Pithoragarh - The Little Kashmir

Pithoragarh is the easternmost district of Uttaranchal in north India, surrounded by Nepal to the east and Tibet to the north.It is popular for its exquisite natural beauty and is widely known as the " Little Kashmir ".

Located at an altitude of 1,650mts above sea level, Pithoragarh is a small valley about 5kms long and 2kms wide. Kumaoni, Hindi, and English are the three main languages spoken in this region. Pithoragarh district is named after the Pithoragarh town of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.

Why Visit Pithoragarh?

Pithoragarh has a lot of historical importance. It was one of the main centers of power during the rule of Chand Rajas of Kumaon. From this region, pilgrims begin their journey to the holiest shrines of Mansarovar and Kailash. You can get an excellent view of the snow-capped mountains of Nanda Devi, Panchachuli and Appi of Nepal from Chandak Hill located a height of 2000 mts.

Pithoragarh has quite a number of important places of interest to attract tourists. A magnificent fort, the Pithoragarh Fort stands tall in Pithoragarh construted by the Gurkhas in the 18th century. Located on the outskirts of the city is a cave temple known as Kapileshwar Mahadev is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Pithoragarh Travel News

Under the UDAAN Scheme, Uttarakhand Government has started Helicopter Services from Haldwani to Pithoragarh, Munsiyari  & Champawat from 22 Feb 2024. Heli Services from Haldwani will be available from Gaulapar Helipad to Pithoragarh , Munsiyari & Champawat .

A seven seater helicopter will operated by Air Heritage fly 2 times a day from Haldwani to each destination. The ticket price for helicopter service from Haldwani will be INR 2500 per person for Champawat, INR 3000 for Pithoragarh and INR 3500 for Munsiyari. 

Daily commercial flights from Pithoragarh finally took off from 30 Jan 2024 with 18 seater plane operated by Flybig, flying from  Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun to land at Naini Saini Aiport in Pithoragarh .

Direct flight cost between Dehradun and Pithoragarh : Approx. INR 4198/- to 6300/-  (one sided) For Adults. Flight is operational only on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

Activities in Pithoragarh

Trekking : Pithoragarh is the starting point for few treks into the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand including the famed Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra. The mesmerizing natural beauty that surrounds the valley of Pithoragarh is sublime.      

Village Tourism : One can walk around the villages and learn about their way of life, customs and festivals of the locals. There are few villages and hamlets which one can explore before starting their trek to the higher latitudes of Kumaon Mountains.

History of Pithoragarh

Pithoragrah has been referred as ' Rai Pithora ' by the dynamic Rajput King, Prithviraj Chauhan. In 1364, after being defeated by Bhartpal, the Rajwar of Uku (now in Nepal), Pithoragarh was reigned for the rest of 14th century by the three generations of the Pal dynasty and the kingdom was annexed from Pithoragarh to Askot . 

According to the old scriptures, Pal dynasty based out of Askot was soon uprooted by the Chands in 1420. At that time Vijay Brahm of the Brahm dynasty (from Doti) ruled the region as the King. It was after the death of Gyan Chand in a conflict with Kshetra Pal that the Pals were able to reclaim the throne. It is believed that in 1445, Bharti Chand had defeated the 'Bams' or Brahms who were the rulers of Pithoragarh and the Chand dynasty dominated the Pithoragarh town.

You can get a wonderful view of the Soar Valley and the surrounding Himalayan peaks from this place. Pithoragarh is also famous for its hills like Nanda Devi East, Nanda Devi West, Trishul, Rajrambha, Hardeol, Bambadhura, Nandakhat, and the Panchchuli group. Pithoragarh also boasts of some impressive glaciers like Ralam , Milam , Namik, Meola and Balati glaciers. Pithoragarh is famous for wooden, woolen and acne handicrafts.

19. Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave Temple

Patal Bhuvaneshwar, an enchanting limestone cave temple nestled in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district, India, is a place steeped in legend and revered for its spiritual significance. Located 14 km from Gangolihat, this cave holds a special place in Hindu mythology. Believed to be the dwelling of Lord Shiva, Patal Bhuvaneshwar is associated with numerous Hindu deities. According to local lore, it is home to thirty-three types of gods (not thirty-three crore). The cave system is vast, stretching 160 meters in length and descending 90 feet deep from its entrance. Pithoragarh is a scenic town in the Kumaon hills of eastern Uttarakhand. Pithoragarh is situated in a serene valley known as Soar Valley. The borders of Tibet and Nepal touch Pithoragarh. Gangolihat is a small town in Pithoragarh that has many ancient temples and caves. Itt is also one of the places to visit in Pithoragarh. Haat Kalika, Ambika Dewal, Chamunda Mandir, and Vaishnavi Mandir are some famous temples here. Haat Kalika is famous among soldiers of the Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Armed Forces. The forests are home to leopards and Himalayan Black Bears.

12. Kafni Glacier Trek

Kafni Glacier is a trekking destination near Pithoragarh. The Kafni Glacier trek is one of the spectacular treks in Uttarakhand. Kafni Glacier is a glacier below the Nand Kot mountain peak and is to the left side of Pindari Glacier. The trekking trail goes through Kumaoni villages, dense forests, river streams, and lush green valleys. You may camp here and enjoy the views of Maiktoli, Nanda Khat, and Nanda Devi peaks.

13. Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple

Soar Valley looks very beautiful from this temple. To reach the shiva linga, you will have to creep and crawl through a narrow tunnel that is in a dark cave.

Pancheshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the many temples in Pithoragarh that you can visit. This temple is built on the meeting place of rivers Kali and Saryu. Pancheshwar Temple is also known as the temple of Chaumu. The temple is near the Indo-Nepal border. Lord Shiva is the chief Hindu deity of this temple. Pithoragarh is a city in Uttarakhand . It is close to the China , Nepal and Tibet border.

Pithoragarh can be accessed by bus and taxi. The buses are available from New Delhi at ISBT Anand Vihar which are of category general to luxury:

• New Delhi to Haldwani to Pithoragarh
• New Delhi to Tanakpur to Pithoragarh
• New Delhi-Bazpur-Kaladungi-Nainital-Almora-Pithoragarh.

If you come by the first option then you have to get down at Haldwani and from there you will get a shared taxi to Pithoragarh, in this option the buses available from Delhi are of both categories (i.e., A/C, non A/C), but if you come by the second option then you will get a direct bus from there, but the condition of the roads is not good, so it is advised to come by the first option.

The third option is the best if you have your own vehicle. The travel time is 10½ hrs from Delhi, if you are experienced in hill driving; if not, then 12 hours. This time includes numerous stoppages for photography. The road is very good and the distance by road is 490 km.

There is a new airstrip and ATC set up near NainiSaini , and this likely to open once some political and technical hurdles are overcome.

There is a new riverside road project in line, that will reduce the journey time by a huge factor.

• walthi, munsyari . Its in the mountains and a really nice place to see the sunset and sunrise. You can jog to this place in the morning or can take a walk. The view is panaromic from this place.  
• Chandhag ( Chandak ). This is 7 km from the town and you can see the panoramic view of the city from this hilltop. A temple dedicated to 'Manu' is located here.  
• Dekatya temple ( It is 3 km from Pithoragarh and with Neda Village. It is very beautiful little mountain. There is mulpa mata temple with different types of fruits such as dadim (anardana), anar, guava, plum, apple, hissaloo, kafal. The view of Himalaya Parvat (Panchachuli) and Ashurchula Parvat is very beautiful. ).

• The Hilltop Buddhha Monastery . It is also in the city premises near the city stadium.

American tourist facing possible 12-year prison sentence after ammo found in luggage in Turks and Caicos

Valerie Watson returned to Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport in tears on Tuesday morning in a drastic departure from how she imagined her long weekend trip to Turks and Caicos would end.

Watson is home, but her husband, Ryan Watson, was jailed on the island and is facing a potential mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years behind bars after airport security allegedly found four rounds of hunting ammo in his carry-on bag earlier this month. 

"We were trying to pack board shorts and flip flops," Valerie Watson told CBS News. "Packing ammunition was not at all our intent."

Valerie Watson, who learned Sunday she would not be charged and would be allowed to return home, said the trip "went from what was supposed to be a dream vacation to a nightmare."

Ryan Watson was released on bail after two nights , but must remain on the island and check in with police twice a week.

The Watsons are not the only ones going through this ordeal.

Bryan Hagerich is awaiting trial after ammo was found in the Pennsylvania man's checked bag in February.

"I subsequently spent eight nights in their local jail. Some of the darkest, hardest times of my life, quite frankly," Hagerich said. "These last 70 days have been kind of a roller coaster, just the pain and suffering of having your family at home and I'm here."

Possessing a gun or ammunition is prohibited in Turks and Caicos, but tourists were previously often able to just pay a fine. In February, however, a court order mandated that even tourists in the process of leaving the country are subject to prison time.

Since November 2022, eight firearms and ammunition prosecutions in total have been brought involving tourists from the United States, three of which are currently before the court with each of the defendants on bail.

Last year, a judge found Michael Grim from Indiana had "exceptional circumstances" when he pleaded guilty to accidentally having ammunition in his checked bag. He served almost six months in prison. 

"No clean running water. You're kind of exposed to the environment 24/7," he told CBS News. "Mosquitoes and tropical illnesses are a real concern. There's some hostile actors in the prison."

The judge was hoping to send a message to other Americans. 

"[His] sentencing was completely predicated on the fact that I was an American," Grim said. 

The U.S. embassy last September posted a travel alert online, warning people to "check your luggage for stray ammunition," noting it would "not be able to secure your release from custody."

In a statement, a State Department spokesperson told CBS News, "We are aware of the arrest of U.S. citizens in Turks and Caicos.  When a U.S. citizen is arrested overseas, we stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. In a foreign country, U.S. citizens are subject to that country's laws, even if they differ from those in the United States." 

Last year, TSA found a record 6,737 guns at airport security checkpoints, and most of them were loaded.  

"I can't even begin to think that this very innocent, regrettable mistake would prevent me from being able to watch my son graduate or teach him to shave or take my daughter to dances," Ryan Watson said. "It's just unfathomable. I do not — I can't process it."

The Turks and Caicos government responded to CBS News in a lengthy statement confirming the law and reiterating that, even if extenuating circumstances are found to be present, the judge is required to mandate prison time.
