Tata Motors is set to electrify the SUV market with its anticipated Tata Safari EV, recently spotted during testing on highways. This upcoming SUV is the electric version of the popular 7-seater Safari, signaling Tata’s commitment to electric mobility.

In the spy shots, the Tata Safari EV maintains its robust and spacious appearance, much like its traditional counterpart. Despite heavy camouflage, key electric features are noticeable, including connected taillamps, a rear wiper, and a roof-mounted spoiler with a shark fin antenna, adding to its modern appeal.

While the exterior remains concealed, certain features like massive wheel arches, alloy wheels, and black door cladding hint at its SUV pedigree. At the front, Tata’s signature design elements, likely incorporating sleek LED light bars and headlamps, are expected, complemented by a substantial grille section tailored for an electric setup.

Underneath, the Tata Safari EV is rumored to pack impressive specs. Reports suggest it will offer front-wheel-drive setups, with optional all-wheel-drive versions for enhanced traction. Equipped with a 60 kWh battery pack, the Safari EV is poised to deliver an impressive range exceeding 500 km—a crucial factor for Indian consumers looking for long-distance capabilities. Advanced EV features such as vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging capabilities further enhance its appeal, allowing it to charge external devices or other electric vehicles.

Tata Safari EV Spied Testing In India Ahead Of Launch

When it comes to pricing, the Tata Safari EV is expected to be competitively positioned, likely falling within the Rs 30 lakh – Rs 35 lakh bracket, making it an attractive choice in the premium EV segment.

Alongside the Safari EV, Tata Motors has an ambitious lineup of electric vehicles, including the Nexon EV, Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV and a smaller 5 seater version of the Safari EV – Harrier EV. With the Safari EV joining this lineup, Tata Motors aims to maintain its position as a leader in the Indian EV market, offering consumers a diverse range of eco-friendly options.

Overall, the Tata Safari EV represents a significant leap forward in Tata Motors’ electric vehicle journey, combining style, performance, and sustainability to deliver an appealing SUV experience for Indian consumers. As Tata continues to prioritize electric mobility, the Safari EV is poised to make a meaningful impact in the Indian automotive landscape, providing consumers with a compelling choice in the growing EV market.

New Tata Safari test mule spotted, could be all-electric version

  • Tata Safari.ev might come with all-wheel drive powertrain as well.

Tata Safari.ev

Tata Motors is working on several new models for the Indian market. The brand recently launched the Punch.ev but there are more electric vehicles that will soon be launched in the Indian market. One such model will be the Safari.ev. Recently, a test mule of the Safari was spotted on Indian roads which is interesting because the SUV is already on sale. Moreover, in the image, the exhaust pipe is not visible so there is a possibility that Tata Motors has started testing the electric version of the Safari. This does not come as a surprise because last year, Harrier.ev was also spotted in Pune.

In terms of design language, the Safari.ev looks quite similar to the standard Safari. However, the production version of the Safari.ev will have some EV specific changes such as a closed-off grille and aero caps for the wheels to smoothen out the aerodynamics of the car.

The active.ev platform supports battery packs with a range of between 300 km and 600 km. Considering that the Safari is much larger than the Punch. ev, it can be expected that the SUV will have a driving range of between 400 km and 500 km when it finally goes on sale.

Tata Motors recently unveiled its active.ev platform with the Punch.ev. It is the brand's first dedicated platform for electric vehicles. It is expected that the company will use the same platform for Safari.ev and Harrier . ev as well. The active.ev platform is a 400-volt platform as opposed to an 800-volt platform that will be used for the Avinya. Moreover, the platform supports multiple drivetrain options. So, the vehicles based on it could be rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive and even all-wheel drive. Tata Motors has already announced that the active.ev platform is designed to secure a 5-star rating in crash tests from Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP.

Tata Harrier EV Testing

Tata Harrier EV, Safari EV On Test Rounds – Launch In 2024

' src=

Tata Motors has exhibited a strong commitment to the electric vehicle (EV) sector with the recent inauguration of its TATA.ev showrooms, exclusively dedicated to EVs. These showrooms are set to open to the public from January 7, 2024, marking a significant move by the company. Tata Motors aims to extend its EV-only dealership network across the nation in the next 12-18 months. The automaker has also unveiled an exciting lineup of new EVs, including the Punch.ev , Harrier.ev, Safari.ev, Curvv.ev, and Sierra.ev. The Tata Punch EV is scheduled for an early 2024 launch, while the Harrier EV and Safari EV are expected to hit the market in the latter half of the year.

Intriguingly, Tata Motors has commenced testing the Harrier EV and Safari EV, with recent sightings capturing their test mules on a tow truck in Pune. Although the spotted models were pre-facelift versions, the final iterations will be based on the ICE-powered Harrier and Safari facelifts that were introduced last year. Both test mules are anticipated to undergo ARAI range testing. Tata Motors has confirmed that its upcoming EVs, based on the Gen 1 (ICE to EV conversion) and Gen 2 (Sigma) platforms, will be high-range models , offering a range of over 500km on a full charge.

Tata Harrier EV, Safari EV

The Tata Harrier EV and Safari EV are expected to feature a battery pack ranging from 50kWh to 60kWh. While the standard front-wheel-drive (FWD) system will be uniform across the model lineups, an optional dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup will be available. The pricing for these forthcoming Tata electric SUVs is projected to start from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 35 lakh.

Distinctive design elements will set the Harrier electric and Safari electric apart from their ICE counterparts. Most styling features from the concept, such as a closed-off grille with a horizontal slat design, LED headlamps with a split setup, and LED DRLs connected via a full-width LED light strip, will be retained. Notable distinctions include EV badges on the fenders, flush door handles, larger alloy wheels, new taillamps with a redesigned LED light bar, and a more angular rear bumper with body cladding.

Change City

Pick from popular cities, tata safari facelift to borrow harrier ev concept design cues.

The Safari is also due a major equipment upgrade that includes ADAS and a larger infotainment screen.

Tata Safari facelift rendering

A heavily camouflaged test mule of the Tata Safari , which seems to preview a mid-lifecycle facelift of the flagship SUV, has been spied on Indian roads. Interestingly, the spied Safari facelift has similar design cues as the Harrier EV concept that was previewed at Auto Expo 2023.

Tata will soon also be rolling out ADAS features and an improved infotainment system on the Safari, bookings for which are already underway .

  • Safari facelift to borrow design cues from Harrier EV concept
  • New ADAS features, improved infotainment also on the cards
  • Tata engines already made RDE-, E20-fuel compliant

Tata Safari facelift: updated exterior design

The spy shots reveal a completely new front fascia for the Safari facelift. It seems to continue with a split headlamp design, but the main headlamp cluster on the revised bumper is now positioned vertically and more towards the edges. The grille also sports a new design with vertical slats and there will likely be a full-width LED light bar headlining the grille and headlamp assembly – design cues that have already been previewed by the Harrier EV concept.

There aren’t major changes in profile, however, the Safari facelift can be seen riding on new, blacked-out, twin five-spoke alloy wheels. At the rear, the SUV will likely get slimmer, connected LED tail lamps and a slightly tweaked rear bumper. These design updates will eventually also make it to the ICE-powered Harrier SUV.

Tata Safari facelift: interior and features

The design updates on the Safari may still be a while away, but Tata will roll out a major interior update much sooner. This includes a larger and much improved 10.25-inch infotainment screen – replacing the current 8.8-inch unit – that now supports wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay connectivity and voice commands in six languages. The Safari will also get a new 7.0-inch instrument cluster.

The bigger addition will be ADAS features that’ll include forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, high beam assist, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, lane change alert and more, along with a 360-degree camera.

Tata Safari facelift: powertrain options

The Safari facelift will continue to be powered by its 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 170hp and 350Nm of torque, mated to either 6-speed manual or automatic gearboxes. Tata's  new 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine  which is currently under development could join the line-up at a later stage.

Tata Safari facelift: expected launch and rivals

Considering that the changes on the Safari facelift are mostly concentrated on the soft plastic parts, it shouldn’t be too far away from launch. The Tata Safari facelift could see a market debut by the festive season this year or by early 2024. Upon launch, it will continue its rivalry with the likes of the 7-seat Mahindra XUV700 , the Hyundai Alcazar and the refreshed MG Hector Plus .

Tesla announces change of plans to build cheaper electric cars

Avatar for Fred Lambert

Tesla announced that it is changing its product plan to introduce cheaper electric cars to be built on its current production lines.

Tesla has been working on its ‘next-generation vehicle platform’ that is expected to enable a new manufacturing process called “unboxed” that should produce cheaper electric vehicles. The automaker has previously talked about two upcoming vehicles on the platform:

  • a model cheaper and smaller than Model 3, sometimes being referred as the “$25,000 Tesla” or “Model 2”
  • Tesla Robotaxi: a new vehicle designed from the ground-up for self-driving.

A few weeks ago, Reuters reported that “Tesla has canceled the long-promised inexpensive car”. CEO Elon Musk called the publication “liars” for reporting that.

However, Electrek reported last week that Tesla had indeed stopped all work on the new planned cheaper vehicle based on the new platform. Inside sources confirmed that Musk canceled a Gigafactory Texas expansion for the new vehicle codenamed NV9.

Today, with the release of its Q1 2024 financial results, Tesla confirmed the change of plans for its cheaper electric vehicles.

Tesla started by writing:

“We have updated our future vehicle line-up to accelerate the launch of new models ahead of our previously communicated start of production in the second half of 2025.”

Musk had previously announced plans to build next-gen vehicles toward the end of 2025.

Tesla continued:

These new vehicles, including more affordable models, will utilize aspects of the next generation platform as well as aspects of our current platforms, and will be able to be produced on the same manufacturing lines as our current vehicle line-up.

This confirms that more affordable vehicles are still confirmed, but not on the new production lines based on the “unboxed” system, which is in line with our previous report that Musk shut down the expansion for NV9.

Tesla explained the reason behind the change:

This update may result in achieving less cost reduction than previously expected but enables us to prudently grow our vehicle volumes in a more capex efficient manner during uncertain times. This would help us fully utilize our current expected maximum capacity of close to three million vehicles, enabling more than 50% growth over 2023 production before investing in new manufacturing lines.

Finally, Tesla confirmed that its previously announced Robotaxi will still be built with the new “unboxed” system:

Our purpose-built robotaxi product will continue to pursue a revolutionary “unboxed” manufacturing strategy.

Musk previously said that Tesla plans to unveil its new Robotaxi on August 8th.

Electrek’s Take

Some good and some bad news. Without the unboxed system, it’s likely that we can kiss goodbye to the previously mentioned $25,000 price point.

This is good news, and seems smart: Building in current factories using current techniques...Smart. The next best thing to actually having a modular platform. Why reinvent the wheel you actually invented?

Regarding price: $25K was an arbitrary number thrown out some years ago: Anything around 30 will be fine. There will be a synergy with size. In much of the world, Tesla's are large cars. A lot of people prefer, or want smaller cars. Sometimes this equates to low price, but sometimes a nice small car is not cheap. Mainly in the US is "small" automatically equated with cheap.

The comments about the Y and 3 being stale are a little lazy. The Y was the best selling car in the world last year, and the 3 was significantly updated and will do well in the sedan sector. But having just 2 mass market cars is not a good thing, and that in itself seems stale after a few years. So a new small car will be an important change in how Tesla is viewed.

A small car at a fair price will sell very well worldwide. So will a performance version at a higher price. Doing so without revamping manufacturing is smart...finally something smart. And if done in a timely manner, it will really boost the company. This is positive news to me.

Tesla is signaling still cheaper EVs coming, but the automaker has already maxed out a lot of the cost-cutting on the existing platform and manufacturing lines. They will likely be smaller and cheaper, but I doubt they will come close to $25,000.

However, they could come faster on the existing production lines. Tesla is not going as far as confirming that, but it sort of hints at it.

Or it could also be that only the Robotaxi timeline is accelerated.

After all, Musk did announce a sooner-than-expected unveiling of the Robotaxi after canceling the NV9 program.

About this report

The Global EV Outlook is an annual publication that identifies and assesses recent developments in electric mobility across the globe. It is developed with the support of members of the Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI).

Combining analysis of historical data with projections – now extended to 2035 – the report examines key areas of interest such as the deployment of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, battery demand, investment trends, and related policy developments in major and emerging markets. It also considers what wider EV adoption means for electricity and oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The report includes analysis of lessons learned from leading markets, providing information for policy makers and stakeholders on policy frameworks and market systems that support electric vehicle uptake.

This edition also features analysis of electric vehicle affordability, second-hand markets, lifecycle emissions of electric cars and their batteries, and grid impacts from charging medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks. Two online tools are made available alongside the report: the Global EV Data Explorer and the Global EV Policy Explorer, which allow users to interactively explore EV statistics and projections, and policy measures worldwide.

2025 Range Rover EV Shown Testing in Arctic Circle

Land Rover's first fully electric vehicle was shown testing in frigid temperatures near the Arctic Circle ahead of its arrival in the near future.

2025 land rover range rover ev

  • According to Land Rover , the automaker is putting the powertrain through its paces by testing in conditions ranging from -40 degrees Fahrenheit to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • While the automaker didn't confirm any nitty-gritty details about the EV Ranger's powertrain, it did confirm the SUV will feature more than one motor.

The 2025 Range Rover EV is nearly here, and Land Rover has released new photos of the electric SUV engaging in cold-weather testing near the Arctic Circle. According to the automaker, the EV Range is undergoing grueling testing conditions to put the electric drivetrain through its paces. In addition to cold weather testing in conditions as frigid as -40 degrees Fahrenheit, Land Rover is also testing the powertrain in desert conditions up to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

2025 land rover range rover ev

Specific details regarding the Range Rover EV continue to be scarce, though the automaker has let through a few crumbs to get us excited. According to the company, the electric drivetrain will allow the new car "to exceed its already renowned performance on low-grip surfaces."

What that really means, is that rather than the traction control system existing entirely within the anti-lock braking system, the EV Range can distribute wheel-slip management tasks to individual electric motors. According to the automaker, the change means that torque reaction time at each wheel is reduced from roughly 100 milliseconds to 1 millisecond. That also means—perhaps unsurprisingly—that the electric Range will feature multiple motors. Land Rover says it developed new software to enable precise control over individual wheels, meaning the model could feature a drive unit at each corner.

Given that the automaker previously confirmed the Range Rover EV will match the V-8's performance, the news doesn't come as a big surprise. The current top-spec SV produces a mighty 606 horsepower from its V-8 heart. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until closer to its arrival for Land Rover to confirm power figures as well as pricing for the Range Rover EV.

Headshot of Jack Fitzgerald

Jack Fitzgerald’s love for cars stems from his as yet unshakable addiction to Formula 1. After a brief stint as a detailer for a local dealership group in college, he knew he needed a more permanent way to drive all the new cars he couldn’t afford and decided to pursue a career in auto writing. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver . His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf.

‘It Is Desolate’: China’s Glut of Unused Car Factories

Manufacturers like BYD, Tesla and Li Auto are cutting prices to move their electric cars. For gasoline-powered vehicles, the surplus of factories is even worse.

A road leading to a closed gate outside a factory.

By Keith Bradsher

Reporting from Chongqing, China

On the outskirts of Chongqing, western China’s largest city, sits a huge symbol of the country’s glut of car factories. It’s a complex of gray buildings, nearly a square mile in size. The thousands of employees who used to work there have moved on. Its crimson loading docks are closed.

The facility, a former assembly plant and engine factory, had been a joint venture of a Chinese company and Hyundai, the South Korean giant. The complex opened in 2017 with robots and other equipment to make gasoline-powered cars. Hyundai sold the campus late last year for a fraction of the $1.1 billion it took to build and equip it. Unmown grass at the site has already grown knee high.

“It was all highly automated, but now, it is desolate,” said Zhou Zhehui, 24, who works for a rival Chinese automaker, Chang’an, and whose apartment looks down on the former Hyundai complex.

China has more than 100 factories with the capacity to build close to 40 million internal combustion engine cars a year. That is roughly twice as many as people in China want to buy, and sales of these cars are dropping fast as electric vehicles become more popular.

Last month, for the first time, sales of battery-electric and plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid cars together surpassed those of gasoline-powered cars in China’s 35 largest cities.

Dozens of gasoline-powered vehicle factories are barely running or have already been mothballed.

The country’s auto industry is near the start of an E.V. transition that is expected to last years and eventually claim many of those factories. How China manages that long change will influence its future economic growth, since the auto sector is so big and could transform its work force.

The stakes are great for the rest of the world, too.

China, the world’s largest car market, became the largest exporter last year, having passed Japan and Germany. China’s auto sales abroad are exploding.

Three-quarters of China’s exported cars are gasoline-powered models that the domestic market no longer needs, said Bill Russo, an electric car consultant in Shanghai. Those exports threaten to flatten producers elsewhere.

At the same time, China’s electric vehicle companies are still investing heavily in new factories. BYD and other automakers are expected to introduce more electric models at the opening of the Beijing auto show on Thursday.

Electric car sales in China are still growing. But the pace of growth has halved since last summer, as consumer spending has faltered in China because of a housing market crisis.

“There is a slowdown trend, especially for pure electric vehicles,” said Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the China Passenger Car Association.

China also has overcapacity in electric vehicle manufacturing, although less than for gasoline-powered cars. Price cutting for electric vehicles is common. Li Auto, a fast-growing Chinese manufacturer, reduced its prices on Monday. Tesla did the same a day earlier, and on Tuesday reported a large decline in profits during the first three months of this year. BYD, the industry leader in China , made price cuts in February. Volkswagen and General Motors have also lowered E.V. prices in China this year.

Automakers with factories close to China’s coast are exporting gasoline-powered cars. But many of the endangered factories are in cities deep inside the country, like Chongqing, where high transport costs to the coast make it too expensive to export.

Almost all of China’s electric cars are assembled at newly built factories, which qualify for subsidies from municipal governments and state-directed banks. It’s cheaper for automakers to build new factories than to convert existing ones. The result has been enormous overcapacity.

“The Chinese auto industry is experiencing a revolution,” said John Zeng, the director of Asia forecasting at GlobalData Automotive. “The old internal combustion capacity is dying.”

Sales of gasoline-powered cars plummeted to 17.7 million last year from 28.3 million in 2017, the year that Hyundai opened its Chongqing complex. That drop is equivalent to the entire European Union car market last year, or all of the United States’ annual car and light truck production.

Hyundai’s sales in China have plunged 69 percent since 2017. The company put the factory up for sale last summer, but no other automaker wanted it. Hyundai ended up selling the land, the buildings and much of the equipment back to a municipal development company in Chongqing for just $224 million, or 20 cents on the dollar.

The municipal company said this year, while seeking insurance on the site, that it did not have a new tenant.

Other multinational automakers have reduced output in China. Ford Motor has three factories in Chongqing that have been running at a tiny fraction of their capacity for the past five years .

Hyundai is one of the very few automakers, mostly foreign, that have halted production entirely at some locations, although the company still has three factories in China.

“There doesn’t seem to be a concerted effort to shut down excess capacity, but more of a shift from foreign owned to Chinese owned,” said Michael Dunne, a former president of General Motors Indonesia.

The longstanding benchmark is that car factories should run at 80 percent of capacity, or more, to be efficient and make money. But with new electric car factories opening and few older factories closing, capacity utilization across the entire industry fell to 65 percent in the first three months of this year from 75 percent last year and 80 percent or more before the Covid-19 pandemic, according to China’s National Bureau of Statistics.

Without a big burst of exports last year, the industry would have operated even further below full capacity.

Chinese manufacturers, many of them partly or entirely owned by city governments, have been reluctant to reduce output and cut jobs. Chang’an, a state-owned carmaker, has a factory just a 20-minute walk down pink-bougainvillea-lined lanes from the former Hyundai complex. The factory’s many acres of parking were completely full of unsold cars on Sunday.

Cities that are particularly dependent on gasoline-powered car production, like Chongqing, face a jobs dilemma. Assembling electric vehicles requires considerably fewer workers than making gasoline-powered cars, because E.V.s have much fewer components.

Workers with strong technical backgrounds, particularly in robotics , can easily and quickly find jobs if they’re laid off, autoworkers in Chongqing said in interviews. But semiskilled workers — including those who are older and have not taken training courses to develop their abilities — are now finding it more difficult to obtain work.

Mr. Zhou said that when he applied for his job at Chang’an, “it was a fierce competition.”

Still, it is extremely hard to find unemployed former Hyundai workers in Chongqing these days, even in the neighborhood of the former factory.

Most factory workers in China are migrants who grew up in rural areas and have few connections to the communities where gasoline-powered cars have been built. So they can easily move to other cities or industries when they lose jobs.

Yet a tinge of gloom hangs over the car industry in Chongqing, as demand slows and less skilled workers have fewer opportunities to earn overtime pay. Hyundai’s signage is still visible in many places at its former factory, but a large shadow on the front gate shows where an optimistic slogan used to hang: “New Thinking, New Possibilities.”

Do the Germans have an impressively long word for something that is all new, yet feels reassuringly familiar? If they do, that’s how we’d like to describe the new all-electric Porsche Macan.

It looks similar to the old Macan on the outside, works a lot like the new Cayenne on the inside, and drives with the equal measures of refinement and enthusiasm that give Porsche SUVs their trademark feel. Sporty soundtrack aside, the fact that it’s electric is neither here nor there.

It isn’t called the “e-Macan” or the “Macan EV.” It won’t be sold alongside an identical petrol version built to appease drivers too scared by range anxiety to commit to electric (although the old model is available until the end of 2025 in some markets, including the UK).

It’s just the new Macan. An electric Macan that draws absolutely zero attention to the fact that it’s powered by batteries. No green badging, no cutesy wheels designed to look like plugs, no lightning bolt icons. Not even a radical interior redesigned to make the driver feel like their purchase is akin to forging a path into a brave new world. It’s just a midsize Porsche SUV that happens to be electric. This might not be an exciting move, but it is one brimming with quiet confidence.

Revealed in January , priced from $78,800 (£69,800 in the UK), and available to order now, the new Macan goes up against the upcoming Polestar 4 and the aging Jaguar I-Pace . For context, the electric Macan 4 is $16,000 more than the previous base model, or just $4,300 pricier than the outgoing Macan S, while offering similar straight-line performance.

The electric Macan Turbo takes Porsche’s smaller SUV into six-figure territory for the first time, but at $105,300 it costs slightly less than the $109,000 Maserati Grecale Folgore despite being quicker, more powerful, and with a greater range and faster charging.

It’ll also do battle with the Audi Q6 e-tron , with which it shares its underpinnings. Both cars are built on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, codeveloped by Porsche and Audi. It’s an 800-volt system that allows the Macan’s 100-kWh battery (95 kWh usable) to charge at up to 270 kW. That’s a little behind the otherworldly 320 kW maximum charge rate of the recently facelifted Taycan , but still means the Macan can be filled from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 21 minutes, Porsche claims.

Porsche's EV Macan is here to take on the I-Pace, Polestar 4, and Audi Q6 e-tron.

Split Trick Charging

Porsche knows such potent public chargers aren’t always available, so the PPE has a trick up its sleeve. Plug the Macan into a lesser 400-volt charger and a high-voltage switch is flicked, effectively splitting the 800-volt battery into two 400-volt packs, letting the car charge at up to 135 kW without a high voltage booster.

Plug in at home and the Macan will refill at up to 11 kW, and, while driving, its regenerative braking system can feed electricity back into the battery at up to 270 kW.

There are currently two versions of EV Macan, called the 4 and the Turbo, with more to come later. If you’re familiar with electric cars then you’ll already know the 4 is the one to get, as it’s cheaper, goes further, and is still more powerful than anyone needs a family SUV to be—even one with a Porsche badge on its nose.

Both models have the same battery and dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup. The Macan 4 produces 300 kW (402 horsepower) when Overboost Power mode and Launch Control are used; it accelerates to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 136 mph.

If you really must go for the Turbo (which starts at $105,300/£95,000), the rear motor is beefed up to deliver a total output of 470 kW (630 horsepower) and the 0-60 mph time falls to a supercar-like 3.1 seconds. Top speed is raised to 161 mph.

EPA range estimates haven’t been published at the time of writing, but on a brand-hosted media drive Porsche claimed a WLTP combined range of up to 380 miles for the Macan 4 and 367 miles for the Turbo. WIRED drove both models but spent more time with the Turbo, in which our average energy consumption hovered around 3.5 miles/kWh, giving a theoretical maximum range of about 330 miles.

Slight, Successful Changes

Although the new car looks broadly similar to its predecessor, there are a lot of changes to its physicality. The EV is sleeker, lower, and wider, with a wheelbase stretched by some 86 millimeters.

The seating position is also lower, and that splitter extending slightly from the chin means Porsche’s smaller SUV has dropped all pretense of being some kind of off-roader. Indeed, you won’t be surprised to learn that departure angles, wading depth, and other metrics that excite off-roading enthusiasts are missing from Porsche’s Macan vocabulary. Despite the all-wheel drive, this is most definitely an on-roader.

The 4 and Turbo differ slightly, but the changes to their exterior styling are so subtle they’d be good content for a spot-the-difference quiz, especially when the 4 is equipped with the larger 22-inch wheels of the Turbo. Yes, 22 inches. Remember when exotic supercars rode on 18s?

We digress. It’s a stylish looking thing, with a good amount of road presence and a set of headlights similar to the Taycan’s.

Interior dashboard of Porsche Macan Electric

The Macan has an optional secondary passenger touchscreen with a special coating that makes it appear black when viewed from the driver's seat.

Sensible Cabin

Inside, the cabin shares a lot with the larger and recently updated Cayenne. This means the drive selector now sprouts from the dashboard instead of residing in the center console, where there’s now space for a welcome set of physical climate controls. Metal toggle switches click nicely up and down when adjusting temperature and fan speed, while a press of the illuminated seat heating (or cooling) controls sees the whole panel move with a satisfying click.

This, along with the volume knob and physical steering wheel buttons, shows that Porsche has thought carefully about the user experience. Plainly, the sensible Germans took one look at the touchscreen obsession shared by their rivals and issued a firm nein . The Macan is all the better for it.

It’s a car you can drive without recalibrating your brain to deal with touchscreen wipers, steering wheel indicators, or the lack of a conventional speedometer. Everything is where it should be and works as expected. It isn’t a new approach and it isn’t a particularly exciting one, but it’s safe, sensible, and, in our view, correct.

Even the audible alerts that chime when you stray over the speed limit are relatively inoffensive, and can easily be switched off with a couple of taps through the logical settings menu.

Speaking of which, the 10.9-inch touchscreen and its Android-based operating system is among the most responsive we’ve ever used. It never once lagged during two days of driving, and the navigation is so good—complete with clearly labeled local high-speed chargers—that we didn't long for the Macan’s wireless Apple CarPlay. Mind you, if we had used CarPlay, we’d discover the Macan now finally ( finally) displays navigation prompts from the connected phone’s mapping app in the 12.6-inch driver display.

There’s wireless charging too, accessible in a dashboard cubby that is cooled by the air conditioning, so your smartphone supposedly charges more efficiently and won’t overheat.

Also handy is the optional, secondary 10.9-inch touchscreen, fitted ahead of the front-seat passenger. This at first looks like overkill, but on our shared drive I was able to use this screen to fix a navigation issue by finding and deleting a missed waypoint—and I did so without the driver even noticing, because the second screen has a coating that makes it appear black when viewed at an angle. This means the passenger can even stream videos distraction-free.

Visual of drivers seat dashboard

A new-gen HUD uses augmented reality to seemingly project arrows onto the road ahead, but sometimes it offers more distraction than direction.

New for this generation of Macan is an LED light strip that runs along both front doors and across the entire dashboard. It glows blue by default, but can also display battery charge status when plugged in, and it handily flashes red if you try to open your door into approaching traffic.

Behind the wheel there’s a new generation of heads-up display that uses augmented reality to seemingly project arrows onto the environment ahead of you. This takes some getting used to, since its scale is designed to resemble an 87-inch TV placed 10 meters away. Sometimes it offers more distraction than direction.

There’s a new voice assistant, summoned by saying “Hey, Porsche.” It works OK, and is better than some others we’ve tried recently. It determines who has spoken to it, so when the passenger asks it to turn their heated seat on, it knows which one to activate. It’s fairly quick at answering simple questions and delivering the weather forecast, but has no form of memory and can't chain queries. So if you ask about the weather in London tomorrow, then follow up with a simple “Will it rain?”, it’ll instead deliver the local, present forecast. This is some way off from the ChatGPT car assistants we saw at CES in January.

Shun the Turbo, Go for the 4

Time to hit the road, and we're happy to report that the Macan lives up to its billing. It feels and drives like a Porsche. The drivetrain responds much like that of the Taycan, and it also sounds similar if you’re the kind of EV driver that enables the optional Porsche Electric Sport Sound.

It doesn’t take long to spot the typical Porsche trait of the control weights being perfectly matched. The resistance of the pedals and steering are all nicely judged, and, again like the Taycan (but unlike almost every other EV), there’s very little regenerative braking when you lift the accelerator.

Porsche takes this approach to make its EVs feel more like gas-powered cars, and it works. This means that Electric Macan owners will miss out on the joy that comes from perfectly judging a stop without touching the brake pedal. So they’ll instead see how the Macan can be driven in a more conventional manner. Keener owners will also recognize the benefits of how weight transfer is easier to manage, since the car doesn’t brake and dive the moment you come off the power. Rear-wheel steering is also available as an option, improving both low-speed maneuverability and high-speed stability.

Both the 4 and Turbo feel fast at any legal speed. Each is equipped with huge reserves of torque (a massive 1,130 Nm or 738 lb-ft in the latter), ready to slingshot you out of corners, past slower traffic, or down a highway on-ramp.

If the higher cost and slightly lower range aren’t a concern to you, then plump for the Turbo. It’s incredibly quick and comes with larger wheels, air suspension with more sophisticated dampers (the 4 sits on springs as standard), and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, which shuffles power between the rear wheels depending on which has the most grip.

However, most drivers should stick with the 4. It feels like reasonable value at just under $80,000, and is as entertaining to drive as it is practical. There’s a lot of weight here, to the tune of almost 5,300 pounds (2,400 kilograms), but it’s hidden well thanks to precise, responsive steering and an ability to remain flat and composed through corners. Only when braking downhill does the mass really make itself known, and while mostly comfortable, the 4 on its conventional springs rides slightly firmer than we’d like.

Lastly, that extended wheelbase over the previous Macan means more space in the second row, with decent headroom. Behind that there’s 540 liters of cargo space in the trunk, plus a further 84 liters in the frunk, the latter around a third larger than that of the enormous Kia EV9 .

Studio photography rear view of Porsche Macan Electric

With the Macan, the German manufacturer has managed to make an all-electric SUV that drives like a Porsche.

A Winning Second

The new Porsche Macan is not a groundbreaking car. It doesn’t form a new mold in the way the Taycan did five years ago, and it doesn’t quite match the latest Taycan for performance or outright charging speed.

But there needs to be a hierarchy—and clearly the sportier, pricier Taycan is, for now at least, at the top of Porsche’s electric tree. Instead of being a splashy new EV, the new Macan is, primarily, exactly that: just the new Macan.

But it’s also an electric SUV that drives like a Porsche, has an excellent interior full of sensibly implemented tech, and charges more quickly than its rivals. It also makes the Maserati Grecale Folgore look expensive, and it reminds us that the Jaguar I-Pace really is getting on a bit, with no successor in sight.

So, somewhat unsurprisingly, with its Taycan and Macan, Porsche has nailed the first two steps toward electrification. What comes next—a hybrid 911 and a pair of all-electric Boxster and Cayman sports cars—might not be quite so easy.
