Rock stars' jobs before they were famous, including joshua homme:, bon scott – postman.

The AC/DC legend was a postman in Fremantle, Western Australia in his late teens. Tenuously linked, postmen now deliver mail to Bon Scott Crescent in Moncrieff, which was named in the late singer's honour earlier this year. Other notable people who were postmen include Abraham Lincoln, Walt Disney and Steve Carell. (© Getty/iStock)

Mick Jagger - Porter in psychiatric hospital

While he was a student at the London School of Economics in his teens, Sir Mick worked part time as a porter at the Bexley Mental Hospital. Brought up in the nearby Wilmington, Mick (who is worth an estimated £260million) was paid a reported four pounds and ten shillings a week.

Malcolm Young – Sewing machine mechanic in bra factory

After leaving school aged 15, late AC/DC founder Malcolm Young worked as a sewing machine mechanic at a Hestia bra factory in Sydney, Australia. Malcolm was in a band called the Velvet Underground at the time (not to be confused with the Lou Reed band) but went on to form AC/DC with his younger brother Angus in 1973. Incidentally, Malcolm and Angus came up with the AC/DC band name when they saw the letters – literally meaning alternating current/direct current - on their sister Margaret's sewing machine.

Josh Homme - Farm worker

While still a member of pioneering and highly influential desert rockers Kyuss, Josh Homme still worked on his grandad's farm and only quit when he launched Queens of the Stone Age in 1996 aged 25. "I didn't want to lose my grip on reality," Homme told Red Bull. "I knew the world of rock music is one that it's all too easy to get lost in, and one where you can turn into an arrogant, decadent a--hole if you're not careful." Asked if he'd recommend working the fields to fellow rock stars, Homme replied: "Hard work and a bit of humility never hurt anyone. In that sense, I think it would definitely do a lot of musicians some good!"

Ozzy Osbourne - Slaughterhouse worker

Before Black Sabbath, Ozzy was a jack-of-all-trades working as a construction site labourer, trainee plumber, apprentice toolmaker and car factory horn-tuner. However, it was his job in an abattoir that left a lasting impression on Ozzy. "I had to slice open the cow carcasses and get all the gunk out of their stomachs," he said. "I used to vomit every day; the smell was something else."

Steve Harris – Architectural draughtsman

After studying architectural drawing at Leyton Sixth Form College, the 19-year-old Steve Harris founded Iron Maiden in 1975 but earnt a wage working as an architectural draughtsman in the East End of London. Steve told Nights with Alice Cooper in 2020: "Straight after school, went straight into that job. I did my college stuff and on the weekends, two nights a week, and I made sure I got qualified to a certain degree because I thought, if the band don't work, then I'll have something to fall back on." Steve briefly became a street sweeper after losing his job, but fortunately Iron Maiden's career took off at the turn of the 1980s.

Gene Simmons – Assistant to Vogue magazine editor

The young Chaim Witz (who later renamed himself Gene Klein) was a self-certified "excellent typist" and in the mid-sixties landed himself a job as an assistant to an editor at fashion bible Vogue Magazine. Fortunately he downed the typewriter and a few years later started KISS with Paul Stanley. The rest, they say, is history.

Kurt Cobain – Janitor

During Nirvana's embryonic stages, the teenage Kurt worked as a janitor to help fund the band. Bassist Krist Novoselic said: "Here was a man who would never clean his kitchen or take out the garbage, or do those kind of chores, but Kurt Cobain was not a lazy person. Basically he cleaned toilets – that's how he paid for (our first) demo."

Chris Cornell – Fish handler

Long before his Soundgarden days, the late-great Chris Cornell earned a crust working for his seafood wholesaler. A far cry from his eventual lifestyle as a rock star, Chris told Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 2010: "My job was to wipe up the slime and throw away the fish guts. I met pretty much every sous-chef in town because they would come in and look around at what we had. I think we had the best wholesale seafood in town. The owner was impeccable about it."

Eddie Vedder – Security guard

In the early nineties, Eddie worked a variety of jobs including as a contracted security guard at La Valencia Hotel in San Diego. After the demise of his first band Bad Radio in 1990, Eddie worked as a night attendant at a petrol station. Fortunately his fortunes changed when friend and ex-Red Hot Chilli Peppers member Jack Irons handed him a demo from a band looking for a new frontman…

David Bowie – Butcher’s delivery boy

After discovering the life-changing music of Little Richard, the 10-year-old David Jones quickly decided he wanted to be a saxophone player for his musical idol. Determined, David got a job as a butcher's delivery boy to fund the purchase of his first instrument and took his first tentative step on his glittering music career.

Freddie Mercury – Market stall trader

Freddie and Roger Taylor both had separate stalls on the top floor of the now demolished Kensington Market in London in the early seventies. Alongside clothing items, Freddie sold many of his own paintings and drawings on the stall and even continued to work there when Queen released their self-titled debut album in 1973.

Patti Smith – Toy factory worker

Although it sounds like a harmless enough job on paper, Patti's job in a toy factory testing toys and packing boxes was a traumatic experience for her. Speaking about her colleagues, Patti said: "The stuff those women did to me in that factory was horrible. They'd gang up on me and stick my head in a toilet full of p***."

Joe Strummer – Gravedigger

In his early 20s Joe decamped from London to Newport, South Wales, where, alongside being the part-time frontman of band The Vultures, he worked as a gravedigger at St Woolos Cemetery. When the band split in 1974, Joe packed in his job and moved back to London and formed new rockabilly outfit The 101ers.

Keith Richards – Tennis ball boy

The legendary Rolling Stones axeman worked as a ball boy at a tennis club as a young lad – predominately for his mum and dad Doris and Herbert! He says: "My parents played tennis and I was dragged every weekend to the court as their ball boy, so I got to know the ins and outs of the game!"

Jonathan Davis – Embalmer

After studying at the San Francisco School of Mortuary Science, Jonathan became a professional embalmer. Speaking to The Guardian in 2015, Jonathan said mortuary college was an intriguing experience: "I've pulled so many dead bodies out of cars. It's like a puzzle. Trying to figure out how someone died. It gave me attention too. It was f***ing weird. I got into it for attention and ended up liking it."

Lemmy – Jimi Hendrix’s roadie

A far cry from some of the humdrum jobs on this list, the late Motörhead legend became a roadie for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in his early twenties when he was sharing a flat with Noel Redding and the band's manager Neville Chesters. He was paid £10 a week to go on tour with Jimi plus the extra incentive of "handfuls of acid."

Lars Ulrich – Tennis player

The Metallica drummer has tennis in his blood; both his dad Torben Ulrich and granddad Einer Ulrich were professional tennis players for Denmark. Instilled with a love of the game and ranked in Denmark's top 10 for his age, at 16 Lars attended the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida but realised it wasn't for him: "At the academy, I realized that my ability wasn't enough to be a successful professional, far from it, and the discipline necessary was not in me."

Tony Iommi – Sheet metal worker

The heavy metal pioneer aptly worked with heavy metal pre-fame. The much-fabled story goes that aged 17, Tony lost the tips of his middle and ring finger on his right hand in an accident at the metal factory, however, inspired by jazz musician Django Reinhardt (whose fourth and fifth fingers were paralysed from burns) it did little to thwart his enthusiasm for guitar playing. With the aid of thimbles, over the ensuing years Tony honed his inimitable and influential metal sound.

Tom Araya – Respiratory therapist

The bassist/vocalist used his job as a certified respiratory therapist (dealing with air mixture ratios, drawing blood, asthma and more) at the Brotman Medical Centre in California to partially fund Slayer's debut album 'Show No Mercy'. Pleased he escaped the humdrum life, Tom told KNAC: "I'd get up in the morning and deal with traffic; and then leave at three and deal with traffic." He was at the hospital when Michael Jackson was treated for burns in 1984.

Eric Clapton – Bricklayer’s assistant

Kicked out of art school in 1961, Clapton was told he had to work for his granddad Jack Clapp if he was to carry on living under the same roof as him and wife Rose. Making £15 a week, Eric said working with a master bricklayer "was no laughing matter" due to the hard work but "I really did love it. (My grandfather's) legacy to me was that I should always do my best, and always finish what I started."

Jon Bon Jovi – Janitor

Aged 17 in 1979, the young John Francis Bongiovi Jr. landed a job as a janitor at his cousin Tony Bongiovi's Manhattan recording studio, Power Station. It was while sweeping the floors here that John made his first professional music recording by singing lead vocals on the festive Star Wars song 'R2D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas' from Meco's 1980 holiday album 'Christmas in the Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album'. Balancing his day job with his fledgling rock career, John laid down a number of songs at the studios. In 2001 the unearthed tracks were released as the album 'The Power Station Years: The Unreleased Recordings'.

Maynard James Keenan – Army soldier

The Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifier singer and esteemed winemaker joined the United States Army in 1982 after being partially inspired by the Bill Murray movie Stripes. Distinguished in basic and advanced training, Keenan spent two years in the army but turned down a four-year appointment to West Point (United States Military Academy) and opted to pursue a career in music insteam. The rest, they say, is history.

Tool's Adam Jones - Visual effects on movies

Prior to achieving global fame as the guitarist with Tool, 57-year-old Adam Jones worked in make-up, special effects and set design on a number of blockbuster Hollywood movies. Famous films Jones worked on included Batman Returns, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Dances with Wolves, Ghostbusters II and Jurassic Park. Jones also created the fearsome 'Freddy Krueger in the womb' make-up for 1989 horror movie A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, and he worked on its predecessor A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. Due to his work in the special effects industry, Adam Jones has used his stop motion camera techniques on a number of Tool videos including 'Sober', 'Prison Sex', 'Stinkfist',' Ænema', 'Schism', 'Parabola', and 'Vicarious'. His warped visual creations are a mainstay of Tool's live concerts with the videos often played alongside the live music.

The End Is Nero tour is an invitation from Joshua Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen, Michael Shuman, Dean Fertita and Jon Theodore to come celebrate the end of the world, which we hear is “in a month or two.” They would like to encourage the obscene and the clean, the outcasts and the weirdos, and anyone and everyone in between to attend, this is where you belong. Leave your judgement at the door, bring anything and everything else.

Queens Of The Stone Age have released the official music video for their new song, “Carnavoyer”. Featuring a cameo from Joshua Homme, the video is by Liam Lynch. Matador and Death played by Liam Lynch. Watch below.

In Times New Roman … will be available digitally and physically on June 16th via Matador Records. To Pre-order or pre-save visit here . I am unbelievably disappointed having spent £120.00 that I only saw some of The Hives. I left the festival in 30 degree heat, unable to get a drink unless I was prepared to queue for up to, or over 2 hours. This was unfeasible given the temperatures and the fact that I would miss the bands.

I was then told I was not allowed to re-enter the festival if I left. THIS WAS OUTRAGEOUS! We were not allowed to take refreshments inside the festival. We COULD NOT get a drink inside the festival and then were penalized for getting refreshment outside the site. Why was there no re-entry? This policy should have been immediately changed when you realised you were unable to provide adequate refreshment.

I would expect a refund as this was a terrible experience and one I will never repeat. I missed the bands I wanted to se because of your dreadful lack of planning.

I expect a reply please at your earliest convenience.

It was a pretty poorly organised affair if I am completely honest.

The queues for the bars were totally ridiculous and some of my friends left early as they were just so fed up with waiting for a drink.

That said, the bands were staggeringly good. I've been following QOTSA since 200 and have lost count of the number of times I've seen them but can honestly say that this was amongst the best I have seen them. Josh was on good form and the crowd were loving it. (Iggy had warmed them up nicely).

Before that we saw Brody Dalle, whose new stuff is excellent and benefited from the drummer and guitarist from Savages helping her out.

Deap Vally were excellent, as were Skinny Girls Diet but somehow, Miles Kane didn't fit into the line up.

Nice shows, shame about the organisation!

CONCERT REVIEW: QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE Deliver Thunderous And Cathartic Musical Celebration At The Amp in Bridgeport, CT (August 7th, 2023)

qotsa tour uk 2023

Coming off a string of European and UK festival dates that ran from mid-June through early-July, Queens of the Stone Age ( QOTSA ) are touring North America in support of their new album (and 8th overall), “ In Times New Roman…” their first new material in more than five years! Dubbed The End Is Nero Tour, the Seattle, WA quintet formed in 1996, led by front-man/guitarist and founding member Josh Homme (a.k.a. Baby Duck ), visited the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater (better known as the Amp) in Bridgeport, CT this past Monday evening on the fourth date on their 28-city trek.

At 5:30 PM sharp, gates to the former home of the Bridgeport Bluefish minor league baseball franchise – The Ballpark at Harbor Yard – opened to a line of diehard QOTSA fans that had been waiting for hours already. Nestled along the Long Island Sound waterfront, the boutique amphitheater that seats nearly 6,000 souls opened on July 28, 2021, with inaugural performances by REO Speedwagon and Styx .

The first of two bands performing this night in support of QOTSA were The Armed , a musical collective of at least seven members, with noise rock and post punk leanings. Created in Detroit, Michigan in 2009, the project has featured several guest collaborators on their releases, including QOTSA ’s very own Troy Van Leeuwen who produced The Armed ’s newest album ( “Perfect Saviors” ), and fifth overall, which is set for release on August 25. As membership in The Armed is anonymous, I did my very best to dig up these band-mate names – Cara Drolshagen , Patrick Shiroishi , Randall Lee and Urian Hackney . However, The Armed have gone to great lengths to deceive and misdirect their fans when it comes to who actually is in the band, even hiring actors to pretend to be members, using fake names and several other ruses. So, you can basically take these four names with a grain of salt.

Taking to the stage at approximately 7:00 pm, the outfit’s tornado of bodies twisted and swirled in all directions for the entire duration of their dizzying set, spilling into the audience on more than one occasion. The Armed offered up nine songs best described as experimental pop, including a few which were pulled from their fourth, highly acclaimed full-length album ( “Ultrapop “) released in 2021, including “All Futures,” “An Iteration” and “Big Shell.” As The Armed ’s 35-minute set turned for home, an awkward exchange occurred between one of the outfit’s male vocalists and someone in the audience. Nonetheless, the incident was short-lived and despite the slightly bad vibes, the apocalyptic delivery of fast, hard songs with tonsil-shredding vocals was still a welcome sight to behold.

Next to grace the stage was Phantogram , the electronic, dream pop musical duo of multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter . Formed in 2007 and hailing from Saratoga Springs, NY, the two friends who met in preschool were joined by a touring drummer and keyboardist as they mesmerized the steadily growing audience with their swirling guitars, spacey keyboards and airy vocals.

Like The Armed before them, Phantogram also tendered a nine song set which they spread across their four album discography. The heaviest dose of their set-list was gifted from 2014’s “Voices “, including “Black Out Days,” “Bad Dreams,” “Fall in Love,” and one of their biggest hits, “Howling at the Moon.”

The soft spoken Barthel – rocking a Pixies tee, black patent leather boots, shiny silver shorts and fishnets – and her hypnotic, engaging lyrics were on point all evening. As is accustomed when the duo performs live, her vocals were perfectly complimented by Carter ’s atmospheric guitar work (sporting his signature baseball hat) and the rest of the band’s trip-hop instrumentation for a captivating, dreamy set.

Shortly after 9:00 pm, as Peggy Lee’s “Smile” faded out from the house PA, Baby Duck (the only constant member throughout multiple lineup changes), the aforementioned Van Leeuwen (a multi-instrumentalist, including guitar and keyboard), Michael Shuman (bass), Jon Theodore (drums) and Dean Fertita (keyboards, guitar) entered at stage left to a deafening ovation. After assuming their rightful positions and taking up their respective instruments, the show was officially underway with “No One Knows,” from their third studio album and arguably one of their most beloved tracks. Up next was “The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret” , another one of QOTSA ’s finest songs (about f*cking, of course).

Spreading the wealth around their career-spanning discography (with the only absence being from their 1998 self-titled debut album), Homme and his supremely cool mates bestowed upon their fans 17 songs which more than adequately displayed their prowess as alternative rock gods. At the pinnacle of their careers, each member commanded total mastery of his craft, all set to a blues-infused backdrop established by Homme ’s distinctive guitar playing style and falsetto vocals.

The first of four offerings from 2023’s “In Times New Roman…” , “Emotion Sickness,” was soon to follow. QOTSA also presented “Carnavoyeur,” “Negative Space” and “Paper Machete” a bit later. Noteworthy, the final entry to their latest studio offering, “Straight Jacket Fitting,” was on the printed set-list between fan favorites “Make It Wit Chu” and “Little Sister,” taken from “Era Vulgaris” (2007) and “Lullabies to Paralyze” (2005), respectively, but did not make the cut. No worries though, as “God Is in the Radio” took its place as the penultimate song to the encore.

As the end of the epic night of stoner rock approached, Homme dedicated “In the Fade” to the late Mark Lanegan – prominent singer for the early grunge band Screaming Trees (1984-2000) and former QOTSA member (2000-2014) – who co-wrote the song with him.

Circling back to the encore, there really wasn’t one, as it was more of an acknowledgment by Homme as to where it should be had QOTSA physically walked off, and back onto the stage. So, for the sake of saving precious time in their 105-minute set, and in lieu of a traditional encore, Homme simply turned his back to the sold-out venue and then spun back around toward us, exclaiming “here we are again!” physically walked off, and back onto the stage. So, for the sake of saving precious time in their 105-minute set, and in lieu of a traditional encore, Homme simply turned his back to the sold-out venue and then spun back around toward us, exclaiming “here we are again!”

With the band’s outlaw swagger meter still registering 100 percent, the final coupling of songs (“Go with the Flow” and “A Song for the Dead” ) was upon us. But before the final number commenced, Homme addressed his loyal, rapturous fans one last time. “It was a pleasure to get to know you, thank you so much. I hope you had a wonderful night. C’est la vie motherf*ckers.”

The first leg of ‘The End Is Nero Tour ’ runs through August 19, with a stop at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville, TN. After a festival date in Sao Paulo, Brazil (September 9), the second leg of U.S. dates resumes on September 16 at Riot Fest in Chicago, IL, ultimately wrapping at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, CA on October 8. Less than a week after their North American tour culminates, QOTSA are off to Guadalajara, Mexico (October 14), followed by gigs in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, the UK, and finally, Dublin, Ireland on November 22.

Hosting an impressive variety of artists set to appeal to any music lover, the three-day instalment will play host to countless acts from every genre from metal to pop, indie to dance. Whether it be through rock icons such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Queens Of The Stone Age , or emerging pop stars reigniting the live music scene, Mad Cool 2023 is set to be one of the most jam-packed festivals of this year.

Now, with less than two months until it kicks off – and remaining tickets available here – what better time to take a glimpse into some of NME ’s top choices for who you should keep an eye out from this year’s line-up.

Appearing as one to watch back in April 2020 , Spanish four-piece Belako were already turning heads even before their debut album ‘Plastic Drama’ , which was released later that year. Having signed an international record deal with BMG, invigorated the Spanish rock scene with their own blend of punk-thrash, and been celebrated on the NME Radar in the short time since, the four-piece are set to ignite the stage when they kick off their set in native Spain this summer.

Up next is another recent breakthrough artist, the Ghanaian-Australian rapper who released his debut LP ‘Smiling With No Teeth’ , last year to an uproar of positive reviews. Receiving a glowing five-star review from NME for his recent performance at the Sydney Opera House, and having channelled an intricate blend of Frank Ocean , Jimi Hendrix and Paramore in his latest song ‘Hole Heart’ (which he included on NME ’s C23 mixtape earlier this year ), Owusu is almost certain to unite fans of rap, rock and punk with his performance later this year.

An NME favourite, HotWax have already made themselves into one of the most sought-after new acts in recent years, and have been hailed as the “next big guitar band” . While proving that they come to life when they hit the stage — having supported The Strokes and earning themselves a slot at this year’s All Points East — the slot the Hasting-via-Brighton trio have secured at Mad Cool promises to be their most impressive yet, and arrives hot on the heels of their debut EP ‘A Thousand Times’ , which isset for release later this week (May 19).

When it comes to artists reinventing their genre, no one does it quite like Lil Nas X , who revolutionised the rap scene with his debut album ‘Montero’ in 2021. From collaborating with the likes of Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion , to setting social media ablaze with his country-rap song with Billy Ray Cyrus , there is no doubt that the 24-year-old singer-songwriter will be delivering a set almost as immersive and creative as his look at the 2023 Met Gala .

In case being at the three-day festival in sunny Madrid wasn’t enough in itself, pop icon Lizzo will be there on the opening day of the event (July 6), and no doubt arriving with her message of positivity, countless global hits including ‘About Damn Time’ and ‘Good As Hell’, and, of course, Sasha Flute.

Given the array of guest appearances at her ongoing American tour — and not to forget her cover of Rammstein at a show in Germany earlier this year — it is safe to assume the pop icon will make her headline set at Mad Cool something fans won’t forget any time soon.

Nova Twins will undoubtedly be one of the top acts to catch at this year’s instalment of the festival, and have already been praised by Sir Elton John as one of the female-fronted acts making “the best” in the modern day. For those who missed the London rock duo on their recent EU and UK ‘Supernova’ tour , what better time to catch them live, and discover why they were named as one of the best Albums Of The Year at last year’s Mercury Prize , following the release of their latest LP .

Rock and metal fans can rejoice this year, as the headline slot from Queens Of The Stone Age arrives less than a month after their newly-announced album, ‘In Times New Roman’ (set for June 8). Without question, Josh Homme and co will be using the set to perform some of the first live renditions of songs on the album — meaning that fans at this year’s Mad Cool will be some of the first in the world to hear the band’s first new music in six years .

  • Rina Sawayama

Hot on the tail of her North American tour dates , alternative singer-songwriter and The Big Read cover star Rina Sawayama is set to have one of the most memorable performances of the entire festival this year.

Having already earned the trophy for Best Live Act at the BandLab NME Awards in 2022 , the alternative singer and John Wick 4 actress is expected to bring the energy this July at the opening night of the festival, and play some of the fan-favourite songs from her second LP ‘Hold The Girl’ , which was awarded five-stars in an NME review.

Just three months after Sam Smith ‘s captivating performance in London , the singer is set to bring their empowering, burlesque-inspired live shows to the Mad Cool stage, acting as one of the headliners on the second day of the three-day stint. Having reinvented themself from the 2014 breakthrough single ‘Stay With Me’, nearly 10 years on, Smith will undoubtedly deliver one of the most captivating, immersive and feel-good slots of the entire festival.

Bringing the list to a close and representing the urban and electronic side of the 2023 instalment of Mad Cool is Spain’s own artist and producer Sila Lua. Breaking into the scene in 2017 with her debut single ‘The Black Door’, Lua soon went on to solidify her alternative-urban sound with her 2022 LP ‘Rompe’. Somewhat of an underdog of this year’s line-up, her hypnotic renditions of ‘Eres Para Mí’ and ‘Tanta Vida’ are not ones to be missed.
