Things to do in Camden County

  • Published: Aug. 26, 2021, 6:04 p.m.

In New Jersey, a trip down the shore and a hike along the Appalachian Trail can happen on the same day. Pizza is better here than anywhere else in the country, music venues are legendary, downtowns are made for strolling and historic sites and museums are in no short supply. Forget the What Exit jokes … we love the Garden State.

So, for those residents — out-of-staters, too — who are ready to make plans after more than a year of being cooped up, we have some ideas for those who would rather grab their car keys or a mass transit ticket than book a flight.

Consider this an insider’s guide to the state, broken down by counties. It’s not an all-encompassing list, and it’s not meant to be. It’s a jumping-off point and then go do some exploring and let your curiosity — and some help from locals — be your guide.

The latest part of our series takes a look at Camden County.

Historic and …. Prehistoric

The Battleship New Jersey (100 Clinton St., Camden | 866-877-6262 or 856-966-1652), the nation’s most decorated Navy ship afloat and largest battleship in the history of the world, welcomes visitors.

At the Battleship New Jersey Museum & Memorial, visitors not only see artifacts from the battleship’s past, but also have an interactive experience.

Visitors can tour the battleship, which was in service from World War II through the 1980s. Guests navigate the decks, go up and down on ladders, step through passageways and sometimes maneuver in tight spaces … “just like the officers and the crew of the USS New Jersey did,” sit in the chair from which Admiral Halsey commanded the biggest battleship and the 5th Fleet. Guests are welcome to “stretch out” on the bunks where the sailors slept, climb into the 16″ gun turret and learn how the projectiles were loaded. The museum’s Overnight Encampment Program will restart Sept. 17.

Hadrosaurus Foulkii Site | Maple Avenue, Haddonfield

According to hadrosaurus.com , the official website of the Haddonfield Dinosaur Sculpture Committee, in 1858, Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences member William Foulke and a crew excavated the nearly-complete skeleton of a gigantic prehistoric animal on a Haddonfield farm. The skeleton had the anatomical features of both a lizard and a bird.

Dr. Joseph Leidy, chairman of the Board of Curators of Philadelphia’s Academy of Natural Sciences who oversaw the removal, preservation and interpretation of the fossilized remains, recognized the animal as a dinosaur.

Leidy named the animal Hadrosaurus foulkii.

The site of the 1858 discovery sits at the edge of Camden County Park land between Haddonfield and Cherry Hill. And, in 1984, one Boy Scout made sure the location of the find was officially marked. That year, Eagle Scout Christopher Brees created and placed a stone-mounted memorial at the site.

Since that time, the site has been maintained as a public “mini-park.” Brees’ father, Butch Brees, a member of the Haddonfield Dinosaur Sculpture Committee, serves as curator of Hadrosaurus Park, a National Historic Landmark, which also features a pole-mounted plaque.

Also, visitors to downtown Haddonfield are sure to see the dinosaur statue.

11 Things to Know Before Visiting Camden, NJ

places to visit in camden nj

Camden is a city with tons of history, and if you plan your visit right, you can experience all of it. However, there are some important things you should know before heading to this city on the Delaware River.

Camden gets a bad rap.

Crime rates in the city have been notoriously high over the past few decades, and parts of the city are a hotspot for drugs and violence. If you tell a local you’re planning to spend the day in Camden, they may warn you to be careful.

Homes in Camden

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a lovely time

Parking can be tough.

Don’t be afraid to try the side streets: Camden’s main roads, Market Street and Broadway, pretty much only have metered parking, and those spots fill up quick. There are smaller, numbered streets off those larger avenues, though, and you can often find free parking along them.

You’re being watched

The Camden County Police Department uses a state-of-the-art, almost futuristic method of reducing crime: they’ve got eyes everywhere. Take a look at streetlight poles and along the rooflines of buildings and you’ll probably spot a camera. The monitoring efforts are working; crime in the city has dropped significantly in recent years, and when bad things do happen, the police response is incredibly fast.

Rush hour can get a little crazy

Camden is home to one of the largest medical centers in the region, a big university, and the headquarters of a handful of huge corporations. That means lots of people are headed into the city around 9 a.m. and headed home at 5 p.m. Do yourself a favor, and don’t plan to drive around the city during rush hour.

There’s also a ton of history

Camden has been a center of industry since it was established as a fur trading post in 1626. Some of the most well-known figures in American history have lived in Camden at one time or another, and while it’s not the capital of New Jersey , it is definitely the capital of South Jersey and the best place to get to know the region’s history.

If you hear a cannon, don’t panic

A big part of that history is docked on the waterfront. The Battleship New Jersey is a floating museum that welcomes visitors onto its decks and into the warren of hallways and ladders below. Every once in a while, VIP visitors to the ship get to set off a very large gun mounted on the deck. It shoots blanks, of course, but it makes a pretty serious boom.

The USS Battleship New Jersey

If you’re not city-savvy, stick to the waterfront

Just because Camden is bouncing back from its bad reputation doesn’t mean all its neighborhoods are friendly destinations for tourists. It’s not a big city, and if you get turned around it’s easy to end up in a not-great neighborhood. You’re safe along the waterfront, though, where you’ll find gorgeous views, art installations, and a world-class aquarium.

There are hippos just around the corner

Remember that world-class aquarium we mentioned? It’s home to Button and Genny , two Nile hippos who weigh 3,000 lbs each. It’s the only aquarium in the world with hippos on exhibit, so don’t miss your chance to say hello.

A very happy hippo at the Camden Adventure Aquarium

The best restaurants and bars are kind of hidden

You won’t find tons of advertisements to lure you into eateries and bars, and some of the best joints are tucked into alleys or side streets, or even parked along them (there are some great food trucks in Camden).

So chat up a local

The people of Camden, as a whole, are incredibly friendly. Even though it’s a city, Camden resembles a small town in that many families have lived there for generations. They know their city inside and out, and they’re happy to point you toward a fantastic lunch spot or distillery.

For great family entertainment, check out the camden waterfront for historic attractions, aquarium fun and much more..

The Camden Waterfront has a range of attractions that will interest the entire family.

For openers, there's the Battleship New Jersey , America's most decorated battleship, which is permanently berthed on the Delaware River at the Camden Waterfront. At nearly 900 feet long and 11 stories high, the battleship is an impressive addition to the waterfront. The Battleship New Jersey arrived at the Camden Waterfront in July 2000 to undergo restoration and conversion into a museum. The ship opened to the public in October 2001 at its memorial pier near Adventure Aquarium . Adventure Aquarium is a wonderful interactive family fun experience.

The latest addition is the Stringray Beach Club that allows visitors to actually touch and hand feed an array of stingrays. The Stingray Beach Club is a tropical beach paradise where it's always warm and sunny, and even though you're inside, it feels bright and airy like you've been transported to a tropical island oasis. Fluffy clouds, palm trees and waterfalls surround guests as they are invited to dip their hands into the warm waters to touch and hand-feed an array of beautiful stingrays. A few lucky guests will even get the chance to wade-in with the gentle creatures of Stingray Beach Club for an up-close stingray experiences.

In addition to the battleship and aquarium, the Camden Waterfront also has the Camden Children's Garden, and there's the BB&T Pavilion , which is a year-round amphitheater that offers major concerts by top-name entertainers, Broadway productions and other family events.
