Róisín Murphy Announces DJ Koze–Produced Album Hit Parade and Tour, Shares New Song: Listen

By Evan Minsker and Jazz Monroe

Róisín Murphy

Róisín Murphy has announced a new album, Hit Parade , produced by DJ Koze . It’s out September 8 via Ninja Tune . Listen to new song “ The Universe ” below and check out a batch of tour dates including headline shows in New York and Los Angeles. The single follows “ CooCool ” and the limited-release single “ Can’t Replicate (12" Edit) .”

Of the collaboration, Murphy said in a press release:

We worked remotely, in different countries sending tracks/ideas back and forth for several years. I always have to approach a new collaboration with openness and a willingness to learn and never more so than with this. The studio in this case was imaginary, in the airspace between Hamburg and London. That meant we were both in a personal, private place when working on the songs. For me that brought out a more intimate approach to the songwriting, I told this album my secrets. For Koze it meant total freedom and absolute focus without the distraction of my presence. He too took a deep dive into himself and I believe that’s why the music is so vibrant and alive. It is just exploding with colour!

The Hit Parade artwork was made by Beth Frey with graphic design by Bráulio Amado . It was commissioned by creative studio Object & Animal .

Murphy’s last album was 2020’s Róisín Machine . A remix album called Crooked Machine followed in 2021. Read Pitchfork’s features “ Róisín Murphy on the Music That Made Her ” and “ The 2020 Club Bangers That Could Have Been ,” featuring an interview with Murphy, along with “ 72 Hours in Paradise With DJ Koze, Electronic Music’s Trickster Genius .”

‘The allure of self-sabotage’ … Róisín Murphy.

Róisín Murphy: Hit Parade review – a masterful album with an ugly stain

(Ninja Tune) To DJ Koze’s warped soul and dub techno, Murphy examines unrequited love and the ecstasy of being seen for who you are – a theme that jars with her recent comments about trans kids

E ven before the events of the last fortnight, Róisín Murphy ’s sixth album teetered on the edge of danger. Preoccupied with unrequited desire, Hit Parade lurches recklessly between soulful rhapsodies about getting what you want and shadowy techno tracing the allure of self-sabotage, and innately understands that these apparently conflicting states are two sides of exactly the same coin. They’re united further by Murphy’s cosmic worldview, which perceives desire as a kind of fate, and the playfulness of producer DJ Koze , AKA Stefan Kozalla, who lavishes the record with iridescent detail, as if zooming in on dew drops in the fur of a golden labrador or delighting in the twitching aliveness of a luscious jungle.

Hit Parade has been a very long time coming: it was made over six years, mostly remotely, and finished two years ago. Murphy has said that she would send her parts to the German producer, who would twist them to his whimsical but perfectionist ear, often sending back total surprise reinventions of songs they had already worked on intensively: flipping country soul to skeletal post-dubstep, unexpectedly splicing in voicemails from Murphy and clips from her goofy in-character bits on TikTok. In every sense, textual and meta, Hit Parade considers what the truest expression of a feeling might be.

The artwork for Hit Parade

In the last two weeks, the sincerity of that expression has become compromised for many fans. A screenshot of Murphy decrying puberty blockers as “big pharma laughing all the way to the bank”, expressing concern about “mixed-up kids” and characterising “Terf” as a misogynist slur in a Facebook comment was circulated online. (A US study which followed 104 trans and non-binary youth over 12 months at a gender clinic found that those who received puberty blockers, gender-affirming hormones or both had 60% lower odds of depression and 73% lower odds of self-harm or suicidal thoughts. Puberty blockers have also long been used to stall precocious puberty in cisgender children. As of June, the NHS has paused their availability to young people outside exceptional circumstances and for research studies.) Murphy’s comments dismayed many within her vast LGBTQ+ fanbase, who she has embraced by performing at queer events such as Homobloc, NYC Downlow and Mighty Hoopla and aligning herself with drag culture. When she finally commented a week later , notably she didn’t apologise for her original assertion, only the division she had sowed, and claimed she had never targeted any particular demographic. (Also perhaps telling: Murphy has been her own manager for more than two years.) Naturally, the division only worsened, with some fans who felt betrayed cancelling their album preorders. Other supportive fans, and those with an interest in amplifying Murphy’s original views, as well as anti-cancel culture bandwagoners, made the hashtag #IStandWithRoisinMurphy trend on Twitter.

Ninja Tune ceased promoting the record and according to one newspaper report , will donate all profits from its sale to charities that work to combat transphobia. (The label declined multiple requests to confirm this to the Guardian, and has not released a statement on the matter.) It is an ignominious ending for one of the year’s most anticipated albums, one that was already being talked about in rarefied terms by critics – part of the tiny, privileged industry contingent who were able to cultivate a relationship with Hit Parade free from this association. I first heard it in February and had been playing it obsessively all year, which makes writing this review a challenge on several levels: what I hear will never be what the general public hears now that the album is emerging into the world as a kind of collateral damage. I totally disagree with Murphy’s views and understand why for many fans, particularly queer fans, this album is DOA, yet it would be a reach to frame Hit Parade through those comments – save, perhaps, for how they jar against her lyrical theme of how delirious it feels to be seen for who you truly are, to reveal your truest self to another person, a desire any of her queer and trans listeners would know intimately. You’d have to hope that Murphy considers that a universal pleasure, given how sublimely she and Koze render it on a really masterful album.

Partially that’s down to Koze’s gorgeously warped lens: Hit Parade constitutes his best ever full-length LP. His humour is there, in the teeth-brushing samples that pan through the soulful rush of CooCool; in his fearless embrace of cheese in Free Will, which starts with a philosophical statement about autonomy that brings to mind his classic XTC , and shifts from beatific lounge to what could be the theme tune to a Balearic soap opera then to twinkling house. The detail is immaculate, an endlessly renewing seam of novelty and delight imbued in the very fabric of every song: the sort of piercing white light that surreptitiously sears through the pixellated blasts of Two Ways; the way the strings that end the juddering, recriminatory Hurtz So Bad seem played less by a bow than a fader; how the balmy, squirmy guitar and synth noodling away at the end of a song actually called Fader feel as if they’ve gone threadbare with love. Koze is clearly a guy who plays with his food, and he scales and squeezes these songs in a way that makes them as unpredictable as the desire Murphy is hounding down within them. “He plays me like a geeee-tar,” she sings on Hurtz So Bad, and Koze constricts her voice to a tense, frenzied vibration.

after newsletter promotion

The sublimity is also unmistakably down to Murphy’s painfully accurate reflection of the phantom intimacy that is unrequited or even forbidden infatuation: the power and powerlessness, the whiplash of obsession and rejection. Hit Parade starts with a dare, the dripping, dubbed-out shudder of What Not to Do, in which Murphy posits: “Whether you want it / Or you don’t / Whether we get on it / Or we don’t”, her voice a slackened, licentious sneer. Her proposition turns to delusion, convinced that only this other person could ever know her on the breathless, writhing techno of Can’t Replicate, one of the more straightforward songs here; imagining their union as something written in the stars in CooCool and The Universe.

And Murphy puts in the headiest performance of her life, revealing dimensions far beyond the stentorian disco maven of 2020’s Róisín Machine : she is ecstatically available on Fader as she admits “I lay eggs every single time I think of you”, harsh with self-loathing on Hurtz So Bad, a panicked blurt on The House, a doomed portrait of intimacy. There’s startling acceptance on the twinkling scrape of Eureka, about begging a doctor to cut this pain out of her; the sharpest bitterness on You Knew, a masterpiece of arid, throbbing, angry, forlorn dub-techno in which Murphy castigates the object of her desires for misleading her.

Her recriminations spill out in fast flurries, the speed eventually breaking them apart, like bits of a rocket falling off as it penetrates the atmosphere; Koze bounces her voice like a ball, letting it skid and skitter. The song is a cold burn, the anguished realisation that you’ve imagined yourself into a fantasy so intensely that you feel cheated of a reality that you never had in the first place. That sense of shattered illusions hits especially hard this week.

This article was amended on 8 September 2023 to better reflect the content and impact of Róisín Murphy’s Facebook comment. It was also amended to give more detail and context in relation to a scientific study and to clarify the findings.

Banging sounds of the summer: as chosen by Arlo Parks, Romy, Róisín Murphy and more

D o not be fooled by the persistent drizzle, summer is on its way! But which quintessential banger will become the unofficial song of the season?

From Daft Punk’s now-immortal 2013 funk hit Get Lucky - arguably a staple of the genre - to the Lionesses’ glorious revival of Gala Rizzatto’s Freed From Desire at last year’s Euros, every year has a flagship song. As 2023 hots up — we hope — we’ve quizzed some of music’s finest on the tracks they’ll be rinsing this summer.

Boygenius - True Blue

‘For me, summer is bursting with colour. It’s picnics and open-water swimming, and feeling free. This song is so tender, and there’s so much loving detail in there, but also this distinct sense of melancholy. I remember playing it while I was driving, and heading towards my favourite beach in the world, with my best friends. My dog was hanging her head out of the window, safely! We were going at 70mph, and feeling like the world was completely new.’

Arlo Parks’ new single Pegasus ft. Phoebe Bridgers is out now

The Blessed Madonna

Haai - always ascending.

‘My song of the summer is Always Ascending by HAAi. It’s got production from Jon Hopkins and vocals from Kam Bu, who I have had the pleasure of being in a session with. It’s a really exciting record, which isn’t technically out yet; it’s the follow up to the lead single from her very exceptionally good 2022 album called Baby, We’re Ascending, and I can’t wait to play this one on tour this summer! Teneil Throssell remains endlessly impressive and brilliant.’

The Blessed Madonna plays Parklife festival June 11

yuné pinku - Night Light

‘A summer anthem needs to have a euphoria in it: for me, it needs to have momentum, and a driving rhythm. Night Light, by yuné pinku, has just got this lightness and warmth. I can imagine having it on when I’ve got friends around, in the garden, in the summer – the weather is still not very nice right now, but it transported me to the place that I hope I’ll be in soon. It’s a great track I found on one of my Spotify deep-dives, and I’m excited to hear more from them, to be honest.’

Romy’s new single Enjoy Your Life is out now

Hot Chip, Joe Goddard

Kaytraminé - 4eva (feat. pharrell williams).

‘This song is super funky, infectious, and bouncy. Amine sounds a little like Q-Tip, and his verses have some killer hooks. Kaytranada’s drums sound almost Brazilian and have a great swing to them – it will be a summer anthem. It has the perfect tempo and a simple chorus from Pharrell to top it off.’

Hot Chip are DJing All Night Long at Koko on 9 June and headlining London’s Kaleidoscope festival on 15 July

Róisín Murphy

Eli escobar - do it now.

‘If you’re looking for a nice warm summer vibe, this really isn’t that. It’s dark and sexual and intense, with a threatening edge. Still, I think it might fit this coming summer quite well, as I have a feeling it might get quite heated and fractious!  Eli Escobar is perfectly capable of  beautifully warm and dreamy, summer vibes – as evidenced elsewhere in his excellent catalogue – although it’s always rooted in his New York heritage. Here it’s a kind of edgy, funky-electro, downtown-scene he’s tapping. Real summer anthems need to be able to go big or go small. This will work at a rave, or at a barbeque, in the car, or on a run… anywhere! But it’s not escapism. You’ll have to go to Thomas Cook for that!’

Roisin Murphy plays the Mighty Hoopla on June 4

Mimi Webb - Red Flags

‘My summer banger of 2023 is Red Flags by Mimi Webb. What can I say; I’m a pop addict and this one’s super-hooky, with a big uptempo chorus. Lyrically, it’s a song that myself and many others can definitely connect with – there’s something inevitable about the heartbreak that follows when you ignore all the warning signs.’

Dagny plays the Mighty Hoopla on June 4

Blawan - Toast

‘For us, Blawan’s latest single Toast is undoubtedly the sound of the summer. Jamie Roberts (aka Blawan) is a really talented producer, who we were lucky enough to have feature on our 2021 fabric presents compilation. He has this incredible way of making music that melts over you. Toast – off new EP Dismantled Into Juice – is a perfect example of this. It has these crisp synths that got us hooked from the first listen. They float in like a cool breeze, which is just what everyone needs in the warmer months.’

Overmono’s debut album Good Lies is out now - they play Gala Festival on May 27

SZA - Kill Bill Ft. Doja Cat (Remix)

‘SZA is such an amazing vocalist with a very unique tone and we love how she contrasts the sweet melodies in Kill Bill against the concept of the song itself. It’s an undeniable ear-worm, and we always find ourselves singing the chorus over and over. Doja Cat being involved in this new version was the cherry on top. We’re huge fans of her style and approach, and have always wanted to tour or work with her in some way.’

Nova Twins play Download festival, 8-11 June

Tom Rasmussen

Róisín murphy - coocool.

‘The sound of the summer is obviously CooCool by the mother of music with actual taste Róisín Murphy. With whom I’ll be playing two (yes two!) festivals this year (she doesn’t know who I am). But I know who she is – and no matter what sound she brings, it seems to usher in a new way to experience the summer. If her 2020 album Róisín Machine was a dark and sexy dance party, perfect for the crowds of gays at Glastonbury’s flawless NYC Downlow club, comeback CooCool is a chic, cliff-side relaxation, in white dresses with a marabou trim. I can’t wait to dance to it at Mighty Hoopla.’

Tom Rasmussen plays the Mighty Hoopla on June 4

Nell Mescal

The japanese house - boyhood.

‘This song is 1000 per cent a summer banger. The melodies are so insane, the build-up is so great, and the chorus makes me want to run around a field in the sun. Except I’m also feeling existential, because the lyric: “and if I grow, I’m gonna get so old” makes me want to scream. That’s what makes it a perfect summer song, though I’d also give an honourable mention to Caroline Polachek’s Welcome To My Island. The Charli XCX remix, because obviously.’

Nell Mescal plays BST Hyde Park on June 25

Lambrini Girls, Phoebe Lunny

Comfort - billionaire potential.

‘I really wanted to pick Crazy Frog by Axel F – Crazy Frog is a gay icon, and a sign of the times. He’s a bit of all of us. In terms of stuff I’ve heard this year, though, I love Billionaire Potential by Glaswegian band Comfort. They’re so unapologetically queer, and fantastic – we played a couple of shows with them and they just blew me away. I’d say Billionaire Potential is about capitalism, and about how awful society is, and the way that we all navigate that. It resonates with me a lot. It’s flawless!’

Lambrini Girls play Brighton’s The Great Escape this weekend

Black Honey, Izzy Bee Phillips

Lambrini girls - lads lads lads.

‘We played the same festival as [Lambrini Girls] last week, Are You Listening in Reading, and I felt like I needed their music in my life. I love punk, and I love bands like Amyl and the Sniffers... but their sound is more vintage and looking at things through an Australian lens. This is so applicable to British girl culture. It’s really refreshing. Lads Lads Lads in particular is a hilarious song because it’s got this cock-rock style riff, and is also this very accurate critique of lad culture.’

Black Honey play 2000trees festival, 5-8 July

Shygirl - Heaven ft. Tinashe

The radio is so powerful, especially in summer, and there’s a big power in hearing songs on repeat. My summer anthem has to be Shygirl’s Heaven, featuring Tinashe. It’s from her remix album, Nymph_o, which I’ve been listening to a lot. I rate her so much - she’s very impressive, and I supported her at her Printworks show. I fell in love with that song when I heard her play it live. For me, it’s got this perfect balance between being electronic and almost classical, with these beautiful string arrangements.

Rose Gray plays The Great Escape this weekend

Confidence Man

Robert doherty & foley - let the bass.

This is cheeky, fun and has a breakdown worthy of a big ol’ baseball stadium. We’ve been putting it in our DJ sets the last few weeks, and it always pops off without us even trying. It’s a sure fire way to achieve party success and look cool while doing it. Big and trashy is back!

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
