Ping Hoofer Review: the Golf Bag That Revolutionized Golf Bags Is Still Plenty Good
The Ping Hoofer helped make stand bags the norm and set the gold standard. Today, it’s still the best golf bag for most golfers.

These days, nearly all golf bags come with plenty of bells and whistles. So many, in fact, that it can make shopping for one a task of simply determining what’s lacking from a bag. I’d recommend looking at it another way though — since nearly all bags are going to offer a decent amount of sizable of pockets, stand legs and shoulder straps for carrying, it’s best to decide what sort of quality you are looking for and what your budget is.
This is a long way of simply saying the best bag is still the best you can buy. That bag is the Ping Hoofer , which has set the standard for stand bags since the late 1980s . Thanks to its revolutionary angled bottom built upon Sun Mountain’s revitalization of collapsible stand legs earlier in that decade, the Hoofer was stable when the legs were deployed and completely changed how golfers walk with bags. Bending over for your gear before hitting the next hole quickly became a thing of the past.
As of writing this review, I’ve tested the Ping Hoofer 2020 model for two months during seven full rounds on carts and walking two 9-holes. After all this time on the course, I can confidently say it’s the best golf bag I’ve had the fortune of using. Here’s why we named it the best overall golf bag.
Editor’s Note: Ping bags work on two-year updates, and 2022 models are just being made available now.
Best Overall Golf Bag

- Divider: 5-way
- Pockets: 11
- Rain Hood: Yes
What’s Good About the Ping Hoofer?
The design components are as smart as they are useful..
It’s not just the stable legs and the smooth, consistent mechanism that pops them out and pulls them back in that make this bag extremely useful. It’s also features like a water bottle pocket that sits at the perfect access position while walking down the fairway, a strap puck that allows you to easily switch from single to double strap use, padded comfortable straps that make for easy carrying and 11 pockets with plenty of room for anything you want to bring on the course (including a full-length apparel pocket and a velour-lined valuables pockets).
The main material of the Ping Hoofer is a 300-denier polyester that shed water during one storm-riddled round. And the attached rain hood (that has its own pocket for when it’s not deployed) certainly helped keep things dry, too. At the end of the day, the Ping Hoofer just looks good — and all golfers know if you look good, you feel good — and you play better.
The Ping Hoofer is versatile enough for any round of golf.
Whether you want to walk nine (or 18) or you play a ton of cart golf, the Ping Hoofer can do either with ease — all while fitting 14 clubs in the five-way divider that allow clubs to move in and out without resistance. As mentioned earlier, the angled bottom (or the “hoof”) helped stabilize stand bags in the late ’80s, and the innovation lost in today’s sport. I found the Hoofer to stay just as stable whether in the fairway, green-side or the rough (which is where this bag spent a little too much time, if I’m being honest).
While stability in itself is important, most stand bags these days can also be used on carts, and Ping has an answer for that as well. The specific cart strap channel helps secure the Hoofer to a cart, and all 11 pockets are still completely accessible while strapped in, showing the thoughtfulness to versatility the brand has taken designing the Hoofer.
What’s Less Than Ideal About the Ping Hoofer?
The price can still be a tall burden to overcome, especially for budget golfers..
These days, $275 is the top-end of what an average golfer should probably spend for a golf bag. Unless you’re a pro or have a need for a behemoth cart bag, anything more than this is overkill. There are plenty of capable bags you’d be happy with for less than $275, so do keep your budget in mind. Below are some “comparable” bags less you can consider if you decide to not go with the Ping Hoofer.
If you want something a little more minimalist, the Sunday Loma XL is perfect and will run you about $100 less. While it weighs nearly 2 pounds less than the Hoofer, it does only hold eight clubs.
Need something for really inclement weather while still being a bag you can use all the time? The Titleist 4 StaDry is the standard for waterproof construction and weather-sealed zippers. It weighs less than the Hoofer, but also features just six pockets.
Ping Hoofer: The Verdict
Simply put, the Ping Hoofer is the best golf bag you can buy for the price because it’s the most useful bag for most golfers. While $275 is on the top-end of what you should spend, you do get your money’s worth with the Hoofer, and it’s a bag you’re going to have for decades — I have many friends who still use their Ping Hoofers from the 1990s. Toss in the smart design, legacy and good looks from Ping, and I can’t think of a better bag for any golfer.

50 Words or Less
The PING Hoofer 14 brings superior organization to stand bags with a 14-way top. Retains all the smart features of the standard Hoofer.
Introduction
Many golfers like to throw their clubs on their back and walk the course, but who likes having their clubs in a tangled mess? No one. For the player who wants to keep their sticks better organized while they trek, PING has created the Hoofer 14 golf bag.
Much like the Hoofer, the Hoofer 14 keeps the branding minimal . There’s a small PING logo on each side, Hoofer branding on the legs, and that’s it.
The design of the bag is even cleaner than the Hoofer – the sides have large swaths of solid colors without stripes or decoration. This is a bag for the player who wants to let their game do the talking.
The PING Hoofer 14 comes in 5 colorways : black, black/graphite/copper, graphite/white/crimson, red/graphite, and blue/black (shown here).
The key features of the Hoofer 14 mirror those of the standard Hoofer . First is the attached rain hood (seen above). The rain hood is smart on two counts. Having the hood attached means that you won’t lose it. Also, PING has located it where most bags just place padding, so you don’t lose any storage space.
The other standout feature is the way that the straps are connected to the bag. There are two clips (picture below) that allow you to carry the bag in a variety of different ways . If you’ve ever carried a bag with backpack straps, you know that trying to use only one strap can be awkward. With the new Hoofer, just pop one of the clips and the bag balances naturally for a single-shoulder carry.
Beyond these two standout features, the Hoofer has all the things you expect from a modern stand bag. There’s a cart strap channel that allows you to secure your bag without losing access to any pockets. There are 12 pockets with a cavernous total of 22 liters of capacity. Finally, there’s a water bottle pocket that’s perfectly located to give you a drink while you have the bag on your back.
Performance
The key difference between the standard Hoofer and the Hoofer 14 is the top. I found that the 5-way top of the Hoofer was enough to keep my clubs fairly well organized, but the Hoofer 14 takes organization to the extreme. The extra dividers make sure every club slides in and out without tangling. The Hoofer 14 also has an additional full length divider compared the standard Hoofer – four versus three.
This extra organization comes at a minimal cost: half a pound. The standard Hoofer weighs five pounds, the Hoofer 14 is five and a half . To me, this difference is barely worth talking about. Unless you’re an ultra-minimalist, you’re probably carrying several pounds of extra balls, water, tees, etc.
The single feature that makes the Hoofer 14 such a pleasure to carry is the strap system . With one clip, you can switch from a comfortable backpack carry to a well-balanced single shoulder carry. I suspect many of you are thinking, “I carry my current bag on one shoulder all the time, and it’s not that bad. What’s the big deal?” I challenge you to go to see the Hoofer 14 in person and experience it for yourself. It’s the feature you didn’t know you’ve been missing your whole life.
If you’re in the market for a new stand bag this year, it probably ought to be a PING Hoofer. The only question is which one. The standard Hoofer will likely be the most popular, but if you like to see your clubs perfectly organized, the Hoofer 14 is for you.

Nice review and nice bag. If you want a 14 way stand bag your choices come down to the SM 4.5 and the Ping Hoofer 14. They’re both constructed for durability and ease of access, storage, etc. However the Ping bag is unfortunately a smaller diameter top and the dividers do not extend fully to the bottom like the SM bag (at least the last generation). The smaller top leads to clubs binding quite often and is what lead me to the SM bag instead. I actually like the construction of the Ping bag more but wasn’t willing to deal with the binding problem If you look at any review of this bag the first think mentioned is the binding problem. I believe the SM bag has a 10.5″ diameter while the Ping bag is slightly smaller. Keep up the good reviews.
Did you find your clubs to tangle at all? I just got a Cobra ultralight bag and while I like everything about it… the 5 way dividers kind of leave my clubs a bit tangled, they don’t always slide in and out nicely. Also, because the straps are clipped and held right near the bag, that force from carrying constantly makes that connection point creak and make odd noises.
I found the Hoofer 14 to be above average in terms of clubs not being tangled. Nothing except 14 full-length dividers will eliminate tangles, but the Hoofer 14 is quite good.
Thank you so much for presenting the quality and more helpful resources.
I have an SM 4.5 LS and it’s fine for a cart, but I like lower profile bags in my car because I’m carrying bags for a couple of players most of the time. SO I went to PGATSS and filed a Hoofer 14 with clubs – comfy and lower profile than the 4.5 LS. and the Hoofer 14 owns more substantial to the hand materials, The 14 dividers bothers me a bit because I carry a ball tube to the range most of the time and it does not fit. But the Hoofer 14 is an attractive bag and the bag settles naturally in a good position on your lower back. Then I looked at the SM 4 plus bag – 4 lbs and somewhat minimalist and much lower profile than its brother, the 4.5 LS…. Compared to the Hoofer 14, the 4 Plus materials are not as subtantial and the Hoofer 14 has a variety of pockets inside the pockets that make it attractive as well as the magnetic rangerfinder pocket. If you want 14 dividers and a lower profile bag, I agree with taking a serious look at the Hoofer 14.

Ping Hoofer Stand Bag Review
Whilst Ping are best known for their pioneering Anser putters and iron fitting innovation, their stand bags have also been among the best in the market for the last two decades since they introduced the pop-out leg mechanism.
There are a few key things that I look for when I test a stand bag - I want it to be lightweight, comfortable to carry, sturdy and easy to store clubs and accessories.
The Hoofer has undergone a redesign over the last couple of years and so I wanted to put it to the test. Is it still the carry bag to beat after all these years?
The standard Hoofer bag features a five-way reinforced top, helping to keep your clubs protected and aiming to stop them from bunching up. A high impact polypropylene construction and anti-flex walls are said to provide plenty of support.
Adjustable shoulder pads help to make things more comfortable and they are integrated with SensorCool Technology to help with carrying on warmer days. A sliding strap connector allows golfers to carry with either a single or double strap configuration.
This is done thanks to an updated 'back puck' which makes adjustments easier, as the connector unhooks quickly and in one step.
A rainhood is fixed to the bag via a cable and sits inside the cushioned hip pad for easy storage, and also provides extra padding whilst walking.
A cart strap pass-through channel allows the trolley strap to wrap round a bag behind the pockets, meaning that you can access all of your different storage compartments whilst keeping your bag securely in place when you don't fancy carrying.
In total there are 11 different pockets on the Hoofer bag, including a valuables pocket, full length apparel pocket and water-bottle pocket which is designed to be easy to access.
Four other Hoofer bags are also available in the range - Hoofer Monsoon, Hoofer Craz-E Lite, Hoofer 14 and Hoofer Lite - providing an option for every type of golfer.
Ping bags have always been among my favourites when it comes to design because I think they do a good job of keeping things pretty simple, whilst also providing a range of different colour options.
The Hoofer bag is available in four different colours and I tested it in the Cardinal/White/Black version, which looks smart and should be pretty versatile across both the summer and winter months when the weather is more variable.
Whilst the Hoofer isn't small for a carry bag, Ping seem to have done a good job with the way they have organised the space because it certainly doesn't look bulky, even despite the fact that it is complete with 11 pockets.
The legs on the bag were sturdy and the fact that they look a little like a driver shaft is a fun feature.
I actually prefer this matte fabric finish rather than a glossy/shiny finish on a golf bag as I think it looks a little more premium, although you do lose the obvious drawback that it won't be fully waterproof as a result.
Performance and Functionality
Functionality is a key with a stand bag, as it's the last thing you want to be worrying about when you're playing golf and trying to shoot a good score.
Luckily that's exactly what you get with the Hoofer bag. I noticed this straight away when I was moving my clubs and other accessories from my existing bag into this one for the test, as I saw just how many different pockets and compartments there were to store my gear.
The thing that I think Ping are great at is the little touches, which might not immediately jump out at you, but which just seem to make life easier and they prove that their products are made by golfers, for golfers.
The attached rain hood, for example, is an excellent way to store a vital piece of gear that you are bound to need at some point when you least expect it. On top of that, it doubles as a bit of extra cushioning whilst walking, and it also frees up space in your other pockets where these hoods are usually situated.
Perhaps my favourite feature was the magnetic pocket on the top of the bag which makes it so easy to quickly access a rangefinder or scorecard without having to mess about with different zips.
I was also really impressed with the quality of the shoulder pads, as they fitted well and felt nicely padded which makes a huge difference to comfort levels over the course of a 4 hour round.
The base of the bag sits quite flat on the ground, a bit of a hallmark of Hoofer bags, and this combines with the sturdy legs to provide plenty of stability even in the windy conditions during my my testing, although I found that the actual stand mechanism was a bit clunky to use.
When I placed the bag down, it often seemed to struggle to fully extend the legs outwards without another push, which got a bit annoying towards the end of the round. It's worth bearing in mind as the bag won't be fully stable in the wind unless the legs are extended right out.
Unfortunately, the biggest issue I came across was that I had a tough time getting clubs in and out of the bag without them getting caught on the other clubs - it was almost as if there wasn't enough room at the bottom of the bag for all 14.
Ping Hoofer Stand Bag Verdict
The Ping Hoofer is a good all-round bag that looks great and is very practical, making it a good choice for most golfers.
I have been quite critical in certain areas of my review but that is because the Hoofer name carries some gravitas and you expect it to be a market-leader in terms of performance, which is why I was quite disappointed in a couple of aspects of its performance.
The good news is that Ping also offer the Hoofer Monsoon if you want a lightweight option, or the Hoofer Craz-E Lite if you're never going to use a trolley and the 2.5kg standard version is too heavy.
Would I Use It?
Despite the issues with the dividers and getting the clubs in and out of the bag I did still really enjoy using the Hoofer bag because it was packed with practical features that make life on the golf course easier. Finally it looks great and I think it would pair well on a trolley too!

I've had a Ping bag for the longest time and it finally has enough problems that I need to move on. I prefer a carry/stand bag for the light weight even though I don't walk courses. Any recommendations from the current Ping line-up?

You've done a ton of reviews on bags Why do you like the Lite over the normal Hoofer? Tangle kills me with the Hoofers lol, but always tempted to try them again
I carry very few things on the course so I don't need all the pockets the Hoofer has. The Lite is less bloated looking, is lighter, and carries so comfortably.
Yep, exchange clubs with the bag vertical and there is no tangle. Just becomes part of the routine. Nowadays I walk with 7 or 8 clubs, so that helps as well, hahaha
Hoofer Tour unless you want something lighter. All Ping stand bags are good.
Hoofer lite if you don’t walk, or the Hoofer Craz e lite if you do walk..Ping makes great bags.

Hoofer Lite is a pretty incredible “do it all bag”. It isn’t much lighter than the regular Hoofer, but it really does feel noticeably lighter to carry. It works on a riding cart and a push cart. If you could only have 1 bag, that would be my recommendation.

Hoofer. Hoofer light water bottle holder is a joke. Hoofer has more valuable pockets and better water battle pocket. And only half a pound heavier.

I like the regular Hoofer over the Hoofer light. I like the 5 way top better than the 4 way. I use it mostly riding also.

Really like my Hoofer Lite for walking. But, I switch to a cart bag when using a push cart or riding. Could probably use a Hoofer just as well, but it wasn't on sale and the Hoofer Lite was.
I've gotten better at handling the bag tangle (only putting clubs in or taking them out when I have the bag vertical), but I also usually only carry 12 or 13. But the straps, the padding, balance, comfort, are all perfect to me.
The Varsity / Heritage L8 with double straps have me intrigued though. Hoping they continue adding colorways to that line-up. I also miss the split garment pocket from the classic L8 from back in the day. If you like the look of the L8 and don't walk courses, the single velour strap might not be a problem and you can pick up one of those on discount or the 2nd hand market pretty cheap.

Hoofer tour is really stunning but it is not the lightest. Hoofer mr ping is a great choice but I assume it is not easy to find one without a huge markup.
I have a vintage tan and brown canvas type fabric Hoofer that I still bring out for carry rounds. Amazing how well it has held up.
I've got a Hoofer Lite Tour that seems to be the perfect do (virtually) everything bag. I rarely carry it except to the range but it sits perfectly on my Powakaddy and holds everything I need (and goes in the car easy!!)
I did have a Hoofer Tour but it kept rolling over on the trolley which was annoying.
In the winter I carry (trolley bans in the UK ☹️ ) and then I use a Hoofer Craz-e-lite.

tangle about the same as all the other hoofers? Just gotta keep it vertical?

Totally agree with you on the tangle. I love the idea of the Hoofer Lite, great looking and durable but the tangle drives me nuts. On a whim I found a 4 Series on eBay cheap and in GREAT shape. IDK what it is but the tangle is less prevalent and the water bottle pocket is bigger so it holds a large Hydroflask nicely. It doesn't have the cart strap pass through but it does have a nice pocket layout and ample room. IDK why Ping went away from this 4 Series design.
If tangle is a concern, I'd go with a Hoofer on the new lineup. It's like a half pound heavier than the Lite and the larger top is just a little better. But dang Ping, figure this tangle issue out!!

This is an excellent bag for any golfer who plays regularly in wetter conditions or is looking for a lightweight, ergonomic stand bag they can carry around the golf course.
A very lightweight golf bag that offers an excellent combination of comfort and quality. Although not waterproof, it's a sturdy bag that's perfect for the summer months.
The Craz-E Lite stand bag is super lightweight but still rigid and sturdy. The fact there's seven pockets in such a small bag is a huge bonus as well.
Lightweight but sturdy, this cart bag offers ample storage alongside 14-way dividers for simplified organization. It fits on most carts as well.
The Ping Monsoon Bag offers superb protection from the elements, with a water-repellent construction, eight seam sealed pockets and a 15-way divider.

Ping Hoofer Stand Bag
Our expert review:
Specifications
Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.
One of the best golf bags on the market and, perhaps, one of the most well-known, the Ping Hoofer continues to offer an incredible blend of performance for a wide array of golfers. In testing, it was obvious that comfort meets stability and style.
To begin with, it has had a slight redesign, which only heightens the bag's reputation further. We saw this in the fact that there are handy pockets inside pockets, a fantastic adjustable carry strap and a rain cover that is cleverly stored within the padding for your back. When picking up the bag, the comfort that is delivered by two well-cushioned straps and hip pad becomes apparent. Although it’s a little heavier than other bags, it provides a pleasurable walking experience from start to finish.

Ping Hoofer Monsoon Stand Bag
The Hoofer bags have built a sterling reputation, with Ping currently producing six different variations, including this Hoofer Monsoon. This is the wet weather alternative to the standard Ping Hoofer stand bag or the Ping Hoofer Lite for golfers who play during the wetter months of the year.
On first inspection, we thought that the bag has a very sleek design, with its navy base color contrasting nicely with the red rubber over-molded zippers located around the bag. In total, there are six roomy pockets on the Hoofer Monsoon, four of which are seam-sealed and can be easily opened with minimal resistance. Inside the waterproof pockets, you’ll find more than enough room for tees, golf balls, snacks and your waterproofs. Because of the space, it means you can organize your golf bag very easily.

Ping Hoofer Lite Stand Bag
As soon as we got our hands on the Hoofer Lite bag, it became apparent just how lightweight it is. Even when filled with a full set of clubs and accessories, it was easy to manoeuvre around the course, with the Lite taking away the issue of having something heavy on your shoulders for hours at a time. From start to finish, carrying the Ping Hoofer Lite is a pleasant experience, made all the better by two comfortable and well-fitting straps. Despite having just four sections for clubs, there is ample space for them without any getting stuck going in or coming out.
We really liked the big pocket down the side, which easily fitted a full set of waterproofs with space to spare, but the beverage pocket and golf ball pocket were a little small. However, these are minor concessions in a bag designed to be lightweight and easy to use. Pop in as many golf clubs as are legally allowed and a few necessary accessories in this bag and it's an ideal, lightweight companion and one of the best lightweight golf bags on the market.

Ping Hoofer Craz-E Lite Stand Bag
The Hoofer has become an iconic moniker within the stand bag market and this latest incarnation is Ping’s lightest Hoofer bag to date, weighing in at an incredible 1.4kg. Versatility is the key with this bag – If you want it to stay super light and go minimal with just your sticks and a few balls – it’s tough to beat. What's more, it features seven pockets so there’s plenty of space for equipment if you need to take more, or if the conditions are uncertain.
There’s also a sizeable apparel pocket that, in testing, could easily fit full waterproofs in and, with a seam sealed valuables' pocket and water bottle pocket, most eventualities are covered. The Hoofer Craz-E Lite is certainly nice and compact. In fact, it’s an extremely sleek bag that you’ll find very easy to sling into the trunk of a car, a locker or a flight bag. Given its streamlined and unfussy styling, there’s little to fault in one of the best golf stand bags money can buy.

Ping Traverse Cart Bag
Ping is renowned for creating some of the best golf drivers and best golf irons on the market, but what is perhaps most underrated in their arsenal is the quality of their golf bags and the Traverse Cart Bag is no different. The already lightweight bag has been newly designed to be even lighter at 5.5lbs, saving 0.5lb from the previous generation.
Although lighter, the bag does not compromise in its build-quality as it maintains the existing durable construction. Featuring a front-facing lift handle, along with an integrated trunk handle, it provides easy lifting to your mode of transport. It is fitted with 14-way dividers that include two larger wells to accommodate oversize putter grips, something many of the best golf cart bags offer.

Ping Pioneer Monsoon Trolley Bag
The Ping Pioneer Monsoon Cart Bag offers superb protection from the elements, with a water-repellent construction, eight seam sealed pockets and a pair of ventilated mesh-slip pockets making it a great option for those who play in all weathers. Performanc- wise, it's that good that it is ranked as one of the best waterproof golf bags we have tested.
A key feature of a good cart bag is accessibility and, with the Pioneer Monsoon, it delivers on this front. A cart-strap channel makes fitting the bag to a cart extremely simple as well as allowing for access to all pockets at all times, with a 15-way top divider keeping clubs protected and easily accessible, as the large putter well allows for oversized grips. The bag comes in four striking colors, which will help you stand out on the course, and its sturdy and practical construction provides sufficient waterproof storage for golfers wishing to take a selection of equipment options out to the first tee.
Ping Moonlite Carry Bag
The lightest of the Ping golf bags and one of the best golf pencil bags out there, the Moonlite is ideal if you’re zipping out for a quick nine holes or even an evening round.
One key factor is that it offers sufficient functionality to be a little more than just a secondary pencil bag. There are six pockets for example, which include a water bottle pocket and the 4-way rigid top provides easily enough room for all 14 clubs.
We were big fans of the standing strap, as it sits in a rigid position ready to go. This means that you don’t have to bend right down to pick the bag up and the dual straps can be easily converted into a single strap making it a pretty versatile carry bag. You can go minimally with a half set for reduced weight, or pack up and prepare for a longer day on the links.
Ping Rolling Travel Cover
This rugged, abrasion-resistant travel bag will keep your clubs safe no matter what size your golf bag. It features an outside pocket and six handles to ensure that it's easy to carry when getting in and out of vehicles. It has a strong polypropylene base with wheels for easy mobility and it is fitted with interlocking skid rails to help it roll smoothly over curbs. You also get a bag to store it and it folds down very small. If you want a matching Ping golf bag inside, check out the best Ping golf bags on the market right now.
How we test golf bags
Our testing process for all golf gear, let alone golf bags, is rigorous and comprehensive. As far as our methodology goes, if we say we have reviewed a product, that means we have used it out on the golf course and put it through its paces in different conditions. We also endeavour to use all the features on the golf bag, for example, if the valuables pocket claims to be waterproof, we pour water on it to find out.
We should also say that manufacturers cannot pay for a good review because we tell things how we see it. As far as the testing team goes, the Golf Monthly team is a mixture of ages and handicaps, and most are members at golf clubs so regularly put golf gear to the test in fun rounds as well as competitions.
How to choose a golf bag
There are several key factors to consider when thinking about buying a golf bag and we have gone into those below.
1. Bag Type
What kind of bag do you want? Stand bag ? Cart model ? Pencil bag ? All of these types of bag have their positives and negatives and you should think about what you think is important to your golf.
Stand bags are built for those who want to carry their clubs around the golf course which means factors like comfort and weight are very important. The two negatives most associated with stand bags are they require more effort to use, and they usually don't offer as much storage as cart bags. However, that being said there are several stand bags above that can also be used on golf carts as well so maybe that is a way of killing two birds with one stone.
Cart bags are for those who want to use golf carts on the golf course. One big advantage we have found is that cart bags also tend to offer ample storage for accessories, apparel, valuables and all the other golf paraphernalia you might need during the round. The main negative is they are just bulkier and have to be taken off the cart before and after the round, whereas stand bags offer a bit more freedom.
Pencil bags are obviously very light and perfect for quick rounds but are obviously limited in terms of storage and how many clubs they can store too without things getting a bit too over crowded.
2. Storage
Speaking of storage, it is important because a good golf bag has to offer pockets for lots of different things as we mentioned above. Cart bags tend to have larger pockets because they are just that, larger. They also require less effort to use too which means players are able to carry more stuff with them if needed.
Stand bags on the other hand usually have enough to house the essentials. However there are also golf bags out there that keep the game simple with only a few pockets so have a think about how much gear you want to take onto the golf course, and pick a bag accordingly.
3. Waterproofing
If you live or golf somewhere that gets a lot of rain then this is a no-brainer really, get a bag that offers protection from the rain. Whereas if you don't, then this factor won't be as important. We should acknowledge that some models above are better than others in this regard because they have been designed as such.
Across all types of bag, weight is important. Stand bags obviously have to be lightweight because players will be carrying them on their backs and shoulders all day, whilst cart bags should also have a degree of lightness too so they are easy to manoeuvre on the golf course, and from the car to the cart itself. Thankfully most brands these days make lightweight models because not many players want to use a heavy bag.
5. Looks
How do you want your golf bag to look? Whether it be a stand or cart model, brands try their best to create design aesthetics that stand out, or blend in on the golf course. Therefore have a think about which models you like the look of, or if some bags have different color schemes.
6. Budget
Our final factor to consider is of course price. There are golf bags at every single price point so if you want to go for a premium cart model you can, or if you want a cheap stand bag you can also do that too.
While the above selection of bags presents a comprehensive and reliable group of options, you should also be sure to check out our guides to some of the best golf bags on the market, our best Callaway golf bags guide and our best TaylorMade golf bags guide.
How many slots should a golf bag have?
There is no correct answer to this question, with it being a personal preference as to how many slots you should have. Some bags will offer 14 slots, one for each club, whilst others will have four or five. A 14 slot bag helps to keep the clubs separated from one another, whereas a four or five way divider keeps them more compact.
Should I buy a golf cart bag?
That is down to your preferences as a golfer but cart bags can be useful if you're the type of player looking for a little more space in your bag. They're also handy if you regularly use a buggy or cart and want to store your clubs on that cart or trolley.
What golf bag is best for me?
Once again it is personal preference as there are a number of factors that need to be considered when purchasing a bag. Firstly, if you prefer to carry your clubs instead of putting them on a trolley, then a carry bag is the one for you. However, if you do use a trolley, whether it is an electric or push, then your options differ. It now comes down to how much storage space you require, with Tour bags providing the most, but taking up more space.

The stand bags with the best stand systems are the PING Hoofer family and the Sunday Golf Ranger. Both are supremely stable. Something curious we noticed was Callaway's new stand system. The shorter legs on the Fairway 14 and other models are used to accommodate their Lowrider 2.0 technology.

This is a long way of simply saying the best bag is still the best you can buy. That bag is the Ping Hoofer, which has set the standard for stand bags since the late 1980s.Thanks to its revolutionary angled bottom built upon Sun Mountain's revitalization of collapsible stand legs earlier in that decade, the Hoofer was stable when the legs were deployed and completely changed how golfers walk ...
Dividers: Stand bags traditionally have fewer than 14 dividers to help keep the total weight down. The PING Hoofer 14, PING DLX, Traverse and Pioneer are good choices if you want a golf bag that keeps your clubs separate and protected. Number of Pockets: In addition to the number of pockets, look at the pocket types.

The Hoofer has a wealth of great features, but two stand out as being particularly clever. First is the attached rain hood (seen above). The rain hood is smart on two counts. Having the hood attached means that you won't lose it. Also, PING has located it where most bags just place padding, so you don't lose any storage space.

The Ping Hoofer Lite golf bag weighs less than 5lb but is still packed with features and storage space. It feels durable, it's super-comfortable to carry, and there is ample room for all of your gear and gadgets. PROS. Really good strap. Built to last. Full Hoofer functionality. CONS.
Feedback. For those that care, here's my 4 month review of the 2023 hoofer 14 bag. Top layout & tangle: Been using a sun mountain hybrid bag for many years now and was worried about the club tangle everyone talks about with ping bags. The SM hybrid and hoofer have the same layout with driver and putter spots at the top (perfect layout in my mind).
Nice review and nice bag. If you want a 14 way stand bag your choices come down to the SM 4.5 and the Ping Hoofer 14. They're both constructed for durability and ease of access, storage, etc. However the Ping bag is unfortunately a smaller diameter top and the dividers do not extend fully to the bottom like the SM bag (at least the last ...

Ping Hoofer Stand Bag Verdict. The Ping Hoofer is a good all-round bag that looks great and is very practical, making it a good choice for most golfers. I have been quite critical in certain areas of my review but that is because the Hoofer name carries some gravitas and you expect it to be a market-leader in terms of performance, which is why ...
Speaking of space, the Hoofer Monsoon also comes with a 5-way top, giving easy access to your clubs. What's great about this bag compared to the best golf stand bags on the market is that its dividers aren't too large and doesn't allow your clubs to clunk around while you traverse the course. The Monsoon's 5-way top also stops club crowding at ...
