Any Cuban journey starts in Havana, the capital of the country and a stunning World Heritage site where cobbled streets lead to polished Baroque churches, castles and palaces. Along Havana’s seafront, the Malecon, salsa wafts from the rebooted sound systems of cruising vintage Cadillacs and Buicks.

Cuba Private Travel can arrange for you to meet the stars of the Cuban Ballet Company or network with artists during the city’s famous Art Biennial. There is always plenty to do in Havana, from sporting events to spontaneous street entertainment and Cuba’s exuberant nightlife.

Where to go in Cuba

Cuba is a country of full of contrasts; grand and modest; vibrant and peaceful; wild and elegant; multi-faceted and always thought-provoking. Wherever you travel you will find a wealth of history as well stunning landscapes richly blessed by spectacular flora and fauna. All roads are easy to navigate and you will quickly discover that they are used as much by horse and cart as by the internal combustion engine.

What to do in Cuba

Whether you want to be active, cycling, hiking, snorkelling, rock climbing and wild swimming in the pools of cascading rivers, or prefer to gently explore Cuba’s culture and history, Cuba Private Travel knows how to delve deeper into this fascinating country. Cubans are keen sports fans, favouring boxing, basketball, baseball and volleyball. Surfing, sailing and deep-sea fishing can all be arranged. Our role at Cuba Private Travel is to take you to the places that will inspire you the most.

“Our trip was a family holiday, taking in, among other stops, Havana, Camaguey, Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad, and Viñales. It was everything we wanted from a family holiday; culture, history, activities, and relaxation. To be honest the best holiday we have ever had! Highlights: waterfall climbing and cave swimming with Alian, late night at the Santiago de Cuba carnival with Yenia, mountain hiking and cigar rolling with Duniel in Viñales and a tour of Havana in open-topped classic cars with Albert.”

Cuba is a world leader in sustainability and environmental protection, having preserved the island’s wild spaces consistently since Castro announced the country’s first reforestation programme way back in 1959. As a result, Wild Cuba is bountiful and Cuba Private Travel will help you to explore the diversity of the Country’s fourteen national parks and 1,000 square miles of protected marine environment.

Conservation in Cuba

Detached from excessive development for much of the twentieth century the island of Cuba is now attracting the attention of conservationists from around the world. One of seven countries to form part of The World Wildlife Fund's Coral Reef Rescue Initiative, Cuba's Jardines le la Reina area is a vitally important marine protection area that covers 684,000 hectares and provides safe refuge for critically endangered sharks, groupers and sea turtles. By using cutting edge technologies such as video, radar and the seeding of new coral nurseries, Cuba is creating protective models that are inspiring other Caribbean marine environments as well. Meanwhile conservationists are researching what it is that has made this area so resilient to climate change thus far.

Cuba is a signatory to the UN’s program to promote sustainable food production and land management. In the World Heritage site of Vinales Valley inhabitants use traditional agricultural techniques and since 1984 the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Research project has been an eco-community where progressive land use encourages reforestation and sustainable rural development. Cuba’s extensive forestry work protects woodlands, purifies water supplies and stops land erosion whilst also preserving environments for Cuba’s outstanding flora and fauna. Close to Havana, residents in Pogolotti Forest took matters into their own hands by planting trees and bamboo to create a beautiful parkland with cleaner waterways, stable soil and an on-going educational program that is inspiring new generations of conservationists.

What our clients say

Juliet Nelson

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT

The staff at Cubania were very efficient and very professional throughout. Excellent time keeping and very quick to respond to any queries - we would recommend them.

Fantastic knowledge of country, excellent communication, superb organisation/recommendations and brilliant guides/staff. Probably one of our best holidays and certainly the most interesting.

We booked our first bike tour to Cuba through Cubania Travel and have nothing but good to say about their service. The booking process was smooth and everything promised to us was delivered.

What a wonderful trip. Mary and I loved it. Thank you so much to you and Carla for your outstanding organisation. In short, you excelled. Moreover Jorge and Frank were an absolutely brilliant team - world-class and as good as we have ever experienced anywhere in the world.

James Strachan

Incredible knowledge and guide from Cubania

Simone O'Reilly

Good trip, and a lot more tiring than you'd think in the heat... lots to see and a very varied and different environment. Needed more snacks really at the stops is my only suggestion, but there was plenty of water. The guide and his crew were very good.

I did a guided ebike tour with Cubania travelling out of Havana to the gorgeous Cuban countryside and down to the south coast. The guide was great fun and the whole trip was organised seamlessly. Loved riding round the back roads and up a few hills with an electronic boost!

Claire Boobbyer

If you are looking to get a glimpse of the real Cuba, cycling through it with an expert guide is the way to do it. I couldn't recommend Cubania tours more.

Hannah Goodwin

I took a group of pals to Cuba and Cubania organised the whole trip. Right through from pre-planning to conclusion, it went really well and it was FUN as well as a success. Happy Travellers. Thank you everyone at Cubania, well done!

Excellent, tailored to our individual wishes. Advice provided as requested.

Andrew Heald

We loved the itinerary that Cubania put together for our trip to Cuba. Our guide and driver were so helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We discovered so much about Cuba's history and saw a lot of beautiful places. A real mixture of city culture and stunning countryside plus a very relaxed couple of days on Cayo Levisa.

A Warm Welcome to Havana, Cuba

Reserva Verdado : La Reserva Vedado - Havana, Cuba

Reserva Verdado : Iberostar Parque Central - Havana, Cuba

Our personalized arrival services begin as soon as you step off the plane in Havana. You’ll be met and escorted through immigration to beat the sometimes lengthy lines. Enjoy a soft drink or Cuba Libre while you wait for your luggage. Once through Customs in Cuba, your driver will be waiting for you in a vintage American car. As you make your way into the heart of Havana, you’ll get to know your Cuban guide, an engaging professional who will enrich your stay with their wealth of experience. Our guides are chosen for their excellent English and unique educational backgrounds including architecture, history, literature and the arts. Arriving in the heart of town, you’ll check in to your choice of hotel. Situated in the upscale Vedado district, where classic, mid-century Havana chic has been seemingly frozen in time, La Reserva is a charming boutique hotel with stylish guestrooms set in a handsome, splendidly restored villa. Or you can opt for a deluxe property like the Iberostar Parque Central ; with its elegant style and city-center location, it too is the perfect base for exploring this World Heritage City. Both the tropical garden at  La Reserva and Parque Central 's sky-lit lobby offer an inviting place to sit down with our Cuban Concierge and put the finishing touches on your itinerary – including what you might do this evening! For your first night in Cuba, we recommend you sample both a new comer and an old favorite. Starting with drinks at O’Reilly 304 , this new see-and-be-seen tapas bar is popular with residents and in-the-know expats for its fine cocktails and fish tacos. Then you might hop aboard a 3-wheeled Bici Taxi for the 15-minute ride through the lively streets of Central Havana to La Guarida . Opened in 1996 by Enrique and Odeisys Nuñez, this pioneering privately-owned paladar is still a Havana legend, famed for its Bohemian chic décor and innovative preparation of traditional Cuban dishes. After dinner, a vintage automobile will take you back to your hotel.

Classic Havana

This morning, you might choose to visit the historic cigar factory where world-famous Montecristo and Cohiba cigars are made using the finest tobacco - grown and dried in the western provinces of Cuba. Even if you’re not a cigar smoker, it’s fascinating to watch as they’re deftly hand-rolled, trimmed, banded and boxed with techniques that have changed little over the generations. A guided walking tour through Old Havana would also be good for your first day in Cuba; enriched by the keen insights, honest views and unique knowledge of your guide, you’ll be immersed in the rhythms of city life as you learn about its Baroque and Neoclassical monuments. Stroll along the centuries-old cobblestone streets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, mingling with local residents as you make your way through the city’s four principle town squares - from the charming Plaza de San Francisco and impressive Plaza de la Catedral to Plaza Vieja and the lively vendor-filled Plaza de Armas near the waterfront. In the afternoon, why not visit Finca Vigia ? Built in 1886, Ernest Hemingway purchased this hilltop residence in 1940 and lived here for nearly 20 years. It was here that Hemingway wrote two of his most famous works – For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea. Peering through its large open windows, you’ll see hundreds of the author’s personal belongings almost exactly as he left them when he departed Cuba for the last time in 1960. Then continue to Cojimar, the picturesque fishing village that inspired The Old Man and the Sea . A great place to cap off your private sightseeing would be at El Morro. Dating back to 1589, this impressive seafront fortress offers some of the most spectacular views of Havana! You’ll have time to refresh at your hotel before heading out to sample more of Cuba’s cuisine and nightlife. Chauffeured transportation in a vintage convertible is again included – but the evening is yours to dine where you like. One place to consider is Tierra , one of the city’s newest restaurants. It’s located inside La Fabrica del Arte Cubano, so after dinner you might explore this contemporary cultural center. Set inside an old factory and now filled with multiple galleries and performance spaces, it’s a trend-setting place where you can experience the cutting edge of Cuba’s vibrant cultural scene – from photography and painting to cinema and performance art.  Meals B

Cuisine + Culture of Cuba

For this morning, we could arrange for you to join a Cuban chef in one of Havana’s colorful markets. While this specially arranged experience would be designed to immerse you in the city’s daily life and Cuba’s culinary ways, it’s also a chance to learn about the island’s dual-currency system firsthand. Take in the variety of locally-sourced organic produce for sale, help to select some items, and then head over to a private home for a hands-on cooking lesson. Depending on the day’s market offerings and your purchases, you’d learn recipes and techniques for preparing favorite Cuban dishes – like grilled seafood or chicken accompanied by black beans and rice or other side dishes featuring plantain, potato or cassava. Over lunch, congenial conversation with your host and chef might range across a variety of topics like the roots of Cuban cooking and modern culinary influences from around the world. This afternoon, why not focus on the arts? We have close personal relationships within the local arts and design communities, so we could arrange two gallery visits geared to your personal interests – from painting and sculpture to photography and printmaking. And whether it’s the gallery of an established artist or the studio of a young up-and-comer, the opportunity for casual conversation promises a deep genuine look into the Cuban art scene. Next, you might enjoy a private tour of the National Museum of Fine Arts (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes), highly regarded for its collection of Cuban art from the Colonial era to the 21st century. Or if you prefer, you could spend time at the Instituto Superior de Arte, first established in 1961 and still the leading art academy in Cuba. Now situated in an architecturally unique complex of domed brick buildings, you’ll have a chance to meet the talented students and see some of their work. This evening, your chauffeured vintage automobile will take you to the restaurant of your choice. Tonight we recommend reservations at Doña Eutimia ; with roots dating back to the early 1970’s, this culinary and cultural landmark is well known for its fine preparation and presentation of traditional Cuban cuisine. After dinner, you might enjoy a couple drinks at the Sociedad Cultural Rosalia de Castro . Here in a charming 18th-century building in Old Havana, the club’s house band will entertain you with music inspired by Cuba’s renowned Buena Vista Social Club. Meals B+L

Architecture + Dance of Cuba

After breakfast, your guide can take you on an architectural tour beyond the landmarks of Old Havana.  Venture farther afield to learn about Cuba’s wealth of architectural diversity - from American-inspired mid-century modernism to the striking Constructivist style of the Russian Embassy. This afternoon, you might join one of the city’s leading dance professionals - a key figure in preserving the legacy of Yoruba Andabo , the legendary Rumba troupe of musicians, percussionists and dancers. Equal parts history lesson and dance class, this intimate experience would be a highlight of your Cuba adventure! Before returning to your hotel, you could spend time along Callejón de Hamel. Adorned with brightly colored murals, this narrow alley in Central Havana has emerged as a thriving social-community project devoted to Afro-Cuban music and dance – including Rumba. Beyond the street theater, the neighborhood is home to shops and cafes and you might cap off your stay with that most refreshing of Cuban cocktails – El Negron . For your final dinner in Cuba, we suggest reservations at La Esperanza . Opened in 1995, this Havana legend is a chance to experience pre-revolutionary Cuba. With classic Cuban music adding to the ambience, you’ll savor farm-fresh cuisine in an intimate setting that’s been authentically furnished and decorated like a 1950’s Havana home. The experience is simply magical and getting there and back in your chauffeured vintage car just adds to the fun! If you’re not too tired, you might take in the show at the Tropicana, the legendary cabaret that first opened its doors in 1931. Although it has become extremely popular with tourists, the show still features the extravagant costumes and choreography that have mesmerized club-goers from Nat King Cole to Jack Nicholson. Regardless of the dining and entertainment options you pursue this evening, we include chauffeured transportation in a vintage American car.  Meals B

The Cultural Cuba guide and driver were amazing! They were so knowledgeable and friendly. They felt like family! We highly recommend visiting Cuba and can’t wait to return.

I spoke with my clients and the word “outstanding” was used several times. It was a wonderful and special trip for all! Cultural Cuba has a great team!

The trip was exceptional. Our guide was the best we have ever had, and we have traveled quite a bit. I could see Cuba in an entirely new light regarding its history, culture, and people. Thank you.

Everything was perfect. Our guide and our driver made us feel so welcome. Our fathers both left Cuba in the 1950s, so being able to see the country was a gift for us.

We had a fabulous time in Havana! We were able to get a tremendous sense of a great country with lots of history and such potential. Now you have set the gold standard for long weekends away!

Everything was top notch. The restaurants were all superb. We left Cuba with a clear mind and a love for the culture, food, and people. We would definitely love to visit again!

Terrific trip! Great experience for people that have traveled all over the world. The hotel was really comfortable and deluxe. We would highly recommend Cultural Cuba. Thanks for a great birthday celebration!

Our five-day trip was completely effortless! The perfect balance of activities and downtime. I can’t even think of anything else I would have wanted to do if we had more time. Go to Cuba with Cultural Cuba!

Thank you for a marvelous trip. ALL aspects of the trip; hotel, meals, guide, driver, and selected itinerary components were perfect. I can summarize by saying we all had an amazing time.

Just got back from Cuba. It was even better than expected. Accommodations were lovely and as portrayed, the guide was incredible, the food was superb and the experiences/tours were all wonderful!

Culture and customs.

With   Spanish ,   African   , and Creole influences, modern Cuba is home to so many cultural components – some of which don’t feel super ‘modern’ at all!

You won’t be surprised that Cubans love music and dancing – with everything from Afro-Cuban rhythms to classic melodies filling the air in clubs, bars, restaurants, and on street corners. The modern arts are also alive here, with ballet, contemporary dance, and film rising in popularity – so much so, Havana is now home to internationally recognized film, literature, and music festivals.

Living in a Communist country means Cubans sometimes go without the luxury items that many Westerners take for granted, with certain foods and consumer goods not available. Despite this, events like birthdays, holidays, and marriages are celebrated with gusto, with special meals, music, and dance featuring. This love of life is also evident in the street parties, festivals, and fiestas that are celebrated throughout the year. Coffee, cigars, and rum flow freely, and people dance to the sound of trumpets and guitars in city streets.

Life in the cities and life in rural areas can be quite different, but the pace of living is consistently Cuban – you’re on local time now, so go with the flow. Experience Cuban culture on our 8 day Beautiful Cuba trip.

History and government

Ancient history.

Before the arrival of the Spanish in 1492, Cuba was home to Mesoamerican cultures, including the indigenous Guanajatabey and Taino people. The Guanajatabey were hunter-gatherers and fishers, and Taino communities also harvested yuca, cotton, and tobacco. Spanish colonialist Bartolome de las Casas estimated that Taino populations in Cuba had reached 350,000 by the end of the 15th century.

By then, Christopher Columbus had landed in Cuba and claimed the land for   Spain, naming it Isla Juana. In 1511, Diego Velazquez de Cuellar founded Baracoa, the first Spanish settlement in Cuba, and three years later what’s now known as Havana was built.

20th century

In 1902, after periods under Spanish, British, and United States rule and involvement in the Spanish–American war, Cuba got its independence. Despite the economy booming, leaders at this time ruled through corruption and control. This was until revolutionary Fidel Castro led a 9000-strong guerrilla army into Havana in 1959, forcing military dictator Fulgencio Batista to flee. Castro became the leader and his brother, Raul, his deputy. What followed was an attempt by the United States to overthrow Castro’s communist rule at the Bay of Pigs, and tension and trade embargoes following the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Standing alongside Castro as an equally prominent political figure, Che Guevara (although Argentinean) holds a very important place in Cuban history. A revolutionary, author, doctor, and military leader, Guevara played a pivotal role in the guerrilla campaign leading up to the Cuban Revolution and the defense of the Bay of Pigs, as well as in diplomatic relations, up until his death in 1967. It’s impossible not to notice the reverence for Guevara when visiting Cuba, with street art, statues, and museums dedicated to the man Cubans simply call ‘El Che’ found all over the country.

In April 2011 Fidel Castro was succeeded as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba by his brother Raul Castro. Cuba’s political relationship with other countries, including its close neighbors, is ever-evolving, with the US recently beginning to ease restrictions on trade, tourism, and other industries. But a snapshot of 50 years of isolation remains in the cars, architecture, and culture that is a contemporary Cuban street. Learn about Cuba's fascinating past on our 15 day Best of Cuba adventure.

Eating and drinking

Cuba may not have culinary fame compared to some of its neighbors, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be missing out on some great food during your time here. Cuba typically doesn’t have access to a wide range of ingredients, so your dining experience may not be as varied as you’d expect from some other   nearby destinations. Regardless, there are some Central American favorites that are definitely worth trying. Try out the local cuisine on our 8 day Cuba Highlights tour.

What to eat in Cuba

Pastelitos These small pastries can be either sweet or savory. Cream cheese, guava, and beef are the most popular fillings and make for a cheap, tasty meal on the run. Think empanadas, Cuban style.

Cuban sandwich Otherwise known as a mixto, this sandwich is a simple snack that has made its way north into Florida and has become one of the quintessential images of Cuban food beyond its borders. Ham, pork, cheese, mustard, and sometimes salami layered between bread and grilled – what’s not to like?

Ropa vieja Not only is this one of the national dishes of Cuba, but it’s also found all over the Caribbean, in Spain, and even the Philippines! It may literally translate to ‘old clothes’, but that’s definitely not what it tastes like – slow-cooked pulled beef with vegetables, usually served with maduros (fried plantains), black beans, and rice.

Fritura de maiz These deep-fried cheese and cornmeal fritters are popular street food snacks in Cuba. A great choice for vegetarians; throw a couple of these back and you’ll be feeling the Cuban spirit.

Moros y cristianos

Rice and beans is ot just rice and beans. Black beans and white rice are added to a base of peppers, garlic, and onion and simmered with herbs, creating a flavorful addition to any meal and served up at virtually every Cuban restaurant you'll come across.

If you're a little bit peckish and are on the go, seek out some tostones. These twice-fried plantain chips are very popular in a lot of Latin America countries and are an easy (and often cheap) snack.

Although flan is known all around Central and South America as an essential dessert, Cuban flan has a slightly different spin. It's made with evaporated and sweetened condensed milk, giving it a thicker and creamier caramel custard finish than fresh milk varities. Get ready for a seriously delicious sugar high.

Coppelia ice cream Line up with locals to savor a sweet scoop from Coppelia ice cream parlor. This Cuban institution serves tried and true flavors like chocolate and vanilla as well as exotic favorites like mango and coconut.

What to drink in Cuba

Rum The tipple of choice in Cuba is rum, obviously. Savour some Havana Club straight up, have it mixed in a minty mojito, or sip on a Cuba Libre – rum, cola, and lime.

Coffee Cuban coffee is of legendary quality, so be sure to get your caffeine hit with a small but rich cup of liquid gold. Drink it like the locals do, as a cafecito or Cafe Cubano. This type of espresso-style coffee is usually sweetened with raw cane sugar and stirred in with the first drips of espresso to get the best result.

Geography and environment

This island nation sitting in the Caribbean Sea is home to a diverse range of environments: rolling hills to tobacco plantations, beaches, and coral reefs to tropical rainforests. With more than 20% of the island covered with natural parks, there's incredible biodiversity, making it a great place for eco-adventures, hiking, snorkeling, and diving.

Large cities like Havana evoke a time gone by. Grand buildings dating back to the 1950s exude a fading beauty, which makes for great photographs but can also make daily life quite difficult. Due to a lack of building materials, new housing, and infrastructure are rare, making living conditions quite cramped for Cuban city dwellers. Rural life offers more space and a quieter pace, but reduced access to services. Regardless of where you holiday in Cuba, the people are generally kind and hospitable in both the big cities and small towns. Wander the magnificent landscapes, both natural and manmade, on our 8 day One Week in Cuba adventure.

Cuba may not be known for its shopping, but look closely and you’ll find lots of unique souvenirs to take home as a reminder of your holiday. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import some items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, for example, have strict quarantine laws. The United States also has restrictions on the amount of tobacco and alcohol that can be brought back from Cuba.

What to buy

Art Cuba has a keen appreciation of the fine arts, so it’s not hard to find unique artworks by up-and-coming local artists being sold at galleries and markets. It also makes for a meaningful memento of your time away.

Cigars The cliche is unsurprisingly true – cigars are everywhere in Cuba. Be sure to buy cigars from authorized sellers, as fakes are common. Purchasing straight from the factory is usually best.

Coffee Cuban coffee is top quality, so stock up before you leave to enjoy a taste of Cuba in the comfort of your own home. Do check, however, if your country of origin allows plant-based materials to pass through quarantine.

Music With such a rich musical heritage, Cuba is a great place to pick up a hand-crafted instrument or, if traveling light, a CD or a local artist’s info to add to your playlist.

Do some serious souvenir shopping on our 8 day Premium Cuba tour.

Festivals and events

Havana international jazz festival.

Local and international artists head to Havana every January to become a part of the happening jazz scene. From the impressive Teatro Nacional de Cuba to the city streets, the sweet sounds of jazz fill the air of Havana for the duration of the festival.

Habanos Cigar Festival

In February, cigar connoisseurs gather to celebrate their love of the best cigar in the world – the Habano. With tastings, visits to plantations and factories, master classes, and cigar-rolling contests on offer, this festival will intrigue curious travelers and delight cigar enthusiasts.

Santiago de Cuba Carnival

Watch this historic city come alive in July with street parades full of vibrant costumes, drums, and dancing. This epic public celebrations date back to at least the 17th century and are held all around the country, but Santiago de Cuba hosts the biggest, brightest, and most traditional of them all.

Cuba travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Cuba?

Cuba's subtropical climate is ideal for exploration, with most places catching the cool trade winds that blow in from the coast, providing pleasant year-round temperatures. June, July and August are usually the hottest months – the dry season runs from November to April and the wet season from May to October. Even in the rainy season, downpours are short and shouldn't impede travel plans. Tropical storms and hurricanes are more prevalent in September and October but rarely cause problems for travelers.

Do I need a visa to travel to Cuba?

Tourists of most nationalities require a 'Tourist Card' which is similar to a tourist visa. These can be obtained through travel agents in your home country, or directly from Cuban embassies and consulates. Depending on the airline you are traveling with to Cuba, you may also be able to purchase the tourist card at the airport from the airline on the day of your departure – please check with your airline for more information.

If you are a US citizen, American permanent resident, or hold any type of American Visa and are considering traveling to Cuba, please refer to the US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs website –  travel.state.gov  – for the latest advice.

We recommend traveling to Cuba via Canada, Europe, and South or Central America. Travelers who have been to Cuba are ineligible to participate in the ESTA Visa Wavier Program and must apply for a tourist visa to enter or transit via the United States.

Remember to check the entry requirements for any destinations you will travel or transit through both to and from Cuba.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Cuba?

As most Cubans live modest lifestyles, leaving a tip for good service is a great idea and welcomed.

There is almost always free entertainment in bars and restaurants; the musicians and singers are usually not paid by the venue, so we encourage you to tip when you have enjoyed the performance. Tour leaders, restaurant workers, hotel porters, cleaning staff and taxi drivers will appreciate a small sum – but be sure to tip in Cuban pesos as foreign currency isn’t easily exchanged in Cuba.

It’s important to carry around small denominations of currency to leave tips during your holiday, so you can tip an amount you feel comfortable with.

What is the internet access like in Cuba?

Internet access isn't widespread throughout Cuba, but availability is improving. The internet can sometimes be accessed from government departments and larger hotels, and main squares in many cities now have wi-fi accessibility. You will need to purchase an internet card from certain hotels and outlets to gain access in any location, including in public areas.

Please note that although connectivity is improving, the connection may still be slow, some websites may be censored, and the cost is typically quite high.

Can I use my cell phone while in Cuba?

Your cell phone may or may not work while in Cuba, depending on what type of phone you have. Before leaving your home country, ensure roaming is activated with your provider, but be aware that your phone may not get reception due to Cuba having the lowest cell phone network penetration in Latin America.

If you intend to activate global roaming while in Cuba, be sure to check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur when using this option, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in Cuba?

Public toilets are rare in Cuba, but western-style flushable toilets are available in hotels, bars, and restaurants. Bringing your own toilet paper and hand soap or hand sanitizer is recommended as often these are not provided. Due to import restrictions, toilet seats can be considered a luxury and may be missing from some facilities.

What will it cost for a...?

Cuba's unit of currency is the peso (CUP). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Can of soft drink or bottle of water = 1-2 CUP
  • Cup of coffee = 1.50 CUP
  • Cocktail = 2-5 CUP
  • Meal in a nice restaurant = 120+ CUP
  • One hour of wi-fi = 25 CUP

Can I drink the water in Cuba?

It's not advisable to drink water from the tap in Cuba. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable bottle or canteen with filtered water if you can – your group leader will provide larger and less disposable water containers for refills on private transport days when they have the resources available. It's also best to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Cuba?

Some credit cards are accepted in Cuba (Visa and Mastercard are usually more widely accepted), although some cards linked to US banking institutions won't be accepted. Debit cards (even Visa debit) generally have problems working. We recommend you bring multiple cards from different banks to be sure you have access to funds. Ensure you also have enough cash and other forms of payment, as credit card facilities may not always be available.

What is ATM access like in Cuba?

ATMs are accessible in large cities like Havana and Santiago de Cuba but are rare and almost non-existent in other parts of Cuba. Ensure you have other payment options available in case you cannot access an ATM while traveling.

What is the weather like in Cuba?

Cuba enjoys Caribbean vibes all year round, and sits below the Tropic of Cancer, so you’ll enjoy a tropical climate with north-easterly trade winds that blow year-round.

May to October is usually considered the wet season, with higher maximum temperatures each day (around 90°F) and more sunlight each day, averaging 10 hours. September and October is hurricane season in the region, and this time of year is usually hot and overcast, with a higher chance of rainfall.

November to April is usually the drier season in Cuba, with maximum temperatures sitting around 79°F and an average of 8 hours of sunlight each day. The winter months are clearer, slightly more humid, and more comfortable than summer.

Is Cuba safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Cuba has made some significant steps in recent years to ensure LGBTQIA+ rights in the country. Homosexuality is legal and accepted in Cuba, and there are some anti-discrimination laws in place for employment, service provisions, and gender identity. However, same-sex marriage recognition is still pending, and stigma still remains in some parts of society, especially in rural areas.

The Cuban National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) works to support the LGBTQIA+ community in Cuba and hosts rallies to educate and advocate.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Cuba accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

As Cuba has not had the same infrastructure development as other countries, you may find some mobility challenges when traveling. Havana’s streets are often crowded, and sidewalks can at times be rugged or even nonexistent. This is the same with other cities and towns around the country. Also, a lot of public transportation isn’t geared toward travelers who use a wheelchair, so private travel may be the only option to get around.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

" Our trip with Cuban Adventures exceeded all of our expectations. We normally do not travel on group tours but we are so glad we did. We learned so much from the guide about the history and the culture and the local hot spots to go to for food, drink and dancing. Thank you for making our trip to Cuba Amazing! Private Tours

If you can't find a group tour that works with your schedule, or are looking for something more personalised, you can purchase any of our regular tour itineraries as private tours- you pick the departure date and the tour is just for your group. Just tell us how many people you will be, and what start date you want for your private Cuba tour. We can quickly provide you with a quote, and the price will be much more economical than customizing an itinerary for you.

Private tours for small groups of 1-2 people are generally much higher than the group tour price, but at 6-8 people the price is generally at or lower than the web price. For example, if the price for the 8 day Original tour is US$700/person , the private tour price for a group of 2 could be US$1400/person .

Custom Tours

We can help you design a unique itinerary specific to your needs. All you need to do is fill out our custom tour request form and our specialist staff will be able to put it together for you.

These tours generally start at US$3000 for a standard tour for small groups (1-4 people), the per person price decreases as the group size increases.

Here are some elements of a tour in Cuba for you to consider...

Accommodation for your tour

We prefer to use casas particulares on our tours, these are Cuban guesthouses or Bed & Breakfasts and range from family homes to luxury boutique hotels, there are options for every travel style. Apart from directly supporting local Cuban families, staying in the guesthouses is fun and interesting, and most of our travellers find that it greatly enhances their experience of visiting Cuba. We are sometimes able to offer hotels as an option but due to our Responsible Travel policy, we do not recommend them. On a custom tour you can choose from 3 different categories of casas particulares.

All rooms have have en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning. For more information visit our Cuba accommodations page .

Standard - Budget-friendly, simple but clean and safe. Air conditioners and hot water heaters may be less modern. Casas tend to be run by a local family.

Comfort - Slight step up from standard, modern "split" air conditioners, better mattresses, natural light, better linens, Usually around US$20/night more than standard.

Premium - Interiors far above the vast majority of private guesthouses in Cuba. Usually only available in Havana. Each of these properties is unique and the characteristics cannot be easily generalized. Higher quality amenities and décor, better linens, services such as room service and wifi. From US$100-300/night more than standard.

Activities on your tour

There is a great variety of activities, excursions, and day trips that are possible at each destination in Cuba. Our normal advice is to give yourself as much flexibility as possible during the tour so that you can change and choose activities along the way. Most activities can be easily arranged by your tour guide once you are in Cuba. This also gives you a chance to consult with your local tour leader about which activities he/she most recommends.

Some specific activities however are best arranged ahead of time, particularly for large groups it can be more convenient to have some activities already included and programmed into the itinerary. If there are any activities you definitely don't want to miss and we can include them in your custom tour package.

We know almost every nook and cranny in Cuba and hundreds of special guests have traveled with us to explore the island, focusing on the activities and destinations that most interest them. You could spend months exploring Cuba's cities, National Parks, natural areas, beaches and mountain landscapes. Please read the information below and when you're finished, fill out our Cuba  custom tour request  and we'll be in touch very soon.  Or you can begin the process by sending an email to  [email protected]  or calling (208) 770-3359, 9:00-5:00 Pacific Time.

PRE-DESIGNED CUSTOM TOURS or PRIVATE JOURNEYS:

These are tours where we have designed a set itinerary that is available for small groups of 1-6, on a custom schedule basis. Our  Classic Cars, Rum & Cigars Tour  is one example. We have some other  Cuba private tours , seen below, that we can organize for your small private group.

*Note that most of our  scheduled tours  can be made into a private journey for your group. These are artfully designed itineraries and you can be assured you will see many highlights of Cuba on any of these trips.

CUSTOM TOURS:

Some people prefer something completely custom and want to travel in their own private group. Take advantage of our knowledge and let us design the perfect private Cuba tour for you! Unlike most other companies, we can include activities such as sea kayaking and cycling in your custom tour, using our fleet of kayaks and bikes. We can also design tours with a special focus in mind if you have a passion to explore. A few ideas for Cuba custom tours include:

  • Art Deco Architecture of Havana

  • Festivals of Cuba - Contact us for Specific Ideas
  • Photography - Visions of Cuba
  • Cuba's Medical Genius and Challenges

Let us know what you want in a Cuba private tour and we would love to discuss it with you!

Note about advanced planning:

If you have specific accommodations in mind, it’s best to plan a minimum of 3-6 months in advance. Trip planning in Cuba requires more time than in some countries however, if you’re not so choosy about where you stay, a shorter planning cycle is possible.  We ask that you give us at least 2 months before you want to depart on your Cuba custom tour so we can help plan your trip properly. If you don’t have that sort of time window available we’ll do our best, but your accommodation choices may be more limited.  This is particularly true during the high season of November through April.

CUBA CUSTOM AND PRIVATE TOUR IDEAS

Havana   -  Viñales   -  Eastern Cuba   -  Trinidad & Cienfuegos

Custom Cuba Itinerary Ideas that include Havana

(Specific Activities can be tailored to your wishes.)

LONG WEEKEND IN HAVANA

  • Thursday – Fly to Havana.  Direct and flights are available.  Try and arrive by 11:00 AM if possible.  Afternoon guided walking tour of Old Havana.  Evening out at a Paladar, overnight in a casa particular for duration of tour.
  • Friday – We head to Cojimar for a private garden tour, cooking class and lunch!  Then we visit Ernest Hemingway’s house.  We return to Havana city and visit two of Hemingway’s favorite places, La Floridita and La Bodeguita del Medio, along with walks on the city streets.   After dinner we’re off to the popular Fabrique des Artes where art, music and a lively Cuban night scene all merge.
  • Saturday – We start out with a dance lesson, learning the basic moves and steps of Salsa.  It’s a fun way to get the blood going and hips shaking.  Then we walk along the seaside malecon, to lunch along the water.  After lunch we head to the  Museum of Fine Arts in central Havana (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana).  Dinner out at a fabulous Paladar, then we head to a low-key evening music performance at one of Cuba’s music institutions set in an outside garden.
  • Sunday – After breakfast, we visit a cigar factory to learn the fascinating process needed to turn leaves to cigars.  Then we head to the Callejon de Hammel – a colorful street that has become the center for Afro-Cuban music on Sundays.  Lively peformances and loud street art make for a fascinating visit.  We walk to a nearby Paladar for lunch.  In the afternoon, depending on your interests, we could visit a garage where classic American cars from the 1950’s are restored; arrange another dance lesson;  find more music; for families, head to Coney Island amusement park;  visit the University and meet with an educator to learn about the Cuban education system, etc.
  • Monday – head to the airport and fly home.

HAVANA & SOUTH CENTRAL CUBA

  • Day 1 - Arrive Havana, afternoon walking tour of old Havana.  Evening scheduled as desired.
  • Day 2 - Full day to explore Havana.
  • Day 3 - Drive east to Hemingway Museum, then continue towards Playa Larga.  Optional visit to the Zapata National Park Cuban crocodile breeding center.  Lunch in Palpite or Playa Larga.  Optional visit to a community art school.  Arrive Playa Larga on the Bay of Pigs with time to relax, visit the beach and see small-town Cuba.
  • Day 4 - Drive southeast to one of our favorite snorkeling or diving spots on the Bay of Pigs.  Enjoy a couple hours in the Caribbean to snorkel and learn about the region’s reef ecosystem.  Continue to the town of Playa Giron and visit the Museum of the 1961 invasion.  Lunch in town.  Continue another couple hours to Cienfuegos.

HAVANA & NORTH CENTRAL CUBA

  • Day 3 - Drive east to Hemingway Museum, then continue along the north coast to the colonial city of Matanzas.  There’s a historic electric railroad line that can be woven into today for a 2-4 hour ride through rural Cuba and the town of chocolate fame, Hershey, Cuba.  End the day in the beautiful town square of Matanzas and stay at the lovely Hotel Velasco.
  • Day 4 - Depending on yesterday’s timing and your interests, spend the morning visiting some of the city’s museums which include a fascinating museum of a pharmacy among others.  It’s also possible to visit nearby Varadero, the original beach-resort economic engine of Cuba co-developed with Canadians in the early 1990’s (although to be honest, we don’t recommend this).  Continue east for about a 3.5 hour drive to the small colonial town of Remedios which has several colonial-style boutique hotels, a tranquil town plaza and easy-going pace.
  • Day 5 - Explore Remedios this morning and if desired, a nearby sugar museum and train ride.  Continue on to Sancti Spiritus, another vibrant town with beautiful colonial architecture, Cuba’s oldest bridge and many museums.
  • Day 6 - Continue south to the coast and visit Trinidad (allow another one or two days) or return to Santa Clara and fly out on a late afternoon flight.

SPECIAL INTEREST IN HAVANA - Do you have a specific interest you would like your Cuba custom tour based around?  If so, we can put it together for you!

  • Havana’s Architecture:   An eclectic collection of colonial, art nouveau, art deco and 1950’s modern, the architecture of Havana is fascinating.  With a specialized guide, explore many of the most remarkable buildings including the Bacardi building, the Capitolo, National Theatre, Rivera Hotel, Hotel Nacional, palaces of old Havana, and much more.  This can be a one or two-day focus, depending on the level of your interest.
  • Havana by Night:   Havana comes alive around 10pm with a wide variety of musical venues from salsa to son, jazz to rock, bolero and rumba and more!  Explore nocturnal Havana, then have a schedule that starts late morning and if desired, add dance lessons in the afternoons!  People-to-People activities with musicians and performers will be arranged.
  • Havana’s Jewish History and Culture Today:   Cuba’s Jewish heritage is a fascinating story.  A visit to the Jewish Heritage Center to meet with the Director and staff gives insight into the Jewish community of the city and country.  The excellent exhibit on the holocaust is a must-see.  Finally, visit one or two of the city’s synagogues, meet with members of the local Jewish community and learn.
  • Cuba’s Christian Heritage:   Churches and cathedrals are found throughout Cuba, most from the colonial era of Spanish rule.  They went largely dormant from the time of the Victory of the Revolution (1959) until about a decade ago. There have been several Papal visits in the last 15 years and a fair number of Cubans are practicing Catholics, or other sorts of Christians.  Visit some of the beautiful churches, meet with clergy and learn about Christianity in Cuba today.
  • Education, Conservation & Science:   Cuba has a vibrant education system, an active government land and marine conservation program and of course many scientific institutions.  Visit the Jimenez Nunez Foundation to learn about Cuba’s conservation programs.  Visit with professors at the University of Havana and other specialists in these fields.

VIÑALES & THE WEST

Custom Cuba Itinerary Ideas that include Viñales

The Pinar del Rio Province is to tobacco what Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Napa Valley are to wine.  If you’re a cigar aficionado, this should be on your list.  Beyond tobacco, the region is also home to some of Cuba’s most stunning scenery with limestone mogotes piercing the sky.  While the town of Viñales itself crawls with tourists, it’s not hard to get off the beaten path to the small towns along the northern coast, the city of Pinar del Rio and the mountain resorts of Soroa and Las Terrazas.

VIÑALES EXPLORER CUSTOM TOUR:

  • Day 1 - Depart Havana, drive to Las Terrazas.  Visit this mountainous region that was reforested and resettled after the revolution.  Hikes from one to three miles are available in the area along with a history of the coffee trade and slavery.  From here continue to Viñales for dinner and overnight.
  • Day 2 - Spend the day hiking and exploring the Viñales valley with tobacco farms, trails and natural wonders.  In the late afternoon go to the town of Pinar del Rio for a walking tour and overnight.
  • Day 3 - A morning visit to the legendary Robaina tobacco farm is in order for cigar aficianados with the option of enjoying lunch and one of the estate cigars.  Afterwards, return to Havana by late afternoon. Note: For more ideas on options in this area, check out our “ Western Cuba Bike Tour ".
  • Day 5 - A full day exploring Cienfuegos and the vicinity.  Optional kayak tour available.  Visit the Cienfuegos Botanical Gardens, Laguna Guanaroca, or more.
  • Day 6 - Drive to Trinidad, one of Cuba’s finest colonial towns, to explore the cobbled streets, vibrant music scene and history.
  • Day 7 - Another day exploring Trinidad and hiking in the nearby Topes de Collantes National Park if desired.

EASTERN CUBA

Custom Cuba Itinerary Ideas in the East

Compared to Havana and the western parts of Cuba, very few travelers venture to the east.  This is more rugged, less populated, far from the political influence of Havana yet closer to the heart of the Revolution that started in the Sierra Maestre mountains that span the region.

NORTHEAST CUBA – Mountains, Bays, and Chan Chan:

  • Day 1 - Arrive Holguin airport (most flights arrive midday).  On arrival transfer to small fishing village of Gibara about an hour north to stay at one of the nicest boutique hotels in all of Cuba.  Afternoon walking tour with our local guide.
  • Day 2 - Morning visit to the local cigar factory.  Then a visit to the Natural History Museum, followed by lunch at one of our favorite paladars.  In the afternoon, visit a local cave for a one-hour walk with a local speleologist.  Overight Gibara.
  • Day 3 - Travel two hours east to the small fishing town of Puerto Padre for a feast of treats.  We visit a rum factory in the morning, followed by lunch on an organic farm.  In the afternoon we have a walking tour of the town and a special music performance by a jazz group that carries on the tradition of Emelio Salvador, legendary Cuban pianist.  Optional overnight in Puerto Padre at a Casa Particular, or drive about 1.5 hours back east to Holguin and overnight at a Casa Particular or hotel.
  • Day 4 - Leave Holguin and travel to Cuba’s highest waterfall!  It’s a beautiful place with a couple of different hiking options.  One is a 600 meter walk over moderate terrain to the top of the highest falls then returning to the top of the lower falls for a swim.  The other is a much more difficult hike that descends to the bottom of the falls and requires about 2 -2.5 hours for the roundtrip.  Local guides provide interesting stories about the local flora.  From here continue to a mountainous resort, Pinares de Mayeri for a relaxing night in mountain air.
  • Day 5 - Descend from the mountains and spend an hour or so exploring the small town of Mayeri.  Visit Cayo Saetia, a small seaside resort that was built by the Communist Party in the 1970’s as a hunting retreat, animals from Africa were imported for the sport.  Today antelope, water buffalo, zebra, ostrich and wild boar roam the island.  Spend the afternoon at the resort.
  • Day 6a - Spend another day near Cayo Saetia, or simply return to Holguin for flights home.  Or…..
  • Day 6b - Continuing to Baracoa.  It’s a five to six hour drive to the oldest town in Cuba, Baracoa.  On the way, stop at Bahia de Taco for a nature walk and introduction to Alexander Humboldt National Park.  Arrive in Baracoa late in the day and check into your Casa Particular or hotel.
  • Day 7 - Do a morning walking tour of Baracoa with a local historian guide.  There’s fascinating history here from early humans, to the indigenous peoples, the arrival of the Spanish and colonialism.  In the afternoon drive a little further east to the Yumuri River canyon for a short, scenic boat ride up a dramatic gorge.  Return to Baracoa for dinner and overnight.
  • Day 8 - Could be another day in the area on one of the many hiking trails of the National Park with a local guide.  Or, continue south and west via Guantanamo, to Cuba’s second-largest city, and heart of the musical tradition of Son, to Santiago de Cuba.  It’s a full day of driving with some stops along the way based on your interests.  Overnight in Santiago.
  • Day 9 - Santiago deserves at least a full day to explore.  This is where Castro’s Revolution started in 1953 with the raid on the Moncada Barracks.  Visit the cemetary where Cuba’s National Hero, Jose Marti is buried, and Fidel Castro was interned in late 2016.  Another historically significant spot is San Juan Hill where Teddy Roosevelt led the Rough Riders to battle during the last part of the Spanish-American War in 1898.  Musical performances abound in Santiago, as well as pleasant walking on a pedestrian-only boulevard and more.
  • Day 10 - Spend another day in Santiago or fly back to the USA from Santiago, or transfer to Holguin (three hours) where there are more frequent flights to the USA, or fly to Havana.

HOLGUIN AND SOUTHEAST CUBA:

For those seeking a blend of spectacular mountain scenery, the coast and an immersion into the history of the Revolution, this is an excellent route for a private custom tour in Cuba.

  • Day 1 - Arrive Holguin.  City tour in the afternoon and overnight at a hotel or Casa Particular.
  • Day 2 - Drive south via Biran, family home of the Castro’s.  Stop for a one-hour visit and then continue to Santiago de Cuba.  Visit the Moncada Barracks to learn about the start of the Revolution in 1953.
  • Day 3 - Full day touring in Santiago.
  • Day 4 - Head west along the dramatic coastal road, and stop in our favorite village for some great interaction with the locals and your choice of a night in a Casa or hotel.
  • Day 5 - Continue along the coastal route all the way to Manzanillo.  Explore the town and overnight.
  • Day 6 - Visit the mountain refuge of Santo Domingo La Plata.  This is the starting point for anyone wanting to climb Pico Turquino.  Explore the area’s farms and meet with local farmers for insight into this rural mountain life.  Drive out of the mountains to Bayamo to spend the night.

TRINIDAD & CIENFUEGOS

Custom Cuba Itinerary Ideas that include Cienfuegos and Trinidad

Santa Clara, Cienfuegos and Trinidad:

With new direct flights going directly to the airport at Santa Clara, US travelers now have the option of skipping out on Havana and getting directly to some of the smaller cities of Cuba.

  • Day 1 - Fly your home to Santa Clara.  On arrival visit the Che Guevara Mausoleum (Mausoleo Che Guevara) which is a memorial to his life and activities.  Then drive to the seaside city, Pearl of the South, Cienfuegos.  Your arrival time will determine the day’s activities.  Options include walking the malecon, a walking tour of the city’s historic sites, etc.  In the evening enjoy a musical performance at the Teatro Terry.  Overnight in your choice of a hotel or Casa Particular.
  • Day 2 - Continue exploring and learning about Cienfuegos.  After lunch we drive to the Botanical Gardens of Cienfuegos for a one hour guided tour of this esteemed collection of plants.  Then it’s on to the Lagoon Guanaroca for a relaxing boat ride in small wooden oar boats, with a goal on seeing the resident flocks of pink flamingos.  We then continue to Cuba’s second oldest city, Trinidad.  Dinner and overnight.
  • Day 3 - A full day to explore Trinidad.  Options include staying in the town and focusing on museusm, architecture, gardens and perhaps a dance lesson.  Or we can head out of town to the country and hike along small creeks and waterfalls and learn about the history of sugar cane plantations in the area.  Be evening it‘s time for dinner and a visit to the outdoor concerts at the Casa de la Musica.
  • Day 4 - We drive back to the west, along the coast, passing by Cienfuegos again, and on to the Bay of Pigs.  We visit Playa Giron museum which tells the fascinating story of the 1961 invasion.  Then after lunch we find a spectacular snorkeling spot where we learn about the Caribbean reef ecosystem.  We continue to the small town of Playa Larga for dinner and overnight.
  • Day 5 - A visit to a nearby community art, music and dance school starts our day.  Or perhaps you’d prefer to go birdwatching in Zapata National Park.  Let us know your interests!   A full day of exploration that ends in Santa Clara again, staging you for a flight home.
