple will evolve from a discrete symbol to common knowledge.

Is the Upside Down Pineapple Symbol a Common Sight on a Cruise Ship?

You may notice pineapple-inspired decor while you’re on your cruise, especially on a typical cruise. In most cases, these pineapples are placed based on the other meanings of the pineapple.

Upside down pineapples used as a code amongst swingers becomes even rarer as cruises and events specifically for swingers continue. So if you’re on a regular cruise, you’re more likely to encounter pineapple upside-down cake than couples seeking a good time.

Two pineapples enjoying some beach time

There are swinger dating sites available, so several swingers opt to search for other pineapple couples on those sites instead of wearing an upside-down pineapple too.

There’s no reason to be wary of everyone wearing pineapple print regardless because Hawaiian prints are a vacation staple that often features the fruit.

How Will I Spot a Swinger on a Cruise Ship?

Whilst they won’t be obvious and start telling everyone in the open that they are a cruise ship swinger, they may have hidden little signs which you should look out for!

These may include:

  • Wearing pineapple clothing
  • A pineapple tattoo
  • Upside down pineapple badge
  • Upside down pineapple pin
  • Upside down pineapple on a cabin door
  • A thumb ring
  • or… a toe ring!

Whilst it is unlikely you’ll find a swinger wearing multiple versions of the above, you may just spot a thumb ring or toe ring when in a hot tub – but don’t be alarmed, it doesn’t always mean they are a swinger! However, if they have a huge pineapple tattoo as well, you may be right in thinking they like to participate in cruise ship swinging !

Does Clothing With Pineapple on It Automatically Identify Someone as a Swinger?

The answer to this question is a strong no. Our research revealed that while some swingers use the upside-down pineapple symbol to indicate that they’re seeking a swinger party, that’s not always the case.

While we were in the swingers’ forums, we learned that while there are people who wear upside down pineapple clothing to send a message, others don’t, and some don’t even identify with the upside down pineapple meaning.

Another thing to consider is that most couples in the United States aren’t interested in swinging.

Two girls, with one sporting a pineapple outfit

There isn’t much research. From what we found, statistically , the number of couples in the United States who have participated in swinging falls between 4%- 10%.

That is a relatively small amount, and fruit print clothing is an annual summer trend that should be considered too.

It’s statistically unlikely that everyone you see wearing pineapple print clothing will be a swinger.

If you’re on a cruise ship specifically for swingers to search for like-minded people, it’s fair, but seeing pineapples upside down will most likely mean nothing if you stick to a typical cruise ship.

Assuming that persons are interested in swinging because they’re wearing clothing with an upside-down pineapple can place you in some very awkward situations.

Should I Avoid Wearing Clothes With Pineapple Printed on Them?

We understand why you would feel uncomfortable if you weren’t interested in the swinging lifestyle. The idea that you might seem like someone seeking out a swinger’s party while trying to enjoy your cruise can be daunting.

A user on TikTok called Linjeanw shared her story where she and her husband were mistaken as swingers after wearing matching pineapple bathing suits. Several persons chimed in to share their own stories in the comment section.

Similarly, there are stories from Redditors who knew the upside-down pineapple meaning who said that couples were extremely friendly to them when they wore a pineapple shirt on their cruise ship.

What Exactly Does An Upside Down Pineapple Mean?

These encounters have the potential to be awkward, but there’s no reason for you to avoid wearing your favorite pineapple shirt. The upside-down pineapple is used as a secret code, but that’s not its only purpose.

Swingers won’t automatically assume that everyone wearing the fruit is a swinger looking for adult fun. Subtly is a cornerstone of the swinger lifestyle, so in most cases, they will leave you alone when they realize you don’t want to be a part of a swinger’s party,

They are also well-versed in noticing when people know what the upside-down pineapple means.

Pineapples are only associated with swinging when they’re upside down, so if the symbols on your pineapple shirt are upright, you have nothing to fear. They are also a trendy pattern, so there’s no reason to feel uncomfortable, even if your pineapples are upside down.

Is There Any Other Symbol Used To Identify Swingers?

The upside-down pineapple symbol isn’t the only way swingers identify each other.

Some of the several other symbols and items are signs that someone is a part of the swinging lifestyle.

Here are some other symbols used by couples who swing to identify each other, on and off the cruise ship.

A Black Ring

When someone is wearing a black ring on any finger on their right hand, minus the middle finger, it could symbolize a swinger seeking to find a partner among their fellow cruisers. Still, it generally means that the wearer is a swinger looking to have a conversation.

The term unicorn refers to a single woman, generally, one who identifies as bisexual, who both persons in a relationship find attractive, and who’s also interested in having some adult fun with said couple.

The name comes from finding this woman is as rare as finding a unicorn. Unicorns may identify themselves with unicorn clothing and accessories.

You’re unlikely to interact with any unicorns on your cruise ship.

Garden Gnomes

Garden gnomes are considered quirky pieces of lawn décor, but in some cases, it could mean that your neighbors are sending a signal that they would like to swap partners.

We can say that upside down pineapples mean that the couple you’re interacting with could be swingers based on research. The same can’t be said for garden gnomes, as they are extremely common.

However, you won’t find many of those on a cruise ship!

Pampas Grass

Pampas Grass is currently Instagram’s aesthetic obsession, but it’s more than a pretty plant. Pampas grass’s connection with swinging goes back to the 1970s. Swingers used to grow them on their porch to indicate that they were a part of the community.

Much like what’s happening with the upside down pineapple now, news about this symbol became common knowledge.

People who weren’t swingers stopped purchasing the plant, and persons who were swingers stopped using it because the code was no longer discrete.

The swing is a logo commonly used by swingers to broadcast that they are a member of the community. The symbol has two parts, a swing, for obvious reasons, and a circle representing the larger swinging community.

The symbol has a red background and black outline. The black symbolizes the mystery associated with swimming, and the red symbolizes passion.

While the swing symbol is undeniably tied to the swing community, it is not used by everyone who identifies as a swinger. A lot of the stigma around swinging has died down, but people still prefer keeping their relationships private.

Both genders commonly wear anklets, but they are associated with swinging. In the swinging community, anklets are worn by married women to indicate that their partner is ok with them having relationships with other men.  In some cases, the women wore ankles with symbols like the letter Q or the ace of spades.

According to our research, these women are called hot wives, and they’re rare.

Before online sites and apps were abundant, swingers gained the ability to meet other community members easily; swingers used to wear wristbands to find each other. They frequently combined wearing their wristbands with black rings to ensure they got the message across.

These wristbands would have symbols representing the swinging community, like the swing symbol or the one you see in the picture below.

Final Words

We hope this article gives you a better understanding of the upside down pineapple meaning on your cruise ships.

A solitary pineapple

If you’ve already got some pineapple-patterned clothing, don’t worry about it – the statistics of you meeting swingers on a cruise ship are quite low and if the pineapples are all pointing up – then you won’t be attracting any unwanted attention.

That said, many cruisers are aware of the entire pineapple discussion and might see it and smile at you with some small amusement. Enjoy your cruise!

You’ll never look at this fruit the same way again.

TikTokers are exposing the juicy underground symbol that indicates couples are eager for erotic experimentation — and it appears completely innocuous without insider info.

Here’s the scoop: Randy travelers are pinning posters of upside-down pineapples to their hotel and cruise ship cabin doors to let fellow vacationers know they’re up for swinging. Some are even plopping out welcome mats!

The hashtag #UpsideDownPineapple has clocked a whopping 138 million views on TikTok as of Wednesday, with some clips claiming swingers even leave an actual pineapple upturned out front of their Airbnb accommodation to indicate that they enjoy partner swapping.

“People’s sex drives tend to go off the charts during vacations,” John Kamau, CEO of the hook-up app Cruise Ship Mingle , told The Post, saying he’s shocked by the number of swinging couples signing up for his, uh, pineapple-friendly service.

An upside down pineapple is a secret symbol used by swingers to indicate that they're eager for partner swapping. TikTok users have been sharing videos about the meaning behind the frisky fruit as part of the #Swingtok craze.

But while some lusty vacationers are brazen with their pineapple displays, other swingers are more subtle, putting pineapple pins and earrings on their clothing to signify their status.

“Tell me you’re a swinger without telling me you’re a swinger,” one experimental TikTokker wrote beneath a viral video showing her turning her pineapple earring upside down.

It’s unclear how the upturned fruit came to signify swinging. However, slang watchdogs noticed the popularity of the symbol “rising massively” among the partner swapping community in the 1990s, Men’s Health reported this week.

While there have long been other covert ways to identify swingers — such as pampas grass and a person wearing a black ring on their right hand — upside-down pineapples have now become the symbol du jour thanks to TikTok.

As the “sex party” summer of 2022 looms , the viral video platform has become a haven for sharing stories and information about unconventional kinks, with the hashtag #swingtok racking up a staggering 1.7 billion views.

The upside-down pineapple frequently features in the #swingtok videos — further evidence of the growing popularity of the symbol.

Randy travelers are purportedly pinning posters of upside down pineapples to their hotel doors to let fellow vacationers know they're up for swinging.

According to the popular travel tips website Cruise Mummy , upside-down pineapples are often seen on the cabin doors of cruise ships.

“If you see pineapple on a cruise ship door it means that the people in the cabin are up for meeting other couples for ‘adult fun,’ ” an anonymous tipster on the site wrote.

Cruise ships have long been a place for sexual experimentation, according to experts, with some intrepid travelers emboldened by the fact that they’re far from home and not on dry land.

“Most people on a cruise are total strangers … they are willing to push the envelop and do what they otherwise won’t do in their neck of the woods,” Cruise Ship Mingle’s Kamau told The Post.

"Most people on a cruise are total strangers... they are willing to push the envelop and do what they otherwise wont do in their neck of the woods," Cruise Ship Mingle's Kamau told The Post.

Kamau added that he has been on more than a dozen cruises in the past four years and has noticed a significant uptick in the number of upside-down pineapples stuck on cabin doors.

Some cruises have even tapped into the trend, with Cruise Mummy reporting that P&O Cruises’ new ship Iona offers a drink that comes in a cup shaped like an upside-down pineapple.

However, it’s not just cruise ships that have become hot spots for swingers.

Sexual wellness retreats encouraging erotic experimentation are booming across the globe. Some luxury resorts have even started offering services such as “orgy workshops,” according to Vice.

“Sex retreats are now becoming much more sophisticated in the sense that they’re not necessarily sex dens — they’re actually very nice resorts,” sex and relationships coach Colin Richards told the outlet.

“Sure, they might have a little dungeon in the corner, but if you’re sitting by the pool, it might feel like any other resort,” he added. “Except for perhaps a sign or two instructing folks not to engage in penetrative sex in the water.”

Wellness tourism in general — which includes sexy spa retreats and yoga workshops — is set to generate a whopping $817 billion this year , according to a report from the Global Wellness Institute.

And the field is only set to grow, with the business projected to bring in $1.3 trillion in 2025.

Sexual wellness will be a key component of the field, with sex therapist Marissa Nelson saying holidays will only get hotter as TikTok helps break down taboos.

“All our travel data says that folks are moving away from stereotypical, luxurious vacations, and instead, are interested in having experiences,” she told Vice.

It all indicates that upside-down pineapples will only become more popular in the months and years ahead, meaning you’re likely to spot the saucy symbol sometime during your next vacation.

The swinging community hid in the shadows. Then came #SwingTok.

Krystina  loves pineapples. Not just because of how they taste but because of what they represent.

Pineapples – upside-down pineapples, specifically – serve as a signal: that you and your partner are swingers .

Don't believe us? Head over to #SwingTok . Pineapples are plentiful on social media app TikTok across the hashtag, which has amassed more than 582 million views.

Krystina, 38, who requested her last name be withheld due to recent harassment she's received, blossomed into a #SwingTok influencer earlier this year after revealing herself to be a swinger on the platform. She and fellow swingers have forged a community on TikTok , and hope to demystify swinging and curb judgment from skeptics.

"I want people to know I'm a swinger," says the hairstylist from Michigan. "I'm proud of it."

But what exactly is swinging? How is it different from other non-monogamous relationships, such as open relationships or polyamory?

"Non-monogamous relationships can be as fulfilling and rewarding as monogamous relationships," says Cecille Ahrens, a licensed clinical social worker at  Transcend Therapy  in California. "One is not necessarily better than the other."

So, about non-monogamy: Willow Smith details her lifestyle on 'Red Table Talk': What you should know about polyamory

What is swinging?

Swinging usually means exchanging partners strictly for sex, according to a 2014 article in the Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality .

"Spouse exchange" has indeed happened historically, and as recent as the 1940s, nearly 40% of the world accepted it culturally. "Key clubs" in the U.S. included WWII fighter pilots and their wives, later dubbed "wife-swapping" in the 1950s. It's unclear how many partake in swinging – some estimates say 2% or less – though one study from the North American Swing Club Alliance said 15% of U.S. couples have tried it at least once in their married lives.

Nowadays, people visit swinging clubs and can otherwise connect online with other swingers.

Typically, swinging is "fairly white, middle to upper class, and cisgender-focused, while other different versions (of consensual non-monogamy) tend to be practiced in more diverse ways," says Shanna Katari, an assistant professor at the University of Michigan's School of Social Work and Department of Women and Gender Studies.

As shown on #SwingTok, the practice works for many couples – and hundreds of millions of people are at least curious enough about it to watch videos about swinging online.

"There's no competition, there's no jealousy. We both get to do what we want to do," says swinger Kylie George, of Cleveland, Ohio.

How do you know it's for you? "Opening up a relationship works best when the relationship as it is feels stable, honest, and communicative," says Allison Moon, author of " Getting It: A Guide to Hot, Healthy Hookups and Shame-Free Sex ." "Swinging won’t fix a broken relationship, but it can add new adventure and excitement to already solid ones."

The evolution of #SwingTok

Monogamy never felt like a fit for Krystina – even as far back as her first boyfriend in the fifth grade. She always dated multiple boyfriends, always cheated.

That continued after marrying her husband; before they began officially swinging with men, too, she cheated on her husband. The pair had always been sexually adventurous with other women.

"I just didn't know how to explain to him that I only am in love with him," she says.

"I only want to spend forever with him, but I still want attention from other men and I want to sexually be with other men."

By fall 2019, they researched swinging and met their first couple.

She began posting videos about her marriage in late 2020, but she wasn't quite ready to reveal they were swingers. But after seeing another swinger post about it, she wanted to join the fun and educate people. #SwingTok eventually trended – and true community was born.

"We're not just these sex-crazed maniacs," she says. "We love to have genuine friendships with people, and it's like a friends-with-benefit thing and swinging community is the only community I've ever felt accepted in my whole life."

Kylie George was a part of TikTok previously, mainly focusing on body positivity before joining #SwingTok. But meeting other swingers doesn't guarantee she and her partner will indeed swing with them.

"In the swinging community, you've got to be a little picky about who you swing with," she says. "I don't just swing with everybody."

The #SwingTok creators run a Discord chat together and have plans to collaborate through TikTok and adult websites; they also hope to create a swinging app.

"We want to break the swinger stigma," she says. "We want people to know this is not weird. This is not crazy. This is something that is normal and normal people with normal jobs do this."

The differences between polyamory and swinging

The biggest difference between the two? Polyamory is not just about sex. Polyamory means "multiple loves."

An easy way to tell the difference on social media (and in real life): pay attention to the pineapples. "On cruise ships, on your mailbox, on your Facebook, interested parties can put (up an) upside-down pineapple," says Niki Davis-Fainbloom , a New York City sex educator. "It is a subtle way to attract like-minded individuals without being that awkward couple who always asks their friends to have sex with them."

George has everything pineapple around her house. "My partner always says, 'You're not being very subtle about it.' And I say, 'I know. I'm not trying to be.'"

Leanne Yau , who is polyamorous, never felt comfortable with monogamy – and ultimately founded non-monogamy social media platform Poly Philia . She explains the nuances and potential for overlap between the swinging and polyamory communities: "A lot of polyamorous people do participate in group sex and go to swinging parties and that kind of thing and similarly, there are some swingers who have developed long-term relationships with other couples which may not be explicitly romantic but they are committed and could look like polyamory."

Important: The dangers of not talking to kids about sex

Those on #SwingTok want you to understand

► There's a stigma. "I don’t think we can expect it to be at the level of respect and high regard as marriage, at least not for a long time," Ahrens says.

► Couples therapy is a useful tool. "It is really important to set parameters and boundaries up front. It is also important to build shared language, to talk about how you would navigate certain circumstances, and more," says  Moe A. Brown , a licensed marriage and family therapist.

► Communication plays a huge part in a healthy relationship . "The most successful open relationships are the ones that talk a lot about what’s going on for them," Moon says.

► Jealousy is inevitable. Think about it like a "check engine" light in your car, Moon says. It happens and is not inherently wrong. "It doesn’t mean that your car is toast, or that you need to pull over right away and light the thing on fire. It doesn’t mean you should’ve never bought the car in the first place. It’s just an indicator light that something needs to be looked at."

► There are lots of options for those interested in trying out an open relationship. "Swinging may be one of the best-known flavors of open relationships, but it’s not the only one," Moon says. "Ask yourself, what kinds of relationships do I want with the people I sleep with? What kind of sex am I looking for? How important is an emotional connection to my sense of sexual satisfaction and pleasure?"

Sigh: In 2021, sex and disability are still taboo. What are we so afraid of?
