Mythology about Rudranath

Rudranath  is the fourth temple in the series of holy Panch Kedar . After killing their cousins at the war, Pandavas started their journey to visit Lord Shiva to wash their sins. Lord Shiva wanted to avoid them as he was deeply incensed by the death and dishonesty at the Kurukshetra war.

Therefore, he disguised in the form of a bull (Nandi) and disappeared into the ground with different parts of the body appearing at various places. The Pandavas built temples at all the places where his body parts resurfaced and worshipped him to please him. And that’s how Rudranath Temple was built.

The face of Lord Shiva is mysteriously embodied on a shivling, at Rudranath Temple. Check all temples of Panch kedar series. Panch Kedar, Uttarakhand.

This is among the world's unique temples, where Lord Shankar's face is worshipped.

Talking about the scriptures, along with religion, many temples of Lord Shankar are established in the country and world where Bholenath sits in a unique style. One of these is the Rudranath temple included in Panch Kedar which is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

This temple of Lord Shankar is situated at an altitude of 3600 meters above sea level. The most special thing about this temple is that the face of Lord Shiva is worshipped here. Not only this, but it is also even more special than the rest of the body of Lord Shiva is worshipped in Kathmandu, Nepal. Yes, this is the reason that this temple is very popular in the country.

This temple is also known as Pashupatinath Temple, since Rudranath is different from other temples, so people come from far away to visit this temple. While Shiva's lingam form is worshipped, only his face is worshipped in this temple. According to beliefs, the face of Lord Shiva is there in this temple and it is known as 'Neelkanth Mahadev'.

Do you know that the name of Rudnath temple is included in Panch Kedar?

According to the stories, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas wanted to get rid of their sins. For this, he went to Shri Krishna and wanted to know the solution from him. Then Lord Krishna advised the Pandavas to go to the shelter of Lord Shankar. There are stories that Lord Shiva was angry with the Pandavas because the Pandavas destroyed their own clan. So when the Pandavas reached Varanasi, Lord Shiva came and hid in Guptkashi, when the Pandavas reached Guptkashi, Bholenath reached Kedarnath and took the form of a bull. It is said that Pandavas received blessings from Lord Shiva.

There are popular beliefs that when Lord Shankar disappeared as a bull, the upper part of his torso appeared in "Kathmandu", which is known as Pashupatinath. Then there is the worship of Lord Shiva's arms in Tungnath, the navel in Madhyamaheshwar, the shape of the bull's back-body in Shri Kedarnath. Apart from this, it is said that Lord Shiva's jata appeared in Kalpeshwar and Mukh Rudranath. These five places are called "Panchkedar". One of them is 'Rudranath Temple'.

Rare Stone Statue

It is said that in the huge natural cave near Rudranath temple, a rare stone statue of Lord Shiva is seen in the temple. In which Lord Shiva appears to his devotees with a crooked neck. It is popularly believed that this rare idol of Mahadev, the God of the Gods, is Swayambhu and to date, no depth could be ascertained.

Lord Shiva, on the other hand, was deeply affected by the bloodshed and refused to meet with the Pandavas. Lord Shiva hid in the Garhwal Himalayas in the form of a bull, and when he was caught by one of the Pandava brothers, the body of the bull submerged in the ground, only to later rapper in other forms, which is now popularly known as ‘Panch Kedar.’

The trek starts from Sagar Village, which is approximately 3 km away from Gopeshwar. The return route of this trek goes through the Anusuya Devi Temple. Rudranath should not be mistaken as any easy trek, hikers not accustomed to long journeys and altitudes might face some problems, hence it is generally advisable that trekkers practice a reasonable amount of physical fitness.

Staying Option

As the revered Shiva shrine is situated on a higher elevation, except for simple accommodations maintained by the Mandir Committee and a few Home Stays, there are no other options to stay at Rudranath. Rudranath Trek

Rudranath trek overview.

Rudranath Trek is filled with the vibrant, peaceful, and fascinating colors of mother nature. In this trek, two of the five Kedars—Kalpeshwar and Rudranat, located in Uttrakhand are covered. The Kalpeshwar Rudranath trek runs through dense forests, verdant valleys, verdant meadows, lovely wild flower beds, and high hills, all of which provide breathtaking vistas. The trail is clearly marked and passes through several charming towns along the way. You will also witness the stunning vistas of the Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nanda Ghunti peaks that will quickly ensnare the viewer.

The spectacular campground is above the vibrant flower beds and enveloped in clouds with a bird's-eye view of a lush green pasture. And as you take the arduous uphill climb, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the snow-capped Himalayan hills in the front. The route from Dumak to the tall grasslands at Panar seems difficult, with protracted ascents and some areas where leeches are present, especially during and shortly after the rainy season. The remainder of the walk is simple and provides amazing scenery of the Alpine meadows, deep canyons brimming with wild, vibrant flowers, and lovely villages. One can see the hazy outlines of the foothills and Alaknanda cutting its way to the bottom to the plains from the peak between Panar and Rudranath.

As you take the hike after leaving the temple, a bridge will soon be seen. Take the ascending trail that you get after crossing the bridge.

Stay to the left of the stream and keep walking.

On the right hand side of the ridge, after about 40 minutes of trekking, comes a modest stone temple. Continue your trail ahead into the dense woodland.

A few boulders will appear on the left end of the route after 45 to 50 minutes. You can have your lunch here.

As you ascend, you arrive at the Bansi Narayan temple in a short while. It requires around 7 to 8 hours to get here from the initial point of the trek of day 3.

Beyond the temple, you have to head to the natural caves where you can stay for the night as it has the capacity to accommodate 30 - 40 people.

The path to the cave passes over several enormous stones which takes around 25 to 30 minutes to gradually ascend.

Rest at the caves from where you can see the snow-covered Himalayan peaks Nanda Devi, Trishul, Dronagiri, and Nandaghunti.

Day 4

Trek from Bansi Narayan to Dumak

Altitude: 11,482 feet to 7,874 feet

Duration: 5 to 6 hours covering 10 kilometers

Wake up to the views of a cave with amazing vistas of vibrant wild flowers scattered across lush green fields with beautiful Himalayan peaks directly in front.

Retrace your steps to the Bansi Narayan temple. The route turns to the hill to the right after you pass the temple. In five to ten minutes, you'll reach the deep woodland.

Stick to the right side of the valley as you continue down the muddy route. This stroll amid overgrowth and thickets filled with vibrant wildflowers is moderate downhill.

After 10 minutes, you will find one water stream where you can refill your water bottles. Further in your trail, you will encounter a few fallen trees and some boulders after which the descent becomes steeper.

The Alaknanda valley spreads out ahead after 45 to 50 minutes where you will locate Kalgoat settlement, a place that you can use to rest.

Dumak and Kalgoat are located around 7 kilometers apart. From the hamlet of Kalgoat to Dumak town, a two to three-hour journey along a clearly designated path is required. The path should be followed as it passes through plants and big stones.

A 20–30 minute stroll through the hamlet will bring you to an ancient stone Mahadev temple. The Dumak side of the hamlet is where this temple is located.

Continue trekking down the path that winds among the trees and bushes. After about an hour, the settlement of Dumak can be seen in the distance.

In around 40 minutes, you will arrive at a pre-primary school with a blue sign.

Either camp along the creek a bit ahead or stay at the guest house, which is approximately five minutes up the route.

Day 5

Trek from Dumak to Panar via Toli

Altitude: 7,874 feet to 11,155 feet, via 9,186 feet

Time: 6 to 8 hours to cover 12 kilometers

Start your trek early on day 5 and take the paved path that leaves Dumak village just on the opposite side. You will arrive at the ridge's end in about 25 minutes.

Take the trail that goes to the right where you will find severe descent along a muddy and narrow path. Stay on the valley's right side and keep walking for another 40 minutes and witness the Rudra Ganga river.

Cross the river and move towards right into the woods. In about 45 minutes, you will reach the end of the ridge, and enter the huge meadows of Toli.

Find yourself surrounded by gorgeous alpine lakes and vast green pastures at Toli, which is encircled by a dense forest.

The route gets a little more difficult after Toli as there are not many notable sites. Follow the route as it curves to the right and gradually ascends up the ridge. In 30 to 40 minutes, you practically reach the summit of the ridge.

Continue to ascend to the left until the rise gets steeper. You observe the greenery thinning after 45 to 50 minutes. When you reach the summit of the ridge, keep travelling along this route. From here, the trail contours the mountain to the right and leads to the Panar's slope meadows (11,155).

Stay in the tourist hut or a shepherd settlement nearby.

Day 6

Trek to Rudranath from Panar

Altitude: 11,155 to 11,811 feet above sea level

Begin the following morning after breakfast. Take the left-pointing route that leads to the ridge. To your left, there are several sizable stones and snow-covered summits.

The trail ascends the hill gently and after 25 to 30 minutes of climbing, you can glimpse the Panar fields below. After another 30 to 40 minutes of trekking, you come to a large overhanging rock on the left . Take in the breathtaking view from here, with the broad, lush Panar meadows below and the snow-capped summits in front, shrouded in clouds.

Continue on the ridge-climbing track and soon you will come to a section with large stones on each side of the route. After which the trails are well defined so your journey further will be smooth.

Marvel at the vistas of the Himalayas from this hilltop between Panar & Rudranath as you find yourself surrounded by snow-capped mountains and emerald valleys on all sides.

Rudranath is connected to Mandal Forest & Anusuya Temple by a short ridge on the left. The Mandal forest is traversed by this lovely route.

Keep the river to your left as you continue up the ascending dirt route. Flags and prayer bells will soon be visible in the distance. It takes around 15 to 20 minutes to get there.

On this path, this represents the highest mountain. From Panar, it requires 3-3.5 hours to get here.

After an hour-long climb, the Rudranath shrine can be seen from a distance. Prior to ascending, the route falls.

Day 7

Trek from Panar to Sagar

Altitude: 11,155 to 6,561 ft

Time taken: 4-5 hours to cover 12 km

Begin your last day of trek with a hearty breakfast. From Panar, follow the rocky, muddy route that descends to the left. In about 30 minutes, you will reach Lunti Bugyal's grasslands.

Continue your trek on the route that heads in the direction of your left from Lunti Bugyal. In 15 to 20 minutes, the route reaches a deep woodland. Continuing on the muddy trail for 45 minutes will drop you at a water stream. Take the cement bridge across it and trek through the woods.

After 25 to 30 minutes, a lovely meadow is visible in the distance and to reach there, you are required to hike another fifteen minutes.

The area is surrounded by forests on all sides where you can find a few tea and food stalls.

The route from the meadow continues into another woodland. Terraced fields may be seen to your left once the woodland has cleared for 30 to 45 minutes.

Follow the clearly marked track and trek through the fields. A brook will slowly appear as you move forward. From the point you reach near brook, the route narrows and goes through rocky stairs as it leads to Sagar village.

At the bottom of the stairs leading to the trail is the bus stop. Sagar village is on the Mandal-Gopeshwar route, and from here you may take a shared jeep or bus to Gopeshwar.

One can travel towards Chamoli village from Gopeshwar and catch a bus that goes to Haridwar & Rishikesh. After reaching Haridwar or Rishikesh, you are free to go to any location of your choice.

General Trivia About the Rudranath Trek

General Trivia About the Rudranath Trek

The mythology of PanchKedar is an intriguing account of the Pandavas' attempts to atone for their fratricide (gotra-hatya) crime of killing their siblings, the Kauravas, and Brhmanahatya (killing of Brahmins, the priest class), which occurred during the epic Mahabharata conflict.

On guidance from gurus and their beloved benefactor deity Krishna they asked Lord Shiva to forgive them and enable them to gain salvation. Shiva wanted to get away from them since he was upset with them for their behavior during the Kurukshetra conflict. He converted himself into a bull or Nandi inside the Himalayan Garhwal area. But after spotting Shiva as a bull grazing in the hills of Guptakashi, the tenacious Pandavas sought to restrain the bull by force.

However, the tenacious Pandavas attempted to forcefully grab the bull with its tails and rear legs after spotting Shiva in the shape of the bull feeding in the foothills of Guptakashi. But the bull vanished beneath the earth, only to return later at five different locations as Lord Shiva. The five locations where Lord Shiva appeared was at Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar. When Lord Shiva appeared in five distinct locations, the Pandavas were delighted. They erected temples at each location, worshiped Shiva, and received his blessings to find redemption. Later, AdiSankaracharya found the temples

Rudranath Trek | Part 1 | Being born in the mountains is itself a gift from God

Photo of Harsh Negi

Rudranath temple is the Tritiya (third) Kedar amongst Panch Kedar situated in Gopeshwar Mandal in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Located at approx 3,600 meters above sea level, the Rudranath temple is dedicated to worship Lord Shiva.

Photo of Rudranath Trek | Part 1 | Being born in the mountains is itself a gift from God 2/9 by Harsh Negi

The Trek of 22-25 kilometers towards Rudranath Temple begins from the Sagar Village situated in Gopeshwar Mandal in the Chamoli district. Sagar is a small and beautiful village situated in Chamoli District. This lockdown allowed us to visit this beautiful place in July'20. I started my journey with my cousins from our village Daula of Rudraprayag district which is the neighboring district of Chamoli. We started our journey at 5'o clock in the morning from our place which took 3 hours for us to cover the distance of approx 80KM to reach the Sagar Village.

The route of this beautiful journey depends on where you are coming from. For the people who are from Uttarakhand only, it's quite an understandable and easy route. But if you're coming from Rishikesh, there are two route options you will have once you reach Rudraprayag. The first and the short way would be Via Rudraprayag to Gopeshwar Mandal & the second would be Via Rudraprayag to Ukhimath to Mandal which is a long but beautiful route. I would personally suggest the second route because of the immense beauty of nature you will find on your way. Also, you will see the beauty of Chopta (Tungnath-Chandrashila Trek) on your way if you prefer the Ukhimath route.

We started our trek at 8 am from Sagar Village with no idea how much time it will take for us to reach the temple.

After completing the trek of just one kilometer, we left the village behind us & it was a complete jungle path we were heading to. The weather was quite happy and favorable for us as there were clouds everywhere instead of sun rays and rain which made our journey even more beautiful.

Just to bring to your notice that if this is going to be the first trek of yours and you want to complete it in one day, it's gonna be pretty tough. However, if you have 2-3 days to complete the trek, you have the option to do that too.

After completing the first 5 km, we have reached a place called Pung Bugyal where you can eat something in the only dhaba there. Pung Bugyal is a beautiful place with small green grass in between a dense forest. You can also make this place your first stay if you have plenty of days to cover this trek.

Photo of Rudranath Trek | Part 1 | Being born in the mountains is itself a gift from God 5/9 by Harsh Negi

The trek was getting tough with each passing step because of not the good condition of the path. Slight rain and the path of the jungle made this journey amazing. The path of this entire trek is not in very good condition which makes this trek a little bit harder.

After the trekking of 5-6 km, we had our first meal which all had packed from home for breakfast as well as for lunch. The tiredness of continuous trekking of those 6 km and empty stomach made our home-cooked food (Roti, Aaloo ki sabzi, Chole, homemade achaar) even more delicious. Natural sources of water in every 100 or 200 meters never going to keep you thirsty there.

The next stop was at Lwiti Bugyal which comes after the trekking of 7-9 km and which is hardly 2 km behind from the next stop Panar Bugyal. At Lwiti Bugyal, you can have tea, snacks, maggie, or food as well in the only dhaba available there. That chai which is also known as the energy drink in the mountains (just a fun fact) gives you great energy after coming this far.

Rudranath Temple History:

The history of Rudranath Temple is closely linked to the Hindu epic Mahabharata. According to legend, the Pandavas, the heroes of the Mahabharata, built the temple after the war of Kurukshetra to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the sins they had committed during the war.

One of the most popular versions of the legend states that Lord Shiva was deeply angered by the bloodshed and dishonesty of the Kurukshetra war. He therefore disguised himself as a bull and hid underground. The Pandavas pursued him, but he split his body into five parts and appeared at different locations in the Himalayas. The face of Lord Shiva appeared at Rudranath, the hump at Kedarnath, the arms at Tungnath, the stomach and navel at Madhyamaheshwar, and the hair and head at Kalpeshwar.

The Pandavas built temples at each of these locations to worship Lord Shiva and seek his forgiveness. The Rudranath Temple is therefore one of the five Panch Kedar temples, which are considered to be among the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites.

Another version of the legend states that the Rudranath Temple was built by the Pandavas to worship Lord Shiva in his form as Rudra, the fierce and destructive aspect of the god. Rudra is associated with the elements of fire and wind, and the Rudranath Temple is located in a remote and rugged region of the Himalayas, which is often battered by extreme weather conditions.

The Rudranath Temple is believed to be one of the oldest Hindu temples in the Himalayas. It is mentioned in several ancient texts, including the Skanda Purana and the Kedarnath Mahatmya. The temple is also believed to have been visited by many famous Hindu saints and sages, including Adi Shankara and Swami Vivekananda.

Today, the Rudranath Temple is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus from all over the world. The temple is open to visitors from May to June and September to October. The winter months are too harsh for people to travel to the temple, so it remains closed during that time.

Legend of Rudranath Temple:

The legend of Rudranath Temple is one of the most captivating and well-known in Hindu mythology. It is believed that the Pandavas, the heroes of the epic Mahabharata, came to the Himalayan mountains in search of Lord Shiva to redeem themselves of the sins of killing in the war. Lord Shiva did not want to meet them, so he disguised himself as a bull and disappeared into the ground. The Pandavas followed him, but he reappeared in different parts of the Himalayas. His hump appeared at Kedarnath, his arms at Tungnath, his stomach and navel at Madhyamaheshwar, his face at Rudranath, and his hair and head at Kalpeshwar.

The Pandavas built temples at each of these five places to worship Lord Shiva and to seek his forgiveness. The Rudranath Temple is therefore believed to house the face of Lord Shiva. The main deity of the temple is a Swayambhu Shivalinga, a naturally formed Shivalinga that is said to have appeared on its own. The Shivalinga has a human face carved into it, and it is believed to be a manifestation of Lord Shiva’s face.

The Rudranath Temple is located in a remote and inaccessible part of the Himalayas, at an altitude of over 3,500 meters. It is a challenging trek to reach the temple, but the journey is well worth it for the stunning scenery and the spiritual experience of visiting one of the most sacred temples in Hinduism.

In addition to the main legend of the Pandavas, there are a number of other legends associated with the Rudranath Temple. One legend says that the temple was built by the sage Narada, and another legend says that the temple was visited by the goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva’s consort.
