Taylor Swift is taking fans on a trip through each of her albums on The Eras Tour, which launched with back-to-back shows on March 17 and 18 in Glendale, Ariz., and her costumes are part of the journey.

As the superstar took the stage at State Farm Arena on the first night, her attention to detail was ever present, as each of her outfits harkened back to a previous tour or live appearance from her 17-year career in the spotlight.

Kicking off with 2019’s Lover , Swift opened the show using a light pink acoustic guitar reminiscent of the instrument she strummed while performing at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, where she delivered a medley of the title track and “You Need to Calm Down.” To run through early hits such as “Love Story” and “You Belong with Me” from 2008’s Fearless , she brought back her classic style from her sophomore era, donning a gold fringed dress and trading her pink guitar for a sparkly silver edition — the only thing missing was a nod to her famous mane of teenage curls.

When it came time to revisit Reputation , Tay resurrected the popular snake motif from the era (long live Karyn!), channeling her aesthetic from “Look What You Made Me Do” in a dark, asymmetrical body suit covered in glittering red serpents. And while only one song from 2010’s Speak Now was featured on the opening night’s setlist (an extended edition of deep cut “Enchanted”), the singer changed into a fairytale-like ball gown fit for a princess.

During the part of the setlist dedicated to 2012’s Red , Swift showed off a new version of the T-shirt she wore in the music video for “22” — this time emblazoned with her famously cryptic phrase “Not a lot going on at the moment.” And perhaps the most major set change during the show occurred as she welcomed the audience into the Folklorian woods of her surprise 2020 album by recreating a version of the moss-covered cabin she called home to perform a medley of “Cardigan,” “August” and Evermore lead single “Willow” at the 2021 Grammys with collaborators Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner.

The final fashion reference on the tour came when Swift went back to 1989 by changing into a crop top and short skirt, just like the many she wore back in the day with her squad.

She Wore Sneakers (and a Wig!): See the Outfits Taylor Swift Rocked in 'You Belong with Me' Video

Nine years after the release of the "You Belong with Me" music video, Swift recreated her iconic Junior Jewels shirt in her "Look What You Made Me Do" video. The updated shirt included names of her best friends, including "Blake & Ryan," "Selena," "Gigi," "Lena" and more.

Fans got to see Swift try on a goth look in the video. Earlier this year, the superstar admitted to once using Sharpie marker ... maybe this served as inspiration?

Swift throws it back to the '60s with her hippie-inspired get-up.

She's worn her hair long and curly, short and straight, with bangs and without — but these fun pigtails haven't made an appearance in public again.

We're guessing those sneakers Swift sings about in the song are just out of frame.

Forlorn on a park bench as she watches her one true love ride off with a gal who's all wrong for him ... is there anything teens related to more 10 years ago?

Also playing the mean girl, Swift donned a brunette wig for the role. She's also sported wigs in several other music videos , including for "Babe," "Bad Blood," "Wildest Dreams" and more.

"I remember I was overhearing a conversation one of my friends was having with his girlfriend, and he was obviously getting completely chewed out by her! She was just screaming through the phone at him, and I think it was for something really small, like he told her he'd call her in 10 minutes and instead it was 15 minutes later ... something like that," Swift once told the Boot about the inspiration behind her hit track.

"I remember thinking to myself, 'Why does he let her push him around like that because she obviously doesn't appreciate him?' But instead of saying that out loud to him, I wrote it down in a song."

"She wears short skirts / I wear T-shirts / She's cheer captain / And I'm on the bleachers..."

Self-explanatory.

Every great rom-com has an epic makeover, so of course Swift featured one in her music video. As she sings in another fan-favorite track? It's a love story, and baby he (in this case, actor Lucas Till) said "Yes!"

For her second red carpet appearance at the 2007 awards – and where she would win her first award, the Breakthrough Video of the Year for TIm McGraw – she rocked what would become a Taylor Swift staple for the first few years of her career: a feminine and sparkly gown featuring a strapless neckline and neutral colors and a tulle skirt, by BCBG Max.

She later changed for an appearance on stage to hand out an award, wearing a shimmery sea-green gown with an epic train.

2008: 'picture to burn' .

A year after her first ever CMT win, Taylor returned to the awards show with a jazzy-version of her hit song 'Picture to Burn'  which turned into a head-banging moment for the then 19-year-old. 

Rocking a black mini swing dress with a cut-out across the neckline, she paired the look with black biker boots and a trilby hat which she threw off to let her long blonde hair loose as the song kicked in. 

For the red carpet she wore a Balenciaga layer dress in magenta, paired with matching heels and a double headband – a nod to the fashion of the time. 

2009: You Belong with Me' and 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' with Def Leppard 

2009 was a big year for Taylor, picking up two awards for 'Love Story', taking to the stage twice, and being a part of one of the most iconic T Swift moments ever – becoming TSwizzle. 

The singer teamed up with rapper T-Pain for a parody of 'Love Story' that saw her rapping alongside T-Pain, mocking her image as a boring singer who had never been to the club and still lived at home with her parents. For the video she rocked a pair of baggy cargo pants and a white tee with an oversized baseball cap and large gold necklaces.

Later in the show she performed 'You Belong with Me,' kicking it off with her sat on a bed, replicating the music video, in a white dressing gown before she undressed to reveal a classic Taylor look – a blue strappy mini dress with sparkly embellishments. 

The then-20-year-old also appeared on stage to collaborate with Def Leppard as they performed their 1980s hit song 'Pour Some Sugar On Me,' wearing a similar look as the previous dress but in black. 

On the red carpet, Taylor kept it sparkly in a Collette Dinnigan Resort gown from 2009, which featured layers of embellishments. 

2010: 

Taylor wore a John Galliano ‘Buckle Strap Dress’ in a deep purple for the 2010 ceremony. This was the first year she wore her blonde hair straight, a look that would later become the norm for the singer.

2011: .

For the 2011 ceremony Taylor won Video of the Year for 'Mine' but was on tour so unable to attend.

Later that year however she did attend the Artist of the Years awards, and hinted at what would become the following year's hit album in a bright red mini dress featuring a corset style top and A-line skirt. The girly look was complemented by her decision to sweep her curls into a classic updo and she included a swipe of red lipstick. 

2013: 'Red' 

It would be another four years before Taylor returned to the CMT stage – for what would also be her final performance for the organization – for a riotous performance of 'Red' the title track of her 2012 album. 

The singer wore a stunning sequin-encrusted black romper with a bold red cape dress over the top, reminiscent of what would go on to become her established costume for the Red tour that kicked off that same year, the circus ring leader.

Here’s Everything Taylor Swift Wore and Sang During the Eras Tour Opening Night

Scoring a ticket to the Eras Tour may have felt like the eighth circle of hell , but it sounds like Taylor Swift's opening night was pure heaven on earth. 

On March 18, Swift kicked off the tour in Glendale, Arizona (a.k.a. Swift City ), performing for a crowd of 80,000 for the first time since her last tour in 2008. Celebrating all 10 of her albums—including the latest LP, Midnights —Swift's set included 44 songs, 16 backup dancers, and at least 13 outfit changes. According to People , the entire show lasted three hours and 13 minutes, which, of course, is the artist's favorite number. 

The trick to the quick change is keeping everything else simple, as Keira Knightley would agree . Throughout the entire night, Swift wore her hair straight, her eyeliner winged, and her lips her signature shade of red. According to Elle , Swift began with Lover , taking audiences through “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince,” “Cruel Summer,” “The Man,” “You Need to Calm Down,” “Lover,” and “The Archer.” To represent the album, People reports, Swift wore a sparkling Versace bodysuit before switching into a boardroom-approved sparkling suit jacket perfect for “The Man.” Personally, I'm drawn to her sparkling Christian Louboutin boots, which appeared multiple times throughout the night. 

For Fearless , Swift rocked a golden Alberta Ferretti fringe dress to perform “Fearless,” “You Belong With Me,” and “Love Story.” Baby, just say yes. 

Swift then opted for a sweet embroidered orange corset dress to perform multiple songs off Evermore for the first time live, including “’Tis The Damn Season,” “Willow,” “Marjorie,” “Champagne Problems,” and “Tolerate It.”

Perhaps the most interesting look Swift rocked, however, was the asymmetrical, half-leg bodysuit she changed into for her Reputation era. The pop star reportedly belted out “Look What You Made Me Do” in a black sequined ensemble covered in vibrant red snakes, which seem to reference her infamous feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West .

In stark contrast, Swift referenced her sequined Valentino look from the Speak Now tour with a romantic gown by Nicole + Felicia, per People . “Enchanted,” indeed. 

Based on the photos, my favorite portion of the night came when Swift embraced her Red era. To start, she performed “22” in a new version of her sequined T-shirt from the 2013 music video , switching the text from “Not a lot going on at the moment” to “A lot going on at the moment.”

After passing her hat off to a fan , Swift removed the shirt to reveal a black and red sequined Ashish romper for “We Are Never Getting Back Together” and “I Knew You Were Trouble” before adding a matching long coat for the full 10-minute version of “All Too Well.”

Next came Folklore. Swift reportedly performed all seven of her chosen songs—“Invisible String,” “Betty,” “The Last Great American Dynasty,” “August,” “Illicit Affairs,” “My Tears Ricochet,” and “Cardigan”—in a dreamy lavender dress by Alberta Ferretti.

“A sort of a running theme in my music is that I love to explain to men how to apologize,” Swift told the crowd of “Betty.” “I just love it. It's kind of my thing. I love to tell them, step-by-step, here's how simple this is to fix things. If you just follow these easy steps that I'm laying out for you in a three-minute song…. Just love the idea of men apologizing.” 

For 1989, Swift kept things light and fun, performing “Style, “Blank Space,” “Shake It Off,” “Wildest Dreams,” and “Bad Blood” in a pink crystal skirt and top set by Roberto Cavalli. 

Swift followed up 1989 with an acoustic performance of “Mirrorball.” However, she told the audience she plans on switching things up for each show.

Swift was dressed in a tiered magenta gown, which she kept on to sing “Tim McGraw” from her debut album, Taylor Swift .

Swift closed out her show with one of her most dramatic transitions, diving under the stage in her purple dress and emerging in a short sequined number and climbing up a ladder into the clouds, where she added a purple coat. Could there be a more perfect intro to Midnights ?

From Midnights , Swift performed “Lavender Haze, “Anti-Hero,” “Midnight Rain,” “Vigilante Shit,” “Bejeweled,” “Mastermind,” and “Karma.” But she wasn't all out of tricks yet. 

In the middle of “Midnight Rain,” Swift whipped out yet another quick change, falling gracefully behind a wall of umbrellas before stepping out of the fray in a sparkling blue Oscar de la Renta bodysuit and matching Christian Louboutin boots. 

Can we have a bit of commotion for this rainbow fringe jacket?

Yeah, this was well worth the wait.

What to Wear to Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie, According to Swifties

The friendship bracelets were just the beginning. For months, Taylor Swift fans have been churning out bejeweled ensembles left and right on the Eras Tour . Now, the singer's concert film "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," which premiered on Oct. 13, is giving fans the opportunity to turn a trip to the movies into a red carpet event.

The Eras Tour concert movie is the perfect excuse for Swifties to pay homage to their favorite Swift albums , songs, and eras of the singer-songwriter's fashion evolution . For "Folklore" fans, crimson and amber cardigans paired with black miniskirts and tights only feel fitting, especially given the fall aesthetic that celebrities, including Swift , have been wearing all season long; for "Midnights" fans, there's no such thing as too much sparkle; and for devoted "Reputation"-lovers, black leather with silver accents is the way to go.

While the movie has inspired some fans to piece together elaborate outfits inspired by Swift's tour outfits, others are taking a more comfortable approach. Taking a page from Swift in her "You Belong With Me" video, several fans are showing up in gingham pajama pants and homemade white T-shirts that read "Junior Jewels" in marker. Of course, each shirt is unique, and like the beaded friendship bracelets that have become a staple at Swift's concerts, they give Swifties another opportunity to show off their creative side.

For the film's world premiere, fans wasted no time showing their sartorial love for the singer. "I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS REAL LIFEEEEE," one person captioned a video of what they planned to wear on the "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" red carpet in Los Angeles on Oct. 11. On social media, fans who weren't able to attend the exclusive event also posted pictures of the outfits they would have worn to the premiere. For her part, Swift arrived in a cutout floral gown by Oscar de la Renta.
