6 Rocky Mountain Hikes that are Perfect for Solo Travelers

6 Rocky Mountain Hikes that are Perfect for Solo Travelers

Having explored many of the mountain ranges east of the Mississippi, I wanted to savor the best for last: the majestic Rockies! I have found the Rocky Mountains to be the most diverse in its landscape and in its plant life, with everything from lush pines and aspen forests to deserts with a variety of flowering cacti and the highest sand dunes in all of America. Because Colorado is the state with the most peaks above 14,000 feet, I decided that it was definitely the place to start my exploration of the Rockies. Much to my delight, I found lone female mountain climbers and hikers fearlessly enjoying the beauty of nature.

As a solo woman traveler, I take M.P.S. (My Personal Safety) very seriously. Though I like traveling with friends and family too, I’m always on the lookout for places that I enjoy alone. So,  how do I find these little nuggets of privacy and beauty? I ask the locals–and specifically, the female locals. Where are the little pockets of hideaways that they scurry off to when they want to let their hair down and still feel safe?  This not only saves me a  lot of time, but it also connect me t o local women.

So come along with me as I show you six off-the-beaten, Rocky Mountain safe havens that local women love. Because Colorado is known for its dry air, just be sure to bring more water that you usually might.

1. Cliff Diving in Paradise

Just on the outskirts of Colorado Springs, hidden from view by towering rock walls and forest lies a deep emerald jewel that the locals call Paradise Cove. Its towering canyon walls and trails will open up, revealing a private world of hiking and sun bathing. For the more daring, its cliffs also provide three levels for diving into the cool pool of deep emerald colored water, nurtured by a small and gentle waterfall.

2. Hiking The Devil’s Backbone

Should you be on your way to visit Rocky Mountain National Park, be sure to stop once you hit Loveland and ask the locals where to find the Devil’s Backbone. Once you enter the tree-laced trails, you’ll see his spiny backbone rising above the grassy plains. Keep your eyes peels for ravens and red-tailed hawks. This is a great place for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Or you can just sit on the Devil’s spine and contemplate.

3. Over 180 Feet of Cascading Ribbons of Color

I was on my way to explore Pike’s Peak country when I overheard two locals gleefully sharing their photos. So, I smiled and asked what all the excitement was about. “Seven Falls!” the taller of the two blondes squealed. When they took notice of my quizzical expression, they held their iPhones up to show me photos of a 181-foot , 7-tiered waterfall cascading down jewel-toned granite cliffs.

I decided right then and there that Pike’s Peak was going to have to wait. By evening, the color junky in me was so glad I did!

Locals have been visiting this hidden gem since 1859 and now, for a small amount of energy, you can climb the 224 iron stairway to the very top. If you are not quite up for the climb, there’s always the elevator ready to take you to the Eagle’s Nest for panoramic views. The cave’s museum has Native American displays and you’ll also find a dining room and gift shop.

Make sure to head there at night. At dusk, the lights come on and the falls cascade like multi-colored ribbons dancing over the granite walls.

4. A Bird Lover’s Paradise

While passing through the “Gateway to the Rockies,” commonly known as Golden, Colorado, you’ll see two vast mesas. Ask the locals which one is North Table Mesa and plan a day to explore this geological beauty. Formed from ancient lava flows, this mesa is enveloped in trails, wildlife, and crystals.

It also has water and is a “hot spot” destination for many species of nesting birds, making it a bird lover’s paradise. Golden eagles and red-tailed hawks live on the mesa as well. And if you enjoy rock climbing, these lava flows will prove exciting even for beginners.

5. Peaceful Havens in the Flat Irons

Abruptly rising out of the plains like the jagged teeth of an ancient behemoth, flattened by the celestial gods irons are the Flat Irons of Boulder . Experienced rock climbers will be rewarded with incredible views. Hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, and fantastic photography opportunities are just a few things you can plan on as well as cross-country skiing and sled riding in the winter.

6. A Place For Meditation and Yoga

6 Rocky Mountain Hikes that are Perfect for Solo Travelers

You’re deep in the wilderness. It’s just you and the cliffs, and a gentle breeze across your brow. Nature has even provided a bit of shelter with a shallow cave. This is a resting place to let your hair down, do some yoga and meditate. Or bring a picnic basket with wine and cheese and a good book.

You’ll find this little spot of heaven in the less visited side of Dinosaur National Monument on the Colorado side. (This park is split between the Colorado and Utah borders.) Take Harper’s Corner Road, right off of Highway 40. Out of all my Colorado travels, this was the place I was the most reluctant to leave.

For nature addicts – nature facts and tips on hiking with kids, 6 tips for traveling alone in the rockies.

traveling alone

Are you ready to do some traveling alone in the Rockies?

These 6 tips on traveling alone in the Rocky Mountains may be just the advice you need.  It’s time to stop dreaming and start exploring the Rocky Mountains today.

Roger Toll, superintendent of Rocky Mountain National Park between 1921 and 1929, once remarked that ‘it has been said that great views create great thoughts, and great thoughts create great men’. It is undeniable that he had in mind here the power of the Rocky Mountains to inspire all those who explore its beautiful terrain, which stretches nearly 3,000 miles in North America. Each year millions of visitors come to hike, camp, fish, hunt, bike, ski and snowboard. The Rockies are well-suited for family holidays, but they also offer a world of opportunity for the solo traveller.

Tip 1 – Plan, plan, and plan!

Just as one does not simply walk into Mordor, one does not simply walk through the Rocky Mountains. When travelling alone, it’s extra important to plan your trip carefully. Think about which season you want to travel in (the most popular time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park is June to September), find a good trail (check out Rocky Mountain Hiking Trails ), and print your maps.  You should also be sure to sort out travel insurance and make your reservations for transportation and accommodation far in advance as things fill up fast.  Much of your planning can be done on your phone, and this is a growing trend – the percentage of Indians booking their entire trip through their smartphone, for example, has now reached 87% .

Tip 2 – Pack Wisely

Think carefully about the weather when you pack your clothes, as you won’t be able to borrow clothes from anyone else if the weather gets hotter or colder than you were expecting. Choose a lightweight but hardy backpack and supportive footwear that is designed specifically for the terrain you’ll be hiking through. Pack outfits that you can layer as necessary. Don’t forget travelling essentials like a compass, an emergency space blanket, a bivy sack, waterproof matches, a pocket knife, a torch, a whistle, a first aid kit and insect repellent.

Tip 3 – Be Health Conscious

Give yourself several days to acclimatize to the altitude before you take any trails that go above tree line . Know your strengths and weaknesses, don’t push yourself over the limit, and make sure you bring all the medication that you need. Bring with you a statement of any medical problems and pre-existing conditions you have in case you run into trouble, as well as phone numbers for the local emergency services. Read the National Park Service’s health and safety guidelines before you leave, too.

Tip 4 – Be Financial Savvy

If you’re not careful, travelling can cost more than you’d expect. Check in advance if the campground you plan to stay in has a fee, and bring more cash than you think you’ll need in case of emergencies. You can keep the price of your trip down by finding coupons and discounts for transportation, car rentals and accommodation online.

Tip 5 – Stay In Touch

Give a friend or family member a detailed copy of your itinerary just in case you get lost or something happens and they need to find you. Throughout the trip, try to regularly update someone where you are and how the trip is going.

traveling alone

Tip 6 – Meet Others

Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with other people you encounter along the way. If you’ve brought a picnic lunch, offer to share it with others, and say hello to park rangers. Take advantage of the tours and talks that some parks offer. If you stay in a hostel, hang out for a bit in the common area – bring a pack of cards and invite someone to play. You’ve already got one thing in common with the people there – you all love the Rocky Mountains – so it’s a great chance to make new friends.

Reasons to Visit Alberta's Rocky Mountains

The Canadian Rockies are considered to be some of the most spectacular & scenic mountains in the world. Although the Rocky Mountains in Western Canada attract tourists mostly in the summer season, you will find amazing frozen beauty in the winter. It's impossible to cover the whole Rockies in a single trip. However, in a reasonable amount of time, say, 10 days, you can explore some beautiful places like Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper. Even if you don't have a car, there is regular public transportation in the winter months to these cities. There are several strong reasons to visit the Rocky Mountains in winter. If you can tolerate extreme cold, you will certainly experience some breathtaking landscapes in the midst of frozen lakes, surrounded by snow capped mountains.

Banff is a beautiful mountain town which is about 1.5 hours from Calgary. If you are interested in skiing, Banff will be a paradise for you. Hundreds of skiers from all over the world come to Sunshine Village in Banff for skiing in winter. Having a nice latte in a cafe downtown on a snowy evening can be really refreshing. The beautiful Banff Avenue looks like a street that goes straight and vanishes at the bottom of the mountain. It's an an ideal place to hang around and browse in the quaint little shops. Do a hike through Tunnel Mountain Trail – a hike with a moderate difficulty level. From the top of Tunnel Mountain you can see the town of Banff and other snow-capped mountains around. After a scenic hike of 2 Km you can reach the frozen Vermilion Lakes. Standing on the frozen lake at the end of the day and seeing the last rays of the sun on top of the mountains can bring you a real feeling of solitude. Taking a bus to Sulphur Mountain and dipping into the hot water of Banff Upper Hot Springs on a chilly winter day can be really amazing.

photo, image, frozen vermilion lake, rocky mountains

Frozen Vermilion lake at the end of the day

Canmore is a small town surrounded by mountains, which is about a 25 minute drive from Banff. Picturesque mountains are all around, especially the Three Sisters peaks. You can walk through the trail of Bow River, which is really beautiful. The snow covered valley and the semi-frozen river with the mountain peaks looks spectacular. Take your time to hike to Grassi Lakes or Cougar Creek.

Lake Louise

Situated about 60 Km from Banff, Lake Louise is a remote place. The downtown area has a few shops, but this is an amazing place to enjoy the wild beauty in solitude. If you do the 5 Km hike from downtown to Lake Louise through the snowy pine forest beside the road, you will be amazed. The frozen Lake Louise looks like a paradise. Take a walk to the end of the lake and see the plane of six glaciers. It is so picturesque. The iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Resort Hotel just beside the lake is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It looks beautiful from the other side of the frozen lake with the mountains in the background. You might see some snow sculptures there. One of the greatest attractions of Lake Louise is Moraine Lake. Although the road is closed in winter, you can reach there by cross country skiing. Make sure that you are strong enough to cover the 28 Km return trip from downtown through the snow. If you can, it's worth pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone to reach the frozen lake at the Valley of Ten Peaks, which you may recognize from the old Canadian $20 bill.

Frozen Moraine Lake & the Valley of Ten Peaks

Jasper is a cute and picturesque remote mountain town, situated about 230 Km from Lake Louise. Take a tour to the frozen Maligne Canyon. There are incredible ice formations inside the canyon, a stunning combination of transparent, blue, and rock hard ice. You may be lucky to see some ice climbers climbing the frozen waterfalls there. A drive or hike to Pyramid Lake will be really scenic. Walk from Pyramid Island through the frozen lake, with Pyramid Mountain in the background. A few minutes of walking can take you to Patricia Lake. Jasper has many hiking trails and several lakes including Medicine Lake and Maligne Lake. There are chances of seeing wildlife around, as well. If you are really lucky, you can witness the Northern Lights in the winter months too!

The All-new 2023 Rocky Mountain Solo Carbon + Redesigned Alloy Models

Cannondale Topstone LAB71 Frameset

Previous Dispatch From Wed Mar 29, 2023

Cannondale Topstone LAB71 Frameset Drops 160 Grams with 30mm Suspension

Author Photo

The all-new 2023 Rocky Mountain Solo carbon features a fully redesigned frame, clearance for 29 x 2.0” or 27.5 x 2.2″ tires, and more gear mounting points than ever. Plus, Rocky rolled out two redevamped alloy models alongside the new carbon version. Check it out here…

The Solo is Rocky Mountain’s only drop-bar bike, sitting within their off-road focused mountain bike range. Although it’s a bit of an outlier in their lineup, it naturally fills the gap between a skinny-tired road bike and knobby-tired MTB, which seems fitting for a brand like Rocky Mountain. We spent some time on the 2019 Rocky Mountain Solo and found it to be fast and stable on gravel, and it offered lots of value for anyone on the hunt for a capable all-road drop-bar bike.

We’re excited to see a completely redesigned Rocky Mountain Solo for 2023 and beyond. While the overall concept remains the same, the Solo is now offered with a carbon frame for the first time. The geometry on the 2023 Rocky Mountain Solo carbon and alloy frames stayed relatively consistent with past models, although there were a few size-specific tweaks and the overall reach on all sizes got a little longer.

2023 Rocky Mountain Solo Carbon Geometry

The biggest change to the design of the Solo is that it now has clearance for 29 x 2.0” or 27.5 x 2.2” tires. The frame also gets internal cable routing, dropper post routing, the ability to run 1x and 2x drivetrains, and a boatload of gear mounts, including 12 on the frame and eight on the fork. The latest Solo has is offered in three complete carbon builds and two alloy models, catering to different budgets and requirements. Find all the details below.

Freaking Stoked!!!

I switched to this bike specifically for bike touring. This beaut has bosses EVERYWHERE! I can mount racks and bags literally everywhere on here. Most racks for the back also work. The bars a little thicker than some after market ones which makes them much more comfortable than some of the people I ride with's bars. The electronic shifting has been a game changer and makes it so running a small bar bag is more feasible because you tap the shifter instead of pushing it all the way inward. I have done some bike tours on it and some massive mixed route rides and this bike has been awesome. I left everything stock except took the tubes out and added some sealant - they were tubeless ready. I highly recommend this bike for any and all gravel/road/bike touring needs.

For sizing reference I am 5'3" with an inseam of 29". I was very worried about the stand over on this but it fits like a glove. Stoked to be on it and can't wait for some more gravel adventures.

  • Five sizes (XS-XL) fit riders from 5’0” to 6’6”.
  • One reviewer lauds the “excellent” stiffness-to-weight ratio of the Smoothwall carbon frame.
  • The Solo has generous mounting options, including 12 on the frame and eight on the fork.
  • The frame is equipped with down tube protection.
  • The Solo has clearance for 27.5” x 2.25” and 29” x 2.1” tires. With fenders, the clearance is 700c x 40mm or 27.5” x 2.2”.
  • A reviewer enjoys the vibration-damping characteristics of the carbon frame.
  • One expert praises the bike’s stability on descents.
  • The Solo is dropper post-compatible and can run 1x or 2x drivetrains.
  • SRAM’s standardized components make upgrades easier.
  • The aluminum frame and seatpost are surprisingly comfortable, say testers.
  • An expert relishes the performance on “playful singletrack with lots of changes of direction.”
  • The carbon Solo’s “responsiveness” and quick acceleration impress during testing.
  • A tester of the C70 and A50 highlights the “comparable handling characteristics” of both frames, with the differences a matter of “taste and budget.”

6 reasons not to buy

  • Reviewers bemoan the stiff Rocky Mountain handlebars (A30, A50, C50) and thin bar tape.
  • Two testers feel the 11-speed drivetrain (A30, A50, C50) isn’t ideal for steep climbs with gear.
  • The WTB Venture TCS tires (carbon builds) “roll loudly” and aren’t “efficient,” complains one reviewer. Another says the hard rubber “penalizes grip.”
  • One expert feels the “narrow” stock tires (40mm, 38mm) don’t fit the Solo’s long-distance gravel and bikepacking character.
  • A tester finds the WTB ST i23 wheelset (A30, A50, C50) to be “quite heavy” at almost 4.5lb.
  • A reviewer reports pedal strikes while descending due to the low bottom bracket.

Bottom line

Expert reviews, rocky mountain solo c70 review: new carbon gravel bike in downcountry style [german video].

Like the new aluminum model… it has plenty of tire clearance and attachment options suitable for bikepacking. The sitting position is just as comfortable as the riding comfort, making the bike more tailored to off-road adventures than gravel racing.

Rocky Mountain Solo 2023 Review

To sum up: the Rocky Mountain Solo Carbon 50 test bike offers solid equipment without a lot of frills and without electronic components. A well-rounded product with proven technology.

Rocky Mountain Solo Gravel Bike Test [German]

The price is high for the features, as usual, from the Canadian cult brand. But the frameset makes it easy to cope with if you have the right riding preferences.

Test | Rocky Mountain Solo C50: The Express Adventure [French]

With an upgrade to the wheels and tires, it should satisfy long-distance enthusiasts looking for a bike that is both fast and fun to ride on singletrack.

Test: Rocky Mountain Solo Carbon 70 [German]

The carbon seatpost offers good suspension and fits in perfectly with the Solo’s authoritative character; the somewhat skinny, rather hard aluminum handlebars less so. A multitude of mounting points for equipment and accessories will delight bikepackers and commuters.

The Double Solo: Rocky’s Gravel Bikes Test [German]

The [C70] Rocky Mountain Solo is very comfortable to ride thanks to the flex of the rear triangle and fork. Many mounting points make it a bikepacking gravel bike for long distances or long hours in the saddle. The Solo A50 aluminum model doesn’t come close to the comfort level, but it does effectively shield against vibrations.

Honestly, it was the best tour I've ever done! I was so lucky with the group I had, and the tour guide - Dayton - was so fun as well. The only downside was that it ended. 100% recommend!

Rockies Premium Tour from Vancouver (34 Seats)

This was an excellent trip and an amazing experience. The tour was incredibly well organized and our guides Will and Simon did a fantastic job throughout the week. Over the five days we got to see some truly beautiful sites throughout the Rockies and learn a lot about the stories and the history behind them. Even during the times where we were only driving, our tour guide Will provided us with many insights on the views around us. We got to learn about the mountains and lakes we passed by, as well as the ones we visited. Our accommodations were all very nice and conformable and the drives from place to place were beautiful sights on every road. Not only was our guide Will and excellent driver, he also would make sure to stop and slow down when someone spotted wildlife so everyone can see. Simon was a great co-pilot and always made sure to go through the bus to make sure everyone was comfortable during the long drives. Each hotel we stayed at was cozy and safe, with great locations. Both Will and Simon were very personable and kind men who were always interested in getting to know every person on this trip and ensuring they were having a good time. They both made it very easy to loosen up and get to know the other people around us, making new friends and having great experiences. Overall I had the best time on this trip, would definitely recommend and hope to go on another in the future.

Canada's Rockies (Base, 8 Days)

As fortune had it, when we did the Majesty of the Rockies tour, we had the best tour director, Ben Hutchinson, that anyone could hope for. He obviously has a passion for his work in this role as well as a love of his country that translated into every moment we were on tour with him. His geographical, historical and anthropological knowledge combined with a fantastic sense of humour made this the best trip I have ever been on. He was the icing on the cake of this magnificent scenery and it added an extra dimension to this trip that will stay in my memory for ever.

Canadian Rockies Express Tour

Canadian Rockies Express

Itinerary was great, scenery was beautiful, and our guide was fun. I was the only male in the group with my wife and 11 other females and it worked out fine. Everyone was very congenial, and the diversity of the group added to the experience. Only thing I would change would be the accommodations in Vancouver. While the hotel was fine it was very far from the downtown and sights, so we spent most of our time the last day in the van in traffic. Overall, it was a fantastic trip.

Via Railway Experience|5-Day Vancouver to Rockies Railway Full Experience Tour Departure

We enjoyed our tour very much, the sights were beautiful, staff we well informed. A highlight for us was the optional evening photographic tour. The only thing stopping me from giving five stars was the last day felt very rushed, especially at the Banff gondola as the queue to get on took half an hour and not enough time allocated to our lunch at the Lake Louise Chateau, we had to ask the waitress to bring out the dessert while we were eating the main as we only had 15 minutes until the bus left. Allocate a bit more time for those things and you will get five stars.

This trip was the best experience of my life so far! My CEO Melanie was so amazing, I felt so at ease and happy throughout every step of the tour. This is the perfect trip to see some of Canada. 100000/10 would recommend to everyone!
I have a great time! Ben is our tour guide, he’s such a great fun, knowledgeable, friendly person. He made sure everyone comfortable, safe, and ready to answer any questions we have during the tour. I did group tour before, I can tell Ben is one of the best.

Moscow always captivate me with its beautiful buildings! I really would like to visit it and maybe stay there for couple of weeks. Anyone knows if it's safe for solo female traveller? Is the Metro safe at night? Is the Kremlin area safe to walk around alone? Is 1 week enough to go around Moscow and St. Petersburg? Thanks!^^

Might be better to also ask in the Moscow forum.

Also check visa requirements and limitations. They can be challenging.

If you do go, both cities have Global Greeters programs. You need to arrange there a few weeks before travel, but planning this soon after arrival should give you an idea of the city and at least one other person you will know.
