The Tata Safari has just received a new addition to its range in the form of the Gold edition. The Safari Gold edition is priced at Rs 21.89 lakh for the manual version and Rs 23.18 lakh for the automatic version (ex-showroom, India). It will make its debut at the VIVO IPL 2021 being held in Dubai.

2021 Tata Safari Gold edition: what’s new?

Most notably, the Safari Gold edition has received a variety of cosmetic changes on the exterior and interior. For starters, it is available in two colour schemes – ‘White Gold’ which pairs the Frost White body colour with a contrast black roof, and ‘Black Gold’ which uses black as a base with a hint of gold that results in a very dark coffee brown colour. Both these versions get subtle gold accents on the grille, headlight surrounds, door handles, roof rails and badging. Completing the exterior looks are the 18-inch Charcoal black alloy wheels, similar to the ones seen on the Safari Adventure Persona. 

On the inside, while both versions carry the oyster white colour scheme as on the standard Safari, the Gold Edition takes things a step further. The ‘Safari White Gold’ gets a unique white and gold marble finish to the dashboard that is accompanied by a gold insert below it which runs the width of the cabin. The ‘Safari Black Gold’ on the other hand sports a black and gold marble finish on the dashboard, though, here the full-width lower insert is gloss black instead of gold. Besides this, both versions also get gold accents on the badges, AC vents, instrument cluster and door handles.

Tata motors has also used this opportunity to add some new features to the Safari over and above what is available on the current top-spec XZA+ variant. These new features include diamond quilted-genuine leather seats with ventilation on both first and second rows, wireless charger, air purifier, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The latter three features will also be offered on the Safari Adventure edition .

Tata will also be hosting a ‘Safari Gold Hit Challenge’ at the 2021 IPL, where every time a batsman hits a six and the ball lands on either the car, or the display podium or the Safari Gold commercial board, the carmaker will contribute an amount of Rs 2 lakh to The Akshaya Patra Foundation for COVID-19 relief.

2021 Tata Safari Gold edition: engine

Powering the new Safari Gold edition will be the same 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, producing 170hp and 350Nm, as in the standard Safari. The engine is available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox option.

Just like the standard Safari, the Gold edition model will compete with the likes of the  MG Hector Plus and the new Mahindra XUV700 .

Tata Safari Gold Edition, first impression: Shimmer of gleam, focus on features

• Tata Safari SUV wears a bit more bling courtesy the gold hues but the updates to the feature lists are what are, perhaps, most significant. 

Tata Safari Gold Edition comes at shortly on the heels of the Safari launch in a bitterly fought three-row SUV space that has seen major movements in recent times. And Tata Motors has been very active in taking out special editions of its passenger vehicles to create and maintain a buzz. At times, the special editions work wonders and at others, not so much. While one cannot fault the OEM for giving vent to the creative side, does the Tata Safari Gold Edition come off as something spectacular or is it a flair gone too far?

Tata Motors announced that the Safari Gold Edition is the official car of the Indian Premier League that resumed recently in the UAE and Oman. If you've been following all the cricketing action, it is quite hard to miss the SUV parked at each of the stadiums here. And yet, television and mobile screens do not do justice to the changes on offer in this special edition and therefore, I opted to take a closer look myself.

So, what's new and should you be checking out the Tata Safari Gold Edition? Read on.

Tata Safari Gold Edition exterior updates:

Safari Gold edition comes in two exterior colour options. Tata Motors calls it Black Gold and White Gold. Marketing terms aside, these are, well, black and white.

What's new though is that the white-coloured Safari is offered in dual-tone colour theme and has a black roof. But more prominently, both models have a front grille which is now done in a golden shade. This hue extends to the border outline of the head light units as well. At the sides, there is a Gold badge and the colour scheme extends to a dash on the roof rail as well as in the ‘Safari’ lettering and Tata Motors' logo on the back. All four door handles also have a dash of golden streak.

There is no feature update on the Gold Edition although both cars stands on blackened alloy wheels.

Tata Safari Gold Edition cabin updates:

Jump inside the Safari Gold Edition in white and there is a dashboard done in Mont Blanc marble finish - basically white. It seeks to add an upmarket feel inside the SUV although some of our readers have pointed out in the past that it resembles a kitchen counter top. Umm, well, I agree but shhh for now.

The black Safari Gold Edition, similarly, gets a black marble layout on the dashboard while both trims get golden shade on the side air vents, on the border paneling of the driver display unit and on the inside door handles.

Tata Safari Gold Edition feature updates:

Now this is where the Safari Gold Edition truly shines, figuratively speaking of course. The Safari Gold Edition has a cabin that now has an air purification system, wireless support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and wireless phone charging. My favourite? The seats are ventilated - front two in the seven-seat layout and front four in the six-seat set up.

Do note that air purifier, wireless charger and wireless support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is now available on XZ onwards, including Adventure Edition while air purifier has also been made available in the XT, XT+ and XTA+ trims.

Tata Safari Gold Edition price and other details:

Safari Gold Edition is available on the XZ+ and XZA+ variants, and as mentioned above, can be bought in both the six and seven-seat layouts. It is also offered with both manual as well as automatic transmission choices.

The manual Safari Gold Edition has been priced at ₹ 21.89 lakh while the automatic is priced at ₹ 23.17 lakh (ex showroom prices). There are no changes to the engine options or dimension of the vehicle.

In an effort to boost sales in the festive season, Tata Motors has launched the Safari Gold Edition in the country at Rs 21.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Mechanically, the SUV continues to be powered by the existing engine options, and the changes are limited to cosmetic and feature updates. The Safari Gold will be showcased at the VIVO IPL 2021 in Dubai. 

The upcoming SUV will be available in two colour options, namely White Gold and Black Gold. The White Gold has derived its name from the premium Frost White colour. Additionally, it offers a black roof to add more character to the SUV. Moreover, to distinguish it from the regular variants, it gets a glistening Mont Blanc marble finish mid pad with subtle gold accents. On the other hand, the Black Gold colour option features an intense Coffee Bean-inspired black exterior. As for the interior, it gets a dark marble finish mid pad and golden flourishes throughout the cabin.

For added convenience, the newly launched Tata Safari Gold Edition offers ventilated seats on both the first and second row of seats along with a wireless charger, and air purifier. Additionally, the new Gold variants offer Oyster White Diamond Quilted genuine leather seats, as well as Android Auto and Apple Carplay over WiFi. To further distinguish Safari Gold from the regular models, it gets R18 Charcoal Black alloy wheels along with gold embellishments on the exterior and interior of the vehicle. 

Mechanically, the Tata Safari Gold Edition continues to be powered by a 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine that is capable of generating 170bhp and 350Nm of peak torque. The transmission will be handled by a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox. The SUV offers Multi Drive Mode such as – normal, rough, and wet.

Tata Safari Gold first impression: Premium and feature-rich special edition

Special editions are an innovative way of constantly improving your product and also keeping it fresh in the minds of the buyers. Tata Motors has been steadily adding new features to update its popular Safari range. However, the recently-launched Gold edition goes one step further with new color options and an enhanced equipment list. Here's our first impression.

The car gets two new color options and gold accents

The Safari is already a handsome looking SUV but the Gold edition suitably enhances its premium quotient. There are two new color options available: Frost White and Coffee Bean. The former has a matte effect while the latter is more like a dark brown color. The addition of gold accents and black 18-inch alloy wheels are nice touches too.

The dashboard comes with a marble finish

Inside, the dashboard gets a unique marble finish instead of the wood panel in the standard Safari. Elsewhere, you can see the gold accents being provided on the instrument cluster, door handles, and the AC vents. The white leather seats also match well with the cabin design and are pretty comfortable. In terms of space, there are no changes over the standard Safari .

From seat ventilation to a panoramic sunroof

With the Safari Gold, Tata Motors has enhanced the equipment list with some essential features. Alongside the new leather seats, there is seat ventilation for the first and second rows; that is useful considering the Indian climate. Other additions include wireless charging, an air purifier, and wireless smartphone connectivity. It also offers a panoramic sunroof and a 9-speaker audio system.

It offers the same engine options as the regular Safari

The Safari Gold edition carries forward its current powertrain line-up with no changes at all. The sole engine option here is a 2.0-liter diesel motor that makes 170hp of power. You get a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Like the more expensive Land Rover SUVs, the Safari Gold edition also gets a terrain response system with different modes.

Is it worth your money?

Available in both 6-seater and 7-seater configurations, the Safari Gold edition costs Rs. 21.89 lakh for the manual version and Rs. 23.18 lakh for the automatic variant (both prices, ex-showroom). There is no doubt that the Safari Gold goes beyond the usual special edition template with some welcome design updates and crucial feature additions. Overall, we think it's a desirable premium SUV.

Tata Motors recently unveiled the Safari facelift in India, alongside the Harrier, ahead of its price reveal on October 17. This marks the first time that Tata Motors has given the SUV a proper facelift, since its launch in 2021. While the brand has made some notable changes to the SUV’s design both inside and outside, it is equipped with the same engine and transmission as its predecessor. So here we look at everything that is different in the Tata Safari facelift, compared to its predecessor.

Exterior Design

The new Safari's fascia gets plenty of new bits, including a new grille and DRLs, now linked by a lightbar. 

Borrowing styling cues from the Harrier EV concept showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo, the new Safari’s design is a clear evolution of its predecessor. The fascia now features a larger, mesh-patterned grille with a different finish, new vertically stacked LED projector headlights and new DRLs, now linked by a lightbar.

The Safari facelift's rear taillamps are also interconnected by a lightbar

From the rear, the taillamps now form a C-shaped pattern and are connected by a lightbar, unlike the previous model, which featured two separate LED units. Other changes include new alloy wheels that range from 17- to 19-inches, depending on the variant, along with a redesigned skid plate. The Safari facelift is available in a total of seven exterior colours.

Interior 

The Safari facelift gets a new freestanding 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display and a 10.2-inch full-digital driver’s display

On the inside, the Safari facelift’s layout is more or less the same as its predecessor, however, Tata has changed certain aspects of the dashboard to give it a more refreshed appearance. A new freestanding 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display replaces the unit on the older SUV. It also gets an all-new 10.2-inch full-digital driver’s display. An important addition to its list of features is that it now gets a seventh-knee airbag. Other changes include a new four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo along with capacitive touch controls for the climate control system.

The SUV’s equipment list includes- dual-zone auto climate control, powered and ventilated front seats, 360-degree cameras, front parking sensors, a 45W USB-C charger, wireless charger, air purifier, voice-activated panoramic sunroof with mood lighting, 10-speaker JBL sound system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Alexa integration, gesture-controlled tailgate opening function and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on the top-spec ‘Fearless’ and ‘Accomplished’ variants, respectively.

New Variant Names

The Safari facelift is available in four variants- Smart, Pure, Adventure and Accomplished

While the older Tata Safari had six trims on offer- XE, XM, XT, XT+, XZ and XZ+, the new one is available in four variants, or personas as Tata Motors likes to call them. These include the Smart, Pure, Adventure and Accomplished. What hasn’t changed, however, is the powertrain, as the Safari is still equipped with the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine, which puts out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque converter automatic (with steering-mounted paddle shifters), and drive modes include Eco, City and Sport. Terrain modes – now accessed via a new rotary knob on the centre console – include Normal, Rough and Wet modes.
