These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

solo travel groups over 60

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. Safety Considerations for Solo Senior Travelers

Safety is paramount for solo senior travelers. Whether you’re embarking on a solo adventure or joining a tour, taking certain precautions can ensure a safe and enjoyable travel experience. Here are some important safety considerations and tips for safe solo travel for seniors :

1. Travel Insurance

It is highly recommended for solo senior travelers to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost or stolen belongings. Having travel insurance provides peace of mind and financial protection in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

2. Stay Connected

While traveling alone, it is crucial to stay connected with your loved ones. Keep them informed about your itinerary, including dates, destinations, and accommodations. Regularly check-in with family or friends so that they know you’re safe. In case of emergencies, having someone who knows your whereabouts is essential.

3. Research Destinations

Before traveling to a new destination, it’s important to research the area thoroughly. Familiarize yourself with local customs, laws, and potential safety concerns. Reading travel advisories, reviews, and recommendations can provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions.

4. Choose Well-Reviewed Accommodations

When selecting accommodations, opt for well-reviewed hotels, resorts, or vacation rentals. Look for places that prioritize safety and have positive feedback from fellow travelers. Check for security features such as well-lit entrances, secure locks, and 24-hour front desk service.

5. Be Aware of Local Customs and Safety Precautions

Respect and adhere to local customs and traditions wherever you travel. By being aware of local norms, you can avoid potentially unsafe situations and show respect to the local culture. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the safety precautions recommended for the destination, such as avoiding certain areas or taking precautions against pickpocketing.

6. Consider Traveling in Groups or Joining Guided Tours

For added safety and peace of mind, consider traveling in groups or joining guided tours specifically designed for seniors. Traveling with a group provides an additional layer of security, companionship, and the expertise of knowledgeable guides. It also offers the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals and share memorable experiences.

7. Remain Vigilant and Trust Your Instincts

While exploring new destinations, always trust your instincts and remain vigilant. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded or unfamiliar areas. If something feels unsafe or uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation. Your intuition can often guide you towards making the right decisions for your safety.

Remember, solo senior travel can be an incredibly rewarding and empowering experience. By considering these safety tips and taking necessary precautions, you can confidently embark on your solo adventures and create lifelong memories.

Choosing the Right Tour for Solo Seniors

When it comes to selecting a tour for solo seniors, there are several important factors to consider. By taking the time to evaluate your travel preferences and match them with the right tour options, you can ensure a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect tour:

  • Consider your travel preferences: Think about what type of travel experience you prefer. Do you enjoy a more structured itinerary or do you prefer more flexibility and freedom? Consider if you prefer group activities or if you enjoy time alone to explore at your own pace.
  • Assess activity levels: Take into account your physical capabilities and choose a tour that matches your activity level. Some tours may involve extensive walking or hiking, while others may be more relaxed and leisurely.
  • Check accommodations: Look into the quality and accessibility of accommodations provided by the tour. Ensure that they meet your comfort and safety needs.
  • Evaluate group size: Consider if you prefer a smaller or larger group. Smaller groups can often provide a more intimate and personalized experience, while larger groups may offer more opportunities to connect with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Research expert tour guides: Find out about the expertise and knowledge of the tour guides. Experienced guides can enhance your travel experience by providing valuable insights and information about the destinations.

Solo Travel

Solo travel as a mature or senior traveller

Solo travel and singles holidays can be daunting as apart of a life change process. This article shares some the benefits of travel groups for solo travellers. We have been looking after mature and senior travellers since 1983 we offer a range of tour types from Discovery tours to long stay and walking tours.

People choose to embark on solo trip (singles holiday) for many different reasons. Benefits of being a traveling soloinclude an openness to a new travel experience that can never quite be matched by travel with a partner. For a senior traveler, solo travel for solo female travellers or male travelers offers a sense of freedom, and encourages a willingness to meet people and form new friendships. This is where travel groups for solo traveller s or small group tours that incorporate solo travel can be ideal, because you are bound to meet like minded travellers who are often a fellow solo traveller. Odyssey Traveller as a travel company focuses on mature-aged and senior travellers and understand your need for a soloadventure . The company offers a unique collection of senior vacation tours and an in-depth travel programme that lets you explore the destination supported by your tour manager and local guide, the local culture and sights within a small group tour holiday for senior travelers.

At Odyssey Traveller there is a single supplement charged for joining the travel group as a solo traveller . The singles holidays supplement covers the cost of single occupancy of a room with a double bed when travelling solo . We seek to be transparent in our pricing for the lone traveller . Only in exceptional circumstances would a single traveler with Odyssey Traveller have to endure a night or two in a single bed. We have a clear policy on room type allocation for our tours in Britain and Europe for either the male or female solo travellers, the same type of room for all on this group tour is offered, no exceptions.

Small group tours for those travelling alone

Travel groups for solo female travellers can be an intimidating prospect, particularly in a small group tour environment. But on an Odyssey tour, you are not the only solo traveller. Our Australia or New Zealand based tour director (tour leader) is also travelling as an individual. Typically, a third of all our small group tour travelers are solo on our senior vacation tours. Our small group tour s have like minded travellers, travelling by themselves or with their partner. In fact, the more adventurous destinations tend to be dominated by intrepid, solo travellers! These are also suitable vacation and adventures for solo female travel who can decide to share a room or have their own room for complete comfort and privacy. We can assist you in pairing you with another solo female traveller and by sharing the room you won’t have to pay for the single supplement.

Odyssey Traveller ’s small group tours are not solo travel tours for seniors, but are tours designed for those who like to explore and learn as they travel as a solo traveler or travelling with their partner in a group tour setting. Our organisation, our program leaders / tour director, and most importantly our clients, welcome the fellow traveller, both couples and the single traveller from all backgrounds on any trip. Our small group tour options are diverse in location and activity, South America , to Myanmar or the Scottish isles , from a Walking tour to searching for Dinosaurs or cultural experiences such as v isiting places Monet painted . Odyssey has more than 650 travel groups for solo travellers offered each year, , so whatever travel style appeals to you we are sure to have something suitable. Odyssey does not offer regular river cruises, solo travel tours, or singles holidays for mature and senior travellers. However, we do have different styles of river cruise as part of some of our itinerary collection, like a cruise down the Nile River on our Egypt tour and the Volga river on our Journey through Mongolia and Russia on board of a river cruise boat.

Click below to register for our complimentary catalogue and weekly newsletter and stay in touch with Odyssey Traveller and it’s collection of all inclusive small group educational based tours for the senior and mature traveller. In our newsletter we update you on upcoming tours and new articles published as well as travel deals .

Everyone is welcome

Forming and becoming part of a travelling group is enjoyable and a lot of fun, solo travel tours could be difficult if all travellers exhibit shyness, as a company offering small group tours since 1983 we remain wary of solo travel tours as a tour company , group dynamics and general involvement as part of a group is socially healthy for any group not just a senior traveler. Being part of a travelling group finds that the laughter and humour shared is genuine; as is the care and mutual respect shown to a fellow traveler on an Odyssey tour for mature and senior travellers. Friendship and associations formed with a new friend are often long lasting. In some cases a fellow traveller becomes a regular travelling companion for future tours! Group sizes on a guided tour are usually between 6 and 12 people. Our limited numbers mean that people actually get to know each other and feel part of a group – you don’t just feel like a number on a bus even our coach tour driver also tends to become one of the “family” on many of our tours.

Our small group tours are designed especially for mature and senior travellers, in short, the older traveler. We provide quality, flexibility and care that is tailored to our clients. Our local guides and tour guide prefer working with small group tours, the questions and dialogue tends to diverse and of a good level of curiosity from the traveler.

This article details common reasons for solo travel, its benefits, as well as some of its challenges. There’s also a real-life traveller story thrown in, drawn from the Odyssey Traveller archive of more than thirty-five years in mature and senior travel. Feel free to contribute your own in our comments section, below! We hope this post will inspire you to set off on a new adventure, whether you are travelling solo or not.

Why solo travel?

For some people, the freedom of solo travel makes it the best holiday option. You don’t have to compromise on your choices or your time. Not having to hold your partner’s needs in mind can be liberating! And many couples choose to travel solo in order to maintain their independence and keep the spark of their relationship alive.

The reasons for travelling as a single are many & often a private decision, however, you are not alone.

Solo travel might offer a brief escape or change of scenery. Many people today find themselves in relationships of care. Perhaps an illness keeps your partner from travel, or their needs take a substantial toll on your own. Sometimes, a brief escape can provide the refreshment you need so that you can return to your life with a renewed sense of your own self. This can be very beneficial, particularly when relationships of care are long-term. We have no doubt your partner will appreciate your new tan, and your photographs and stories of the world.

Or, different again, a holiday as a single might be your first step in a new life. Your circumstances may have changed, and a recent bereavement, a relationship break-up, or an empty nest might leave you wondering about your next steps. Taking these steps alone can be intimidating. A guided tour in a small group setting of like minded people might provide just enough support for you to spread your wings and rediscover who you are.

Central and West Africa

So, you are thinking about solo travel. What’s next?

The first step is to sit down and really think about the kind of holiday you need. Is it an exotic journey across Japan by rail ? Perhaps you want to indulge your passions – for history , for archaeology , perhaps even Scandinavian architecture and design . The challenges of a walking tour might build up your confidence so that you can return home fitter and ready to take on anything. Or perhaps you just want to discover as much of the world as you can. Once you have determined the type of holiday you are craving, narrow it down to some dream destinations. Time of year is something to bear in mind. This will influence how practical your dream destination might be. Our article on responsible travel might point you toward some places you had never even thought of!

Odyssey Traveller offers small group tours with an educational focus. This attracts people who are interested in authentic experiences, and are naturally open and inquisitive about the world. We typically limit our tours to around 10-15 people. The spread of participants is usually two thirds couples, to one third single people. But given our small number, all participants get to know each other. We find this balance makes for really positive experiences for the mature and senior travellers who choose to travel with us.

Odyssey’s tour itinerary typically depart from a major centre, making it easy to for you join the trip. On the first evening you will meet your travel director and group travel friends before we start our adventure and venture off the beaten track with you new fellow traveler friends, usually our travel is by coach tour exclusive to the group. We work with reputable local tour company(s) in each destination to better support the local economy. We also assist you with independent travel before or after the group travel so you can have a perfect trip and return home with wonderful memories.

Accommodation considerations

Single travellers have the option of their own room – a rare luxury for some! To avoid the single supplement, we may also offer a shared room option, by matching two people of the same gender for a twin share. This can lead to even greater friendships and extra support for one another. Of course, over our twenty years, some funny situations have arisen too! One pairing of single travellers was challenged by a particularly open-minded individual, who enjoyed eating crisps in the middle of the night, in the nude! We are very responsive to the sensitivities of our participants, so more suitable arrangements were made for the remainder of this tour. Remember, solo travel sometimes throws up unexpected surprises! But after all, this is part of its appeal. We can even arrange for a virtual meet-up with your future room mate before you depart.

How to prepare for solo travel

Visit your gp.

While affording certain freedoms, solo travel also comes with greater responsibilities. You must understand your own fitness limitations and manage any conditions you may have. For all travellers, we recommend a thorough check-up with your doctor beforehand. They can help assess your fitness levels, provide advice on your health, and may equip you with emergency medications to carry with you in case. Don’t forget to bring enough of your prescription medication too so you are covered for the duration of your trip.

Packing suitcase

Plan your packing

Well-planned packing is also important – there’s no relying on your partner to remember the toothpaste (though a friendly fellow-tour member may oblige!). Follow this link for more detailed advice on packing for your holiday. Remember that you must bring the right clothes and shoes for the anticipated conditions. Cross-country tours may require both warm and cool weather clothing. And a first-aid kit is a must for any holiday, but rest assured our local tour operator and tour director will also have one available at all times when the group is on the go. We have compiled a special article on walking tours, available here .

Photography tips

Bring a camera!

Importantly, don’t forget your camera or journal! When travelling with a partner, we often relax knowing that the memories will be shared together. But as a single traveller, your unique experiences and memories are your own. Be sure to capture the sights, detail the experiences, and record the contact details of any new friends around the world. This will ensure your adventure and great cultural experiences live on in your mind for years to come. Your recollections might inspire other people in your life to step out of their comfort zone, too!

What to tell your family

In our experience, family members of solo travellers are supportive – and frankly impressed! Explain to them your motivations, and share with them the details of your impending solo holiday. They can track your itinerary and look through photographs on our website . They might also like to read the detailed country profile we mail to participants prior to their departure. Family and friends of solo travellers can rest assured knowing that you will be accompanied by fellow, mature travellers throughout the tour. And that our experienced guides provide the expertise and support to take the stress and worries out of the equation. Odyssey Traveller is easily contactable throughout your tour, should anyone want to check in on your progress. Of course, if you are too busy scaling a glacier , or trekking along an ancient pilgrimage track , we can pass along the message on your behalf!

Single traveller

So, what’s next?

We have summarised the steps for you to take in order to make your dream a reality. Odyssey Traveller is easily contactable, by email or phone . Our friendly and experienced staff can help design the adventure you are seeking.

Think about what you want and what your travel style is.

Research destinations, and don’t forget to take the season, and any visa requirements, into account., talk to your friends and family. they may have advice or experiences to share with you. plus, we know they would love to be involved in the process, chat to our staff, by phone or email. we can help allay any concerns or nerves you might have, visit your gp for a check-up and advice on your physical fitness, book your tour this is the scariest step, and once done, the rest will fall into place, get prepared start walking or join a gym if your tour requires a moderate fitness level., research the countries you will be visiting. read the books we recommend on our tour readings lists., purchase the clothing and equipment you will need, and – for shoes in particular – wear them in, make arrangements for the care of your family or pets in your absence. short-term respite might be an option, or family members and friends could help out while you are away., pack you are getting close by now. writing a list can be helpful here., make your way to the airport, and hop on the plane. once you reach your hotel, you will meet the other members of your tour, along with your experienced guide. activities usually commence the very next day..

Before you know it, you will be returning home with a new set of memories and, with a bit of luck, new lifelong friends. We can even boast a marriage out of an Odyssey Traveller small group tour! So, what are you waiting for? Take the plunge and book a single holiday this year.

Solo travel

Travel with g, myself and i.

Got an inner urge to get out and explore, but none of your travel buddies can make it happen? Sure, you could hit the road all on your own. But going with a small group gives your solo trip more structure, guidance and safety, letting you get head-to-toe immersed in our world.

Our most popular solo trips

Why travel solo with g adventures, you’re in good hands.

All our trips are led by a Chief Experience Officer, aka CEO. These locally based expert guides are your adventure’s captain, keeping things moving, organized, and as safe as can be.

Easy on the wallet

Why should traveling solo be more expensive? We treat single travelers the same as the rest of the group, which is why we don’t charge single supplements.

Freedom to do you

Your trip is just that – yours. Want to linger at the market or grab a table at that cozy café? Go right ahead. We give your trip structure, but also plenty of free time.

Connection comes standard

With group sizes typically ranging from 12 to 16 people, you’ll have built-in community and connection with equally adventurous travelers from all over the world.

Always female friendly

Traveling solo as a woman can feel risky, but we’re committed to keeping everyone on our trips as safe as possible at all times. From our CEOs to our same-sex roommates, all women can adventure with confidence.

Some privacy, please

Want a room all to yourself? We offer single travelers a "My Own Room" option, meaning you could have a private room (and personal washroom) for your entire trip.

Know before you go

Never traveled solo or gone as part of a group before? We can get you sorted. Check out some of our most frequently asked questions or  get in touch with us any time.

We offer the “My Own Room” option on most of our tours, which guarantees you a room of your own for a modest additional fee. Cost and details of “My Own Room” vary according to the specific trip, so be sure to consult our trip summary pages for full details. On some tours, a single room may not be available at certain overnight stops, depending on the style of accommodation.

Wherever your heart takes you! Just about any place worth exploring is a good spot to venture out on your own.

Our groups often experience a good mix of ages, everything from travellers in their early-20s to those aged 60 and over. We sort all of our trips into Travel Styles, which guarantee that you’ll be travelling with people who share the same interests you do. Over the years, we’ve found that a good range of ages within a group often adds to the experience

On most evenings, your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) will organize a group meal. It’s pretty flexible; you can choose to dine with the group or head off and do your own thing. Other nights, your CEO may recommend a few nearby restaurants you can try. Again, you determine whether you want to stick with the group or go it alone.

Most of our trips split pretty evenly down gender lines. We average roughly 60:40 female-to-male, so you’ll never feel outnumbered.

On most G Adventures tours, the ratio of solo travellers to others (couples, friends travelling together, etc) is roughly 40:60. For privacy reasons, we can’t share information about your soon-to-be travelling companions ahead of time. Our tours appeal to a wide cross-section of adventurous people from all over the world united by a desire to experience our planet from a grassroots level. Our tours are conducted in English and tend to attract travellers from North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

Read 5 SURPRISING PLACES TO TRAVEL IN 2023 FOR SOLO WOMEN OVER 60 .

Reasons Traveling Alone as a Woman Rocks

Margaret Manning, founder of Sixty & Me, tells us her reasons why traveling solo as a woman is both freeing and empowering.

In my 50s, with my kids out of the house and my ex-husband no longer in my life, I was finally free to explore the world in my own way. So, I took textile tours in India and Myanmar. I spent several nights in the rainforests of Bali. I learned yoga, took a cooking class in Italy and spent one month traveling through Europe by train.

Every one of these adventures was precious to me. I didn’t have to compromise with anyone to make them a reality. I just followed my heart.

Travelling alone as a woman over 50 feels different. More often than not, I am the one that young people turn to for advice. Nothing makes me happier than helping someone who I meet on the road to make a business connection or form a friendship. I have paid for dinners, been a shoulder to cry on and looked after children on 4 continents.

It is so wonderful to be able to give back a little bit! As a woman over 50, you have so much to offer the world! At home, you are one of many people living a normal life. On the road, you can be a hero!

When you travel alone, you are forced to face yourself. Sometimes the little girl that you find on the inside is fearful or timid. Other times, she is surprisingly brave and energized. Either way, she is wonderfully complex and worth talking to. You just need to remove the distractions so that you can hear her tiny voice.

On my last trip to Bali, I ended up singing 1970s songs in the back of a VW bus with my fake husband Alex. If that description sounds fascinating, trust me, it was much wilder in person!

I sometimes think that my kids (grown up now) are shocked by the photos I take on my trips. They would never imagine that I would receive a waterfall blessing or climb a volcano. They probably never expected to see me feed elephants at a sanctuary or learn Italian cooking.

These activities are like the pieces of my soul – diverse, complex, curious and wild. I hope that I will continue to travel alone as a woman well into my 80s.

Amazing Vacations for Single Women

#1: road scholar’s in the heart of the scottish highlands tour.

Road Scholar offers learning adventures where itineraries are perfectly curated to give the most immersive and educational experience to groups of travelers.

Discover what makes the Scottish Highlands one of Europe’s most unique natural wonders, as you learn the history of ancient lochs, clan lands, castles and glens. Let historians guide you on the Road Scholar’s 13 days In the Heart of the Scottish Highlands tour, where legend blends with history and that is sure to make you step back in time.

This is a small group with light walking, nothing too strenuous. The trip includes 11 breakfasts, 10 lunches, and 11 dinners.

Scottish Highlands

“Seeing so many places and learning so much in a relatively short time and in such a comfortable and well-organized way is what Road Scholar does best and this trip was everything I hoped it would be and more.” —Nancy, Marysville, CA

#2: Overseas Adventure Travel’s Ancient Kingdoms: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia

Visiting Asia with a tour group doesn’t have to be intimidating. Overseas Adventure Travel’s 18-day Ancient Kingdoms tour takes you to Bangkok, Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Angkor Wat with a small group.

Explore the Mekong River by boat, experience a tuk-tuk ride and learn about life in a floating village and a Hmong home. Visit the Killing Fields and Vietnamese tunnels used by the Viet Cong and gain insights into the southeast Asian conflicts that tore countries and families apart.

You must be in reasonably good physical condition to take this trip; you’ll be on the go for several hours each day and will need to be able to navigate uneven terrain and staircases.

This tour sells out quickly, possibly because OAT does not charge a single supplement on the Ancient Kingdoms tour. Airfare, visa fees, some gratuities, optional tours, some lunches and some dinners not included.

Sunset Over The Mekong River

“Thrilling dream retirement trip!

I cannot say enough about this trip! So enjoyed learning about different peoples and cultures. OAT really shines! And I especially like the side stops where local people were plying their trades. #3: The Caribbean 7-DAY CRUISE ON NORWEGIAN VIVA: Barbados, Antigua, and Saint Lucia

Norwegian Cruises’ newest ship to splash and join the fleet is the Viva. It is a state-of-the-art ship equipped with all the amenities and facilities to make your journey comfortable and memorable.

The 7-day cruise on Norwegian Viva is an exciting way to explore the Caribbean, with ports of call including Barbados, Antigua, and Saint Lucia, all departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

During your cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to explore each of the three beautiful Caribbean islands. In Barbados, you can enjoy the island’s famous beaches, explore historic Bridgetown, or take a tour of Harrison’s Cave. In Antigua, you can visit the historic Nelson’s Dockyard or relax on one of the island’s many beautiful beaches. In Saint Lucia, you can explore the island’s lush rainforest, visit the Pitons, or take a dip in the famous Sulphur Springs.

The Norwegian Viva also offers a variety of dining options, including specialty restaurants, buffets, and cafes, all featuring delicious cuisine prepared by expert chefs. You’ll also have access to onboard entertainment, including Broadway-style shows, live music, and themed parties.

#4: Inside Japan Tours’ Tokaido Trail

Inside Japan Tours takes a slightly different approach to small group tours. Instead of chartering buses to take tour participants from place to place, Inside Japan Tours guides show you how to use the efficient Japanese subway and rail systems and give you plenty of free time to see the sights that interest you. You’ll also be asked to carry your own luggage. In return, you’ll discover the wonders of Tokyo, Kyoto, Kamakura and Hakone on the Tokaido Trail tour .

During your time in Tokyo, you’ll explore historic Asakusa, modern Harajuku and vibrant Shinjuku. In Kamakura, you can visit shrines and temples, take a long walk through the town or stroll on the beach. From there, you will move to Hakone, at the foot of Mount Fuji. Hot springs, hiking and museums are just some of Hakone’s attractions. In Kyoto, tour the Geisha district, visit the Golden Pavilion, explore one of many UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city or take the train to Hiroshima or Nara.

Inside Japan Tours does not charge a single supplement on the Tokaido Trail tour; solo travelers will be given single rooms in Western-style hotels, but will need to share a room with a roommate of the same gender during the two nights spent in a ryokan (traditional, Japanese-style lodgings). Airport transfers, baggage handling, entrance fees, public transportation costs, lunches and most dinners are not included.

It’s important to note that the tour demands a lot of walking and carrying your own bags, so good physical fitness is required.

#5: A Do-It-Yourself Learning Vacation: Oxford University

An interesting way to spend your vacation is to learn something new! We are certainly never too old to go back to the classroom seats. Oxford University offers adults from around the world the opportunity to take one-week courses at its celebrated campus in the United Kingdom. Topics vary from year to year, but typically include creative writing, Shakespeare, philosophy, British literature and poetry.

You can apply for the program in February; early application is advisable, especially for solo travelers, as single accommodations fill very quickly. If you are accepted, you will need to complete a preliminary reading assignment and write an essay before your course begins. Further assignments will be determined by your course tutor. You’ll have time to explore the local area on your own during the week.

If you book on-campus accommodation at Rewley House, your room, board and tuition are all included in your quoted rate. You also have the option to find your own lodgings in Oxford. Airfare and ground transportation are not included.

This type of vacation is perfect for you if you are academic and curious.

#6: A Do-It-Yourself Brandywine Valley Vacation

Chemist E. I. du Pont made his fortune manufacturing gunpowder in Delaware’s Brandywine River valley, and built his Georgian mansion, Eleutherian Mills, near his powder mill on the riverbank. Today, you can tour the famous Brandywine Valley estates that belonged to succeeding generations of du Ponts.

Begin at the Hagley Museum and Gardens , where E. I. built his powder mill. Explore riverside paths and take a guided tour of Eleutherian Mills. Then, drive north to Winterthur Museum and Gardens , the most famous of the du Pont mansions. This immense estate includes 1,000 acres of gardens as well as the elegant Winterthur mansion, a showcase of the best in American decorative arts.

Continue your journey at the Nemours Mansion and Gardens . Take a guided tour of the French-style mansion and formal gardens, which are reminiscent of those at Versailles.

Finally, head across the Pennsylvania state line to Longwood Gardens . Wander through the outdoor gardens, watch a fountain show and explore the Conservatory. For deeper insight into Longwood Gardens’ history and the vision of Pierre du Pont, who created Longwood Gardens, buy a ticket for an Insider Tour or join an educational walk.

In order to make the most of your mansion and garden tours, plan to spend a night or two in a Brandywine Valley B&B or hotel. If you visit during the summer months, plan your itinerary and make reservations well in advance of your arrival. You’ll need a car to explore the Brandywine Valley on your own. Tip: Nemours Mansion and Gardens is open May through December only, and is closed on Mondays.

How to Fight the Single Supplement

A single supplement is a fee or surcharge that a solo traveler must pay in order to occupy a hotel room or ship state room alone. Single supplements can range from negligible to 100% of the double-occupancy rate.

Why Do Travel Providers Charge Single Supplements?

Tour operators and cruise lines normally base their prices on a per-person, double occupancy model. They do this because most hotel rooms and ship staterooms are built for two people. Solo travelers are often assessed a single supplement to cover the cost of not filling the second space in their room.

Tips for Avoiding the Single Supplement

  • Plan your travel during the off-season. Travel providers may be willing to negotiate with you in order to fill beds and tour spots.
  • Join a solo travelers’ group. You can find groups in your area or start your own at MeetUp.com . These groups often sponsor their own trips or have connections to travel agents and tour operators that cater to solo travelers.
  • If traveling in organized tours is not your thing, book your own solo itinerary. Rent a one-bedroom vacation apartment or find a room via Airbnb.com. Read up on safety concerns. Meet your host or landlord and find out about public transportation and local attractions. Then strike out on your own and explore your surroundings. Consider booking a day trip or walking tour if you prefer traveling with a guide.
  • Find a travel agency that specializes in singles’ travel, and ask about trips for people in your age group. Friendship Travel , based in Northern Ireland, offers vacations in Europe, the Caribbean and Africa; some trips are reserved for travelers age 50 or older.

A Sampling of Solo-Friendly Tour Operators and Cruise Lines

Norwegian Cruise Lines Norwegian Epic made the news with its Studio staterooms, specifically designed for solo travelers, and the Studio Complex and Lounge, which are for Studio passengers’ exclusive use. Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, and Pride of America also feature Studio staterooms.

The Schooner Lewis R. French , whose captain is a member of the Maine Windjammer Association, offers three- to six-night coastal Maine windjammer cruises. The schooner has five single cabins, and you won’t be charged a single supplement. You can even help sail the ship. Tip: There’s only one hot water shower onboard, so you’ll have to take turns.

Tauck offers single supplement waivers on select land tour departure dates. And, for river cruise fans, Tauck River Cruises waives the single supplement on Category 1 staterooms.

Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) waives the single supplement on some of its trips, including select small ship adventures. OAT also offers roommate matching.

Adventure Vacations for Single Seniors

If you love discovering new sites, exploring new scenery, and getting acquainted with the local flora and fauna, we recommend adventure-themed trips for seniors traveling alone. Depending on where you go, you can participate in guided tour options—or you can take the trip into your own hands and explore at your leisure.

The best part about adventure vacations for senior singles is that you have loads of options, both state-side and worldwide.

California's Pacific Coast Highway

One of the best state-side adventure trips a single senior could take is exploring California’s Pacific Coast Highway. This trip is a splendid opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty of the West Coast from the comfort of your own car.

The most popular way to experience this trip is to start in San Francisco and end in San Diego. While you drive, you’ll take in breathtaking views of the Bay Area, local surf towns, rocky coastlines, vineyards, quirky roadside attractions, and so much more. As you make your way to San Diego, we highly recommend stopping to enjoy the fresh seafood in local restaurants, taking a break to watch the sunset, and even stopping for a few days to enjoy California wine country.

If you’re looking to make your own agenda and move at your own pace, this trip will allow you to go when you’re ready, slow down when you want to explore more, and provide you with some unforgettable scenery every step of the day. Sites like California Crossings have DIY itineraries or you can look to book a guided tour through companies like Off the Beaten Path .

If you’re up for an adventure but looking for someone else to handle the specific logistics and details of planning, we recommend finding a tour group designed for seniors over the age of 50 or 60. One great option is ElderTreks , a global adventure travel company designed exclusively for people over the age of 60.

What we love about ElderTreks for single travelers over 60 is that you might start off the adventure alone, but you’ll meet a wonderful group of senior travelers along the journey. The best part of taking an adventure with ElderTreks is that they’ll handle all of the logistics—all you’ll have to do is pay one lump sum for your travel. Your meals, accommodations, tips, and transportation are all included, making it a very easy vacation to budget for and easily one of the best vacations for single seniors.

Explore Ireland by Rail and Road

Looking to soak in some lush and historic views? We recommend taking a jaunt through Ireland. With its well-established railroad lines, you can sit back and enjoy the scenery from a cozy train. No matter where you end up, you’ll discover abbeys, castles, coastal vistas, and picturesque postcard towns.

If you’re looking for modern sites, you can travel to major cities and soak up their artistic takes on food and more. It’s fairly easy to get around Ireland as most locals are bilingual and can provide you with English directions.

There are a number of railroad companies that provide tours, including Railroad Tours Ireland , which offers two nights in Killarney, two nights in Galway, and two nights in Dublin.

Tour Vacations for Singles Over 60

If you’re looking for a vacation for singles over 60 where all you have to do is show up, consider a tour-based vacation. With many options to choose from in the United States and the world as a whole, you’ll enjoy a guided tour or adventure with the opportunity to socialize with a larger group.

The Himalayas

Are you someone who loves breathtaking views and staying active? Join a tour group going to the Himalayas! These mountains are the perfect place to explore the world through a peaceful, relaxing adventure.

Most tour groups provide a mix of activities including hiking, spa treatments, yoga retreats, and meditation. As you’re traveling with a group, this trip can be a particularly good fit for a single senior woman. Plus, one perk of traveling with a guided tour is that you can make new friends with other travelers whom you may not have encountered in any other circumstances.

A trip like this is sure to lead you to your own inner zen — making it one of the best vacations for singles over 60 who are looking to do some soul searching amidst beautiful scenery and culture. You can learn more from Escape Himalaya , TrekkingMart , and Active Adventures .

Machu Picchu in Peru

Your retirement is the perfect time to visit some of the world’s most historic and magnificent sites. Of course, Machu Picchu makes the list as one of the best vacation spots for single seniors because it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Sit e—and one of the Seven Wonders of the World !

Since it’s such a well-established travel destination, there are loads of travel groups that come to share the magic of this ancient Incan citadel and temple. With a large number of group tour options, you can find one that will have just the right level of physical activity for you.

There are opportunities to hike the trail or enjoy a more leisurely view from one of the many rail services. No matter what kind of vacation you’re looking for, there is something for everyone at Machu Picchu.

Kruger National Park, Africa

If you’re an animal lover or have always enjoyed watching nature documentaries about Africa’s incredible wildlife, consider a guided tour to Kruger National Park in Africa. It’s every animal lover’s dream to go on an authentic African safari to see the “big five” and Kruger National Park is known for its sightings of elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and buffalos.

Within the park, you can experience the African wild in comfort. With many lodging options, you can book a tour that will grant you your dream vacation complete with all the amenities you’re looking for and more.

And when you book a tour-style trip, it allows you to experience the location—but with the extra element of community, you’ll get to build friendships with other solo travelers over 60 and maybe plan a few more trips together!

Resort Trips For Seniors Traveling Alone

If you’re looking for the best holidays for single travelers over 60, we recommend considering resorts or all-inclusive vacations. There are thousands of all-inclusive vacations for single seniors all over the U.S. and the world, making your destination options almost as endless as the amenities list some of these places offer.

Resort vacations for single senior citizens are the perfect opportunity to relax however you want, play golf, read books, or soak in the sun by a picture-perfect pool or white-sand beach. What we love most about resorts is that you can move through your vacation at your own pace, doing exactly what you want and nothing you don’t.

Lone Mountain Ranch: Big Sky, Montana

If you’re looking for a wild west experience and one of the best senior vacations for singles, Lone Mountain Ranch must be considered. It’s about 18 miles from Yellowstone National Park, and the ranch is surrounded by the Montana Rockies. Just an hour away from the Bozeman Airport, it’s easy and accessible to reach.

With 27 historic cabins, you can find one that’s the perfect size for your needs. Plus, each cabin is equipped with an authentic wood stove, rustic furniture, stunning views, and tucked neatly away into a forested setting.

At Lone Mountain, you can go horseback riding on trails led by experienced cowboys to ensure a memorable and safe experience for all riders. You can also take a guided hike, go mountain biking, or even settle into the stream for some fly fishing. With the water nearby, you can take a canoe or a kayak to see some sights or spend the day relaxing in a tube on your way down the Madison River. They even have outdoor yoga classes, archery, ax throwing, and guided day trips to Yellowstone.

If you’re an active and adventurous single senior who loves nature, Lone Mountain Ranch is one of the best vacation spots for single seniors.

Cavallo Point: Sausalito, California

If you’re looking for a little bit of everything, try exploring Cavallo Point in Sausalito, California. Located at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, Cavallo Point is inspired by the 75,000 acres of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

What makes Cavallo Point stand out as one of the best vacations for single seniors is its stunning views, top-notch dining, and a wide assortment of cultural experiences. With a mix of historical architecture and contemporary design, you’ll stay in a room with a gorgeous view—and you’ll be just minutes away from the San Francisco area.

By staying at Cavallo Point, you can go biking, hiking, running, walking, and enjoy all that the Bay Area has to offer. With lots of outdoor fire pits, take in the views under the stars one night and fill your days with guided hikes, yoga classes, seaplane or helicopter tours, or a sunset cruise. This area is also home to a Healing Arts Center & Spa , so don’t forget to soak in some extra restoration and zen with a spa treatment or two.

Carlisle Bay, Antigua

Carlisle Bay is your classic beach resort located in the Caribbean. Known for being a luxurious location to vacation, Carlisle Bay offers both family and adult-only accommodations, making it a great place for single travelers over 60 to explore with friends or solo for a relaxing and refreshing time.

What truly elevates Carlisle Bay is the wonderful amenities. Their facilities are complete with immaculate tennis courts, spas, fitness centers, and outdoor yoga pavilions. Plus, you’ll enjoy extensive dining options, including four restaurants and three bars on the resort grounds so you can kick back and enjoy yourself. All-inclusive packages make this a seamless and stress-free vacation spot for single seniors over 60.

Vacations for Single Senior Women

If you’re hesitant to take a single trip as a senior lady, we’re here to ease your mind. Although traveling as a single senior woman can be overwhelming, the benefits will far outweigh any worries that you may have. Vacationing as a single senior woman offers you the freedom to enjoy yourself fully. Try planning a trip around your favorite hobbies or experiencing the destination you’ve always dreamed of.

Alaska, USA

If you are a single senior woman over the age of 60 living in the United States, Alaska offers an incredibly exciting vacation—and one that isn’t even out of the country. Enjoy giant whales and sea animals, grizzly and polar bears, and the glaciers in all their glory. Alaskan cruise ships provide accessible accommodations, highlighting the beauty of Alaska’s port cities, Juneau and Sitka.

If you’re less enthused about spending your time on a cruise, consider the Aurora Winter Train , which travels weekends between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Spring is a particularly popular time to enjoy the train as you can watch the Iditarod Sled Dog Race festivities happening in Anchorage.

Bungalows Key Largo: Key Largo, Florida

If there’s nothing you love more than a tropical oasis, consider Bungalows in Key Largo. This all-inclusive, adults-only resort is a magical and relaxing place to stay. Choose from a waterfront bungalow on the tranquil Gulf of Mexico or a bungalow perched among the lush botanical gardens, complete with a soaking tub and an outdoor shower.

At Bungalows, you can choose just how active you’d like to be. Try relaxing watersports, such as kayaking or snorkeling in the protected bay. Or join a beachfront yoga class before visiting the Zen Garden’s Spa steam room, sauna, or massage. To end the day, watch the sunset on the beach or spend your time on a catamaran cruise.

From the bustling downtown Sydney to the rural Outback, Australia is a great country to visit if you’re a single senior woman over 60. Odyssey Traveller offers several senior-friendly group tours, including one to the Southern Highlands and Canberra, to the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney, a tour of Melbourne, and so many more.

As a country, Australia has a charmingly laid-back atmosphere. And thanks to its vast size, Australia offers something for everyone. Try snorkeling or scuba diving near the Great Barrier Reef, enjoy some of the best beaches in the world, and live the relaxed Australian lifestyle.

Vacations for Single Senior Men

If you’re a single senior man over the age of 60, consider planning your own ideal vacation. Many men likely have their own idea of what makes the perfect vacation—so planning a solo trip focused on your own unique interests and hobbies can be a greatly rewarding experience.

Lions Dive Beach Resort, Curacao

For the single senior man over 60 with a love of activity and adventure, look no further than Lions Dive Beach Resort in Curacao. With a hotel located directly on the beach, Lions Dive Beach Resort offers a number of outdoor activities, including diving, swimming, mountain biking, and hiking. If you like scuba diving, you can get your scuba certificate at Lions Dive—and the resort will coordinate your lessons and training.

Plus, the idyllic resort features breathtaking views of the Caribbean sea, several delicious restaurants, and plenty of recommendations on how to spend your senior trip as a single.

Big Cedar Lodge: Ridgedale, Missouri

Although you might not immediately think of vacationing in Missouri, Big Cedar Lodge is a wilderness resort in the Ozark Mountains with an incredible list of amenities, activities, and more. Overlooking Table Rock Lake, Big Cedar Lodge offers cozy accommodations, spectacular restaurants, two full-service marinas, five golf courses, an activity center, a relaxing spa, and countless outdoor activities.

Whether you love golfing, skeet shopping, archery, or hiking, Big Cedar Lodge has something for everyone.

Sedona, Arizona

For active seniors looking for a perfect setting to explore, try Sedona. Surrounded by majestic red rocks and no shortage of hiking trails, Sedona is often hailed as one of the most beautiful areas to visit in the United States.

Although Sedona is well known for its wonderful hiking, biking, and outdoor activities, you can also enjoy Jeep tours or hot air balloon rides to fully immerse yourself in all that the city has to offer. Less than a two-hour drive from the Phoenix airport, Sedona is definitely somewhere to visit if you’re a senior single over 60 looking for a relaxing but invigorating adventure.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort, South Carolina

If there’s nothing you love more than golfing, consider a trip to Kiawah Island Golf Resort on a stunning barrier island off the coast of South Carolina. You’ll probably remember Kiawah from the 2021 PGA Championship. The Resort features five spectacular courses, including Turtle Point designed by the one and only Jack Nicklaus.

Planning an entire vacation centered around golf is a wonderful vacation for single men. Plus, you’ll be close to Charleston so if you want to spend the day downtown shopping or taking in the local sights, it’s convenient and easy to access.

Tips for Seniors Traveling Alone

If you’re new to traveling alone as a senior over 60, it might feel daunting or overwhelming—but the benefits of traveling as a senior solo are countless. Here are a few tips for seniors traveling alone:

  • Start small. One of the easiest ways to get comfortable traveling on your own as a senior is to start small. Pick a few local destinations in your comfort zone—and plan your itinerary. Once you’ve done a local trip, or even a day trip or two, you’ll likely feel more confident and self-assured. If there’s a more intense trip on your bucket list, you’ll be well-prepared for it.
  • Try something new. If you’re in your retirement years and adventuring without a set schedule, don’t hold yourself back from trying something new. Have you always wanted to try something in particular but never did? Now is your perfect chance to explore and experiment.
  • Use technology. Although there might be a learning curve when it comes to new technologies, relying on tech during your travels can be a huge help. From scheduling a ride-share service such as Uber or Lyft from your phone to checking in for your flight with one tap, using technology as a senior single traveling can help alleviate stress and extra work.
  • Make friends. If you have hesitation about traveling alone, consider a guided tour group that caters to senior citizens. Although you may arrive and depart alone, being in a group situation will provide you with friends and acquaintances to spend time with, enjoy a meal together, or even go for a hike or outdoor excursion together.
  • Listen to your gut. When traveling to new areas, pay attention to your surroundings and trust your gut. Try to stay in well-lit, well-populated areas and remain in public spaces. Another great way to support your overall safety is to arrive during the daytime—avoid scheduling your arrival after dusk falls.

25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You’ll Love

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 04/04/2024

A few years ago there were hardly any single travel groups that offered options for holidays for one – let alone companies who entirely focused on solo departures and looked at things like no single supplements etc and solo travel groups.

Thank goodness for the growth in singles travelling as now there is a good economic reason for companies to look at developing great offers for those looking for holidays for one.

There are now singles travel groups over 30s, single travel for over 50, singles travel getaways, luxury solo travel tours and singles travel getaways galore.

I will let you know which of these tour companies I have traveled with and which I haven’t – if you then go and do a tour on one of the ones I haven’t been on please do let me know what they are like – and I would love you to write a guest post if you’re up for it.

There are so many options for solo traveling today – here are some great trips for single travelers.

1. Group Tours for Solo Travellers

Explore is perhaps one of the best singles travel groups. It is also the company I have been a traveling single with the most so the best place to start! Explore has been running since 1981 so they have loads of experience with running tours.

Explore covers over 100 countries and has a maximum group size of 11 and there is no single supplement if you take a shared room. There is an option to have your own room but that does cost extra. They prioritize working with locals and do a great job finding expert guides.

Around 60% of people who go on Explore trips are traveling on their own and they break down solo vacations into age groups on their website which is really helpful.

My second recommendation for solo travel vacations is G Adventures . They have a wide range of small-group trips designed for the solo traveler. There is no single supplement as long as you are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex. G Adventures also offers single rooms at reasonable prices if that is your preference.

The itineraries for G Adventures trips tend to have more free time than some of the other tour companies in this article. This is great if you are someone that likes to have some time to yourself to relax or explore further but want the support and structure of an organised group trip.

One of the most difficult parts of solo travel can be dinner. Eating on your own can feel lonely and isolating. The tour leader organizes group meals most nights, so if you want company you will almost be able to find it.

If you are traveling alone one of the best ways not to feel like it is to join a group doing some challenge – when I summited Kilimanjaro on an organized solo tour. we were a team from almost the word go. More than half of the trip was traveling solo – some were single, some had partners who didn’t want to go, some like me had someone pull out last minute etc.

It didn’t matter who you had arrived with – what mattered was everyone wanted someone to talk to about whether or not to take Diamox, tips on altitude, share lollies, etc etc.

Meg and Mar also run female-only small group tours that range from luxury retreats to adventurous expeditions in some awesome locations.

3. Luxury Single Traveller Vacations

One company I have been particularly keen to try but it just hasn’t worked out on timings and destinations is Flash Pack . I love the tone and feel of their website – it is very much about boutique adventures.

They focus on people in their 30s and 40s and seem to have some great travel groups for solo travelers.

woman poses in front of a temple in bhaktapur nepal

Australian based Travelling Divas also promises boutique hotels and customized trips. I have also been very keen to try Cox and Kings solo holidays .

Cox and Kings have a great reputation as a high-end travel specialist so I am highly confident that the thread count on their sheets will be up to my standards based on how fantastic their hotels look.

These trips though will, of course, be at a premium to some of the other options I have mentioned. But their group travel singles options look terrific.

4. Solo Travel Companies that are specifically for traveling alone

I would highly recommend that you think beyond the country you live in when it comes to solo travel groups. For example, quite a few travel companies based in Australia now run specific holidays for solo travel groups.

Encounter Travels is all about solo travel but not traveling alone as they say.

red sands with a path and shadow of person taking photo in namibia

They also age match so if you are a 35-year-old solo traveler you won’t be in a group of people in their 70s. They do have quite a few trips to various parts of Australia but also a few trips to other places around the world.

Another solo travel company based in Australia is Twos a Crowd . Some UK based companies that specialize in solo travel groups are:

5. Companies that specialise in Adventure

For a more adventurous bent check out    8th-day adventures . They are a London based club that has lots of sporting events and other fun things that are a mix of social and activity.

They also run some group holidays which could be good for the more adventurous solo traveler eg Everest base camp

An interesting-sounding organization is Archaeo Adventures. This female-focused travel company looks at adventures in countries like Morocco and Jordan in small groups. They are about boutique hotels, working with locals, and off-the-beaten-track experiences.

Female-focused hosted adventure trips are also the focus of Living Big which is US-based. Another company specializing in solo travel groups USA is Overseas Adventure Travel , which offers some fantastic-sounding trips for adventurous solo travelers.

Heading to Australia there are Adventurous Women and Another World Adventures.  Another World Adventures curates adventures from different providers. It is a very comprehensive site with loads of options that sound great.

6. Cruises for Solo Travelers

Even cruise ships have gotten on board with the growth in solo travel. Norwegian Cruise Line is the brand most commonly mentioned for having actually built single cabins and apparently there is a dedicated area for solo travelers.

They have several cruise brands – Norwegian Epic, Breakaway, Getaway, and Escape. But ensure you look closely as these can be more family-focused at certain times of the year – check out my top tip 2 below.

Encounter Travel also has loads of information on solo cruise options. They even have a “cabin mates wanted” section where you can potentially find another same-sex solo traveler with whom you can share a cabin.

7. Charity Based Solo Travel Companies

There are a few organisations that run group tours that have some activity/challenge that supports a charity. These can be a great way to find others to travel with and the shared sense of purpose can surely add to the group bond.

Have a look at Global Adventure Challenges and Charity Challenge.

8. Passion-based Solo Travel Tours

An organized trip around an activity you love that is also about solo travel is a fantastic formula to follow. Even if you don’t really bond with anyone on the trip if you have learned more about Italian cooking or photographing sea life it is a well-spent holiday.

Quite a few organizations I have listed above offer planned trips around passions and hobbies. Here are a few others I’ve found:

Frui has some fantastic looking passion-based trips – from photography (a great one for solo travel) to painting to food in some lovely locations. I did a day class with them once in London in photography and they were great.

The Red Sea in Egypt appears to be a very popular solo travel spot – most likely driven by the amount of activity that can be done in the water. There are also numerous diving and/or underwater photography courses in the area.

woman and small hut with tree in namibia

Skyros is a very famous spot in Greece for activity/passion-based trips. They used to have a bit of a self-help bent but now they are very focused on passions like painting, singing, yoga, and learning.

They have two locations in Greece and one on the Isle of Wight for taster weekends. According to their site, 70% of their travelers are between 40 and 60, and most travel solo. This is a great option if you’re looking for singles travel groups over 40.

9. Something Different for Single Travel Groups

In August 2017, I spent a month living life Unsettled in Medellin Colombia, and loved it. Unsettled is a fantastic concept. Essentially it aims to give people the experience of living in a city for a month rather than being a tourist.

It does this because it has about 25-30 people sign up, organizes apartments and coworking space and sets up activities that you can participate in as much or as little as you like.

The other people on the trip are your community, the hosts act as your connection to local life and having an apartment and workspace means it feels more like living.

They choose brilliant locations from Buenos Aires to Cape Town to Barcelona . I highly recommend checking them out.

If you decide to live life Unsettled then use the code “FRIENDSOFUNSETTLED”  and tell them that the Boutique Adventurer sent you for a discount of USD$150 .

Solo Travel Tips

1. mix up your plans.

A great way to travel solo is to mix things up. If you were heading to say Australia you could go and stay in a spa for a few days (a great way to meet people), head to say Sydney on your own and stay at a boutique hotel and use Tinder or join a meetup group.

You could then join an organized tour with someone like Explore, travel with them for a while, and then have some time solo again. Committing to a lengthy organized tour can be a bit much – plus it is hard to find one that covers everything that you want.

I find a mix is optimal – if you feel lonely it is only a few days till you have company, if you’re dying to be on your own again it’s only a few days till that happens. And you may very well meet others traveling alone on your organized section who are keen to have further adventures after the tour.

I have many friends I have met when traveling solo who become travel buddies and loads of other friends of mine are the same.

2. Avoid School Holidays

September is a great time to travel solo. Be careful of all organized tours/cruises etc during any school holiday time, particularly over the summer, as you may end up surrounded by families.

However, school has returned in September, and there are often many deals for solo travelers.

3. Fill Up your Kindle

There is nothing like a good book to keep you company when traveling solo! I keep adding to my list – please email me with more suggestions! [email protected] .

I keep them all in my Amazon shop. And I have just launched a range of e-books aimed at solo travelers! I have an ebook on Solo Travel, my trip to Colombia with Unsettled and Everest Base Camp .

Frequently Asked Questions about Solo Travel

Are there travel companies just for single people.

Flash Pack group adventures - flashpack.com

Yes! There are several travel companies just for single people as well as companies like G Adventures that offer trips designed for single travelers.

What is the best holiday destination for singles?

korea_daegu_yellow-bicycle

In my opinion, rather than focusing on a particular destination singles should look at holidays with a focus or goal like a cycling trip or a trek. This is most likely to bring together like-minded people and provide a common purpose.

Is solo travel lonely?

woman on train platform with suitcase

It can be. The best way to avoid feeling lonely when traveling solo is to join an organised tour. Or if you are on your own look at staying in high-end hostels for some comfort and the chance to meet others. And a good book can transport you from any difficult situation! And don’t forget to check out things like the safest cities in the US to make sure you can relax during your trip.

How do I meet other female solo travelers?

COMO Shambhala Estate bali - woman in yoga post with support

There are several facebook groups for female solo travelers such as Solo Female Travelers (who also organise group trips for solo female travelers). I have also found that going to a spa/yoga retreat can be a good way to meet other female solo travelers.

Great ideas. I have done a lot of solo tour travel as I like the security of a tour when I am on my own. Some other companies:

Contiki is great for the 18-35s, especially when you haven't travelled much before.

My favourite company is G Adventures, no single supplement, but you can pay for your own room and a huge range of tours world wide. They are Canadian based. All ages, very budget and affordable.

Another one very similar to G Adventures but Australian based is Intrepid tours. World wide, budget, no single supplement but also has own room option if you don't want to share.

I have made life long friends on these tours when I was travelling solo. Now we meet up all over the world and do tours together!

‘I don’t have a travel buddy’: More older adults are flying solo by choice

While Karen Reimer has traveled alone extensively for business, she recently started vacationing alone.

In 2022, Reimer traveled solo on a trip to Copenhagen and Stockholm. She liked the experience so much that she’s planning to travel solo in 2025 in separate trips to Iceland and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“There was a mix of couples and singles,” said Reimer, 68, who booked her trip through the tour company Road Scholar. “I would have thought it was awkward if I was the only single there. I was most appreciative of the fact that I was not the fifth wheel.”

The Argentina trip will be a solo-travelers-only trip that’s part of an effort by Road Scholar to cater to older, individual travelers. Going on a solos-only trip appeals to Reimer, who recently sold her financial-planning business and works part time as a consultant in Overland Park, Kan.

“I think the Buenos Aires trip will have a different vibe to it. I think there will be more camaraderie, more friendships formed, but still have time to follow your own pleasure and have your own time alone,” Reimer said.

Reimer contrasted her comfort in traveling alone with older generations like her parents, who always traveled together. Her mother, for example, would never have imagined spending a night alone in a hotel without her husband, Reimer said.

“It was not overwhelming to me in the least to travel alone,” she said.

Meanwhile, Laura Gaudet, a retired professor from Monterey, Calif., has traveled to New Mexico, Egypt and Italy as a solo traveler and is going to Greece and Turkey in May, all through Road Scholar. The solo experience has been so positive that she’s already signed up for a solos-only trip to India in 2025.

“There’s a whole bunch of us — women mostly — who don’t have anyone to travel with. I don’t have a travel buddy,” said Gaudet, 73.

Almost half (49%) of women over age 65 don’t have partners, according to the Pew Research Center.

Gaudet tried going solo on a cruise, but it wasn’t her favorite. She prefers traveling solo with a group that allows her to have some time with people of similar interests, get some education and culture, and still have the comfort of her own room.

Gaudet said she’s already faced her worst travel fear, and handled it calmly and with grace.

“The thing I worried about the most — getting lost — happened in China. I thought, ‘I have the name and address of my hotel, I have money in my pocket and I’ll be fine.’ And I was fine,” recalled Gaudet, who added that the experience made her feel bolder.

Road Scholar, which specializes in educational travel for older adults, recently launched a new series of trips designed exclusively for solo travelers over 50 years old, due to growing demand. The solos-only destinations range from Louisiana and Lima to Italy and India. The company welcomes solo travelers on any of its tours, but the new trips cater to individual travelers exclusively.

“We serve tens of thousands of solo travelers every year, so we understand their unique needs,” said Maeve Hartney, chief program officer at Road Scholar. “These new programs have a greater comfort level and more opportunities to make new friends.”

The trips encourage a sense of camaraderie, Hartney said, and participants bond over shared experiences.

About 20% to 30% of Road Scholar’s 80,000 to 100,000 travelers each year go solo, and that percentage is on the rise, the company said. Much of the trend has been driven by older women traveling without their spouses, according to Road Scholar, which said about 85% of its solo travelers are women.

Road Scholar is not the only company that has seen increased demand for solo travel.

Norwegian Cruise Line reported that between 2019 and 2022, it saw an increase in guests booking accommodations as single occupants in its nonstudio staterooms.

To cater to the solo market — and not just older adults — Norwegian recently expanded its offerings to more than 1,500 solo staterooms across its 19-ship fleet. Although the company first introduced solo staterooms in 2010, it now offers a variety of choices from studios to solo rooms with balconies, the cruise line said. It also offers lounges on some ships that are now accessible to guests staying in the solo-category staterooms, so that they can mix and mingle with like-minded travelers.

“The solo-stateroom expansion, while in part due to the evident rise in solo-travel popularity, is a direct response to NCL’s guests’ feedback that they desire additional solo-accommodation options that are more spacious and allow for better destination and ocean views,” Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement.

Older adults, in general, are a big market for travel. Travelers aged 50 and older tend to take frequent trips — as many as four per year, according to AARP. Typically family and multigenerational trips are domestic trips, while international travel tends to be bucket list trips done without grandkids in tow, according to AARP.

Older adults will spend an average of $6,659 on vacations this year, which is about the same as their average travel budgets last year, AARP said.

“People are traveling throughout the retirement years, but more travel is happening in younger years,” said Patty David, AARP’s vice president of consumer insights.

The idea of a “travel bucket list” is common, with 75% of travelers in their 50s having one. That compares to 69% of adults aged 60 to 69 and 60% of Americans aged 70-plus, AARP said. Barriers to taking on those bucket-list trips include health issues (21%), inflation and travel costs (15%), and global unrest (13%), according to AARP.

Top domestic trips for older adults this year include Florida (16%), California (10%) and Las Vegas (5%), per AARP. Arizona, New York, Chicago and Michigan are also popular — though Texas has dropped off the list as a favorite vacation destination for the 50-plus crowd, AARP said.

Europe is the most sought-after international destination (41%) for older travelers, with Italy, Spain, Great Britain and France topping the list, according to AARP. Next, travelers are looking at trips to Latin America and the Caribbean (36%) — with Mexico, the Bahamas and Aruba being top destinations there.

“When older adults make travel plans, they are making them come to fruition. Where there are trips they intend to do, they actually do them and stay true to their plans,” David said.

Travelling single? Small group travel could be just the ticket

Is a Japanese onsen calling you? Or maybe a flavour-packed taco in the streets of Mexico City has your name on it? Whether you’re travelling solo, single or simply can’t be labelled, our small group tours are the perfect way to explore a destination and meet like-minded people. While our tours aren’t exclusively for single travellers in their 50s or 60s , you'll be part of a small group of intergenerational, adventure-hungry individuals who are just as keen to explore as you are. From swapping anecdotes over Aperols on the Amalfi Coast to late-night chats under the desert skies of Wadi Rum, it’s often those moments of connection – big and small – that are most memorable.

Perks of travelling single with Intrepid

Travellers toasting on an Intrepid tour in Morocco

Single and keen to mingle?

Our trips can be great for singles over 50 and 60 as we take care of safety, logistics and transport so you can focus your time on the joy of travel. We don’t offer the classic ‘singles-only’ tours, but we do provide the perfect base for people looking to get to know others, usually a varied mix of ages, nationalities, cultures and more. Since our tours are so diverse, this could mean you’re on a trip with couples in their 40s, singles in their 20s, family groups or people travelling on their own in their fifties and beyond. Our tours aren’t specifically designed for making perfect matches, but hey, if it happens, it happens .

Small numbers, big sites

The best part of travelling in a small group is the friends you can make in the most unlikely of places – we’re talking while hiking the Inca Trail or cooking dhal in  Sri Lanka . It also means a bunch of new faces to share the world’s most epic experiences with and a few people around to watch your back (especially when walking through a traffic crossing in Vietnam ). No matter who you’re sharing your tour with, you’ll be docking at unbelievable sites, meeting local people and getting a one-of-a-kind journey - single or not, we think that's pretty epic.

Safety and logistics

Travelling solo at any age can feel like a big deal, especially when venturing to far-off places. That’s why small group tours are the perfect fit, no matter if you’re travelling alone at 25 or 65. We’ll do the planning, manage the itinerary, handle the transport and keep safety in mind - all so you can immerse yourself to the max. Not to mention, your guide will be able to support you with potential language barriers, give recommendations, show you the best spots for photos and so much more. Don’t just take our word for it, find out for yourself.

Local knowledge and unique perspectives

Maybe you’ve already seen the big sites and now looking for a different experience or new perspective. That’s where we come in. Our tours are led by our Local Leaders, all of whom are experts in their corner of the world and are out there showing it to others right now. Their knowledge of their country’s attractions, delicacies, cultures and communities is something you probably won’t get to experience elsewhere. Find yourself ducking into unknown hotspots and learning more than just the basics when you’re on one of our tours.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

What Our Clients Say

20 out of 10.

The trip was just great - I can't really think of any negatives. Diane will back me up when I say I usually give 10/10s - I gave her 20/10. Trish, Canada/Alaska

Excellent trip

I found the overall trip excellent. I believe Diane's professionalism, inclusive personality and ability to relate to all contributed to this. She worked to ensure the group was cohesive without individuals impinging on the personal space of others etc. a good skill to have and one she applied effectively. Kate, Canada/Alaska

Fantastic value for money

Fantastic value for money paid. Russell our guide is an asset to your company... he was fantastic! Overall the trip was magical from start to finish. Well done Two's a Crowd ... the best trip ever. Barbara, Canada/Alaska

Fantastic first solo trip

I had a fantastic trip. Absolutely loved Canada and Alaska. It's the first time I have travelled solo and was pleasantly surprised to find a bunch of people that all got on so well. Diane our host was great. She did a good job of getting us altogether for meals, excursions, shopping trips etc. I liked that she quietly got things done without being loud or "in-your-face". She was good at being one of us as well as our leader. Wendy, Canada/Alaska

Good balance of activities and spare time

Had a great time. Good mixture of organised activities and spare time. Diane was an excellent tour host. Russell the tour guide was great, very knowledgeable and personable with his insights into growing up and living in Canada. Sharon, Canada/Alaska

Well organised trip with an excellent host

The trip was well organised, with a good mix of activity and free time. The scenery was spectacular and fellow travellers were a great bunch. Diane is a excellent host - helpful, courteous and above all a pleasure to know. I found her bubbly personality a bonus and can only speak highly of her. Gary, Canada/Alaska

I had a fabulous time

I had a fabulous time. Lake Louise and the hotel were magnificent. The cruise was excellent. Diane made sure that she was available for group meals and sightseeing, and was alway in good humour and great fun. I would recommend your company to everyone and am very interested in the Scandinavia  tour at the end of 2017.

Cathy, Adelaide - Canada/Alaska May 2016

Great holiday

What a great trip! I experienced so much and participated in all that was offered. I had read and reviewed as much as time allowed me but was not prepared for what the trip gave me and that is a better understanding of the beautiful people of both countries. - Lesley on Vietnam/Cambodia

In good company

I thought the suggestions for optional things to do, in the "free" time were very good. So good, we really ended up with very little free time. So much to do! - Mary on Vietnam

Great time together

I found the trip interesting and eye opening with a great overview of both Vietnam and Cambodia. The other travellers on the trip were fabulous and we had a great time together. - Anonymous on Vietnam/Cambodia

Fantastic first experience!

Extremely well organised with fabulous guides throughout - especially in Vietnam! First holiday with your company and certainly not the last. - Glenys on Vietnam

Great group to travel with

Having a small group meant that the days were more relaxed and flexible and I really felt spoilt and looked after. Melinda on Borneo

Thoroughly enjoyed Uganda

Thoroughly enjoyed my trip especially Uganda. There was so much variety of things to do on this trip. Jaros & Julius were great. Thought in Kenya the Maasai Mara were beautiful people, so easy to get along with. Judy

Can’t stop talking about my experience

I just feel so privileged to have shared with the Maasai the most awe-inspiring majestic sights and sounds of Africa. The fantastic memories will be with me forever. Maureen

Absolutely enjoyable

Gillian was a fantastic host. She was there for us from the moment we reached Hotel Troy. Heather on Africa

Best holiday I’ve been on!

One of the best holidays that I have been on - really well organised. I would never have travelled to Vietnam or Cambodia on my own. Bronwyn

Well organised

Fun, well organised and a really great group. Barbara on Vietnam/Cambodia

I found the trip interesting and eye opening with a great overview of both Vietnam and Cambodia. The other travellers on the trip were fabulous and we had a great time together.

Fabulous rapport filled with much humour!

A great bunch of people & I can't believe how we all had such a fabulous rapport filled with much humour!!!

I couldn’t fault anything.
