Police Unity Tour Celebrates Life

The Police Unity Tour, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s partner association, provides critical funding annually to help us honor officers killed in the line of duty by organizing a bike ride from New Jersey to Washington, DC. The contingent of Israeli National Police officers that comes for the Police Unity Tour every May rides with Chapter 1 in NJ. It is known, however, as Group 18. Eighteen equates to the letters in the Hebrew alphabet that spell “chai.” From Hebrew, chai translates to “life.”

A month before the Hamas attacks and war broke out on October 7, 2023, officers from New Jersey and across the country participated in the 2023 Israeli Police Unity Tour. From that journey have come messages of strength and support, which have resonated from New Jersey to Gaza to the highest levels of leadership in Israel. And these messages have reinforced what they ride for. Read their story in this piece from the October issue of New Jersey Cops magazine.

Honor Chair Built for the Fallen

Last week, Saving A Hero's Place , with the support of FinancialCop, built an Honor Chair on site to be placed on display within the Museum. Honor Chairs represent a permanent seat for our nation’s fallen heroes so that they always have a place within their respected department. Saving A Hero’s Place custom builds the honor chairs in memory of fallen law enforcement. The chairs are donated to the agency where the fallen hero once worked. To date, over 260 honor chairs have been donated across 29 states. The National Law Enforcement Museum's Honor Chair has been built and dedicated in memory of all of those lost across our nation.

2023 Annual Awards Ceremony and Reception

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund's annual ceremony to recognize and award the individuals and agencies who have created programs that save officer lives, who have gone above and beyond their call of duty, and who have made a significant impact on the law enforcement community, took place on September 29th at the National Law Enforcement Museum. Awards presented were:

  • 2023 Destination Zero Officer Safety and Wellness Awards
  • 2022-2023 Officers of the Month
  • 2023 Ambassador Impact Award

The 2023 Awards Ceremony and Reception was generously sponsored by

OSW Report Released

The Officer Safety and Wellness team at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund has completed an in-depth examination of 10 years of law enforcement fatalities linked to the use of tire deflation devices, otherwise known as “spike strips.” The report highlights the risks taken by many officers as they attempt to stop fleeing suspects by placing these deflation devices directly into the path of an oncoming vehicle. This brief report emphasizes the importance of proper use and deployment of these devices to safely end pursuits and to reduce the risks many officers take when trying to quickly deploy them.

Monthly LODD Fatality Report

In October, 20 fallen heroes were designated as line-of-duty deaths. Their names will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in April of 2024, and they will be honored and forever remembered. May their selflessness, bravery, and sacrifice never be forgotten.

Summer 2023 Officers of the Month Announced

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is proud to recognize Lieutenant Aaron Phipps of the Calhoun County (MI) Sheriff's Department as the July 2023 Officer of the Month and  Lieutenant Corey Brooks of the Salisbury (NC) Police Department as the August 2023 Officer of the Month.

This well-deserved recognition goes to each of them for their remarkable acts of heroism. Lt. Phipps saved the life of a toddler. Lt. Brooks rescued a non-responsive truck driver from a burning tractor-trailer on the interstate highway.

The Officer of the Month program is sponsored by the Police Unity Tour.

Belleville police are riding bicycles from New Jersey to Washington D.C. for a fundraising tour that honors deceased officers.

BELLEVILLE, NJ — Belleville police were among those across the state that took up a call to action in the name of their fallen peers as part of an annual biking tour.

Earlier this week, officers from around New Jersey kicked off the 2023 Police Unity Tour, a bicycle event that honors deceased officers and raises funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial and Museum.

They included officers from the Belleville Police Department, who are among those riding from New Jersey to Washington D.C.

Find out what's happening in Belleville-Nutley with free, real-time updates from Patch.

What’s the inspiration behind the annual event? According to policeunitytour.com :

“In May 1997, the Police Unity Tour was organized by Officer Patrick P. Montuore of the Florham Park Police Department, with the hope of bringing public awareness of police officers who have died in the line of duty and to honor their sacrifices. What started with 18 riders on a four-day fundraising bicycle ride from Florham Park to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. has grown into nine chapters, consisting of nearly 2500 members nationwide who make the trip annually.”

ABOUT CHAPTER II

The Police Unity Tour Inc.

Welcome to the home page for Chapter II of the Police Unity Tour! Chapter II is based in Southern New Jersey.

In May 1997 Florham Park (NJ) Police Officer Pat Montuore had a simple idea: organize a four day bicycle ride from New Jersey to Washington, DC to raise public awareness about law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and to ensure that their sacrifice is never forgotten. With that, the Police Unity Tour was formed.

Twenty-six years later, the Police Unity Tour will arrive at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, on May 12th, 2022 with more than 2,600 Police Unity Tour participants including riders, motorcycles and support personnel. These individuals are comprised from nine Police Unity Tour Chapters representing more than 40 states and several countries.

The journey is long and challenging. But for the Police Unity Tour participants, it is what they strive for throughout the year. Through fundraising and physical training, they know that their efforts raise awareness of the ultimate sacrifice made by so many law enforcement officers.

The last leg of the journey ends at the Memorial, where the participants are greeted by friends, family and survivors. Once there, many Police Unity Tour members present remembrance bracelets worn on their wrists throughout the journey to the families of the fallen.

This past May, The Police Unity Tour was proud to donate more than $2.05 million to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, bringing their total donations to more than $30 million over their history.

Inspired by our commitment and our Motto, "WE RIDE FOR THOSE WHO DIED"®,The Police Unity Tour is the sponsor of the National Law Enforcement Museum's Hall of Remembrance, the design and installation of electronic directories at the Memorial, the Memorial Fund's Officer of the Month Award and Recently Fallen Alert program.

In 1999, 22 members from Southern New Jersey began Chapter II seeing the need to expand the Unity Tour Family. Since then we have grown from 22 to over 200+ members.

Each year we depart from a southern New Jersey town and continue on with stops in Delaware and Maryland.  On the last day we merge with Chapter I (North Jersey) and renew our partnership by riding together to the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Chapter II starts each year by completing a memorial ride in honor of a fallen brother or sister. In 2022 we will continue that tradition by riding from NJ to Washington, DC.

We are all proud to be part of the Police Unity Tour and we are humbled by the opportunity to "RIDE FOR THOSE WHO DIED"®

Please take the time to look through our website. The  Membership P age will answer some frequently asked questions.

Local group prepares for Police Unity Tour

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A local group of current and retired law enforcement officers are gearing up for a 325-mile bike ride.

It’s part of a nationwide initiative called the Police Unity Tour, which raises funds every year for the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C.

Starting Wednesday, the teams will ride their bikes from northern New Jersey all the way to the nation’s capitol in honor of fallen officers. It’s an event that brings together around 3,000 riders from all walks of life.

A group of Hamilton County deputies are making the annual trek to our nation's capital to honor fallen officers.

The Police Unity Tour is a bicycle ride to raise awareness about officers who have died in the line of duty.

On Monday, Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey called out the names of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice during their oath to serve and protect their community.

Becky Schweizer knows the weight of that sacrifice all too well. Her son, Hamilton County Cpl. Adam McMillan died in a crash in October 2020.

Now, she is riding in the Police Unity Tour to honor her son who himself had made the ride to honor others.

"The first year after his death, we went as survivors, and after that, I began to think about all the times that he had ridden and his name was now on the wall, which I never thought I'd hear or see," Schweizer said. "So I decided I wanted to see the police tour through his eyes."

A support team will take a parallel route to the cyclists and go ahead of them to set up for breaks and water stations. Schweizer will be riding her son's bike.

"I just I want to do this for Adam," Schweizer said. "I want to do this to honor my son's memory."

The riders and support team will leave Cincinnati with the trailer carrying the bikes and travel to northern New Jersey. They will then leave New Jersey on the bikes Thursday and arrive in Washington, D.C., on Sunday.
