During the year 1570, Philip II, due to his sympathy and fondness for horses, decided to create the building project where he considered the Spanish thoroughbred colts would be developed, providing the construction of the Royal Stables in the Solars of Alcazar.

The king found an ideal place for the breeding of pure horses that were at the exclusive service of the monarchy, giving rise through genetic crossings to the breed that is currently known as the Andalusian horse or spanish thoroughbred. It is one of the monuments that attracts visitors most to the city, giving it renown and cultural prestige to Cordoba, favoring the economy by the full functioning of the building, receiving numerous tourists during the different seasons of the year.

He was the person who advised that he solard next to the Alcazar was a perfect place to execute this work, there were the ancient caliphate stables, a space that in the time of Al Haq II housed numerous Arabian horses.

Don Diego was the man in charge of making The dream of Felipe II come true to create the Spanish horse or Andalusian, thus showing the greatness of the empire for the time.

In 1578, the date of the construction of the stables, some 1200 mares arrived in Cordoba that lived with their necessary offspring, foals and stallions, creating a new breed of horses according to what the King of Spain wanted.

This building was razed by a fire in 1757, being completely restored in just three years by express order of Charles III, providing it with new stables, patio, oratory, several offices and other rooms.

The stables belonged to the crown until 1866 when they became the state, currently there is a project to be part of the municipality.

Royal Stables

Royal Stables

The Royal Stables of Córdoba were founded in 1570 by royal decree of Philip II, who loved horses and wanted to create one of the finest breeds the world had ever seen: the Pure Spanish Thoroughbred Andalusian Horse.

What was at first simply a royal wish ended up becoming one of Philip II’s grandest and dearest projects. The Pure Spanish Thoroughbred was a very popular riding horse and soon became a striking symbol of the Spanish Empire.

Now, these horses return to their origins and birthplace, the city of Córdoba, with the equestrian show "Passion and Spirit of the Andalusian Horse". A real delight for the whole family in the stunning setting of the monumental Royal Stables of Córdoba .

Every two years since 2004, the Municipal Tourism Board of Córdoba has been hosting a tourism gala to award prizes and distinctions to individuals, companies and organisations that promote the city's tourist attractions with a view to making Córdoba a leading destination.

At the Fifth Gala Tourism held on 27 September 2012, the equestrian show "Passion and Spirit of the Andalusian Horse" won the best tourism product award.

Royal Stables

The  Royal Stables  of  Córdoba  were declared  National Historical Monument  in 1929, and they started to be part of the  National Heritage . They were founded through a decree by King Felipe II (1556-1598) in 1570, with the objectve of breeding Spanish thoroughbred horses, at the service of the Spanish Monarchy. For this reason, the Andalusian horse is considered the Spanish horse par excellence. The building works were commissioned to the Master of the King’s Horse, Diego López de Haro y Sotomayor, Beatriz de Sotomayor’s grandson, Marchiones of Carpio, and Diego López de Haro, a gentleman from Castilla.

Diego chose as a location for the  stables , following his criterion or with the Monarch’s opinion, the  neighbourhood of San Basilio , next to the old area of the  Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs , which was built over the old Caliphal  stables , going on until the bank of the river Guadalquivir and which had more than two thousand horses during Al-Hakam I’s mandate.

The mares were placed in the meadows and lands of “ Córdoba la Vieja ” (The old Córdoba), “Alameda del Obispo”, “Dehesa de la Rivera”, “Gamonosas”, “La Pendolilla” and “Cortijo el Alcaide”, among other areas. This way, after more than thirty years of dedication, Diego, who was also  councilor  of the city of  Córdoba  and marquis of Carpio since 1580, wrote these words to the king: “ the kindness of the horses in Córdoba is the greatest thing His Majesty has in the world “.

However, in the 18th century, a fire completely destroyed the  stables . Therefore, years later, Monarch Carlos III (1759-1788) ordered its reconstruction. They belonged to the Crown until the mandate of Fernando VII (1808-1833), after which they belonged to the State. In this sense, we can highlight the work carried out by the Spanish Army, as since 1866 they were in charge of continuing the tradition of breeding horses. Until 1995 the building of the  stables  belonged to the Ministry of Defence, when the Army’s Deposit of Studs was transferred to Écija. In 1996 the Subdelegation of Defence in Córdoba was moved there, until in 2002, the ownership of the building was given to the City Council.

The  Royal Stables  are an attractive rectangular building with broad vaulted rooms which worked as stables. Its wide central courtyard distributes the different rooms, among which we can highlight stable number I, as it keeps its old appearance. The ground floor of the building of the stables is one of the main elements in the  Royal Stables . The main stable has a groin vault supported by sandstone columns that separate and demarcate the different stables or stalls. Other interesting elements are the Riding School, the Tower of the Wall, as well as the free space of the gardens.

The historical building has been the headquarters of the Regional Secretary for South-Mediterranean Europe of the Organization for the World Heritage Cities. At the beginning of 2006 the Cavalry Section of the Local Police was transferred there. Until recently, the first floor had the administrative offices of the  Tourism Consortium of Córdoba  and the  Department of Tourism and World Heritage of the City Council . Likewise, it is also the headquarters for institutions like  Córdoba ecuestre  (Equestrian Córdoba),  Córdoba Convention Bureau  and  Córdoba Film Office  until March 2008. There is also an office belonging to Denominación de Origen Montilla Moriles (Certificate of Origin of the wine Montila Moriles).

If you are wondering  what to do in Córdoba , we recommend you visit the  Royal Stables  hiring one of our  guided tours . Choose to do high  quality sightseeing  with qualified staff. Do not hesitate,  ArtenCórdoba  is the best option.

ROYAL STABLES

Chronology . Century XVI

Style. Renaissance

Author. Ordered by Felipe II

Description.  The Royal Horse Riders of Cordoba are the building of reference in managing one of the most famous races that history has had: The Andalusian Horse, our Spanish Pure Breed. This emblematic building was created in 1570, by express mandate of King Philip II who, as a great lover of horses, wanted to create in Cordoba a new breed of horses, the Andalusian Horse - Pura Raza Español. In order to do this, he appointed a royal stagger to the Cordovan Diego Lopez de Haro, he pointed out the pastures necessary for the grazing of the foals and the mares and ordered to build the extraordinary Royal Horse Stables, the "cathedral for horses", as the poet Federico García Lorca. This monumental building, which is National Heritage, was vital so that the enclosure in which it is framed, next to the Mosque-Cathedral and the Judería has been considered by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. The purpose of the place is to shelter the best stallions for 442 years uninterrupted. It is worth mentioning the achievement achieved among its walls: the Andalusian Horse - Pura Raza Español -, which with its qualities made the city of Cordoba known worldwide as the World Center for Breeding Caballar. It is a visitable space that complements the tourist offer of the city and that dynamizes and favors the economic development around the world of the horse, conforming it as a tourist product of quality.

The mosque-cathedral of Cordoba (also sometimes called Mezquita ) is the city’s emblematic monument and certainly the most impressive.

Built in 785 by a Muslim emir on the ruins of a church, it has been enlarged and embellished over several centuries. Nowadays, it’s considered one of the most beautiful examples of Islamic art in Spain.

Following the Christian conquest, a cathedral was erected at its center, creating a singular architectural mix. Inside you can admire columns and endless red and white arcades, glorified by the beautiful lighting.

Spending an hour or two photographing the columns from every angle is the dream of every photographer.

This is one of the most impressive monuments I’ve had the opportunity to see, the atmosphere is really special there. You will love it!

All the important information you need to visit the Mosque Cathedral of Cordoba can be found on the Mezquita’s official website.

  • Buy your tickets at the vending machines, to avoid the big waiting lines. They are located right next to the ticket booth.
  • If you know the exact date of your trip to Córdoba, you can buy your tickets in advance here . They also include an amazing guided visit of the mosque-cathedral.
  • Visit the Mezquita around 12:45 there are a lot less people and you can take beautiful pictures of the arcades without anyone around.
  • It is also possible to climb the minaret of the Mezquita for 2€

And last but not least, here is a great tip to save money:

If you plan to visit Cordoba’s 3 main monuments (the Mosque-Cathedral, the Alcazar and the Synagogue) in one day, the best is to book a guided tour of the 3.

Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba

This is the other must-see monument when visiting Cordoba: the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos (“Alcázar of the Christian Kings” in English) . It served as a residence for Catholic kings, but was also the headquarter of the Holy Office during the inquisition. At that time, it was converted to a prison.

You can start your visit by climbing into one of the Alcázar’s 4 towers. You will end up on the ramparts, with a unique panorama of the city to enjoy.

Then go back downstairs to visit the interior of the Alcázar of Cordoba, with its mosaic salon, the royal baths and the moorish patio. You can then enjoy the highlight of the visit, the beautiful gardens. Large paths lined with trees and orange trees with beautiful fountains and ponds in the center.

Visiting the gardens is truly relaxing and refreshing, the perfect opportunity to have a break in the shade and quiet.

For only 4.50 €, the visit is really worth it. And if you want additionnal historical information during your visit, I highly recommend you to book a guided tour by clicking here (the guides are really good). The Alcazar of the Christian King is a must-do, very relaxing after a day of visit in Cordoba!

Alcazar of Cordoba

Located in the Jewish quarter, it’s the only existing synagogue in Andalusia and the third best preserved in Spain. Although small, it’s worth a visit especially for the nice stucco decorations of the main hall.

Until the expulsion of the Jews,  Cordoba Synagogue served as a temple. Later, it has been used as a hospital and school before being recognized as a national monument in the 19th century.

Cordoba Synagogue

Very close to the synagogue, you can find the chapel of San Bartolomé. This chapel is a perfect example of Mudéjar art and architecture. Located inside the Faculty of Arts, it was built in the 14th century. Inside, you can admire its unique nave with a ribbed vault and walls decorated with earthenware tiles.

On a piece of land belonging to the Alcázar, you can find the royal stables of Cordoba (las caballerizas reales in Spanish) founded in 1570 by King Felipe II, a horse lover.

You may not know it, the famous race of Andalusian horses was created here. The stables can be visited and you can also attend a horse show, held every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday for about 15 euros.

Royal Stables of Córdoba

The bridge gate is as its name suggests, located just opposite the Roman bridge of Córdoba. It was built in the 16th century on the site of ancient Roman and Moorish gates. Pretty aesthetic, I must say!

Bridge Gate Cordoba

Now let’s head to the Roman Bridge, another must-see monument in Cordoba, great for beautiful shots of the old city, especially at sunset. The complex formed by the bridge over the Guadalquivir river and the view of the mosque-cathedral is one of the most beautiful views of the city.

Built in the 1st century BC, it was the only bridge in the city for nearly 20 centuries and the main access to Cordoba.

Crossing the bridge will take you directly to the Calahorra Tower.

Roman Bridge Cordoba

At the end of the Roman Bridge ,  you will find a defensive tower from the Muslim era: the Calahorra Tower

Declared as a national historical monument, after serving as a school and prison, it now houses the museum of Al-Andalus. This museum is about the coexistence of Jews, Muslims and Christians, a topical theme. You can also see a model of the mosque and access the tower’s terrace to enjoy the view of the bridge and river.

Calahorra Tower

The plaza de las Tendillas is a very pleasant square, ideal for a break. Its water jets and fountain makes it even more enjoyable in Andalusia hot weather! I suggest you to extend this moment of relaxation in one of the many bars and restaurant terraces around. Don’t miss the magnificent buildings facades on the square.

If you’re staying 2 days in Cordoba , it’s also a good place to visit in the evening, when the fountains are illuminated and the Andalusian night life starts around tapas and sangria.

plaza de las tendillas

As it’s not far from the plaza de las tendillas, you should definitely go have a look at he the Roman temple of Cordoba. Located in front of the town hall, this temple impresses with its dimensions. The are no guided visits available, you can just see the columns from the street but since it is on the way between the two most famous squares of Cordoba, it is worth a brief visit.

The Roman Temple, in Cordoba

Your path will then take you straight to the most famous square in Cordoba: the Plaza de la Corredera (Corrodera Square) . Its rectangular shape and its arcades recall the classic “Plaza Mayor” of Castile but it’s actually the only square with such features in Andalusia. For centuries, it has been a gathering place for parties, markets, bullfights and even….executions!

Today it’s with the plaza de las Tendillas the best place in Cordoba to enjoy a drink or a lunch on a terrace. There is also a market, where you can buy fresh produce.

Corredera square Cordoba

As it’s located about ten minute walk from the plaza de la Corredera , you should continue your visit of Cordoba with a stop at the Viana Palace (“Palacio de Viana”). The highlights of the visit are for sure the 12 magnificient patios and gardens. Art enthusiasts will also be delighted by the impressive collection of paintings, ancient dishes and tapestries that can be found in the palace’s multiple outbuildings.

All information for your visit can be found on the Viana Palace official website.

One of the Viana Palace patio

If you have more than one day to visit the city, here is a list of museums in Cordoba that might interest you:

  • The archaeological museum and its collection of Roman objects discovered in Cordoba
  • The fine arts museum : collections of modern Spanish and baroque art
  • The bullfighting museum for those who are not opposed to this practice of course
  • The ethnobotanical museum and the botanical garden
  • The Julio Romero de Torrez museum, housing a collection of the famous local painter
  • The gallery of the inquisition which presents the instruments of torture used in the inquisition. It’s not recommended for children.

Cordoba archaeological museum

Finally, don’t leave Cordoba without tasting its typical dish: the salmorejo . It is a cold soup (perfect for the hot weather!) made of tomato, olive oil, bread crumbs, garlic, vinegar on which they put small pieces of Serrano ham and eggs.

And to finish with a sweet touch, why not give an ice cream a go? Personally, I have tried the one from Cremeria di Vaniglia , close to the plaza de las tendillas and they were amazing!

Madinat al-Zahra (Medina Azahara)

The remains of the mysterious city of Madinat al-Zahra (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) are located at 8 kilometers from Cordoba .

The this city was built by a caliph in tribute to his wife named “Azahara”. The palace was built with marble, gold and precious stones!

In addition to the palace, Madinat al-Zahra city consisted of 3 levels and there was also a mosque. Nowadays, it’s is in ruins but it’s a very interesting visit for history lovers!

The best way to enjoy the visit is for sure to book a guided tour from Cordoba.

Everything is included: transportation, the guide, and access to the historical site.

To book it, you just have to click on the button below:

Monastery of San Jerónimo de Valparaíso

In front of Madinat al-Zahra , you can find the impressive monastery of San Jerónimo de Valparaíso, built in the 15th century.

It was originally a Gothic building, but you can find some Renaissance and Baroque architecture elements.

For several years, the family of owners has done a great job of restoration and you can now admire a large art collection.

Be careful, visits are only private, so you need to make a reservation before going.

It’s totally possible to visit Cordoba in one day . Even without hurrying, you can see all of the most important attractions of the city.

  • Start by visiting the Jewish Quarter and its flowery streets
  • Then head to the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, a unique place in Andalusia
  • Lunch in a terrace at the Plaza de las Tendillas for example.
  • Then go to the Plaza de la Corredera. Along the way you can see the Roman Temple of Cordoba.
  • Walk along the Guadalquivir to get to the B ridge Gate and the Roman bridge of Cordoba
  • Cross the bridge, and arrive at the Calahorra Tower
  • Finally, end your day in town with a visit to the Alcázar of Cordoba and its magnificent gardens.

And if you don’t want to walk all day, you can opt for the Hop-on Hop-off tourist bus. It stops in from of every tourist attraction of the city!

You can click here to book it.

If you spend 2 days in Cordoba , you should do the program I recommended just above for the 1st day. However you can visit the Alcázar on the second day, in order to split the 2 longest visits.

  • Start the day at plaza de la Corredera for a coffee on the terrace.
  • Visit the Viana Palace and its 12 patios
  • Why not try the Salmorejo for lunch? (Followed by an ice cream of course!)
  • Visit one or more museums of Cordoba to choose from the list above. I personally recommend the museum of the inquisition
  • If you have a car, visit Madinat al-Zahra or  the monastery of San Jerónimo de Valparaíso

I loved the city of Cordoba , it’s easy to go over by foot and in one day in Cordoba, without much hurry, you can see all the must-see attractions of the city. As most alleyways and the historic centre are pedestrian only area, it’s very pleasant to walk around in complete safety, without noise.

The Mosque Cathedral of Cordoba  particularly impressed me, even if I had seen several pictures before entering it in real. I really had the impression to discover it for the first time, it’s hard to realize how amazing it is before going there!

The Alcázar of Cordoba gardens are also particularly beautiful and well put together. Everything is very geometric and graphic, I liked that, in addition to being able to enjoy a little shade and quietness!

Caballerizas Reales de Córdoba

Historic building in córdoba.

Passion And Spirit Of The Andalusian Horse At The Caballerizas Reales

The Caballerizas Reales de Córdoba or the Royal Stables of Córdoba  are a set of stables built in 1570 by order of the monarch Felipe II,  in Córdoba, Andalusia, in Spain. The aim of the stables was to the aim of raising purebred Spanish horses, the stables housed the best stallions and mares of the royal stud breed, which would become the origin of the ‘ Andalusian horse’ . The building is situated in the historic center and borders the Guadalquivir. The stables became part of the historic center of Cordoba and was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1994.

What does the Caballerizas Reales de Córdoba look like?

With respect to the architecture, the stable building is remarkable. It is divided into three naves with arcading, and the dressage arena, with iron structure from the 19th Century.

The  Royal Stables are an attractive rectangular building with broad vaulted rooms, almost cathedral-like in atmosphere. The stable area is massive with a long center hallway and horse stalls on either side. Its wide central courtyard distributes the different rooms.  Sandstone columns support a cross-vaulted ceiling and numerous, small windows light the space in addition to suspended lanterns.  A new stable houses the royal horses.

The main stable has a groin vault supported by sandstone columns that separate and demarcate the different stables or stalls. Other interesting elements are the Riding School, the Tower of the Wall, as well as the free space of the gardens.

Carriage Museum at the Caballerizas Reales de Córdoba

The carriage museum that is located in the the old stables just to the left of the ticket booth as you enter the grounds. The museum contains a wonderful collection of historic carriages dating back centuries with many elegant coaches and conveyances once used by the royals and other elites. The arched columns and vaulted ceiling add an architectural flair to what was the stables for the horses at one time. It won’t take long to tour the carriage house, perhaps 15 to 20 minutes, but it’s definitely worth seeing.

History of the Caballerizas Reales de Córdoba

These were founded in 1567 by Philip II with the intention of raising a purebred Spanish Horses for the services of the Royal Household. The Master of the Horse, D. Diego Lopez de Haro y Sotomayor, first marquis of El Carpio, was put in charge of the construction. The neighborhood of San Basilio was chosen as a location for the stables, next to the old area of the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs, which was built over the old Caliphal stables, going on until the bank of the river Guadalquivir and which had more than two thousand horses during Al-Hakam I’s reign. Joan de Midnjares directed the works that finished about 1590.

After a fire in 1757, they were reconstructed in Charles III (1759-1788) time. In 1822, the Royal Household’s horses were removed and the stables were turned over to the Cavalry. The Spanish Army stallion stable was here for many years until it was removed from Córdoba and the building was used by the Ministry of Defense. In 2002 it was bought by the Town Council and is used for offices and cultural events.

The Brand of Caballerizas Reales

The Brand of Caballerizas Reales was placed on horses that were produced in the Royal stables, and was the first bran used on the first horses of the now organised breed. The brand contained an “R” for  Real  (“royal”) inside a  C  for Córdoba with a  corona  (crown) on top of the  C ; the royal stamp was placed on horses produced in the Royal Stables, being the “first brand used on the first horses of the now organized breed”.

The Equestrian Show at the Caballerizas Reales

If you would like to see the Andalusian horses you can attend one of the nightly Equestrian Show that take place at the Royal Stables or you can watch the horses during their afternoon practice session.  The Equestrian Show is a tourist attraction and cultural event, which connects the town of Cordoba with its history and its equestrian tradition. The nightly show is called the ‘Pasion y Duende del Caballo Andaluz’ or ‘Passion and Spirit of the Andalusian Horse’ . Located at the Royal Horse Stables of Cordoba, this show starts at 9 pm and lasts approximately one hour. This event combines art on horseback, flamenco and dance, and three unique elements of the region.

Andalusian Horse

The breed is known worldwide as the Andalusian horse, and they were first recognized as a distinct breed as far back as the in the 15th century. However, their actual history goes back thousands of years on the Iberian Peninsula. Cave paintings in Spain have been found showing pictures of horses that date as far back as 30,000 BC. The breed is distinguished by their long thick mane and tail, as well as their elegant yet robust build. They can be found in many colours, however grey is the most common coat colour.

The horse carried the conquistadores to the New World and became a striking symbol of the Spanish empire. Its reputation as a prized war horses almost led to the demise of the breed in the Iberian Peninsula when Napoleon invaded Spain in the 1800’s and seized them for his own invasion. Luckily a small herd was sequestered at a monastery in Cartuja near Granada and the breed recovered.  It is also the preferred breed of nobility across Europe. Today, they can often be found performing around the world in many equestrian activities, including dressage and show jumping. Today the Andalusian horses number over 185,000.

I can understand why the people don’t allow photos even without using a flash. Read more Written March 4, 2023
  • dtye2017 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Beware when buying seats online Beware of buying tickets online via cordobaequestre.com. We paid for premium seats, 4 in a row. Picked these seats from the map provided. The seats were nowhere near where the map shows and the “real” premium were in a completely different section. They weren’t even 4 in a row but 2 and 2. The show itself was impressive and fun to watch. Beautiful, strong, hard working horses that I hope are well treated and cared for. Read more Written January 4, 2023

  • Harry1Melbourne 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Horrible to witness the cruelty I was horrified to see how these horses are treated, in particular when they are “whipped’ on their hind quarters to make them rear up. Most of the horses looked frightened, they come close enough to see their eyes, and they were frothing at the mouth. The use of spurs also horrified me, I didn’t thing they were still allowed. I would have walked out if possible. Some of the scenes with the flamenco dancers were better. Makes me wonder how they are treated outside the arena. I would advise against attending. • LauryGlas 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointed I was excited about attending the show but came away feeling disappointed. I’m not sure about the treatment of these horses. Several of the riders used their spurs relentlessly on the horses and I witnessed one of the horses bleeding near hind quarters. There were times the riders were rough on the horses mouths. I wonder about how they are cared for outside of shows. Are they in stalls all day? They are beautiful animals and none of them are skinny, their coats are shiny and they appear well taken care of to look at. I’m not sure the horses love it as stated. • xanapeq 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Visit to the stables (only) - poor and misleading I have not written a review in some time but I though this needed to be written to inform other travelers, in particular horse-loving ones, as they will surely seek out this location. Cordoba Ecuestre refers to the visit that takes place in the royal stables in Cordoba (Caballerizas Reales). There is also a show some days of the week (Pasión y Duende del Caballo Andaluz). This should be made clear here on tripadvisor. I am writing about the visit to the stables only. We were in Cordoba on a Tuesday and there was no show (if you’re planning on visiting Cordoba in August look up opening days and times – a lot of attractions were closed early in the week – this was very disappointing as we ended up visiting the Mesquita and just wondering the streets on a Tuesday as everything was either closed or open only a few hours in the morning). I begin by mentioning the information on the website is misleading and incomplete. There is a visit which costs €5 just to enter the courtyard of the stables and it should be clearly presented. The opening times are nowhere clearly mentioned. We went by the door of this location on the previous day and there was no mention of it being open on Tuesdays… but it said so on google, so on Tuesday we decided to risk it and go there and found it open. You pay €5 to enter and are free to roam the small courtyard (where the show takes place). That is it. There was a riding lesson taking place in the arena and that was all we got to see for over one hour… the lady in the box office told us that as soon as the class ended there would be the training of the horses, and eventually we saw two horses being prepped and some exercises in the arena. We could not enter the stables nor come close to the horses – there was a rope. There was no guide to explain anything at all. We just sat in a plastic chair seeing someone else’s riding lesson.. It is not that €5 is a lot but I was expecting something else. We spend the better part of the morning there waiting for something to happen (which in our case meant we sacrificed visiting the other attractions that were only open in the morning on Tuesdays)… There was a large room with horse carriages but we were not allowed to enter… I guess the experience with the show would have been different but I am only reviewing the entry to the stables. There needs to be clear information available as to what is “included” in the visit and what it is supposed to be. Very very disappointing and misleading, especially as I have horse-loving family expecting a lot more (as in other similar locations elsewhere). Read more Written September 7, 2022

I recommend buying the premium tickets to get early access to the horses and stables, where you can scratch the noses of these majestic animals...if you dare. The tiny glass of cheap boxed wine you received on entry was disgusting. It gave my husband a headache immediately. You are not allowed to take photos and videos during the show. • sks161 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Go with an open mind and realistic expectations We attended this show tonight having booked late there were only premium tickets available at 21.70 €pp. However this gives you access 30 minutes before the show and an opportunity to see some of the waiting horses and better seats with a back rather than a bench seat. Entry is without waiting in the queue. The show was good and comprised of a number of different sections reflecting horse and rider skills. For me, the coordination was ok but not great and it was clear which riders were "at one" with their horses and those which weren't. I wasnt able to envisage the communication between horse and the flamenco dancer but I could see how the rider guided the horse to follow her movements. I felt it achieved what it set out to show, that a high level of rider skill and horse training is needed to demonstrate the beauty and strength of the andalusian breed, but not perhaps in a way that fully engaged me Read more Written February 26, 2020
  • 227nicolevp 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles For horse and dressage lovers! This is not to be missed while in Granada: the Andalusian horses are magnificent. Being a fair horse rider myself, it was easy to appreciate the skils of the riders and grooms. The friendly atmosphere and the pleasant good looks of the stables made it a treasurable experience to watch dressage and training two hours prior to the show (the tickets can be purchased at the same time as those for the show). The horses were beautiful and very bright. I observed two senior riders training a newly arrived white Andalusian horse to perform a cabriole. It was wonderful to watch. The show was extremely well presented with difficult steps for horses and riders. The Flamenco dancer (a gorgeous Maja!) greatly complemented the graceful dance with horses. 3 days in cordoba: cover photo

3 days in Cordoba

Also called the “the city of three cultures” for its history and all the cultures that influenced its architecture and design.

Below you will find a suggestion for 3 days in Cordoba. It is the city in the world with the most UNESCO World Heritage sites (4), all of which will be included here, so get ready to walk and be surprised by all its secret wonders!

Best Time to Go

Cordoba, like the rest of Andalucia, gets really hot during the summer months so we would advise you to avoid visiting during this time if possible. The heat will make it harder for you to walk and enjoy all the outdoor activities this city has to offer.

The best time to visit is during spring or the end of summer when the days are still long but the temperatures are a little bit more welcoming. However, during May the city transforms into an open garden which means crowds of people will visit to see the courtyards in full bloom. If you don’t like crowds we would advise looking up the festival dates.

One of the best parts of Cordoba is its most historical neighborhood: el barrio de la Judería (the Jewish quarter.) Not only does it have unlimited gift stores but also showcases how the cordobés live. The area is full of patios and gorgeous picturesque streets. However, don’t be afraid to get lost anywhere in the historic quarter as you’ll see myriads of stunning buildings and plazas.

The early bird gets the worm and that is the case with the Mezquita-Catedral (Mosque-Cathedral).

Year-round from Monday to Saturday, the Mosque is open to the public from 8:30-9:30 free of charge. If you are limited on time and resources make sure to come then! You will be swiftly kicked out at 9:30 so if you think you’ll need more than one hour, it’s entirely worth paying 10€.

To be honest, we spent 3 hours completely enthralled with the interior. We recommended avoiding visits from 14h to 17h as those are peak times.

inside the mosque-cathedral in cordoba_europe top destinations

As you exit the Mezquita, you will have some time to enjoy el Patio de Los Naranjos (the Orange tree courtyard), which you’ll see from an inconvenient angle as you wait in line to get in. Many locals believe that drinking the water from the Fountain of Santa Maria located at the center of the courtyard brings good fortune. Despite the signs asking people not to drink water, we saw many thirsty passersby.

From the courtyard, you’ll see the Torre Campanario which served as the minaret during the Arab rule. You can climb to the top and contemplate Cordoba from above for 2€ . There are no tall buildings in the center of Cordoba, so if you enjoy a prime birds-eye view. You won’t get a better opportunity elsewhere.

View of the outside of the mosque-cathedral in cordoba_europe travel

If you’re in the mood to look at local crafts head over to the zoco municipal (the local craft’s market) where you’ll see many leather bags as well as “Morrocan lamps” and jewelry 5 minutes away by foot. Even if shopping isn’t your thing, all the vendors are surrounded by dazzling patios which is an excuse in itself to go.

Just next door, there is a museum dedicated to Spain’s most controversial pastime: Bullfighting . Regardless of where you stand on the matter, we recommend you check out its patio on the entrance.

A minute walk away, you’ll see a medieval synagogue which is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday from 9h30 to 20h30 .

Next to the synagogue, you’ll see the Casa de Sefarad (Sefarad’s house) which functions as an ethnographic museum.

Walk up 2 minutes up Calle de los Judios and make a left where you’ll see la Puerta de los Almodovar . This is one of the last 3 medieval gates that survived the test of time and the most authentic as it is the oldest and the least modified.

You are now only 8 minutes away from Plaza de las Tendillas (the plaza of the little stores) which is the most important plaza for the locals. It is also on the way to the Roman temple . It is a bit unexpected to see a (restored) Roman temple in the center of the city especially next to the town hall.

Roman columns in Cordoba_ best places in europe

If you like exploring churches, you can find San Pedro’s church next to the Roman columns. If you walk east on Calle de San Pedro you will find the Parish of San Andres Apostol , but it doesn’t pique your interest, you can continue to the nearby Plaza de la Fuenseca .

Three minutes away by foot, you’ll arrive at Palacio de Viana in Plaza de Don Gome #2. The Palacio de Viana is an impressive home full of rugs, artifacts, and history with a 6€ entry . However, most people come here to see the Patios which are believed to be the best patios you can see outside of the festival of the patios in may. If you want to avoid the crowds in May or simply are in Cordoba at a different time, the 12 courtyards of Palacio de Viana are probably going to leave you delighted. If you have the time and are interested in seeing the insides of the 15th-century abode we recommend checking both out but it would be a lie to say that the building is more beautiful than the dozen patios. The combined entry is 10€ .

Where to eat

Just outside the Mosque’s walls, you’ll see sedentary crowds eating tortilla española (Spanish potato omelet) and a refreshing Salmorejo from Bar Santos . You can get a colossal tortilla (or a smaller ration) and Salmorejo for a bargain price. The Spanish tortilla might be from Extremadura but Bar Santos is one of the most famous places in Spain to get such a treat. As for the Salmorejo, it is proudly Cordobés– closely resembling gazpacho it is usually consumed in summer to make the scorching Andalucian summers more bearable.

Other dishes you might want to try are Flamenquines (deep-fried Iberian ham and pork loin), rabo de toro (oxtail stew or oxtail ragù depending on where it’s served), berenjenas fritas con miel (fried eggplant with honey) or caracoles (snails with a Cordobés twist.)

Start your second day, at the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos (Palace of the Christian Kings)  located in Plaza Campo Santo de los Martires.

Entry to the palace of Isabel and Ferdinand is 4.5€ (65+ free, 18- free,  students 2,25€)  with entry times from Tuesday to Friday 8h30 to 20h45, Saturday 8h30 to 16h30, and Sunday from 8h30 to 14h30.

Most visitors spend from 45 minutes to an hour wandering the gardens, two courtyards, the hall of Roman mosaics, and the royal bathhouse of Lady Leonor . The gardens stand out the most at the Alcazar since there is a variety of vegetation accompanied by ornate ponds. The King’s path (el paseo de los Reyes) and el Patio Morisco are particularly beautiful.

Personally, we think the entrance fee is well worth it, but if you are already familiar with the Alcazar of Seville or the garden’s of el Generalife in the Alhambra and you’re not so much of a history buff then this might not be an obligatory stop depending on where your interests lie.

Since you are already in the San Basilio neighborhood , you might as well go see some of its world-acclaimed courtyards . You can buy a tour or you can go to one or two patios that pique your interest.

view of a courtyard in cordoba_places to visit in europe

Some of the most famous courtyards in this neighborhood and Cordoba:

· Calle Martin de Roa,7

· Calle Postrera, 28

· Calle Duartas, 2

· Calle San Basilio, 14

If you don’t want to pay for an entrance you will still be able to see some public open-air patios throughout the center.

Once again, if you enjoy inspecting local churches, the church of San Basilio is around the corner as are the Royal Stables of Cordoba . The Royal Stables are interesting because this is where the Andalucian Breed of Horses came to existence. Entry to the royal stables is free, and its main attractions are the vintage horse carriages. If you’d like to see an equestrian show make sure to check on its website for availability and prices.

The Arab Baths or the Caliph’s Bath House is also located in the neighborhood and is one of Cordoba’s most popular museums.

Entry is 2,5€ (1,25€ reduced entry for students.)

Start making your way back to the Mosque-Cathedral and appreciate the triumph of the Saint Raphael monument . From here you’ll have a great view of the Roman Bridge (Puente romano), if you wish to cross it you can. It will lead you to Torre de la Calahorra .

Here you will have the opportunity to visit the Al-Andalus museum for 4.5€ and be able to go up the tower for a great view. If you are planning on going up Torre Campanario then it might be a bit redundant to go up the Calahorra tower as they offer similar views (except you’ll be able to see the mosque from here quite well).

calleja de las flores en cordoba_best places in europe

Make your way back to the Mosque to check out the best-known street in the city: Calleja de las Flores. This street was at one point a patio which was turned into a pathway and then a street; it was also voted the prettiest street in Spain . This is a great spot to take a couple of photos. On the very same street, you will find Meryan- Artesanía en piel . The leather store has a beautiful pair of patios adorned like the typical cordobés courtyard with myriads of plants and a fountain in the center.

The owner saw us wandering through his courtyard and kindly invited us to his store without the expectation that we would buy anything. If you don’t plan on paying to see patios, make sure to come to this welcoming place.

Patio in cordoba_travel to europe

If you begin to get hungry and aren’t trying to pay a pretty penny you can get a really cheap and hearty meal or sandwich at el Gallo de Oro located a couple of minutes away in Plaza de Abades .

This to-go joint is perfect as there are several benches in the plaza where you can chow down and enjoy the omnipresent Cordobés sun. The lady who owns the place is a sweetheart and specializes in rotisserie chicken and potatoes . However, if you don’t want something as filling you can order a variety of well-furnished sandwiches for 2.5€ apiece during the weekdays. Also worth mentioning that these sandwiches hit the spot and the price/quality is ridiculously high.

Plaza del Potro is a place that has seen a ton of history. The first thing you’ll see is another monument to the Triumph of Saint Raphael, the city’s patron saint who protected the city in its most dire times. In Cordoba, it is very common to name your child Rafa to pay homage to the saint and there’s a total of 11 monuments to the saint around the city.

Plaza del Potro has a lot of culture to offer, the last Posada (an old Inn) named Posada del Potro was turned into a flamenco museum . As you might know, flamenco is native to Andalucia and one of its most famous exports. The museum is free of charge and has yet another courtyard, it has two stories and public restrooms. Here you will learn about this musical discipline broken down into three parts: the dance, the singing, and the guitar. You will also learn about the cultures that have influenced it, such as the Romani or Gitanos as they are called in Spain. This museum is pretty interesting and probably will take up around half an hour.

Plaza in Cordoba_ where to travel in europe

Right across the flamenco museum, you will find the dwelling of the most famous Cordobés artist: Julio Romero de Torres . Entry is 4.5€ although many people qualify for free or reduced entrance. This two-story museum with six galleries where you’ll find Romero’s praise of Andalucia and Cordoba through his chef-oeuvres as well as some of his personal objects and correspondence. Even if you chose not to enter, the courtyard is open to the public where you can appreciate the orange trees and a surprising amount of tranquility for being in the heart of the city.

7 minutes away by foot you will arrive at Plaza de la Corredera , if you don’t mind taking a slight detour by a couple of minutes you can visit the La Iglesia de San Francisco (the Church of Saint Francis) which is considered one of the city’s most beautiful.

Once you are in the Plaza de la Corredera, you might notice that this plaza is different from those in Andalucia as the region’s main plazas are circular like a bullfighting ring. This is, however, the exception in Andalucia as it is the only main plaza that is rectangular. This is because the architect was from Castilla and Léon and designed it using Salamanca’s Plaza Mayor as his inspiration. If the weather is good– as it usually is in Cordoba– this is a great spot to sit down and have a beer or some tapas as you people watch.

Plaza de la corredera in cordoba_where to go in europe

If you have some time left make sure to go and visit the Medina Azahara which is 7km outside of Cordoba. Currently, it is a slowly evolving archeological dig but this UNESCO world heritage site is open for visits. The entrance is 1.50€ and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9h to 18h . Make sure to check the schedule before visiting as these hours can change depending on when you visit.
