The MUHC Birthing Centre delivers top-quality care

royal victoria birthing center tour

“We chose the Birthing Centre at the Royal Vic because of its long history and great reputation,” says DeMelt. “The decision also gave us peace of mind knowing that this is the place to be if any complications arise.”

While the Birthing Centre is open to all parents, it is also a tertiary care centre — the place other Montreal hospitals refer their high-risk cases—with adult and neo-natal intensive care units nearby. There is a continuous physician and nursing presence in the Birthing Centre, which also has two operating rooms and its own generators, to ensure power is never lost. Most importantly, MUHC specialists from virtually every field of medicine are on-call around the clock, ready to assist with any patient emergency.

“At any time, about 15 to 20 per cent of our patients are high risk,” says Luisa Ciofani, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Obstetrics and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant at the Centre. “For example, if the mother has a heart condition or has been diabetic for many years, she will need close follow-up and monitoring. Mothers in pre-term labour may also come to us, because we have the resources to look after premature babies.”

How it Began

For DeMelt, the birthing experience started, as it so often does, without warning and at an inconvenient moment. She was picking up a decaf coffee when her water broke—a sign that labour is imminent.

“I skipped the coffee and headed home to pick up my overnight bag,” DeMelt says with a laugh. “But we weren’t sure whether we should head to the hospital right away, because I still wasn’t having contractions. In the end, we decided to go.”

By early afternoon, when contractions still hadn’t started, her team decided to induce labour. At that point, DeMelt was optimistically imagining she would become a mother by early evening.

It's called "labour" for a reason

“Our doctor told us, ‘Don’t expect anything soon, this is a long process’,” DeMelt recalls. “And it was. They don’t call it labour for nothing. But our team was exceptional and inspired confidence. We met a lot of them, because we were there for three shift changes.”

Dr. Tania Azar, the resident who assisted in the delivery of DeMelt’s baby, agrees with the sense of professionalism and teamwork perceived by patients and visitors to the Birthing Centre. “The Birthing Centre is a great place to work,” says Dr. Azar. “We have a wonderful team of physicians and nurses who work to ensure the best patient-care. Our goal is always to have healthy moms and healthy babies.”

Pain relief options

royal victoria birthing center tour

“On top of being incredibly competent, everyone had great bedside manners,” says DeMelt. “They were very sympathetic and gentle. When they saw I needed something for pain relief, and was resisting, they offered me a range of options. Eventually I chose to have an epidural, and things went very smoothly after that.”

“Complications develop in only a small proportion of cases,” says Ciofani. “On the rare occasions when this happens, we are good at helping families—and each other—through it.”

The Centre is also going into its third year of a program implemented throughout Quebec called MORE OB, which stands for Managing Obstetric Risk Efficiently, a quality assurance program that helps everyone in the Centre work more effectively as a team.

This story has a happy ending. At three minutes past three in the morning, Annie DeMelt gave birth to a baby boy—Logan Jack. “We were moved to Post Partum, where a range of tests and physical examinations were conducted—blood, eye, skin, hearing and so on—right away,” recalls Popple. “They check everything, because most families are only there for a day after delivery and most, like us, are complete beginners who need a little advice and encouragement.”

Less than 48 hours after arriving, DeMelt, Popple, and one-day-old Logan left the Post Partum to start life as a family. After all the fatigue, excitement and drama, DeMelt recalls one thing above all else: “The most memorable part was when I finally got to see his face,” she says. “I’d had dreams about what he would look like. I had spent months wondering about him, and finally I could say—it’s YOU.”

The videos cover when to come to the hospital, where to go when you get here, as well as what to expect as you make your way through your birthing journey.

Watch as one video on the Women's YouTube Channel.

1. When to come to the Women’s

More information about having your baby at the Women’s .

2. Where to go when you come to the hospital

Whether you’re coming in for a clinic appointment or coming to give birth, it’s best to know ahead of time where to go once you get to hospital, to make things less stressful on the day.

3. The Birth Centre

The Women’s Birth Centre, on the third floor of the hospital, is where births take place. This video explains what to expect when you are admitted to the birth centre.

4. The Postnatal Ward

Delivery suite

Our delivery suite at the RVI is the largest in the North East.

royal victoria birthing center tour

Our Delivery suite is the largest in the North East. It is on Level 4 of the Leazes Wing. As the largest unit it has:

  • 12 birthing rooms, one of which is a pool room. Seven are en-suite
  • 6 induction beds arranged as one 2-bedded bay and one 4-bedded bay
  • A 5-bedded Recovery area
  • A 4-bedded Enhanced Recovery area
  • 2 maternity theatres on the Delivery Suite
  • Access to further theatres if required
  • A training room for staff
  • Further toilets, showers and baths available
  • Free TV with Freeview in each birthing room except the pool room
  • Birthing balls, floor mats and birthing stools available on request

Your journey will usually start on the maternity assessment unit , for an initial assessment where we can then advise you if we recommend you go on to the delivery suite.

Once it is time to stay within the hospital, a midwife will take you around to a delivery room or induction bed.

As those using the delivery suite are usually experiencing high risk pregnancies the rooms have more equipment in them than you may expect to see at the Newcastle Birthing Centre. Each room will usually have;

  • A specialised delivery bed which can be moved into various positions to help labour and delivery
  • A drip stand
  • A machine called a cardiotocograph (CTG) used to monitor your baby’s heartbeat
  • An electronic blood pressure machine
  • A comfy chair for your birthing partner

If your baby needs any breathing support after delivery we have all the necessary equipment in each birthing room.

Criteria for delivery suite

All women have the option to choose to labour and birth on delivery suite but if you are experiencing a high risk pregnancy, we will recommend you have your baby here. Anyone choosing to have an epidural as their pain relief will also need to go to the delivery suite. Examples of pregnancies and labours that would be recommended on delivery suite could be

  • You are in labour and under 37+0
  • Your baby is estimated to be small
  • You are having more than one baby (twins, triplets or more)

Other examples include

  • If your baby has not developed as expected
  • You need a hormone drip to help with contractions
  • If you need an induction
  • You have diabetes or gestational diabetes
  • You have significant vaginal bleeding
  • If you have high blood pressure
  • Your baby has opened their bowels before birth, even if you are 37+0 weeks or more
  • If you have had a caesarean section before
  • You have a significant medical condition that puts you at a higher risk of complications at birth or afterwards

Speak to your community midwife or consultant if you would like to discuss your options for where to give birth.

Birth partners

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the policy for birth partners may frequently change based on what is happening nationally as well as Trust guidance. Full details can be found here.

If you or your birthing partner is either positive of, or has any signs and symptoms of COVID-19 , we ask that you contact us as soon as possible to discuss this on 0191 282 5748 .

As a teaching hospital we will often have students from various specialities come to the delivery suite to gain experience during their studies. They could be:

  • Occupational therapists

The students can be at various stages of their training and may be male or female. They always appreciate your permission to watch or participate in any part of your care as this experience is vital to their training. It is your decision as to whether you will allow any student to participate or watch any or all of your care or whether you would like to decline students altogether.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
