Portugal offers beauty, excitement, and something for everyone

Portugal, while relatively small, is one of the greatest destinations for motorcycle tours in Europe. The country offers such an incredibly diverse array of sights and experiences that it will be hard to drag yourself back to the airport to head home! Portugal has existed as a nation for about 900 hundred years, and in that time its borders are relatively unchanged. That feat is remarkable, but it also creates a wonderfully vibrant and unique culture that you are sure to love. The major cities, like Porto and Lisbon, are home to fantastic architecture, delicious cuisine, and some of the country’s most famous museums and monuments. You’ll find buildings decorated entirely with one of Portugal’s trademark works of art – azulejo, which are intricately painted ceramic tiles. In Porto, be sure to wander the waterfront along the mighty Douro River, visit the Port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, and marvel at the interior of the Sao Bento train station. In Lisbon, hitch a ride on a funicular to beat the hills, visit the Castelo de Sao Jorge for spectacular views of the city (and a little history), wander the Alfama neighborhood, and visit the monastery and monuments of Belem. You should also try to catch a Fado show, which is a deeply emotional, uniquely Portuguese musical performance.

All you have to know about a motorcycle tour in Portugal

They’re also home to the major airports and are likely where you’ll first enter the country for your Portugal tour, unless you happen to be traveling overland. Although, you will be able to take some shorter domestic flights to places like Faro in the south.

Any Portugal motorcycle tours must encompass the smaller cities, towns, and villages, and Planet Ride does their best to find tours that do. There, you’ll have an eye-level view of Portuguese culture. In fact, Guimaraes is considered to be the birthplace of the nation! Another great destination is Evora, where much of the city is still hemmed in by ancient city walls, houses have been built into the aqueduct arches, and ancient megalith complexes hide in the surrounding landscapes. Then you have places like the religious pilgrimage city of Fatima, the surf mecca of Nazare, and the southern beachside party town of Faro.

The countryside, including the mountains and forests of the north, the hot rolling plains of Alentejo, and the sun and sand of the Algarve, should not be ignored during your Portugal tour! Destinations like the stunning national park of Peneda-Geres and its lakes, mountains, and waterfalls, the terraced vineyards of the Douro river valley, or the ancient megalith structures found outside Evora are all sure to leave an impression. Portugal is doing an excellent job of preserving the environment and has countless Natural Parks and nature reserves. For example, Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina protects a large swathe of the southwestern coast, Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park offers caves, waterfalls, and amazing hiking, or Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela, which offers dramatic, rugged landscapes, high alpine passes, and massive monuments carved straight into the rock.

So, no matter where you go in Portugal, you are sure to find something unforgettable. A mix of cities, towns, and countryside offers the best view of the Portuguese culture and can all easily be combined into a short or long Portugal tour.

What Planet Ride offers for motorcycle adventures in Portugal

Planet Ride has tracked down a collection of Portugal motorcycle tours that will leave you breathless and wanting more! We have spent countless hours in search of phenomenal local guides who are at the top of their craft. We only work with the best, and these guides have been working and living in Portugal for years. They know all the best sights, great places to try the local food, and what those strange road signs mean. They can help you sink into the local culture or get you out of mechanical trouble with your bike. Every guide we feature is dedicated to bringing you’re a Portugal tour that is top-notch and unforgettable.

Take Jean-Francois for example. He chose to settle in Portugal for its authenticity, charm, landscapes, traditions, gastronomy, culture, and heritage. Jean-Francois leads several different Portugal motorcycle tours, like the 10-day Great Tour of Portugal and an 8-day Harley excursion from Porto to Faro. On the former, you’ll begin in the town of Mira, where you receive your Harley, Honda, or BMW bike and attend a briefing with all of the other riders. From there, it’s off to Lisbon and the historic quarter of Belem. Days three and four take your further south, where you’ll eventually reach Faro on the coast of the Algarve. Be sure to take in the scenic views of quaint fishing villages, golden seaside cliffs, and endless sand, surf, and ocean. Now, you’ll head back north to the ancient lands of Alentejo. Stops in Evora and Covhila let you discover a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the entrance to Serra da Estrela. Continuing, you’ll round out this road trip adventure winding through the carefully terraced vineyards of the Douro River valley. Along the way, you’ll get to visit a Quinta, or wine estate, where Port wine (and others) are produced! Finally, things come to a close, and you return to Mira.

Then there’s Pedro, who’s a native of Portugal and guides some intense off-road riding. His Wild Trails in the Heart of Portugal tour is six days of some of the most exceptional enduro riding out of all the motorcycle tours in Europe. You’ll arrive in Porto with a little time to explore before joining up with the rest of the group for dinner and a trip briefing. While out on the town, make sure to cross the famous Ponte Luis, wander along the river, and marvel at the azulejo that decorate countless Porto landmarks. For the next five days, you’ll crisscross north-central Portugal on a solid KTM bike. The first day of riding takes you along a rough stone track (which also happens to be where the Trials World Championships were once held) to an ancient Celtic city (or, Citania) from the 1st century B.C. Day three of your off-road Portugal tour will see the group heading for Recarei and its surrounding mountains and eucalyptus forests. The hilly terrain and steep descents make for some crazy riding! Finally, you’ll hit Lagares and the “impossible climb” of Senhora Salto on the last two days of riding, before relaxing a bit in Porto and heading home.

Explore the heart of Portugal's wine region

Your first day begins when you arrive in Lisbon. The hotel is located in the city centre, just 5 km from Lisbon airport. Our partner will welcome all participants in the afternoon for the first tour briefing and handover of your BMW Motorrad. In the evening, you can look forward to a welcome dinner with your tour guide and the other participants on the tour. On the second day, the round trip begins, you say goodbye to Lisbon and make your way to the Arrábida nature reserve. The roads here are packed with curves and offer spectacular views of the ocean. You cross the River Sado on a ferry before travelling on towards Évora. Évora is a charming city in the heart of Alentejo, and is famous for its rich cultural heritage.

On the third day, you will explore the Alentejo wine region, which is famous for producing magnificent wines. While you take a lunch break in the medieval village of Marvão, you have the opportunity to visit the well-preserved castle and admire the vast plains from the tower. The surrounding landscape is captivating, with perfect views of the white houses that are typical of the region. This day ends in a beautiful pousada located in the Serra da Estrela. On the fourth day, you cross the impressive mountain range of the Serra da Estrela, climb to the highest point and enjoy the breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape on your way into the beautiful Douro Valley.

See the beauty of Portugal along the breathtaking Atlantic coast

After spending the night in a charming hotel near the Douro River, the fifth day of your trip sees you travelling further into the heart of the Douro Valley – one of the oldest and most beautiful wine regions in the world. Marvel at the terraced landscape, which has been used to grow grapevines for more than 2,000 years. Visit the historic centre of Guimarães and the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, before arriving in Porto. There you will be able to enjoy a relaxing rest day on the sixth day of the tour. You've got plenty of time to explore the city on your own.

On the seventh day, you will head to Aveiro, a city famous for its canals and its elaborate coastal culture. After lunch and a traditional Moliceiro boat tour on the canals, you will travel on to Coimbra, Portugal's oldest university city. Visit the medieval city centre before making your way to your hotel on the Mondego River.

From traditional to historical monuments

On your eighth day, you will visit the Convent of Christ and the Castle of Tomar, which served as the headquarters of the Knights Templar in the 12th century. Then, you will continue on to Nazaré, a small fishing village that has become a hotspot for surfers of late. Finally, the day ends in a very charming and modern hotel, built in the surroundings of a cloister perfectly integrated into the Alcobaça Monastery, one of the most important Cistercian monasteries in the world.

On the ninth day, you will ride to the charming coastal village of Ericeira, which is known for its surfing beaches and hospitable locals. Your tour then takes you back to Lisbon along the coast and through the beautiful streets of Cape Roca and Cascais Bay, an elegant suburb of Lisbon known for its first-class restaurants and beaches.

On the tenth day, you are free to fly home. Perhaps you'll have time to explore more of Lisbon before your return flight. This will be the end of your unforgettable motorcycle tour through Portugal.

We have taken care of everything for you, so you can concentrate fully on riding and exploring.

OUR TESTIMONIES

portugal motorrad tour

We just returned from our first trip to Portugal as well as our first motorcycle tour in Portugal with Miguel. It was exhilarating, fear, relaxation, pleasure and it changes you forever with all the curves. In other words, it was fear and emotional pleasure rolled all into one that makes you wanna keep going on and on! Can't wait to do it all over again with our fantastic Tour Director Miguel!! In addition to the motorcycle riding I don't know what was more exciting: the train, the boat ride, the castles, the Airbnb 250 year old home or the homemade meals!!! If you are even thinking about a motorcycle tour in Portugal, Portugal Motorcycle Tours would be your best choice! Norma and Bill - Myrtle Beach, SC

“It rained pretty much all day today! It was a pretty slow speed day except for a really fun section that had good turns that really flowed. I could have done that all day!! We got to our hotel that is part of a Castle/Fort that was built in 1392. Another great day with Portugal Motorcycle Tours!”

“Just finished this tour with Miguel, Andy and Ron. Had a brilliant (but all too brief) time riding some truly majestic roads across Portugal, visiting some interesting places (such as a Castle up in the hills which unknown to Miguel, was closed for lunch!). Evenings of enjoyment with the other guys on the trip, great companions on the journey, staying in some lovely places eating marvelous food and drinking some of the delightful wine that Portugal produces!”

“I’ve just finished the North tour with Portugal Motorcycle Tours, it was perfect! Normally, I’d make my own way, this time I opted for a guided tour. Using a tour guide paid dividends..he chose the best routes, high-end hotels and the finest dining. I’d never have found any of them on my own. The route simply could not have been better. Thanks in particular to Miguel. I’ll be back as soon as I can!”

“To find out more about riding in Portugal I’m gonna meet with Miguel who does tours here… Today has truly being a magical experience! Riding here in Portugal is sublime!”
“Wow! What an amazing place! Great Food! Greater Company! And the Best Sunrise in all of Portugal! This Bed and Breakfast Tops the Charts!” "When you can see your hotel and motorcycles from the top of the castle! Zoom zoom zoom! Staying a night at a castle within walls, bucket list item!! This is our last night on the tour. What an exceptional tour!! Portugal is an incredible value. If you like wine, holy moly!! This is the place to be for sure! The food is awesome, the wine is amazing, but the countryside was made for motorcycles!!... Definitely a must do bucket list item!!" "Thanks Portugal Motorcycle Tours!!"

These trips were never a means to an end, but part of the love for my job. Looking back, they were the great inspiration for the foundation of Portugal Motorcycle Tour.

Map of Motorcycle tour in Portugal
  • Destination: Algarve
  • Distance / duration: 180 km / 4 h
  • Highlights: Cabo da Vicente, Algarve coast and beaches

Day 5 - Leave the mountains and head for the coast - Lisbon is waiting

You leave the Atlantic coast to give your motorbike a little run in the hinterland of the Algarve. You'll pass oak trees, charming villages and beautiful "quintas", the typical country houses of this region. Soon, however, the path leads you back to the Atlantic coast.  Fantastic views of the vast ocean and coastline await you on the way to Lisbon. You reach Cabo de Sines and the peninsula of Troia, where you take the ferry to Setúbal. After the ferry ride only a few kilometres separate you from the Portuguese capital. But before you finally get into the hustle and bustle of Lisbon, you stop for a moment at the "Christo Rei" monument. Enjoy the magnificent view over Lisbon and the "Ponte de 25 Abril", the impressive bridge over the Tajo. Incredibly beautiful!

  • Destination: Lisbon
  • Distance / duration: 260 km / 5 h
  • Accommodation: 4* Hotel in Lisbon
  • Highlights: Atlantic coast, Lisbon

Day 6 - Exploring Lisbon, the capital of Portugal

Today you will explore the capital of Portugal and its sights. The best way to get a feel for the atmosphere of Lisbon's historic centre is to walk through the Alfama barrio. Here you will find a labyrinth of unspoilt narrow streets and winding alleys with cobblestones, old houses, former palaces, fish stalls and pubs. Of course, the seafarers' monument and the Torre de Belèm are also worth visiting, as well as the impressive Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, and and and..... It is up to you whether you explore the city on your own or with our tour guide.

  • Highlights: Cathedral, Torre de Belén, tram line 28

Day 7 - Europe's westernmost point and lots of history

Before you say goodbye to the Atlantic, visit the lighthouse at Cabo da Roca, Europe's westernmost point, and take in the view of the ocean before heading inland, towards the medieval town of Obidos. Traditional salt mining in Rio Maior, the impressive monastery of Bathala and the pilgrimage site of Fatima are further points of interest on your way to the ancient Templar city of Tomar. The Monastery of Christ of the Knights Templar - a kind of monastery castle - towers over this small city and was also the spiritual centre of the region for centuries.

  • Destination: Tomar
  • Distance / duration: 270 km / 5 h
  • Accommodation: 4* Hotel in Tomar
  • Highlights: Cabo de Roca, Obidos, Rio Maior, Bathala Monastery

Day 8 - The Monastery of Christ, the fantastic roads in Portugal´s heartland and Porto

A real cultural highlight of the tour is the visit to the Convent of Christ (Convento do Christo). Right after breakfast, you visit the monastery with its integrated Christ Church and enjoy this cultural gem (UNESCO World Heritage Site). But the second part of today's agenda is also a challenge: beautiful panoramic roads with exceptional grip and curves, curves, curves... Wonderful views and traditional mountain villages as well as ancient, partly abandoned settlements in the sierra give you an idea of the splendour of times long gone. The last part of your journey will be on the main road to arrive in Porto in time.

  • Destination: Porto
  • Accommodation: 4* Hotel in Porto
  • Highlights: Convento do Christo, Sierra de Lousa, Porto

Day 9 - Porto - a river-side delight

Porto or Oporto means harbour, and Portugal's second-largest city developed into a harbour city as early as Roman times. Today, Porto is known for the wine of the same name from the region, the Rio Douro, which is transported to the world from its growing area to Porto. The colourful city, whose historic centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also has a lot to offer for you. Besides the magnificent views over the Douro River from the charming bridge "Ponte Dom Louis I", the port wine bodegas of Vila Nova de Gaia, countless squares and buildings invite you to stroll through. Very typical are the tiled house facades, like the vestibule of the Sao Beneto railway station or the facade of the Santo Ildefonso church. Your hotel is located in the middle of all these cultural gems and the historic centre.

  • Accommodation: 4* Hotel in Porto
  • Highlights: Dom Luis I Bridge, São Bento Railway Station, Livraria Lello bookshop.

Day 10 - Magical views of the Douro Valley

Today's tour has two headliners: the Douro River and the vines cultivated along its banks. Fortunately there are also wonderful roads winding along the river - sometimes above, sometimes beside it - so you have the opportunity to appreciate this wonderful landscape from all directions. Your destination for today is - it couldn't be any other way - a Quinta (winery), where you will learn everything about the cultivation of this world-renowned wine.

  • Destination: Douro Valley
  • Distance / duration: 200 km / 4.5 h
  • Accommodation: 4* Hotel in Douro
  • Highlights: Magnificent views in the Douro Valley, insights into port wine cultivation

Day 11 - The north-eastern border of Portugal and Serra da Estrella

You leave the Douro Valley to enter more vineyards. Grapes as far as the eye can see and now in autumn in the most beautiful colours - golden-yellow-red-orange-brown - what a feast for the eyes!

Where the Douro forms the border with Spain, you meet it again. Here the river becomes quiet, a couple of old villages with strong fortifications suggest that it was not always so quiet in this area. You enjoy the beautiful landscape, the fantastic views and of course the winding roads. It looks like they were built just for your riding pleasure!

Before you wake up from this motorcycling dream, you see the mountains on the horizon. You start to feel fresh energy as you breathe in the pleasant coolness of the mountain wind that carries you upwards, curve after curve, to your accommodation in the Serra da Estrela Nature Park.

  • Destination: Manteigas
  • Distance / duration: 290 km / 6 h
  • Accommodation: 4* Pousada in Manteigas
  • Highlight: Serra daEstrela

Day 12 - Explore Serra da Estrela

You extend your stay in Serra da Estrela by one day, because there are wonderful mountain passes and panoramas in the area. At Torre summit (1993m) you are at the highest point in Portugal, the ascent is one of the most beautiful motorbike routes in Europe!

The Vale do Zezere valley - once carved by a glacier - is another highlight in this mountain paradise. In the afternoon there is still time to relax in the hotel pool or to explore the mountain world of the Serra by foot. At the end of the day, you will be spoilt with culinary delights from the restaurant and the wine cellar.

  • Destination: Serra da Estrela
  • Distance / duration: 220 km / 5 h
  • Accommodation: 4* Pousada in Serra da Estrela
  • Highlights: Mountain panoramas of Serra da Estrela

Day 13 - Through the Alentejo over the Alcantara bridge to Zafra

Before you leave Serra de Estrela, you ride through beautiful roads and enjoy the view over the peaks. On the way out of the mountains, you ride past fields of grain, olive trees and old vineyards. Over the bridge of Alcantara, still the best preserved bridge from the Roman era, you are leaving Portugal. Back in Spain, you visit the once mighty fortress of Badajoz, then continue through the vineyards of Ribera del Guadiana to Zafra.

  • Destination: Zafra
  • Distance / duration: 360 km / 6.5 h
  • Accommodation: 4* Hotel in Zafra
  • Highlights: Bridge of Alcantara, Extremadura

Day 14 - Sierra Morena and the Guadalquivir Valley

On today's last day of riding, you can expect some great routes in Andalusia. The mountains of Sierra Morena and Móntes de Málaga provide two more motorcycling gems before you return to Málaga. During a joint farewell dinner, you will reflect on the impressions of the past week.

  • Distance / duration: 350 km / 6.5 h
  • Accommodation: 4* tour hotel in Málaga

Tour program:

Day 1: route sierra norte, day 2: route märvao (portugal), day 3: route serra da estrela (portugal), day 4: route valle de jerte, day 5: route extremadura, day 6: route serrania de ronda.

One of the surprising aspects of areas such as the Costa del Sol is that a few kilometers from the busy city lie untouched nature reserves. An example of this is the nature park "Sierra de Ronda"  that´s start just five kilometers north of the city. In this area you will find many white villages that have remained fairly authentic and where life seems to stand still. Take the time to enjoy this peaceful life for a cup of coffee and or an afternoon meal.

Day 2: Route Märvao

The fortified town of Marvão in Portugal is also called the eagle's nest . It is spectacularly situated at an altitude of 856 meters on a granite wall, on one of the peaks of the Serra de São de Mamede. It is precisely this nature park that makes this route so special. The imposing fortress walls of Marvão are made of granite and fit perfectly into the landscape to merge with the rocky ridge. Marvão is full of radiant white houses and is an ideal place to enjoy an extraordinary panorama of the plain and the mountains.

Day 3: Route Serra da Estrela

The largest mountain range on the Portuguese mainland, the Serra da Estrela, makes us small due to the enormous size of its imposing valleys, characterized by the white ice of glaciers formed round boulders. Discover the beauty of this overwhelming nature, experience the extraordinary hospitality of the Portuguese, taste the culture and enjoy the motorbike. If the scenery is breathtaking ... then it makes no sense to hurry on the motorcycle. With the Serra da Estrela, time takes on a different meaning and does not seem to be important anymore. Driving along the winding mountain roads surrounded by its boulders that seem to be hanging in the air, you will be taken into this breathtaking spectacle.

The Jerte Valley in the north of Extremadura is famous for the cherry blossoms and part of the well-known special motorcycle route that is driven in the spring. According to an age-old family use, cherries are grown in the traditional way on terraces carved into the high mountain slopes of the Jerte Valley, between crystal clear springs and pure air. Only such a unique place with a privileged microclimate can grow the best cherries in Spain. An incredibly unknown nature reserve with surprising variety, great motorways, overwhelming nature with its typical mountain villages that are located in this region.

Although Estremadura is a relatively poor and unknown region, it has long been the agricultural capital of Spain. With a large share of production of olives, wines and jamon based in this large open and mostly empty region. Typical of this region is that the yard has built partitions with the natural stone walls that you will encounter everywhere along the way. After the bend in the Serra da Estrela and Valle Jerte you will come across more straightforward roads with beautiful landscapes and colors but it is necessary to bridge this area to arrive in the Sierra Norte where you can indulge again what the engine is made for.

Day 6: Route Sierrania de Ronda

The last day and from the village of Peñaroyyo you will cross the Sierra Norte, also known as the nature reserve with the thousand turns, by bridging the valley between this Sierra Norte and Sierrania de Ronda you will arrive in the Sierra de las Nievas also called the snow mountains because in the winter months there can be snow on the tops of this mountain range. All in all a nice route with good roads where you will not be bored in what to see and the pleasure of driving your motorcycle.

How to Join a Motorcycle Tour in Portugal

Portugal is one of the best places on Earth to ride a motorcycle. We went on a self-guided motorcycle tour of Porto and fell in love with the place. This guide will explain everything you need to know to do the same and have an incredible Portugal motorcycle adventure.

Motorcycle Tour Portugal

Our Portugal motorcycle tour experience

We had just got married (August 2022) and planned to resume our round the world motorcycle trip a couple of months later in October where we’d fly back to Thailand and pick up our bike.

So, just married but temporarily bike-less, we wanted to go on a minimoon with a motorcycle but had no time to prepare or plan routes and hotels etc so renting was out. And as it was our minimoon we wanted to ride alone so a guided tour was out too.

That left self-guided tours… we signed up, booked our flights and had the time of our lives – it was perfect.

You can read about our ride and what it’s like touring in Portugal in our blog post:

How to Join a Guided or Self-Guided Motorcycle Tour in Portugal

Our self-guided tour was run by Freeride Spirit in the Porto region of Portugal. Here’s everything you need to know about doing the same.

Why join a motorcycle tour in Portugal?

Motorcycle tours take the stress out of planning a trip. They’re perfect for those who might not have the time to ride their own bike to a foreign country or spend hours researching routes, roads and hotels. Instead, that’s all sorted by professionals who know their country inside out.

All the leg work is taken care off so all you have to do is book a flight, turn up and have fun. Organised tours are a great and easy way of exploring countries on two wheels.

Guided vs self-guided?

Guided tours are led by a professional tour guide and there will usually be more riders with you. So, if you have a bunch of likeminded mates and enjoy the social aspect of riding in a group then this is a great option.

A self-guided tour can be done alone (or with friends too) but without a tour guide. Instead, you’ll get a pre-loaded GPS with the route that you’ll need to navigate and follow yourself each day.

Typically, both types of tours include the same setup such as the motorcycle, hotel, transfers etc.

Motorcycle Tour Portugal

What do I need for a tour in Portugal?

You’ll need a valid driver’s licence and passport and must be over 21. But that’s about it. All the riding gear including helmet, intercom, gloves, boots and suit are included. So just take clothes for the evening and money. It’s best to carry cash for small town cafes as not everywhere accepts bank cards – especially once out of the big cities. Also, don’t forget your swim suit as the hotels have pools.

What’s included?

The bike (a choice of KTM 790 or 1290 Adventure), luggage (two soft panniers and one hard lockable top box), full route on GPS, full riding gear, hotels (4 or 5 star), breakfast and dinner, airport transfers, road and emergency support and medical and vehicle insurance. It’s literally a turn up and ride service.

Motorcycle Tour Portugal

How much is a Portugal motorcycle tour?

We joined the Adventure tour in Portugal, which included a mix of on and off-road riding.

Our 5-day riding and 4-night accommodation tour was £2,180. With a pillion it’s £3,280.

Don’t forget, you’ll need to factor in your own flights (we paid around £150 each for a return ticket from Heathrow) and will need spending money for lunch and snacks.

There are options for shorter or longer tours too so you’re not limited to a 5 day riding tour. Tours can be customised to you personally too.

Motorcycle Tour Portugal

When to go?

Tours are run all year round, but the best time to visit is between spring and autumn as the weather is neither too hot or cold.

How hard is the riding?

The riding itself is not hard. The road route is full of incredible twists and turns, long sweepers and switchbacks. You will want motorcycle touring experience in order to make the most out of your time and trip. And there’s a lot of ground to cover, so if you’re not very confident the route may take you some time. However, if that is the case, you can always ask the company to give you a shorter ride.

The off-roading sections of the tour are optional and diverge and link back up with your main route. You receive a guide book to accompany your GPS and the book explains the routes and the off-road routes are graded by difficulty level. As we rode two-up we stuck to the easier level and that was fine for travel with a pillion. But, off-road experience would be very useful on a tour like this if you want to try the dirt tracks.

Even without the off-roading this would have still been an excellent tour though.

How long is the riding?

Expect to ride between 100-200kms per day dependent on how many off-road rides, detours and points of interest you include. We left our hotel around 10am every morning and arrived around 7pm, but that’s because we stopped a lot and wanted to see everything!

Motorcycle Tour Portugal

You’ll find a water fountain in all the little towns you pass – usually in the main square. So it’s a good idea to carry a thermal cold bottle and just keep topping it up.

Don’t forget to carry cash as little cafes won’t accept card.

Have a think about what you want to see in the day and the points of interest on your route the night before so that you don’t need to stop to figure it out on the way.

Make time for the highlighted routes, the people who planned these routes really know their stuff.

If you can, pay for a check in bag on your return flight as you’ll want to bring loads of bottles of wine back with you, so factor in what luggage bags you’ll be taking. Don’t forget that you can leave bags and luggage that you don’t want to take on the tour at the Freeride headquarters.

Of course, it is a motorcycle tour, but make time for all the little coffee shops and eateries along the way. They make the experience extra special.

If possible, book a few extra nights in a hotel in Porto for after the tour. It’s a beautiful city and a fantastic place to unwind after an awesome ride.

Carlos Azevedo - Tour Leader & Founder

CARLOS AZEVEDO

TOUR LEADER

Carlos Azevedo is a compulsive traveler. For the past twenty years, he has ridden over half a million kilometers, across more than a hundred countries and four continents.

From 2004 to 2008 he took upon himself the expedition "Until the End of the World, an Adventure from Pole to Pole" that he documented on his personal blog.

Carlos A is one of the founders of Motoxplorers, BMW Motorrad International Off-Road Instructor and tour guide certified by BMW Motorrad, he takes care of the development of new destinations for Motoxplorers tours.

He leads our tours to Iceland, Brazil, Central America or Southern Africa.

Carlos Martins was born in Africa and he has spent all his adult life trying to go back... preferably on a motorbike.  Motorcycling is a lifelong passion together with his love of remote and desertic landscapes.

He was born with the gift of mechanical improvisation: give him a Leatherman multi-tool and a piece of wire and he'll probably convince the most stubborn of malfunctioning engines to start again.

He is one of the founders of Motoxplorers and besides having ridden many hundreds of thousands of kilometers on and off road he is a BMW Motorrad Certified Off-Road Instructor, responsible for Motoxplorers Training Programs.

Carlos M leads our tours to Morocco, Iceland, and Southern Africa.

Ricardo Azevedo - Tour Leader & Founder

RICARDO AZEVEDO

Ricardo Azevedo  is gifted with an innate capacity to solve problems. Any problem....logistical, mechanical... he can sort most anything, anytime, anywhere, with whatever resources are available.

A designer by training and having ridden motorcycles since he was able to swing his leg over one, it is no wonder he ended up tinkering bikes for special purposes. Before joining us, he founded  " CMX Overland Engineering",  a small workshop that prepared bikes for rally-raid or round-the-world duties.

An experienced and talented rider, Ricardo brought home a podium finish in the 2012 Iberian BMW GS Challenge. At Motoxplorers, besides leading tours to Morocco, Iceland, and Southern Africa, he is responsible for the management of our rental fleet.

Enrique Díaz is a Vigo born Gallician that soon got bored of his academic life as a biologist and fell in love with a life on the road. His good spirits and highly developed intuition brought him to Lisbon where he integrated Motoxplorers project since its inception.

An accomplished photographer and globetrotter, he has traveled North and South America from Canada to Colombia, NorthWest Africa, and Australia. With hundreds of thousands of kilometers ridden, he is our specialist in Morocco, a country that he has visited dozens of times and that he knows intimately.

António Duarte  is one of the few Portuguese motorcyclists that can be declared as a profound connoisseur of our country's motorcycling hidden gems. An off-road expert on big-trail bikes, he regularly gets involved in the organization of trail ride events.

In 2007, António participated in the Raid D'Amitié Rally-Raid in Morocco and he counts hundreds of thousands of riding kilometers under his belt in places as remote as Western Sahara or Mauritania.

Gifted with an extraordinary knowledge of all things mechanical, a lot of traveling experience and contagious good spirits, "Zinga" has numerous friends all over the World but specialized in our Morocco Tours.

Leonard Mateko was born in Zimbabwe but he calls the whole of Southern and Eastern Africa his home. A qualified driver and mechanic, Leonard has been guiding overland tours from Cape Town or Nairobi for more than ten years.

Fluent in several local languages, his guiding credentials are certified by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and he has passed with the highest distinction the demanding certification process of South African Field Guides Association.

Leonard is an excellent field cook and has a deep knowledge of the region's wildlife. His qualifications and good nature make him highly sought for and we are very lucky to have him aboard our Southern Africa Tours .

NICOLAS DEDINI

Ricardo Monteiro  was born in Angola and maybe that is the reason for his compulsive need to get back to the Mother Continent. In fact, he now guides mostly our Moroccan and Southern Africa Tours.

Guiding and planning tours professionally for more than a decade, Ricardo has traveled most of World, sometimes on a 4x4 and always through incredibly beautiful sceneries.

His personal bike is an F800GS very well prepared for autonomous long distance touring but that has also been all over our beautiful country.

Nicolas Dedini  was born in Brazil and he is a natural born explorer, one of those afflicted with "L'horreur du domicile”, the horror of residing in just one place.

In love with nature, he is either traveling by motorcycle, bicycle or diving into some deep ocean.

Through the last five years, he has motorcycled solo dozens of countries in Europe, Africa, and South America. A gifted photographer and a special sort of writer, Nicolas keeps his adventures updated on his personal blog in Portuguese (well, sort of..):  "As viagens do Nicolas"

Besides scouting new destinations for Motoxplorers, Nicolas can help us lead tours in Brazil, South and Central America and Africa.

‚Tail of the Dragon‘ und ‚Route 66‘ auf Portugiesisch

Beliebte Strecken in Portugal
