I want to install the Apple Safari browser on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine in order to test the latest HTML5 and CSS3 features of the browser.

I believe it is possible to use WINE for this but I want to know which version WINE should be used and which version of Windows I should emulate. Will Wine be able to support all the CSS3 animations or should I install Winetricks ?

Remotely debugging iOS Safari on Windows and Linux

Using this project you can debug your websites and web applications running in iOS Safari from a PC running Windows or Linux.

It provides a free and up-to-date alternative to the discontinued remotedebug-ios-webkit-adapter by RemoteDebug and is the spiritual successor to the abandoned webkit-webinspector by Arty Gus .

The setup scripts ( generate.sh or generate.ps1 ) download the latest version of WebKit’s built-in WebInspector and patch it to work with the WebSocket ios-webkit-debug-proxy provides and to be compatible with Chromium based browsers.

Requirements for running

• On Windows, it will automatically be downloaded, but you must also install iTunes for it to work
• For Linux, please follow the installation instructions .
• If you have Python or PHP on your system, you don’t need to change anything
• If you have Node.JS on your system, just run npm i -g http-server and you’re set.
• like Google Chrome, Edge or Opera
• like Epiphany/GNOME Web

Requirements for setup

• On Windows, I suggest using git for Windows in PowerShell
• On Linux, I suggest installing svn from your package manager

Instructions

• Clone this repository, https://github.com/HimbeersaftLP/ios-safari-remote-debug-kit to your PC
• On Windows, run generate.ps1 . On Linux, run generate.sh .

This will result in the folder WebKit being created inside src . It contains the WebInspector files.

• Plug your iOS device into your PC via USB
• On the iOS device, go to Settings->Safari->Advanced->Web Inspector and enable it
• Open the website you want to debug in Safari
• On Windows, run start.ps1 . On Linux, run start.sh .
• Then open the Chromium or WebKit based browser of your choice with the following URL: http://localhost:8080/Main.html?ws=localhost:9222/devtools/page/1
• You should be greeted with the WebInspector and can now debug to your heart’s content.
• Two windows will open. One manages the web server and the other one is ios-webkit-debug-proxy .
• Alternatively you can also press Ctrl+C in the web server window
• Press Ctrl+C in the terminal window to exit

Known Issues

• "Events" on the "Timelines" tab don’t work
• Canvas content doesn’t show on the "Graphics" tab
• Minor style glitches due to Webkit vs. Chromium differences

Hi! When trying to debug an old iPhone running iOS (and therefore Safari) 12, do we need to issue commands to change the webkit protocol to 12? I can list available pages with http://localhost:9222/ but when I try to run http://localhost:8000/Main.html?ws=localhost:9222/devtools/page/1 the Web Inspector throws an error “‘Browser’ domain was not found (at :undefined:undefined)”. This message is mentioned at https://github.com/HimbeersaftLP/ios-safari-remote-debug-kit but I am not “trying to inspect a page that is not inspectable” since this same page on a newer iPhone 16 and same URL works fine.

Hello, You can select the iOS version when running generate.sh/generate.ps1 using “-i ” or “-iOSVersion ” respectively. (You also need to run with “-f” or “-Force” if you already ran the script before to clean up the old data) Using an incompatible iOS version usually results in an “Unknown Instrument” error ( https://github.com/HimbeersaftLP/ios-safari-remote-debug-kit/issues/12 ). Does the list at http://localhost:9222/ only show this one page? The message “Error: ‘Browser’ domain was not found” usually indicates a successfull WebSocket connection but the selected page/Safari not cooperating with the debugger.

Thank you very much for your great project! Works very well for me and is so easy to install and use!! I previously wasted hours with compiling the old webkit stuff without any benefit…

However, do you have any idea how to get it working with vs code? As vs code is capable of the chrome remote debug protocol it should work somehow. I just don’t get the correct settings for the launch.json configuration.

Hi Alex! You are right that VS Code is capable of the Chrome Remote Debug protocol. However, WebKit uses their own protocol, that’s why my tool bundles the WebKit inspector. There used to be a tool that could translate between the protocols ( remotedebug-ios-webkit-adaptor ) and also a VS Code extension with the same purpose ( vscode-ios-web-debug ), however those are sadly both deprecated (which is the reason I made this project, as running the WebKit inspector is far less maintenance effort than keeping up to date with the inspector protocol).

Thanks for the repo and the blog. I have managed to install most of it but the web server is not loading in Chrome. I get localhost refused to connect.

I tried going directly to http://localhost:9222/ and there it shows my ipad and the web I want to debug that is open but when going to http://localhost:9222/devtools/page/1 it says:

404. That’s an error.

The requested URL /devtools/page/1 was not found. Frontend is disabled

It is using Python3 to serve the WebInspector

Hello! Using the python (or other) webserver instead of the page served by the ios-webkit-debug-proxy is necessary as the latter is very outdated. It looks like there might be something else already using port 8080 on your machine that causes the webserver of my script not to load. Try changing the port number in the script.

Hi, I just wanted to write and say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for making these scripts available, and also for taking the time to document everything. I had been pulling my hair out trying to just simply get proper error messages from iOS Safari console. Apple is totally unreasonable with their restricted access to the crippled web browser on iOS, and they furthermore prevent you from really having any other alternatives either because every browser is on iOS is still running the webKit engine as a rule. People like you, however, are making a difference, and I just wanted to say thanks for the effort. If there is a place to make a donation to you, I’d be willing to do so because you have saved me hundreds of dollars by circumventing the necessity to buy an actual Mac just to test my software against their awfully crippled browser, Safari. Your efforts are much appreciated. Thanks, Joe.

Best Web Browsers for Ubuntu and Other Linux Distributions

There is no such thing as the perfect web browser. It all depends on what you prefer and what you use it for. 😎

But, what are your best options regarding web browsers for Linux?

In this article, I highlight the best web browsers you can pick for Ubuntu and other Linux.

Every browser offers something unique. And, when it comes to the Linux platform, there are some interesting exclusive choices as well.

Before you see this list, please note that it is not a ranking list. The browser listed at number 1 should not be considered better than the ones at 2, 3 or 10.

• Unique tab management
• Pomodoro (clock timer) feature
• Mobile app available
• Resource-heavy when using various features
• Not 100% open-source

Vivaldi is an impressive browser that has been getting more attention from Linux users more than ever.

While it is not 100% open-source, you can find most of its source code (except for its UI) online.

With newer releases, they have been focusing more on improving the experience for Linux users. You can set clock timers to increase your work productivity, use the built-in translation for web pages, track your calendar, add shortcuts to web applications, and multitask at its peak with this browser.

Even though it is a fast web browser, I wouldn’t bet on it as the lightest or the fastest. You need a good amount of memory (RAM) to make use of all the features while you work on stuff.

Overall, it is a feature-rich web browser. So, if you require something with as many features as possible to multitask, Vivaldi can be your choice.

How to Install Vivaldi on Linux?

Vivaldi can be easily installed on Ubuntu and Debian thanks to the official .deb file available. There is also .rpm packages available for Fedora, Red Hat and SUSE Linux.

2. Mozilla Firefox

• Privacy protection
• Not based on Chrome engine
• Open Source
• Firefox Account services
• User Experience changes with major updates

Firefox is the default web browser for most Linux distributions. Hence, it is an obvious choice to start with.

In addition to being open-source, it offers some of the best privacy protection features. And, with the right settings, you can turn it into one of the most secure browsers similar to Tor Browser (which is also based on Firefox).

Not just limited to its security, but Firefox also offers useful integrated features like Pocket (to save web pages and read later), VPN, email alias, breach monitor, and more when you sign in with your Mozilla account.

How to Install Firefox on Linux?

It should already come pre-installed in your Linux distribution.

3. Chromium

• Open Source Chrome alternative
• Similar features to Google Chrome
• Lacks certain features that Google Chrome offers

Chromium is the open-source alternative and the base for Google Chrome and many other chrome-based browsers.

If you would rather not use Google Chrome, Chromium’s your best bet to get the same experience on Linux.

Even though Google controls Chromium and has been locking down Chrome , it is a viable option for Linux systems.

4. Google Chrome

• Seamless integration with Google services
• Not open-source

Google Chrome is an excellent web browser unless you do not want to opt for a proprietary solution or products by Google.

You get all the essential features and the ability to integrate Google services. If you prefer using Google Chrome on Android and want to sync across multiple platforms, it is an obvious choice for desktop Linux.

If you were looking for a simple and capable web browser while using Google services, Google Chrome can be a great pick.

How to Install Google Chrome on Linux?

Google Chrome offers both Deb and RPM packages to let you install on any Ubuntu-based or Fedora/openSUSE distribution.

5. Brave Browser

• Privacy protection features
• Performance
• No account-based (cloud) sync

Brave browser is one of the most popular Linux browsers.

It is an open-source project, which is based on Chromium. It offers several useful privacy protection features and is known for its blazing-fast performance.

Unlike any other browser, you can get rewards even if you block advertisements on websites. The rewards you collect can only be used to give back to your favorite websites. This way, you get to block ads and also support the website.

You can expect a faster user experience with minimum resource usage.

It offers sync capabilities, but you need to have one of the connected devices, considering it lacks a cloud-based sync feature.

How to Install Brave on Linux?

Unlike some other web browsers, you cannot directly find a package or in the software center. You must enter some commands in the terminal to install the browser.

Fret not, you can follow our instructions to install brave browser to proceed.

• Extra features
• Not open source

While Opera is not the most popular choice, it is definitely a useful browser for Linux users.

It comes with a built-in VPN and ad blocker. So, you should have the basic privacy protection sorted with the help of the Opera web browser.

You can quickly access popular chat messengers from the sidebar without launching a separate app or window. This is similar to Vivaldi considering the side chat messenger web apps, but the user experience is significantly different.

Overall, it is a good pick if you want a free VPN as an added bonus to other essential browsing features.

It is worth noting that Opera offers a unique Opera GX browser that lets you tweak/enforce limits on system resources when using a browser along with gaming activities. This was still in development for Linux at the time of writing, if it is available by the time you read it, that could be a fantastic option!

Opera provides Deb package for Ubuntu Linux distributions. You just head to its official website to download and install it.

You cannot find it in the software center.

7. Microsoft Edge

• Convenient option for Windows users who also use Linux
• Still in Beta

Microsoft Edge has surpassed Mozilla Firefox in terms of its popularity. Not just because it’s the default Windows browser, but it also offers a promising web experience while based on Chrome.

Yes, Microsoft Edge is available for Linux users, if you did not know.

Overall, you should find most of the essential features available with it.

If you use Windows and Linux as your desktop platforms, Microsoft Edge can come in handy as the preferred web browser.

Unique Web Browsers for Linux

Most users prefer to stick with the mainstream options because of security updates and future upgrades, but there are also some different options. And, some exclusive to Linux users.

8. GNOME Web or Epiphany

• Lacks many features
• No cross-platform support

Epiphany is the default GNOME browser and like the GNOME OS , not many people are aware of GNOME’s browser. elementary OS utilizes it as its default web browser.

It is a minimal browser that offers a clean and elegant user experience. You cannot sync your bookmarks or history, so you need to manually export them if you want to back them up or transfer to another browser.

You may find it pre-installed in some Linux distros. If not, you can install its Flatpak package to get the latest version on any distro.

Apple hasn’t released an official version of Safari for Windows 11 but you can still use it. So, Safari is only partly compatible with Windows 11. Apple ended Windows support for Safari in 2012 when it launched Safari 6 just for Mac users .

To download Safari on Windows 11, you will need to use the setup wizard for version 5.1.7. Follow these steps to download and install the Safari browser on Windows 11.

• First, open the official website of Safari and then go to the downloads section .

• Now find and click on the Safari browser icon on the top and then click on the Download button as mentioned below.

• Save it on your desktop.

How to Install Safari Browser on Windows 11 PC or Laptop

Once you download the browser, here’s how you can install Safari on Windows 11 system.

• Double click on the Safari setup file from your desktop to install it. It will open a setup wizard window.
• Click on next and you will see license agreement details.
• Agree to the license agreement by clicking on the I accept ratio button.

• Follow all other on-screen instructions and select the required installation options to install the Safari browser on Windows 11.
• If you want to change the installation location then you can change it while installing process. Or you can just skip this step.

• Click  Install and then click on Yes of UAC alert shows up.

Once installed, click on the open Safari browser option from the desktop shortcut or using the Windows search box and start using Safari on Windows 11 without any hassles! This completes the Safari download for Windows 11 process.

Update:  Few users aren’t able to see the Safari download option on their PCs on Apple’s official website and it’s redirecting to this page instead which reads “Apple no longer offers Safari updates for Windows. Safari 5.1.7 for Windows was the last version made for Windows, and it is now outdated.” In that case, here’s an alternative method to download Safari for Windows 11.

Alternative Way to Download Safari on Windows 11

To get Safari for Windows 11 even when Apple has stopped the support, you need to download Safari from a third-party website like this one .

Although, it’s not recommended to install Safari from such third-party websites as it may have adware and some freeware but if you still want to use it at any cost, that’s up to you. We do not endorse it but upon our readers’ request, we’ve provided the Safari download for Windows 11 link.

When Safari is running on Windows 11, you can use some awesome features. Here are some tips that will improve your browsing experience.

To add a new site, click Edit. Then type the website’s URL in the address bar, but don’t hit Enter. Click the small globe icon to the left of the website address and drag it onto a top site’s thumbnail.

Safari comes with a Reading List function. To view it, click the Show Reading List button. To add a webpage to the sidebar, click Add page.

Safari’s Bookmarks Bar now offers page thumbnail previews. To see it, select Show all bookmarks from the browser’s left side.

Safari’s URL toolbar can be customized. To do so, click the Show a menu button in the browser’s upper right. Select Customize Toolbar to bring up the popup shown below:

The only way to install the latest version of Safari for Windows 11 or 10 is by using virtual machine tools like VMWare or Virtual Box . You can even install and use all the Apple products that are not available for Windows.

The entire process takes little time and it is a very complex process. So you have to take care while setting up and installing Safari on Windows 11 using virtual machine tools. At times, your system might get slow too as the virtual machine requires higher CPU resources and RAM too.

In such cases, it’s better to use Windows 11 Safari browser as mentioned in the above method. But if you’re a developer and want to test out how the latest Safari version behaves on Windows 11 operating system, virtual machine tools are your best bet!

• If you have mutliple pages open or extensions installed, refer to http://localhost:9222/ for the page number that is at the end of the URL
• You should be greeted with the WebInspector and can now debug to your heart's content.

Troubleshooting

• If you get an error like Uncaught (in promise) Error: 'Browser' domain was not found from Connection.js:162 you are trying to inspect a page that is not inspectable (this could be caused by having Safari extensions installed). Refer to http://localhost:9222/ for the available pages and put the correct one at the end of the URL (for example http://localhost:8080/Main.html?ws=localhost:9222/devtools/page/2 ) for inspecting the second page.
• If you get an error like WebSocket connection to 'ws://localhost:9222/devtools/page/1' failed: from InspectorFrontendHostStub.js:68 , try unplugging your device and plugging it back in while the site you want to debug is open in Safari. Once you see the ios-webkit-debug-proxy console window display a message like Connected :9222 to Himbeers iPad (...) , refresh the inspector page inside your browser (do not use the refresh button on the inspector page, refresh the entire site from your browser).
• Two windows will open. One manages the web server and the other one is ios-webkit-debug-proxy .
• Alternatively you can also press Ctrl+C in the web server window
• Press Ctrl+C in the terminal window to exit

Known Issues

• "Events" on the "Timelines" tab don't work
• Canvas content doesn't show on the "Graphics" tab
• Minor style glitches due to Webkit vs. Chromium differences

Apple to unveil AI-enabled Safari browser alongside new operating systems

Safari getting new AI tools in iOS 18

The software — expected to debut as Safari 18 later in 2024 — is currently undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of Apple's next-generation operating system updates, namely iOS 18 and macOS 15, according to people familiar with the matter. Should all of the new features make it to the release candidate stage, users will be treated to a new user interface (UI) for customizing popular page controls, a "Web eraser" feature, and AI-driven content summarization tools.

Intelligent Search - AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization

Engineers evaluating the latest builds of Safari 18 can find a toggle for the new page controls menu within the browser's address bar. The menu consolidates — and provides quick access to — old and new page control tools, among them being the browser's new "Intelligent Search" feature.

This feature is not automatically enabled in test builds of Safari 18 and instead requires manual activation from the page controls menu. Once enabled, it's believed the tool leverages Apple's on-device AI technology — specifically the Ajax language-learning model — to identify topics and key phrases within a webpage for which to base the summarization.

In selecting key phrases, Apple's LLM software identifies sentences that provide explanations or describe the structure of objects, depending on the text in question. Words repeated within a text and key sentences are recognized as text topics.

These early indications suggest Apple is striving to deliver text summarization alongside Safari 18 later this year, though the exact implementation of this feature remains fuzzy.

Apple's text summarization features could be a response to rival generative AI tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. But Apple's on-device models and technologies like Private Relay could make the experience much more secure for users. Intelligent Search is also likely to be the same AI browser assistant that one X user hinted at a couple of weeks back.

Web Eraser for better content-blocking

Also accessible from the new page controls menu is a feature Apple is testing called "Web Eraser." As its name would imply, it's designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages, according to people familiar with the feature.

The feature is expected to build upon existing privacy features within Safari and will allow users to erase unwanted content from any webpage of their choosing. Users will have the option to erase banner ads, images, text or even entire page sections, all with relative ease.

The erasure is said to be persistent, rather than limited to a browsing session. This means that Safari will remember the changes even after the original tab or window has been closed.

When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state.

As for where Apple got the inspiration for Web Eraser, the company could have Sherlocked the feature from the third-party app 1Blocker. The application features a similar way of erasing ads, where users would tap ads to make them disappear.

Updated UI will move key tools into one easy location

The new page controls menu referenced throughout this article will attempt to offer Safari 18 users quick and easy access to several options previously located across different menus and the Share Sheet. Running on pre-release versions of macOS 15, for instance, the menu also pulls in the "Aa" menu common on existing iPadOS versions of the browser. These include zoom options, webpage settings for privacy controls, content blocking options, extension shortcuts, and access to the new AI and erasure tools.

These various options existed previously on macOS, but were found by navigating through the Safari settings menu. Having all of these controls in one central location in the Address Bar will make these options more discoverable for end users. Other options like on-page text search and reader mode are also in this menu.

This all suggests Apple intends to unite the iPadOS and macOS Safari UI paradigms when it unveils its new OS releases during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

AI-enhanced Visual Lookup feature could be available in 2025

Simultaneously, Apple is also working on a much more powerful visual search feature scheduled for integration sometime in 2025 that will allow users to obtain information on consumer products when browsing through images. People familiar with the tool say it's similar to the Visual Lookup feature, through which Siri can identify plants, pets and landmarks from photos.

Visual Search could be implemented as a system-wide feature. So, instead of surfacing search results in the Photos app, the user may be able to use Visual Search directly in Safari by selecting an image.

Given development of this tool is in the earlier stages, it remains unclear how Apple will ultimately go about implementing it. It also remains to be seen whether or not the feature will make it through internal testing.

The iPhone maker has expressed significant interest in artificial intelligence and more recently published research related to on-device language learning models. This goes hand in hand with widespread rumors about several other AI-powered software features, many of which are expected to make their debut later this year with iOS 18.

Another big year for Safari

From its inception, Safari was always meant to rival existing web browsers.

Safari was originally added to macOS as a means of replacing Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Mac, which was the default browser. Over the years, the app made its way to the iPhone , and has since received various upgrades over the years.

More recent versions of Safari provide users with personalized web suggestions, and allow for greater privacy protection with features such as iCloud Private Relay.

This latest set of enhancements only serves to better position Safari against the competition, in an ever-increasing landscape of generative AI tools and third-party ad-blockers.

While Apple tests many such features during different development stages, it is important to remember that not all of them make it to release. Apple has been known to delay features or cancel them entirely, so there's always a chance we may not see these new Safari features after all.

Along with Safari 18 and its associated improvements, we should also see a revamped Calculator with Math Notes make its way to iPadOS 18. Freeform Scenes and Adaptive Voice Shortcuts are new OS features, which are also expected to debut later this year.

Apple is expected to introduce various AI-related enhancements as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15, both of which should be announced at the company's annual WWDC on June 10.

As long as I can turn it off/hide it they can knock themselves out. 

Will the web eraser feature remove pop up videos, such as the ones that appear on this site?

I use the 'Reader' function in Safari quite a bit, but sometimes it doesn't work very well. Seems like something that AI could help make better. 

Web ads suck but how else do you think your favorite websites will stay in business? Are you prepared to pay a subscription to every site? I doubt it…

Safari to get an AI boost in iOS 18, macOS 15 with smarter search, web page ‘eraser’

Much of the noise being made about Apple’s efforts into AI has been focused on general improvements to iOS 18 and Siri as well as the upcoming M4 chip for the Mac. However, as we get closer to WWDC, more reports about the AI software that Apple will create are coming out, with the most recent one covering Apple’s efforts to enhance the next major version of Safari.

AppleInsider reports that the company is working on a new “Intelligent Search” feature that uses on-device AI to summarize a web page. The language learning model that Apple has developed can identify key phrases and topics that give an idea of what a web page’s content is about and create a summary for the user.

Other features that Apple is working on include:

• A Web Eraser that gives users the option to remove parts of a web page. This includes ads, text, and images. Safari will remember the parts that have been removed when the page is closed, and if the page is revisited, Safari alerts the user that the page has been modified.
• A new page controls menu that appears in the address bar. This menu essentially collects user controls that are spread throughout Safari (text size, zoom, Reader mode, Privacy Report, and more).
• An AI enhancement to Visual Lookup that gives users product information. This feature could also be implemented system-wide, not just in Safari.

Apple plans to implement the new Safari 18 features in both iOS 18 and macOS 15, which will be announced at WWDC24 on June 10. The report claims some features, such as the AI Visual Lookup, may not be available until 2025. That tracks with previous rumors that have suggested AI features will be rolled out in waves. AppleInsider also reported recently on Apple’s plans to update the Notes and Calculator apps.

April 2024 Updates to EBS Technology Codelevel Checker (ETCC) - Part I

The E-Business Suite Technology Codelevel Checker (ETCC) utility identifies patches that need to be applied to your Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 technology stack for the application and database tiers.
